SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The life of dairy farmer is not sexy. It consists of milking cows 365 days a year for decades on end. A vacation? Not likely. You’ll be hard-pressed to fit in an afternoon wedding in between milking sessions. That secluded lifestyle was thrust into the public eye last month when U.S. President Donald Trump spoke out against the Canadian dairy supply management system. It certainly was surprising for Whitchurch-Stouffville dairy farmer Brad Hulshof. He is one of around 25 dairy farmers left in York Region. "I don’t think any dairy farmer was expecting to get shots fired from the U.S. president," Hulshof said. Schomberg dairy farmer John Phillips says the Canadian Dairy industry is often misunderstood. "I’m surprised and not surprised," he said. "We didn’t do anything wrong." All of it sudden it seems politicians in the United States and Canada find milk great again as it becomes somewhat of a political football. Conservative Party leadership favourite Maxime Bernier’s most talked about policy is his plan to phase out supply management in Canada’s milk, chicken and egg business. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to come out in defence of the country’s supply management system after Trump’s comments and the fuss it stirred. "It was a surprising turn of events that brought agriculture to the forefront," Hulshof said. "The (supply

Brad Hulshof, along with other farmers, aren’t too worried about U.S president Donald Trump’s tough talk toward the Canadian dairy industry. management) system works really well. We are the envy of the dairy farming world." Trump made his comments in Wisconsin, which is the dairy engine of the United States. Grassland Dairy Products had announced that it would be reducing its milk intake. As a result, 75 U.S. dairy farms would need to find another place to sell their milk. They took aim at the Canadian dairy industry for creating a new classification of milk to compete against milk proteins that were largely imported to
Canada. Hulshof didn’t think the criticism held much weight. Milk proteins, or diafiltered milk, wasn’t covered in the NAFTA agreement so U.S. producers had unfettered access to the Canadian market. As the demand for this product became greater, the dairy farmers decided they had to do something. "We competitively priced our dairy to match them," Hulshof said. Phillips echoed that sentiment. He said Canada’s supply management system ensures that there isn’t
an overproduction of milk which can lead to a market crash in the industry. "The United States have bailed out dairy twice in the last 20 years," he said. The Canadian government doesn’t have to give any money to keep farmers afloat, he said. What mystifies Hulshof is that the United States actually has a trade surplus with Canada when it comes to dairy products. "We allow import into our country," he said. "There are lots of imports that still come in." The Dairy Farmers of
Ontario pointed out in the wake of Trump’s comments that the United States enjoys a significant trade surplus in the dairy trade. According to the DFO, the trade surplus was roughly $445 million in 2016. While supply management works well for the dairy farmers, there are many who think it is a bad system for the consumer. York University economics professor Bernie Wolf is one who is anti-supply management. He said the problem is Canadians end up paying an artificially
high price for milk because the system doesn’t allow for market forces to drive down the price. "That has the most impact on the poor people in society," he said. Another unseen cost of the system, according to Wolf, is that the Canadian government has to sacrifice other things while making international trade agreements to protect the "sacred cow" that is Canadian dairy. If Canadians could see what we gave up to protect our national dairy industry, they might not be in favour of the system, Wolf said. Not every economist agrees. University of Guelph economics professor Mike von Massow said the current system is working well. "The benefits accrue to dairy producers and rural communities," he said. The problem with dairy is it is a highly perishable product, so if processors say they can’t take anymore product there’s not a lot farmers can do with it, von Massow said. While some claim the supply management system makes the cost of milk higher than it is in the United States, von Massow said Canadians pay more for food across the board than people in the United States. Canadians pay more for beef, bread and pop, which are industries that don’t have supply management. One final benefit of the system in Canada is the animal welfare aspect of it. "We don’t have the same number of large, 1,000-cow dairies as they do in the United States," he said. "Cows in Canadian dairies on average live longer and are productive longer. We don’t push them as hard."

