ArkLaTex Unknown Red River National Wildlife Refuge Bossier City, LA The Nature Center may be closed due to COVID19 restrictions, but the Red River National Wildlife Refuge off Arthur Ray Teague Parkway, located south of the Jimmy Davis Bridge in South Bossier is still a great place to clear your head, unwind, and enjoy the Earth in its raw form. Lake Caroline From fishing to hiking one of the six trails that wind around Lake Caroline and down the parkway, to bike riding or just sitting and enjoying the surroundings, there is something for you and the family to get into. The area just south of the Visitor’s Center, is a separate entrance from the parkway leading to the boat ramp, and provides covered sitting areas and large grassy common areas. Bring your boat or set up a lawn chair on the bank or pier to catch that next state record catfish. Lake Caroline is stocked with fish. These fish migrate to the lake because they are tired of the river current, and are just waiting to get snatched up for dinner. Raw chicken doesn’t work, or at least it doesn’t for me. The hiking trails are long enough to keep distance between parties, and provide gorgeous shots of the lake, river, and the remainder of surroundings. Perfect for nature photography (just don’t get too close to those gators), physical fitness, or just to detach from the modern technological world just minutes away from most of the Shreveport/Bossier metroplex area. When the nature center opens back up, it provides a great place to take the kids. Most activities are free, to include vast amounts of educational material. Given the close proximity to everything in Shreveport/Bossier, and its unusual feel of being completely engulfed in nature while still in the city, it is a can’t miss place to visit. Disregard the negative Google reviews for the refuge, as one person left a bad review when he walked past a sign that said “Caution, trail may be flooded ahead” and he found a flooded trail ahead. Yes, he spelled out that he saw the sign prior to almost getting lost in the mud. Another three-star review said that it was a great place to fish, that’s it. A mediocre review for a great place. So, get out and see for yourself, make your own review. I’ve tried two of the trails personally and will try the other four in the very near future. Maybe we will run across each other, and God willing, you won’t need to call 911 for me. Call ahead of time for information about fishing on Like Caroline. Some restrictions apply.
