HHHHH, VALENTINE’S DAY, the one day of the year where it’s socially acceptable to be overly loved up and outwardly romantic to your better half. Now, if you’re a biker, your other half will generally be your motorcycle, with everything else just a distraction. If you’re on the distraction side of said equation, you might be looking for a romantic gift to try and win back some of the affection that’s no doubt wholly taken over by a machine, or maybe you could be dropping some not-so-subtle hints to your partner about what they can get you if they really love you. Either way, our wonderful advertisers have got you covered with some fantastic sweet deals the month of February, like marked down preowned bikes, service specials, discounts on parts, jewelry, apparel, and much more, so check them out for gifts for all your loved ones! Now that the craziness of the holidays is over, it’s easy to get a little stir-crazy waiting for riding season to come back around. But never fear, because events are starting to spring up everywhere, like swap meets, bike shows, and racing. Come see us at the Clarksville Indoor/Outdoor Swap Meet on Saturday, Feb. 24th at the Clarksville Speedway, we’ll have the trailer set up there. On Saturday, Mar. 2nd we’ll be set up at the Flat Track Races in Shelbyville at the Calsonic Arena. Then you don’t want to miss the Spring Thaw Bike Show & Swap Meet on March 23rd at the Wilson Co. Expo Center. Take a look at the events page for more fun things to do! Be sure and check out the Thunder Roads® Sudoku on page 31 of this issue for a chance to win some cool Thunder Roads® Tennessee prizes, like bottle and can koozies, shot glasses, patches, and more! Just mail your completed puzzle to us each month and we will draw one winner each month from all the correctly completed puzzles. Good luck and congrats to last month’s winner Trish Stanley and this month’s winner Butch Brann! Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone from all of us at Thunder Roads® Tennessee! We hope your day is filled with love, happiness and motorcycles! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

“BLOOD IN-BLOOD OUT” When we hear this phrase, we relate it to a street gang, motorcycle club, or organize crime as part of an initiation. Most people don’t know that this phrase started in the Bible as a “Blood Covenant.” It is a contract, promise, a vow, an oath made in blood, not by signing a piece of paper. It means there must be blood shed to get into it and it’s your blood shed to get out. The Old Testament is known as the Old Covenant and the New Testament is known as the New Covenant. Both Covenants were made in blood. Gen.15:9-18 we see the Abrahamic Covenant (the Promise), Abram took several animals and cut them in half making a bloody mess; “When the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace and a burning lamp that passed between those two pieces. In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram…” Then we see the Mosaic Covenant (the laws) in Ex.24:6-8 “…and Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, behold the Blood of the Covenant which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.” Then in the New Testament we see the New Covenant of Grace, this Covenant was made in the blood of Jesus Christ. Both the Old Covenant of law and the New Covenant of Grace were made in blood. The Old Covenant used the blood of animals, but the New Covenant was made in the blood of Jesus Christ making it the strongest Covenant. Matt.9:17 neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runs out, and the bottles perish.” They ended up with no wine and no container, they ended up with a big “O” by losing both. The same is true when we try and combined the Old Covenant laws with the New Covenant Grace. This is why some of the modern day Churches are not as powerful as the early church. Today we got performance based ministries, emotional based ministries, and spiritual word based ministries. Baby boomers like the performance based ministries, the millennials prefer

the emotional based ministries, but few accept the spiritual word based ministries. God’s people must be careful not to exchange the cheaper for the deeper. Gal.3:11 “No man is justified by the law.” Vs. 13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law.” Rom.10:4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.” Rom. 4:3 “Abraham believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” John 6:28-29 “What shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered; this is the work of God that ye believe?” It’s not your righteousness, its God’s righteousness. It’s not in what you do, it’s what He has done! God made this so simple that religion had to mess it up, all you got to do is “BELIEVE.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bippity and Boppity- These two are not what you expect to be a typical pair. They have a friendship that knows no boundaries. They are very loving and loyal to each other and their human friends. They walk great on a leash and love to run and romp in the off leash play yard. Both appear to be house trained with wonderful house manners. This pair would make a great addition to any family. While they would love to stay together they understand it may not be in the stars for them. Haxtun- A gorgeous boy inside and out. Haxtun does great with all his human friends and loves to be out and about. Haxtun is a type of herding dog but has since retired or wanted to play more than work. He is 2-3 years old and friendly with everyone he meets. He likes to play in spurts, yet is more eager for pets and love. He is always up for a long walk or just lying beside you watching reruns of Law and Order. He has pretty good house manners for what we can tell. Hershey- This gentle older gal

found herself in the care of The White County Animal Shelter when her owner passed away. She is a kind and gentle and loves her human friends. She was able to shed 15-20 pounds and get down to a healthy weight, then one day while playing she hurt her knee. She has had a major knee surgery and is recovering in a foster home. Hershey is about 5-6 years old and already spayed and up to date on all her shots and monthly preventatives. She appears to be house trained and she loves to lay on her big pillow bed and catch a few Z’s, her most favorite is getting ear massages and giving kisses in return. Murphy- This little cutie is

Murphy. He is 100% puppy. He is friendly and loves to play, eat, sleep, and you know the rest, just like every puppy ever. He is very smart and does great on a leash for a little fella his age, 14-16 weeks. He loves to chase his toys and sometimes his tail. He is pretty calm for the most part but every now and again the zoomies come out. A little one on one training with his new human and Murphy will make a great lifelong companion. February 2019

