Welcoming Thornhill host Esti Cohen is surrounded by young visitors from Israel at a special breakfast yesterday, held at Beth Avraham Yoseph synagogue in Thornhill. The youths, who have lived through personal tragedies of war back home, are in Canada to relax and bond with others affected by war. The group was headed to enjoy a day at Niagara Falls. A Liberal story lastweek about the visitors attracted a great deal of interest and offers of support.

Support, interest grows for war-scarred visitors After an article appeared in The Thornhill Liberal last week about the program and how it brings young Israelis who have lost a parent or been affected by war to Thornhill for a brief vacation, positive response grew. “The article made a buzz,” Cohen said. Responses included people who want to host these young people. ”Oh my god, I want to be a host,” people told her. “People are fighting to host,” she said. The story was read and passed around on social media and on the

Four siblings reflect on 16 years as campers and staff at Markham’s Camp Robin Hood on a smoldering Wednesday. This quadruplet — Rebecca, Zachary, Brianna and Kaitlyn Unger — have attended the day camp on Reesor Road near Major Mackenzie Drive since they were three years old. Rebecca has so enjoyed her camp experience that she chose teaching as a career, in part so she can head back to the camp each summer. But, when she was younger, she remembers feeling the typical camper jitters. She used to be afraid of getting into a canoe. “I was scared of tipping. I thought there were alligators in the pond,” she said. (There aren’t). Her brother Zachary used to be scared of swimming. Sister Brianna recalls how as a very young camper, Zachary would just sit on his towel and cry as swim staff devised ways to get him in the water (it worked – he loves swimming now). For Kaitlyn, it was fears of the dark. “I wanted to develop photos, but didn’t want to go into the photography darkroom,” she said. Brianna doesn’t remember having fears or struggles as a camper. She just remembers loving camp. Today, the 19-year-old siblings work there, alongside their mother, Bev Unger, who is a registered nurse and the camp’s health coordinator. Kaitlyn is lead specialist for land sports and gymnastics, Rebecca and Brianna are both unit heads and Zachary is a member of the camp’s maintenance crew. The four teens remember the days when they were young campers and their mother would drive around the camp in a golf cart to round them up at the end of the day. She made a special whistling sound to alert them: “Where are you? Come find me”. (Interesting fact: Zachary and Rebecca can whistle, but the other two siblings cannot). The four siblings grew up in Ajax, where their parents remain.

SEPARATED AT SCHOOL During the school year, they now live in different cities. Rebecca is in Kingston at Queen’s University, Zachary is in Ajax attending Durham College, Brianna studies in Hamilton at McMaster University and Kaitlyn is in Waterloo at Waterloo University. But, when the weather turns mild, they reunite in the wild. “We all enjoy it and have a strong desire to come back,” Rebecca said, “in part because of the sense of com-

TRIPLETS AND TWINS Part way through the summer, a set of triplet campers will be in Rebecca’s unit. One family has two sets of twins — the younger twins are also in Rebecca’s unit. The directors of Camp Robin Hood also co-own an overnight camp called Camp Walden, where three staff members each have a twin. Patti Stulberg, Robin Hood’s registration director and bookkeeper, has twin daughters – Lesley and Jessica – who are younger than the Unger teens. The Stulberg sisters, who are Richmond Hill residents, used to play alongside the Unger children before and after camp and today, they still remain close. Now 17, Lesley is a counsellor and Jessica works on swim staff. Each Unger sibling has favourite memories of growing up at the

