$50M bridge to offer Hwy. 7 relief BY AMANDA PERSICO

To relieve congestion along Hwy. 7, the region is building a bridge over Hwy. 404, linking business areas in Markham and Richmond Hill. Construction of the four-lane, $50 million bridge over Hwy. 404 north of Hwy. 7 started this spring and is expected to be complete

in 2018. Drivers can expect nighttime closures as work on bridge structure starts. Last week, construction crews started erecting support beams, closing the highway overnight. “With any major construction project, there will be some disruption,” the region’s manger of engineering Paul Acquaah said. But the end result will be to

alleviate congestion within one of the region’s more densely populated employment areas. “The new road will serve as a relief valve for congestion on Hwy. 7,” Acquaah said. “The 400-series highway is a barrier. There aren’t many options for drivers.” The overpass, Norman Bethune Avenue, will connect East Pearce Street in the East Beaver Creek business area in Richmond

When complete, Norman Bethune Avenue will feature an onroad bike lane, sidewalks and street lights. The region is also building a twoway, north-south connection from Hwy. 7 to Norman Bethune Avenue,

which will be named later this year. This gives northbound Hwy. 404 drivers the option to turn either east or west on to Hwy. 7 or to continue north and bypass Hwy. 7 altogether. The project also calls for a realignment of the existing northbound onramp from Hwy. 7 westbound. Markham, Richmond Hill and York Region will share the cost of the approximately $50 million project. The York Region District School Board is investigating allegations that an elementary school principal put anti-Muslim posts on her Facebook page. A spokesman for the board said it was aware of concerns raised by a community member about public postings on a Facebook page under the name Ghada Sadaka. Sadaka is identified as a principal in the York board on the page. “We take all matters of this nature seriously. After learning of the allegations, the board has begun an investigation,” said YRDSB spokesperson Licinio Miguelo. “This is a personnel matter, and as such details cannot be provided, however we will conduct a thorough investigation, follow all protocols and policies and take any necessary measures,” he said. Some of the Facebook posts the principal is alleged to have shared and commented on include: videos purportedly showing violent “Muslim takeovers” of Paris and London; articles expressing concerns around bringing refugees to Canada, given their “terrorist sympathies”; and another headlined: “Must see: Dutch mayor tells fellow Muslims they can f------ if they don’t like freedom.” Sadaka, the new principal at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School in Markham, referred all questions to the board’s head office when contacted by the Star Friday. “I appreciate your questions, but for any further information you will have to go through the board office,” she said. The community member, who asked not to be

identified for fear of repercussions, said she felt the Facebook posts were “blatantly spreading hate.” The posts, some dating back to early 2015, were removed last week after the Star contacted the school board. A screenshot of a post shared by York Regional District School Board principal Ghada Sadaka on Facebook. “As I was on Facebook I stumbled upon a principal’s page who had some Islamophobic posts,” said the woman in an email sent to the YRDSB director and obtained by the Star. She claimed that “it is obvious” the person putting up the posts “has a dislike towards Muslims. GHADA SADAKA “From my understanding, YRDSB upholds the values of having its students feel respected and safe,” she said. “It is unacceptable to be seeing this behaviour.” In a response to the woman’s email, local superintendent Peter Tse said, “We will definitely take your concerns and follow up into the matter.” According to her LinkedIn profile, Sadaka has been a vice-principal in the board since 2011 and became a principal in 2013. She had previously worked as a principal at E.T. Crowle Public School, which is also in multicultural Markham. — Noor Javed, Torstar

Danny Laszlo was non-verbal until he was seven years old. Today, he is 30 and speaks multiple languages. He also has a photographic memory that allows him to actually type out full texts after reading them. He has autism and physical disabilities. In honour of his birthday on Aug. 31, Laszlo

and his mother, Kathy, decided to have a large reunion with Zareinu, the school that admitted him as a student despite his challenges and the fact that there were financial issues after Kathy fled Hungary with nothing. Many of the original teachers attended to celebrate not just the fact that Danny was turning 30, but the fact that he is raising money to donate to Zareinu to help others who need an education and financial support, as he did. He inspired his mother, along with Susie

Sokol, to create the organization DANI in 2006, when it was discovered there was a void in the programs available to him after high school. Kathy founded the organization to help meet the needs of adults with disabilities in the Jewish community who have completed high school. It started as a parent-to-parent advocacy group and became an incorporated charity. Go to dani-toronto.com for more information on Dani.