Perry- This handsome boy has been calling the White County Animal Shelter home since February 7, 2016. He is a wonderful boy, he has learned to play with toys and he LOVES to swim and splash in the pond. He knows a few basic commands such as sit and wait. He loves to play fetch and has finally honed his catching skills. Perry is a 6-8 years old, and a big boy at 70 pounds. He is neutered and ready to find his new family and happy ever after. Perry would prefer an only dog home as he has so much love to give and he is definitely a ladies man. Rykker- This dapper gentleman has been call the White County Animal Shelter home since April 3, 2017. Rykker is one of the most well behaved dogs at the shelter. He walks great on a leash and doesn’t seem to have a care in the world about the other dogs around him. It is assumed that Rykker never received much love and affection as a younger pup. He is not sure how to receive the kindness. He appears to be house trained with other house manners to match. He is gentle in many ways. Rykker would love for his new people to find him and give him the loving home and the happy ending he so desperately longs for. Vanda- This little beauty will melt your heart with one look into her eyes. She is a wonderful girl. She is quiet, well mannered, house trained and loves to be with her people. She is already spayed. She walks great on a leash and seems to do well around other animals. She is 100% beauty and brains. She knows a few commands and is very eager to please. She is loyal and affectionate.

Bullet Points

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

T

HIS EDITION will be coming out on February 1. By my calculation, that is roughly seven weeks before Spring. We are in the midst of planning several bike trips for 2019, the big one being a ride to Texas to enjoy the scenery and curves of The Twisted Sisters – one of the top five motorcycle roads in the United States! On our way back to Tennessee we will be cutting through Oklahoma and Arkansas where we will ride two more gems: The Talimena National Scenic Byway and the Pig Trail. All this travel will take us through areas we do not know, so situational awareness becomes very important. And it is important whether you are traveling somewhere you are unfamiliar with – or at your local coffee shop. If you are reading this, you are most likely a defender of our Second Amendment. You may even conceal carry a handgun when you leave the house. If so, congratulations on taking your safety, and the safety of your family and friends seriously. We all know that the best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. But do not fall into the same trap many people do: that carrying a handgun makes you “bullet-proof.” It simply does not. In fact, if you have become lazy because of that gun on your hip, you may be in more danger than an unarmed citizen who is very vigilant. Vigilance is the key to your safety and those with you – and vigilance starts with situational awareness. According to Wikipedia, Situational Awareness is defined as: “…the perception of environmental elements and events with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time, or some other variable, such as a predetermined event.” And while situational awareness is a key component to riding a motorcycle safely - Eg. Is that car approaching from the side road going to run the stop sign and pull out in front of me? – many riders leave their situational awareness with their helmets when they climb off their scoot. In other words, they become unaware of everything going on around themselves. Increasing your situational awareness starts with PAYING ATTENTION! Pay attention to everything going on around you. If you are like many people, that smart phone you are self-absorbed in is putting you at risk. Do not walk around in public with all of your attention focused on your social media networks. I have walked up to friends who are on their iPhone and greeted them several times before they were even aware I was there. That same person will never be able to defend against an attack by a thug if they are only paying attention to liking their friends’ Facebook posts. It would be helpful to look at the way a thug intent on doing harm thinks.

February 2019

First, you must think of these people as being like a tiger which is stalking their next meal. Like that tiger, they purposely scope out the weakest animal in a pack before they spring forward to attack. Shit-bag thugs do the same thing. If they are going to commit an armed robbery they will look for the softest of targets – that person least likely to defend themselves when they spring forward to attack. Perhaps it’s that person peering intently into their smartphone. Perhaps it’s that person walking along the dark sidewalk talking to their girlfriend on the phone. Or perhaps it’s that person in the restaurant sitting with their back to everyone else. These are their easiest targets - those who due to their total lack of situational awareness have left themselves the most vulnerable - and least likely to be able to fight back. Even if they are packing a concealed handgun, they will be unable to act quickly enough to use it in their defense – and may even have their gun taken away from them and used against them. Here are some suggestions which will help you increase your situational awareness: • Avoid dangerous areas – Do not put yourself into a situation where you will be more likely to have to defend yourself. • Remove your smartphone from your consciousness when you are in a public place. It is okay, even preferable, to have it with you, but your attention should not be focused on it. • If you are walking into your corner gas station put your phone in your pocket. Look around the establishment before you enter. Is it well lit? How many people are in there? Are there any people who look dangerous? (Yes, it is okay for you to profile people.) What can you use for a barrier if the proverbial “shit-hits-the-fan.” Where are the exits? Have you examined the people present well enough to describe them for a police report? If not, you are not situationally aware of your surroundings. • Do not sit where you have blind spots. Avoid sitting with your back to everyone else in that restaurant. I personally like to find a corner table and have my back to the corner. • Events change and you need to change with them. Closely examine newcomers entering the restaurant, pub or gas station. • Most importantly remove anything which can become a distraction. The more you practice situational awareness, the easier it becomes. Be aware of the people around you. Be aware of the structure you are in. Search out exits. Scan faces. Stay away from dark areas where you can easily be ambushed. Do not ever become the prey because your concentration is elsewhere. Until next month, ride safe and keep the shiny side up! RIDER SAFETY

MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES IN TENNESSEE

J

anuary found me at Montgomery Belle State Park for our annual Motorcycle Rider Education Program coach recertification. On this gloomy, cold Saturday morning I sat in a room with other Tennessee motorcycle safety coaches disheartened to hear that fatal motorcycle crashes had increased in 2018. 2018 experienced 161 fatal crashes with 164 fatalities on Tennessee’s roadways. (Three of these fatalities were passengers.) This number is up from 2017 by 29 fatalities. The data presented here is from TITAN (Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network) and the TN Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Research, Planning and Development Division.