camp. For Kaitlyn, it was canoeing in a mock Survivor-type game. Brianna loved camper overnights, especially the one when campers had to pitch tents as part of a pretend Amazing Race game. She remembers the awesome feeling when her team won. Rebecca loved karate and has a good memory of the time the karate area of camp hosted an obstacle course. As for Zachary, he learned a lot about carpentry at camp, a subject that is a current passion and possible future career path for him. He calls Robin Hood his “home away from home,” a sentiment his sisters share. “There’s no place I feel more like myself than here,” Rebecca said. While at school there may have been cliques or other kinds of social pressure, but here she just always felt accepted, she said. “There’s no judgment,” Rebecca CONTRIBUTED PHOTO said. “Everyone is made to feel accept- Kaitlyn, top left, and Brianna Unger with siblings Rebecca, front, and ed. This Class EA Study, following the City’s Transportation Master Plan – A New Path (2013), advances implementation of the Portage Parkway widening and easterly extension from Applewood Crescent to Creditstone Road, a strategic network improvement supporting the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre area. STUDY PROCESS The EA Study assessed the planned improvements to Portage Parkway from Applewood Crescent to West of Black Creek (Part A) and concurrently for the Portage Parkway Extension from West of Black Creek to Creditstone Road (Part B) as two interrelated parts, the project limits of which were refined through the study. The assessment has considered the technical, environmental, socio-economic and financial criteria in order to establish the preferred design alternative for the overall study (Parts A and B). This study was conducted as a Schedule “C” project following phases 1 through 4 of the Municipal Engineers Association “Municipal Class Environmental Assessment” (October 2000, as amended in 2007, 2011 and 2015). A problem statement, alternative solutions, and alternative design concepts were presented for review and comment at two Public Information Centres held on November 25, 2015 and March 9, 2016. Documentation for the interrelated Schedule C project for the Portage Parkway Extension from West of Black Creek to Creditstone Road (Part B) is the subject of a separate Environmental Study Report and future Notice of Completion. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY REPORT – PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Environmental Study Report (ESR) documents the process and preferred design alternative for the Portage Parkway Widening and Easterly Extension to West of Black Creek (Part A) as a multi-modal street including the following key elements: - widen and improve Portage Parkway to a 33 metre right-of way from Applewood Crescent to Jane Street including - active transportation facilities (cycle tracks and sidewalks) - 4 general purpose lanes (2 in each direction) with wider curb lanes facilitating transit vehicles and trucks - auxiliary centre/left turn lane - extend Portage Parkway easterly from Jane Street to an interim terminus west of the Black Creek channel - improvements to existing and future intersections including Applewood Crescent, Edgeley Boulevard and at realigned Millway Avenue

Worker buried up to waist, crews feared ‘very dangerous’ trench collapse By SIMONE JOSEPH

sjoseph@yrmg.com

A man was rescued from a collapsed trench in the John Street and Bayview Avenue area of Thornhill Monday morning. Emergency crews from Markham and Richmond Hill extricated the trapped man, who was buried to his waist, according to the Richmond Hill Fire Department. He was in stable condition with a broken leg or possible fractures, according to Shane Caskanette, Richmond Hill’s deputy fire chief. There was a partial trench collapse and the man was doing work in a sewer or catch basin, said Caskanette. He was stuck about 20 feet down. The rescue was a joint effort between Richmond Hill and Markham fire departments, as well as EMS (emergency medical services) and York Regional Police. Representatives from the Min-

istry of Labour also came to the scene. It was more complicated than an ordinary rescue, so more emergency workers and crews had to be called in, according to Caskanette. The man was put on ropes and pulled to the surface, Caskanette said. The fact that the trench had partially collapsed made the situation particularly dire, he said. “It was a very dangerous position. We didn’t want to keep him or the crews down there longer than we had to for fear of (trench) collapse,” he said. He estimated the rescue lasted at least an hour. Markham Fire was called first, then Richmond Hill received a call at 11:44 a.m. to a construction area east of Bayview Avenue on John Street. The rescue was very much a co-operation between the two fire departments, EMS and YRP. “It was a concerted effort,” he said.

Richmond Hill and Markham fire crews were able to extricate a man from a collapsed trench on Monday morning at a construction site at Bayview and John in Thornhill.

