hen Robert Phillips got into his car one Tuesday last May he felt fine. Within a few hours, though, he’d come close to falling asleep at the wheel as he swerved into oncoming traffic and forced transport

trucks onto the highway’s shoulder, said Crown attorney Ted Carlton in a Muskoka courthouse Dec. 22, 2015. Police eventually stopped the Parry Sound resident in Bracebridge. “The officer found Mr. Phillips had no odour of alcohol on his breath, but a slight slur in his speech,” said Carlton. “He stated

he’d taken his medications that morning and simply felt tired.” Later that day, May 6, 2015, a urine test revealed Phillips, then 43, had a number of drugs in his system, including oxycodone — an opioid pain medication. His family doctor had prescribed the drug cocktail after Phillips suffered four concussions in five years, said defence lawyer Peter Ward.

Neville-Lake family members honoured at park celebration BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Gary Neville-Lake along with his grandchildren, Harry, 5, Daniel, 9, and Milly, 2, were killed last September when the vehicle in which they were travelling was struck by another vehicle, driven by impaired driver Marco Muzzo. But their memories will live on. As a means of remembering and celebrating their lives, people from all over southern Ontario converged at Wellesley Park in King City on Sunday for the NevilleLake Family Memorial Day. Four trees were planted and plaques placed on benches bearing each of their names at nearby Kettle Lake Park. In anticipation that a large gathering attending the festivities, the event was moved to Wellesley Park. “The main focus is to honour the kids and to remember them and to support the family and to do something nice for the community,” said Jennifer Waxman-Stallman, who organized the special day. Waxman-Stallman said a little over two years ago, she started a Facebook group and blog known as Entertain Kids on a Dime. She had some 60,000 members, one of whom was Jennifer Neville-Lake, mother of Harry, Daniel and Milly. When the incident occurred, WaxmanStallman immediately reached out to the family.

She also raised funds for the memorial plaques and benches and the four trees were donated by Greenside Gardens N More. As well, the Township of King donated the blown-up photographs and helped cover the cost of labour for the tree planting. During the festivities, a number of youthrelated activities took place and donations were accepted on behalf of the Neville-Lake family. Youngsters had the chance to get their hair coloured to one of four available colours based on the month each of the Neville-Lake family members that passed away was born. For those who came to the inaugural event, it was a means of showing their love and affection for the Neville-Lake family in a time of need. “I just feel sad,” said Maple resident Georgia Catsoulis, who came with her son, Gabriel. “I just wanted to come out to support the family.”

‘be supportive’ “We want to be supportive because we have young kids of our own,” added Peter Budziak of Maple. “We can’t imagine what they’ve gone through and we want to support them and the community and with our daughter (Delfina) going through a serious health care issue (a liver transplant), we want to lend our support.” King City resident Nadia Pascuzzo felt

the impact of the incident was one that will last a long time. “Usually stories last a day, but we think of them (Neville-Lake family) every single day. This is forever. What happened to them will have a lasting effect,” she said. Highlighting the festival was the release of four white doves, with youngsters in attendance having the honour of holding them before they were released. With Waxman-Stallman relaying a message from Jennifer Neville-Lake, who was unable to attend, she thanked those who came out for the festival along with the number of people who lent their support and volunteered their time.

“From the bottom of our hearts we want to thank you for the love and support for our family,” she said. “It means so much… thanks for remembering my father and my children.” Waxman-Stallman also said a few words and wanted to make sure an incident that took the lives of the four members of the Neville-Lake family does not happen again. “This tragedy could have been prevented. It’s important to teach youngsters the dangers of drinking and driving,” she said. Reflecting on the day’s festivities, she said: “I think it went really well and it was nice to see lots of families that came out. ... This is a memorial and a celebration.”

METROLAND IMPACT SERIES

Impaired driving: the grey area of pharmaceuticals From page 1.