Motorcycle Fatalities in Tennessee 2018 Total Motorcycle Crashes 2018 Fatal Crashes Fatalities Alcohol Related Fatalities Not Helmet/Improper Helmet Fatalities Speed Related

A motorcycle accident typically occurs from a combination of contributing factors. These factors include, but are not limited to: • Alcohol use • Not wearing a helmet (or improper helmet) • Speed • Day vs. night • Dry vs. wet roads • If the motorcyclist is tired (or angry) • Rider action (inexperience, improper passing, overcorrecting, inattentive) Motorcycle preventive maintenance (tire pressure) There are a number of things that you can do to prevent being a statistic in 2019. First up, go back to school. If you are a new rider you will greatly benefit from a rider education course. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation and many HarleyDavidson dealerships offer safety courses. Been riding for a while? Experienced riders benefit from refresher courses as we often become complacent the longer we ride. One additional benefit for new and experienced riders is the discount from your insurance company for passing a motorcycle safety course. February 2019

Wear all of your gear all of the time. Long pants with boots that cover your ankles, a jacket made for motorcycle riding, gloves with all the fingers covered, eye protection and your DOT approved helmet. Regarding your helmet, a full-face helmet is going to give you the most protection. Helmets should be replaced every three to five years and after a crash. Do you have a habit of sitting your helmet on your seat? Just falling from three feet is detrimental to the integrity of your helmet. When you’re thinking of your gear, think of being seen as well. Many motorists report, “I just didn’t see the motorcycle”. As motorcyclists, we can help those motorists see us by wearing bright colors with reflective materials and presenting yourself in the lane so that you are most visible to motorists. You’ve taken the safety course and you’ve got the right gear, what else can you do? Be alert! It’s easy to get comfortable and settled in to your seat enjoying the road and scenery, be ready for lane changes and swerves. Watch ahead for potholes and other road hazards. And, always be on the lookout for distracted motorists. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation teaches the majority of crashes occur in intersections and curves. Being cautious when approaching these and adjusting your speed will be of great benefit should you need to respond quickly to a situation. Alcohol is never a good idea when you are riding your motorcycle. Judgment and vision are impaired after one drink and this puts you at a greater risk. Watch your speed and be ready for those turns, curves, swerves, road hazards, motorists, deer, dogs ……. I’m sure you’ve noticed those black marks on the asphalt going into curves and you know why and how they got there. Proper speed for your skill and experience level goes a long way in getting you to your destination.

During the cold, rainy, snowy days of winter take a few minutes to find a safety course and register for it. Here in North East Tennessee where this rider coach lives, safety courses can be found at Appalachian Rider Education Program, Knoxville Rider Education Program and Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson, you can find them with a quick Internet search. Check out your gear and think about driving habits. As you look forward to a day just warm enough to get out on your motorcycle, remember safe riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

BOBAROSA SALOON – EAST TENNESSEE’S LARGEST BIKER RESORT & CAMPGROUND TAKES A BIG HIT

O

By Indian Rider Bill

n a lazy winding road that skirts the French Broad River between Newport TN and Hot Springs NC, you’ll find an East Tennessee motorcycle Mecca – Bobarosa Saloon. The saloon also known as “Bobs”, is on 25/70 W in Del Rio, TN. It’s been a draw for riders since 2000 when owners Bob & Jessie decided they wanted to create a place where riders could come for music, great food (people come from miles to have their fried bologna sandwich), sit by the river and just enjoy time among fellow riders. The saloon sits on five acres of prime waterfront property and offers RV & tent camping, private room rentals and cozy cabins. In addition to the accommodations, they have events – lots of ’em! Bike nights, fifty-fifty raffles, customer appreciation days, bon fires, bikini bike washes, wing nights, karaoke nights, etc. It’s hard to keep up with them! There’s also a new music pavilion with top headliner bands like Geneva, AC/DC Tribute, Big Gun, Abbey Roads and more, an outdoor bar, a tree of shame/fame and yes, a burn-out pit! It’s not uncommon to have Jessie referee an afternoon of biker games or oil boxing. New to the outside scene last year is a full leather and riding accessory shop, Brotherhood Leathers. Sheila and Josh have the shop full of vests, jackets, Bad Ass Helmets, bling, boots and anything you need to enjoy the fine East Tennessee riding. The inside is as busy as the outside, with the walls and ceilings are plastered with bike and NASCAR memorabilia, an extensive souvenir shop, patch sewing services, a pool room

