Working poor increasing in York Region BY LISA QUEEN
lqueen@yrmg.com
The growing number of working poor comes as no surprise to the executive director of York Region’s Food Network. “Of course it’s worrisome and we’ve been ignoring it long enough,” Joan Stonehocker said. “I think what we’re seeing from the food end of things is more and
more people are struggling to eat because they are spending more and more on housing. Affordable housing is not getting to the people who need it the most.” Stonehocker was reacting to a new report coming to regional council Sept. 22 on the increasing number of working poor in the region. “For some, having a job is not
enough to pull them out of low income and they can face challenges in making ends meet,” the report by the region’s community and health services department stated. It traces trends from 2006 to 2012 based on information from Statistics Canada’s 2006 and 2012 income tax data. In 2012, 42,930 of residents aged
18 to 64, or 8 per cent, were classified as the working poor. That was up from 31,270, or 6.6 per cent, of that age group in 2002. The region’s working poor are aging, the report said. Residents 30 to 44 years old were the largest age group among the working poor in York Region in both 2006 and 2012. However, the See ‘REGION’S’, page 8.

York man hopes he can move out of basement by 30 At 24, Nick DeRyck has saved $12,000 towards a future home of his own BY LISA QUEEN
A
lqueen@yrmg.com
t 24, Nick DeRyck has done everything anyone could expect of him as a young adult. After graduating from Newmarket’s Huron Heights Secondary School, he completed a two-year police foundations course, choosing Seneca College’s nearby King campus, in part so he could live at home to save on expenses. While he plans on a career as a police officer, he now works at Cardinal Golf Club in King for his third season, recently wrapped a part-time summer job with a beer company and will once again get a job for the winter, hopefully this time something more careeroriented than the snowplowing jobs he’s had in the past. While he has a couple of hobbies that cost him money — buying guitars, purchasing car parts for his 1986 Firebird and playing goalie on a hockey team — DeRyck has saved about $12,000 towards buying a home. But he wonders if he’ll ever have enough money to move out of the basement of his parents’ semi-detached house, for which he pays $400 a month in rent. While he gets along well with his parents and two siblings, DeRyck is hoping his frugal lifestyle will allow him to buy his own home by the time he turns 30.
‘KIND OF DISCOURAGING’ “I don’t mind (living at home) at the moment, but I definitely don’t want it to be a lifelong thing,” he said while sitting at the family’s kitchen table. “It’s kind of discouraging that the prices are getting ridiculously high. Here in Newmarket, I think the lowest house would probably be, if you’re lucky, around $600,000.” While DeRyck knows past generations had to save and work hard to get their footing in life, he feels today’s sky-high housing market makes it that much more daunting for today’s young people. “The down-payments are ridiculous amounts of money now. Even to get your foot in the door is extremely hard. It just makes you feel like it’s going take forever,” he said. He is left wondering how far away he will have to move to afford a home. ‘OPPORTUNITIES NOT THERE’ DeRyck is far from alone, according to Bradford mortgage broker James McNeill with Centum Mortgage Professionals Corp. “The opportunities are not there. When I graduated school or even when I was going to university, I could work (at a well-paying
need a household income of $165,000. For a semi-detached home, with an average price of $661,760, your household income needs to be a minimum of $117,860. The average priced $603,900 townhouse requires a household income of $108,370. You need a household income of $74,827 to buy a condo, which costs an average of $406,845. For DeRyck, even staying in Newmarket, one of the less expensive communities in York Region, is doubtful at best.

