Vaulter bandit suspect led fascinating life 53-year-old extradited from Switzerland

Former MPP writes about oft-criticized millennials PAGE 3

BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

After 21 bank robberies across Canada — the nation’s most prolific spree — the so-called vaulter bandit is now on Canadian soil and before the courts.

York Regional Police told media Tuesday of Jeffrey Shuman’s fascinating life, which included a stint in the U.S. Navy and as a mortgage broker, as well as a number of incarnations. Shuman was also known as the “Reebok” bank robber in the southern U.S. and hid from law enforcement as a French citizen. Shuman, 53, allegedly committed 12 bank robberies in York

Region between 2013 and 2015 along with a number of others in the GTA and Calgary. But police were unable to get anything on him. That was until last year when he allegedly left evidence in a Mississauga bank. After it was tested in the U.S., police located Shuman in France, where he has citizenship. They then followed him to

Switzerland in 2015, where he was arrested, police said. On the flight back to Canada, he complained of chest pains, an alleged ruse to land back in France, complicating his extradition, according to police. But doctors cleared him and he was eventually brought back to Canada. See ‘SUSPECTED’, page 9.

sjoseph@yrmg.com Former Thornhill politician Peter Shurman is a baby boomer. Yet, he chose to write a book about millennials. “They are a misunderstood generation. My contemporaries think they are useless,” he said. Many from his generation think millennials are “jerks that walk around with cellphones”, he said in a phone interview from Florida. The former Thornhill MPP has penned an e-book about this generation called Millennials: Boom’er Bust or How Gen Y Will Save the World. The book is an offshoot of a blog entry he wrote about millennials. After seeing the entry, a reader suggested Shurman write a book on the topic. So, he did — his first book, which he started working on in February 2015. In his book, Shurman defines millennials as people born roughly between 1978 and 2000. Defining the term millennial can be difficult. Some say millennials are those born between 1978-1998; others say 1980-2000.

Shurman could not help noticing this millennial generation. For the latter part of his career, millennials have surrounded him. He spent more than 20 years in the radio broadcasting business, including as a former radio executive and talk radio host. He went on to work in the world of politics. Shurman represented Thornhill from 2007 to 2013 as a Conservative provincial politician. While working in broadcasting, he was surrounded by millennials. He worked with producers and technical engineers who were millennial age and was impressed by their professionalism, he said. When he was a politician in Thornhill, his staff was also mostly millennials. While that generation has routinely been described in disparaging ways, such as being called “lazy” and “irresponsible”, Shurman’s findings are quite positive. His research uncovers just how optimistic millennials are. “Over 50 per cent are optimistic about the future,” he said, as compared to Shurman’s generation, which is less optimistic. So, how did his own attitude

Former Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman is now an author, penning a book on millennials, who he says are misunderstood. towards millennials change during his research? “It enhanced my respect for them,” he said. He suggests his contemporaries should read his book about millennials, warning that this generation has become powerful. “They are taking charge, going to run things. It is their turn.”

He hopes his book will persuade his peers to take millennials seriously. “I hope it can help convince my peer group to understand people are coming along and taking their place as a leading group in society,” Shurman said. In politics, you meet so many people — children, old people, married people, bachelors, people from other religions and people who are transgender, he said. “That sensitized me to what was going on in our society,“ he said. “I know a little bit about everybody”. Reaction to the book so far has been positive, he said. “Everyone says they have learned something,” he said. One person told him: “I have finally figured out my third kid — now I get it.” Shurman lived in Thornhill from 1983 to 1998. Now 68, he lives in Niagara-onthe-Lake. Shurman is semi-retired and has a son born in 1978. His exit from politics came when he was removed from his position as MPP after a dispute with then Conservative party leader Tim Hudak over a housing allowance he received.