12

with weekly tournaments and plenty of lounge and bar seating. Don’t forget to sign the wall, bar, table, column, ceiling or whatever you can, to leave your mark! Unfortunately, Bobarosa suffered a terrible blow at the end of December as the French Broad River swelled, overcame the shoreline barricades and flooded the entire property causing significant damage. There was over a foot of water in the pool room/lounge area, most of the picnic tables, fire pit decking, ice machines, campground decks and structures were swept away. Scores of friends and volunteers showed up to help with the cleanup effort, but the recovery process will take time and money. Bob, Jessie and the Bobarosa Family are so very grateful that the no one was hurt and that the flood came during the day, it could have been so much worse. They promise to work hard to not only rebuild Boborosa Saloon back to its original state prior to the flood, but to make it even better for everyone who wish to continue to enjoy their beautiful home on the river and they thank you in advance for any and all donations as flood insurance was completely unavailable to them. The local riding community is coordinating three fundraising rides, one on March 23 (rain date March 30) the other two are TBD. There’s also an official GoFundme site where you can make a donation that will go directly to the flood relief fund. Please visit www.thunderroadstennessee.com, Bobarosa Saloon Facebook page and Indian Rider Bill on Instagram for updated info on the recovery effort and fundraiser rides. We will also post the ride departure points and ride points of contact in next month’s issue. Stay tuned!

THE FAMILY THAT RACES TOGETHER

G

By Scott High rassroots racing is very much a family affair, most of the racers rely on support from family either at home, travelling to the races with them, or both. One of the best things about these races is you can usually walk through the pits and meet the racers, most of them are happy to show you their bikes and talk to you about the sport. The racers in the pits become as close as family to each other too, always there to lend a hand, help a friend/ competitor work on their bike, loan parts or tools to each other, and sometimes even loan a bike. It’s a great family atmosphere in the stands and in the pits, some families even race together, like Boogered Up Racing’s Josh McDonald, his wife Alex, and their kids Mason, Truman, and InaMai. Josh got his first motorcycle when he moved up from a BMX bike to a dirt bike so he could ride with his friends. Later, so he could keep up with everyone when they started riding on the road, he bought a sportster. Like most of us he upgraded and hot-rodded it, did burnouts and wheelies on it, he generally beat the crap out of it and had a blast on it. His wife Alex comes from a motorcycle family and has had motorcycles since she was about 5 so she has been on and around motorcycles her whole life. Her grandfather, uncles,

16

and father are all motorcycle guys, most of you know the name Bumpus, so naturally riding and motorcycles are a big part of their family life. A few years ago when the first flat track races in Shelbyville were announced, Bumpus Harley-Davidson of Murfreesboro and Tom Bumpus supported the event and Tom wanted to race, so Josh decided he wanted to build a Hooligan bike to race too. He still had that old sporty so with just a couple of modifications it was Hooligan race ready. Hooligan bikes are 750cc or larger with a stock frame and no front brake, and a lot of the bikes in the class are sportsters. His first race must have been fun because he was hooked, and his excitement must have been contagious because soon Alex wanted to get in on the fun too and she has her own Hooligan bike. They added a 125cc dirt bike to their stable to race in the Mad Dog Class. Mad Dog bikes are usually 156cc or smaller with no knobby tires (sometimes front knobby are allowed) and no front brake. They even built a little flat track in their back yard to practice on and soon Mason the oldest wanted to race as well. Alex’s father Tom Bumpus regularly races both Mad Dog and Hooligan also. When you go to local races you may notice the same names in a lot of classes, sometimes the racers have a couple of bikes, but most racers try to race in every class

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

their bike or bikes meet the rules and allow them to. The whole family races locally, but Josh also raced at Harley-Davidson’s 115 anniversary celebration in Milwaukee both indoors and on the sand track, and has done an exhibition Hooligan Hillclimb. This year he’s going back to Milwaukee for a Flat out Friday race and will compete to be in the X-Games. All that racing and travelling isn’t easy or cheap and they pay for it themselves, going to races when they’re not working their regular jobs at Bumpus Harley-Davidson, so they are always looking for sponsors to represent, gear, parts, brands, or companies. The whole Boogered up racing family will be racing in Shelbyville in March and September and at the races in Maryville later in the summer. Josh, Alex, and Mason will be racing bikes with motors, and sometimes Truman races his Strider bike, it’s a foot powered coasting bike with no pedals that is great for teaching balance, and InaMai is the family cheerleader. Josh and Alex are active on social media, you can follow them on Instagram @braapmacky and @abumpmcd.

