Student immunization rate jumps from 34 to 99 % BY LISA QUEEN

lqueen@yrmg.com

Two thirds of 17-year-old York Region students were at risk of being suspended for failing to be properly immunized, but have finished off the school year with the proper shots, medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji says. Watch out, seven-year-olds, you’re next. When the region checked in January, 8,900 of more than 13,000 17-year-old students in the region were either missing immunizations or had out-of-date records, putting them at risk of being sus-

pended from school. That works out to a 34 per cent compliance rate. Worried the students would head off to post-secondary school and the workforce without the proper immunizations, the region sent out reminder letters and held 54 extra immunization clinics on evenings and weekends. By the end of the school year, more than 99 per cent of the students had complied with Ontario legislation requiring parents to provide proof of their children’s immunization status against nine vaccine-preventable diseas-

Pizza and beer are dietary staples for many university and college students, but for Remo Palladini they’re also the perfect combination for celebrating Vaughan’s 25th anniversary as a city. The arrival of that municipal milestone inspired him to bring the two together and launch Vaughan Pizzafest, a three-day “family friendly” celebration on tap at the Woodbridge fairgrounds July 15 to 17. “There’s no better place to do a pizza fest,” said the lifelong Woodbridge resident. “It’s a predominantly Italian community and it’s the city’s birthday so the idea was to just throw a big pizza party.” Of course, the 10-plus pizzerias taking part — including Ricci’s Pizzeria, Za Pizzeria, Pie Woodfire Pizza Joint, and Slopes of Vesuvius, among others — don’t serve cheap, greasy and bland slices students scarf down to fill their bellies. Rather, they’ll be offering up artisan pies made with fresh and, in some cases, gourmet toppings. Same goes for the brew. We’re not talking about the watered-down swill poured in many pubs haunted by post-secondary students, but approximately 30 flavourful lagers, ales and stouts produced by roughly a dozen of Ontario’s small-batch, craft brewers such as Lake Wilcox Brewing, Beau’s All Natural Brewing, Highlander Brew Co. and Wild Card Brewing Company. And there’s more than just pizza and beer to tantalize your taste buds. Those who prefer their cheese

and pepperoni wrapped in a blanket of fried dough will be able to enjoy panzerottis as well as strombolis, pizza rolls and other “pizza related items,” Palladini said. An assortment of beverage alternatives is also available for nonbeer drinkers, including mixed drinks, water and, of course, Brio. Pizzafest also has an entertainment lineup brimming with local talent, including singer/songwriters Carlo Coppola, Joee and Laura Cavacece, performing Friday night. Saturday night, you’ll be able to catch performances by Stuck on

Planet Earth, Glass Ampp, Spookey Ruben and headliner Fast Romantics. There’s lots for the children to enjoy as well, including a chance to get up close with snakes, lizards and other reptiles courtesy of Reptilia; block-building fun by Legoland and a midway complete with rides, carnival games and a train, Palladini noted. Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Frank Corrado, a Woodbridge native, is coming out Sunday to meet fans and sign autographs. Richmond Hill-based comedian Frank Spadone will be there too,

serving as honourary chairman and emcee for the event. A Pizzafest wouldn’t be complete without a pizza-eating contest, so that’s going to be happening too, Palladini said. “It’s basically, eat, drink and be merry - that’s our goal for the event,” he said. “We want people come in and sample as much food as possible and we want everyone to have a good time. … We want to make sure the whole family can come out and not just stay for 20 minutes. We want you to stay there for two hours and for the kids to go on

GOOD TO KNOW: DATES AND HOURS: - Friday, July 15 from 4 to 11 p.m. - Saturday, July 16 noon until 11 p.m. - Sunday, July 17 noon until 7 p.m. Admission: $10. Pizza tickets cost $12. Each ticket consists of six slices with vendors charging between one and 20 slices for the pizza and other food. Pizza tickets also serve as tickets for the midway and other children’s activities. Drink tickets cost $5 each. A full ticket gets you a 12oz beer while half a ticket gets you a 5oz sample. For more information, visit www. vaughanpizzafest.com

some rides, have some fun, and eat some cotton candy or a snow cone.” “That’s what’s awesome about it — it’s for any age,” added Spadone. Proceeds from the event will go, in part, to support the Vaughan Yeoman rugby club and another charitable organization still to be confirmed, Palladini said. With Canada’s 150th birthday celebration happening next year, Palladini says organizers are cooking up plans for an even bigger Pizzafest with the intention of making it a main attraction on Vaughan’s summer event calendar.

