A simple survey showing that more than half of Vaughan residents polled would be in favour of building a casino at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre was enough to set the crowd off at a recent information session. Before that point, participants from the community had been orderly and calm. But when the floodgates opened, there was no holding back the crowd, many of whom saw the presentation as a marketing tool designed to persuade them on the merits of locating a casino in Vaughan.
500 polled online The Pollara poll, which came at the end of an hour-plus speech by Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. executives, showed that 55 per cent of the 500 polled online in August were in favour of a casino in Vaughan. The poll also showed 18 per cent strongly supported a casino, 37 per cent somewhat supported it, while 34 per cent were opposed, 15 per cent somewhat opposed and 19 per cent strongly opposed. Other numbers showed that overall, 75 per cent of respondents held a positive view of casinos and 20 per cent held a negative one. York Region faces a serious affordable housing crunch so the opening of 30 new units in Vaughan to serve lowincome families was met with much fanfare. More than 150 people, including many politicians from all levels of government, showed up last Friday to celebrate the opening of the Reena Community Residence at the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus, near Bathurst Street and Major Mackenzie Drive.
Waiting list “As good as we’ve been in so many different areas, this is one area, social housing, that we struggle with and we have a large waiting list of all sorts of folks who require assistance,” York Region chairperson Bill Fisch said. “We do all that we can to ensure we cover that list as much as possible, but it’s the groups that get together, like Reena and others, who come to realize that they to have to assist in this issue that we have. They’re the ones that have been most successful at helping us do what we have
to do.” Reena’s new residence features housing for up to 84 people in 60 self-contained apartments, half of which are available to low-income tenants. “I’m in awe of the work that you did and the passion that you put into making this building a reality,” Joan Glick Gold, chair of Reena’s board of directors.
Housing facilities Reena, established in 1973, is a non-profit social service agency that helps people with developmental disabilities integrate into mainstream society. As a Jewish organization, people enrolled in Reena’s programs and living in its residences observe Jewish culture, values and traditions. But its programs and housing facilities are open to people of any faith. The new residence received $4.2 million from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. It also got a boost of $1.1 million in “municipal financial incentives” and $2.6 million from the Ministry of Community and Social Services toward
operating costs. “… It’s going to be a new place for seniors, for people with special needs and for low-income households. Really, that’s great news for people that need a hand up and, as well, it’s more rental options for local residents,” said Labour Minister Lisa Raitt speaking on behalf of Human Resources Minister Diane Finley, who is also responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. “When we provide these new housing units it will contribute to the economic (and) social well-being of the entire community.” Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi said the project is just one example of the provincial government’s commitment to providing affordable housing in communities across Ontario. “These 60 new units will provide a safe and stable home that will improve the lives and well-being for many people in this community,” he said. “In fact, the entire community can benefit from the recreation and educational programs that this new building is going to offer.”

