Plan Your Giving Canadian Cowboys Association prudently manages and allocates all funds collected from Members and Sponsors towards the Championship Finals. The Canadian Cowboys Association was founded in 1963 with 60 members. Today, over 900 members from across Canada belong to the Association, which includes a full range of contestants and ages. The future is to ensure this legacy, with continued growth and development of the sport of rodeo through new rodeos, youth, rodeo schools, contestant development, an injury fund, sports medicine, etc.

FROM THE DESK, QUAD, TRUCK, HORSE OF MARK BENCZE G.M. The season has been barrelling ahead and the ladies in the office have been working a lot of overtime to ensure that draws and payouts are done on time.
performances are great, crowds are strong and competition is tough. The cooperation and conduct of contestants with the office has been great this year.
We’ve been short a full time staff most of the year and hope that we can get the position filled and a person trained soon!
We want to welcome a new contractor from Ontario, Shawn Orr ABARK rodeo. Shawn has roots in Saskatchewan and him and his family were very involved as contestants with the CCA. The addition of his tour has increased the number of CCA rodeos in Ontario for CCA members .We also thank Ross Millar for working with Shawn and the CCA to prep him for the changes in the entry system draw and rodeo kits.
The reports I am getting from the rodeos are very good. Aside from the little things that pop up when you get a group of people together the

Also we welcome the many new members from Ontario and realize that this year has been a challenge as we align the production of all rodeos with the CCA rule book. The purpose of aligning the rule book is to ensure that contestants from east and west are qualifying for the Finals under the same conditions. The goal is to create a truly national association built on consistency and fairness. We are working on new initiatives for rodeo in the east and hope to be making announcements before the season is over. Statistically we are doing very good. Entries in the west are up by approx 170 over last year. Preferences are also a common question and approx 70% get their first preference about 22% get their second and only 8 % don’t get their preference. Memberships are up overall by approx 170. A good portion is new Ontario members and CCA permit awards for rodeo schools but overall we are up over 80 in the west. Entry day phone calls continue to be a challenge. Please take the time to read and understand the entry and callback procedures on line and on the
Contestant Information page in the newspaper. Contrary to belief, calling in first does not improve your chances of getting your preference. The RIDE system has built in formulas for different variables. Save yourself the hassle and 1. Use the online entry form and 2. Call in after 11:00, the volume drops considerably and you will get through most often on your first call. Over the next couple of months we are going to work on pursuing corporate sponsorship. We will be looking at some contestant surveys to track purchasing habits and preferences for things like cell phone usage, vehicles, trailers etc. One of, if not the most critical aspect of corporate partnerships is exposure and that as the “owners” of the CCA that contestants be sure to promote the CCA through your own individual means, your websites, your Facebook, business cards etc, and through your private sponsorship. The use and promotion of the full name of your association, Canadian Cowboys Association help to build a brand that is recognizable and has market value. We are excited to have Cowtown as the official supplier of CCA branded merchandise. We will soon have a link on the website to the Cowtown CCA page but in the meantime when you are in the Cowtown stores look for the dedicated CCA display and watch for new lines of clothing and merchandise. 50th anniversary plans are moving forward watch the paper and the website as events are starting to come together. Have a safe summer and we’ll see you at Kelliher and Kyle. Mark.

John Gratton Takes “All Round” at Winding Wheel here was a good bunch of cowboys at the Winding Wheel Rodeo at Linbrook, Alta on June 7 and 8. John Gratton of Edmonton, the leader in the saddle bronc standings, placing second on the saddle broncs and won the bareback riding event to win the All-Around Trophy. He was bested by newcomer. Jack Schulte of Fort ST. John, B.C., in the saddle event. John also worked the the Warman, Sask. Rodeo running on the same dates and placed second in the bronc riding behind Mac McKie of Kinsella, Alta., who is runner-up in the standings. Ben Hern of Blindloss, Alta., won the bull riding and added $136.00 to his lead in the bull riding standings. He also got part of a three-way split of third and fourth in the bares to add to his lead in that event. Ben was the
first cowboy to qualify for the 1970 All-Around Standings and now has a lead of $440.00 over Mac Mkie, the only other cowboy to qualify so far. Bill Cikaluik of Viking, Alta, won the calf roping and $163.00 to put him into second place in the Standings behind leader, Wayne Sagin of Dahinda, Sask., who has a lead of $242.00 Mac Mckie won the dogging worth $130.00 to add to his lead in that event. He took over the lead at Grand Centre the week before by a margin of 5 cents $255.50 to Barry Boggust’s $255.45. Ben Hern had a dry run at Lindbrook, but won second and crowning Mac, who is only $45.00 ahead. The Winding Wheel
Rodeo paid out $1,880.00 in the five major events. For the nine rodeo that have turned in their results for the 1970 rodeo season, a total of $21,180.00 has
been paid out in prize money for the C.A.C.A. approved events. (These standing and figures do not include Mankota and Smoky Lake.

