Plan Your Giving Canadian Cowboys Association judiciously manages and allocates all funds collected from Members and Sponsors towards the Championship Finals. The Canadian Cowboys Association was founded in 1963 with 60 members. Today, over 900 members from across Canada belong to the Association, which includes a full range of contestants and ages. The future is to ensure this legacy, with continued growth and development of the sport of rodeo through new rodeos, youth, rodeo schools, contestant development, an injury fund, sports medicine, etc.

FROM THE DESK, QUAD, TRUCK, HORSE OF MARK BENCZE G.M. Contestant Blog(S) The CCA is interested in having some contestants keep an active blog on the new (coming soon) CCA website. If you would like to keep a light fun blog of life on the road we would love to keep it posted.
The 2013 season got off to a great start at Tisdale. The weather tried to interfere but travel day Friday had the roads mostly clear all the way. Even with weather playing havoc with people's schedule entries were right up there with last year's number. Two nights of full crowds and great performances. Thank you to the Tisdale Rodeo Committee for their great efforts! North Battleford will be done by the time the paper gets out and entries are up from last year. We are looking forward to a great rodeo by the North Battleford Committee. We are working on a new website and it will have a lot of functions for contestants for entries and manage their rodeo file. We also want o provide some fan and contestant interactive features. We are looking for CCA rodeo video for our YouTube channel. If you have great footage from any CCA rodeo please send it the office, canadiancowboys@sasktel.net or communicationsadmin@canadiancowboys.ca. We are actively seeking articles about the rodeos and people of the CCA. If you are a trained writer or just interested in writing stories we would be happy to receive them. We will pay for well written stories.
Myself, along with the board of directors, are looking at ideas to enhance the opportunities for contestants to benefit from competing all year and not making the finals. We are looking at some tour ideas and other programs targeted for contestants and help smaller rodeo committees with more entries etc.
of any rodeo management; (d) To bring about honest advertising by the rodeo association so that the public may rely on the truth of advertised events in which it is claimed that members of the association will participate; and/or (e) To work for the betterment of conditions and of rules governing rodeo events in which members of the association take part. The office and board of the CCA are focused on moving the operations of the CCA to align with the objectives and managing for the contestants and rodeo events.
The CCA is excited about expansion in Ontario. Ross Millar has been sanctioning with the CCA for several years bringing top eastern contestants into the CCA and seeing season leaders compete at the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals Rodeo held in Regina, Saskatchewan in November. Shawn Orr is signing on his tour with the CCA and the CCA now has the base to provide contestants in Ontario with new and exciting opportunities.
We are asking all personnel to oblige with the rules and have your memberships purchased before you work your first event. Contestants, who form the majority of the membership, cannot enter a rodeo without a membership so it's only fair and right that paid personnel also comply. After all we all work for the association, and the association is the contestants. We thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding.
The CCA also welcomes Cliff Willick back as full carded stock contractor.
The CCA would like to thank Lane Peterson for his time and work on the judge’s commission. Due to changes at work, Lane has to step off the commission, but will still judge at rodeos this year.
Last issue, I printed the objectives stated in the bylaws as written by the founders of the CCA. I am printing them again. The objectives of the association are: (a) To organize rodeo contestants for their mutual benefit and protection; (b) To cooperate, insofar as possible, with the management of all rodeos at which members Contest; (c) To protect members against unfairness on the part
Remember to support our corporate sponsors. Also support the rodeos you attend during the season, local committees depend on gate and concession revenue to fund the rodeos for the CCA. Good luck and be safe. Mark
NOVICE ON THE RIGHT TRACK A few years ago Lee Bellows sat down, looked at the low entries in the bronc and bareback events and started to think ... “What was needed to rebuild the ranks?” The answer came quickly. A good, honest, safe place to begin. Fast forward to today. Lee’s mental machination has turned into a movement on the grass roots level. Starting with the Moose Jaw bronc school with the support of Ross Smith, Tyler Cronkite, Lee Sinclair, Dwight Dokken, and the horses of the Francis family and Don Helmeczi. To this winters practices held at the Clearview arena in Fort Qu-Appelle, have brought out many old faces in support of the new guys. The injuries have been light. The numbers have grown, and the new breed has stepped up to the plate. The rules Lee set forth were simple, chute broke horses, good pick up men, and top notch help. The boys have learned under 2 basic rules. Live every moment to get that rank edge honed, and pay the help you receive forward. The contractors have all stepped forward donating time, effort, and a lot of diesel as well as the pickup men, coaches, instructors, chute help, photographers, sports medicine, and facility owners. Special thanks to the people who have pulled together over the years to make this movement a reality.