COMPARISONS ACROSS YORK With the average cost of a home being $761,000, he would need a household income of $134,600 and could expect mortgage payments of $2,725. By comparison, the average price of buying a home in Aurora is $941,000, requiring a household income of $162,740, while in Markham it is $960,100, making a minimum household income of $161,660 necessary,. In Richmond Hill, the average price is almost $1.07 million, necessitating a household income of $179,550, while Vaughan’s average price of $921,700 requires a household income of $156,730 and WhitchurchStouffville’s average price of $920,460 requires a household income of $157,680.
TIPS FOR BUYING A HOME McNeill offered a number of tips for young people considering buying a house: • You can buy a house for as little as 5 per cent down, however the non-traditional mortgage must be insured by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp. • Budget properly.Your monthly housing costs should not be more than 32 per cent of your gross monthly income and your entire debt load should not be more than 40 per cent of your gross monthly income. • Save money. Sure, the latest tech toy may look good, but keep your eyes on your long-term goal of home ownership. For example, consider living at home during post-secondary years and even after you graduate. • Keep debt to a minimum. Susie Kockerscheidt/ Metroland • Maintain a good credit rating. Despite his education, holding down a job and saving money, Newmarket’s Nick DeRyck • Consider buying outside the GTA. wonders when he will be able to afford to move out of his parents’ home and get a place of • Consider employment outside the GTA where his own. there are lower housing costs. • Lenders will generally want to see you have two A report released last month by TheRedfactory job) and earn enough to move out of years’ employment history before approving you the house. House prices? Terrible, right?
Empty recycling bins by mailbox
W
hat do you think of today’s house prices? The answer you might have if you’re a politician, “policy analyst” or parent of twentysomethings is to be outraged simple townhouses are exceeding the half-a-million-dollar mark. “Did you see how much they’re asking for that place? Ridiculous!” you hear a neighbour say, although he or she has a glint in their eye and the calculator is clicking in their head about what their place might fetch some day. The Toronto Real Estate Board says as of September the average price of a detached home in York now exceeds $1.2 million. Wow! So there’s definitely that sentiment that when someone puts a house up for sale, everyone on the street hopes they get the max, there is a bidding war, or a secretive, wealthy person in a foreign land desperate to get their wealth into a safe haven like Canada, will buy the place sight unseen, well over asking price. Which all sounds dandy, except that you have to think it is all going to end badly some day, when our own kids are forced to move to Wawa to find a home they can afford. (Wawa is a nice place — I lived there for a year — a good place to raise kids, they say — you just have to accept that it is very close to fishing and snowmobile trails and far from the ROM, Roy Thomson Hall, the ACC, etc.) Or when businesses in the GTA or Vancouver cannot attract workers because workers can’t afford to live there. Which might drive up wages in the long run, sure. But it might also precipitate an exodus of businesses from large urban centres when, in this digital age, where you work doesn’t matter so much. Of course, there’s the other phenomenon, felt closer to home, and one you hear about, the “kids” who never move away. Which will have a broader societal impact as our beloved sons and daughters spend their 20s and then 30s, single and living in mom and dad’s basement, playing video games or watching Netflix and forever raiding the snack supply as he or she saves up for the required
Bernie O’Neill downpayment that gets bigger every year. They dream the parents will just leave the family home to them, or sell it and “lend” them the huge downpayment dough. But who can sell when everything out there to buy costs so much? So while it may be great for some — homeowners who have built up a lot of equity and are at an age where they could sell and downsize or sell and move to some town that is much cheaper — it could be crippling for others. An infusion of wealth into our economy, sure. But ... A lot of the GTA demand is due to normal growth and lack of supply. With B.C. clamping down on foreign buying, it will add to demand here. Where does it end? Think of it this way — there’s suddenly huge demand for Ontario’s farm products. It’s wonderful at first. Prices shoot up and our grocers and farmers get rich! Great! Until a bunch of us can’t afford to buy food at the new higher prices — and end up at the food bank. Mind you, the great thing about real estate is that it is a “real” asset. Unlike a field of corn, which you cannot really live in (Field of Dreams excepted) you get to live in a house, walk around in your bare feet, let the dog scratch up the hardwood floor, occasionally burn dinner and have the place fill with smoke — because you got distracted when the washing machine overflowed — and someone still wants to give you a million dollars for it! Amazing! For now, I just try to think of our place as “home sweet home,” where the dog comes running to greet me at the end of the day, and not as an investment I will need to make some high-stakes and lifechanging decision about, down the road. I sleep better that way.
Re: Does charging people to recycle get desired results? Column by Bernie O’Neill, Sept. 1. I wholeheartedly agree with this column. We try to keep our city clean, but are going about it in the wrong way. We live directly across from a mailbox and someone had kindly put a blue box beside it to catch all the unwanted mail. It was overflowing until my husband brought the blue box out to the curbside every week for pickup and then put it back beside the mailbox. It seems that the garbage/ recycling collectors are now working to rule and will now not empty a blue box unless it is in front of a house. The box is often overflowing and in a strong wind the papers get blown off all over the street. So now my husband drags the blue box across the road to the curb at the front of our house in order for the garbage men to empty it. I spoke with the waste department and it seems that they only pick up blue boxes in front of houses.
Most people just throw away the unwanted “junk” mail beside the mailbox and this creates a disgusting mess. Surely it is no greater effort for the collectors to empty a blue box at the curb in front of a mailbox as it is to empty to the same blue box on the other side of the street, as they drive past on their collection day. For the amount of taxes we pay, this should be included in their job description.