It is not remarkable that on a hot Wednesday, Aug. 31, a small group of girls in Thornhill sold popsicles. What is remarkable is their reason for selling these frozen treats. The group of 5-7 year olds were raising money for a little girl in the neighborhood of Thornhill Woods (between Hwy. 7 and Major Mackenzie, and Bathurst and Dufferin streets). The girl is four years old and has Cerebral Palsy, a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. She uses a walker and will need surgeries and therapies in the near future. The group of girls are from a local neighborhood Kindness Club that Sheri Helman started this summer in her backyard. Helman wanted to be proactive and work on improving her daughter’s social skills and build her confidence through the summer so she’d be ready to tackle Grade 1. So, Helman started the club, which covered different topics every week, from the power of words, to being kind to the environment (the group cleaned up a park one week), to helping others who may have difficulties or disabilities (the girls explored different activities they had to do with physical limitations), to being a good friend. Other topics included empowering yourself and feeling good about yourself (they did a fitness session, Dreams and Goals workshop with a local store and a yoga session led by a mom who is a yoga teacher), to mindfulness/meditation, involving brainstorming what makes a good friend and a good person. The Kindness Club’s motto is It’s Cool to be Kind. For the group’s final activity of the summer, members worked on helping others in need. At the North Thornhill Community Centre, the girls sold freezies and all proceeds went to the girl’s family, who wishes to remain private.

replace the executor that is no longer alive. Without an executor named in your will, there will be nobody to act for your estate immediately upon your death. If you have separated since the date of your last will, it is important to consider revising your will. If your will leaves everything to your “spouse” and you are separated, you should be aware that your separated spouse is still your spouse and could inherit under your existing will, if he or she is named. Your separation does not revoke your will. On the other hand, if you have married since the date of your last will, your will is revoked by Ontario Law. In other words, if your will is dated January 15, 2010, and you got married in 2016, you no longer have a valid will. I reviewed wills for a husband and wife who had forgotten to update them after their third child was born. Their wills left everything to each other and then to two of their three children. They had inadvertently cut out their third child. They made a new will that included all of their children as beneficiaries. So many wills I review refer to assets that no longer exist. If you left your 14k gold ring to your daughter Mary and you no longer own it, it is important to revise your will so that you do not create false expectations. As well, if you left Mary your house on John Street but you no longer own that house, she will not get your house on Main Street. If you want her to get your house on Main Street, you should revise your will to say this. I reviewed a woman’s will which appeared to be fine until she told me that her daughter, who was getting half of her estate outright, is on Ontario Disability Support Benefits. When I told her that this will would

I explained that in order to protect her daughter’s government benefits, she could not leave an outright gift of such a large amount of money but should consider setting up what is known as a Henson Trust. A man brought in a homemade will for me to review. When I asked him what he did for a living, he told me that he owned a manufacturing company. When I asked the value of the company, he told me it was worth about 5 million dollars. I told him that the probate tax would be approximately $75,000.00 dollars. He was not aware that he could make a second will for his company shares which would mean that probate tax on those shares would be zero. I have seen doctors and dentists who own medical and dental professional corporations who now realize that they can make a second will for their corporation which will result in zero probate tax for such corporate assets. In Ontario, you are allowed to make two wills, one for your corporation and one for your other assets. You can save a lot of probate tax by doing this. Your will should be a living, breathing document, and it should reflect your current life situation. Unfortunately, many wills are locked in safety deposit boxes and haven’t been looked at in years. Meanwhile, since the will was made, there may have been marriages, divorces, remarriages, more children, more grandchildren etc., and assets that have changed. Your will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign. You made a will to protect your loved ones. How can it protect your loved ones, if it is out of date? I have seen so many wills that were prepared in the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. These wills do not have a special clause to protect a child’s inheritance in case that child gets separated or divorced. It is not good enough just to say “I leave my estate to my son Bill.” Without a family law clause in your will, any money your child makes on the inheritance through investments is not protected in case he or she gets separated or divorced. I also find this important clause missing from so many of the will kits and homemade wills that I review. Even if your will was done in the 90’s or after 2000, I would be pleased to review it to make sure it has the family law clause in it. One of the most important parts of your will is the appointment of your executor. I find so many wills have executors named that are no longer alive. Many of these wills also have no back up executor to