“I had just started a new blood pressure pill and I think that’s why this happened,” Phillips told the court. At the time of the incident, he had no criminal record and a very small number of Highway Traffic Act infractions. “It scared me as much as anyone else.” Phillips was sentenced to 12 months probation, a $750 fine and a 45-day licence suspension. He did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Cases like Phillips’ are becoming more common across Ontario. Impaired driving by drugs happens almost as frequently as impaired driving by alcohol, said OPP Sgt. Dave Wallbank of the Highway Safety Division. Marijuana is the leading drug of choice, followed closely by pharmaceuticals, he said. The OPP is currently not tracking the number of pharmaceutical-related cases, but it’s “not rare for traffic officers to encounter drugs from the prescription world,” said Wallbank. Prescribed opioids such as oxycodone (as Phillips was taking), sedatives like Valium and even stimulants like Ritalin can impact a person’s ability to drive, according to the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. Research shows opioids and sedatives can cause drowsiness, impair co-ordination, reduce ability to multitask and increase

errors. “Studies of traffic crashes reveal that drivers who test positive for the use of sedatives are two to eight times more likely than alcohol-free and drug-free drivers to be involved in a fatal traffic crash,” said the CCSA’s report. That statistic applies to opioid use as well “The driving behaviour of someone who has used opioids might include noticeably slower driving, weaving, poor vehicle control and delayed reactions,” the report notes. Stimulants can initially reduce feelings of tiredness, but once the effects wear off drivers might experience intensified fatigue, depression and inattention. “Among drivers stopped by the police, who were subsequently found to have been using stimulants, inattention, speeding, risktaking, poor impulse control and aggressive driving are common,” said the report. When Phillips’ doctor slightly altered his medications, Phillips told court he had no idea it would impact his driving ability so profoundly. But it did and he was held responsible. “He was aware the impact his medication was having on him, but he continued to drive and didn’t have reasonable consideration of others using the roadway,” Carlton said in court. When doctors prescribe medications, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario requires them to advise their patients about the risks and benefits, said

spokesperson Tracey Sobers. This includes drug affects and interactions, side effects, precautions and instances when the drugs should not be taken. Pharmacists also have a responsibility. “It’s absolutely the job of the pharmacist to inform patients of medication risks and if those risks are aggravated because of other medications,” said spokesperson Lori DeCou on behalf of the Ontario College of Pharmacists. “Having said that, patients have a role to play, as well, in staying informed,” she said. Canadian pharmacists are required under their standards of practice to review each prescription a patient takes to ensure it is the most appropriate and there are no signifi-

cant interactions with other medications. If a patient is at risk of experiencing problems, the pharmacist is to go through a review process to educate the patient, make changes to therapies, or recommend changes to the patient’s doctor, according to the standards of practice document. When it comes to warning labels, that’s not up to pharmacists, but rather Health Canada and the drug manufacturer, said DeCou. Some prescribed medications, including a handful used to treat anxiety, depression and insomnia, have warning labels, such as, “may cause drowsiness,” “do not operate heavy machinery,” or “do not drive,” reports the Ministry of Transportation. Over-thecounter drugs such as Benadryl and Claritin come with similar warnings. Depending on a patient’s health conditions, age and countless other factors, medications without explicit warning labels can also impact driving ability, according to the Canadian Safety Council. Older drivers, for example, are likely to experience drowsiness, blurred vision and dizziness from pain relievers, cough suppressants and blood pressure drugs. “People should be concerned about any drugs that impact their ability to divide attention,” said Wallbank. “If they think there’s any potential, then they should not be driving.” EW

“The word is getting out to our families within, that it is a pleasant visit to come to our party room and get food donations on Thursdays,” McBratney said. McBratney and wife, Erin, began discussing how some of the families needing the donated food have children who need school supplies and decided to host a back-to-school donation drive, as well. He has lived at the co-op for 17 years, while Erin has lived there for 25. They are hoping the feeling of community togetherness will bring more people out to community events. “The whole thing will be positive and it is turning everything around. We are people who care about our community,” McBratney said. McBratney did not expect the first drive Aug. 4 to affect him, but it did. “This broke my heart. It really hit home with me and I will never forget that day for the rest of my life,” he said. As a result, he and Erin decided

Craig McBratney wants everyone to know his community is joining together for a good cause — to provide food and school supplies to needy residents of his Thornhill co-op. McBratney is a resident at William Lyon Mackenzie Co-operative Housing in Vaughan, near Steeles Avenue and Bathurst Street. “This is bringing a lot of people together,” he said Monday. The food share depends solely on donated food and household consumables. A food drive started up Aug. 4 to help 12 families, McBratney said. Five more joined the food drive last week. The food share is available to all 152 houses in the co-op. Food is dropped off every Thursday. “We are going to do this until everyone has food on their table,” McBratney said in an e-mail.

to extend the program and figure out a way to get new knapsacks, pens, binders etc., for the children of the registered families in the food share. They said a Vaughan city manager has promised to help by donating City of Vaughan binders and water bottles. After decades of receiving federal funding to help pay its mortgage, the co-op’s operating agreement with the federal government ends in 2019. Anticipating this, the co-op came under scrutiny after it began a clawback of subsidized rent, a move that divided residents. The co-op still needs what McBratney calls luxury items such as baseball hats and other school supplies ranging from calculators to coloured pencils. To donate, call McBratney at 637388-0434. The co-op will collect school supplies until Sept. 15. Food donations do not have a deadline. Kosher food is also needed.