Weathered flags should be grounded With Canada Day celebrations, marking the 150th year in our nation’s history, rapidly approaching, flags will be flying from coast to coast. In many cases, bright, pristine Canadian flags will be front and centre at legions, government offices, businesses, and private residences. They’ll be prominent at countless special events and even attached to cars and trucks. And, unfortunately, there might be a few cases where our cherished symbol looks less than pristine, maybe even a bit ragged and It might surprise threadbare. It might surprise some some to realize to realize that there are some pretty specific rules that there are regarding the display of our nation emblem, the some pretty Maple Leaf. specific rules Policies are in place to govern how the flag is regarding the flown from everything from attaching it to a vehicle or display of our building, to suspending it nation emblem, above a street, or using it a flagpole. the Maple Leaf. on For example, if a flag is suspended above a street, the rule is: "The upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should face north in an east-west street. "The upper part of the leaf should face east in a northsouth street." If you want to hang a flag flat against a surface, here’s the rule you’ll need to follow: "If hung horizontally, the upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should be up and the stem down. "If hung vertically, the flag should be placed so that the upper part of the leaf points to the left and the stem to the right from the point of view of the observer facing the flag." Want to fold your flag? The ceremonial folding of our national flag involves six to eight people following six specific steps. Has your flag seen better days? "When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way." We’re not quite sure what constitutes a ’dignified’ disposal, but we do concur with the notion that the Maple Leaf should fly only in a pristine condition. To display Canada’s national flag is to demonstrate one’s patriotism and appreciation for our good fortune in being able to live in the best country on the planet. To display a weathered, shabby version is to do a disservice to this most important symbol of our nation.

Green space should be protected Re: Thornhill’s Ladies Golf Club of Toronto selling two parcels of land, April 17. I was very disheartened when I read the above story in the Thornhill Liberal. I live on Bayview just across from the golf course at Landmark. We enjoy looking out our window at the wonderful view we get and the changing seasons. It’s great watching the geese and ducks as well when they are around. Just last year thanks to Councillor Burke we got signs put up to watch for geese crossing as I had seen a couple of them get hit/run over by speeding traffic as they crossed the street to and from the golf course.
• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • l MORE ONLINE See all our published letters to the editor online at yorkregion.com I understand the need for the golf club to secure its future but is selling to a developer the right way? I think public opinion should also be taken on this as it affects those living in the area. We have enough of highrise construction going on in the area when real estate prices are at a ridiculous high price. Townhomes are being built on John Street — at the start the price was around $800K and when I look at the developer’s website now they indicate starting price is $1.4M. Who has so much money to buy a townhome at such a price though it is nearly sold out. I don’t

think it is worth the money. Highrise buildings are built and then does anybody see how many are vacant as the owner doesn’t actually live there but buys for investment and rents it out or waits to sell it at a still higher price. As well do we really need the additional traffic, pollution, etc. A lot of our green space is being destroyed to make way for homes and highrises and it isn’t even affordable housing. We need to protect our environment and wildlife. I request the club and its members to give careful consideration before selling the land or what it will be used for. Develop it into a nice
park connecting it to Pomona Mills Park with walking/jogging/cycling trails and a park for children to play in — well lit and with benches. Kanizehn Patel Thornhill

