Plan Your Giving Canadian Cowboys Association prudently manages and allocates all funds collected from Members and Sponsors towards the Championship Finals. The Canadian Cowboys Association was founded in 1963 with 60 members. Today, over 900 members from across Canada belong to the Association, which includes a full range of contestants and ages. The future is to ensure this legacy, with continued growth and development of the sport of rodeo through new rodeos, youth, rodeo schools, contestant development, an injury fund, sports medicine, etc.

Looking Back... CACA RODEO NEWS Vol 8 - No. 10 July 15, 1970 dirtiest, only one came out photographer, was on hand Rain: Cowboys! clean in steer wrestling. and got some pictures of Guess who? George Pana. But action. The weather was Wild Stock at Radville Rodeo a Scoby, Mont. Cowboy the way out of hand for a Great Enter a field that lets you arena to take home some cleaned up the money and Falls Mont cowboy, Stan

break away from the dull day to day routine and lets you use your talents and personality to the fullest. Rodeo! Each time brings a fresh, new challenge and you meet a great bunch of people. Ninety-five cowboys and cowgirls entered from Montana, North Dakota and the three Prairie Provinces to endure the storms at Radville Elks Rodeo. Myron Brown drove up from Culbertson, Mont to go for a few fast spins in the

Canadian money and the Saddle Bronc Trophy. George Pana not only managed the cleanest white shirt after the Rodeo but also took the money and the Bare Back Trophy home to Fir Mountain with home. Brian Claypool left a mighty fine hat sitting in the mud but picked up the cash and Bull Riding Trophy. The way Brian was smiling there must be lots of hats and water back home in Saskatoon. It’s hard to say which cowboy came out the

the Steer Wrestling Trophy. Ending a joking controversy between cowboys, Wayne Sagin showed them all how to tie calves in the mud and water in time to collect the money and trophy in Calf Roping. Eleanor Harrison from Alida galloped her horse through the mud ad around the barrel to come up with the fastest time, the money and the trophy in the Ladies Barrel Race. No one will ever be sure how deep the mud was but Rick White, contender and

Stein who called us on the phone and said he’d sure liked to be there and we’d have been happy to have him. A great big tip of the hat to all the cowboys and cowgirls who did their best to make the Radville Elks Rodeo as much of a success as it was. All points from this Rodeo and our previous shows are eligible for the high Point Trophies and Trophy Saddle. Welcome to our next Rodeo! Roy and Clayton of Midwest Rodeos.

Looking Back... CCA RODEO NEWS Vol. 9窶年o. 8 June 1, 1971 Crowd Of 3000 Attends Sandhill Rodeo

The Sandhill Roping Club had a real good day for their ninth annual rodeo south of Lancer, Sask, on May 23. The crowd of more than 3000 saw a good fast moving rodeo. Myer Bar T saddle broncs were firing real good and put 6 of the 8 saddle bronc riders on the ground before the whistle sounded. This grounded group included the 1970 saddle bronc champion, John Gratton of Edmonton, Alta, along with Asa Miller of Cabri, Sask and Brian Claypool of Saskatoon Sask. The new metal bucking chutes built during the winter, played a great part in the smooth run of the rodeo. These chutes were built in a Quonset on the farm of Willie Hoogeveen about 8 miles north of Shackleton, Sask,. Willie did most of the layout, cutting, welding, etc., and along with the rest of the Club he is real proud of the finished product. Lewis Perderson of Abbey, Sask, is responsible for the painting of the roper and calf on the front of the announcing booth. Ed Atkins of Abbey, the official repairman of other years, seemed kind of lost with no chutes being kicked apart. George Popescul, Scout Lake, Sask., rode off with the biggest pay-off when he won the calf roping worth $150.00. Sonny Hartman came down from Calgary to fit a wild spurring ride on Bull#25, Shawnee and mark 11 points higher than his closest rival, Ben Hern of Bindloss, Alta. The 8 second ride earned Sonny $132.00 Ben Hurn, with a 3rd okace win on the bares and a 2nd on the bulls, won the All-Around trophy and a total of $150.00. Sixty-five cowboys and cowgirls paid $1175.00 in entry fees for 83 entries with 23 of them sharing in the $1575.00 pay-off.