Instructors: Ross Smith, Lee Sinclair, Dwight Dokken, Tyler Cronkite, Clayton Strutt, Blade Young, Jim Lawrence. Pickup Men: Slim Brown, Kevin Smith, Blade Young, Dwight Dokken. Contractors: Art and Shawn Francis, Jim Lawrence, Chuck Yarshenko, Carl Barrett, Kelly Oremba, Boyd Jacobson, Don Helmeczi.
Bull Fighters: Bo Byrne, Jordyn Swanson, Dean Glencross Special Mention: Randy Lewis (Photography), Trina Martens (Sports Medicine), Lee Bellows And to all the rest. To the parents and chute help we are grateful as well. To you and every person who has stood behind the movement and the riders stand together saying they are ready to step up and be rank.

CANADIAN COWBOYS ASSOCIATION 50 TH ANNIVERSARY The board would like to remind anyone who was involved in the CCA as board member, past champion committee member to contact the office with your updated contact information. We are planning to host a gala event at the finals and want to have as many CCA alumni there as possible.
The response has been slow so far. It's very important that if you are coming to the Finals this year that accommodations and tickets be arranged as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you at Kyle Rodeo and Sandhill Rodeo for 50th anniversary celebrations this summer.

Contestant Information Entries Online entries through our website can be made as early as 7pm on the Wednesday prior to entry day. You MUST HAVE a MEMBERSHIP NUMBER to use the online entry system. A confirmation email will be sent to you at the completion of your entry. Membership #’s, names, and events for all contestants that you are entering must be given, including 1st and 2nd preferences, and who is heading or heeling for the Team Roping entries. There is a link on the CCA Website Entry page with a form to use if you wish to fax your entries or you can call 1.800.667.9444 to enter. CUTOFF for all entries will be 2:30pm (Local Time) on the day of entries.
Monday. The posted draw is final. Please use it to find your individual draw day and time. Call backs are THURSDAY 11am to 1pm local time to report ERRORS ONLY.
Note: An “error” refers to being missed in the draw, buddy group being split up throughout performances, or entered in the wrong event.
DO NOT call the office if you did not get your 1st or 2nd preference. This is not a viable reason. According to 2012 ENTRY STATISTICS, an average of 74% of people who entered received their 1st preference, 22% received their 2nd preference, and only 4% did not get either of their preferences.
Here are some guidelines that MUST be followed when submitting entries: 1.Local contestants MUST call the local entry number to enter. Any carded member wishing to enter with a local MUST enter all their events for that rodeo through the local entry line. Please refer to the entry information for local entry numbers. 2.Roughstock contestants are NOT ALLOWED to pick SLACK as a preference. 3.Contestants must give TWO DIFFERENT preferences or an OUT. Cannot pick two preferences that are the same. 4.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to ask for different preferences for different events. 5.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to enter one rodeo with one group and another rodeo with a different group. 6.ALL contestants in a buddy group MUST ask for the SAME PREFERENCES. Up to four contestants and four junior tags are allowed to buddy together. Team Roping partners are only considered part of the buddy group if they are entering another event in addition to Team Roping. 7.Only the person who made the entry is allowed to make changes to that group’s entry. If you want to be added to a group, then you must have the person who made the entry call in and add you. 8.DO NOT submit multiple or duplicate entries. Decide who is going to make the entry for the group and have only one person submit the entry using only one of the methods available. Multiple entries for the same person or group is not an efficient process for the office and takes valuable time away from staff answering the entry line. 9.ALL FINES MUST BE CLEARED PRIOR TO ENTRY DAY. This includes fines owed to CCA and any other associations. Anyone paying CCA fines on entry day will be charged an additional $50 administration fee. 10.The ENTRY LINE is RESTRICTED to ENTRIES ONLY. If you have other CCA business, please call the main line.
RIDE System The RIDE system was developed to create the draw based on priority levels and to balance the entries between performances. The RIDE system takes the manual manipulation and any possibility of cheating or special favors out of creating the draw. If you do not receive your preference, it is because the system had to randomly move somebody. Your options are to TRADE or TURN OUT. The office cannot and will not alter the draw once it has been posted.
