The newly amalgamated United Ways of Toronto and York Region this week launched an inaugural regionwide campaign with a goal to raise a record $100 million. Toronto Mayor John Tory helped kick-start the ambitious initiative that runs until the end of the year. This historic fundraiser will bring together more than 164,000 supporters from the waterfront of downtown Toronto to the southern shores of Lake Simcoe, United Way 2015 campaign chairperson Mark Wiseman said. The target is the largest amount the charity

In addition to the $100 million, the agency is committed to raising additional millions on behalf of other charities. Funds raised will support a network of 220 agencies across Toronto and York Region and innovative United Way initiatives as part of the agency’s new strategic plan, United Way president and CEO Susan McIsaac said. “This campaign is about so much more than the money we raise,” she said “It’s about improving people’s lives in the communities

It may seem like young people take technology use for granted, but that’s certainly not the case for all of them. A trio of recent and current college students have founded The Gadget Guides, a business based in North York that aims to educate members of an older generation how they, too, can benefit from the technologies that are so much part of young people’s lives. The business is headquartered near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue. The three young partners are cousins Ami Moyal, 20, and Moe Elmaleh, 21, and their friend and former high school mate Corey Freeman, 19. They attended the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (CHAT) in Richmond Hill. Freeman and Moyal grew up in North York, but now live in Thornhill, while Elmaleh resides in North York.
‘SOME TURNED OFF’ “A lot of seniors express frustration and are turned off at first,” said Moyal, a recent Seneca College grad who studied online marketing and web development. “As we come in and show them how problems can be simply solved, regardless of their age and other false perceptions, they see this stuff is easy.”
The business started in early 2015 after Moyal was inspired by his grandfather, who splits his time between Canada and Israel and communicates with his wife who lives in Israel, using FaceTime and Skype on iPads. “At that point, we thought why aren’t all seniors using technology?” he said. “In this day and age, people are living longer, people have more relatives that live all over the world. There is definitely a need for communication.” He reached out to Elmaleh, who studied human resources, and Freeman, who is studying economics at Columbia University. Freeman said he liked the concept. His parents and grandparents use computers, but they have their own struggles that he helps solve. While communication is a big part of what The Gadget Guides teach their clients, technology provides access to much more than that, such as news and history. “There’s more content online, that is readable, than has ever been possible before to people,” Freeman said. “My grandparents read the news every day, but the breadth of news, the fact that you can go to a news site that’s located in a foreign country to give you a different perspective on things, those kinds of things were impossible before.” When the business formed, the trio made cold calls to retire-
ment residences, hoping whoever answered didn’t hang up. Now, a few months later, through word of mouth, their reputation has spread and clients are calling them. They opened an office, with financial support from a relative, and hired their first instructor (previously they were the sole instructors). They teach in class settings, mostly at retirement homes, usually in North York, but beyond Toronto as well. They do one-on-one lessons and small group sessions. Moyal recalled a moment when he was teaching a class about Street View, a feature of Google Maps that allows users to view areas of the world as seen from the street.

Thornhill entrepreneurs help older adults with technology
3
‘HE WAS BLOWN AWAY’ “Two weeks ago, we showed this man from Nova Scotia, not his city, not his town, but his street and the house he grew up in. He was totally blown away. This is actually where he proposed to his late wife. Moments like that, where the class stops and they can see this is something they thought was impossible...It’s an experience of a lifetime,” he said. He said the biggest frustration for clients is their own self doubt. However, he said today’s technology is easy, and it can become part of a person’s daily life, no matter their age. Freeman agreed. He said older adults will be frustrated with the

After witnessing the struggles of older adults in their own families with high-tech devices, Ami Moyal, left, and Corey Freeman, both of Thornhill, (along with Moe Elmaleh) founded The Gadget Guides to teach seniors how to use modern technologies such as computers and tablets. constantly changing and evolving technologies, but those changes generally make things easier. “Technology constantly does evolve,” Freeman said. “But the thing with technology is that it gets easier and easier to learn. I think if we were to teach our clients how
to use computers from the 1970s, it would be a lot more difficult than it is to teach them how to use the iPad.”