CCA RODEO NEWS August 1971

The Association Grows

The Saskatchewan Amateur Rodeo Cowboys Associaton was formed on April 3rd 1963 in Swift Current, Sask. It ended that year with 17 one day rodeos and 107 members. There were trophy buckles or trophies for the champions of all the events plus a trophy saddle for the All-Around. This saddle was put up by the Foster Mfg, Ray Durfee, of Swift Current branch. Ray came from Oregon and used to travel the rodeo trail with Ross Dollarhide, also of Oregon. George Pana of Fir Mountain was the first President and won the All-Round, Bareback and Native Cow Riding championship that year with a total of $1676.70. Steve Gulka (now of Pipestone, Man) won $525.50 to take the Saddle Bronc championship. Billy Ogle of Wood Mountain won the Calf Roping with $805.00. George Poescul $40.00 to win the Steer Decorating-only 2 or 3 rodeos had Decorating that year. George Pana has set a fair record for a guy who was going to quit rodeoing in 1962 and several times since. He went on to win the All-Around again in 1967, the Bareback in 1967 and placed 2nd in ’69, in the NCR in ’64, 3rd in ’65 and won it again in ’67 and ’69. Ge placed 3rd in the Steer Decorating in ’63,

2nd, in ’66 and won the event in ’67. His winnings of $2023.00 put him in 5th place in the 1969 All-Round Standings. Over the following years the SARCA expanded to 39 rodeos, 64 performances, and a total purse of $69,190. In 1968. At the annual Meeting that year the name was changed to the Canadian Amateur Cowboys Association. In 1969 there were 44 CACA approved rodeos with 77 performances, and $89, 245. In the pot. The 1969 All-Around champion, Gordon Ellertson of Cereal, Alta, put together 4 events: Saddle Bronc, Bareback Bronc, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling to win the championship with $4,320.90. There were trophy saddles for all the major events and the All-Around winners for 1968 and 1969, plus additional trophies. Finals Rodeos were held for the first few years of the Association-1963 at Cabri: 1964 at Carnduff, 1965 and 66 at Clearwater Lake. These proved to be unsatisfactory so were discontinued. Inter-Provincial rodeo competitions were held between the Foothills Cowboys Association and the CACA. The FCA won the 1963 and ’64 contests at Didsbury, Alta. They won 1965 by default and won again at Cochrane, Alta in

Ron Thistlewaite Meadow Lake Stampede 1970. Photo by Rick White 1966. The CACA won in 1967 and again at Two Hills, ALTA in 1968. These rodeos were also discontinued because of some of the top contestants being unable to attend. The outlook for this year seems bigger and brighter

for the Association with 10 rodeos already approved and the Association with ten rodeos already and dates listed for 23 more. To date there are 12 new ones for this year, either approved or seeking approval.

CCA Rodeo News Vol. 9-No11 July 15, 1971 get loose. The clown came

Sun Shines Brightly For in to help him but was just getting in the way Mankota’s Homecoming Rodeo; so Jim hopped back astride the bull, took Good Crowds Attend. off his wraps and then The Mankota Homecoming “71 committee had a real good day for their rodeo on July 8th with a good turnout of spectators and contestants. Don Simonton, Malta, Mont won the saddle bronc riding aboard Edge of Night of the Larson and Lockhart stock. John Arnsten, Beechy, Sask won the bareback riding with a 58 score after getting a re-ride for his efforts on 23 Satan’s

Sister. The bullriding was won by Ben Hern of Bindloss, Alta, the 1970 CCA All Round Champion, with his left foot in a cast. A more spectacular display of skill was put on by his brother, Jim. Jim was making a good ride until he bucked off at about 6 seconds. His hand got hung up in his rope and Jim was running alongside the bucking bull and trying to

bailed off again. Myrtis Dightman of Crockett, Texas, a top bull rider, is the only other bull rider known to have performed this feat. Bill Cikaluik of Viking, Alta, won the calf roping with the fast time of 11.2. Bill had a steer horn shoved into his chest a week previous at Meadow Lake in the steer wrestling event and was too sore to take his steer in the decorating after this calf

run so hard to turn him out. The winner and the only man to qualify in the steer decorating was Bob Grocock of Czar Alta. He took a bad bump in the chest and stomach and 17.3 seconds to get the ribbon on but was the only man to do so. Jamie Dee Anderson, Regina, Sask, won the ladies event, taking only 17.2 seconds to make her cloverleaf around the barrels, a full 3/10 if a second faster than her nearest competitor, Sylvia Couler of Shackleton , Sask who took 17.5 to complete the circuit.