NOTICE OF STUDY The City of Markham has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to identify and prioritize opportunities to improve the management of stormwater within the City. Improvements may be achieved through the retrofit of existing stormwater management (SWM) facilities and/or through the construction of new SWM facilities in areas that are currently lacking appropriate controls. Once the problem is fully documented, a set of alternative solutions will be evaluated and presented to the public and agencies for comment at various points throughout the study. A prioritized list of SWM facilities retrofit and new construction opportunities will be developed. The study will also identify mitigative measures to reduce impacts of the resulting proposed work. A key component of the study will be consultation with interested stakeholders (public, landowners and regulatory agencies). Two Public Information Centres (PIC’s) will be held to provide interested parties with an opportunity to review and discuss issues related to the study. The first PIC is scheduled for the winter of 2012. Details regarding the forthcoming PIC will be advertised in local newspapers and on the City’s website as the study progresses. The study will be conducted as a ‘Schedule B’ project in compliance with the Municipal Engineers Association document “Municipal Class Environmental Assessment,� (October 2000, amended in 2007 & 2011) that will address Phases 1 and 2 of the Class EA Process. We are interested in hearing any comments or input that you may have about this study. Comments and information regarding the study are being collected to assist the City of Markham in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. Thornhill’s Keith Bolender, a respected university lecturer on Cuban political affairs, has written a second book on the decades-long cold war between the small country and the United States. His first book was Voices from the Other Side: An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba. The book received critical acclaim in England, North America and Cuba and Mr. Bolender was even allowed to present a copy personally to Fidel Castro. His latest book is Cuba Under Siege; American Policy, The Revolution and Its People tracing how American policy against Cuba has created a siege mentality and the negative affect it has had on Cuban society. It will be published later this year by Palgrave in New York. This weekend the longtime dispute in philosophy between the two countries is the focus of a Toronto conference on the plight of the Cuban Five, agents sent to Florida to stop terrorist acts, who ended up being imprisoned themselves. The Peoples’ Tribunal and Assembly for Justice for the
KEITH BOLENDER: Thornhill author and expert on Cuba will be part of this weekend’s tribunal in Toronto. Cuban Five will be held at Toronto City Hall, council chambers, starting this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 9 a.m. and continuing through Sunday. The tribunal will hear witnesses, including wives of the prisoners, who will testify regarding the historical and political context of this case, its legal process and developments since the trial. Among the jurors will be Mr. Bolender, age 56, joining others such as Danny Glover, internationally acclaimed
actor; Cindy Sheehan, radio host and peace advocate; Canadian MP Libby Davies; and a United Church minister. At the end of the conference a legal decision will be rendered. “Unfortunately, the case is almost completely unknown in Canada and this event is an effort to show that these Cuban agents were simply sent to Florida to try and prevent further acts of terrorism — and ended up being jailed for that,” explained Mr. Bolender. Among the presenting sponsors are the Canadian Network on Cuba, the Canadian Cuban Friendship Association and numerous Canadian union organizations. “I think the tribunal is important and I hope as many people as possible are able to come out. Counting crossing guards
Is it right for the City of Markham to examine whether or not crossing guards are needed during the lunch hour at 37 schools? Yes it is, as long as the review is done with care and with the students’ safety and parents’ wishes in mind. There really should be no sacred cows when it comes to the spending of taxpayers’ money. Money and people can be reallocated elsewhere to make the best use of what we have, rather than having crossing guards where there are no children to guard. Some might argue that if even one child is coming home for lunch and crossing at an intersection near the school, a crossing guard should be there to help them. But is this reasonable? Is it fair for parents and students and some 45 other schools in Markham where crossing guards are only on duty in the morning before school and the afternoon when school lets out? These schools seem to be managing. According to a report presented to city councillors last week, there is a set of criteria that spells out how many children would need to cross
at a given intersection to warrant having a crossing guard. In some of the older areas of town, a different criteria was used. The result is there are some locations where, with a change in demographics as well as fewer students in the younger grades, guards are guarding very few, or in some instances, no children at lunch. This seems to be the norm in many parts of Markham as it is, with both parents working and the days of a stay-at-home parent serving up a hot lunch long gone. If a school is down to just one or two kids heading home for lunch and a TV or video game session, it would make sense to inform all families that there will no longer be a lunch-hour crossing guard with children expected to remain at school for a supervised lunch. Of course, if there are more children crossing at lunch hour, guards are still needed. Let’s let the study be done, consult parents and then try to abide by the findings. Our kids are seeing enough upheaval in their school lives when it comes to their education. Let’s hope we can get it right when it comes to crossing guards.
MADD York Region needs a little volunteer help
A
t the beginning of this year, I wrote a column stating the MADD York Region chapter was fighting for its existence and needed new volunteers to stay active. At that time, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter had only two positions filled on its executive and was on “life support”. I asked readers “is MADD relevant in our community?” and you responded very positively. The meeting room at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill was filled to capacity at the next meeting, with people eager to sign on to participate and ensure the anti-drinking and driving message was heard, loud and clear, across York Region communities. I felt a personal need to help support this group and have been attending monthly meetings to publicize their community events and activities. MADD York Region needs our help again. As chance would have it, the woman who agreed to lead the group
Marney Beck and assume the president role, Dayna Switzer of Richmond Hill, went back to school this fall and can not continue her volunteer duties. Another member of the executive, Paolo Pecchia of Maple, has stepped up to the plate and agreed to take on the president’s job. Other members of the executive are grateful he has agreed to fill this key role. They include Jessica Seymour, a passionate young woman who handles public speaking engagements
with schools and other organizations; Micheline Cassidy, the treasurer; and Margaret Williams, who handles public education and victim support and sits on the national board. Each of these women has had her own tragic interaction with a drunk driver. Jessica lost her leg; Micheline her daughter and Margaret her younger sister. For these women and all other members of the MADD chapter, working to fight drinking driving in the community is more than a cause, it’s a personal fight; a painful passion. And don’t think because of the name Mothers Against Drunk Driving that there are no men backing this group. Navid Afsharian is vice president, Nathan McMillan provides computer and web support and Doug Strong has agreed to assume the court watchdog role, keeping the chapter and national body updated on court proceedings as charged drivers face justice for the mayhem they commit on our roads.