Calling it a career

Gold stars for return of pocketbook

es, you read the headline correctly. I’m taking early retirement this fall and ending a 35-year career in community journalism. It’s time — and it’s all about time. It’s the 50+ hours a week and six days a week. (If I ever answered your email in the evening or on the weekend, you’ll know I don’t keep traditional office hours.) With the modern, insatiable news cycle demanding information 24/7, and laptops, cellphones and social media accounts that keep you connected even on weekends and vacations, it’s really hard to disconnect and take time to relax, time for family, time for culture and recreation. It’s that time I want to spend — as the saying goes, “smelling the roses”. My local theatre, three blocks from my home, presents free weekly jazz concerts every summer. I only managed to attend part of one concert this season. I add up all the family meals I missed over more than three decades on newspaper deadline days and those hours can never be recouped. I clearly recall one of those watershed, out-of-the-mouthsof-babes statements of truth when both children were in high school and I was a typical working mom, strategizing for a busy week ahead. I outlined who would drive which kid to band practice or dentist, which nights I’d be out attending community events, and reminded them I wouldn’t be home for dinner on the Wednesday night. “Mom, ever since we were born you haven’t been home for dinner on Wednesday nights,” observed my daughter dryly, but quite accurately. But lest you think I’m complaining about my career in community journalism, banish that thought. It has been an incredible, interesting, rewarding and educational career — and one with a company pension, which neither of my adult children is likely to

Marney Beck enjoy in their lifetimes. Those not in journalism may wonder at my description of my work being “educational,” but through my long career, I’ve been lucky to have learned so much about so many things. As a rookie reporter, I distinctly recall covering a council meeting for a rural municipality and trying to make sense of the Tile Drainage Act and what’s this thing called a “levy” that the councillors kept talking about? I learned so much about politics, religion, medicine, the law, the environment and human nature (good and bad). I learned how to cope with irate people on the phone, speak gently and with empathy to family members grieving the loss of a loved one, and try to make sense of 30-page council documents and distil it down to a few paragraphs of non-jargon words so readers would understand how a decision impacted them. I wasn’t always successful and I don’t have any pithy, lofty words of advice for the next generation of reporters and editors, other than to say: enjoy the rocket ride where it takes you — and get off when it’s going too fast. That’s what I’ve elected to do. But ending my traditional journalism career it doesn’t mean I’ll suddenly stop writing or never use my editing skills again. I hope to use my skills and experience through freelance or contract work in the town I’ve called home since 1984, and the Region of York where I’ve worked as a journalist for decades. So in a few weeks you won’t see my name listed as editor on any newspaper masthead; I’ll be out smelling the roses!

On Monday, Aug. 22 there was one of those incidents which demonstrate the best of human behaviour and our society. A friend left his pocketbook on the northbound VIVA Blue bus when he disembarked at Wellington Street, Aurora in the late afternoon. At any time, for anyone, such an experience is stressful. In this case it was traumatic, due to critical medications and various personal identification papers in the pocketbook. Someone found it and handed it in to the driver. The driver, in turn, deposited it to lost and found. Within 13 hours of the loss, VIVA telephoned to say that it had been found and that the contents appeared intact! (And indeed, everything was there.) A huge thank you to whomever found it; and gold stars to VIVA for its lost and found procedures.