Call out superficial remarks about women athletes

Close calls increasing at intersection

U

ntil Markham phenomenon Andre De Grasse ran into our TV screens and onto the Olympic podium alongside the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, all the medals won by Canadians were earned by women. Over and over again, sportscasters — usually male — referred with admiration, but some amazement, to the fact that all the medal winners until Sunday night’s marquee 100-meter event were female. It made me think of a media campaign, which started in Toronto, New York City and Los Angeles just before the Olympic Games began, to “call out” or shine an unfavourable spotlight on media commentary that judges female athletes on their appearance, rather than on their skills. A Dove #MyBeautyMySay campaign holds the premise that all too often, female athletes are featured in sports magazines and news stories in passive poses, glamourized and sexualized, while male athletes are portrayed in action-oriented ways emphasizing their skills. It further hypothesizes that too often media commentators focus on the looks of female athletes and on appearance rather than achievements. An interactive billboard campaign launched July 26 at YongeDundas Square in Toronto, along with other key U.S. cities, asking people to “call out” or aim negative Tweets at media outlets or commentators which belittle women athletes. Campaign organizers do credit Canadian media with being far more positive in their views and commentary on women athletes, but said such is not always the case with other media globally. As part of their rationale for the campaign, Dove and Unilever pointed out that eight in 10 (81 per cent) of Canadian women wish the media did a better job of portraying women with diverse physical appearance, and of varying ages, races, shapes and sizes. But then came the Olympic

Marney Beck Games in Rio. And onto the world stage burst a group of talented, courageous and skilled athletes — swimmers, such as triple-threat Penny Oleksiak and synchro duo Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion, rowers Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, our bronze team of women pursuit cyclists, the entire women’s rugby team and — of course — our own golden trampolinist Rosie MacLennan. Who would dare write, or Tweet or Facebook about these medalwinning athletes by focusing only on their appearance, their makeup, or their clothing? Sadly, sometimes media representatives in their articles and more often their readers in social media posts do consider appearance or clothing or other superficial factors. We all know that online commentators, especially, can be cruel and cutting — even vicious. Tessa Virtue, Canadian ice dancing champion, is part of the #MyBeautyMySay campaign. She admits that she’s been the target of mean-spirited comments calling out for her to “be thinner” or “don’t eat” to be the best she can be in a sport that combines artistry with athletic skills. “Let’s face it, all women are judged too often on their looks instead of their accomplishments,” states Virtue. So while it’s hard to imagine that any online discussion about our medal-winning athletes would focus on their physical attributes, their swimsuits, hair or overall looks, if you see any derogatory comments aimed at our women Olympians, you’re invited to call them out at #MyBeautyMySay.

I have been a proud Thornhill resident since 2002, who has always prided myself in being involved in my kids’ schools and local events. This year I have almost been hit by a car about five times while crossing a Thornhill street — in each case in broad daylight. It has been at the major intersection of Don Mills and Simonston Blvd., where it has been the pedestrian’s right of way. Now I am very hesitant and I make eye contact before crossing. During school time, I try to use the crossing guards and I tell them if ever their positions get eliminated, I will be the first to fight for them. Yesterday was the last straw, I was crossing at a fourway stop sign at Simonston Blvd and Waggoner’s Wells at 6:10 p.m. It was broad daylight, I stopped and a couple of cars just went through, then finally the car that had the right of way, stopped, I waved and started crossing. Suddenly the car making the left turn (which did not have right of way and had come to a stop before I started crossing) started approaching me. I screamed STOP. It had tinted windows, a white sedan. It picked up speed. I had to make a jump and a dash to save my life. It carried on and I didn’t get the licence plate. The driver of the car that had right of way threw her hands up in disbelief, too. In 2014 I survived breast cancer and have just gone back to work full time. I work as a nurse, and am used to work in ICU and ER, so I have seen my share of people getting disabled by accidents. I am getting scared to cross the road without another person there. I said to my husband, if cancer didn’t kill me, these drivers are going to kill or maim me. I have also seen two other people escape being hit by

a vehicle at Don Mills and Simonston Blvd. I am not sure what can be done to decrease the near misses and make drivers more responsible. I am sure other Thornhill residents are feeling the same, and when winter approaches, the days will be getting shorter and the risk higher. I really feel pedestrian safety is highly compromised and something should be done.