Are dryers a dangerous appliance? The Ontario fire department responds to a dryer fire on average every 2 days. Dryers produce highly flammable lint that accumulates in the venting system and in the dryers housing. All dryers employ either electric or gas heating elements that can become an ignition point for lint. The combination of lint and high heat creates a fire hazard if allowed to go unchecked for an extended period of time. Vents that are clogged damaged, or constructed of improper materials make your dryer work harder, causing mechanical failures that can also ignite lint and cause a dryer fire. Signs that your dryer or vent needs attention are: clothes take longer than a normal cycle to dry, lint build-up around

the outside of your dryer, your dryer shuts off mid cycle, or there is a burning smell. Dryer manufacturers typically recommend you have your dryer vents serviced annually. A professional dryer vent specialist will run a complete diagnostic of your dryer and venting to ensure the system is fire safe and energy efficient. They will ensure your vent is properly installed with the proper venting material and offer tips on how to make your dryer safe and last longer. Having your dryer properly maintained will make your dryer fire safe and can decrease energy costs by up to $24 per month. Read more at

What about gender parity on our local councils?

Own up to car damage

R

emember the words of newly-minted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiling his new cabinet made up of an equal number of male and female MPs, and more diverse than ever seen before? To media questions as to why he made good on his promise to have equal representation of women on his inner circle, he simply replied, “Because it’s 2015”. Ever since, opponents and supporters have watched for signals that the PM and his new Liberal government are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to the role of women in government. This week another move to support gender parity — the Liberals restored funding options to women’s organizations which had been stripped of support during the Stephen Harper years. Specifically, the current government says advocacy activities by women’s groups across the country do not disqualify them for government funding. Making the announcement was MP Patty Hadju, Minister of Status of Women, noting: “I’m proud of the fact that we are restoring support for advocacy within the scope of projects funded through Status of Women Canada. Advocacy is what will ensure that our decisions are informed and properly address the needs of Canadians. This action ... reflects our renewed focus on gender equality as a goal shared by all Canadians.” In the Harper years, cuts to funding of the Status of Women organization saw 12 of 16 regional offices closed and funding criteria was redrafted. This meant that dozens of women’s service providers — including rape crisis centres — that participated in advocacy or lobbying for law reform, became ineligible for funding or saw budgets slashed. Why does this matter? As compared to other countries, Canada has been falling behind the gender equity curve. Poverty rates have been rising for

Marney Beck elderly single women and singleparent families headed by women. The pay gap between women and men has widened in this country and a 2015 study noted that Canada ranked 52nd in terms of female representation in Parliament. So while that has changed significantly for the better in Ottawa, what about in your own municipality? Look at your regional and local elected politicians and there’s certainly no gender parity there. Sitting at the Region of York — making key decisions on roads, sewers, waste and recycling pickup, transit, social services and overall tax rates — are 21 elected representatives. Only four are women. Whitchurch-Stouffville has no women politicians — all seven are men. Richmond Hill and Aurora have two of nine politicians who are women, Vaughan and Newmarket have three of nine, Markham four of 12, and the rural municipalities of King, East Gwillimbury and Georgina have three, two and two women on council respectively, with the latter two municipalities boasting female mayors. Given that half the population of Canada is female, isn’t it about time that half of every level of government reflects that simple fact? There’s just over two years before we all go back to the polls to elect municipal representatives. Let’s hope voters in 2018 have opportunities to choose qualified, talented women candidates. With strong federal signals that women are eminently qualified to lead us, let’s hope that galvanizes and encourages female candidates in all our towns and cities to consider a role in politics.

Why do some people not take responsibility for their actions that hurt other people? On June 23 at around 2 p.m., I was grocery shopping at Longo’s on Major Mackenzie Drive near Jane Street in Maple. My 2006 Corolla car was parked closed to ScotiaBank. After finishing my shopping I was aware that on my left there was a white car and on my right was a dark car. I was in a hurry to get home, so I did not realize that my car on the driver’s side was hit very near the headlights, leaving a large dent close to the size of a football. When I parked my car near my residence I realized what happened to my car. The reason I am writing is to remind people that when they damage other people’s property — in this case a car — they should take responsibility to account for their actions and leave a note with contact information, so the proper action can be taken. I am a senior citizen who lives on a very limited income and this action caused me a great deal of financial hardship. I would like to remind such person(s) of a very popular saying: “What goes around comes around”. Whoever you are, in my opinion, you are a coward and have no conscience. You should take responsibility for your actions that hurt other people. You can still redeem yourself by contacting me at 289304-8225 and providing me with the necessary information so the damage to my car can be properly taken care.

