WELCOME TO THOU ART WOMAN Welcome, and thank you for joining us at our second annual weekend!
G Wright Muir - Co-Founder & Producer
We’re celebrating LGBTQ women and allies in this time and space where we can simply be ourselves. Thou Art Woman began in 2014 as an open mic night during an art exhibition, and has grown beautifully. Nik Harris, PJ Hitchins and I started this event with the support of Niki Lopez, and we have seen it become a necessary component of our community.
I faced great challenges accepting my true self—a gender nonconforming lesbian. Once I found the courage to be fully authentic, I felt the void in the lesbian community for spaces where we could freely express ourselves. My journey fuels my energy to produce Thou Art Woman. After 10 very successful open mic events, we expanded to a weekend. In 2019, we curated our first art exhibition. We thank ArtServe for collaborating with us for this year’s exhibition, (MIS)BEHAVE, and the City of Fort Lauderdale for inviting us to exhibit at City Hall. We also thank the prestigious Broward Center for the Performing Arts for warmly welcoming us back to host our main event there. We’ll close the weekend with the Florida Black LGBTQ Convening. Thanks to Equality Florida and our community partners for helping to create this space for organizers. We are grateful to all our funders, particularly the John Graves Fund at Our Fund Foundation. To everyone who has offered their time, talent and support to the continued success of Thou Art Woman, we thank you. Special thanks to David Jobin of Our Fund Foundation, Niki Lopez and David I. Muir. Enjoy the weekend! We look forward to seeing you again in 2021 and beyond. Yours Truly, G Wright Muir

THOU ART WOMAN: (MIS)BEHAVE LESBIAN FOLKLORE & MORE The (MIS)BEHAVE exhibition aims to explore the ways lesbians have been represented in society at large, and how those representations have been revered, reclaimed, rejected and redefined. It delves into how gender expression, gender presentation and lesbian sexuality have been used as a means of creating our own circles of identity and acceptance. (MIS)BEHAVE is a collaborative effort, presented alongside ArtServe’s exhibition (DIS)OBEDIENT, which runs throughout March 2020. Thanks to ArtServe for their great support, with special thanks to Sophie Bonet for helping with this exhibition from concept through execution.
“Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society’s definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference - those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are black, who are older - know that survival is not an academic skill...For the master’s tools will not dismantle the master’s house. ” -Audre Lorde

JESSICA CONCEPCION Jessica Concepcion is a Miami native, born in 1974. She has worked as a professional artist for over 20 years. Her compositions are an exploration in narrative imagery, brilliantly captured by vivid and diverse colors to evoke emotion and connection. Inspired by her own photography, Concepcion transfers real images into vividly painted photo-scapes, encouraging personal transference both in the physical making of the piece and the actual viewing of the piece itself. Concepcion’s art captures the complexity of common objects in nature. Her signature painting style emphasizes, through color, the vibrancy of nature’s simple and, yet, profound intricacies. Her work asks us to pause and contemplate the seemingly small but extraordinary aspects of nature, often easily missed in one’s busy life and world. Concepcion was awarded the prestigious Old Capitol Solo Exhibition in Tallahassee, FL where her piece “Shades of Blue” was inducted into the State of Florida’s Permanent Collection. JANE KREINBERG Jane has always been interested in photography. In college, she worked mostly with black and white images, doing her own developing and printing in the darkroom. She put a hold on doing photography as an art form for a number of years, concentrating on performing as a percussionist and working with the Women’s Graphics Collective, designing and silk-screening feminist and lesbian posters. Since moving to South Florida in 2009, her work has won several awards, has been exhibited around the area in a number of juried shows ,and has been shown at the NSU Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, Bonnet House and Parker Playhouse. She is the former President of ArtsUnited, and a current member of ArtServe, ArtsUnited and Broward Art Guild. ROSARIA VIGORITO
I am an Italian-American, a lesbian, a retired NY lawyer and an ovarian cancer survivor. My calling, however, is that of an artist. Since living in Florida, I am exhibiting in the area, including, but not limited to, GalleryArt, Tedd’s Artworks, the Broward Art Guild, ArtServe, Business for the Arts of Broward, and ArtsUnited (of which I am a board member). I challenge myself by using and combining different media to express my themes, including digital collaging, which may also be subjects of my paintings. Regardless of the media, my aim is to engage my inner “aestus,” i.e., passionate fire, and transcend beyond just making pretty pictures. I believe art is most powerful when it serves as a bridge from our primal essence to our higher selves. I strive to stimulate and stir the senses, emotionally and psychologically provoke and draw in the viewer, and address matters of the spirit. GIGI MOTLEY Gigi welcomes you to her enchanting journey as a visual and performance artist integrating spoken word with all things that ring and chime. On stage and on canvas Gigi plays with perception and form, inspiring the curious in us all. Her repertoire spans from poetry and theatre to original apparel designs. Multimedia works include tales such as “LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL”, “the feisty MATILDA BROWN”, and “STRAIGHT GIRL”. Tonight Gigi shares her classics piece “HAPPY HOUR”. Seemingly abstract at first, a closer look reveals an unsuspecting model’s rear view as she impatiently awaits her Happy Hour date - Cabernet in tow. Original image captured with an old Nokia flip phone. Cheers! Graciously available for art commissions and voiceover gigs.

THOU ART WOMAN WONDER! Thou Art Woman thanks artist Niki Lopez for her relentless commitment to this movement. Niki invited us to host the very first Thou Art Woman event during her art exhibition at the 1310 Gallery back in 2014. She has been there from the very beginning for all of our events, and by “there” we don’t just mean attending—we mean creating the beautiful graphics including this event program booklet, helping us with social media management and content, and sharing ideas, many of which are elements of our success. She has been a champion for our cause while juggling her own projects, clients and family. Niki, we truly appreciate your passion, time and drive to keep this movement going and growing.
Thank you!
Thou Art Woman partnered with Thinking Cap Theatre at the Vanguard to co-produce “I’m Coming!” This is a theatre workshop series that culminates with short plays written and performed by women in our community. Thanks to all of the women who participated, everyone who attended & to Our Fund Foundation for the Grant which Photos courtesy David I. Muir & Cindy K. Shaw made the production possible.