Candidate quota system won’t work Re: What about gender parity on local councils? column by Marney Beck, July 21. I am shocked by this column. To imply there should be gender parity is offensive against the basic principles of democracy. It could even be somewhat treasonous. Why would anyone want to limit smart women to only 50 per cent of the successful candidates? And how would one do it in a local environment where individuals compete? Maybe women are better some years than others, and maybe men are better other elections? But really, it is discriminatory. Anyone who votes on gender, cultural, racial, physi-

cal or religious aspects of candidates needs to learn what our democracy is all about. We need the best people for the job and it is up to the electorate to educate themselves before voting on each candidate. The quota system does not work. It brings in too many incompetent people, and people not really willing to work hard. This has been realized in some companies of the business sector, but through laws or other encouragements they were forced to hire [using quotas]. I believe the next provincial and federal elections if the riding organizations decide or are told to select one gender only — considering we now have many genders via the LBGT gains — and include representation of short or tall people, dark or light people, people of each race, culture, nationality etc, the complexities would be ridiculous. We have entered absurd times and it is time to go back to fundamentals and have everyone buy in, blend in and so forth.

The 2017 Mazda3 will come standard with G-Vectoring Control.

2017 Mazda3 fitted with GVectoring Control Mazda has announced the 2017 Mazda3 with notable improvements in refinement, packaging and handling. The 2017 Mazda3’s exterior tweaks are subtle, but effectively elevate the vehicle’s KODO—Soul of Motion design, adding a bolder grille, available LED headlights and tail lights, and a redesigned rear bumper on five-door models that extends an upscale, monochromatic look to the lower valences. The new Mazda3 will come standard with G-Vectoring Control (GVC), an allnew, Mazda-exclusive technology that uses the engine in conjunction with the steering, throttle inputs and suspension to provide sharper chassis control, leading to a need for fewer steering corrections and greater driver- and passengerconfidence. Much as Mazda3’s already engaging steering has improved with GVC, Mazda’s engineers have upped the ante with improved NVH damping, too. The 2017 Mazda3 is a substantial 3dB quieter going 40 km/h over rough roads, thanks to tighter body gaps, improved sound insulation and redesigned weather stripping versus its 2016 predecessor. With the 2017 updates also comes the adoption of available Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring and Traffic Sign Recognition as well as a new, full-colour Active Driving Display. These safety features complement Mazda3’s i-Activsense suite, which includes Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support and Smart Brake Support for highway speeds. The 2017 Mazda3 arrives in dealers in September, with pricing and packing to be announced closer to its on-sale date.

‘Free’ piano lands on Markham front lawn BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

One neighbour’s trash is another’s nightmare. That’s what happened to one Markham family when a piano crash landed onto the Sum’s front lawn. While out for a walk with her family, Fedilia Sum noticed an upright piano some houses down, left at the curb with a ‘free’ sign taped to it. “It was nice looking,” said she. “It was a good piano.” A little later, someone tried to push the piano along the sidewalk, one of the wheels cracked and the piano smashed onto the Sum’s front lawn. “Now, it is just a piece of crap,” she said. “These people did not use their brain.” Not knowing what do to, the mother of three called the city and police. “I don’t want to see anybody get hurt,” Sum said. “I wanted to let them know it was not our piano.” She was told the city’s garbage collection crew would try to take it if the piano could be lifted safely, but would have to wait until the next regularly scheduled collection day. For professional piano mover Jason Martin, it’s no surprise the wheels broke and the piano was left on the front lawn for about two weeks. Martin is the owner of one of the GTA’s top piano moving companies, Braymore Piano

Movers, Crane Service & Storage. Piano wheels are not designed to bear the weight of moving a piano, Martin said. “I’ve seen wheels break rolling over a crack in the floor in a warehouse,” Martin said. “Someone saw a free piano, thought their kids could use it and was dumb enough to take it without having the right equipment.” To move a standard upright piano costs, on average, $250 depending on how far it has to be moved, plus an additional charge for any steps or stairs, plus a disposal fee. Without professional equipment or knowhow, a ‘free’ piano can get damaged, costing more to repair it than to move it. As luck would have it, someone with a set of pulleys and chains, a dolly and a trailer came and took the piano off the Sum lawn.

