FROM THE DESK, QUAD, TRUCK, HORSE OF MARK BENCZE G.M. The office and the board is committed to managing the affairs of the Assiocation diligently, now is the time when you need to get your comments and suggestions into the event reps or any director or call me to discuss. Any specific requests for rule changes, amendments etc have to be in writing The planning for 2014 has started and we want to be sure that all changes and planning information are communicated well ahead of the AGM so that everyone has time to provide feedback. August puts us just past the half way point of the season. We have been short staffed all year so we appreciate the patience and cooperation of all contestants when calling or emailing in and needing information. There is always someone here Monday to Friday 8-5:00 so if you call and don't get someone they are on the phone or maybe even eating lunch or sometime on a nature break. Please leave a message or send an email, we do return calls, everyone in the office is committed to answering and returning calls as quickly as possible. Please take the time to read the contestant information on the website and in the paper each month. There are excessive numbers of calls to enter, for call backs, paying fines etc. on wrong days and times. We are 100% committed to making sure everyone who entered gets in the draw but the timelines are important to the deadlines getting the information into the system etc, , so please do your part and work within the established timelines. The 50th Anniversary Celebration at Kyle Rodeo will be over by the time the paper gets out but the work done by the Kyle Committee and Brad Strandquist has been great and it sounded like the turnout of Alumni was going to be strong.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSOCIATION The objectives of the association are: (a) To organize rodeo contestants for their mutual benefit and protection. (b) To cooperate, insofar as possible, with the management of all rodeos at which members contest. (c) To protect members against unfairness on the part of any rodeo management; (d) To bring about honest advertising by the rodeo association so that the public may rely on the truth of advertised events in which it is claimed that members of the association will participate. (e) To work for the betterment of conditions and of rules governing rodeo events in which members of the association take part.

“

We have started meeting with CWA planning for the 2013 Finals. With the 50th anniversary and plans for a Gala on Saturday, new merchandise and what looks like will be a great effort by the CWA to promote and market the Finals its feeling like it's going to a special time this year. Hopefully we'll have seen you at Kyle. Mark.

Good Weather, Attendance At Major

A J O R - T h e Fusilier-Major Community Rodeo sponsored by the Rodeo Association and the Major Arena had real good weather and attendance for the show on May 27 and 28. In conjunction with the rodeo there was a demolition derby on Sunday afternoon and a Rodeo Social and Dance in the Fusilier Hall on Saturday night. For the rodeo, there were 38 saddle bronc riders, 42 bareback riders, 62 bull riders, 61 calf ropers, 39 steer wrestlers, 41 junior steer riders, seven junior saddle bronc riders, 24 ladies barrel racers and 10 midget

steer riders for a total of 325 entries. Lane Berry of Hanna, Alta., scored a 70 in the saddle bronc on Brown-West’s ‘71 McLean which gave him a trophy buckle plus first place money of $377.30. He also placed in the bull riding and also worked the steer wrestling. He earned $459.60 to win the All Around Champion Trophy Saddle donated by Frank Evans and Sons of Altario and Bruce Annabel of the Compeer Hotel. Dave Shields, also of Hanna scored 66 on ‘45 Big Buck to win top money and the buckle in the bareback. Dale Vine of Medicine Hat, Alta., rode Leo Brown’s ‘Elk’ to the pay window for top money of

$583.10 for his 68-point bull ride. Top money in the junior saddle bronc riding was $84.28 which went to Keith Stewart of Wainwright, Alta., for his 56-point ride. George Popescul of Scout Lake, Sask., roped and tied his calf in 11.4 seconds to win the calf roping and top money of $574.52. Melvin Lawes of Provost, Alta., threw his steer in 4.6 seconds to take top money of $385.87 in the steer wrestling. Ladies’ barrel racing ended in a tie for first and second money with Jerri Duce of Granum, Alta., and Rilla Sappok of Ryley, Alta., both

running the barrels with a time of 16.9 seconds to win $173.36 each. In the junior steer riding, Dale Woodward of Wainwright, Rick Gibbs of Youngstown, Alt., and Doug McKie of Kinsella, Alta., split first, second and third place winning $135.26 each for their respective 65-point rides. Rick Gibbs was lucky in the draw when he ended up with the trophy buckle. In the midget steer riding, Dale Woodward was the only contestant to mark a ride scoring a 64 to win $22 and the trophy buckle. There was a ground split among the remaining nine midget contestants.

CCA Rodeo News Vol 15-No 12. August 1, 1977 hat was the order of happenings at the Wood Mountain Rodeo on July 10th. A fair number of peole watched the slack starting about 11:00 a.m., and running to about 12:15. Twenty-five teams of team ropers, 16 calf ropers and eight doggers took their runs in the slack. There were 13 bronc riders, 23 bareback riders, 33 bull riders, 32 calf ropers, 20 steer wrestlers, 12 barrel racers and 41 teams of team ropers for a total of 174 entries competing for the $5, 145.00 of prize money. There had been about four-tenths of an inch of rain during the night which settled the dust pretty good. The rodeo was to start at 2:00 p.m., and about that time the rain started, and

