Structural Engineering Our history of involvement with Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) projects has given us in-depth knowledge of OBO design standards. Protective Design Thornton Tomasetti has provided protective design services for more than 60 years. Our use of advanced analytical methods to develop cost-effective measures that provide protection without compromising the aesthetic ideals that characterize great structures has earned us a reputation as the premier provider of protective design services. These analytical methods, combined with our knowledge of the OBO Physical Security Detail Handbook and test data from vehicular-impact experiments, enable us to design barrier systems that blend seamlessly into any facility’s site planning, layout and architecture.
Progressive Collapse Prevention The failure of a single structural element can sometimes cause a devastating chain-reaction collapse. We prevent progressive collapse by carefully engineering structural elements to maximize survivability, even when key elements are damaged. We don’t merely apply standard or conventional solutions; we seek the most appropriate option for each project – one that meets or exceeds security criteria while remaining sensitive to the building’s materials, geometry, construction budget, site constraints and architectural objectives.
Façade Design and Hardening In collaboration with design teams, we develop façade systems that mitigate hazards and meet OBO’s blast, forced-entry and ballisticresistance requirements. We guide project stakeholders through a wide array of options and customize the design for each facility to meet budgetary, environmental, aesthetic and performance goals.
Sustainability We collaborate with designers to integrate green solutions into the planning, design, construction and operation of buildings to reduce their environmental impact. Our services include sustainable design strategies, energy analysis, green building certification consulting, and sustainability analysis and upgrades of existing structures.

Thornton Tomasetti & the Department of State – A Shared History Thornton Tomasetti designed its first U.S. embassy facility – the Tokyo embassy staff residence – in 1952. Since then, our design partners have ranged from Raymond and Rado, Walter Gropius and I. M. Pei to the celebrated designers of today. Following the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, we developed engineering guidelines for the Department of State that form the backbone of protective design criteria for the government and private industry. To date, we have worked on more than 250 embassy projects worldwide. Through our advanced analytical methods and testing, we continually provide innovative design solutions that support the constantly evolving architectural design environment.