We should all pitch in Re: Illegal dumping a ‘big problem’ in Vaughan, Aug. 25. I, too, read the article on homeowners in Vaughan illegally dumping their garbage and I have a very different take on it. I give lots and lots of kudos to Duane Booth for getting himself involved. He is trying to clean up Vaughan, but of course he cannot do that by himself. If everyone loves their community and were to pick up one or two pieces of trash a day, the streets would look so much better. We will never be able to convince or deter the hom-

Take lesson from others Re: Let’s try harder to fight litter problem, yorkregion.com. I was in Cape Breton last month on a golf trip, and I see they give five cents per water bottle and can if you return the empties. I was surprised I didn’t see many cans and water bottles anywhere. It might be something to think about if Vaughan can accommodate this recycling idea. Cape Breton also uses clear garbage bags: if there is something in there that shouldn’t be they will ticket you on the spot — they are really cracking down on this problem. It’s a start in the right direction.

Thornhill author unveils first work of fiction By simone joseph
sjoseph@yrmg.com
Why does Mendel, the much-loved pharmacist, feel compelled to sin right before Yom Kippur, the holiday of atonement? The answer and this fable is taken from a collection of short stories about Jewish immigrants who settled in North America after the Second World War, called A Calendar of Northern Fables, by John Syrtash. Syrtash, a lawyer by profession, launched his book, his first work of fiction, in Thornhill Sept. 6. at the BATY Synagogue. Fables in the book follow many of the Jewish holidays and poke fun at the lifestyle, rituals and mythologies brought over from “the old country”. The book takes readers inside the homes and synagogues of observant Jews and explains some of the customs fol-
lowed by this community. What is the reason for the knotted strings dangling from the hips of religious men? How do observant young people date without ever touching each other? A Calendar of Northern Fables is a look at Jewish immigrants in the 1950s and the lives of their descendants today. “Although a lawyer by profession, Syrtash has a penchant for creating vivid images of the modern Jewish shtetl,” says Rabbi Daniel Korobkin of Thornhill’s Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto, in a testimonial from the book’s media kit. “Reminiscent of the style of Sholem Aleichem, John Syrtash recreates for the reader a world circumscribed by Toronto’s Jewish community — a world of observant Jewry with its beliefs, its traditions and its foibles. Told with empathy and gentle humour, Syrtash’s stories introduce the reader to Yiddish expressions, Jewish history, wise rabbis and adoring but not always wise parents, and the need to celebrate each day,” says author Joan O’Callaghan, an English professor at the University of Toronto, in the media kit. This trend was likely driven by York Region’s overall aging profile and possibly the impact of the 2008-09 recession on older workers who lost jobs and found it difficult to find new jobs at similar rates of pay as their old jobs. Not surprisingly, the majority of the region’s working poor live in the more dense-

The report said the increase in working poor likely reflects economic and labour trends across the Greater Toronto Area such as: • A decline in the manufacturing sector, which historically provided stable jobs not requiring postsecondary education, • A hollowing out of middle-level jobs in the goods and service sectors, offset by growth in higher-pay knowledge sector jobs and lower-pay service sector entry-level jobs • Fewer opportunities to advance within companies and more out-sourcing or contracting out services.

