HEN YOU’RE HOT, You’re HOT! Summer is heating up and riding your motorcycle in the open air may sound like a good way to beat the summer heat, but it’s important to take safety precautions before you hit the road. Although you may be inclined to let your skin breathe on a hot day, you’ll likely feel cooler if you keep on at least one layer. That’s because the material helps you retain moisture, making you less likely to dehydrate. And, wearing full-length pants and a jacket, along with gloves, may offer some protection in the event of an accident, as well as help protect your skin from sunburn. Choosing protective apparel that has large mesh panels will help air flow through the material. Try to avoid riding during the hottest hours of the day. Instead, consider riding during the morning, when it’s typically cooler outside, then take the afternoon off to enjoy lunch and other activities before getting back on the road around 5 p.m. And, if riding for extended periods, it’s a good idea to take frequent water breaks. While on the road, a wet bandana tied around your neck or an evaporative cooling neck wrap may help keep you cooler while also blocking the sun from your neck. If you still find yourself too hot, let common sense prevail. Park your bike, remove your helmet and cool down by seeking air conditioning, drinking cold water or going for a swim. We have been busy as Grand Central Station this last month with so many events to attend, but we had a blast at all of them! The Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride was incredible, even though there was a threat of rain that day, almost 3,000 bikes showed up to honor all of our Fallen military and to bring awareness of what Memorial Day is all about. If you have the chance to attend this event next year, it’s a site to see! They have already started getting the ball rolling for next year, so stay tuned to their website and Facebook page for details. The Great Smoky Mountains HOG Rally was a huge success and we had a blast even though it was blazin’ hot, we survived and maybe lost a couple of pounds. It was so much fun, we met so many amazing people and made some new friends too. We are proud the magazine played a part in making each of these events successful and you can read all about these events in this issue. We attended so many other great events, too many to list, but just know we always love to come cover our advertisers’ events if our schedule allows us to. You can definitely tell that summer is in full swing by looking at the Events page and we hope to see you at some of them. We’ll be rolling into East TN on the river for Bobarosa Saloon’s Bike Night on July 28th with Live Music, Vendors, Burnout Contest, Drink & Food Specials, Giveaways and Much More. We hope you will join us for a fun filled night and be sure to come by our trailer and get your Free Rolling Bike Night Card. You’ll need to get your card punched at each Bike Night that you attend to get your name in the drawing for the Grand Prizes. As always, please support to our amazing advertisers that support us by shopping at their businesses when you’re in need of a product or service they provide. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, be safe and enjoy your freedom! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

• Pick up your Rolling Bike Night Card at the 1st Bike Night you attend • Come to as many Rolling Bike Nights as you can and get your card punched • You could Win a Trip to Myrtle Beach Bike Week! • See ad in this issue for details July 2018

“LAY ASIDE YOUR GARMENTS” Today we live in a “selfish society” and the modern day church is no exception. Everybody wants to be healed, delivered, prosper, sing, shout and fallout. All these things are available in the Word of God, but if you don’t work the Word, then the Word won’t work for you. We blame and get mad at God, the Church, and the Pastor. In John 13:1-14 we read where Jesus, the Holy Son of God, the King of Kings, humbles Himself to lowest form of mankind, not just a servant, but the lowest form of a servant by washing the feet of all His disciples including the one He knew would betray Him. In biblical times everybody wore sandals on their feet and they walked everywhere they went. When they came to someone’s house, there was always a servant to wash their feet as they entered the home. This was a job for the lowest servant who couldn’t do anything else. John 13:1 “…when Jesus knew His hour was come that He should depart out of this world.” Jesus had worked with His disciples for the last three years healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out devils, and now it all comes down to a few hours. Jesus knew that every hour that went by was crucial and every word He would speak must count. Instead of teaching them more miracles, more theology and more doctrine, He chose to teach them the most important thing of all, HOW TO SERVE! Vs.2 “And supper being ended.” It is very important to recognize when “supper being ended.” We get fed the Word of God every time we are in Church, but what do we do with it? I understand why the world thinks Christianity is a bunch of fruit flakes. All of us just want to go to Church, sing, shout, run and fall out, but we do nothing with what we have learned from God. Spiritual food in like the natural food, it is meant to give us fuel to burn, but if all we do is eat, all we are doing is getting spiritually fat and we are no good to anybody. Well, the “supper is being ended,” ITS TIME TO SERVE! Vs.4 “He riseth from supper, and laid His garments aside.” It’s time the Church took off its garment of self-righteousness and went to serving the July 2018

people instead of the people serving the Church. One thing I couldn’t help but notice; “He rises from supper.” This is telling me that all the disciples were eating with dirty feet! They were too good to even wash their own feet! Now I see the importance of the last lesson Jesus would teach His disciples was the most important lesson of all, TO SERVE! Here again, I couldn’t help but notice, that Jesus did all the serving, He didn’t ask for anybody’s help. “He rises from supper, He laid aside His garments, He took a towel, He girded Himself, He got down on the floor, He poured the water, He washed the disciple’s feet, and He wiped their feet.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