CCA Rodeo News Vol 13-No 2. February, 1975 New Champion Is Charter Member eorge Popesoul, as 41 year old rodeo hand who farms and ranches in the Scout Lake area of Sask., a charter member of the C.C.A. then known as the S.A.R.C.A. (Sask. Amateur Rodeo Cowboys Association) when it was formed in the spring of 1963 was one of the first year-end champions. He won the steer decorating championship with winnings of $40.00 and
received a trophy buckle. This event was held at only a couple of the 14 rodeos held that year and George emerged the winner. He ended that same year in 5th place in the calf roping with earnings of $172.00, In 1964 he confined his rodeo to the calf roping event and has been a one-event man since that time. In 1969 he made a hard

run to the championship and gave is neighbor, Nick Nicholson, a hard time for most of the second half of the season and ended the year a close second. The next three years he dropped back a bit and then in 1973 he took off again and ended that season with total winnings of $2545.00 but again ended up in the runner-up position, this time behind Billy Herman of Blindloss, Alta. The 1974 season was a nerve wracking time for George with fast times and everything going just right at some rodeos and broken barriers and missed loops at others.
Sometimes it was a long drive home. An up and down year, like a monkey on a teeter totter, but he ended the year in the up position with $203.00 ahead of the runner-up, Larry Cherntwchan of Bellis, Alta., for a total of $2883.00 to win the championship trophy saddle put up by the C.C.A. and the trophy buckle donated by Farmer Stockman Supply of Medicine Hat, Alta. George served on the Board of Directors for 1969 and 1970 and again in 1974 and was the calf roping director for 1969 and 1970. George was the main character in the Goldilocks story which took place during the Cadillac rodeo in 1973 and he also has some wolf hounds, some of which put on outstanding displays while on the trail of the prairie wolf known as coyote.

Rodeo Royalty Well it’s hard to believe that I have another busy year in front of me. Having the opportunity to be your 2012-2013 SHSRA Queen was an experience that changed my life. I met so many new people, learned so much about myself, and made memories that I will never forget. I am so honoured to have been able to run again and be crowned your 2013-2014 Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Queen. I would like to thank everyone who supported me throughout the competition especially to my family; I could not have done any of this without them. Congratulations to Cassandra Eaton who did an incredible job throughout the whole Queen contest and was crowned Princess; I am excited to spend the next year working with her. I am so grateful to be able to represent our province once again, it is such an honor. I would like to say good luck to everybody who is heading off to Jr. and High school National Finals and also to those who are going to Silverstate; I know you will all do great. Once Nationals are over it will be a quick rearrange in the trailer and were off the Canadian High School Final Rodeos in Nanton, Alberta. Safe travels to everyone, and I’ll see you there! Miss SHSRA Makayla Moen My year as Princess and final year of high school rodeo has come to a close. It was a privilege being crowned the 2012-13 SHSRA Princess, and I was taught many things about myself and the sport of rodeo. There were a lot of challenges and responsibilities involved, but I value everything that I learned over this past year. I would not have been able to come this far without all the help and support that I received. I’d like to first off give a huge thank you to my dad Chris for putting up with me these past 4 years, hauling me to all the rodeos, and giving me never ending support. Thanks to Alison Ellis and Theresa Friesen for all of their help and tips since day one of my royalty journey, as well as organizing a fantastic queen contest. Another huge thank you goes to my grand entry crew, Cody Friesen for always being there bright and early to say the Cowboy Prayer for me, along with my main girls Emily Stewart and Shelby Lockie who never hesitated to sing O Canada, and of course my flag carriers. Thanks to each and every one of you who carried a flag for me during our rodeo season, whether it was once or ten times, I can’t thank you enough! I’m leaving SHSRA with memories and friendships I will never forget, and experiences I would have never imagined having without this association. Congratulations to our newly crowned 2013-14 Princess, Miss Cassandra Eaton, I wish you all the best in your year as rodeo royalty! Hope everyone has a great summer, and to see you all down the rodeo trail! Sincerely, Miss SHSRA Princess Becca White