HE’s keynote speaker Shurman is a keynote speaker at an event called Tomorrow’s Race for Talent: Winning Strategies to Attract the Right Workforce to Your Business this Friday, March 4 in Markham. It is a half-day conference designed to meet the needs of employers who want to learn more about hiring and retention strategies. At this free event, Shurman will share his ideas on how boomers and millennials can co-exist and how bridges can be built. The conference runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Edward Village Markham (formerly Delta Markham) at 50 East Valhalla Dr. .The conference is organized by The Workforce Planning Board of York Region & Bradford West Gwillimbury, a not-for-profit, community-based organization working to develop solutions to local labour market needs and issues. NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #2 ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT STUDY Portage Parkway Widening and Easterly Extension to Creditstone Road Part A: Portage Parkway Widening from Applewood Crescent to Jane Street and Part B: Portage Parkway Extension from Jane Street to Creditstone Road THE STUDY The City of Vaughan Transportation Master Plan (TMP) – A New Path (2013) – identified the need to widen Portage Parkway from Applewood Crescent to Jane Street and extend Portage Parkway from Jane Street to Creditstone Road) as a strategic network improvement and in support of development in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. THE PROCESS The TMP – A New Path, having completed Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process, has identified projects which will improve connections to local and regional infrastructure, provide access to future developments, support transit-oriented nodes and corridors, and enhance transit ridership, cycling and walking. The TMP identified the need to widen Portage Parkway to four lanes from Applewood Crescent to Jane Street and establish a new four lane road from Jane Street to Creditstone Road and recommended the project be carried forward to Phases 3 and 4 of the Class EA process. The City is completing the Class EA Study, which establishes the preferred design for the widening, extension and improvements for: • •

PART A*: Portage Parkway Widening from Applewood Crescent to the west side of the Black Creek PART B*: Portage Parkway Extension from the west side of the Black Creek, crossing the Black Creek channel, to Creditstone Road

The Study considers the technical, environmental, socio-economic and financial criteria as the basis for the assessment. The Study, proceeding in two interrelated parts, is being undertaken in accordance with “Schedule C” of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (October 2000, as amended in 2007 & 2011). Separate Environmental Study Reports (ESRs) for Part A and B, the limits of which are undergoing refinement through the process, will be prepared and available for public review and notices issued upon study completion.

Company fined for Concord accident A millwright/engineering company pleaded guilty and has been fined $50,000 because of an incident two years ago when a worker in Concord was injured on a construction site. On March 5, 2014, Western Mechanical Electrical Millwright Services Ltd. was hired to dismantle and replace a steel storage system inside a Vaughan warehouse. The system consisted of ‘sleeper’ beams (hollow steel tubes) laid out on the ground and vertical upright posts welded onto the sleeper beams. At the time of the incident, one worker was welding a 12-ft. upright post in place on a sleeper beam. Other workers were demolishing the older system of racking. To do so, a worker cut loose an upright support using a grinder and a torch, knocking over rows of posts. The worker, who had been welding, was struck by falling posts, weighing more than

2,400 pounds, and was pinned by the weight until a crane was brought in to lift the steel off of the worker, who suffered leg injuries. Preliminary checks by Western Mechanical’s supervisor found the sleepers had been anchored, but a subsequent Ministry of Labour investigation found not all of them were. Court found that Western Mechanical failed to take the reasonable precaution of ensuring sleeper beams were securely anchored prior to upright posts being installed, contrary to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The company pleaded guilty and was fined $50,000 by Justice of the Peace Douglas Clark in Newmarket court on Feb. 12, 2016. In addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge, credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime. — Simone Joseph

Vaughan considers stiffer fines for illegal parking

a.m. and 6 a.m. The fine for parking in a fire route, meanwhile, would jump to $150 from $100. Staff is, however, recommending that the fine for parking within 15 metres of a level railway crossing drop to $50 from $55. Hiking the penalties is expected to generate an extra $197,000 annually for the city’s coffers. Vaughan’s committee of the whole was slated to debate the proposed increases last week. If the committee green-lights the increases, it will go before city council for final approval this month. - Adam Martin-Robbins

