Introduction Hello! My name is Kathy Tran and I am a junior at Los Amigos High School! I am working on a social impact project with Close The Gap Foundation. My social impact project is to address mental health issues among teenagers for adults to view. I have hosted two workshops where over 25 students have attended.
My goal for this project to to educate and spread awareness about this important topic to high school students and those in their communities
Here is some content on my social media page
How is your mental health? Comparing from 2020 to 2021.
Student 1: Garden Grove High School My mental health in 2020 was definitely horrible; I was already struggling a lot in 2019, so when I experienced great demotivation and grade drops in 2020, I felt very unwell emotionally and mentally. It would then affect my physical health, obviously. However, I managed to pull myself together during 2021, and I'm still working on improving myself.
Student 2: Los Amigos High School I would say it is a lot better, but there are days that are hard. When the pandemic started, it took a toll on my mental health because it messed up my routine, but slowly throughout quarantine I was seeing progress, of course it was not always linear. Through the pandemic I learned a lot about myself, and others, with the information that I have learned I will use it each day.
Student 3: Fountain Valley High School As of lately, it's been pretty bad :(( I genuinely don't know why because I have been getting everything I want, but I just feel so extremely empty and drained. I love being around people, but I get so tired of feeling obligated to make people happy and laugh all the time. I recently got diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety so hopefully, I'll start getting medication for that!
Student 4: Bolsa Grande
MY mental health worsened from the 2020-2021 school year because it was a different experience for me, which made me stressed out and lost motivation to continue school work.
Do you ever think that it would help if you had a trusted adult to speak to? Student 1: Fountain Valley High School Yes, it would help if I had someone to talk to besides my coaches and teammates.
Student 2: Temple City High School
No, I don’t think having a trusted adult helps. I feel that even if an adult is trusted, it’s difficult to talk to them because of how different they are from me. They’re much older and sometimes don’t understand the current situations or “gen z culture”. It can also be awkward to talk to them.
Student 3: New York University
Growing up I attached myself to mentors that I could trust with my thoughts, feelings, and questions. I felt more secure when I had someone older than I could bounce nice ideas of thoughts off of, and I knew they had my best intentions in mind.
Student 4: Los Amigos High School
Yes, I know that it would help a lot if I had a trusted adult to speak to.
Is there a trusted adult at school?
Follow-up question from the one above. If yes, what does that trusted adult do that makes you feel so comfortable. If no, what do you think would help you open up to an adult if you ever needed to?
Student 1: Temple City High School I think that the trusted adult helps me feel more comfortable when they talk about themselves and issues that they have as well. This helps me connect and sympathize with them because it shows that they can be relatable. It also helps when they are knowledgeable about social media culture and recent events because it creates more similarities between us.
Student 3: Fountain Valley High School I can't point out a singular reason, but the overall energy they radiate makes me feel comfortable talking to them.
Student 2: Los Amigos High School I would feel comfortable talking to an adult who is open minded, someone that will not try to push their point of view on me or make me feel guilty for the way I feel towards things.
Student 4: Los Amigos High School The trusted adult always checks in on me and it's not just a simple check-in, it is a thought-out check-in. She always makes sure my voice is heard and that I am seen and for the longest time I never felt either one of those things. She gives me as much if not more trust than I give her, which means the absolute world. It put me in a level of comfort that I never thought I could nevertheless need.
How have people at school been supportive with your mental health? What else could they do? Student 1: Los Amigos High School
Student 2: Los Amigos High School
Our principal and some teachers make posts on social media about mental health which I greatly appreciate.
I can't point out a singular reason, but the overall energy they radiate makes me feel comfortable talking to them.
Student 3: Los Amigos High School
Student 4: Temple City High School
They have been great! I just want to be treated normally like everyone else outside of school and inside. But when projects come and tests come I don’t want teachers to be all on me like, checking if I understand every minute, that’s what happened last year. It got pretty annoying but they can always check on me in about 15 or 20 minutes. That way I can actually get something done. :)
Student 5: Bolsa Grande High School People at school made my mental health better by acknowledging my boundaries.
They have been supportive by giving us the resources we need to deal with our mental health. They have also been approachable and I feel that I can consult them easily. I feel like there is not a lot more they could do without being too invasive or making students uncomfortable. What they have been doing is supportive enough.
Student 6: Fountain Valley High School My school could have made mental health resources more easily accessible and advertised them more.
The top photo is an introduction meeting where I explained my goal for this project and the objective. This photo at the bottom is where me and my mental health speaker discussed about stressors, coping mechanisms, and social activities.

Meet Kiki! She was at my second workshop to explain to the participants about mental health. She elaborated what goes on during the teenage years. From stressors, academic issues, to coping mechanisms. She assisted me on making it known that most people struggle with the same thing and that it is OK for how we are feeling. If you are wondering more about her then check out her website which is linked in my linktree in my instagram @throoanewlens or you can directly contact her on her instagram which is @Thrivewithkiki.