As well as being a Wills lawyer, I am also a The Wills Lawyer professional songwriter. I am so proud to work with two amazing co-writers, Lewis Manne and Wendy Watson. Songs we have written are playing on radio across the country. Years back, Reuters did a feature story on me entitled “Canadian Lawyer Pens Legal Hurtin Music”. The first line in that article reads, “When he is not working to settle family feuds for his clients, a Canadian lawyer writes songs about them getting airplay from Toronto to San Francisco”. I have had a passion for songwriting since my early teenage years, long before I gave any thought to becoming a lawyer. My late parents, Rose and Jack, inspired me to keep this passion alive and to keep writing. I wrote and I wrote, and when I met Lewis and Wendy, my songwriting life changed. They turned my words into songs that have touched Les Kotzer so many lives. I have written songs in honour of my late mother, my late father, and a song entitled “Crying To The Moon” in memory of my late brother Joel, who I cherished. I am so thrilled that the very talented Alessia De Gasperis of York Region is singing “Crying To The Moon”. The song is playing on the Jewel radio network across Canada (88.5 FM in Toronto). So many people have contacted me to tell me how much they love the song and how much they love Alessia De Gasperis’ performance. It is also being played on Wave FM 94.7. Due to the success of “Crying To The Moon”, Alessia recorded another one of my songs entitled, “Just Say (It’s a Beautiful Day)”. This song was launched on 105.9 The Region. It is now on their regular playlist. You can hear these songs and my other songs on my songwriting website songwritinglawyer.com. You can also hear a songwriter spotlight interview I did with host Rosie Ferguson of 105.9 The Region. I am so proud to announce that an amazing Canadian vocalist and performer, Brian Roman, has recently recorded a song that is very special to my heart entitled, “Photos In A Drawer”. The song pays tribute to my late mother Rose, who always felt that her greatest treasures were in the faces of her family. After she passed away, I was walking through her room and came across a drawer filled with photos of my childhood, seeing family and friends frozen in time as they were so many years ago. I had to write a song based on those photos from the past. Brian Roman has a very interesting life story. At the age of 42 and a father of four, he made the life altering decision to pursue his dream. He left a career in the life insurance business after 20 years. In April of 2006, he staged a career launching concert at Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall. He had booked the hall on his own and then worked diligently to sell tickets. He was an unlikely candidate because he says he did not play any instruments, had never been in a band, not even part time, he could not read music and had no idea what key he sang in. Hard work and determination paid off. The show was a sold out success, and the story was featured on radio stations, in magazines, on television and was the feature story the following morning on the front page of a major Toronto newspaper. Over the next 11 years, Brian toured across Canada and the United States. He said he has shared stages with the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, The Nylons, Rita MacNeil and Jose Feliciano. After spending many months at a time on the road, playing to sold out crowds and seeing his name in lights on the same marquees as major celebrities and well known artists, I think it can be said that Brian is truly living his dream. While touring the U.S., Brian discovered that theatres were struggling to appeal to a younger demographic. He felt there was a need for a show that would reach many age groups. He felt his group Roc Opra Natra was the answer. This group brings together the three dynamic voices of Christopher Dallo, Danny Scott and Brian Roman. These performers weave a tapestry of melodies from Sinatra to Rod Stewart to Josh Groban to Bocelli. On May 30, 2017, they will do a rare Canadian performance at 8:00 p.m. in the Markham Theatre. During the show, Brian will be performing my song “Photos In A Drawer”. If my mom, dad and brother Joel were here, they would be so proud. Brian told me that he and his group are doing the show to help a family they know that is in desperate need of financial help. According to Brian, all players in the show are donating their time to help this family. For more information or to get tickets, you can go to brianroman.com or markham.ca or call 647-227-8101. SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto has made the decision to sell its Thornhill Kamin branch on Atkinson Avenue, in part because of a drop in enrollment. "This decision was made after significant deliberation and with a heavy heart," said Mayeer Pearl, president of the school’s board of directors. An e-mail was sent to parents Thursday morning. The Kamin building was built for 750 children, said Rabbi Mark Smiley, head of school. This schoolyear, 360 students are enrolled. Next year (2017-2018), enrolment is expected to drop to 305, less than half of the students enrolled just five years ago, when the school had 689 students. According to Rabbi Smiley, there is another factor: "There was a systemic shift when the government opened free, fullday kindergarten in York Region public schools." Even though there are a large number of Jewish people in York Region, high cost is not the only deterrent to attending Jewish day school, Rabbi Smiley said. Some Jewish families see French immersion, artbased programs and Russian-language schooling as being important alternatives, he said. Rabbi Smiley also pointed out that York Region has excellent public schools, making these schools an attractive option. But parent Renan Levine still wonders why the change in enrollment has been so precipitous over the last five years in Thornhill? "After all, camps, good public schools, informal Jewish educational opportunities all existed 6 and 10 years ago - and no one thought housing was cheap back then. Housing prices are so high in Toronto, but yet enrollment remains strong at Posluns (Toronto campus). We are scratching our heads. So much is changing so quickly and the long-term implications for our community may be quite substantial". Ilana Zigelman has twin daughters in Grade 5 at the Kamin campus and also attended Associated schools growing up. Like Levine, she is concerned about the decision to sell the Atkinson Avenue building. "We have a lot of history in that building," she said. "I am saddened. My children have spent 10 wonderful years in that building and it’s the only school they’ve ever known. As an Associated alumnus, it is tragic to see that a school

This photo was taken at the school during Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) this year. which was overflowing with students is now in dire straits. Day school is expensive and it’s not everyone’s priority. There are many who wish they could afford to send their children to day school, however the subsidy process is humiliating and because many abuse the system, those who are honest pay the price...literally." The board’s resolution commits the Kamin branch to staying in the Atkinson building for an additional one to two school years, depending on enrolment. A goal has been set of three to four months for the broader community to try and find a sustainable solution to remain in York Region. Remaining in the building and renting from a new owner is one possibility. But, if the school moves locations, it hopes to retain students. "We are hopeful people will be loyal to the brand and our unique commitment to excellence," Rabbi

