As always, Splore will present a raft of work that leads with innovation, builds on our affinity for storytelling, informs our way of thinking, challenges our ways of doing and cultivates our sensory appreciation at every turn.
The art programme being developed for Splore is a dynamic, challenging and, at times, experimental immersion into some of the most interesting art, design and cultural experiences being produced in the country. Responding to the beauty of Tapapakanga Regional Park, and an increasingly educated audience of 8,000 people looking for memorable experiences, the inspiration and ideas driving the artists forward promise to deliver a unique experience to festival-goers.

AMELIA PASCOE ameliapascoe.co.nz
In art, the process informs the artefact and, for many artists, the journey to completion is a mystery. With a desire to break with her more conceptual approach to her jewellery, in A Journey in D (2013), Amelia Pascoe chooses a more non-linear path – from A-to-B (via D). Using industrial and architectural constructions to represent the translation of ideas to tangible forms, Pascoe steps into the void, embraces the unknowns and sheds the constraints that might usually guide her work.
Evan Woodruffe asks us to apply our individual narratives to his ambiguous mises en scène. We use stories to give sense to existence and develop self-identity: we use narrative to manage a nonnarrative life. Woodruffe’s paintings have a similar lack of narrative cohesion as has life, prompting the spectator to bring to bear their own knowledge to reach an understanding of what is happening in the image. In this, the painting opens into an event with many separate witnesses, each with their own version of the incident: a version that changes in time and in discussion with others – just like life’s narrative.
