Berthoud Resident
Tip Toe Thr ough t he Tulips w it h Ber t houd's Edna Kor t h Ph ot os & Ar t icle by Vir gin ia Hu ppe
Edna Korth, is a vivacious 97-year-old lady who is the ?flower of the crop? tending her six beautiful flower gardens occupying a quarter acre. Edna was born in Loveland in 1923 and in 2000 she moved back to Colorado, west of Berthoud. During her life she has lived in various parts of the United States. Her husband worked for the government and they moved around quite a bit. Edna learned to grow flowers in California?s cool, moist redwood area near San Francisco and in Missouri?s and Nebraska?s hot, humid weather. While in the moist California area she raised azaleas, rhododendrons, and fuchsias, a new gardening experience for her. In hot, humid Missouri her lush flowers thrived and in Nebraska the flowers loved the clean air. Gardening on the western slope was an entirely different experience, dry climate and high altitude gardening can be challenging. Edna started loving plants when she was very 6 young. She helped her mother garden on a dry Aug J2020 66THRIVELocal.com 7THRIVELocalmagazine.com THRIVELoveland.com Jan 2020 anuary 2020
land farm east of Campion, Colorado. ?Mother was an avid gardener and it was hard, because we had to water the plants by carrying buckets of water from the stock tank,? she remembers. Some of her favorite flowers are: bleeding heart, snapdragons, and pasque flowers with their interesting seed heads. She recommends zinnias, which do well in Colorado and add so much color to our hot summer landscape. Edna is also fond of sweet peas, lilacs, lily-of-the-valley, and fragrant roses for their alluring scent. She uses petunias, annual salvia, and alyssum for color in outdoor pots. When she plants flowers, she arranges plantings so there is continual color throughout the growing season. Her garden starts out with early blooms of daffodils and tulips. Next, the iris start blooming along with columbine, coral bells, snap dragons, and daisies. In the fall, black-eyed Susan chrysanthemums and zinnias keep color in the yard till frost. Edna was married to the late Robert Korth for 62 years and together they had three children. She has six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was a stay-at-home mom until the children were older. Then, she got into the work force as a registrar for the Marin Boy Scout Council Office while living California. In Missouri, she worked as a key punch operator for the IRS and as a secretary in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In Omaha, she was a secretary in the National Forest Service. Edna still volunteers at nursing homes as well as church. She is a 60+ year member of the Namaqua Chapter NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) and has done extensive volunteer work with that organization. While her gardens are sleeping, she loves to read Christian historic novels and takes care of 40?50 pots of over-wintering geraniums in her husband?s wood working shop. ?I have blooming plants all winter long,? she said. This ?flower lady? likes to share bouquets with neighbors, friends, and her church. She usually has cut flowers in her house year-round. Her daughter, Danette, helps her with the six flower beds a great deal now that Edna is older. But Edna doesn?t miss a trick; she is still out there digging up weeds. Edna is proof that one can thrive well into their 90's. She plans to continue to cultivate her beautiful flowers for many more seasons to come! 7 THRIVELocalmagazine.com Aug 2020

Mama Bear
by Dan it a Nixon Ph ot os by Lor i Jack son
There are priceless moments in a photographers career, when they have the opportunity to capture wildlife in their natural habitat. Windsor resident, Lori Jackson, seems to attract such opportunities again and again. She has captured stunning photographs of birds, eagles, moose, elk, deer, sheep, mountain goats and bears. During the summer, Lori visits Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) on a weekly basis to pursue her love of nature photography. "Photographing nature lights my heart on fire", explains Lori. On a recent visit to RMNP, Lori saw tourists pulled over "looking at something". That something turned out to be a brown mama bear and her two cubs. The cubs played and explored until mama bear realized that they were being watched by a growing group of humans, so she carefully lead them away. Lori is a bit of a mama bear herself. She has three children and seven grand children and she loves sharing nature with them. She takes them for hikes, bald eagle spotting, and on day trips into the park. Her ten year old grandson has taken up photography along side her, and is proving to be a natural at it! Lori's other passion is her garden. She has created a sanctuary that attracts all kinds of birds and small animals. "I enjoy sitting in my yard and watching the birds come and go", Lori shared. "I gardened with my grandparents, so working in my garden stirs up special memories of them!" Lori's nature photography is for sale and can be seen on her website at jaxonpics.com or you can call her at 970-290-3109 for more information.

