Pr eser ving Memor ies
Legacy Wr it ing by Dean n a Est es
A memoir is a historical account written from your personal knowledge and your perspective. It is about you? lessons learned, experiences, memories, values, and opinions. Writing about your life can be fun, simple, and even cathartic. A memoir can document and preserve your life experiences for future generations.
will know the story unless you share it. No photos? Perhaps an item of special significance to you. An event? celebratory or tragic. A fork in the road where you had to make a choice whether good or bad. Influences in your life: family, friends, or anyone who touched your life. There are no restrictions.
Legacy writing has no set of rules. You can start with a single photograph. When you look at the photo, what do you see and feel? Why do you have this picture? How does it make you feel? What was the occasion? How did that one A memoir is not an autobiography. It does not moment captured in a photo affect your life? record your entire life. You start with snippets. Did you learn anything from or in that moment? Think of it as an umbrella with spokes. The arc A picture is worth a thousand words, but no one of the umbrella is your life and each spoke an incident. You can have a large umbrella with many spokes or a small one with few. YOU choose the events most relevant to your life and shape those according to the message you want to convey. Remember, legacy writing is your story. Be real, be truthful, be vulnerable, be relatable. When you speak from the heart, you connect to the hearts of many. Everyone has a story to tell. Write your life so others may learn from you and cherish your memories as much as you do. Deanna Estes is a book designer who collaborates with authors to get their book branded like the pros. A Home Built & Filled w it h Love by Dan it a Nixon Ph ot os by AM A Divin e Ph ot ogr aph y
Bill and Nicci of Berthoud, CO have a home that was truly built and filled with love. Their main home was originally a one bedroom, one bath, 600 square foot carriage house. As a contractor, Bill was able to design an addition that created their beautiful new two-bedroom two-bath home. Nicci was insistent that their home not look like a brand-new house, but instead would look like it was built in the 1920's to match homes in the area. Bill also designed and built two additional buildings on the property, a shed and the "little house" shown below.

Bill and Nicci work together to create things for their home and garden. According to Bill, "Nicci comes up with the idea, and I build it." Nicci loves to decorate. The inside of Bill and Nicci?s home is beautifully decorated in a warm and inviting style. Nicci's knack for decorating can also be experienced in the yard. Nicci?s greatest passion is working in the garden. She loves flowers. She explains, ?gardening is my happy place. I love digging in the dirt. I got that from my grandmother, she was an Iowa farm wife.? Bill and Nicci traveled all over the world and the U.S. on a mortorcycle. They have given that up, but Bill still enjoys riding a small motorcycle to get around Berthoud .

"Pear l" by M ar k Nixon
Pearl is a beautiful replica of a 1934 Mercedes-Benz grand touring roadster, hand-built by Loveland resident Ron Schlattman. Ron regaled a colorful account of building the car and the journey to Vail, CO for a 4th of July parade. The story begins in 1990 in a Wisconsin shop Ron?s friend owned, it was the only place large enough to build a 10? 8? 4000-pound car that required a forklift to unload the parts from 3
semi-trucks. When Ron told his sister about the elegant convertible he was building, she asked him if it could be ready for the 4th of July celebration the following year. She wanted to ride in the car for the parade instead of the horses she and her husband, the Mayor of Vail, had ridden the year before. Ron felt confident he could build the car over the next 13 months and drive it to Vail in plenty of time, what could go wrong he thought...let the adventure begin. Ron arranged his schedule to spend the next year working nights, weekends and holidays to complete Pearl. Just days before the parade, Ron took Pearl out for her maiden voyage. The farthest he and Pearl had ventured out was around the block; they are now about to embark on a 1000-mile journey to the Rocky Mountains, what could go wrong? Ron and Pearl discovered a few things along the way that all newly hand-built cars might experience such as trying to keep the driver ?s suicide door from opening while driving 60 miles per hour down the highway. Despite some minor mechanical issues, they made it to Vail in time for the parade. Ron was proud of Pearl and what he had accomplished, and his sister agreed? .but she was happiest when she was able to sit down comfortably the day after the parade.

Celebrations!
96 and St ill Going St r ong by Dan it a Nixon
Don Smith turned 96 years young on July 12th. Don could literally be the model for aging with grace. He is originally from Long Beach, CA, he moved to Loveland in 1997 to be near his daughter. He is the father of two daughters, has four grand-children, and eight great-grand children. Don is passionate about reading, history, music and travel. This summer, Don is making his annual drive from Colorado to Eugene, OR for a week at a music festival. Don is in the process of downsizing from his home into a 55+ community. ?It?s time for a
change in my lifestyle?, explains Don. He has found that maintaining his home and yard has just gotten to be too much for him to manage. He is looking forward to the move. ?It?s going to be a good thing?, Don shares. He expects he will do even more reading once he has settled in to his new apartment and, ?no more weeding?. When asked what he attributes his aging well to, Don explains, ?My body has done well. I am fortunate in my genetic inheritance. I owe a lot to my mother. What a marvelous woman she was.? Don enjoys eating out and spending time with friends and family. His two favorite restaurants in the area are the Cracker Barrel and Olive Garden. If you see Don out in the community, we encourage you to wish this spunky 96 year old a happy birthday! 18 18 Towns

Tai Chi by T.A Ru st in
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that is better known as a form of meditation, exercise, and physical training. Unlike karate or taekwondo, Tai Chi is practiced with a number of distinct positions done in order, called a ?Form.? The Form is practiced slowly; the emphasis during practice is on maintaining balance, not on fighting. M edical r esear ch Knowing that falls often result from impaired balance, specialists in the care of seniors began to look at the possible value of teaching Tai Chi to seniors. The results were eye-opening. The first such study, published in 1996, showed that Tai Chi practice by seniors helped them improve their balance and reduce falls. A follow-up study in 2003 compared the effectiveness of Tai Chi training versus an exercise program for residents of a care facility. The people who took the Tai Chi training had 47 percent fewer falls than those in the exercise group. A study published in 2003 showed that seniors taking a Tai Chi class had less joint stiffness and greater flexibility than those getting usual care. A more recent study showed that seniors taking a Tai Chi class for six months had 55 percent fewer falls than those taking an exercise class. Wh y does Tai Ch i pr act ice h elp pr even t f alls?

Tai Chi teaches how to maintain balance, and how to stay stable while moving. Learning the Tai Chi Form takes a few months of diligent practice, but the advantages are substantial for seniors with difficulties maintaining balance.

The Estes Park Village Band has been entertaining locals and visitors to Estes Park for more than 35 years. Made up of volunteer musicians, a majority being seniors, the Band is led by three experienced conductors: Chuck Varilek, Jeff Klintberg, and Loren Johnson. The Three Conductors come from different backgrounds but have teamed up in Estes Park because of their love of music. Chuck retired after 36 years as a band director, the last 25 years as the Director of Bands for the Estes Park High School. Chuck loves making music as well as conducting. ?It's what I do,? he said. ?It's an essential part of my life, and I'm not done living ? Jeff didn't even know about the Band when he moved to Estes Park, but he soon joined the woodwind section, playing clarinet and saxophone, and then began conducting as well. ?I love doing it,? he said. The Village Band plays an important role in keeping Estes Park a vibrant community, entertaining in Performance Park, in the Rodeo Parade, and with the High School Band for the Christmas concert. ?It provides a place for them to share their music with everyone,? said Chuck. Loren added, ?There is no age limit on producing fine, enjoyable music.? And leading the way are The Three Conductors. The Estes Park Village Band performs it's final summer season concert in August in Performance Park. Admission is always free. THRIVE Loveland & Surrounding Towns