We can do better on waste Re: Does charging people to recycle get desired results? column by Bernie O’Neill, Sept. 1. I’d like to comment on the letters and Bernie O’Neill’s column on illegal dumping and waste management in York. The reasoning to charge a fee for certain waste is to act as a deterrent to ensure that the proper recyclables are diverted from landfill. The Community Environmental Centre (CRC) doesn’t charge for metal, styrofoam, electronics, etc. Increasing Double-Up Days (in Vaughan) works against this; we want to create less landfill waste, not more. What is needed is more effort by everyone to ensure

that our waste is properly separated to its respective stream. I’m surprised at how little is left out in green bin/blue boxes, and so much in regular garbage. In our household, we can put out regular garbage only once a month, because I can divert most of my waste through green bin/blue box/ backyard composting. I do agree the Region York could make it a little easier, such as “one-stop” dumping, instead of having to go to separate facilities for recyclables, electronics, hazardous household waste, etc.

Give Stouffville Road green name The world is trying to go green and York Region is trying to be green — although regional traffic engineers have as their main job facilitating vehicle movements. But when it comes to the Stouffville Road renovations, there are some serious ecological and environmental hazards — the endangered Jefferson Salamander for one, redbacked salamanders, leopard and green frogs

and North American toads which have the misfortune to migrate across this road each spring. There have been efforts to prevent the sad carnage of late winter, early spring and it is hoped that during the current reconstruction of Stouffville Road, these concerns have been taken into account and worked on — even solved — as well as they can be on a relatively high-speed traffic link. Good on them and on York Region. One thing that might help, now and in the future, is to remind York Region residents of where they are when they use this road. I would ask York Region council members to rename the stretch of Stouffville Road between Leslie Street and perhaps Yonge Street to the west — running along beside the Jefferson Forest and the Oak Ridges Moraine Corridor Park on its north side — the Jefferson Forest Greenway.

Have you ever been left wondering if the fundraising efforts you experienced on your front doorstep or over the phone were real or fraudulent? Well, you’re not alone. Two York Region women were left asking similar questions during two recent interactions. Rossana Dicenso from Richmond Hill and Mekmang Bravo from Newmarket discovered how varied the responses to that question can become. Dicenso was walking her dog near her home at Bayview and 16th Avenues at around noon last Thursday when three boys approached her waving a Mackenzie Health flyer and carrying a plastic container half filled with coins. One of them spoke up, explaining the boys, aged about 10, were raising money for the hospital’s heart and lung unit. Dicenso, a monthly donor to the hospital and well-versed in how corporate charities raise money, was suspicious. “I said, ‘I don’t have any money,’ with that it occurred to me, ‘No, this is not right’,” she said, explaining she had received the same flyer only days before. “They were going from house to house, they were on a mission and put thought into it.” She said from her experience, corporate fundraising operations are more professional.

So, she took action. “I just wanted to let everyone know, because it seemed they’d scammed more than a few people,” she added. When reached, Debora Kelly, director of communications at Mackenzie Health Foundation, said the canvassers were not authorized representatives. “The foundation does not use children to canvass door-to-door and cash is not accepted,” she said, noting the hospital’s fundraisers wear branded attire and carry appropriate identification. She noted the foundation is raising $250 million for the new Vaughan hospital. Bravo’s story ended quite differently, after she discovered her healthy sense of skepticism was unfounded. She asked yorkregion.com to check on the legitimacy of an Ontario Police Association campaign to raise money for an event involving police officers fishing with children. “I got a call two days in a row from this guy asking for donations,” she wrote via Facebook. “He said $25 would change the lives of children.” However, despite her suspicion about the telephone call, the charity is legitimate. The police association, an umbrella group for police unions across Ontario, runs a campaign called the Bob Izumi’s Kids and Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days. Stephen Reid, the executive director of the association, said the charity raises about $100,000 a year.

Stories of frauds don’t get much more fantastical than this one. York police investigators uncovered an alleged scam in April 2016 after a Vaughan woman came forward with reports she’d been defrauded. But when police looked into the alleged crime, its scale went far beyond what one might expect. The story begins after the 51-year-old woman met someone online, falling for a man who didn’t really exist. Over the next few months, he “borrowed” thousands of dollars from her. However, after the money had been paid out, the alleged perpetrator offered the woman a chance to get some back. Once she accepted, arrangements were made to meet an associate of the online friend, who claimed to be a diplomat from the United Kingdom by the name of Adam David, who would return the funds. However, once she met the man, she dealt with further demands, first being told the men needed more money to free the cash from customs, York police said. The woman was then told to meet the men at a nearby hotel, but when she showed up, a suitcase full of money, which was paint-