The Joys of Belly Dancing! by Ph yllis Ken n em er
Sylvia Reyes - Maas with Tribe Aissa
Sylvia Reyes-Maas has loved dancing all her life. She wanted to take lessons as a child, but the cost was too much for her family. Then she married a man who does not dance. As Sylvia approached age 50, she decided that she was going to start dancing. She did not want to wake up at age 80 and regret never getting started.
About nine years ago, Sylvia joined with four other belly dancing enthusiasts to form Tribe Aissa. (Aissa is an African word for ?grateful.?) Three of the dancers are over 65 and two are in their late 40s. They like moving, creating, and laughing together. Dancing keeps them young. The ladies combine traditional belly dancing with a fusion of Spanish, Gypsy, and Eastern Indian movements as they develop their performances. They choose music to express the themes and design costumes out of clothing found in second-hand shops.
Sylvia needed to find a type of dance that did not require a partner and contained movements she enjoyed. That's when she discovered belly dancing! Bess Jeffrey-Jones, a beautician, was teaching classes for a small group of women in her shop after hours. Sylvia signed up and she has been dancing happily for over 15 years.
Tribe Aissa performed as part of the Emergence presentation in Greeley April 4th. They will participate in the annual SWAY (Supporting Women and Youth) program at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins in the fall. This charitable benefit is family-friendly, offering different types of belly dancing and other dance styles, such as samba dancing from Brazil. Belly dancing is popular in Northern Colorado. Classes are offered at Art Space and dance groups can be found on Facebook. For further information about belly dancing or upcoming performances, contact Sylvia at selahdancer@gmail.com or 970-214-2112. 12

Ret ir ement Account s and Divor ce If you have a retirement account through your
employer, you may note money going into your retirement account with each pay check. You work hard for the money in your retirement account. So, do you have to share it upon divorce? The answer is most likely, yes. Divorce courts are generally looking to divide all the marital assets and debts equitably or fairly. In most cases, this will include the court dividing retirement benefits between soon to be ex-spouses. The question of how the retirement accounts will be divided rests on how many other marital assets there are. Marital assets are generally assets acquired during a marriage and increases in value on assets that either spouse had prior to the marriage. If each spouse has about the same in their own retirement accounts, the court may say that each spouse keeps his or her own account. If one spouse stayed home to care for the parties?children and therefore has significantly less retirement than the other spouse, the spouses might expect closer to a 50/50 split.

Depending on the Order, the spouse with the new account may be able to cash out their portion (subject to various taxes and penalties), roll the amount into another retirement account of their choosing, or leave that amount where it is for their own retirement. So how are retirement accounts divided? There is a specific order called a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) that is submitted to the account?s plan administrator and to the Court for approval. Once approved, the retirement plan administrator will divide the retirement account as instructed. Generally, this will result in one spouse with 13 THRIVELocalmagazine.com Aug 2020

The Causes of Obesit y by Jolie Dek leva
You may be surprised to learn what causes obesity. Seventy-five percent of Americas are either overweight or obese which increases the risk of obtaining virtually all chronic disease. There has never been a stronger motivation to improve our health. Attaining a healthy weight may be the single most important health improvement you could make, but before you start moving toward that goal, let?s dispel some common myths. Obesity is not a disease of the affluent. Having more modern conveniences like smart phones and iPads have been associated with being overweight. True, few of us have to hike miles over vast mountains to seek out our next kill. Yet interestingly, statistics show an inverse relationship with income and obesity, the less one makes the more likely one is to become obese. Obesity is not a disease of sedentary people. There has never been a higher number of people belonging to gyms, participating in on-line pilates, or joining yoga events. Statistics show that there is no difference in activity levels from 25 years ago while Americans continue to get fatter.
2. Being healthy is the goal, not being a certain dream weight. 3. More important than how much we eat is the quality of our food. 4. Stop counting calories, read food labels instead. 5. Embrace your changes and love your life!! 6. Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. 7. Email me at joliedekleva.com to set up your free 50 minute Health Coaching consultation.
Ready to make small important healthy changes over time to make a big impact on your health? Follow Health Educator and Coach, Jolie Dekleva, Masters in Public Health, on facebook/Instagram Living Well Intentionally, website www.livingwellintentionally.com to subscribe to her emails Living Well with Jolie.
Obesity isn?t simply a matter of eating far too many calories. Over the century it?s been observed that as the Pima Indians, West Africans, Jamaicans, and other developing countries populations shift from eating a native, fatty real food diet to one that is less caloric and less varied, they become fatter while being undernourished. It?s true that we are eating slightly more calories than 50 years ago, but not enough to explain our expanding waistlines. Instead of being a disease of affluence, sedentary lifestyle, and eating too many calories, obesity is a disease of undernutrition. When we fill up with high calorie sugary manufactured foods that have very little nutrition we have no appetite for the nutritious foods our bodies need. Of course obesity is complex, hormones, past history of abuse, stress, sleep, and self image all play a part. To begin moving towards a healthy weight here are some factors to consider: 1. Know that you?re bioindividual. You?ll need to eat based on your age, gender, and ethnicity. What your body needs is not the same as your neighbor. 15 THRIVELocalmagazine.com Aug 2020