series] I was disappointed at the attitude with which the subject matter was presented. It seems the subject of the article was not so much about Baby Boomers selling their dream home in order to downsize, but more about how successful the real estate market, in particular one real estate agent, was, at manipulating the game. The article avoids the wider, real problem, in my opinion, and the forces that are seriously affecting the ability of Canadians who have grown up here, were educated here, and now work here and pay taxes here to obtain affordable housing. I’ve lived here for almost 30 years and never would have thought that my children would never be able to afford to buy some kind of home in the general vicinity, especially now that my wife and I are retired. Both of my children are well educated and have professional careers. And as my wife and I get older, it would have been nice to have them closer if we required some help. ing the year, and have no real sense of community. The other day I received an advertisement from a real estate agent, loudly proclaiming on it “I have overseas buyers ready to buy.” This pretty well sums up the issue. What’s occurring in our real estate market is just one of the symptoms of how big income inequality has become over the last 30 years. We’re talking about the one per cent of the one per cent here, or as they are affectionately known as, “Plutocrats”. How they have achieved their incredible wealth and power is unknown; for the rest of us, their reach is reflected in government policies, or lack thereof, from social programs to the environment. Government at every level in Canada has lacked the will to stop this “Canada For Sale” rampage. Think the global economy is good for everyone? Guess again. All of our governments at every level must act now.

Forester still defines the compact CUV Story and photos by Jim Robinson Metroland Wheels HIGH RIVER, AB: While it can be successfully argued the Subaru Forester created the compact crossover; there is little doubt it defined the segment in terms of utility and capability. At the time the Forester was shown in 1995 at the Tokyo Motor Show as the Streega concept, competitive all-wheel-drive compact CUVs were practically non-existent. Sure, there was the AMC Eagle that was just about to go out of production and the first generation Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. But they were smaller and the Forester boasted standard allwheel-drive. Over the years, the Forester has remained pretty true to its roots with, in typical Subaru fashion, continual improvements. This results in incredible owner loyalty with the Forester being the brand’s bread and butter seller.

So for 2017, Subaru stuck with a winner, making just incremental changes. There are two models each with its own “boxer” four-cylinder engine and a choice of six-speed manual or CVT transmissions and each a different all-wheel-drive system. On the entry and mid-trim 2.5i models there is a naturally aspirated version of the long serving and ultra reliable 2.5-litre “boxer” four-cylinder with 170 hp and 174 lb/ft of torque. The 2.5-litre is rated as a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV). At the top is the 250 hp and 278 lb/ft twin scroll turbo 2.0-litre model called the 2.0XT. Fuel rating on the 2.5i CVT is 9.2/7.4L/100 (31/38 mpg) city/highway on regular fuel. Fuel numbers on the manual are still be calculated. On premium fuel, the 2.0XT gets 10.2/8.6L/100 km. Nissan Micro Cup true to the spirit of racing Story and photos by Jim Robinson Metroland Wheels BOWMANVILLE, ON: It’s just about the cheapest racing bang for your buck on the planet and it’s called the Nissan Micra Cup. Now in its second season, the little race series that could has become wildly successful due to a lot of factors, but mostly, it’s just good fun. And it’s all pretty simple. You start with a $9,995 Nissan Micra and JD Racing and Competition in Montreal adds $13,000 of race grade equipment, including a stiffer Nismo STune suspension kit, FIA-approved racing seat with five-point harness, modified exhaust, high-performance brake pads, safety cage, driver protection net, race spec alloy wheels with Pirelli low-profile tires, and last but not least, a fire extinguisher. Oh, and you get a racing suit too. So for about $23,000 you have a full-blown racecar. By the time you add in things such as a trailer, fuel, tires and sundries, it adds up to about the same as a steering wheel on a Formula One car. The genesis of the Nissan Micra Cup began at the Toronto Auto Show in 2014 when Nissan announced sub ten grand pricing for the 2015 Mexican-made Micra subcompact car.