Markham Rotary Ribfest serves up hot food, hot music and a Live-Painted Mural Creation all weekend long. The mural was commissioned and will be permanently installed in neighbouring downtown Markham. The ribfest event will be outdoors at the Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham. Other notable attractions include carnival rides and fun for families in the Scotiabank Kids Zone, a Cooling Station provided by On Side Restoration, and a Staged Truck auction provided by Heather Sally Design and Century 21 Leading Edge Realty’s Kimberly Clark, which will be awarded to the highest bidder. The Markham Rotary Ribfest and Music Festival was originally created by the Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise in 2003 as a way to bring the community together for a weekend of fun while raising funds from attendee donations for worthy local and international

humanitarian efforts. To date, the club has raised more than $350,000, and contributed to charitable organizations such as Markham Stouffville Hospital, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of York, Centre for Dreams, Evergreen Hospice and the Kenya Water and Sanitation Project. A very important announcement about the future of the Markham Rotary Ribfest and Music Festival will take place with members of Markham city council, honoured guests and sponsor representatives from the Main Stage on Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. The Markham Rotary Ribfest and Music Festival started because The Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise made a commitment to providing service to the Markham community and to participating in the humanitarian efforts of Rotary International. The Rotary Club decided the best way

to achieve these objectives was to organize an event that would give the community a place to enjoy food and entertainment, while connecting and celebrating Markham’s rich diversity.

ave you lined up lately for a new green and white health card or your licence renewal sticker? I have, and it was an interesting, frustrating yet uplifting experience. I received an official provincial government notice in the mail a few weeks ago stating that I had exactly 30 days to convert my old red-and-white health card to the new photo ID card. I had been hoping to avoid such an invitation/order, as I loved the fact that the card never expired and it had worked perfectly well for decades — providing me healthcare access whenever I needed it. However, in addition to the serious-sounding language used in the Ministry of Health letter, the truth is my beloved card was dogeared, ripped and held together with tape. I had to admit it was nearing the end of its plastic lifespan and the new green and white card seemed a safer option. So, I dutifully gathered the required documentation to bring to my local Service Ontario office. I was dreading the task, as the provincial office at Bernard on Yonge in Richmond Hill always has long lineups. Recently it had provoked a series of letters to the editor from residents expressing outrage at the lengthy lines, cramped space and overwhelmed staff. “Bring a water bottle, you’ll be standing a long time,” said one friend. “Just don’t even apply for the green card, keep using your red and white card,” advised someone else who shall remain nameless. “Go to the one on Bloomington Road in Aurora,” advised a reader, “there’s lots of room inside; staff are friendly and polite, too!” Armed with patience and all my needed documents, I arrived at the Richmond Hill Bernard office and was almost pleased to be the first client standing outside the door. In the past, I have often joined a long line of between 10 and 20 people when I need to renew my licence, so to get right up to the door was

Marney Beck a bonus. Within about five minutes, a long line of about a dozen people formed outside behind me on the hot, humid, sunny day. One was an elderly man with a cane. Ahead of me in the line inside the air-conditioned offices were parents with squirming children, people filling out forms at a counter, and a woman in long robes covering her from head to toe seated in one of only three chairs, with a son or relative standing in line. The languages spoken represented a mini United Nations, but everyone was polite and friendly. The Asian couple right behind me was a little too friendly, constantly giggling at private jokes and bumping into me — and apologizing — as they looked at their devices. As I inched my way to the front of the line, I became aware that one man with a strong Russian accent was giving the elderly man with the cane his spot in the line. Then came an active discussion and much gesturing with the woman seated on the chair, trying to give up her chair to the older man. Finally, a staff person at one of the counters helpfully waved over the elderly gentleman and said loudly, so all of us could hear, something to the effect that he would be served without waiting in line. Not a soul objected. How wonderfully Canadian it all was. Despite the fact the government office was overwhelmed, staff and residents maintained their composure and showed kindness and deference to each other. After exactly one hour wait, it was my turn and my new health card is now “in the mail” — if we don’t have a postal strike.

Re: York police union begins work-to-rule campaign, June 30. Concerning this article, the first thought that comes to mind is the lack of leadership on the part of the York Regional police services board chair. Presumably, it falls on the shoulders of the Markham mayor, as he is the chairperson. How would his finger pointing address the escalating police budget and the impending job action? The Sunshine List keeps getting longer and longer every year and has reached a critical point whereby more than 70 per cent of the force makes more than $100,000 a year. Contract after contract, the police services board essentially rubber stamped the benefits and salary increases without any serious dialogue with the union to work out a blueprint for a