Youthful Thornhill animal advocates start Laws4Paws By Simone Joseph
sjoseph@yrmg.com
Nikol Rudakov created Laws4Paws with help from Hope Dewan and Joy Ye, the 14-year-old’s best friends and cofounders of the school club to help animals. They created the club last year as Grade 8 Henderson Avenue Public School students. Laws4Paws aims to stop animal cruelty and change laws and penalties relating to the abuse and torture of animals. “We want to make a difference,” Rudakov said. “We want animals to be adopted, not be euthanized…We hope to make a difference in any way we can.” Her Thornhill group collected electronic waste, such as ink cartridges and cellphones, this past school year to support The Canadian Dachshund Rescue, a charity dedicated to saving and rehoming abandoned, neglected, and unwanted dachshund and dachshund mixes. Laws4Paws also collected about 3,000 pop cans in 2-1/2 weeks. The items were sent to two companies (Think Recycle and TerraCycle) so that they could give money to a shelter in return. Each teen has her own reason for wanting to help animals. “I believe that animals, like us, deserve a place on this planet,” Ye said. “However, many animals are being treated unfairly and cruelly.”
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
Nikol Rudakov, left, with best friends Joy Ye and Hope Dewan (not shown) started Laws4Paws to advocate for better laws to protect animals. Dewan pointed out that millions of animals die every day, mainly because of human impact. “You cannot stop millions of animals from their terrible fate, but you can give a loving home to a stray dog. Or give food to a starving kitten,” she said.
Rudakov’s activism dates back to Grade 7 when she had to write a persuasive letter covering a topic about which she was passionate. She decided to write about pet euthanasia. She was then so passionate and upset about the topic, she decided to send a letter to Thornhill MP Peter Kent, stating that Markham should have a no-kill animal shelter. Soon after, she started doing petitions, research, fundraising, and doing her best to spread the word about this topic both at school and using social media. She also wrote another letter suggesting Thornhill’s Woodland Public School property on Henderson Avenue be turned into an off-leash dog park. Rudakov starts Grade 9 at St. Roberts Catholic High School with her two co-founders/best friends next week. The trio is not sure whether the club will still continue at Henderson Avenue P.S., though they hope it will. They also hope their club will survive and thrive in their new high school. “We hope to continue helping rescue organizations and shelters as well as travel with animal supplies such as food, toys and water and give to stray animals,” Rudakov said. “At high school we just really want to give the animals a voice and to reach a large audience.”