If you can help with office support duties, can volunteer a few hours at public events, would like to participate in a holiday safe ride home project in December or would like to come to a meeting and find out what MADD York Region is all about, consider this your invitation. The next meeting is Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill (on Major Mackenzie, just west of Yonge Street).

The United Way of York Region announced its largest gift on record — $100,000 — from the estate of Robert Kidd during Nightingale’s employee fundraising campaign kickoff Monday. On a day of firsts, the health care IT and software company launched its inaugural staff campaign to support the United Way’s ambitious $8.26-million record goal for 2012. The gift, as outlined in the The Robert Kidd Community Leadership Challenge, will match first-time donations of $1,000 or more. 2 assaulted in Markham home invasion York Regional Police are investigating a home invasion that occurred in Markham Monday afternoon on Clarke Avenue, just east of Yonge Street. At about 3 p.m., a woman knocked
on an apartment door and waved a piece of paper, which was seen through the peephole by one of the victims, police said. When the door was open, five men forced their way into the apartment and assaulted two men. Police are looking for a black man and a Persian man at this time.

Concord lottery players cash in The community of Concord has been twice lucky this summer. And twice, a Valentino has been lucky, too. Linda Yearwood and Aldo Valentino, residents of Concord since 1984, are celebrating their million-dollar win after learning a Lotto Max ticket they purchased earlier this summer was a winner. Just two months before the couple bought the winner at Glen Shields Pharmacy in Concord, Valentino Hyden learned the ticket he purchased at Vaughan Convenience in Concord was also worth $1 million. Aldo Valentino, who found out about his win two weeks ago, is still stunned by the good news. The lab technician, and his wife, a secretary, bought the ticket at the start of the summer and then forgot about it. For about two months the ticket was cast aside, left in the letter box, then stuck under a magnet on the kitchen fridge. It was Aug. 30, on a casual run into the store to check their numbers, when they heard the good news. “I just remember tears flowing down my face when I found out,” Ms Yearwood recalled. They kept it a secret, at first, because the next day they were attending a wedding and didn’t want to steal the spotlight, said Mr. Valentino. The couple, who have been playing the lottery for years, plan on using their windfall toward paying off debts, investing the rest for their retirement and taking care of their children aged 22 and 26. The ticket was for the July 6 Lotto Max draw. The lottery pool, worth $100 Million in prizes, was the largest lottery in Canadian lottery history. — Kim Zarzour

York Region is partnering with the country’s largest food retailer in an attempt to eliminate traditional plastic grocery bags for good. Five Loblaws stores in the region have been chosen as test locations to roll out a compostable bag pilot starting Monday. They are the Fortinos on Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan, the Loblaws on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, the Superstore on Bayview Avenue in Aurora, the Superstore on Yonge Street in East Gwillimbury and the Zehrs on Woodbine Avenue in Keswick.
‘They are getting a pretty robust, sturdy bag for 15 cents’ The two-month pilot will test the compostable shopping bags, which will be offered for 15 cents at checkouts. The bags comprise 40 per cent renewable plant-based materials and match the durability, size and reusability of plastic bags that sell for five cents at stores. “I think people will figure out the math pretty quickly,” Claudio Gemmiti of Loblaw
Companies Ltd. told the region’s environmental services committee. The cheapest compostable bag on the market now is 10 cents, he said. “They are getting a pretty robust, sturdy bag for 15 cents,” Mr. Gemmiti said, adding the company is relying on people to realize they are getting a good value. By charging five cents for plastic shopping bags, Loblaws has reduced the number of bags from its stores by 71 per cent across the country. York council implemented mandatory use of certified compostable bags in its green bin program last year. It will be a hard decision for many people at the counter between buying a five-cent plastic bag and a 15-cent compostable bag, regional chairperson Bill Fisch said. Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath agreed, adding there may be even be some resistance to the charge. But Richmond Hill Deputy Mayor Vito Spatafora, who is chairperson of the region’s environmental services committee, maintained it’s important the pilot gets a good run in any case. “We are trying to get rid of film plastic,” he said. “It doesn’t deteriorate... It has impact on our wildlife.”