Smiley said. The school is also hoping donors come forward just as they did for CHAT (Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto) or maybe other donors will see the need to re-invest. Associated’s Kamin branch acquired 1-1/2 million dollars in debt over five years, Rabbi Smiley said. The school says it has been cutting costs over several years. Measures have included a reduction in the number of administrators, streamlining and/or combining specialty programs, and reducing costs within specific departments. A possible move to Associated’s Finch location would provide further savings on such costs as utilities, IT and building maintenance. Rabbi Smiley remains optimistic about the future. "The (Jewish) day school system will survive," Rabbi Smiley said. "It may be a system for the very committed and those that can pay for it."

War Measures Act spurs Quebec independence “Just watch me!” Perhaps the most famous quote ever attributed to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau can be traced to the October Crisis of 1970. It happened when the FLQ (Front de liberation du Quebec) kidnapped British diplomat James Cross and Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte, who was subsequently murdered. Trudeau then invoked the never-beforeimposed War Measures Act, which limited civil liberties. The police arrested and detained 497 people, all but 62 of whom were released without charges. It is believed federal imposition of the War Measures Act helped push support for independence in Quebec.

What does pride mean to you? To me, it’s pride in my sexuality, family and in my community. To someone else, it might be pride in their culture, their gender identity, their disability, or pride in being an ally to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Pride has no single face, no single definition, no single experience and knows no boundaries. Pride can be strong, pride can and is about being authentic, pride can be liberating, pride can be loving yourself and who you see in the mirror, but pride can also be scary. Pride can leave someone who is questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression completely immobilized. It can also be isolating, confusing and frightening for the family, friends
and allies of those whom identify and may be coming out at LGBTQ. Pride is about being able to stand proud in your own community and know that the support, resources and education is available. Pride is about continually building our region into a safe space for the LGBTQ community and beyond, making sure our region reflects and celebrates its diversity and ensuring inclusion for individuals. Someone you know and love is LGBTQ and may not have the courage to stand proud in celebration of their authentic self. With Pride in the 905 right around the corner, there are several opportunities for residents of York Region to celebrate love, diversity, inclusion and basic human rights throughout the month of June. This is an opportunity to show your support for those who need it the most. To kick things off this year, join Pflag - York Re-

Program teaches students about waste reduction ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com A Canadian charity is offering to teach local students how to become "superheroes" of environmental protection. The Planet Protector Academy, in partnership with the city, is running a pilot program geared to students in grades 3 to 5, to teach kids about reducing waste. The program, dubbed Zero Heroes, features in-class activities about waste and consumption issues game shows, writing raps about food scraps, drawing posters and
team math competitions - led by a website projected at the front of the class. Students are then given at-home missions that involve their family to help spread the message. DreamRider Productions developed the program, which is being offered through funding support received from Vaughan’s waste management division. Schools or teachers interested in bringing the program to their classrooms can contact Sion Lanini at sion@dreamriderproductions.com or 604-7573212.

portant contributions Italian-Canadians have made to Canada. It provides a designated month to celebrate the richness of the Italian culture, and our opportunity to educate and reflect upon Italian-Canadian accomplishments and heritage," Schulte said in a news release. "Having the second largest constituency of Italian-Canadians in the country, I was honoured to introduce this initiative," she added. Ontario’s government proclaimed June as Italian Heritage Month in 2010.