Callback Policy The draws will now be posted on our website no later than Wednesday evening at 7:00PM following entry day
Conduct on the Phone A reminder that rude behavior, harassment, or foul language towards CCA staff will be documented, and result in a $100 fine. This fine will be levied by the CCA office, and the member will have 30 days to pay the fine before they become ineligible to enter as per the CCA Rulebook Section XIII A. 14.
New in 2013 The Family Ride Fee has been discontinued. It was confusing and difficult to administer fairly. Everyone will be charged the same rate.
Direct Deposit The Canadian Cowboys Association is switching to mandatory direct deposit for all rodeo payouts and personnel payments effective July 02, 2013. You can send in a VOID cheque, authorized banking form or submit it by giving it to a rodeo secretary at your next rodeo. After July 02, 2013, if you require a manual cheque there will be an extra charge of $30.00.
If there is no Ontario qualified then the spot will go to the next qualifier n the standings. The CCA is expanding across Canada and contestants from other regions now have the chance in rough stock events to qualify for spots at the Finals. We encourage you to keep track of your placing in the second half of the year as we are sure there will be some interesting races. All CCA rodeos and any co-sanctioned rodeos will count as part of the Final qualifications.
Articles for Newspaper and Website The Canadian Cowboys is actively seeking articles about the rodeos, and people of the CCA. If you are a trained writer or just interested in writing stories we would be happy to receive them. We will pay for well written stories.
Contestant Blog(s) The Canadian Cowboys Association is interested in having one of our contestants keep an active blog on the new (coming soon) website. If you would like to keep a light fun blog of “How to live your life in Eight Seconds” we would love to hear from you.
YouTube Videos The Canadian Cowboys Association is looking for CCA rodeo video for our YouTube channel. If you or know someone who has some great footage of any CCA rodeo please send it to the office, canadiancowboys@sasktel.net or communicationsadmin@canadiancowboys .ca
On Line Entry The on line entry was developed for the convenience of contestants to enable you to entre rodeos the Wednesday before the phone-in entry on Monday. Save yourself from having to redial to reach us by using our 24 hour on line entry which is available the Wednesday preceding the entry deadline day
CCA Finals Rodeo The Canadian Cowboys Association is increasing the first place prize money from $1,000.00 to $ 1,500.00 per performance. Combining that with additions to 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in 2012 this increases the prize money by $ 39,000.00 in the last two years. This brings the total of cash and prizes for the week to $ 174,000.00.
Note New: All timed event contestants who qualify for the CCA Finals Rodeo must have competed at twenty (20) CCA rodeos
The 11th spot at the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals will be reserved for the Ontario season Leader. One more spot in each event will be reserved for Ontario contestants that qualify by placing in the standings and meeting the rodeo count rule for Ontario.

Looking Back... May 15, 1973, Volume 11, No. 7 Edition of the Rodeo News
The North Battleford Kinsmen Rodeo opened the season for the Canadian Cowboys Association on April 27th with a record number of entries. There were 18 bronc riders, 42 bareback riders, 61 bull riders, 35 calf ropers, 33 doggers, 23 ladies barrel racers, 32 junior saddle bronc riders for a total of 254 entries. There was only one go-round in all events with slack in the bull riding and junior steer riding slated for both Saturday and Sunday forenoons. Someone left a water tap running all Sat. night so instead of having the slack on Sunday forenoon, a maintenance crew was busy taking out “soup” and replacing it with dry dirt. The Sunday slack was then run in the regular performance ahead of the similar events. Near sell-out crowds were in attendance for the Friday evening and Sunday afternoon performances with a sell-out crowd on Saturday night. The North Battleford Kinsmen are to be congratulated for their effort in promoting, advertising, and working to make this rodeo the success that it is. Verne Franklin’s Stock started the season by carrying 8 bronc riders to the tweeter out of an entry of 18. Bear Claws carried Lane Berry to 4th spot on his first trip out then lost a flank on the 2nd trip with Fred Hay and then bucked him off on the reride. Polar bear took Ray Doerksen to a 5/6 split with Gordon Ellertson on Douglas Lake and then carried Don Morin to 1st place on his 2nd trip. Douglas Lake grounded Don Hockley on his first try. Don Garriock rode Chuckwagon in the 1st performance to win 2nd spot and Dave Kenyon rode Destruction in the 2nd performance for 3rd place. Verne’s barebacks disqualified 29 of the 42 bareback riders. Comanche carried Ron Ostrom to 1st place in the 1st performance and grounded Mac McKie in the 2nd. North of the Boarder in the 1st performance, carried El