$ in the GTA. At age 54, Wong is a competition class runner, swimmer and cyclist, but also a highly skilled racecar driver in addition to being a very generous contributor to community programs and funding campaigns. To show you what kind if guy he is, Wong spotted an aspiring under 10 go-karter hovering in the Nissan Cup pits with his racing togs on. Wong called the kid over, said he wanted to sponsor him and handed him $500, asking only that the lad have a Alta Group logo displayed somewhere for the rest of the season. Last year, Wong had one car entered for driver Martin Gray, but this year he is fielding a second car for himself. The only other Ontario driver is Brian Makse of Guelph running a car under the Guelph Waterloo Nissan banner. Wong said he is confident the series is just starting to catch on, pointing to the long queue of enthusiasts who lined up for driver autographs this past weekend. What makes it so popular is the closeness of the racing. Each car is exactly the same, with a stock 1.6-litre, twin cam inline four-cylinder engine with 109 hp and 107 ft/lb of torque driving the front wheels. Each is weighed before each race and owner/ drivers can only buy approved parts through Micra Cup to avoid any hanky panky. But the best part is how well everyone involved gets along with teams often helping competitors get to the start on time, if they came to grief in qualifying. If you want to see racing at its best, the next time the Micra Cup will be in Ontario is NASCAR weekend at Mosport Sept. 2-4. In the meantime, information on the series and other races this season can be found at www.nissan. ca/coupemicra.

Quebec auto journalist and noted racer, Jacques Deshaies, saw an opportunity to created a grassroots-level racing series. Together with Nissan Canada and its corporate senior communications manager, Didier Marsaud, the series was born just before the start of the 2015 racing season. The whole concept caught fire in Quebec last year and I will always remember that at the Montreal Grand Prix last year, the Micra Cup drivers got a bigger ovation than F1 champion Lewis Hamilton. Now in its second season, the series has spread outside of Quebec with eight double weekend events for a total of 16 races, with three of the events in Ontario — the most recent being July to 10 during the prestigious IMSA Series at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport) in Bowanville. Some 26 cars took part in Race One on Saturday and Race Two on Sunday with Xavier Coupal winning on Saturday with last year’s series champion, Olivier Bedard taking the flag on Sunday. And the beauty is you can participate in as many or as few of the races as you wish. A perfect example is Eddy Wong, dealer principal of the Alta Group of Nissan and Infiniti dealerships

Forester longest running Top Safety Pick for small SUV class Continued from page 9

Manual AWD versions feature a viscous-coupling and self-locking limited slip centre differential that holds a constant 50/50 balance of torque between the front and rear axles. With the CVT, there is an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch (exclusive to Subaru) that actively manages torque distribution based on acceleration, deceleration, cornering and available traction. The turbo adds the Si-Drive engine management system with three driverselectable settings for maximum control. Both AWD versions share a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability program that results in the best all-weather or off-road travel and includes Hill Descent Control. In addition, the turbo models (with optional Technology Package) now have Active Torque Vectoring first seen on the WRX STI performance sedan. Of course any CUV is about utility and the Forester has the claimed best cargo volume in the segment with 974 litres behind the second row seat and 2,115 litres folded. The sunroof eats into this slightly with 892 litres behind the second row, 1,940 litres folded. There are four tiedowns and two hooks in the cargo area. Towing with both engines is 680 kg with trailer brakes, 453 kg without. >>

Package is Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) that uses four sonar sensors to detect large objects such as posts or people when backing up. If the driver does not react, RAB steps in and stops the Forester. To demonstrate how it works, Subaru set up a large garbage bin and told us to back up without putting a foot on the brake pedal. Every time, the system stopped the Forester. But my co-driver asked what would happen if the sensors were coated with mud or ice, i.e., would there be a warning the system was not working, such as Mercedes-Benz does with a visual prompt and audible warning? The engineer taped over the sensors and backed