Often touted as Canada’s band, the Tragically Hip will take the stage one last time. The last stop on their farewell tour will be in Kingston, Ont., and the CBC will broadcast the last live performance Aug. 20 starting at 8:30 p.m. With 14 albums and Junos to match, for an entire generation The Hip was part of the soundtrack of life:

1

THE LAST GOAL HE EVER SCORED: Here are some places where you can watch the Tragically Hip: A National Celebration in York Region: The ROC and GEM Theatre in Georgina, Town Park in Aurora, Riverwalk Commons, Newmarket, The Duchess of Markham in Markham, Cosmo Music and Rainbow Cinemas in Richmond Hill, The Lion of Stouffville and the Civic Centre Resource Library in Vaughan.

3

THE LESS YOU NEED TO KNOW: If staying home to watch the CBC’s presentation of the Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, be sure to serve up some Hip inspired dishes paired with a Fully Completely red or Ahead By a Century white wine. Serve up orzo with mushrooms, onions and Italian sausage – a favourite of brand frontman Gord Downie. Together with Stoney Ridge Estate Winery, the band co-created Fully Completely, a grand reserve 2013 vintage red featuring a replica of the famed album cover as the bottle label. QUICKLY, SOMETHING FAMILIAR: Band frontman Gord Downie played goal for the Amherstview major bantam team. In the provincial championship game, Amherstview was up 5-0 going into the third period. Downie — whose family was at the game — let in six goals in less than 10 minutes. After being pulled from net, the team went on to win the championship 7-6. Downie didn’t play goal again until he was in his 30s.

THIS IS OUR LIFE: In 2007, The Tragically Hip played 104 shows while on tour, the most in any one year. That year, the band played 60 shows in the U.S., 36 in Canada and shows in Belgium and the Cayman Islands. The band has played New Orleans is Sinking more than 760 times live since the song came out in the late 1980s, At the Hundredth Meridian 718 times since 1991, Courage (for Hugh MacLennan) 605 times since 1992 and Fifty Mission Cap 195 times since 1991. —Sources: Setlist.fm, CBC.ca, TSN.ca, mcleans.ca, thehip.com, hipmuseum.com.

Canada’s first indoor snowboarding centre slides into Vaughan BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Alex Ching, Simon Chang and Adam Zigomanis love to go snowboarding. But when Old Man Winter makes his annual exit and with it, any remnants of snow melt away, that normally means it’s time to put the boards away until next winter. However, the three 32-year-old snowboarding enthusiasts and entrepreneurs came up with an idea to maintain their love of the sport during the offseason. The trio is bringing the sport indoors. They will be doing it on manmade inclines covered by a custom

ordered astroturf surface similar to a soft plastic grass in an indoor snowboarding facility in Vaughan known as Axis Freestyle Academy. The facility is billed as a “yearround indoor dryslope+trampoline ski & snowboard training park to perfect your skills safely”. Located at 356 Four Valley Dr., the academy is housed in a 20,000sq.-ft. facility. While it might appear their facility caters to the avid snowboarder, that’s not the case, Ching said. They want to encourage beginners with the hope it will translate into more participants taking to the slopes in winter. “We will be fully equipped for beginners to advanced athletes,”

he said. “Our goal is to be a place of learning and skills development.” Noting their training facility is the first of its kind in Canada, Ching said their indoor recreational place is the result of exhaustive research on similar facilities in other countries. “We did countless hours of research and based our plans from existing facilities around the world. Mainly in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States,” Ching said. The facility will be equipped with custom high performance trampolines, a variety of jumps and rails, foam pits, a gym and multipurpose/yoga studio. Feeling such a facility would

work in Canada, the trio elected to locate in Vaughan. Choosing York Region was largely derived from studying demographics. With their facility undergoing development over the last three years, Ching estimated they have invested more than $500,000 to get where they are now. “We really don’t come from wealthy backgrounds, so it’s been lots of hard work and sacrifice to get where we are now,” he said. Once their facility is open for business, which they hope will be before the end of this month, Ching said they intend to have their doors open for snowboarders from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day.

