Meet Loveland Resident Nancy Lichina By: Amber Mason

You could easily mistake Nancy Lichina for a Colorado native. At 88 years young, she?s active, adventurous, intelligent, funny, spunky, down-to-earth and she has a passion for helping others. She moved to Loveland in 2009 to be closer to friends and stays active with things like golf, playing the piano and swimming. In the years since. She has enjoyed volunteering at Sculpture in the Park, Medical Center for the Rockies and a local church. Her grandmother had an expression that has stuck with her throughout her life, ?There?s a lot of getting in giving?. Nancy is a person who enjoys being able to give back and does so with a sincerity that shines through her. During the 60+ years she lived in the Los Angeles area, Nancy worked many meaningful jobs such as organizing the 1984 Olympics Velodrome venue at Cal State Dominguez Hills, coordinator for the Board of Directors of Josephson Institute of ethics, director of volunteers of a community-based hotline for

young callers who were suicidal. She is especially proud of the work she did as a small-group coordinator at her church where she created a woman?s support group that still meets to this day, ?This was a very meaningful thing in my life personally as a single mother, raising three boys and having that kind of contact with other women that truly supported, loved and trusted one another to the degree that it is still going on today?. Today Nancy loves watching families play golf on the local course where she owns a home. She continues to stay active and connected to community, carrying herself with a sense of peace about her life. She says ?it?s almost a tranquility of spirit I feel like I have because my life has been as rich as it has. Lots and lots of good things, many, many tough, hard things, but mostly I feel the blessings of being 88 is a pretty big blessing.? It?s a sentiment we can relate to, having Loveland community members like Nancy, is a blessing for us all.

CoCo Meow By: Coco M eow

Pr ecious Pets

Hi, m y Nam e is Coco M eow , my parents Mark and Danita Nixon rescued me from the Cheyenne animal shelter when I was about six months old. I've been with them a year now. Prior to that, I was in a home with dogs, and my old owner said I "attacked" their dogs, so they sent me to the shelter. Geesh, I was only a kitten. My name was originally "Sparkles". Do I look like a "Sparkles" to you? My dad wanted to name me Coco (like hot coco) because of my color, but my mom didn't think it sounded like a girls name, so she said lets add "meow', like Coco Channel. Coco Meow, get it? I'm quite happy in my new home. Since I am the only "child", I pretty much rule the roost. The only time that really changes is when my parents' grandson comes over and tries to bond with me. He's amusing for the most part. He has built a protective suit out of boxes so he can watch me, but I can't get to him. Yawn. One of my favorite things to do is to sneak attack the humans in my home. It keeps them on their toes and helps them to remember who the boss REALLY is! It's entertaining, for sure. They never know where or when I'm going to pop out! Anymeow, it is very nice to meet you, I hope you will introduce us to YOUR precious pet in a future article! Local Artist

Heat her Rubald Tell u s abou t you r ar t : I crochet and fuse post-consumer plastic bags into functional purses, totes, wallets etc and also large art pieces and displays. A large component of what I do is to educate with displays and workshops and I enjoy speaking about my overarching ?assignment from the universe? to use beauty and wit to call attention to the earth?s garbage problem and to inspire people to reduce, reuse and recycle. How lon g h ave you been doin g t h is w or k ? Since 2006 in some fashion. I began with crocheting chunky beach bags, etc. I started fusing the plastic in 2008. When I moved to Loveland, the art community here inspired me to branch out from functional to artistic pieces and installations.

thing I had ever heard of it stuck with me. Several years later when I ran out of yarn and had a closet of grocery bags, I was moved to start experimenting with plastic bags. Little did I know that this slight curiosity would grow to an ?assignment from the universe?. Seeing something in cast-offs and trash is a magical thing to me - like spinning gold out of strawlike a re-birth. It is also often the most economical and environmentally conscience choice as well. Using trash as my medium allows me to call attention to issues of waste and misuse, but it also allows me great freedom as an artist. I don?t have a lot of predecessors in my medium that dictate what is wrong or right to do with post-consumer plastic bags, and I because I can collect large quantities of the material for free, I am allowed to create very big and without limits.

Wh at in spir ed you t o get st ar t ed? Wh er e can you r ar t be pu r ch ased? I was captivated as a kid when we made puppets out of upside down Ivory dishwashing soap bottles. Many years later my mother told me about a purse that someone had given her that was crocheted out of plastic bags and although I thought it was the ugliest sounding

Top 10 List of Task s t o do Online

Innovation

By: M ar yjo M or gan

We have the world literally at our fingertips. Between computers, tablets and smartphones, we can look up nearly anything online, pay our bills or get GPS directions with access to the internet. As a Loveland-based "connected" senior, here is my Top Ten List of tasks accomplished online: 1. See grandkids' drawings when we Facetime. Stay connected with far-flung family and friends and reconnect with former neighbors and schoolmates via social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.). 2. Manage finances and set up automatic bill pay for recurring expenses (credit card, mortgage, utilities, etc.). 3. Shop, compare, purchase and take delivery on anything from groceries and clothing to sporting goods and electronics - without leaving home!