Driving time was extensive with my partner and I driving both the topline 2.5i Limited and 2.5i CVT with Convenience Package, which will probably be the highest volume model. But I was surprised to learn the upmarket Touring and Limited are expected to account for up to 20 per cent of sales. There were no turbo models available at the launch. The drive route was in and around High River, AB, which is now well on the mend from the devastating flood of four years ago. Roads were a mix of laser straight ranch roads and into the start of the foothills where there were no surprises with both models we drove breathing

a little hard on steeper ascents, but otherwise with enough power to get the job done. One exercise included activating the X-mode, which is standard on all Subaru CVTs and helps reduce potential wheel slip on slippery surfaces, climbing steep inclines and navigating rough roads. At the Sierra Ranch, the Foresters were sent out through a creek and up and down inclines that would have stopped lesser vehicles with no problems. Bottom line is the 2017 Subaru Forester continues to provide all the core values that have made the brand synonymous with the kind of reliability and competence that keeps bringing people back to the brand.

Pokémon GO fever sweeps across York communities By TERESA LATCHFORD

tlatchford@yrmg.com

York Region has the “gotta catch’em all” fever. It has been the scene on street corners, public trails and parks across the region: gaggles of people congregated in one area staring at their cellphones. Just like Newmarket’s Justine Stevens and Kyle Cane, they are hunting Pokémon, which they will then train for battle. “I have loved Pokémon since I was born,” Stevens said, showing three tattoos of Pokémon characters on her chest. “When it popped up on my Facebook page, I thought, ‘This is way too cool to be true.’” Pokémon GO, a free app that allows players to search the cartoon creatures in real-world locations, capture them in Poké Balls and train them for battle, launched in Canada Sunday. Nintendo seems to have lucked onto the perfect storm: a generation glued to digital devices, tuned in to nostalgia and looking for ways to connect in this great summer weather. Not everyone’s laughing, though. Mary Lynn Mulroney has seen many around her neighbourhood at Major Mackenzie and Bathurst — her 29-year-old son even caught one on their chimney — but some neighbours weren’t so thrilled. “One is in the midst of moving. The other

is quiet and doesn’t need a crowd on his front lawn.” And when it’s not your yard but a fire station or hospital, there are even bigger concerns. Vaughan Fire and Emergency Services are asking that people stay away from two fire stations, saying that people are in the way. Hospitals are even weighing in. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto asked players not to drop lures inside or outside the hospital out of safety concerns. Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill has not noticed an increase in activity associated with Pokémon GO in buildings or on hospital grounds, according to spokesperson Stefanie Kreibe, but she reminds players to be aware of surroundings and avoid scaling fences and structures to gain access to Pokemon locations. It is rare for a Pokemon to spawn in someone’s back yard, but OPP is warning trainers that playing the game isn’t an excuse to trespass. People were reported gathering across the region this week — Newmarket’s Main Street, public libraries, town halls, downtown Unionville, Vaughan Mills Mall, Milliken Mills Park and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg all saw Pokemon action. - with files by Kim Zarzour

York Region to see 33 electric vehicle charging stations tlatchford@yrmg.com

Electric car drivers will soon be able to extend their trips more easily in York Region thanks to a grant from the Ontario government. The province announced last week it is working with 24 public and private-sector partners to install electric vehicle charging stations in cities, along highways, at workplaces and in public areas across Ontario. The project is being funded through the Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario grant program. The installation of 500 electric charging stations in 250 locations, 18 of which are in York Region, is expected to be complete by April 1, 2017, forming the largest public network of Level 3 stations in Canada. However, many of the stations, including 27 of the 33 to be installed in York Region, will be Level 2. Level 2 stations can provide full charges in a matter of hours, such as overnight or during the day while the vehicle’s owner is at work, though often, a full charge is not necessary for the user to get where they need to go. Level 3 stations can provide full charges in a matter of minutes, such as during a coffee or lunch break.

