THANK YOU September 19, 2012 Dear Sir, This thank you has been a long time coming, not being able to find the address. I was very surprised to get the Builders of Rodeo award. It was a total surprise and a real thrill to be so honoured with such a nice award. It has a special place in my living room. I would like to thank all those responsible for giving me this award. It is a real treasure. In 1993, I got the Gordon Simpson belt buckle Working Cowboy award. Tomorrow I will be 91 years young and feel so very fortunate to have had a hand in promoting & helping rodeo’s; which to me is one of the greatest sports you will ever see. Thanks so much again, I feel very lucky to have people like you pick me to get such a special award. Sincerely, Archie Shaver Radville Rodeo, June 16, 2012

PAGE 8 – CCA RODEO NEWS OCTOBER - 2012
Each year, Agribition hosts the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo presented by Ford – the biggest, most exciting and most prestigious semi-pro rodeo competition in the country. “The rodeo athletes who come to Regina are the best of the best. Over the course of the year, they compete in over 60 rodeos with the top 11 winners from each event making it to the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo. This event is a chance for Saskatchewan people to see a world-class sporting event with performances at a level you can’t see in many other places,” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. The Canadian Cowboys’ Association has come a long way since its early days in the 1960s when it could count just 60 members scattered across the prairies. Carl Barrett was in the room on the day the association was formed.
“It all started by a storekeeper who had an interest in the sport. He wasn’t even an active participant; he just wanted to see something started,” Barrett said.
competitors had regular jobs in the cattle industry. Today, you could find anyone from a school teacher to a lawyer involved in the sport.”
Today, the semi-pro association – which maintains its national headquarters in Regina – has over 900 members who compete in front of audiences that number over 250,000 annually, including over 20,000 at Agribition alone. The organization manages over a million dollars in cash and prizes, with the Agribition prizes this year expected to top $ 130,000.00
That’s not to say the association has lost touch with its agricultural roots. The McDermits from Southey, Saskatchewan are a farm family whose children have become avid rodeo competitors. Their son Kyrell and daughters Shayana and Shalayne have grown up around horses and cattle and have developed a passion for competitive rodeo.
The prizes and the size of membership aren’t the only ways the organization has changed over the years. Barrett notes that the backgrounds of members have changed a great deal.
Like any major sport, rodeo requires dedication and discipline. Mother Tamara McDermit says the family can travel as much as 2,000 kilometres in a weekend.
“In the early days, we were all real cowboys; that is, most
“The kids have had to get used to a life of sleeping and doing their homework in the vehicle,” Tamara says.
What keeps them going is the sense of community. “We travel all over North America and meet all sorts of great people from as far away as Australia. It’s our rodeo family – that’s what it’s all about.” Competitors aren’t the only ones for whom the sense of family is important. Spectators have long enjoyed the rodeo as an engaging, exciting sport suitable for all ages. This year the rodeo will feature nine events including bull riding, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing. It continues to rank among the most popular events at Agribition. “Rodeo events offer both top-of-class sportsmanship and spine-tingling entertainment for the whole family. Get your tickets early. We don’t want to see anyone go away disappointed,” Seymour said.

NOTICE: The CCA Office is going to be switching to Direct Deposit rather than physical cheques for the Rodeo Payout. In order to accomplish this we need to collect banking information from all of our members. We will require all competing members to send us a VOID Cheque. They can do this 2 ways….by mail or by giving a VOID cheque to the Rodeo Secretary at a Rodeo when they pay their entrée fees. The secretaries will have a spreadsheet that they will fill out once the member gives the secretary the VOID cheque to hand in to the Office. The Office will keep this VOID cheque on file and directly deposit winnings from every rodeo.

SASKATCHEWAN HIGH SCHOOL RODEO ASSOCIATION
A GREAT YEAR Things have started to slow down after our long hauls around Saskatchewan this wonderful summer/fall. We all worked hard throughout every weekend to keep our rodeos going smoothly, and quickly as possible. I would like to say Thank You to everyone who was able to help out and volunteer his or her time into us kids, this means a lot to all of us and we could not do it without you. Everyone has done a tremendous job, and the standings are looking really good. It is always nice to see the new members doing so well and enjoying their time at the High School Rodeo’s. These past few weeks our rodeo circuit had included Whitewood, Big Beaver, Martinsville, and Melfort. I would really appreciate it if everyone sent out a special Thank You to the hosts of these rodeos for doing such a good job and putting on a very good rodeo for us all to compete in and watch. We will all be resting up for a few weeks getting ready for winter to come, but not putting away the trailer yet, as we will be off to Regina SK, to do a performance the day before the CCA Finals at the Canadian Western Agribition. I hope that everybody will have the chance to come and watch this, as this is a very special rodeo for all of us. I would also like to say that the members from the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo will be selling 50/50 tickets all throughout the week of the CCA Finals, so don’t forget to buy a ticket! This is one of our association’s biggest fundraisers and without this there would not be to much of High School Rodeo left, so please support us as best you can and enjoy the show! I will be looking forward to seeing everyone at The Canadian Western Agribition this year, and I hope you all have a safe winter! Makayla Moen