PowerStream Merger Update Merger Decision Expected in October 2015 Markham’s General Committee and Council will welcome public deputations in the future on the proposal. A number of PowerStream meetings were held over the spring and summer, and meetings will continue regarding financial and legal due diligence on the proposed transaction. In April 2015, the Government of Ontario announced negotiations were underway for a potential three-way merger of PowerStream Holdings Inc., Enersource Corporation and Horizon Utilities Corporation, and an opportunity to acquire Hydro One Brampton Networks Inc. from the Province. The three PowerStream shareholders, Markham, Vaughan and Barrie (and their holding companies) have partnered to evaluate the proposed merger transaction. The City of Markham’s holding company is Markham Enterprises Corporation (MEC). The City of Markham owns 100% of MEC, which in turn owns 34.2% of PowerStream Holdings Inc. shares. MEC is governed by a Board of Directors, comprised of the 13 Markham Councillors. Navigant Inc. and BDR North America have been retained to provide independent advice and financial due diligence, and Gowlings LLP has been retained to undertake legal due diligence and support on the decision- making process. The MEC Board has held meetings over the spring and summer, and will continue to meet regarding financial and legal due diligence on the proposed transaction. On May 26, 2015, a report was received at Markham’s General Committee on the proposed transaction, including the expected timelines, as well as the negotiation and decision-making process. This report was also received by Council on June 15, 2015. To read the report received by Council on June 15, 2015, visit markham.ca. Vaughan seeks feedback on city events, programs
Tips on raccoons, wildlife from Ministry of Natural Resources The Ministry of Natural Resources offered the following tips and suggestions following last week’s Thornhill Liberal story — ‘Resident frustrated by sick raccoon problem’. Who should Vaughan residents go to for help when they find sick raccoons? If a sick or injured wild animal is found, residents can contact a wildlife rehabilitator, a local veterinarian, municipal animal services/ animal control or a private wildlife removal company. These resources can help assess the situation and provide advice on what to do. Keep in mind the following important points: • If a sick, injured or abandoned wild animal presents a public safety risk, call York Regional Police.
• If you come across a sick or diseased wild animal that you suspect may be a public health risk, contact your regional or local health unit right away. For more information, call Service Ontario toll-free at 1-866-532-3161. • Residents should not approach a raccoon that appears sick or remove an animal from its natural habitat (the animal may not need assistance, and you could do more harm than good). • Check a sick animal periodically for 24 to 48 hours. • Keep your distance. • A list of wildlife rehabilitators can be found on the Ontario.ca website at the following link: http://www.ontario.ca/environment-and-energy/find-wildlife-rehabilitator.
Skate for Sarah honours brave Thornhill girl Sarah Watkin passed away last year on Nov. 2. after succumbing to a rare and extremely aggressive form of blood cancer at the age of seven. But the late Thornhill resident’s life still remains close to many people’s hearts. In memory of Watkin, the JCC’s of Greater Toronto will host its inaugural Skate for Sarah Hockey Tournament at the Pavilion and Garnet A Williams Arena Oct. 11, both located in Vaughan. The one-day tournament will feature divisions with youth and adults. As part of the day’s festivities, there will
also be entertainment, family activities and a number of team and individual prizes to be given out. Proceeds from the charitable event will go to children dealing with pediatric disability and illness and for youth scholarships for sports and recreational programs. In addition, the tournament hopes to raise the awareness of Sarah’s Drive for Hope, which encourages the need for blood and bone marrow donors. For teams wishing to take part, call 416665-1836 or email admin@jccchaisports.com - Michael Hayakawa

The city wants to pick your brain about the types of events, activities and programs you’d like to see offered at city hall. To make that happen officials are encouraging residents to participate online either by tweeting ideas to @ City_of_Vaughan using the hashtag #MyVaughanCityHall; commenting on the city’s Facebook page at facebook. com/thecityofvaughan or emailing vaughanvision@vaughan.ca. Alternatively, the city has also created an online feedback forum at http:// myvaughan.mindmixer.com/ There are also plans in the works for a panel discussion, featuring experts in urban design, architecture and community development. A date has not yet been set for the panel discussion. It’s all part of an public engagement campaign dubbed My Vaughan City Hall. “Public opinion is a powerful tool that provides direction for how we move our agenda forward,” Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said. “This mindful and inclusive approach to planning is in keeping with our vision to create communities that are livable and attractive to residents and
visitors alike.” Planning for the civic centre campus, at Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive began back in 2002. At that time, the concept was to develop the city-owned property into a campus featuring a new city hall, a library, a performing arts and cultural centre as well recreation facilities and other government offices. The plan was revised in 2005 and again in 2013 at which time city council directed staff to seek public input on the future development of the campus. In 2014, city council approved funding of $50,000 to undertake a public consultation process, which will be led by LURA Consulting. Currently, the site is home to city hall and a four-storey affordable housing complex for seniors while the avantgarde resource library is under construction. Input garnered from the public to date shows there’s interest in seeing a number of additions to the campus including an ice rink, a splash pad, a bike trail, performance space and a community garden. People have also expressed an interest in seeing the campus used for movie screenings, pop-up galleries and a farmers market, among other things.