Providing the compassionate and professional services the community deserves for over 130 years.
On Sunday, Sept. 18 people from across the country will gather in their respective communities to take part in the Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research. The race is accessible to everybody with no entry fee, no minimum pledge and a noncompetitive atmosphere. Participants can run, walk, blade or bike. Here are five things to know about the Terry Fox Run this year. - Simon Martin
1
The Terry Fox Run takes place in more than 9,000 communities across Canada. York Region has 11 locations for the run including Georgina, East Gwillimbury, King City, Newmarket, Aurora, Stouffville, Oak Ridges, Richmond Hill, Woodbridge, Markham-Unionville and Thornhill. If you want to find out more information about your local run, visit www.terryfox.org/Run/Find_A_Runsite
2
Millions of students from across the country also get involved through their schools, which host the Terry Fox School run every year. Terry Fox ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days during his 3,339-mile Marathon of Hope. Some schools try to equal that mark through a collective effort of its student body. More than three million students and educators took part in the first national school run day in 2005. A record $45 million was raised that year. This year’s suggested school date is Sept. 29.
3
In 1981, the first Terry Fox Run was held at more than 760 sites in Canada and around the world. The event attracted 300,000 participants and raised $3.5 million. Thirty-six years later, the run has raised more than $700 million for cancer research.
4 5
There are 14 schools in Canada named after Terry Fox, including Terry Fox Public School in Newmarket. There are 15 roads in Canada named after Fox, including Terry Fox Street in Markham. A nine-foot Terry Fox statue is located in Thunder Bay where Fox’s run ended Sept. 1, 1980. Another statue is located in Richmond Hill at Ransom Park on Yonge Street, that he ran past in his original run. When Terry Fox finally stopped running in Thunder Bay, he left this message for Canadians in his media conference. “That’s the thing about cancer. I’m not the only one, it happens all the time to people. I’m not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It’ll inspire more people… I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try. When I started this run, I said that if we all gave $1, we’d have $22 million for cancer research, and I don’t care, man, there’s no reason that isn’t possible. No reason.”
This weekend, Thornhill will be remembering the man who ran a marathon every day during his quest to cross Canada and raise money to fight cancer. The Terry Fox Run is Sunday, Sept. 18. The route is bicycle, stroller and rollerblade accessible and partially wheelchair accessible. Dogs must be on a leash. You can run or walk 2, 5, or 10 k.m. The fundraiser takes place at Thornlea Secondary School’s track, 8075 Bayview Ave. in Thornhill. There’s a complimentary breakfast, barbecue lunch, and water stations provided. - Simone Joseph

Markham Reads program celebrates creativity with Let the Elephants Run BY AMANDA PERSICO
apersico@yrmg.com
Everyone is creative; you just need to work at it. That’s the message behind this year’s Markham Reads program hosted by the Markham Public Library. The program, in its fifth year, aims to engage and bring the community together in celebration of learning, said community librarian for creative expression, Ange Friesen. “The library is about learning,” she said. “This is an opportunity to engage readers in a conversation.” This is the first year for the program under the Markham Reads banner. Previously the program was called One Book One Markham. “We wanted to shift the focus to a community action,” Friesen said. “Reading can be done all year. You can have more conversation with ‘What are you reading now?’” This year’s choice is Let the Elephants Run
by David Usher, an exploration of the creative potential in everyone. “The book describes creativity like a muscle that needs to be exercised,” Friesen said. “As adults, we’ve lost the creativity we had as a child. Creativity needs to be practised.” There are more than 100 copies within the city’s library system and readers can also download the e-book through the library. Nestled within the pages of the national best-seller are several activities to help boost and inspire creativity. When checking out the book, readers are also given a creativity workbook, which is also available on the library’s website. Here, library staff have curated creative actions found in the book and added several unique-to-Markham challenges, including a photo challenge and establishing a Creative Mantra. “Our’s is, ‘I am a creative force to be reckoned with’,” Friesen said. “This is something