“The morning and early afternoons will be for private bookings, camps, parent and toddler time,” he said. They are making plans to conduct after-school programs and drop-in sessions for the remainder of the evenings. On weekends, they hope to host events for the community. “We have plans to offer classes for all levels of riding and teach the fundamentals of progression,” he said. Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

EW

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.

Sears Hearing Centre is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing evaluation and a no obligation trial of the Audéo V hearing aids by calling 1-888-771-7459.

SJOERD WITTEVEEN FILE PHOTO

Like a good number of Canadians, Liana Williams, Deanna Heron and Anton Skerritt were glued to their TV sets watching the 2016 Summer Olympics when the men’s 100-metre final featuring 21-year-old Markham resident Andre De Grasse and twotime defending gold medallist Usain Bolt of Jamaica took place in Rio de Janeiro Sunday evening. For Williams, Heron and Skerritt, the big race had some added significance from a personal perspective. Being longtime teachers and track and field coaches at Milliken Mills High School, Williams and Skerritt had the good fortune of mentoring De Grasse on the school’s track and field team when he first took up the sport as a Grade 11 student and through his Grade 12 year. Heron was a vice-principal at Milliken Mills during the days De Grasse was enrolled there. While De Grasse ran his way to bronze with a personal best time of 9.91 seconds to become the first male athlete for Canada to reach the medal podium at the 2016 Summer Games, Williams, Heron and Skerritt could not have been happier with what their former pupil had accomplished in his Olympic debut that saw Bolt claim his third straight 100m Olympic gold. “It was great, it was exciting,” said Williams, who watched the race with her parents. “It was amazing and just incredible to see him do so well.” A former 400m and 4 x 400m runner for Canada at the 1988 Olympics, Skerrett was equally elated. “It was fantastic. You know what? I was excited for him and his mom (Beverly). She’s worked a lot with him and I’m really happy for him.” “Like Liana, I’m still giddy from Sunday’s excitement,” added Heron. “I sent Liana congratulatory messages after the race, as I did last year after Andre’s phenomenal races at the Pan American Games and when Liana sent me a photo and article featuring Andre’s breakout 100m and 200m NCAA performances.” What caught Heron’s attention once the race concluded was seeing Bolt praise De Grasse and hint he could be heir to the throne in the 100m once he hangs up his spikes. “It made me think back to my very first meeting with Andre and

his family when I was at Milliken Mills when he wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to study but was open to suggestions. “We (educators) can never know the full magnitude of greatness that lies within our students; it is our privilege to get to support and bear witness to their resilience,” she said. Acknowledging her heart rate spiked in the moments leading up to and during the final race, Williams could not help but to reflect on how De Grasse, a former Markham Economist and Sun newspaper carrier during his younger days, has progressed so rapidly in a sport he literally took up just four years ago. Recalling De Grasse did not have the proper track apparel when he first took up the sport and donned basketball shoes and shorts as that sport was his first love, Williams said they took De Grasse to the Running Free retail outlet in Markham and within 15 minutes, purchased proper track spikes and shorts for him. “It’s really hard to believe how he’s progressed so quickly and he still has so much room to grow yet,” she said. Like Williams, Skerrett said he felt the butterflies, almost similar to when he competed for Canada, as De Grasse was ready to embark on his 100m final run. “He’s one of us,” Skerrett proudly said in noting De Grasse is part of the Milliken Mills High School’s extended family. “It’s not like he’s my son, but it feels like he’s my nephew. His mom is from Trinidad and Tobago like me and I got to know him and his mom well. “I’ve been in contact with him since his junior college days (at Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas) and told him to keep up the good work. It’s nice to see how he’s progressed,” Skerrett said. “What he’s done in such a short time is nothing short of amazing.” While Williams and Skerritt were quick to concede much of De Grasse’s success stems from his natural ability, they added he possesses other vital ingredients that have led to what success he’s had thus far in the sport. Skerrett feels a big part of that is his passion for whatever he does. Almost similar to what he possessed when basketball was his

favourite sport that he then transferred into track and field once he saw where it could get him in terms of a college scholarship and beyond.