Hornberger to a 4/5 split with Peter Whitlow who rode Celebration in the 2nd performance, then bucked off John Phipps on his 2nd time out. Wally Pugh won 2nd on Cactus in the 3rd performance. Cactus disqualified Dennis Pugh in the 2nd performance. Geo. Pana, the retiring rodeo hand, won 3rd place on Manitou Red in the 1st performance. Denny Robbie took his stock in the 3rd performance and won 6th place with a 61 mark on Little Ross. The bull riding event was won by Dick Stewart for his great ride on Cinnamon in the 2nd performance. Cinnamon grounded Geo. Turcotte in the 1st performance. Ken carried Ken Halverson to 6th place in the 1st performance, Tom Davies to 3rd in the 2nd performance and Don Smith to 2nd place in the Sunday performance. Big Bad John carried Andy Shephard to a 69 marking in Saturday slack for 4th spot and on Sunday Marshall Dillon placed Chuck Nichols in 5th spot. Vernie Turcotte rode Lorado, a Texas bull, in the 1st performance for 67 points and a split on 6th place. Murray Clark gave the crowd quite a thrill during the Friday night performance when he got hung up on a bull called Battleford Kinsmen. He got thrown over the bull’s left shoulder and during the spin managed to gain his feet a time or two then the bull caught him in the middle and threw him in the air to the length of his arm with his hand still solid in his bull rope. Ernie Marshall, the bull fighter was right in there trying to get Murray loose and ripped a muscle in his knee. Murray walked away from it with plenty of bruises and a broken rib. The calf roping was a tough event with strong, hard-to-handle calves. Garry Noyes was the only winner in the 1st performance and had a clocking of 12.3 seconds for 1st place. Monte Cox took his calf in the 2nd performance for 2nd place with 14.1 seconds. Jim Olson, who also ran in the 2nd performance clocked 17.2 for 6th place. Lynn Fowlie tied his
calf in the 3rd performance in 14.8 for 3rd place. The next roper, Denny Robbie, tied his in 15.1 for 4th place and Don Ferguson, also roping in the 3rd performance won 5th place with 16.5 seconds. During the slack after the regular Saturday performance Don Morin scored the fastest time in the steer wrestling with 3.9 seconds but took a 10 second barrier penalty and went out of the money. Ron Dubinsky, also in the slack, won 2nd with 4.5 secs. Bob Grocock, the winner of the event, downed his steer in 4.3 during the Saturday performance. Mac McKie took his steer in the Sunday performance for 6th place with 9.3 seconds. Linda Montgomery ran in the 1st performance to win the ladies event with 15.0 seconds and Sandy McNamee, who also ran in the 1st performance took 2nd spot with 15.1 seconds. Linda Gates and Elaine Stewart both ran in the 3rd performance to win 3rd and 4th with 15.3 and 15.4 seconds. Wade Wills came out on top in the junior steer riding with Buddy Currie in 2nd place. 3rd and 4th was split between Fred Scanie & Dave Malek. Benji Buffalo got injured in the chute while waiting his turn to ride and was unable to compete. Ricky Sangrey, about 8 years old and a little short on cash, paid his entry fee by installments, then didn`t have a rope, hat boots or spurs so had to draw out. However, this determined little guy did manage to get the necessary equipment to be the last rider out in the event on Sun. afternoon for a 2 second exhibition ride. Clint Morin and Lenny Lawes, who placed 1st and 2nd in the junior saddle bronc event were the only riders to make qualified rides. One turned his stock out and the other 7 split ground money. Ron Ostrom of Carseland, Alta. won the All-Around Championship. He competed in the Bareback and Steer Wrestling events.

Wingate for Youth of Rodeo Mentorship Program The Canadian Cowboys Association is excited to partner up with one of our long time supporters, the Wingate Hotel in Regina, to develop the Wingate for Youth of Rodeo Mentorship Program. Laura Armitage, General Manager, and Heather MacBean-Leitner, Sales Manager, have a soft spot for youth and the CCA, a great combination. Youth can get an application from the Wingate Hotel or the CCA office and fill out a brief questionnaire. The applicant is screened for their involvement and
passion for rodeo and then those selected will have their profile in the CCA newspaper and given a free junior membership. These youth selected will also be groomed and asked to be future mentors for kids that do not have access to rodeo. The intent is to have our Youth of Rodeo be ambassadors for the CCA and the sport of rodeo and the lifestyle by attending school and camp visits and other special events during the year and hopefully at the Finals.
The CCA thanks Wingate and encourages our members to support them whenever you are in need of rooms when in the city.