I’ll send a private message. “Wait, I have a call.... “Becky, I know you’re only 10, but if you don’t perform that emergency tracheotomy with a pen, the president is not going to survive. Be brave! I’ll send you an instructional video. Check your whatsapp.” No, unfortunately or fortunately, my life is not nearly as interesting as the life of every other driver around me, seems to be. I just put down my phone and drive my car to where I mean to go, and if I do ever need to make a very brief call, I do a hands-free thing that did not exactly cost very much to install, considering the alternative is breaking the law or, heaven forbid, crashing into something or someone because my attention has been divided between my phone and the road. Although where I tend to drive, incredibly, there are people all around me who have a phone either firmly held to their ear or, the one I find interesting, firmly held in front of their face as they drive along. Then, of course, there’s the car that is drifting over the line every few hundred metres, driver texting and driving their merry way along. Do you pull up beside the person with head pointed upward but
Bernie O’Neill eyes looking down, the light changes, and their car stays put? I’m not sure who they think they are fooling but, hey, it’s entertaining. All talented multi-taskers, these drivers speed up and weave in and out of traffic once they do put the phone down, and I don’t mind, because, of course, they are on their way to the emergency room to save the Pope or are headed to the Pentagon to advise U.S. generals about their response to an impending nuclear attack. Me, I’m just driving. This week, new fines came in to effect in Ontario that have hiked the penalty for people who are driving distractedly to $490. But considering it’s not unusual to be in a car and see the driver ahead of you, behind you and beside you on their cellphone, either talking or texting or, I guess, online, looking at funny cat videos, I wonder how much impact it will have. That’s a lot of cracking down for one crackdown. One solution might be to take people’s cars away, so they can ride transit while using the phone. Could be a boon for Viva or GO. Although perhaps if police confiscated their phones, that would get people’s attention, because that appears to be the one item they dearly love, in some cases it would appear, more than life itself. Officer: “Sir, I’m taking your phone to the police station.” Driver: “My phone? I’ll come with you!” I hope the crackdown works. In the meantime, as long as you drive under the assumption everyone else on the road is either inebriated or posting to Facebook, you will have taken a sufficient amount of caution.
Four years ago, I paid attention to the federal election for the first time. Throughout the campaign, one party stuck out in my mind: the NDP. The ideals and goals put forth by the late Jack Layton fell in line with what I believe Canada should do for its citizens and the world. I was sure that come the next election I would be supporting the NDP, as they sought to remove Stephen Harper from the prime minister’s office. However, a lot can change in four years. After Jack Layton’s passing, the NDP found a new leader in Tom Mulcair, a lawyer from Ottawa. At first, he seemed to be the perfect candidate to carry on Layton’s legacy. He seemed to share the same left-leaning ideals and is an excellent debater. Before this election campaign, I was certain once again that I would support the NDP. However, in this campaign Mulcair has made some announcements that have not only surprised me, but some of his own party members, as well. For example, he has promised to run a balanced budget in his first year as prime minister. This announcement not only shocked me, but, I believe, many other NDP supporters. The NDP’s priority has always been to invest in services for Canadian citizens. Mulcair seems to be trying to appeal to right-leaning voters, who are perhaps fed up with Harper. I do understand what Mulcair is trying to convey by promising a balanced budget. He is trying to get undecided voters and disillusioned Conservatives to vote for him, by projecting an image of being a safe and responsible leader. However, by projecting
this image of himself and the NDP, he is ultimately betraying the progressive ideas the NDP were founded on, and he is betraying the NDP supporters who have worked so hard to become the official opposition, an unprecedented feat. When he was first elected to be the leader of NDP, Mulcair looked like the perfect candidate to finally defeat Harper. However, this campaign has revealed much about his strategy to accomplish this. I feel he has betrayed the people who have worked so hard to get him where he is today, and compromised the ideals of the NDP. Mulcair should not be the NDP leader who finally becomes prime minister, as that honour should be reserved for a leader who respects the progressive nature of the party.

SEND A LETTER: Email letters to mbeck@yrmg.com written the city and CN to see if it’s possible to paint or improve the CN overpasses near where I live at Markham Road and 14th Avenue. There are two overpasses and they are riddled with graffiti and rust. I, too, had the idea of having local art students design something that could be painted on the sides, serving to beautify our streetscape while promoting local talent. All my letters were ignored or at least denied. In the end, our residents association managed to convince the city to put up banners on the sides of the overpasses which were supposed to communicate a community message on one half and a small advertisement relating to the message on the other. This was definitely an improvement, however, it seems the entire banner is being used for advertisement or it is missing altogether i.e. when it rips they do not replace it.