June declared National Italian Heritage Month The federal government has officially declared June as National Italian Heritage Month. King-Vaughan MP Deb Schulte spearheaded the drive to annually recognize the contributions Italian-Canadians have made to the country. Last fall, she introduced a private member’s motion to have June declared National Italian Heritage Month. That motion passed in a unanimous vote on May 17, according to a news release. Women’s shelters applaud commissioner’s findings LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com The former Vaughan employee, who complained she was sexually harassed by Vaughan’s disgraced ex-deputy mayor Michael Di Biase, is far from alone, city integrity commissioner Suzanne Craig said. Such conduct is a concern at workplaces far and wide, she said. "As noted by the Honourable Marie Deschamps (former Supreme Court justice) in her external report on sexual harassment in the Canadian Armed Forces, numerous organizations are struggling to address the prevalence of inappropriate sexual conduct," Craig said in her report, saying the time is right to tackle the issue. Craig’s efforts to shed light on the broader problem of sexual harassment in the workplace is being applauded by York Region women’s shelters. "Sexual violence (including harassment) in the
workplace is like any form of violence against women. It’s gender-based violence and women experience it on a daily basis," Lorris Herenda, executive director of Yellow Brick House, said. "When you think of the prevalence of stats, that one in four women experience violence in their lives, you know that it is happening in workplaces as well." Victims, especially single parents, are often reluctant to report workplace sexual harassment for fear of losing their jobs, said Herenda, adding there are also male victims. "It’s putting somebody in a horrifying position," she said. While sexual harassment in the workplace has been an issue for years, more victims are coming forward in light of legislation such as Bill 168, a 2010 amendment to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, aimed at better protecting workers, Herenda said.
Workplaces and society need to put policies and laws in effect that properly support victims in Lorris coming Herenda forward and reporting harassment, Jehan Chaudhry, executive director of Sandgate Women’s Shelter, said. "There is harassment out there, sexual harassment, and everybody needs to find ways to make it easier for people who have experienced that to be able to talk about it and there not be reprisals," she said. Victims often struggle with feeling of fear, anger, denial, frustration, pain and even post-traumatic stress disorder, Chaudhry said. She applauded York Regional Police, which works with Sandgate to address issues such as sexual harassment.

ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Vaughan Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase is entitled to collect thousands of dollars in severance pay despite abruptly resigning last week after the integrity commissioner’s finding he sexually harassed a city employee. The revelation came May 23 during a special council meeting held to address Integrity Commissioner Suzanne Craig’s damning 28-page report released May 18. Claudia Storto, deputy city manager of legal and human resources, confirmed Di Biase, who served on council for nearly 30 years, is eligible for a payout. But it’s unclear how much money he can collect. The city’s policy states any councillor who resigns for any reason, other than removal by the “operation of law,” is entitled to one month’s salary for each consecutive year of service, up to a maximum of 24 months. The city hasn’t disclosed the exact amount Di Biase is eligible to receive. Last year, his base salary was about $85,600, ac-
cording to a report on the city’s website. If he’s paid out at that rate for his last 6-1/2 years of consecutive service, he’d get more than $45,000. The Region of York, where Di Biase also sat, has also confirmed he’s entitled to $30,440 in severance, bringing his total payout to more than $75,000. A councillor can decline severance under the city’s policy. Di Biase wasn’t at Tuesday’s meeting and neither he nor his lawyer could be reached for comment about whether he’ll accept or decline severance pay. He has repeatedly denied the allegations against him and they haven’t been tested in court. Based on her findings, Craig concluded Di Biase’s actions “constitute sexual harassment and a breach of Rule 14 of the Code (of Ethical Conduct), which prohibits such harassment.” Councillors voted Tuesday to receive the integrity commissioner’s report and accept her finding Di Biase breached the city’s code of ethics. Lake Wilcox snags 3 medals at Ontario brewing contest ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Lake Wilcox Brewing Company has announced its arrival on the craft beer scene -- with authority. The fledgling Vaughan brewery snapped up three medals at the 2017 Ontario Brewing Awards held in Toronto April 27. Leading the pack at the awards for Lake Wilcox was its Dunkel Weiss, produced in small-batches and sold exclusively through the brewery, which grabbed a gold medal in the Dunkelweizen category. "We knew it was topnotch," said Dave De Ciantis, who co-founded the brewery with his longtime friend and fellow Oak Ridges resident, Ray Nicolini. "We had people come by and sample it, they were beer judges from different communities, and they said, ’Wow, you guys have got something pretty special here.’"
Steve Somerville/Metroland
Ray Nicolini and David De Ciantis inside their new Lake Wilcox Brewery. The Dunkel was one of 11 beers Lake Wilcox submitted to the annual competition, which featured more than 120 breweries competing in 48 categories. Two of Lake Wilcox’s mainstay brews also grabbed awards. The Black Hops IPA,
Belgian-style IPA with a 5.5 per cent alcohol content, snagged a silver medal in the Dark IPA category while the firm’s inaugural brew, Mad Quacker, captured a bronze in the Amber Lager slot. Both brews are available at The Beer Store, while Mad Quacker
can also be purchased through the LCBO. "At least two of our four core beers got an award, which is nice," Nicolini said. "(And the Amber Lager is) a tough category, you’re competing with Creemore Springs and Mill Street’s 100th Meridian. There’s a lot
of big beers in that category," De Ciantis added. Despite the accolades, they’re not resting on their laurels. De Ciantis said they’re looking forward to getting the judges’ score sheets to see how their other entries fared and get more feedback on their winners. "We could have been number four in five of the other categories, which means we know what to do to make improvements," he said. "We’re always looking at constantly improving here, what can we do better? Bronzes can become golds, silvers can become golds, that’s our philosophy here." De Ciantis and Nicolini dove into the blossoming small-batch brewing scene back in 2014 with Mad Quacker, an amber hued Vienna lager with a 4.7 per cent alcohol content, which they contract brewed at the time. Then, last fall they,
opened the doors to their own brewery, at 1033 Edgeley Blvd., near Vaughan Mills mall. It boasts a 2,000-squarefoot retail space and a sleek, modern taproom with an open view into the production area - where you can quaff five-ounce and 12-ounce samples of anywhere from eight to 12 beers while watching the brewers at work. The 6,500-square-foot production area features a 2,000-litre brew house with seasonal offerings being brewed on a pilot system. They’re currently working on offering a limited menu that could include artisan sandwiches and charcuterie, hopefully by August or September. "There’s going to be a little bit more beer and food pairings so if someone comes in, and they’re a little bit hungry, they can have something to eat with a beer tasting," De Ciantis said. "So that’s pretty exciting."