social impacts, a waste of money and crime concerns. The benefits, meanwhile, would include revenue for the city, jobs, improved entertainment options and tourism and hospitality. However, despite these findings, many questioned whether the revenue the city would receive would be worth the risk. In all, the OLG projected the city’s earnings would be largely comparable to the slots at Woodbine in Toronto, which rakes in about $14.8 million a year or 5 per cent of the
city’s entire budget. To that, many called out, “is that all”? One woman stood up, rejecting the meeting format, in which people were asked to write their questions down on a piece of paper. The participant said the damage done to the community surrounding the OLG Slots at Woodbine Racetrack would also happen in Vaughan. “Woodbine Mall is struggling and shops are vacant,” said Mariani Santina. “This (a casino) wouldn’t help small businesses in the community. You (OLG) are trying to put people in your hotels and your restaurants, nowhere else. This (the poll) has
been premature. How can we make a decision (referring to the residents questioned in the poll) without the facts?” Her comments were echoed by Concord and Thornhill North Councillor Sandra Racco in an e-mail to The Liberal. “The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation will, of course, provide you with all the statistics and surveys that will paint a pretty picture of lights and glitter in the immediate area,” she said. “Quite often, local businesses do not gain, but rather, suffer greatly from the loss of revenue because the concentration of business will remain within the main strip of where the casino is built. I truly hope our residents, our businesses, and my colleagues will give serious consideration in not supporting this proposal.” It was Ms Yeung Racco’s husband, former Thornhill MPP Mario Racco, who stood up at the meeting to ask OLG executives what kind of families will want to live in the new condominiums planned for the VMC if there is a huge casino next door? Others complained about the social costs, including one woman who stood up at the meeting to talk about the damage gambling has caused done to her family. She added some of her neighbours have witnessed children stealing from their own parents to raise gambling funds. The OLG, meanwhile, remained constant in their message, saying that an “integrated, resort-style facility” could add up to 5,000 slot machines, not to mention “potentially thousands of direct permanent jobs and thousands more from construction, increased local tourism and planning”. When asked what percentage of the profits Vaughan would receive, the OLG could not say, adding that no number could be devised because the facility doesn’t yet exist. They did, however, include a number of other statistics including wages to employees at Woodbine since 2000, which total $371.1 million, purchases from local and regional vendors totaling $174.1 million and OLG corporate sponsorships of local events totaling $3.7 million. “As we explained in the presentation, we see plenty of benefits for any host community,” OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti said. “From jobs to increased tax base, to tourism. The benefits are clear. We also understand that people have concerns about the social impacts of having a casino in their community and we don’t deny that a small percentage of the population has an issue with gambling. We deal with these issues head-on with our extensive responsible gambling program and the $40 million that goes to the province for free addiction programs for those ask for it.” Before a casino is built, the OLG would have to receive approval from council, receive zoning approval and enter into a host municipal funding agreement with the city.

Mark Wafer is deaf, but that isn’t why he thinks it’s good to hire the disabled. The Tim Horton’s franchise owner has employed 82 people with disabilities, including 33 currently in his workforce of 210, spread over six locations. He knows what he’s talking about when he says there is a very compelling business case for including people with disabilities in a company’s hiring practice and he will help spread that message Sept. 27 at an event in Thornhill. Mr. Wafer will be speaking at EmployABILITY disability awareness event hosted by One Voice Network, a no-cost employment service that matches York Region employers with qualified job seekers. The one-day free event invites job seekers with disabilities to make connections with services in the community to support them in their employment search. Students transitioning from high school to the world of work will have the opportunity to connect with local colleges and universities to discuss services for those who want to pursue a post-secondary education and parents and teachers are invited to learn about services for students after high school. For employers and small business owners, accessibility planning workshops will be held throughout the day, featuring a keynote speaker plus a two-hour workshop to help develop customer service plans to better reach customers with disabilities. Mr. Wafer will speak about employers’ expectations of employees, not just because he is disabled himself and understands the barriers that can stand in the way of people with disabilities in the are of employment, but also because he believes hiring them makes good business sense. “Employees who have a disability bring a fresh perspective to the workforce,” he says, pointing to studies that show less absenteeism, higher productivity, greater innovation, much lower turnover and a safer workforce. “These are business benefits all companies should tap into.” Many companies don’t, though, because they buy into a series of myths and misperceptions, leading to unemployment rates as high as 70 per cent for people with disabilities, he says. “We have a huge worker shortage looming in the future,” he says. “Companies that don’t engage the disability community today will lose out later on, when it is too late.” Thursday’s event will also feature a special performance by Justine Hines, a musician with a congenital joint disorder, who will talk about overcoming adversity and
realizing dreams. Tina Stevens, One Voice Network secretary, says the disabled are often overlooked as a resource for skilled labour. Studies show 16 per cent of people in York Region live with a disability and yet many employers have never considered hiring someone with a disability. “They are a largely untapped resource,” she says. There are many intelligent, skilled workers with disabilities who have as much desire to achieve their