4. Have live doctor 's consultation online or make appointments with M.D., DDS, beauty salon, car maintenance, etc. 5. Share photos, videos, music, etc. via WeTransfer.com, a free online file-sharing service. 6. Contact customer service via online chat options to enable faster solutions.

7. Explore, learn, read and entertain! See places to visit (beach cam) or follow the birth of a giraffe (zoo cam). Find a YouTube streaming video for household repairs and DIY instructions. Find and download e-books (OverDrive, Libby, Hoopla, etc.) to save time and fuel. Carry multiple books on your phone and read at night without turning on the light. Enjoy streaming movies on Netflix. 8. Access E-Tickets (download airline apps) or make dining reservations (Nowait). 9. Stay current on local and world events via news aggregates (Google News, The Best of NPR, etc.). 10. Utilize online tools (ZamZar.com) to convert or change file formats (.docx to .PDF, .PDF to .jpg, etc.). Edit photos using online photo editors like GIMP, Picasa or Adobe Photoshop. Take screen shots on a Mac with Grab.

Since 2015, the City of Loveland has been exploring the possibility of bringing broadband to the community. Final plans will be presented to City Council Oct. 23. Be sure to ask your questions, voice your opinions online at CityOfLoveland.org/Broadband or by attending the Oct. 4 Town Hall and Telephone Town Hall at 6 p.m.

Local Her o

Sweet hear t Saved Him By: Br ad Hoopes George Fender was physically in the middle of the war in the Pacific, but his mind was constantly on Colorado. More specifically, on a beautiful girl in Colorado named Dorothy Koenig. George had no connections to Colorado prior to the war, he grew up outside Pittsburgh. As a young kid, he used to sneak into the Pittsburgh Pirates?stadium where he once met and sat in the dugout with Babe Ruth. After Pearl Harbor, George gave up promising college football career and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was sent to Colorado A&M (CSU) for schooling, where Dorothy first caught his eye while serving him at the Aggies?cafe. They soon fell in love. When it was time for him to leave, he told her that if he makes it back he will marry her. She promised she will wait for him.

Altogether George flew 49 missions. On his thirty-second mission, his plane is hit and the crew is forced to bail out. They managed to elude the Japanese for the next thirty days before being rescued. Because of this experience, he could have gone home. George went on instead to volunteer for another seventeen missions! Through all of this, Dorothy is always on his mind. ?I constantly looked at her picture that she had sent me. We wrote each other every chance we got. She is why I made it back from the war.?, George says, his voice trailing off. After completing that 49th mission, he felt he wouldn?t survive a fiftieth. He finally decided it was time to go home to his Dorothy.

They have now been married for 68 years and have two children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. George had a 23 year career in Loveland real estate. George and Dorothy are inseparable and seldom apart. George often thinks now about the various people he served with, those lost over there, and especially about his crew. ?A day doesn?t go by that I don?t think about my crew.? said George.

Est at e Planning 10 1 Meet Jorgensen, Brownell & Pepin, P.C., THRIVE Loveland?s monthly legal contributor. For over 25 years, our full-service law firm is proud to have assembled a group of dedicated and passionate lawyers. With three office locations serving Northern Colorado, our firm is known for achieving favorable results in and out of the courtroom. Each month we will present a new legal topic, the facts associated with Colorado Law, and how the attorneys at Jorgensen, Brownell & Pepin, P.C. are able to assist you with your needs. This month we focus on Estate Planning. Estate Planning 101 Planning one?s estate, including tackling all the paperwork and legal considerations, can appear a daunting task. According to a study cited on Forbes.com, less than half of Americans have a Will, and that?s only one aspect of an estate plan. Planning your estate accomplishes more than just ensuring your own preferences? it also helps your family by saving them undue emotional distress and confusion and ensures they are provided for when you pass.

For example, you can elect to have various forms of life support withheld completely, maintained for a certain number of days, or maintained indefinitely. Contact the experienced estate planning attorneys at Jorgensen, Brownell & Pepin, P.C. today for help creating your estate plan. And thereafter, always remember to review and update your estate plan as your situation or desires change, such with the birth of a grandchild, purchase of a second home, etc.

A typical estate plan is composed of at least the following instruments: 1. Will A Will essentially declares who you wish to receive your property, including any charitable donations or specific gifts you wish to make, and who will manage such distributions on your behalf. The Will also states who you wish to be guardian of your children in the event you and their other parent are gone. 2.