DODGING THE ROADKILL

A LETTER FROM MY MOTORCYCLE

J

ust flipping through the mail the other day, and lo and behold, a letter from “Black Beauty.” Hmmmm, let’s see what’s on her mind. “Hey there! Black Beauty here! Thought I would drop you a line and discuss 2019 (from where I see it of course). I would have sent you an email, but I don’t have a computer. I know you’re excited about the upcoming travel season so I thought I would share some observations with you since we’ll be spending a lot of time together (as always). First of all, I want you to know I’m grateful for the home you’ve given me. I’ve got all the best cleaning supplies, oils and fluids and a comfortable place to be when the winter weather blows in. A lot of my relatives are stuck outside under a tarp and it can get pretty “dicey” out there. You’ve come a long way since you started riding three years ago. I’ve noticed that your skills have improved greatly and And DEER! I HATE DEER! since I love a smooth ride, I appreciate how sleek and cool you Just keep me serviced and make sure I have a nice pair of keep us on the road. You were a little “rough” around the edges “shoes” and we’ll be just fine. in the beginning. Let’s do this!” Although that little incident in September (the accident) took Signed, me by surprise, it looks like we both made it through it with not Black Beauty too much damage. I couldn’t have said it better myself. With that said, I want to encourage you to keep your ego out of your throttle. I’ve noticed that you tend to get a little carried away from time to time, and I just want you to stay within your comfort level. We were both pretty embarrassed about that little “incident” AND a little banged up, but we’ll just live and learn. Okie dokie? While I do love the mountains and all of those little “twisties and thingys” (whatever), I DO love a nice wide open four lane or two lane back country road. Like you, I love the sweet smell of the countryside and passing those “tractor” things and just getting into the countryside where things are simpler. Not the hustle and bustle of the interstate. So, do that for me, K? I’ve heard you’re planning a trip to Sturgis this year. I’ve heard a lot of good things about that part of the country. I’ve also heard that you can get in some trouble out there, you know, the bars, the women, the late nights? I’m ok with it though because like you, you’re traveling with some other “old” farts, and I respect the fact that you’re usually tucked away for the night by 8pm. I can’t wait to ride the Black Hills, Needles Highway and all the glorious roads we plan to ride. I hope you’ll take plenty of pictures. Social media loves bikers and their motorcycles, and I DO love to show off! I want to see Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and California. Think you can make that happen? My buddies tell me the Pacific Coast Highway is “Da Bomb!” Finally, I’ll take care of you if you take care of me. I’ll “giddyup” when you need it and I’ll come to a halt when something gets in the way. Just keep your damned eyes peeled for those pesky “distracted” drivers.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

THE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON BIKERS It’s been two and a half years since the referendum that started Britain on its journey out of the European Union, and now time is running out and “Brexit” is due to take place on March 29, 2019 – deal or no deal. With Parliament squabbling, the prospect of a no-deal Brexit is now looking increasingly likely, and that outcome would affect many things including motorcycles. You may have heard about the United Kingdom reverting to ‘WTO’ rules when it comes to trade, and British biker website www.visordown explains what that will mean: “The World Trade Organization (WTO) maintains an immense database that records types of products and the import duties that countries or trading blocs impose on them. At the moment we’re part of the EU, which means we can trade with other European countries without incurring any tariffs, but once we leave we’ll be outsiders, subject to the taxes they impose.” On motorcycles under 250cc, the EU charges an 8% tariff, and on bikes over that size there’s a 6% duty. Meanwhile, motorcycle parts and accessories are taxed at 3.7% and bike tires are subject to a 4.5% import duty. For consumers, if you’re buying a bike made in the EU -- such as a BMW -- there will be an extra 6% tax to be incorporated into its cost. Even a UK-based manufacturer, like Triumph, would be subject to an import duty on motorcycle parts from EU suppliers, like their Brembo brakes, so even British-made bikes are likely to become more expensive in a no-deal scenario. Exports might be less of an immediate concern to the everyday bike buyer, but they have an impact on the motorcycle industry in Britain, and without a deal in place exported bikes would be taxed by the EU at WTO rates. Of course, once out of the EU the UK government will need to negotiate their own trade deals not only with Europe, but with other trading partners such as Japan, the U.S. and China, but the bottom line is that there’s little prospect that a no-deal Brexit will make bikes or bike-related parts any cheaper. In the meantime, the uncertainty of Britain’s economic future has negatively impacted motorbike sales in the UK, plummeting 17.9% in December following an overall 2.9% gain in 2018. FEDERAL JURY DECIDES MONGOLS MUST FORFEIT LOGO In a first-of-its-kind verdict with far-reaching legal implications, a federal jury ruled that the Mongols motorcycle club must forfeit the logo worn by its members, finding in favor of prosecutors’ novel claim that there is a direct link between the club’s crimes and its trademarked insignia. Last month, the jury in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Calif., found the Mongol Nation guilty of racketeering and conspiracy, classifying the group as a criminal organization, and their verdict on Friday, January 11, 2109 was the second phase of a trial that focused on forfeiture of assets in a decade-long quest by the government to dismantle the club. 22