“He was a basketball player who is now one of the top-ranked sprinters in the world. It’s unbelievable,” Skerrett said. “He believes in himself, trusts

York police issue warning to sex trade workers following disappearance of Markham woman York Regional Police have issued a warning to sex trade workers in connection with the disappearance and suspected death of a Markham woman. Homicide investigators are searching

for 21-year-old Jiarui (Jerry) Tang, who is wanted on a Canadawide warrant for manslaughter in the disappearance of 36-yearold Markham woman Annie Li. “Investigators believe that Mr. Tang has recently attempted to seek the services of women working in the sex trade,” police said. “Police believe that he poses a significant threat to these women and we are warning

anyone who encounters him in person or online to use caution and contact police immediately.” Li was last seen by her family on June 12 in the area of Denison Street and Markham Road. “As a result of the investigation, police have reason to believe that Annie Li is deceased,” police said. Police, who issued as arrest warrant for Tang on Aug. 2, said he frequents Toronto’s Chinatown area and is believed to still be in the area. Investigators are urging Tang to consult with a lawyer and turn himself in immediately. If you see the suspect, police advice you not to approach him. Instead, call 911. “Anyone who aids or assists this suspect in escaping or evading police may be subject to a criminal charge of accessory after the fact,” police said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the homicide unit at 1-866876-5423 ext. 7865, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com. — Lisa Queen

York police charge Milton man in relation to $2M Ponzi scheme A 68-year-old Milton man has been charged in relation to a Ponzi scheme that affected victims throughout the Greater Toronto Area, including York Region. Aug. 10, York Regional Police criminal investigators and members of the major fraud unit arrested the man in connection with a $2 million investment fraud. Officers began investigating in April 2015. Between 2002 and 2014, the accused acted as a financial advisor and ran a mortgage-based investment scheme. More than 20 victims — from York, Peel and Halton regions, Toronto and Wellington County — have been identified. They were convinced to invest large amounts of money with the accused and were advised that they would be receiving income from those investments. The accused, Gerrard Mok, was arrested at his home in Milton with the assistance of Halton Regional Police. He was charged with defrauding the public. — Chris Simon

A $2.5-million investment by the federal and provincial governments is helping to sprout 50 food and agricultural-related projects in York Region. The funding, through a program called Growing Forward 2, is aimed at improving innovation, competitiveness and market development in Canada’s agri-food and agri-products sector. The riding of Thornhill will receive the bulk of the funding, at more than $1.4 million. York-Simcoe is receiving $484,335, Richmond Hill is getting $252,746 and Oak Ridges-Markham’s share will be $132,640. Meanwhile, the Newmarket-Aurora riding is receiving $117,915, Vaughan is getting $79,219 and MarkhamUnionville’s share is $77,064. York’s MPPs praised the investment. “By making strategic investments in food and beverage processing companies in our local communities, we are strengthening our agri-food sector, creating jobs in our communities and growing Ontario’s economy all at once,” Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek said in a statement. The funding will boost market opportunities in York Region, Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi said. The funding will add jobs and boost a growing industry, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard added. Launched in 2013, the program has seen the federal and provincial governments invest more than $44 million in almost 850 projects across Canada. — Lisa Queen

Funding grows York’s agricultural sector

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology is totally invisible when worn. It offers retirees the opportunity to defy hearing loss by compensating for your individual hearing loss in all situations, day and night. Nobody can see it because it fits snugly and comfortably in your ear canal and uses the ear’s natural acoustics for natural sound quality. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about so there’s no need to keep fiddling and adjusting settings. You can start enjoying life again as you concentrate on hearing, rather than thinking about your hearing aid.

These latest digital hearing aids continuously analyze incoming sounds and adapt to each individual situation, so you always get the best hearing possible. Even in background noise. When speech and conversation sounds are detected, the sound is automatically increased at different frequencies so you can hear and understand it clearly, not just loudly. You get all the benefits you want in a digital hearing aid without the obvious sign that you are wearing one because it’s completely invisible in most ears. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

A man has been charged in connection with a two-vehicle crash that took the life of a 23-year-old woman early Sunday morning on Steeles Avenue. The crash took place at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 14 on Steeles, east of Reesor Road, on the border between Scar-

borough and Markham. Toronto police are investigating the crash, and said Sunday afternoon that a man would be facing charges as a result of the crash, but had yet to release details of what those charges would be. Police said a car and pick-up truck collided in the incident along what is a one-lane stretch of Steeles Avenue. The woman who died was in the car, but police did not say

23 23 whether she was the driver or a passenger. Two other people suffered minor injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital. The man charged was driving the truck, police said. Steeles Avenue was closed for a significant portion of Sunday morning for the investigation. Anyone with information on the crash can contact Toronto police traffic services at 416-808-1900.
