slow fashion
“Threads of Peru is a non-profit social enterprise that connects the world to the woven work of Quechua women, helping to preserve their ancient craft and provide them with economic opportunity.
Threads of Peru offers a more authentic and sustainable view of fashion, one that interconnects textiles, people, and the world, according to the principles of the worldwide Slow Fashion movement.
When we buy directly from communities we pay the weavers up-front and fairly above market price. 4
Threads of Peru sells Authentic Andean Textiles. Our textiles are high-quality, handmade treasures that will be cherished for a lifetime. Our textiles are handmade using ancient methods that pre-date the Inca, using natural dyes and organic free-range alpaca and wool, which is spun into yarn and intricately woven by hand. We offer a range of traditionally hand-woven products that are commonly made by indigenous weavers in the Sacred Valley region of Peru. Many items have deep historic roots and are intimately tied to the culture and daily lives of the weavers. Others have evolved from market demands of visitors and the potential uses for other cultures.
Slow Fashion is about providing a more sustainable future for the textile and clothing sector, linking fashion with awareness and responsibility, shifting value away from consumption to a conscious valuation of quality and durability in the products you buy and use.
We commit to provide you with high quality, hand-crafted products, each piece carefully woven one at a time according to centuries of tradition. Our products foster ecological and cultural integrity, as we focus on producing unique pieces from 100% natural materials. We aim to cultivate a strong relationship between the consumer and the producer. We want you to feel like you know the weavers as intimately as we do, as each piece is imbued with a little bit of their personality and life story.
Authentic. Timeless. One of a kind. This is the Threads of Peru promise. 5
sustainably & ethically sourced
alpaca fibre Alpaca was revered by the great Inca and used as royal fiber to dress Inca kings and queens.
Today, alpaca is still held in very high esteem. Threads of Peru uses this luxury fiber to produce scarves, shawls, ponchos and more, which are warm and soft to the skin. Alpaca fibre is stronger and warmer than sheep’s wool, and is second only to mohair in strength. It equals or surpasses typical thermic characteristics of cashmere and mohair.
6
sustainably & ethically sourced
N AT U R A L & P U R E Alpaca fiber is naturally hypo allergenic. Woven alpaca is water resistant, flame-resistant and highly breathable. It is washable, shrinks very little, and as it is free of lanolin, it tends to resist dust.
It’s no wonder the Inca royals cloaked themselves in this luxurious fiber!
natural dyes
MA DE BY HA ND
Threads of Peru buys from artisans who colour their wool using ancient dyeing techniques that have passed down through their Andean weaving villages for centuries.
The fibre from the herds of alpaca is colored using natural dyes made from flowers, insects and minerals found in the Cusco region. Some ingredients are sourced from other regions of Peru.
Using natural dyes helps to preserve ancient wisdom that is at risk of being lost due to the rise of cheap synthetics. Natural dyes are free from chemicals or synthetic irritants.
The spun yarns will be boiled for varying periods, depending on the dyeing material or mix of materials, and the colour desired. Often, fixatives such as salt are necessary to create colour fastness, alter hues, or intensify colour saturation. After the yarns have dried, they are re-spun, plied, and made into balls of yarn ready for weaving.
The Andes are filled with a great diversity of plant life and the Andean people have a rich knowledge of the use of these plants for dyeing their cloth.