The City of Vaughan is considering imposing stiffer fines on those who park illegally. Vaughan bylaw staff is recommending hiking penalties for 30 of the 32 infractions contained in the city’s parking bylaw, with proposed increases ranging from $5 to $50. For instance, the fine for parking on the road longer than three hours between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. is proposed to rise to $40 from $35. Same goes for parking on the road between 2

PUBLIC CONSULTATION – YOU ARE INVITED Consultation with interested stakeholders (public and agencies) is a key component of the study. The first of two Public Information Centres (PICs) for the study was held on November 25, 2015 to present the alternative planning solutions, future conditions, evaluation criteria and design considerations. With consideration for public input, the preferred solution was selected as a combination of alternatives: • • • • •

Travel Demand Management Initiatives being implemented by the City as a separate strategy Alternative Modes of Transportation (e.g., sidewalk, cycling systems) Localized Intersection and Operational Improvements (e.g., traffic signals, turning lanes) Widening Portage Parkway from Applewood Crescent to Jane Street (e.g., 2 to 4 lanes) Extending Portage Parkway from Jane Street crossing the Black Creek channel to Creditstone Road (e.g., new 4 lane roadway)

You are invited to attend the second and final PIC for this study, which is being held to present the assessment of alternative design concepts for the widening and extension of Portage Parkway and preliminary preferred design. The PIC will be an opportunity for the public to review project information and ask questions or discuss comments with members of the project team and is being held on: DATE: Wednesday, March 9, 2016 TIME: 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm (drop-in session) LOCATION: Homewood Suites by Hilton, 618 Applewood Crescent, Vaughan, Ontario For information on study progress and updates, please visit: http://www.vaughan.ca/projects/projects_and_studies/environmental_assessment_studies/Pages/Class-EAStudy-for-Portage-Parkway.aspx CONTACTS If you have any questions/comments and cannot attend the PIC, please contact: Marta Roias, RPP City of Vaughan Project Manager 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive Vaughan, ON L6A 1T1 T: 905-832-8585 Ext. 8026 F: 905-832-6145 E: Marta.Roias@vaughan.ca

Oscar puts Spotlight on good journalism

Offering facts on Mid-East violence

A

s luck would have it, last week I finally saw the movie Spotlight. My timing was perfect, as a few days later, I was pleased to see it win the Academy Awards’ top prize, the Oscar for movie of the year. But I was cheering for more than just the entertainment value of enjoying a good plot and strong character acting. Spotlight is a validation of investigative journalism and the key role media still plays in our modern communities and, indeed, the world. For those who haven’t seen it yet — it’s the true story of a team of investigative journalists at The Boston Globe who dug up the awful truth about sexual abuse by priests of boys and girls on an unbelievable scale — and the frightening lengths to which some in the highest reaches of the Catholic Church went to keep the abuse secret. I’m not spoiling the movie ending, as the facts have already been well publicized. The shame wasn’t confined to 113 priests in the Boston area, but spread its tentacles across the United States, in Canada, Australia and other countries. While my best friend in the darkened theatre no doubt reacted personally to the movie as a devoted Catholic, I reacted to it viscerally as a journalist. Yes, in these days when daily newspapers are closing, an Ontario TV station lays off half its staff just before Christmas, and headlines in all media trumpet that “print is dead” — I find it heartening that the Hollywood industry and moviegoers themselves, found Spotlight to be an important, watershed movie. One review for Spotlight stated that it deserved to be revered in the same league as Citizen Kane and All The President’s Men — reminding the world that dogged determination of reporters who are thwarted at every turn in efforts to uncover the truth should be celebrated for the causes they bring to light and the light they shine on dark secrets.