Contestant Information Entries Online entry was developed for the convenience of contestants to avoid the delays of calls backed-up on entry day. It’s available online through the website www.canadiancowboys.ca 24 hours a day by 7 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the entry day. You MUST HAVE a MEMBERSHIP NUMBER to use the online entry system. A confirmation email will be sent to you at the completion of your entry. Membership #’s, names, and events for all contestants that you are entering must be given, including 1st and 2nd preferences, and who is heading or heeling for the Team Roping entries. There is a link on the CCA Website Entry page with a form to use if you wish to fax your entries or you can call 1.800.667.9444 to enter. CUTOFF for all entries will be 2:30pm (Local Time) on the day of entries. Here are some guidelines that MUST be followed when submitting entries: 1.Local contestants MUST call the local entry number to enter. Any carded member wishing to enter with a local MUST enter all their events for that rodeo through the local entry line. Please refer to the entry information for local entry numbers. 2.Roughstock contestants are NOT ALLOWED to pick SLACK as a preference. 3.Contestants must give TWO DIFFERENT preferences or an OUT. Cannot pick two preferences that are the same. 4.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to ask for different preferences for different events. 5.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to enter one rodeo with one group and another rodeo with a different group. 6.ALL contestants in a buddy group MUST ask for the SAME PREFERENCES. Up to four contestants and four junior tags are allowed to buddy together. Team Roping partners are only considered part of the buddy group if they are entering another event in addition to Team Roping. 7.Only the person who made the entry is allowed to make changes to that group’s entry. If you want to be added to a group, then you must have the person who made the entry call in and add you. 8.DO NOT submit multiple or duplicate entries. Decide who is going to make the entry for the group and have only one person submit the entry using only one of the methods available. Multiple entries for the same person or group is not an efficient process for the office and takes valuable time away from staff answering the entry line. 9.ALL FINES MUST BE CLEARED PRIOR TO ENTRY DAY. This includes fines owed to CCA and any other associations. Anyone paying CCA fines on entry day will be charged an additional $50 administration fee. 10.The ENTRY LINE is RESTRICTED to ENTRIES ONLY. If you have other CCA business, please call the main line. RIDE System The RIDE system was developed to create the draw based on priority levels and to balance the entries between performances. The RIDE system takes the manual manipulation and any possibility of cheating

or special favors out of creating the draw. If you do not receive your preference, it is because the system had to randomly move somebody. Your options are to TRADE or TURN OUT. The office cannot and will not alter the draw once it has been posted. Callback Policy The draws will now be posted on our website no later than Wednesday evening at 7:00PM following entry day Monday. The posted draw is final. Please use it to find your individual draw day and time. Call backs are THURSDAY 11am to 1pm local time to report ERRORS ONLY. Note: An “error” refers to being missed in the draw, buddy group being split up throughout performances, or entered in the wrong event. DO NOT call the office if you did not get your 1st or 2nd preference. This is not a viable reason. According to 2012 ENTRY STATISTICS, an average of 74% of people who entered received their 1st preference, 22% received their 2nd preference, and only 4% did not get either of their preferences. Turn Outs If you have to Turn Out, you MUST call the Turn Out Line at 306.721.2705 and leave a message. For Dual Approved Rodeos, you MUST call the LEAD Association to Turn Out. If you Turn Out using a Medical or Vet Release, you MUST send a Doctor or Vet note to the CCA office within 10 days of the Turn Out or else you will be charged applicable Turn Out Fees & Fines as per the CCA Rulebook. NOTE: ALL TURN OUTS COME WITH APPLICABLE FEES AND/OR FINES, INCLUDING MEDICAL & VET RELEASES. If you Turn Out you are responsible to contact the CCA office to pay any outstanding fees or fines as a result. Please refer to the CCA Rulebook for all Turn Out rules. Conduct on the Phone A reminder that rude behavior, harassment, or foul language towards CCA staff will be documented, and result in a $100 fine. This fine will be levied by the CCA office, and the member will have 30 days to pay the fine before they become ineligible to enter as per the CCA Rulebook Section XIII A. 14. New in 2013 The Family Ride Fee has been discontinued. It was confusing and difficult to administer fairly. Everyone will be charged the same rate. U.S. Currency, checks: The secretaries at CCA rodeos will no longer accept U.S. cash or checks. For U.S.., contestants please make arrangements to bring Canadian currency or have a Canadian Bank account set up Direct Deposit The Canadian Cowboys Association is switching to mandatory direct deposit for all rodeo payouts and personnel payments effective July 02, 2013. You can send in a VOID cheque, authorized banking form or submit it by giving it to a rodeo secretary at your next rodeo. After July 02, 2013, if you require a manual cheque there will be an extra charge of $30.00.