The Thornhill Golf and Country Club is not only tailored for those who enjoy being out on their fairways. The facility, which was established as a golf club in 1922 and launched a curling rink in 1963, is now trying to create an awareness of the importance of being physically fit. In doing so, the club officially launched a 3,000squre-foot state-of-the-art fitness facility, Saturday. Peter Armstrong, Thornhill Golf and Country Club marketing and communications manager, said the new facility located on their property includes a weight room, stretching area, new locker rooms for men and women along with a sauna and treatment room. There are also two fitness instructors on-site. By the start of the new year, two more fitness instructors are expected to be added to the staff. In creating the fitness centre, which currently provides 75 hours of training per week, Armstrong was quick to point out it is not just for those who hold club memberships for golf or curling. The club will open its doors and offer separate memberships at $399 for a 12-week period to join their fitness centre. “It’s for people just looking to join a better gym and where there’s no lineups,” Armstrong said. “It could be for a hockey player looking for specific things they can do to improve their fitness by working with one of our trainers. “What we offer is a boutique style of fitness centre.” The fitness facility is just part of a $5-million renovation project approved by members that will also include the creation of a 35-foot by 75-foot outdoor pool and the conversion of their existing outdoor tennis court facility to clay from hard court. In creating the pool, to be located near the tennis area, Armstrong noted one of the existing courts will be removed. Currently awaiting approval for this segment of expansion from the City of Vaughan, Armstrong said if all goes according to schedule, they hope have the pool and renovated tennis courts ready for use by next summer. “Not only is this great for our membership, but it’s great for those wishing to join our fitness centre,” he said. Mental health focus of two events Home on The Hill Supportive Housing has been promoting mental health issues and community awareness in recent years, and two upcoming events in Richmond Hill will continue to do so, while helping families with mental health struggles. On Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., Home on the Hill will be presenting another in the continuing series of lectures, this time the guest speaker will be Dr. Amir Barsoum. The lecture by Dr. Barsoum will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 10030 Yonge St. in Richmond Hill and will explore the relationship between marijuana and psychosis. A practising psychiatrist for 15 years, currently on staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Dr. Barsoum is also on staff at Bellwood Health Services, an addiction facility in Toronto, where he helps patients with mental disorders and addictions. He will describe the symptoms and signs of psychosis, the current understanding of the biology of psychosis, as well as discuss the effects of marijuana on the brain. Dr. Barsoum has also invited a patient to share his experience of having suffered from
marijuana addiction and marijuana-induced psychosis. The lecture is generously funded by Canadian Mental Health. All members of the community are invited to attend the presentation and may register via email with Kathleen Mochnacki of Home on the Hill, at kathleen.mochnacki@gmail.com. A related event will take place Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., when Home on the Hill will host its inaugural Family Support Group meeting. It will also be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 10030 Yonge St. and is open to family members of relatives living with serious mental illness. The introductory meeting will be held to determine needs of families moving forward. Discussion topics will include: supportive counselling, system navigation, grief and advocacy. To register for the support group meeting, contact Maggie at Maggie@rveltheer.com. Parking at St. Mary’s Anglican for both meetings is at the rear of the church, via McLatchy Lane, just west of Yonge Street on the north side of Major Mackenzie. To put it mildly, Thornhill Multisport has evolved and continues to gain popularity through the years. What began with just eight members in 2004 as the Thornhill Masters Aquatic Club, the organization now known as Thornhill Multisport offers swimming, triathlon and a learn to swim program to more than 100 current members who hail from Thornhill, Vaughan, Markham and the neighbouring Greater Toronto Area. Preparing to enter its 12th season, Thornhill Multisport will operate out of three facilities, including the recently constructed Markham Pan Am Sports Centre, Thornlea Pool and North Thornhill Community Centre in Vaughan. Along with offering regular weekly classes, Thornhill Multisport has made its presence felt at the competitive level.
Mark your calendar for the 39th Thornhill Village Festival, Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., held on the side streets of historic Thornhill, including Colborne Street, Eliza Street, Thornhill Summit Drive and Church Lane. Emjoy more than 100 booths, a variety of food, a beer garden, music, events for children, battle re-enactments and more. Entrance for 2015 is by voluntary donation, suggested: adults $2, seniors and teens (13-19) $1. Children (12 and under) and those in heritage costume are admitted free. For details, visit www.thornhillfestival.org
Members earned a second-place finish at last year’s Ontario Masters Swimming Championships and six members competed in Ironman competitions. Members can also be seen at open water swim events, numerous running events and worthwhile charitable causes, including The Ride to Conquer Cancer. For the upcoming fall season, the Thornhill Multisport is also excited to serve as the host club for the 2016 Ontario Masters Swimming Championships. Hosting this event for the first time, it will be conducted at the Markham Pan Am Sports Centre April 1 to 3, 2016. Ian Feldman, Thornhill Multisport head coach, said the door is still open for anyone wishing to enroll in any of their programs. “The club’s philosophy is based on inclusion. Anyone who is interested in getting
into the sports of masters swimming or triathlon are invited to join,” he said. “What the club offers is experienced coaching in great facilities.” Elated by what their organization has accomplished through the years, Feldman said those who might be interested are invited to see what the club is all about when
workouts begin at the North Thornhill Community Centre from Sept. 14 through 16.