Marney Beck And I’m proud to remind readers that journalists at your local community papers do the same. Of course, we don’t have a separate investigative journalism “team” as the Boston Globe enjoyed, and we have no reporters at York Region Media named Woodward or Bernstein, but your community newspaper still fulfils a vital role in seeking the truth and trying to find out what readers need to know. On your behalf, a reporter attends town or city council meetings to find out what decisions politicians you elected have taken, and report on actions you, the taxpayers, sometimes disagree with. While our newsrooms don’t win Oscars, we do win our share of journalism awards. Just this month we learned that regional reporter Lisa Queen is a finalist for a provincial award for her three-part series Seniors and Boomers — outlining the contributions they make to society, the services they need to live out their retirement and the caregivers who provide support. That series is one of three considered for Best Feature News series through the Ontario Community News Association. Another reporter, Kim Zarzour, wrote a series of articles on Lyme disease and dangers that lurk in tiny infected ticks in our forests and the havoc they cause people who become infected. Her work is being considered for Best Investigative News story in Ontario. She also earned an award last year for best national news story. So let’s celebrate all journalists for the work they do every day to shine a spotlight on truths we need to know.

Re: Cause of violence omitted, letter by Ali Manji, Feb. 18. Ali Manji states that Palestinian violence against Israel is caused by the settlements and the so-called Gaza blockade as “the largest open air prison on earth.” While I would hope that we could be friends here in Canada, someone has to provide Liberal readers with facts which counter Mr. Manji’s claims. First, there were no West Bank settlements in 1936 during the Arab “revolt,” none in 1948, 1956 or 1967 — all instances when Arab countries launched wars against Israel. After the Six Day War, the declaration of Khartoum stated: “no peace with Israel, no negotiations with Israel, no recognition of Israel.” Much more recently, it was Mahmoud Abbas who refused to negotiate when Israel suspended all West Bank settlement activity for 10 months. It’s hard to “trade land for peace” when the other side refuses because it sounds better in letters to the editors and the United Nations security council to accuse Israel of occupation and thereby continue the narrative that turns Israelis into pariahs in order to prepare for their eventual destruction and to justify violence against them. Final status proposals recognized that there would be land transfers along the Green line, “transferring the same amount of land in Israel to the Palestinian state.” In other words, settlements should not be an issue. However, they are, because — as clearly worded in the Hamas charter — “There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. The initiatives, proposals and international conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.” This is the Hamas that

rules Gaza with an iron fist, launches ten thousand rockets into Israel and digs attack tunnels using concrete that was supposed to rebuild its infrastructure. If this is an “open air prison,” it’s fortunate for Canadians that the prison guards in their penal system aren’t Hamas soldiers. The cause of violence is as simple as this explanation by Hamas: “The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day.” So children are taught hatred through TV shows and encouraged to stab Israelis and to blow themselves up for martyrdom. It also explains why three peace initiatives negotiated into full agreements, were all ultimately rejected.

Anthony Dayton Thornhill

Misleading letter maligns Israel Re: Causes of violence omitted, letter by Ali Manji, Feb. 18. Contrary to Ali Manji, the West Bank settlements are not “illegal”. This is a lie and over-simplification often perpetuated by Palestinian apologists. In fact, Area A and B of the west bank are under Palestinian Authority jurisdiction. There are no settlements being built in these areas. Currently, Area C is under Israeli jurisdiction for security purposes. Moreover, Manji fails to acknowledge that only seven per cent of the Palestinian population lives in Area C. Yasser Arafat agreed to grant Israel this land when he signed the Oslo Accords in 1993. As per UN Resolution 242, land obtained in a defensive war is not “illegal” under international law and it was explicitly stated in the resolution that Israel is not required, under law, to give