CCA Finals Rodeo The Canadian Cowboys Association is increasing the first place prize money from $1,000.00 to $ 1,500.00 per performance. Combining that with additions to 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in 2012 this increases the prize money by $ 39,000.00 in the last two years. This brings the total of cash and prizes for the week to $ 174,000.00. Note New: All timed event contestants who qualify for the CCA Finals Rodeo must have competed at twenty (20) CCA rodeos The 11th spot at the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals will be reserved for the Ontario season Leader. One more spot in each event will be reserved for Ontario contestants that qualify by placing in the standings and meeting the rodeo count rule for Ontario. If there is no Ontario qualified then the spot will go to the next qualifier n the standings. The CCA is expanding across Canada and contestants from other regions now have the chance in rough stock events to qualify for spots at the Finals. We encourage you to keep track of your placing in the second half of the year as we are sure there will be some interesting races. All CCA rodeos and any co-sanctioned rodeos will count as part of the Final qualifications.

Looking Back... SASKATCHEWAN AMATEUR COWBOYS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER Vol. 1 No. 5 July 1, 1963 COMMENTS BY THE PRESIDENT; George Pana, Fir Mountain, Sask. With all the five inches of rain we had last week I thought Gainsboro Rodeo would be rained out, but it wasn’t. The roads were bad getting there, but once there the horses bucked real good. In fact the saddle bronc Dwayne Lloyd drew was a real bucking horse. Dwayne bucked off and had his shoulder dislocated. He was in Gainsboro Hospital for a day and a night. Dwayne is home now. It seems like all these boys that get engaged have a little bad luck. Dwayne is engaged and plans on getting married next fall. The other day I was driving out of Assiniboia, moving so slow I thought a car might push me out of the way. All at once the Mounted Police drove up and fined me for speeding. So all you boys driving around Assiniboia and in a hurry, want to be driving late at night or early in the morning, believe me those Mounted Police are wide awake in the daytime. *********************************** FROM YOUR SECRETARY; Alvin Dunford, Portreeve, Sask. There sure was a good crowd at the Lancer Rodeo on June 16th. Some estimates are 4000 or better, lots of cowboys too, 158 entries. Tiny Toews was the announcer and he was his usual eloquent self. He keeps the crowd informed at all times as to what is happening and what to look for in rodeo events. Jim Trout of Maple Creek and Harold Mock of Sounding Lake, Alta. were the judges for the riding events and they did a right good job of it. Neil Clary of Leader, a former Lancer boy and quite a calf roper, flagged the ropers, cow milkers, and barrel and stake racers. Neil has been a C.P.A. member for quite a number of years and has roped all over western Canada. He also rode bareback broncs when he first started rodeoing. Rex Bovee of the Minor Ranch had a bit of a spill in the wild cow milking. His horse tripped on the cow’s hide feet and fell, slamming Rex onto the ground and knocking him out. It took quite a spell to bring him around, he spent a few days at the Cabri Hospital before the Doctor would let him go. He came back to the ranch on Thursday. I got the names of a few more members from George Pana at the Rodeo last Sunday. George has sure signed up a lot of members for the S.A.R.C.A. we now have 132 members. 42 associate and 90 active. Speaking of active members, we have none more active than Ray Gunther, expecially when he’s calf roping. “Well”, he says, “we needed a clown anyway.” Jack Orr of Maple Creek is hitting a good lick. He has won the saddle bronc riding three times in a row, at Assiniboia, Gainsboro, and Lancer rodeos. Unfortunately he wasn’t a S.A.R.C.A. member when he won the first one. There was a reporter at the Lancer rodeo getting the list of winners, prize money, etc. for the Medicine Hat News, the results will also appear in the Swift Current Sun and the Leader News. Duncan’s round-up was on Sunday June 23rd. After a late dinner we all went over to the Sandhill Roping Club for a little calf roping and cow riding. Rex Bovee came along about 6 o’clock, he said he was feeling pretty fair but his left shoulder was still pretty stiff and sore. We had two jack-pot roping. Rodeo Royalty It was so great to see everybody again, I have been waiting all winter for this! I hope that everybody had a great weekend in Biggar, because I know that I did. Thank you so much to the Peters family and the Biggar rodeo committee for everything that they did so that the rodeo could happen, it is greatly appreciated and you put so much effort into it. The Saturday night events were a blast. I hope that all the mothers out there had a great Mothers Day last Sunday, you are all amazing and we wouldn't be here without you. The long weekend rodeo will be held in Herbert so everybody will need to start getting ready for that! We are still looking for any girls who want to run for the Queens contest, it will be short preparation time but if you want to run there is still a bit of time. There isn't much time left to earn your points to make the top 10 for finals so keep on practicing and we will see what everybody has during the next few rodeos. Many people will be busy with track and field and also grad in the next few weeks so I want to say good luck to everybody while they take place in those activities. and I will see you all at the next rodeo! Miss SHSRA Makayla Moen