The verdict will lead to the forfeiture of the group's legal interest in the word "Mongols" and some of their patches, as well as Mongols items seized during the investigation, prosecutors said. If upheld, this will give the right to any law enforcement officer who spots a club member wearing the logo to stop him and confiscate the branded item. The trial next moves to a third phase, in which U.S. District Judge David O. Carter will decide how the forfeiture is carried out. He declined to immediately order the logos forfeited and set a hearing next month to address possible First Amendment issues raised by the verdict, agreeing to solicit briefs from a variety of experts, including trademark attorneys, law school professors, civil rights organizations and think tanks. The judge’s decision highlights the new legal ground being broken in the unprecedented case, which has attracted national attention and is virtually guaranteed to go before the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and perhaps the U.S. Supreme Court. CALIFORNIA TO BEGIN ENFORCING MODIFIED EXHAUST PENALTIES As of January 1, 2019, a modified exhaust on an automobile or motorcycle in California, excessively loud, can no longer be cited as a correctable violation. Previously, if you were cited you had time to get it fixed in order to avoid paying the fine, but Assembly Bill AB1824 carves out an exception for exhaust noise by removing the opportunity to correct the violation and requires a citation to result in a fine only. AB 1824, which was sponsored by the Assembly Committee on Budget and signed into law by then-Governor Jerry Brown in June of 2018, does not change existing laws pertaining to exhaust noise or sale and installation of aftermarket exhaust systems, but rather amends how excess exhaust noise violations are handled by law enforcement. Beginning this year, a vehicle cited for violating the current exhaust noise law will no longer receive what is commonly known as a “fix-it” ticket. Instead, violations will result in an immediate mandatory monetary fine. The fine for a California traffic ticket for “a loud exhaust system” is up to $1,000 dollars. HELMET-FREE SCOOTERS Assembly Bill 2989, the e-scooter bill sponsored by California Assemblyman Heath Flora (R-Ripon), removes the requirement for riders of motorized (electric) standup scooters in the Golden State to wear a bicycle helmet, provided they are 18 or older. The new traffic law also prohibits riding a motorized e-scooter on highways with a speed limit greater than 25 mph, or roads with a speed limit greater than 35 mph, unless it is within a marked bikeway. Meanwhile, Assembly Bill 3077, sponsored by thenAssemblywoman Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) provides law enforcement the ability to issue a “fix-it ticket” to anyone under 18 who doesn’t wear a helmet while on a bicycle, skateboard or skates. The newly enacted violation is correctable if the minor completes a bicycle safety course and gets a helmet that meets safety standards within 120 days of the ticket being issued.

SCIENCE PROVES THAT RIDING A MOTORCYCLE IS GOOD FOR YOU Motorcyclists have always said there’s no better prescription for stress than riding a bike, and now a study from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, at the University of California, Los Angeles, seems to confirm that. The recent study, funded by Harley-Davidson Inc., demonstrated potential mental and physical benefits of riding, including decreased levels of cortisol, a hormonal marker of stress. Three UCLA researchers studied more than 50 motorcycle riders in tests that recorded their brain activity and hormone levels before, during and after riding a bike, driving a car and resting. The bike ride resulted in a 28% decrease in biomarkers of stress, according to the researchers. On average, riding a motorcycle for 20 minutes increased participants' heart rates by 11% and adrenaline levels by 27%, similar to light exercise, as well as their focus and alertness. Harley-Davidson says the study's findings validate what it’s known for more than a century: that riding is good for your mental health. This means the next time you are sitting at your computer feeling sluggish or that you get home after a long a stressful day, the answer to getting back on track or relieving some of the tension could be to simply go out for a ride…doctor’s orders! DO SELF-DRIVING CARS ‘SEE’ MOTORCYCLES? Lane-splitting is an accepted maneuver by motorcyclists all over the world, but in America it is only practiced by riders in the Golden State. California-based Tesla, whose cars are well represented on California highways, seems to be aware of motorcyclists’ unique filtering capabilities there and has been working to ensure their Autopilot systems detect the presence of a lane-sharing rider in traffic. However, YouTuber Scott Kubo recently posted a video to test the functionality of motorcycle detection while lane-splitting, and apparently detecting an approaching motorcycle seems to be hit and miss in Version 9 of Tesla’s neural net Autopilot software. It’s clear from the clip that the system confuses February 2019

motorcycles with cars at times, and can even miss a motorcycle entirely if the motorcycle is moving at a good clip. It’s tough to determine how useful this detection would be in its current state in real-world application. In the YouTube clip Kubo explains that the current 360° camera system (2.0 and 2.5) can process 200 frames per second (or 200fps) spread across the eight cameras positioned around his Tesla car. So, each camera has an equivalent frame rate of 25fps -- a decent digital SLR camera can have over 100fps and an iPhone can shoot at up to 240fps. It might be that the current system just doesn’t have a high enough frame to capture fast moving motorcycles. Self-driving cars are still a burgeoning field of technology with some bugs to work out, and Tesla warns that Autopilot should not be used without some sort of human interaction, but would you want to be rolling up behind a robotic car knowing that an inattentive driver may not be quick enough to take over the manual controls if they “didn’t see the motorcycle”? DRIVERLESS CAR KILLS ROBOTIC PEDESTRIAN In what some are labeling “Robot-on-Robot” crime, an autonomous self-driving Tesla car struck and “killed” a robot roaming down the middle of the roadway in a hit-and-run accident during the recent consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. Many mainstream news agencies worldwide reported the incident as legitimately newsworthy, though it is generally believed to be an over-the-top PR stunt staged by Russian robotics company Promobot ahead of the CES. Stay tuned to NCOM Biker Newbytes for “real news”, nothing FAKE, as we have provided bikers with reliable, timely, relevant motorcycle news for over a quarter century! “BIG DADDY” DON GARLITS’ DRAG RACING MUSEUM