Markham runners help earn bronze at international meet BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
From disappointment to jubilation. All in a matter of minutes. That’s the roller coaster of emotion two Markham runners experienced when they took to the track at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, Saturday. As members of Canada’s men’s 4 x 100metre relay team, Justyn Warner, 28, and Andre De Grasse, 20, were disappointed after they finished fourth in the race behind the United States. But after race officials reviewed the event, Warner, De Grasse and their other teammates that included Aaron Brown of Toronto and Brendon Rodney of Brampton, were all smiles when they were officially awarded third place after running the event in a time of 38.13 seconds. It was determined the United States team was disqualified as their last baton exchange took place well outside the restricted area. For the Canadian team, it made amends after they were disqualified and denied a gold medal at the recent 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and a bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. “It was nice,” Warner, a former Middlefield Collegiate student, said in an Athletics Canada news release. “Peter (Ericsson, Canada’s head coach) told us to stay down on the track, there might have been a DQ (disqualification). I’m happy as a team. We have six guys, anybody

could have stepped on the track and run well, whether Gavin (Smelley) was ready to run or not (groin injury), we just had to come together as a team.” Running second in the relay, De Grasse said it really did not matter who ran the anchor position. This after De Grasse earlier in the championships took the bronze in the men’s 100m race. The bottom line, the Milliken Mills High School graduate was quick to point out, was that they got to the medal podium. “Coach Glenroy (Gilbert) was trying to get us an early lead, he put me on the backstretch, Aaron (Brown) or Justyn (Warner) can hold it down in the anchor position and execute the race, I don’t think it really mattered, it’s all in the coach’s hands. “I had an amazing season, to end it like that, my last run, I’m just happy we came out with the bronze.” The bronze won by the foursome duplicated a feat the 4 x 100m men’s relay team accomplished at the 2013 IAAF World Championships. In other events involving Markham participants, Phylicia George advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 100m hurdles, but finished fifth in her heat with a time of 12.87 Friday. The former Father Michael McGivney Academy High School student unfortunately, did not qualify for the final.

In Loving Memory of JASON BOODRAM September 2nd, 2008 No words we write can ever say How much we miss you every day As time goes by the loneliness grows, Hearts ache with sorrow, And secret tears flow. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And photos in a frame. No one knows our sorrow, No one sees us weep, The love we have for you Is in our hearts to keep. To spend one more day with you, Touch your face, talk a while Share your dreams, plans, Hear your laugh, See your smile. We’ve never stopped loving you, We know we never will. Deep inside our hearts There’s a place no one can fill. We love you and miss you, Our precious Jason. Love always, Mom, Dad and Alan

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. T.D.
