A park in east Thornhill was named in his honour in 2014 to recognize him for overcoming personal adversities, including being the lone member of his family to survive the Holocaust. PARENTS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN The Wills Lawyer Since I have started my wills practice, I have done many wills for couples with young children. One couple, in particular, had such an impact on me that I decided to write an article about what parents with young children need to know about wills. While I was taking notes in our first meeting, the wife looked at me and said “we have been wanting to do this for so long, but we put it off, and now I can finally sleep at night.” The husband then said “since our first child was born, Michelle Kotzer we’ve always been worried about what would happen to our children if we were in a catastrophic accident. We feel so much better that this is being done.” What happens if you pass away without a will leaving young children? Firstly, there is no executor in place to look after your estate on your death. Secondly, there is no guardian named who can look after your children. In fact, there could be a custody battle between your family and your spouse’s family over who should raise the children. As far as inheritance, your children will inherit everything you own at the age of eighteen. Remember how you were at eighteen. Do you think you could have handled a large inheritance? By law, your children would automatically receive their inheritance at eighteen regardless of their level of maturity. These are only some of the issues that occur, if you pass away without a will. No parent wants to leave a mess for their family. When making a will what are some things you should consider? First, who should you appoint as your executor? You can appoint your spouse as your primary executor. In fact, this is what is usually done. What about the back up executor? Who will look after your estate in case your spouse is not alive when you die? You can appoint someone else you trust like your parents or siblings. You should also consider whether the person you are appointing as executor has the time to take on the task. An executor may be trustworthy, but he or she may be unwilling to accept the appointment. Executors have the right to decline the appointment at the outset when they find out that they have been named. It is advisable to obtain your executor’s consent. What about the guardian? If you have minor children your will should appoint a guardian to look after them in the event that you and your spouse both pass away before your children reach the age of majority. Be careful about appointing a married couple as guardians. You should feel very confident about their ability to get along together before concluding an appointment of this nature. If they get separated or divorced, who will have custody of your children? For example, if you appoint your brother and his wife as guardians, and after your death they separate, will there be a custody battle for your children? To solve this, it might be prudent to appoint your brother alone. Your parents are not always the best choice as guardians because they may not out live you, and if they do, they may be elderly and unable to act.

Guidelines should protect sex workers, Onyx Ronin says
BILL C-36 Bill C-36 was ushered in under the Tories in 2014 and considers the selling of sex as legal, but makes the buying of "sexual services" a criminal offence. It also makes it illegal for anyone to communicate for the purpose of prostitution and bans advertising the sexual services of others.
JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com Onyx Ronin lives in the shadows when she’s at work. She and countless women like her occupy the grey areas of law, somewhere between legitimacy and criminality. Society at large might prefer to forget her profession exists, rather than admit it’s not only real, but a flourishing industry. She’s a "body rubber," as defined by the laws that govern her career. She has never been arrested and says she sees police "maybe once a year." People might think Ronin, her working name, and her peers destroy families and corrupt men. But she sees her job in a different light and believes you should, too. "I feel that I relieve a lot of road rage," she said during a recent interview. "People are stressed in this world; when they’re on the table, they are happy and relaxed. When I’m touching someone, I feel relaxed and comfortable and I’m sharing an experience with someone. "It’s about selling intimacy, the human touch, to feel connected to someone else." The 28-year-old employee of the female-owned MUSE Spa, which has locations in Vaughan and Toronto, is open about her work. She says "there’s nothing wrong with having sex for money," although that’s not what she does.

Onyx Ronin is a body rubber (masseuse). She is standing up for the profession and saying the laws should be changed to better protect the women involved. "People do all sorts of things for money," she says. "I don’t understand why we are so stuck on this idea that sexuality can’t be commodified in this one particular way when people accept it being commodified in so many other ways." At the spa, she gives "full body erotic massages" largely to men aged 40 to 50. She says MUSE targets men at a higher price point, suggesting her clients are rarely, if ever, intoxicated, and very "respectful." But she says she can’t speak
generally about her profession: "As for other girls, I don’t know." Ronin studied classical music at the University of Toronto, before studying sex work as part of her master’s degree at York University. After graduation, she worked retail jobs. She entered the industry at 25 and immediately saw an extraordinary jump in pay, she says, explaining she now makes between $80 and $300 an hour. According to MUSE’s website, 30 minutes with an attendant costs $120, $40
for a "door fee" and $80 of which goes to the attendant. Ronin decided to share her story and opinions after MUSE’s Vaughan location was robbed on Dec. 28, 2016. At the time, York Regional Police Det. Sgt. Dave Noseworthy said many massage parlours don’t report robberies because neither employers nor employees want publicity. That, says Ronin, shows the law, in its current form, doesn’t properly protect workers in the sex trade. "I would like to see law-
makers looking through the lens that there’s nothing morally wrong with providing sexual services for money," she said. "I would like them to ask, ’How can we help people work without shame and afford them the same rights that everyone else is protected by law?’" The current law, a complicated set of guidelines, criminalizes the buying of sex and the advertising of "sexual services", York police Det. McLeod added that the Minister of Justice has committed to monitoring the impacts of Bill C-36, which regulates prostitution. Ronin, like others in her trade, needs a municipality-issued licence that has her name, photograph and home address to work as a "body rubber." She must also pass a communicable disease test.She suggests the federal government needs to draft new measures to ensure women and girls are not being forced into the profession and exploited. She envisions a society where all sex workers are in constant contact with the authorities, which would improve the chances of helping those that don’t want to be there. "It should be legal and protected, just like every other job," she said. Ronin says her job doesn’t suit everyone and businesses see a high turnover, but she insists that her experience has been positive. "As much as this job is not for everyone, it is for me," she said. "I’m a normal person, I am a happy person. I am choosing to do this."