balanced approach to smart policing and to maintain a long term, sustainable police budget. How is a mandated ticket quota an effective use of valuable police resources? Members of the police board get paid to sit on the board to ensure the police force operates in an efficient and sustainable manner to protect us. The mayor is compensated to be the chairperson, in addition to his compensation package north of $200,000. By the way, the mayor of Toronto makes less than the mayor of Markham, yet the City of Toronto is seven times larger than the City of Markham. From an economics standpoint, I feel the mayor has little credibility criticising the police union. There is a public bargaining process in place between the board and the union. The process to determine the mayor’s compensation is done by council behind closed doors. What is the criteria? Where is the perfor-

mance review? Where is the comparison to cities of similar size? The valid question is: has the mayor been doing an excellent job to earn his salaries, sitting as chair and board member at the police board, PowerStream and others and being compensated by each and every organization? To set an example, the budget restraint measure should start at the top. Let us not forget the mayor’s pet project a few years ago; the GTA arena fiasco. Markham taxpayers were on the hook for more than $750,000 with nothing to show for it. The irony is our mayor was re-elected unchallenged. The real question is: do residents of the great City of Markham deserve better?

York’s two boards get $41M to repair ‘high growth’ schools tkelly@yrmg.com

York Region’s schools will get a funding boost of $41 million over the next two years to help repair and renew existing buildings. The funding was announced Tuesday morning by provincial education minister Mitzie Hunter at Joseph A. Gibson Public School in Vaughan. The money breaks down to $25 million for York Region District School Board and $16 million for the York Catholic DSB. The minister said the cash will be used to “repair roofs, update HVAC units and modernize electrical and plumbing systems”. Along with prior funding commitments, money going to the York boards for repair and renewal funding now totals $120 million over the next two years, Hunter said. The province will invest an additional $1.1 billion provincewide over the next two years for school renewal to bring the total up to $2.7 billion when existing funding is added in, she said. “This money is urgently needed,” Hunter said. “A school with a long list of repairs is not serving our students at a level they deserve. “This funding means fresh asphalt, new flooring, enhanced play areas and more – all of the little things and some big things that exist in the background of students’ everyday experience.

Ontario education minister, Mitzie Hunter, unveils cash for school repairs at Vaughan’s Joseph A. Gibson school with Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca applauding the news. “It is important for people to know that Ontario’s world-class education system is being delivered in high-quality facilities.” She said that since 2003, “our government has invested more than $14 billion in school infrastructure, including 760 new schools and more than 735 additions and renovations. We’re in the midst of providing more than $12 billion over 10 years to Ontario’s school boards. This funding will help build more new schools in areas of high growth.”

Four York Region residents are accused of behaving badly in rural Ontario over the long weekend. At a traffic stop Saturday evening on Kawartha Lakes Road 121 near Burnt River, two York residents were caught with marijuana. Joanna Kwai, 27, of Richmond Hill and Frank Pao, 26, of Markham were each charged with possession of marijuana (under 30 grams). They are set to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay July 28.

Toronto police have made available security camera footage of a man wanted in three sex assaults in Toronto and York Region. Police said an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted around 1 p.m. as she unlocked the front door of her Keele Street and Rutherford Road home in Vaughan Thursday, May 26. In a second incident, police said a 33-year-old woman was walking in the Whitmore Avenue and Fairleigh Crescent area of Toronto June 8 when she was approached from behind and sexually assaulted around 11 p.m. The man fled when the woman screamed. Almost two weeks later, police said a 29-year-old woman was walking in the Brooke Avenue and Yonge Boulevard area on June 21 when a man approached from behind, dragged her up a driveway, and sexually assaulted her around 11:15 p.m. The man fled eastbound on Brooke Avenue when the woman fought him off. The suspect is described as black, 20 to 40 years old, 5’8 to 6’0, with a muscular build, short black hair, glasses and facial hair. He was seen driving a white 2013 or earlier model Mazda 3, which had dark coloured decal on the gas cap in the May 26 incident. Toronto and York Police are concerned there may be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to call Toronto Police Service at 416-808-7474, York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.

When Guilherme and Mirian Cadar came to Canada to study English as two students, they had no idea they would eventually make the Great White North their home. But here they stood, all those years later, on Canada Day; Mirian draped in a Canadian flag and Guilherme sporting a red cowboy hat. “We came for a vacation from Brazil and we just fell in love with the country and the people,” said Guilherme. “Everyone is made to feel so welcome here.” “It’s about the diversity, the honesty and the people,” Miriam added. The happy couple were just two of the 30 new Canadians welcomed into the country as citizens July 1 at Vaughan City Hall during a ceremony overseen by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Ontario’s Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell. Scanning the room, there were countless smiling faces, all new Canadians and their families, revelling in the freedom and opportunity of their new country. Among them was Dr. Hamid Paknahad, an orthodontist in Tehran, Iran, who spent years attempting to pass the dental exam in Canada, before eventually succeeding and becoming a licenced dentist. He took part in the ceremony accompanied by his two sons.