October, with the second month of the program filled with events that explore creativity. One such event is the How to Build a Blanket Fort workshop, hosted by Crazy Dames, a collaboration of visual art and community and urban planning. Other events include and art social and painting workshop, music workshop and silent group reading. “We often lose that creativity we had as kids,” Friesen said. “We need to bring that home.” Each year, the Markham Public Library hosts a series of events and workshops designed to engage readers with #MarkhamReads main title themes and ideas. Thornhill Village Festival turns 40 this weekend BY SIMONE Joseph
sjoseph@yrmg.com
Turning 40 is a major event in a person’s life; so too is it a major landmark in the life of a community festival. The Thornhill Village Festival turns 40 this year. The fun is set for this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18, and will be held on both sides of Thornhill, in the cities of Markham and Vaughan. Thornhill Summit Drive will feature midway rides. There will also be local musicians, a kids’ area, activities for teens, the King’s Royal Yorkers, an art walk, a baking competition, Best Buds (dog costume) contest, community booths, a variety of food and a beer garden. On Saturday, the festival will be held on the Markham side of Thornhill, while on Sunday, it will be on the Vaughan side. On the Markham side of Yonge Street, organizers are using four streets for the festival but they are not main arteries. They include: Colborne Street, Church Lane, Elizabeth Street and Thornhill Summit Drive. Both Centre Street on the Vaughan side and John Street on the Markham side will be open to traffic all day. In its 40-year history, this festival has had its share of highs and lows, including bad weather and poor or insufficient funding. The festival was first organized back in 1977 to bring the two parts of the politically divided community together and use Yonge Street as a unifyer rather than as a divider.
Back in 2010, the festival was cancelled because of a scheduling conflict as the event was scheduled to take place during the key Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Part of this year’s event is a Sunday Thornhill Music Festival at the Thornhill Park near the Thornhill Outdoor Pool in the Center Street and Yonge Street area on the Vaughan side. This year’s entertainers will include headliner Pop Cherry who has performed at Massey Hall, Mayfly’s Landing and Man Made Forest, who have just completed an east coast tour of Canada together in support of their new CDs. Local bands, several of which are based out of Thornhill, will be performing: Rockwell, The Ben Crosby Band, The Cunninghams, The King Beez, Happy Jack and the Rainmakers, Castro Radio, Music Box, Pulse in Tempo, The Generations, TREO, and Talking In Our Sleep. The Sound Rehearsal studios are sponsoring a VIP area for volunteers, organizers, musicians, media and select dignitaries. About 10 or 12 groups will perform Sunday on two stages — a City of Vaughan stage and a smaller one. The Thornhill Village Festival is organized entirely by a community volunteer committee. Go to thornhillhistoric.org/ for more information on this society.

New building to save York Region $26 million over 30 years BY LISA QUEEN
lqueen@yrmg.com
York Region should save almost $1 million a year over three decades once the new Annex administrative centre is built in Newmarket, corporate services commissioner, Dino Basso, says. Construction of the new $212.8 million building, at Yonge and Eagle streets, adjacent to the regional headquarters, will begin in early 2017 and is expected to take four years to complete.
Doane House Hospice will remain at the corner of Yonge and Eagle. The Annex will consolidate a number of services, including public health clinics, social services, Ontario Works, housing services, provincial offences courts, the York Small Business Enterprise Centre and Access York customer service, under one roof. Housing the services in the Annex will save the region $26 million over 30 years by consolidat-
ing a variety of satellite locations throughout Newmarket, rather than continuing to lease or invest in aging facilities, Basso said Leases at the Tannery Mall at 465 Davis Dr., 520 Cane Pkwy. and 1091 Gorham St. will end when staff from those locations move into the Annex in 2020. The region is still determining the future use of its leased location at 17310 Yonge St. once the Annex opens. Meanwhile, the region is also
determining the future use of properties it owns at 22 Prospect St., 62 Bayview Pkwy., 194 and 55 Eagle St. and the Gates of York plaza at 17310 Yonge. WZMH Architects designed the building and it will be constructed by a builder to be determined after the tender closes in September. In the spring of 2015, 10 months after council endorsed a previous decision to build the Annex adjacent to the regional headquarters, two councillors tried to have the
project relocated. Markham Councillor Jim Jones and Vaughan Councillor Michael Di Biase argued the building should be constructed at Yonge and Hwy. 7, where Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan intersect, because it would serve more people in the more densely populated south part of the region. A few weeks later, they abandoned the idea, saying there was no appetite around the council table to change the location.

A controversial condo project will be discussed this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the SpringFarm Ratepayers Annual General Meeting. RioCan presented its plan to develop the Sobeys plaza, formally known as SpringFarm Marketplace, at a packed meeting several months ago at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre in Thornhill. At that point, the plan included building an 18-storey condo with retail and a stacked townhouse block. RioCan said it wanted to create an upgraded, walkable shopping community. Since then, two storeys have been added to the plan. Back in May 2016, Councillor Alan Shefman told The Liberal residents had been contacting him daily, asking what is happening with the project and saying they are not in favour of it, he said. The ratepayers association has circulated a petition opposed to the re-development plan. The association has invited RioCan to speak at its annual general meeting, but president Pam Taraday-Levy does not know whether a representative from the company will attend and speak. To contact the association, e-mail springfarmra@gmail.com - Simone Joseph