up that land. Were it not for the genocidal behaviour of some Palestinian people amongst Israelis and the intransigence of the Palestinian Authority to agree on a peace plan, Israel would have pulled out of the settlements and granted Palestine autonomy a long time ago. Importantly, Israel did give Gaza to the Palestinians, but it was not illegally occupied, as they (Palestinians) were never granted sovereignty, nor were they ever sovereign rulers, so it was never Palestinian land to begin with. Furthermore, under harsh criticism, Israel pulled out 8,500 settlers that were living in Gaza and its entire army to procure peace, but all it got was thousands of Hamas rockets in return. Justifying violence on innocents is inherently abhorrent and reprehensible. The Tibetans and the people of Cyprus, whose lands are occupied by foreign invaders, have not resorted to indiscriminate terrorism and attacks amongst innocents, and yet, where is the international outrage? There is not a peep out of the media for this glaring double-standard —just criticism for Israel’s so-called occupation. Regretfully, the letter writer’s attempt to malign Israel has only served to distort the truth and mislead Liberal readers.

That same year, she received the inaugural Human Dignity Award from the European Parliament. Nemat was also honoured with the Morris Abram Human Rights Award from UN Watch in Switzerland in 2014. Her second book, After Tehran: A Life Reclaimed, was published in 2010. Nemat will share her story of faith, survival and forgiveness as a testament to the power of love in the face of evil and injustice at the conference being held at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts at 10268 Yonge St. The conference will also feature speaker Amber Bowman, a firefighter with the Central York Fire Department and a 16-time gold medal winner in the Fire Combat Challenge. The head of school at Leo Baeck Jewish Day School says he is “appalled to read the news,” that the school’s former director, David Prashker, has been charged in connection with child pornography offences in California. “We’ve had no contact with Mr. Prashker since we parted ways in 2008,” said Eric Petersiel, who has been Leo Baeck’s head of school for seven years. Prashker resigned as director of Leo Baeck in 2008 over graphic poems on his website. Last week, the district attorney of Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay area charged David Prashker, 60, with possession of child pornography and attempting to destroy evidence. Investigators had gone to search Prashker’s California home Feb. 18. When they arrived, Prashker allegedly ran to the back of the house and threw a laptop out of a window. Forensic examiners later found evidence of child pornography on the laptop, according to the district attorney’s office. Prashker recently worked as a substitute teacher at two private schools in Contra Costa, the district attorney said. He has also worked at schools in London and Miami. Prashker was director of Leo Baeck Jewish Day School, a kindergarten-to-Grade 8 pri-

vate school with campuses in Thornhill and Toronto, from 2004 to 2008. He resigned in March 2008, after six poems he had written and posted to his personal website were circulated to parents in an anonymous email. The poems included sexual imagery and profane language. One poem began with the line “The first act of killing is the hardest” and ended with “the second time is remarkably straightforward”. Prashker was scheduled to appear in court in Martinez, Calif. Feb. 23. — with files from The Toronto Star

Temple Har Zion launches its Syrian refugee project this Sunday, March 6 at 7 p.m. in collaboration with its neighbour, the Imam Mahdi Islamic Centre. The launch event will include a speech by Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum. Members of the reform Thornhill synagogue Temple Har Zion will work with JIAS Toronto (Jewish Immigrant Aid Services) to welcome Syrian refugees over the coming year and help them settle in to life in Canada. The fundraising campaign ends Feb. 28, 2017. Temple Har Zion is raising funds with the goal of sponsoring up to two refugee families in 2016. The synagogue aims to fundraise between $30,000 and $60,000 by the end of April. This fundraising will allow the synagogue to start the sponsorship process through JIAS Toronto in time for one or two families to arrive in September. The refugee project also aims to gather gifts and solicit volunteer support to sponsor one or two refugee families. Speakers at Sunday’s event will include the presidents of both Temple Har Zion and the Imam Mahdi Islamic Centre. Rabbi Cory Weiss and Imam Hoseini will both recite prayers and give opening remarks. The event will include a presentation on the synagogue’s refugee project and a question-and-answer period. People from all backgrounds, communi-

ties, religions and geographies are encouraged to participate in this cause. Har Zion is located at 7360 Bayview Ave. in Markham. For details, go to www.templeharzion.com or www.facebook.com/imammahdi.ca or send an email to refugeeproject@templeharzion.com — Simone Joseph