ed black, was produced, under the excuse it was coloured in order to sneak it through customs. More money was then demanded for the money to be “cleaned” with some form of solution. After the last batch of money was handed over, the man disappeared, never to be seen again. “There are many types of scams with a variety of tricks and tactics used by the suspects, but the goal is the same, suspects are looking to take as much money as they can from their victims,” said Const. Andy Pattenden. “We urge our citizens to always consult with a trusted friend or family member or call the police before sending any money to strangers.” Police arrested Taiwo Gbolade of Brampton on Aug. 31. He is scheduled to appear at Newmarket court on Sept. 29, charged with fraud over $5,000. Police believe there are other victims and are asking people to come forward and call 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6612.

At its Sept. 24 concert, York Region Chamber Music will transport its audience back in time to 1790. The upcoming concert, The Past: Imagining Mozart’s Piano, will feature Thornhill pianist Andrea Botticelli performing on a replica of a 1790 fortepiano. The concert is at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts at 6:15 p.m. The instrument of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, the fortepiano is an early version of the modern day piano. It was one of the first keyboard instruments capable of playing at different volumes and forever changed the way composers wrote music. Due to advancements in technology and research, it has recently become possible to recreate a functioning fortepiano. Botticelli’s playing has been praised as “brilliant and dynamic”, with “poetic nuances and virtuosity”. She grew up in Thornhill and is a graduate of Unionville High School’s Arts York program, the University of Toronto, and the Glenn Gould School. She has since performed across Canada and abroad in England, France, Italy, Spain and the United States in prestigious venues such as the George Weston Recital Hall, Massey Hall, Rolston Recital Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. While she may not have played her best golf, Thornhill’s Selena Costabile was pleased with the overall experience of competing in her first LPGA event last weekend in Cambridge. “It was definitely a struggle playing wise, but the overall experience was amazing,” said the 18-year-old Bill Crothers grad, who shot a combined 15 over par and missed the cut at the Manulife LPGA Classic. With the tournament held at the Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, she was grateful

When Dawn Belmonte’s father was in his final years, suffering from leukemia and being treated with chemotherapy, he was fleeced by Internet scammers for $15,000. So when Belmonte began answering calls from bogus Canada Revenue operators on top of the hundreds of phony air duct cleaning companies and computer virus scammers, Belmonte finally grew fed up. “It’s almost like I was taken over,” the mother of three boys from Woodbridge said last week. “I became so into it I kept embellishing my lies more and more. I don’t know how I came up with it, it just flowed from my mouth.” What she is referring to is the recording she took of her conversation with a man that is setting the Internet on fire. The YouTube video shows a glimpse into the kind of calls thousands of Canadians receive each year, and an imaginative way to deal with the calls, as Belmonte manages to scam the scammers. The swindle works like this. People in Canada are called and threatened with arrest or even deportation if they don’t pay some sort of fee. But instead of falling for the intricate fraud, Belmonte begins by giving the operator a phony name, before swiftly weaving a fantastical story about how her husband was arrested for tax-fraud leaving her and her six children, penniless. Her bogus story grows even more

The scam involves him threatening her with arrest if she fails to pay $2,500 for what he claims was some sort of illegal activity on her part. The caller tells her if she wires him the money he will call off the arrest warrant and put to rest her $25,000 bill. In a whiny, helpless, sobbing voice Belmonte suggests she is going to be deported back to the United States and even had to borrow $5 from a neighbour just to buy milk for her children. “I thought they would catch on and hang up, but they kept eating it up,” she said. After more than three minutes on the phone, the caller breaks down asking Belmonte not to be so emotional, adding that everything he told her was one big “scam”. “Let me tell you one thing, no need to cry,” he says. “Everything we told you is totally wrong. If you get a call from anybody asking for money don’t pay anything to them.” Belmonte said although she imagined her phone recording would bring down the whole international organization of CRA fraudsters, she quickly found out that was a fantasy. “I thought I was going to be a local hero, getting one of these guys to confess on video,” she said. “But ... police said it’s almost impossible to actually catch people for these crimes.”