T

ired of the same old routes to Daytona, the Keys, and Disneyworld? Get out of the rut in Ocala FL and see some of the wickedest dragsters and coolest antique autos around at “Big Daddy’s”. The museum is located off of I-75 at exit 341 and is open 9-5 every day except Christmas. Don Garlits is one of the top drag racers of all time and his innovations to the Swamp Rat series of dragsters are on display in his drag racing Museum. He is in every drag racing hall of fame imaginable and was #1 on the NHRA Top 50 drivers 1951-2000. In addition, many of the other top names in racing are also represented. Included in the two museums are approximately 300 of the most interesting cars around. Be sure to allow at least 2-3 hours for your tour. We spent 2-1/2 hours and need to go back. In total, Garlits numbered 34 (plus some A, B, and C models) Swamp Rats--hand crafted, black race cars, which won 144 national event wins. His SR 30 is in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. On display is the final Swamp Rat (SR 34), which ran 323 mph in 4.76 seconds. His Swamp Rat 33 wasn’t a dragster, but a streamliner built for Bonneville, where it ran a record setting 217.947, in 1988, running a blown Ford flat head engine. Among those on display, is his SR14, an early rear engine car, built after he almost lost a foot when his front engine car’s engine exploded. He also displays his 2,200hp jet helicopter powered SR 28. He was never able to get but

24

1,400hp from the car and the times weren’t good. Besides it was too quiet to suit the fans. The restored Swamp Rat 1, built in 1956, sits just as you enter the front door. Cars driven by other famous drag racers include: Connie Kalitta’s “Bounty Hunter”, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme’s “Wedge”, Shirley Muldowny’s “1980 Attebury Car”, Tom “Mongoose” McEwen’s Corvette, and many others. The displays include several drag bikes including: a 1970 Triumph 750, which turned 100.77 in 1/8 mile, Bob O’Brochta’s “Terminal Van Lines Drag Bike”, which ran 208 in the 1/4 mile, as well as several Harleys. The Antique Room is crammed with hot rods, and rare restored cars, which include Ike Eisenhower’s 1956 Chrysler, given him by his wife Mamie, a cool 1947 wood-sided Studebaker dump truck, and a 1913 Metz “Do-it-yourself” car. In addition, there is an Engine Room, where many of the race engines are on display; several are cut-a-ways, showing their interworkings. All of the rooms in this museum are literally packed with displays. If you wanted to inspect each vehicle in detail and read all of the history, you could spend hours. For those of us who love vehicles, this is as good as it gets. “Big Daddy” lives on the property, so you may get a glimpse of him. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: As I write this the government shutdown is ongoing. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ) nearly 95 percent of confirmed aliens in our federal prisons are here illegally. A total of 58,766 known or suspected aliens were in in DOJ custody at the end of FY 2017, including 39,455 persons in Bureau of Prisons custody and 19,311 in United States Marshal Service custody. Of this total, 37,557 people had been confirmed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be aliens (i.e., noncitizens and non-nationals), while 21,209 foreign-born people were still under investigation by ICE to determine alienage and/or removability. The media wants to focus on Central Americans attempting to enter the United States illegally but there are a significant number from Afghanistan, Algeria, China, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Palestine, Zimbabwe and other countries in the mix. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s mission statement is: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values. Lawful immigration means that someone wanting to come into the United States of America who isn’t already a citizen of the United States needs to make an application to become a citizen and/or get permission to reside and work here for a period of time. Legal immigrants are screened to insure they are not a criminal, aren’t bringing in diseases that can spread to citizens of the United States and also understand if the applicant is willing to integrate into our society and not attempt to subvert our nation or the constitution. Illegal immigrants are not screened or documented. They can be criminals, terrorists, subversives, diseased, insane etc. We are a nation of immigrants but not a nation of illegal immigrants. Twenty years ago when an illegal immigrant

committed a crime the news reported that the crime was committed by an illegal immigrant. Not now. The media doesn’t tell you if the criminal was an illegal immigrant. It wasn’t that long ago that you had to be a legal immigrant or citizen to receive benefits paid for with American citizen tax dollars. Not now. It is still illegal for an illegal immigrant to vote in any election in the United States but illegal immigrants are encouraged and allowed to vote in many places. Do illegal immigrants protect Americans? Do they help secure the homeland? Do they honor our values? Could it be the political party of Communists, Socialists and Sharia that is pushing open borders and illegal immigration? Why is there a government shutdown? Because we have unsecured borders that are allowing criminals, disease carriers, illegal voters, anti-United States subversives, freeloaders and enemies of the United States Constitution into our country. What’s worse is that certain un-American citizens are facilitating illegal immigration and helping illegal immigrants take our money in the form of benefits and give them sanctuary from the enforcement of American laws. Yes, there are American citizens who promote and support illegal immigration. They were brainwashed by leftist public school propaganda. Our founding fathers gave up their families, fortunes and lives to create a prosperous nation with opportunity and freedom for us. I’m sorry some government workers are dealing with delayed paychecks but securing our nation’s borders, bringing a stop to illegal immigration, illegal drugs, crime, disease and social decay is the real national priority. The cost of illegal immigration in lives, money and destruction of the American ethic must stop. Our President is doing the right thing. Someone has to bring our nation back into compliance with the constitution. We won’t survive open borders and leftist pansy politics. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Southern Cops Have A Way With Words…. These are actual comments made by South Carolina Troopers that were taken off their car videos:(read w/ a slow, southern drawl) 1. “You know, stop lights don’t come any redder than the one you just went through.” 2. “Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they’re new. They’ll stretch after you wear them a while.” 3. “If you take your hands off the car, I’ll make your birth certificate a worthless document.” 4. “If you run, you’ll only go to jail tired.” 5. “Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that’s the speed of the bullet that’ll be chasing you.” 6. “You had no idea how fast you were going? I guess that means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?” 7. “Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I’m warning you not to do that again or I’ll give you another ticket.” 8. “The answer to this question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?” 9. “Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you pay to go on scary rides, eat cotton candy & corn dogs and step in monkey poop.” 10. “Just how big were those ‘two beers’ you say you had?” 11. “No sir, we don’t have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we’re allowed to write a”s many tickets as we can.” 12. “I’m glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend of yours so you actually know someone who can post your bail.” And The Winner Is…. 13. “You thought we didn’t give pretty women tickets? You’re right, we don’t. Sign here.” -------------------------------------------------------------I decided to make sure my wife woke up with a big smile on her face this morning. Long story short, I’m not allowed to have Sharpies in the house anymore. -------------------------------------------------------------Way back in the woods, a redneck’s wife went into labor in the middle of the night and the local Midwife was called out to perform delivery. Since there was no electricity, the Midwife handed the soon to be father a lantern and she said “Here, hold this high so I can see what I’m trying to do”. Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world. (cont’d.) 26