ADveRTORIAL

By Sam Potter IF YOU suffer from low back pain and sciatica, you are one of over 2 million adults in the Canada with this often crippling spinal condition. Shooting, stabbing and burning pains from the low back, sometimes with additional pain through the buttocks and down the legs are all symptoms of a pinched nerves often called “sciatica”. In severe cases, it can lead to muscle wasting, numbness and constant tingling down to the tip of the toes. Left untreated, the intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life. That is, until now... Recent advances in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain have led to the development and huge success of Advanced Structural Correction Technique. While Milos Raonic’s success on the tennis courts is an inspiration to young aspiring players, it’s something that’s also motivating his childhood coach and mentor. Having coached the recent Wimbledon finalist from age 8 to 17, Thornhill resident Casey Curtis acknowledges it gives him great satisfaction to be recognized as the man who built Raonic’s devastating serve. “We definitely worked many, many hours on his first serve when Milos was young. It’s an honour to be recognized for that and obviously, it’s great to see his success on the tennis courts now,” said Curtis, who plans to release a detailed instructional video on the mechanics of Raonic’s serve later this summer. While the blistering serve remains Raonic’s biggest weapon, Curtis acknowledges his former student is quickly developing a nice all-around game. The high performance tennis coach credits Raonic’s newest addition to his coaching staff and former world No. 1, John McEnroe, for his positive influence. “One of the most important parts of the game is being able to get to the net and being comfortable with making tough volleys. John was great at that during his career and that’s something I’m sure he’s sharing with Milos,” Curtis said of McEnroe, who recently joined Raonic’s coaching staff. “I know they both really respect each other, so I defi-

nitely think it’s a good thing Milos is working with John.” Seeing the success of his former student motivates the high performace coach to develop more future stars on the tennis courts. “I feel that I have that ability and I want to continue to use that ability,” Curtis said. According to Heather Schrader, Curtis’ talents as a mentor and coach are second to none. “My son Joseph has not had a coach the calibre of Casey giving him encouragement and insight. Seeing the success of Milos and knowing how much Casey had to do with his success is really motivating for Joseph,” said the North Carolina mother, whose 18-year-old son relocated to Thornhill this summer to train with Curtis. “It’s clear in the short time he’s worked with Casey, Joseph has already made a lot of improvement; and it’s also clear that Casey is great at what he does,” she added. Someone else eager to endorse Curtis is the recent Wimbledon finalist himself. “He was very tough and

demanding, in a good way,” Raonic told The Thornhill Liberal in a previous interview of his childhood coach. “I came to the club as a beginner. He asked me to work hard ... pushed me to new limits and helped me reach the next level. “He has dedicated his life to tennis and he invests himself and his time to help tennis players to develop their game. He cares and he will do anything to help you improve and ... reach your potential.” In assessing his current group of students, Curtis — who coaches out of the Richmond Hill Tennis Club — is optimistic he may have other tennis superstars in the mix. “I’ve got a lot of good young athletes I’m working with now that I’m very excited about,” said the York University grad, who started his coaching career in the late 1970s. “A lot of the students are obviously inspired by what Milos has accomplished. My goal now is to train more players who are going to be able to play professionally.” Curtis and his ambitious tennis hopefuls, are looking forward to seeing Raonic up close when he competes against the best in the world at the upcoming Rogers Cup. “For sure I will be there with the kids at some point. It’ll be great for them to see Milos and the other pros compete and see how they handle themselves — because playing at the highest level is what these kids aspire to do.” - David Li is a Thornhill freelance writer

A Creditstone Road industrial plant had to be evacuated Monday night after a small fire broke out around 11 p.m. The minor blaze led to four fire trucks arriving on scene for about half an hour and a two-hour delay in operations, as 40 employees safely left the premises of Normpac, a manufacturer of corrugated and solid fibre boxes. Andrew Zvanitajs, deputy fire chief of operations for Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service, said, “they have a hopper collection system

that contains fine particles of excess paper and they had a small, smoldering fire in one of their hopper-containment systems. The fire was limited to the collection system and part of the belt on the containment system. Firefighters got in there and used a dry-chemical extinguisher to put the fire out.” Zvanitajs added there was minimal impact to the business with no dollar loss. “They were interrupted two to three hours. We were on scene for an hour and a half. We committed four trucks for 25 minutes, left two trucks to finish up and we will probably send an investigator over there today to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Zvanitajs.