Camping w it h Sweet hear t Sams by Geor ge Ryan
Sweetheart Sams is the Loveland Chapter of the Good Sams Club. They are continuing to follow their passion for camping, glamping, and RVing in spite of restrictions, closures, and quarantines. Pandemic requirements have made the club drastically alter their 2020 schedule of activities. In spite of cancellations and modifications, they have managed to have enjoyable and safe outings while following the CDC and regional guidelines. By practicing social distancing, this lifestyle can be quite safe in light of the current situation. Campgrounds are inherently isolated and RVs and tents are relatively easy to keep clean and sanitized. Below photos taken at the June camp out, members of Sweethearts Sams enjoy s'mores around the campfire. As you can see from the photos, members are still enjoying the lifestyle, camaraderie, food, and fun that camping offers.
The club invites anyone that enjoys camping (be it in a tent, trailer, or motor home) to come check out the club. The Sweetheart Sams schedule must be flexible this year, therefore if you would like info about upcoming camping trips, contact the following individuals: George Ryan at george.ryan@sbcglobal.net or 303-710-8095 Loretta Wilson at Loretta.wilson@colostate.edu 18 or 970-667-667-3040 18 19THRIVELocalmagazine.com THRIVELoveland.com Jan 2020 anuary 2020 18 THRIVELocal.com AugJ2020

A Tale of Two Faw ns Ph ot os an d St or y by Kim Cof f ey
It was just another crazy, weird, depressing day during the Covid pandemic until I was blessed to witness an amazing wildlife miracle! I watched, with tears running down my cheeks, while a doe gave birth to twin fawns in my back yard. This unbelievable miracle of life, was happening right in front of me less than 30 yards from my window! As my tears ran, and my breath centered, I watched the twins take their first breaths and first steps. How great was life in this moment? The world suddenly disappeared and nothing else existed but this beautiful experience.
They were the tiniest, cutest things I had ever seen! They were so perfect, so pure, so vulnerable and dependent on the instincts of their mother and themselves. She kicked into her responsibilities, cleaning them and herself, cleaning the area, and feeding them. They fumbled around with their new experience, their new life, struggling to get stable on their feet.
As the days went on, I felt like their adoptive mother, hiding myself inside but watching from the windows. I worried, checked on them and continually stood in awe at this process. I could tell the twins apart by their ?personalities?; it was so fun to watch them. One enjoyed the rain, the other not so much and would run and hide. One would explore, the other kept to the safety of their hiding places. When after several days, the twins were here no more but their mother was, I tried not to worry. Well, today they were all back, in full glory, spunk, youth and excitement. I was thrilled to watch them bounce, jump and run around in my yard! And again, the world is good!
I?m not sure if animals ?know? love, but it sure looked and felt like they did, to me. There was an instant bond, I felt blessed to observe and take it in. I?ve been in the delivery room, with friends and always was in awe at the natural bond between mother and child, and I swear I saw it during this experience as well? it was beautiful. 21 THRIVELocalmagazine.com Aug 2020

Nat ional Par k s: Amer ica's Hidden Gems by Cr yst al Joh n son Ar ch es Nat ion al Par k , Ut ah
The highways and byways that make up the roads we travel can also take us to some of nature's most beautiful places, our National Parks. There are currently 61 National Parks in the United States and Colorado is home to four of these. These hidden gems offer adventures for all ages. Most parks offer fishing, camping, scenic photo opportunities, and picnic areas. When visiting our National Parks, you will find plenty of activities to keep you occupied. When my family and I visited Mesa Verde National Park we enjoyed the ranger guided tour of the cliff dwellings. The park ranger was knowledgeable and brought these dwellings to life. A visit to Rocky Mountain National Park offers amazing wildlife such as elk, deer, moose, and bears. Let us not forget the breathtaking views and hiking in Black Canyon National Park. Heading west from Colorado, you can visit four of Utah?s National Parks. They are close enough to each other to be able to visit them all in one day. The red rocks and breathtaking views of Arches National Park, Canyon Lands National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park make this drive well worth it. Driving north from Colorado to Wyoming you can visit Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole. Getting to your National Parks is easier than you may think. You can drive, take a bus tour, take the train or rent an RV. You can stay at a lodge, yurt or cabin in the park. Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the beauty of the outdoors. Get your National Park Pass at nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm. If planning your own National Park vacation feels overwhelming and confusing, reach out to Cruise Planners to tap into our knowledge and experience at no cost to you!