“Whoa, hold up there Daddy, don’t be in such a dang rush to put that lantern down.....I think I see another one ready to come out.” Sure enough, within minutes the father a new baby girl. The Midwife shouted out, “Oh lawdy, do not put that lantern down.....seems there’s yet another one in there!” The daddy scratched his head, obviously bewildered, and asked the Midwife, “Wow Doc, do you think it might be the light that’s attractin’ em?” --------------------------------------------------------------His actual legal name was Bubba and he was from Tennessee. He needed a loan so he walked into a bank in New York City. He told the Loan Officer he was going to Paris for an annual “Good Ole’ Boy Festival” for 2 weeks and needed to borrow $5,000. but that he was not a customer of the bank. The Loan Officer told him that the bank would require security for the loan so Bubba handed over the keys to a new Ferrari 488 Spider, fully loaded, parked out front of the bank. Bubba also handed over a folder with the cars registration and clear title. The loan officer was very apologetic about having to charge 12% interest since he wasn’t an actual account holder. Bubba nodded and the loan officer crisply stated “the bank must do what we must do”. After Bubba left the loan officer was bragging to all the rest of the bank’s staff and the bank President about the transaction and they were all laughing like crazy how an authentic ‘Bubba from the South’ had put up a beast of a machine with a base price of over $300k for a mere $5k loan. The bank President authorized the Ferrari to be taken to the bank’s private underground garage facility. Two weeks later Bubba walks up to the loan officer’s desk, throws down 5 crisp thousand dollar bills and the $23.07 in interest. The loan officer looked up and stated “Sir, we Googled you and discovered you’re actually a multi-millionaire with business interests all over the world. What puzzled all of us is why you would even bother to borrow a mere five thousand dollars?”. Bubba looked him square in the eye and replied, “Where else in New York City can I park my Ferrari for only $23.07 and know for sure it will be there when I return?”. The loan officer just stood there was his mouth hanging open and Bubba threw a comment over his shoulder as he was leaving, “A good ole’ boy gotta’ do what he gotta do”. Note * Just becuase they talk really slow and with a certain twang, does not by any means indicate they are stupid. --------------------------------------------------------------I asked the sales clerk where the “Self-Help” section was at my local book store and she said if she told me it would defeat my entire purpose.

SUPER E-Z.... JUST FOR 2 SPAGHETTI CARBONARA 3 Large Pats of Real Butter over medium heat 1 Clove Garlic; minced (can buy pre-done in cooled vegetable section of produce) 1/2 Chopped Sweet Onion 12 Thick Slices of Bacon (original recipe calls for Italian bacon which is Prosciutto) which is double the price 1 Package Linguine pasta (original recipe calls for Spaghetti pasta. I prefer wideness of Linguine pasta, your choice though) 2 X-Large Eggs 2 Cups Grated Parmesan Cheese (pre-grated in either Deli section or Cheese section) In a frying pan, combine 1/2 inch of olive oil, minced garlic, chopped onion and bacon, cut into medium squares; cut across several stacked pieces, then cut in half. Let saute’ & simmer for about a half-hour, being careful not to let the oil get to a boiling point. Just keep it moving until bacon is well browned. In a bowl, beat 2 x-large eggs, adding salt and pepper to taste. Bring a pan of salted water to a boil. Cook package of pasta preference, drain and immediately add egg mixture to pasta. The eggs are actually cooked by the pasta (make sure the eggs are thoroughly cooked before proceeding). Stir the egg mixture until it is well mixed. Pour in the saute’ mixture from the frying pan and stir. Finish with the Parmesan cheese and serve all combined. Once you get this recipe down you’ll make it often. Just double all ingredients to serve 4. SO Delicious! Prepare ALL these recipes together w/ your partner. Cooking together is so romantic, especially when paired w/ y’all’s fave music & slow dancing.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, BIKERS.

SWEET & SIMPLE..... STRAWBERRIES OVER POUND CAKE 1 Sara Lee Frozen Pound Cake; Thawed 1 Pint of Fresh Strawberries; slice thin, put in a glass bowl, sprinkle w/ sugar thoroughly, cover & put in fridge for at least 6 hours so that a syrup develops. 1 Stick of Real Butter; softened 1 Can of Extra Creamy Whipped Cream Slice off 2 thick pieces of cake.