Thrills, Spills And Splashes

down came about four inches by 3:30 p.m. The little Wood River overflowed its banks and several cars got marooned in it. The rodeo got started at about 5:00 p.m., before an almost empty grandstand and bleachers. That’s when some of the cowboys took to swimming in the lake in front of the chutes. Most of them made a desperate attempt to stay on top and quite a few of them did. The broncs didn’t buck too hard in the mud and water but a lot of the riders egged out. There was only one rider bucked off in the saddle bronc event and six in the bareback event. Lee McKenzie of Medicine Hat was the only one to take a re-ride in the bareback riding and he went the water route on his second trip. The bulls went some better

and dumped 11 of their riders in the lake. The girls made fairly cautious trips in their event and ran about two and one-half seconds over the usual barrel racing times. Clint Morin of Meadow Lake, Sask., won the saddle bronc riding with 66 points on J7 Sorrel Top with Don Gillespie of Mankota, Sask., in second place with 63 points on 199 Smokey. Howard Claypool of North Battleford on AC Sorrel and Lorrie Hunter of Elrose, Sask. on M13 Golden Ruler took third and fourth places respectively. Brent Hall of Taber, Alta., and Stewart Finkbeiner of Duchess, Alta. on M10 Dear John and Buckskin Joe respectively, split the bareback riding with 71 points each. Gordon Ellertson scored 68 points on

111 Bengough for third place. Brian Ogle of Wood Mountain scored a good 75 on #18 Ivy League to win the bull riding event. Marvin Moore of Trossachs, Sask. scored 73 points on #33 Snowman to split second and third with Don Gillespie, who scored his 73 points on #4 Tom Thumb. Most of the prize money in the timed events was won in the morning’s slack. Jamie Dee Anderson of Regina, the sixth barrel racer on the program, had 20.3 seconds to beat when she started her run; she made the circuit in 18.2 to take the lead and wasn’t beaten. Lona Leslie of Maple Creek, the nineth racer, made her run in 18.7 seconds for second place. The rodeo was over by 9:00 p.m., and later the rain started falling again.

CCA Rodeo News Vol 16 No. 19 June 20, 1978 meeting of Canadian Cowboys’ Association officers, board of directors and event directors was held in the Red River Roping and Riding Club Arena in Prince Albert. Sask., on Sunday, June 11. Those present for the meeting were CCA President Barry Boggust, Vice-President Bill Cikaluk, Sec.-Treas. Jim Swettenham; Board of Directors Mervin Quam, Ken Sayers, Denny Robbie, John Arntsen, Howards Claypool, Al Smithson and Larry Jacobson; Event Directors Mac McKie, Glen Purves, Jim Glanville, Darryl Hinkey, Stan Garnier and Sandy McNamee. President Boggust called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m., CST.

Directors Meet In Prince Albert

The reading of minutes of a directors’ meeting held in Kindersley, Sask., were adopted as read on motion by Jim Glanville, seconded by Bill Cikaluk. Carried. The question of ground split money under $2 was discussed and the directors agreed that rodeo secretaries must pay the funds out in the form of ground money, although this need not be done by cheque, but rather could be handled at the next rodeo that person secretaries. The idea of the feasibilty of having a rodeo, promotions and committee liaison officer is to be discussed at the annual meeting. Discussions regarding rule changes and turnout fines resulted in the following motion: “If a contestant

provides proof to the CCA Rodeo Office that he was drawn up to two CCA rodeos the same day, turnout fines will not apply. Moved by Mac McKie, seconded by Ken Sayers. Carried. It was recommended that junior contestant cards be re-issued by the CCA Secretary-Treasurer with the new cards being prefixed by a ‘J’. The junior contestant with his ‘J’ card does not have authority to guarantee the entry fees for any contestant other than him/herself. Local contestants who compete without holding a junior card should have their entry form release signed by parents. The question of Major League Rodeo and having some of our members contesting both MLR

as well as CCA approved rodeos was raised, with some directors expressing the opinion that MLR was not an organized or recognized rodeo association and that members were therefore working unapproved rodeos. This feeling was laid aside after it was explained that MLR is indeed an organized rodeo operation despite the fact it has not received the blessing of professional rodeo associations. The meeting felt it would be wrong to penalize members for trying to better themselves by competing in MLR. The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m., CST on motion by Howard Claypool. seconded by Denny Robbie. Carried.

Rodeo Royalty I had a blast being the 2012-2013 Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Queen which makes it such an honor to be able to represent the wonderful Association once again for the 2013-2014 season. I hope everyone is ready for another year of my horrible grammar and amazing articles! Nationals was so much fun, the Saskatchewan team did great, congratulations to JB Moen for placing 12th in the Bull Riding and Sask volleyball team for placing 2nd once again. We will get em' next year! Some of us kept the vacation going and went straight from Rock Springs to Nanton Alberta for the Canadian High School Finals where we spent a few more days competing. This year at Canadians I was the only Queen representing the Canadian Provinces, I enjoyed working with the Saskatchewan Princess Cassandra Eaton and BC Princess Morgan Plumridge. We spent our days selling 50/50 tickets, chasing out stock, and the most memorable experience of all, visiting the nursing home. When we visited the nursing home the queens gave their speeches, and other rodeo contestants gave roping, and goat tying demonstrations. After many questions were asked and we all had some time to walk around and individually meet and talk to the adults it was unfortunately time for us to get back to the rodeo. This is an experience that I hope every child can have because you don't understand how meaningful it truly is until you try it. But anyways congratulations to all of Sask for another great year at Candians. We had Taryn Parsonage win the Sr. Girls all around, Tee McLeod win Jr. Boys all around, and Kassidy Williams win Jr. Girls all around. There was also many more Saskatchewan kids that placed in the top during the Finals! To wrap things up I just want to say to all of the contestants from Jr. Nationals, Sr. Nationals, Silverstates, and Canadian Finals that you all did an amazing job and to quote Joe Beaver, "You're never a loser, you just got beat." And I'll see you all at Whitewood! Miss SHSRA Makayla Moen