Volunteers from across the country will be cleaning up local shorelines this week in one of the largest environmental events in Canada. The Shoreline Cleanup promotes healthy aquatic life by clearing debris, garbage and litter from local rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands. Since 2003, more than 400,000 participants have removed nearly one million kilograms of garbage from our shorelines. Last year, more than 41,000 kilgrams of litter and garbage was picked up along shorelines in Ontario, including some peculiar items, including a payphone, rice cooker, wedding dress, pregnancy test, motorcycle parts, shopping carts and clothing. There are several locations in Markham still in need of site co-ordinators, including Apple Creek Boulevard, Milne Park and Cricklewood Park in Thornhill. Volunteers are encouraged to bring extra garbage bags, rubber gloves and rain boots, as some work is needed in shallow water areas. Last year, more than 17,000 volunteers helped clean up more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline in the province. Here is what they picked up: 41,918 – kilograms of litter removed from shorelines; 334,066 – items removed from shorelines; 3,954 – filled garbage bags; 1,748 – filled recycle bags; 38,344 – food wrappers and containers; 25,456 – plastic bags; 105,602 – cigarettes and cigarette filters were picked up, along with 6,627 cigar tips and 7,345 tobacco packaging; 28,186 – bottle caps and cup lids; 24,894 – plastic bottles; 17,537 – soda cans; 14,858 – cups, plates, forks and knives; and 14,062 – straws and coffee stir sticks

Student president Taylor Goodfield said extracurricular activities, sports teams, semi-formal, prom and tutoring help have been cancelled at their school. Activities run by teacher volunteers have also been cancelled at Stephen Lewis in Vaughan, Westmount in Thornhill, Bayview in Richmond Hill, Woodbridge High and Maple High, she said. Teams and clubs are also being cancelled at random in elementary schools. Teachers’ unions have urged members to make individual decisions to withdraw their extra volunteer duties in response to the province’s Bill 115, which is aimed at reducing the deficit with teacher wage freezes, benefit cuts and a strike ban. Ali Taghva, a student at Richmond Green, gave a passionate speech to launch yesterday’s demonstration, lamenting the loss of the school play, trips and teams that make school feel like a second home. “The world thinks we have no voice, that the students have become both docile and ignorant,” said the 16-year-old, a member of the debate club and Gay-Straight Alliance. “We ask you to show the nation today that we stand united. This is our movement; the students’ movement!” he said, to hundreds of cheering classmates. School staff watching from windows and the parking lot were tightlipped, referring questions to the school principal, who in turn referred questions to the school board communications department.
It’s not far from chaos now as parents and students struggle to determine what clubs and teams will proceed this year. Education Minister Laurel Broten said it’s up to school boards to clear up the confusion by posting information on the status of extracurricular activities online. The York Region school board is considering ways to “maximize communication” on the issue, said spokesperson Licinio Miguelo. “We appreciate it’s frustrating for parents and we are grateful for their understanding and patience.”

No meet-the-teacher nights have been cancelled at any schools in the region, he said, but some have changed the format to an open house with those teachers who have not withdrawn their volunteer time. Elementary school parking lots emptied out by 4 p.m. Monday as teachers expressed their displeasure with the labour stand-off and high school teachers protested Tuesday by wearing black. The unions are in limbo, relying on this haphazard approach to expressing their displeasure until they receive a strike mandate from their members, said York elementary teacher federation president David Clegg. Strike votes are being taken by teacher union locals across the province — Monday York high school teachers vote and Oct. 4 their elementary counterparts will do the same — and they are showing overwhelming support for work action, Mr. Clegg said. So far, 12 of the province’s 73 locals have voted with record-setting results showing “in the 90 percentile” in favour, said Valerie Dugale, federation spokesperson. Colleen Ireland, head of York’s high school union, said the votes are “more a testing of the waters. Anything we
can do, we will. A strong mandate is another step in the process and gives us a general idea of what our teachers are feeling”. It will be up to the unions to decide what form a strike will take, said Mr. Clegg, the former head of the provincial union. Teachers could walk off the job, he said, leaving it to cabinet to intervene, something the recently passed legislation gives it power to do. Should that happen, he said, teachers’ current withdrawal of volunteer work will intensify, he said, and “chaos will ensue”.