Home improvement app creator lands spot on ’Dragons’ Den’ ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Does the thought of trying to find a reputable handyman to renovate your outdated bathroom or build you a new deck fill you with dread? Ross DiStefano knows that feeling. He went through something similar and thought there must be a better way. The experience spurred the Vaughan resident to develop a smartphone app dubbed Quote This Project. Launched in the GTA two months ago, it boasts thousands of active users and has 270 tradespeople signed up to tackle projects ranging from kitchen and bathroom renovations to lawn mowing and roof repair, among many others. "It’s a very simple idea and we’re going to take it and revolutionize the way people are getting projects done in their homes today," DiStefano, 43, said. How simple is it?
Steve Somerville/Metroland
Ross DiStefano has developed a new app that connects homeowners with renovators who bid or quote them on projects. Step 1: Download the free app and complete your profile. Step 2: Post an image and a description of your project. Step 3: Wait for quotes to roll in from tradespeople.
Step 4: Sort through the contractors’ bids and invite the ones you feel can meet your budget and timeline to meet with you. The tradespeople bidding on your project pay $19.99 monthly to gain ac-
cess to customer postings. "On the tradesperson’s side, he no longer has to waste his time going around quoting everything that has a pulse," said DiStefano, who moved into the tech field about six years ago af-
ter many years as a landscaper. DiStefano came up with the idea after struggling to find someone to install patio stones in his yard. He and friend Tony Bonnelo were halfway through the installation when DiStefano had to leave town for work. His wife, Margaret, suggested putting out a call on Facebook for someone to finish the job. A few responses trickled in, but no one could meet his timeline. "Tony said, ’Why don’t you create an app to automate the process so it goes to those who can meet the timeline and (the app) was born,’" DiStefano recalled. He developed Quote This Project with business partner Dmitri Li of Thornhill. The pair previously created a geolocation app to connect trade show exhibitors with attendees. Quote This Project has taken off and is now available in Canada, the U.S., UK, Australia and it will soon be
in France. It has also caught the attention of the folks at CBC’s Dragons’ Den. DiStefano and Li auditioned for a spot and were among roughly 150 entrepreneurs, out of about 3,500, chosen to appear on Season 12, airing this fall, he said. "When we were giving our first pitch at our audition, the producer said, ’Where have you been all my life.’ They downloaded it right in front of us and posted a project," DiStefano recalled. He’s sworn to secrecy about what happened on their episode, but says it was "a great learning process on how to speak to venture capitalists." Their focus now is on expanding where the app is available. "In the end, we want this to be the standard practice for any homeowner getting their projects completed."