‘I LOVE CANADA’ “I am very happy because I love Canada,” he said. “This country has lots of freedom. The boys can attend mixed schools and learn to relate to the other sex.” Muhammad Chiblee arrived from Bangladesh in 2012 and became an IT consultant. Becoming Canadian is a great feeling, but doing it on Canada Day is just the icing on the cake, he said. “Before I was in fear; now I can say, I am Canadian,” he said, a huge grin on his face. Michael, Anat and Max, 5, all became Canadian citizens after leaving Russia and then Israel to make their homes in Ontario. “It’s a fantastic country to live and grow our kids,” said Michael. “We want to grow with the country ... a peaceful place where everyone feels welcome.” Commander Robert Johnston of The Royal Canadian Navy, and based at HMCS York, said he always uses these ceremonies to remind himself just how lucky he and all other Canadians are to live in this country. “I think about what it must be like to leave one place to get to another,” he said. “It gives me time to reflect on how lucky we are to be citizens of this country.” For Mayor Bevilacqua, it is his desire to witness people wanting to give their best, grow and build the country that affects him most. “It’s about people coming from around the world and giving their best,” he said. “It warms my heart to see so many join the Canadian family.”

York Region has launched a campaign to rally public pressure for the extension of the Yonge Street subway north to Richmond Hill. The region and the York Region Rapid Transit Corporation want to build on the momentum created by a $55-million investment by the province last month. The money will be used for preliminary design work needed to bring the subway north from Finch Avenue to Hwy. 7. “The Yonge North Subway Extension project is now on track and moving forward thanks to the generous support of our partner, the government of Ontario,” regional chairperson Wayne Emmerson said in a statement Tuesday to kick off the campaign. “We now need to secure a long-term funding commitment to

.com

make this subway a reality.” The $4-billion subway extension is the region’s top transit priority and would accommodate some 165,000 riders on weekdays. “The subway extension is the No. 1 rapid transit priority of regional council for good reason. There are currently 20,000 people a day packed into buses along Yonge Street between Finch Station and Hwy. 7,” Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, chairperson of the transit corporation’s board of directors, said. “It will also help us keep up with the tremendous growth and job creation we are experiencing.” The first phase of the campaign includes launch of a website, yongesubwaynow.ca, with a petition where residents ask provincial and federal governments for funds. - Lisa Queen

Thornhill hockey league taps into First Shift newcomer program BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

The Thornhill Community Hockey League wants to introduce some youngsters to the sport who have never had the good fortune of being players in the past. To provide boys and girls between the ages of six to 10 with that opportunity, the TCHL was one of 55 minor hockey associations in Ontario which recently received assistance from Hockey Canada, the Ontario Hockey Federation and Bauer Sports through their First Shift program. Designed to break down barriers a family may face when thinking about participating in hockey, the First Shift program ensures a welcoming, safe, affordable and fun experience for those new to the sport. As a part of the program, youngsters are outfitted in Bauer equipment from head to toe and receive six on-ice learn-to-play sessions. Stating this is the first year their organization applied to be a part of the program, Julian Herzberg, TCHL president, said they made a formal application earlier in the year. When the successful applicants were announced, the TCHL was among the groups

to earn funding. “We are happy to have been selected for the Bauer First Shift program,” Herzberg said. Scott Carlow, OHF co-ordinator, development, was also elated to see the TCHL included as a part of the First Shift program, entering its third year of existence and continuing to grow in popularity after it featured 21 programs last year. A big part of the expansion is due to the population growth witnessed in the area — especially with the number of families with youngsters. “Thornhill is a growing area of the GTA which goes hand-in-hand with what the First Shift program is trying to accomplish by welcoming new players and their families to the game of hockey,” he said. “Thornhill is part of the meteoric rise in popularity of the First Shift where we had 21 programs last year and is now up to 55 programs across the OHF. “We have no doubt Thornhill will do an excellent job of continuing to promote hockey to the many newcomers of the sport.”

Grayden Gottschalk wanted to play hockey close to his Thornhill residence. The Oshawa Generals complied with the 18-year-old, six-foot, five-inch forward’s wish when they signed him for the 2016-17 Ontario Hockey League season, the club announced Monday. Playing last season as a rookie with the North York Rangers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Gottschalk compiled 19 goals and 23 assists in 54 regular season tilts. His 19 goals was third-highest on North York, while his 42 points was fifth-highest of the club. Gottschalk was previously on the pro-

Prior to playing for North York, Gottschalk played with the Richmond Hill Coyotes midget AAA program.