Law should protect sex workers While it may be a touchy subject, it’s high time the federal government revisited its laws governing the sale and purchase of sexual services. Bill C-36, or the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, was enacted in December 2014, after the Supreme Court had found a year earlier that sections of the previous laws governing prostitution were unconstitutional. It was touted by the federal government as targeting purchasers of sexual services, or johns, while protecting those engaged in sex work. Others, however, were critical of the new law and argued it not only made sex workers more vulnerable to becoming victims of crime, but contained many of the same issues that led to its predecessor being repealed. Two years later, the profession remains a risky business for many of those in it. That’s why people such as Onyx Ronin, who works as a "body rubber" at the female-run MUSE Spa, are speaking up about the law’s The profession shortcomings. However, by making it and other sexual services unlawful, or shunting them into a legal grey area, it drives this activity underground, thus inviting an element of criminality that can lead to human trafficking, assaults and murders against sex workers and a host of other ills. Instead of the status quo, Ronin would like to see the laws facilitate constant contact between those in the profession and the authorities. It would not only improve safety, but also ensure no one is forced into it. We agree. While regulations would be necessary no one wants solicitation near a school for example the law shouldn’t endanger sex workers or foster a breeding ground for dangerous criminality.

Correct to call mosque attack terrorism Prime Minister Trudeau is correct by calling the attack in a mosque in Quebec, a terrorist attack. I do hope that the government of Canada stops funding The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, with their recent gift of $25 million, as UNRWA has funded terrorist activities, racism in the classroom and incitement. Canada is the seventh largest funder of UNRWA in the world. UNWRA must be held to account. Canada should no longer fund them, until this body of the U.N. stops supporting terrorism. Re: Too Close for Comfort, Jan.26. Given that there were 144 rails and train related accidents last year alone and that we will soon have another 30,000 new homes added to our area within 10 years, I find it disturbing that no one has given any thought to redirecting these trains to less populated areas. After looking at Mississauga Mayor, Bonnie Crombie’s website, I found that she and her local cohorts are proposing to divert rail freight traffic through Markham, Vaughan and Pickering so that they can have all-day, two-way GO Train service. The Germans retreated.Canadian assault troops went over the ridge in early morning Easter Monday, 1917. They attacked in to enemy lines amid snow, sleet and driving wind. Some 3,593 Canadian soldiers were killed during the battle.France granted Canada 107 hectares of land at Vimy to build and maintain a memorial in appreciation of Canada’s war efforts.

Holocaust survivor became educational speaker l Continued from front
having to endure months of harrowing conditions in the ghetto and slave labour camps until he was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in 1943. He was recruited as a runner for the Polish underground inside the camp and was implicated in the plot to blow up the camp crematoria in Oct. 1944. Because of his involvement, he was tortured by the Gestapo. His finger-
nails were removed and he was beaten and left for dead. The beating was so severe that his eye popped out of his head. Because of the beating, he was left deaf in one ear and blind in one eye. One job he had to endure during the Holocaust was collecting the dead bodies of prisoners who had thrown themselves against an electrified fence. Elin Beaumont of the Azrieli Foundation says de-
spite what he endured, Opatowski had a positive attitude. "His outlook was to be happy and to always be grateful for what you have. No complaining, be fair to everyone. Hatred is a word that we shouldn’t be using. Life should be lived in harmony." The Azrieli Foundation, a non-profit organization, preserves, publishes and shares the memoirs of Holocaust survivors who have come to Canada.
Markham Councillor Valerie Burke read Opatowski’s memoir, Gatehouse to Hell, and says she felt she got to know him personally. "It was an unbelievable experience he had and he was so strong mentally. One reason he got through this horrific experience was he had such strong determination," she said. In an earlier interview with The Thornhill Liberal, Opatowski said that he wanted to educate students

His journey is retold in a documentary entitled Following in the Footsteps of Felix Opatowski. Opatowski - a public speaker, educator and author - lived in Thornhill for 28 years.