Syrian refugees settling into new life On the first day of school, a little girl hid under a desk when the school bell rang. A little boy wouldn’t wear boots because the “bad man,” the man who killed his brother, wore boots. Along with helping recently arrived refugees open bank accounts, get medical coverage, go to school, get jobs and maneuver the grocery aisle, sponsors also have to help these new residents overcome some of the fears that made them leave their home countries. About 50 people attended a meeting at the Bayview Hill Community Centre on Saturday, hosted by Richmond Hill MP Majid Jowhari. The meeting provided an update on Syrians coming to Canada, as well as an opportunity for private sponsors to network. There are now 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada, 5,000 sponsored by the federal government. The others are privately sponsored, said Carmel Whelton, a volunteer for MarkhamStouffville MP Jane Philpott. - Sandra Bolan

By DAVID LI

It’s been about a year and half since Thornhill resident Rong Li suffered a serious stroke that put him in the intensive care unit for close to a month. In that time, the 73-year-old’s recovery journey has taught his family members a lot about the importance of having patience and has also educated them on the serious implications of a stroke. In April of 2014, Li experienced dizziness and numbness in the left side of his body while working part-time downtown as a cook and was taken to Toronto General Hospital. By the next morning, pneumonia had filled his lungs and his condition worsened to the point where the father of three was transferred to intensive care and placed on a ventilator.

FIRST TO ARRIVE TO HELP FATHER “I only had a general idea that a stroke is dangerous and needs to be treated immediately for chance of fast recovery,” said his youngest daughter, Lindie Li, the first family member to arrive at her father’s workplace and accompanied him to the emergency room. According to a 2013 report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, an estimated 50,000 strokes are suffered by people in Canada each year. A stroke occurs when there are problems with the flow of blood to the brain, which results in a sudden loss of brain function. Although a stroke can happen to anyone at any age, a majority of strokes occur in people over the age of 65. After a month spent in intensive care, Li’s condition had stabilized and he was transfered to the general medicine floor within the hospital. While no longer in intensive care, he still faced serious health challenges, including being dependant on oxygen supplied through a trach and a feeding tube, because of a condition known as dysphagia — anoth-

er complication from the stroke that severely impaired his ability to eat. He continued to progress and in September of 2014 — about five months after being admitted to Toronto General Hospital — he was transferred to Baycrest Complex Continuing Care. Through the dedication of the medical staff at Baycrest, Li’s condition improved to the point where his doctors determined the trach to supply oxygen was no longer required.

‘LONG WAY TO GO’ “My dad has come a long way since he had the stroke, but he still has a long way to go in his recovery. We are just going to have to be patient and hope in time he can recover some more of the physical functions he has lost,” added his youngest daughter. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says approximately 315,000 Canadians — and their families — are living with the effects of stroke. Li’s eldest daughter, Wen Ying Lui, says her father’s stroke and his recovery journey has been an eye-opening experience. “Since my dad’s stroke, I’ve read up on how to care for patients who are recovering from a stroke, and I’ve learned that even though your loved ones may never recover 100 per cent of their functions, we have to be understanding with them and give them lots of encouragement,” she said. “I’ve also learned the significance of making contributions to agencies like the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the importance of the work they do,” Lui continued. Despite the family stress, she identified the silver lining from his health challenges. “My dad’s stroke has brought us all even closer and it’s also taught us a lot about patience and being supportive to each other. Looking at the big picture, I’d say, as a family, we’re all wiser and a bit stronger because of what’s happened.” David Li is a Thornhill freelance writer.

states “I can do this for you if you sign the contract today.” If you are wary of a contractor’s credibility, contact the Better Business Bureau to learn if they have been reported for shoddy work or bad business practices. Know exactly what you want, before entering into a contract or finalizing your plans. Be sure of all costs, and make sure the specifications are outlined in full on the contract to avoid misunderstandings. Define brands, model numbers, manufacturers, colours and any other descriptive language. Do not allow substitutions without your consent. Maintain control of your project. If a contractor tells you they can’t get an item, check availability yourself. Use your own judgement being aware of substitutions and extras. For a successful home renovation, research potential contractors thoroughly, establish clear specifications, and stick to your plan.