Some parents have spoken. Some teachers, who coach varsity sports teams in the York Region Athletic Association, have also voiced their displeasure about the exorbitant hikes in user fees imposed on students wanting to play for their varsity team this year. Those concerns did not fall on deaf ears, as the Ministry of Education announced Monday it will provide financial assistance to prevent the situation from escalating, as the YRAA has already experienced a
decline of up to 29 teams from the fall sports schedule. Following approval of the York Region District School Board’s budget, the ministry has provided additional education grants to support student learning and engagement. As a result, the board will reallocate $300,000 to cover more of the transportation costs for school clubs and teams. The funds are to be divided among all 31 YRAA schools, based on the formula used to determine the existing transportation disbursement of $150,000.
This information was not available when the board’s budget was passed in the spring. “We are committed to equity and excellence in education,” York Region District School Board director of education Ken Thurston said. “We are pleased to provide further support for transportation costs, and make participation in school clubs and athletics more accessible for all of our students.” The additional funding will definitely help lower fees for participation in student teams and clubs, Richmond Hill’s Alexander Mack-
enzie High School principal Shawn Bredin said. “That is good news for all students and families.” Under new guidelines released by the ministry last year, fees cannot be charged for materials students need to graduate, such as textbooks or basic course supplies. As a result, some students at the secondary level had seen an increase in fees for extracurricular athletics and clubs this year, as the board reallocated funding to support curriculum needs. While receiving something is better than nothing, it remains to be
seen if the money allocated for each school is enough to save teams that have been dropped from the fall sports schedule. Steve Shantz, YRAA athletic coordinator, said it’s too late to see a return of any teams that elected to drop out for the fall agenda as schedules have already been drawn up. But, he said, it would help teams currently playing this fall to reduce costs. As well, Shantz was optimistic it will help teams participate in the upcoming winter and spring sport agendas.

Markham’s Jamie Hoffeldt, 23, is getting ready for the roar of the crowd. After initially thinking she had finished in second place, it turns out the University of Western Ontario kinesiology graduate had outdanced more than 200 applicants for the last spot on the Raptors Dance Pak. “This is unreal,” she said. “This is very exciting. There is a lot more pressure. But all the training is worth it.” The contest closed at the end of August and winners were to be announced that day. Ms Hoffeldt was in second place at the close of online voting. However, contest officials went through all the online votes, delaying the outcome by several days, Ms Hoffeldt said. But her optimism didn’t falter. “I wasn’t going away,” she said. “It was going to be either a celebration or full of sorrow. But I was constantly optimistic.” Officials wanted to ensure all votes were legitimate and after recounting the votes, Ms Hoffeldt was bumped up to first place. Ms Hoffeldt has been training three times a week with the dance pak this past week in preparation for the Raptors first pre-season home game Oct. 8. “I’ve danced in front of a crowd before,” she said. “But I’m not thinking about it. I have to make sure I know all the moves before I can think about dancing at the Air Canada Centre.”
Seif Youssef and his two younger brothers Youssef, 20, and Yassin, 15, are on a mission to heighten the awareness of judo in Ontario. They recently opened a dojo in Thornhill known as the Hayabusakan Judo Club. With some 25 judokas ranging from age six to 13 enrolled, the dojo saw five of its students qualify for the junior nationals in the 15 and under division for the first time. “I truly love this sport and I want the best of it to take place here in Ontario,” Seif said. Seif said their intention was to pattern their dojo after those in Japan. “You learn to respect yourself and everyone around you,” he said. “You learn to set and achieve all your goals in judo and in your professional life. It’s about discipline, gaining self-confidence, knowing what you
are capable of with the time and effort and years.” Born in Egypt, Seif, 22, won a national title in his homeland before moving to Canada where he duplicated that feat. Youssef has been an Egyptian national champion when he was 10 and 11 and won nationals six times as a junior and senior in Canada along with placing second and third in prior Pan-Am championships. Yassin, 15, recently earned his black belt and has won junior nationals twice in Canada and has competed in several international competitions. Seif hopes they can add to that number where they could attract at least another 25 beginners before the end of this year. As for their long-range goals, Seif said they hope to build on the foundation they’ve laid into developing competitors who can compete on the world stage.