Cohen is hoping for donations for this program as well as donations for the IDF widows and orphans camp program. “We need to help the children with this programming. They can get away and forget about everything. They get love and hugs,” Cohen explained, emphasizing the importance of having the youth come together and

Milos Raonic was originally scheduled to represent Canada in the tennis competition at the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But the 25-year-old Thornhill native and recent 2016 Wimbledon men’s singles’ finalist announced a change of heart Friday. In a Tennis Canada announcement, Raonic said he elected to withdraw his participation from the 2016 Summer Games. Factoring into his decision was the threat of the Zika virus. Raonic, who competed for Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics, was quick to thank Tennis Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee for their support in his decision.

Milos Raonic withdraws from Team Canada. “It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my withdrawal from participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” he said in a news release. “After much deliberation with my family and coaches,

I am making this decision for a variety of health concerns including the uncertainty around the Zika virus. “This was a difficult, personal choice and I do not wish for it to impact the decision of any other athlete heading to the Games. I am very proud to have competed for Canada at the London 2012 Summer Olympics, and on the world stage at several Davis Cups. I look forward to cheering on Team Canada this summer.” Pending invitation by the International Tennis Federation and Canadian Olympic Committee approval, Tennis Canada will nominate Daniel Nestor to replace Raonic in the men’s doubles draw to partner with Vasek Pospisil. - Michael Hayakawa

While superstar golfers such as Brooke Henderson, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson promote the sport magnificently through their success on the course, Vaughan resident Gavin Roth takes pride in being able to do his part in the boardroom and behind the scenes. Having held a number of senior management positions since 2000 within the sports and entertainment industry, Roth has been a key member of Golf Canada’s executive team since 2014. As the chief commercial officer for Golf Canada — a national governing organization with the mandate to grow the sport — Roth oversees everything from sponsorship and hospitality sales to media, marketing and communications. The 47-year-old York University alumni says he’s happy to have found a career so closely connected to his longtime passion. “I took up the game of golf seriously in my late teens and it’s since been one of my biggest passions,” said Roth, who lived in Richmond Hill for more than two decades before relocating to Vaughan earlier this year. In addition to Canadian teen sensation Henderson, Roth says there are a number of Canadians competing professionally who are capable of enjoying similar break-

throughs in the near future. While the success of Canadian athletes on the world stage is of Gavin Roth u t m o s t importance in terms growing golf domestically, Roth says it’s important to showcase the world’s best golfers to fans on Canadian soil and specifically, points to the upcoming RBC Canadian Open, which runs July 18 through 24 at Glen Abbey in Oakville. “The RBC Canadian Open is a special event in Canadian sports. It’s the third oldest national championship in golf behind the British Open and the U.S. Open,” he said of the historic tournament which dates back to 1904. “This year, we’ve got the world No. 1 and world No. 2 confirmed; plus a world class field and a number of talented Canadians... So it’s going to be a treat for Canadian golf fans,” he said. In addition to hosting the world’s best, Roth says there are a number of fun and interactive events planned to engage and excite golfers and fans alike starting Monday. Roth hints there may be some notable celebrity fans in attendance this year. “The nice twist is that the world No. 2 golfer, Dustin

Johnson, is married to Wayne Gretzky’s daughter, Paulina, so who knows, maybe we might see Wayne onsite cheering for his son-in-law,” he said of the hockey legend. Roth emphasizes that the RBC Canadian Open is a great family event — especially given the fact that children 17 and under are admitted free. “Juniors 17 and younger are free all weekend, so it’s a great opportunity to spend some quality family time and enjoy a world-class event with world-class talent,” he suggested. Roth believes seeing the world’s best golfers competing live will inspire many youngsters to take up the sport — just as he did 30 years ago. So while he will not hoist a trophy or have the admiration of millions of golf fans, Roth says his reward is simply knowing that his efforts behind the scene ultimately contribute to the growth and betterment of the sport he’s loved since his teen years. “I’ve had a strong attachment to the game since my late teens and it’s become one of my biggest passions — so to be in a career where I have the platform to positively impact a sport that means so much to me and help it grow, that gives me a lot of fulfilment.” To find out more about the Canadian Open, visit www. rbccanadianopen.com - David Li is a Thornhill freelance writer.