Most homeowners, no matter how proficient in home improvements they are, will look to hire a contractor at some point in time. Major remodelling projects rarely go as planned, but bringing in the right people can ensure any bumps in the road are smoothed over as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. Consider these guidelines for a successful remodelling project: Start with recommendations from others. Look to people you trust for recommendations in hiring a contractor. If the contractor you approach is not available, ask for recommendations via their network of business relationships. Good contractors preserve their reputation by working with good subcontractors, so it’s worthwhile to ask for referrals. Meet with at least three different contractors before choosing one. Use common sense and never allow yourself to be persuaded into a commitment. Beware of pressure tactics and turn away anyone who

Personal Prayer To The Holy Spirit

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. Orville Hughes put his heart into everything By Brea Bartholet

bbartholet@yrmg.com

H

e was a man who wore many hats. Whether it was working on the farm, serving as one of Simcoe County’s wardens, a reeve for West Gwillimbury or spending time with his family, Orville Hughes always put his heart and soul into everything he did. Born Feb. 27, 1921, Hughes spent most of his childhood living life on his family farm in Dunkerron, just south of Bond Head, with his parents and two siblings, Irma and Roy. Hughes never strayed far from farm work, which maintained itself as a main income for him throughout most of his life. Unfortunately, his parents died young, forcing Hughes to establish a life of his own at the age of 20. But things began to look up when Hughes married the love of his life, Jean, in 1946. The couple happily welcomed four children — Jim, Brian, Marjorie and Edie — creating a loving environment at the farmhouse on Line 8 in West Gwillimbury, previously owned by Jean’s parents. Hughes spent countless hours tending to the family business. Son Brian says his fondest memories of his father go back to their days spent together on that very farm.

Lstories ife

“We worked together all our life. Even when I bought the farm in 1976 and my parents moved, he would come by to help out,” he said. “He was still active with farming, probably until he was close to 80 years old.” Aside from dedicating time to the farm, Hughes also had a keen interest in local politics and community service. In 1954, Hughes became a part of the local school board, while also maintaining the position of reeve of West Gwillimbury and, shortly thereafter, deputy reeve. In the midst of discovering what other things the growing community had to offer, Hughes eventually found himself intrigued with the Bradford Masonic Lodge and its long history. Many members saw Hughes as a true leader and, in 1975, he was designated as a Master for one term. In 2012, he received his 50th anniversary pin with the lodge. The following year, he switched gears, serving a oneyear term as warden for Simcoe County. Hughes also filled other positions throughout Simcoe County, including chairperson of the Plowing March in Barrie in 1981 and serving as a committee member in 1985 after a tornado ripped through the Holland Marsh, offering his help to rebuild what had

been lost. The list of Hughes’ accomplishments go on and on. In their later years, Hughes and Jean settled into a condo in Bradford West Gwillimbury’s downtown core in 1986, where the two spent quality time together until Jean passed away in January 2014. Daughter Marjorie recalled her father’s true resilience and commitment to his family, no matter how involved in community matters he became. “(Some) of the memories that I have best of my father are the many gatherings that we would have at our home. There was always a card game going on or a group of friends over for a special event,” she said. “My father worked very hard and I never remember him losing his temper at anyone during his political career or on the farm. He was always willing to listen to all sides of a problem and offer his opinion when asked.” Two years after his wife’s death, Hughes passed away peacefully at Kingsmere in Alliston on Jan. 31. Though the loss of her father is still relatively fresh, Marjorie says she will always appreciate the life he and her mother gave the family. “His accomplishments and anything that he may have gained in his life were done for his family. I am so very proud to say that I am his daughter.”

Celebrate a life well lived!

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

Orville Hughes