|The Thornhill Liberal | Thursday, September 15, 2016
With the new school year and more time spent inside, autumn is the perfect time to make small updates to your home’s decor. Plus, getting your home ready now will save you time down the line letting you focus on holiday entertaining. Fall decor features the warm colours of falling leaves and cozy accessories. Find something you love for your home with these quick tips for a seasonal update that’ll last you throughout the winter. 1. Refresh your white. After a long summer, your bright white walls may be looking worse for wear. Get your home ready for the holidays by swapping a bright white for a soft white such as Coconut Sugar (PF 60) by Para Paints. 2. Cozy up to some comforting layers. Take your space to the next level by integrating darker shades of navy, brown or black. Popular options include dark denim, slate, indigo and grey-blacks. This will not only add dimension to your space but it will create a cozy fall feel. 3. Embrace fall fabrics. Swap out iconic summer textiles like cool cotton and linen for luxurious velvets and thicker textures such as wool, plaid and silk that’ll warm up interiors as it gets colder

The Thornhill Reds captured the inaugural Greater Toronto Baseball League/Central Ontario Baseball Association senior championship with a 7-0 win over the Erindale Cardinals in the deciding game of their best-of-three series at Etobicoke Centennial Park, Sunday. Reds’ starting pitcher Chadwick Cameron went the distance to earn the win, while Kris Fielding ignited the offence with a home run. Buoyed by Sean Sutton’s four hits and three from Russell McGibbon, the Reds took the first game 6-4 Saturday. Mitch Sutton tossed six innings and allowed just two earned runs for the win, while Eric Wakeman recorded the save. Erindale evened the series with a 4-1 win in the second game later that day. Jacob Hillier collected three hits for Thornhill. Josh Appel took the loss. — Michael Hayakawa

Claude Labuschagne wakes up thinking about dance, dances all day and goes to bed thinking about — you guessed it: dance. Sometimes, his mother needs to remind him that tapping on the third floor of their home at midnight is not great for her sleep. Claude, 14, is a Grade 10 student at Thornhill’s Westmount Collegiate Institute. He is in the Westmount Arts program. He dances at Dance Surge in Thornhill in the school’s full-time competitive program. Claude dances every day, even over the summer when others are taking time off. “He never rests and always sets himself short-term goals to become a better dancer,”
his mother Monica Labuschagne says. Since he was a little boy, Claude loved watching his sister dance. He was always his sister’s biggest supporter. Then, at the age of 12 he decided to give dancing a shot himself and before long, he was hooked. Claude was chosen out of hundreds of dancers to be part of the Canadian national dance team competing in the IDO World Tap Dance Championships 2016 (IDO stands for International Dance Organization), which runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. in Riesa, Germany. To get to the competition in Germany, he needs to raise $3,500. Click online on his Gofundme account at https://www. gofundme.com/HelpClaudeGermany for more information on how to support him.
Westmount Collegiate student Claude Labuschange, 14, loves to dance and was selected to a Canadian national dance team, competing in Germany this fall.

NEITZERT, Robert The much loved Robert “Ribsy” Neitzert completed his journey on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 8 p.m., surrounded by his parents and siblings. The life-loving and proud uncle Robert will be deeply missed by his parents, Gisela and Fred Neitzert, his siblings, Frank, Monica, Christina and Tanya, his siblings in-law Martha, Donovan, Martin and James, his nieces and nephews Daniel, Ehren, Oliver, Charlotte, Rachel, Mia, Nicholas and Chloé and his amazing caregivers and friends. Robert was born in 1960 with Down Syndrome. Despite the contemporary doctor recommendation of institutionalization, his parents insisted on joining the newer movement of home care and integration. As a result, Robert was raised as part of his loving family, graduated from high school, worked, participated in community life, camped and travelled extensively. He will be fondly remembered for his loving spirit, his independence, his dependability, his love of Anne Murray, and his unique outlook on life. A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on October 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Christ the King-Dietrich Bonhoeffer Lutheran Church at 189 Baythorn Drive, Thornhill, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Community Living Newmarket/ Aurora district (www.clnad.com) who provided exceptional support and care over the years.