RIDER SAFETY

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER

W

HEN I WAS 4, I got my first motorcycle. My dad began explaining to me at that early age that I was accountable for my choices. To ride, I needed my helmet, gloves, boots (or “good shoes” as mom called them), jeans and long sleeves. If I chose to ride without these items and he or mom caught me, I would not be riding the motorcycle. So, since dad was with me or very close by for many years when I road my dirt bike on our farm, I wore the required gear. Because for me, there was NOTHING better than riding my motorcycle, NOTHING. When I was a teenager, I was invincible. Or, at least thought I was. I would jump rocks and over fences, climb steep hills, speed down into gullies and my motorcycle only had one speed - wide open. It was my desire to be faster and braver than any boy on the neighboring farms. My mom may argue here that instead of “braver”, “more stupid” might be the best description. I’m going with “braver”. One warm summer day, I made the choice to ride with moccasins, shorts and a t-shirt. Dad was gone and mom was busy in the house. I decided I wasn’t going far and would never get caught. That was the day that my neighbors (AKA “the boys”) had put the finishing touches on a new jump and was looking for a volunteer to give it a go. Since I was the fastest and bravest of our small tribe of riders, I was excited to try it out. I would like to say I made a stunning jump showing grace and talent with a smooth, uneventful landing. What actually happened resulted in something like 37 stitches starting at the base of my big toe making a line back to my heel and finishing up under the ankle of my left foot - remember, I was wearing moccasins. The shorts did nothing to help either and I had rash covering the majority of my left leg that required a nurse with a steady hand and some tweezers to remove various rocks, briars and pieces of wood. I did wear my helmet and still had it on as I picked-up my bike along with my ego and made my way back home. I left my helmet on as I walked in the kitchen announcing to my mom I thought I might need medical attention. My foot was still bleeding through the packed dirt that covered most of me and mom took one look at me and matter-of-factly stated, “You’re a sight”. If your mom has ever said that to you, then you know it’s not

July 2018

a good comment. Fortunately, my helmet was helping to hide my tears. One might think these were tears of pain. Nope, these were tears of shame. I knew what my dad was going to say. I thought I knew anyway. After he had examined my injuries and I saw the pain in his face, my heart was so sad. My choice to ride without my gear and my resulting crash directly caused the pain my parents were feeling. Dad was good to his word and I didn’t ride again for six weeks. I would like to say that for the next 30 or so years, I was the poster child for safety on a motorcycle. For the most part I was and sometimes I chose to ride fast or daring. But, I always had my gear on. In May’s article, “Knights in Shining Armor” I talked about ATTGATT (All The Gear All The Time) and focused on the importance of the helmet. It’s your choice as a rider to wear all of your gear all the time. Most riders have some idea of the repercussions of his or her choices where a motorcycle is involved. Each of us recognizes that just getting on the motorcycle increases our risk of injuries or worse. And, to decrease that risk we can wear our gear. According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a motorcyclist is about 34 times more likely to die in a crash than a person in a vehicle. So, what else can you do to decrease your risk? • Take a safety class • Don’t ride if you’ve been drinking alcohol • Make yourself visible to others • Practice your skills like swerving and stopping • Check your bike using T-CLOCS (tires and wheels, controls, lights and electrical, oil and fluids, chassis and side stand) Before heading out for a ride, assess your risk and make adjustments to decrease your risk if possible. My lesson from when I was young is always with me. You may have a few lessons of your own. Just a reminder, safe riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Bullet Points

ONGOING TRAINING By Scott High

If you own a firearm, you owe it to yourself and the ones you love to practice, and practice a lot. But eventually punching holes in paper targets can get stale, boring, and expensive. If that’s happened to you, there are some things you can do to make it fun again. First you can take classes, there are many classes offered all over the state that not only make you a better shooter, but they are also fun. If you have an HCP, you have had the basic class required by the state, so where do you go from there? Defensive pistol classes are a good start if you carry or even if you own a handgun. Most firearm instructors break these classes into different levels. Level 1 usually starts by going over gun safety, and covers basic marksmanship and gun handling making you both more proficient, and more comfortable shooting and handling your firearm. You will learn to how to shoot faster and more accurately, reload faster, and better understand when to reload, shoot one handed and with your weak hand only. Defensive pistol stage 2 will usually bring in more real world scenarios like recognizing and engaging multiple threats, shooting from barricades or from behind cover, turning and shooting on the move, or from awkward positions and injured. Stage 3 will sometimes bring in the element of stress, loud noises, distracting lights and people yelling or beating on things while you engage targets from different distances and positions. The same type classes are also offered for rifles and shotguns, how many times have you ever fired your weapon from your weak hand or shoulder? Usually classes like this are offered where you took your handgun carry class or at shops with ranges such as Tennessee Gun Country. It would probably be a good idea for all of us to take classes often, but you may also want to try competition. There are lots of different types of competitions from straight marksmanship competitions, to tactical, and practical competitions. There are many different organizations in each category with slightly different styles and rules. Some practical shooting competitions can be

July 2018

done with carry guns and holsters and most will mimic real world situations and are designed to both make you a better shooter and help you better handle a situation where you may have to protect yourself or your loved ones. Some tactical competitions are similar but may use highly modified or “race guns” as they tend to place more emphasis on speed and accuracy. The best route is to check them all out, go watch a few matches and maybe even try a few to see which ones suits you and your equipment. Tactical 3 gun competitions are becoming very popular, in 3 gun, one shooter uses a handgun, a rifle, and a shotgun at different times and often they use all 3 on the same stage. There are cowboy shooting competitions using single action revolvers, and some even dress in period costumes. There are cowboy contests from horseback and others are like 3 gun but use single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and double barrel or early pump action shotguns. There are also long range and sniper type competitions, these use highly specialized rifles and go out to extreme ranges some well beyond 1000 yards. Long range shooting requires hours and hours of very expensive practice but to me looks incredibly fun, but some of the rifles are easily over $5,000, with optics that are almost as much, and depending on the caliber you shoot, ammunition can be close to or in some cases over $5 per round. Reloading classes are also a good idea for some. Reloading your own ammunition can make shooting a lot less expensive if you shoot enough, the equipment can be a little expensive but in the long run will easily save more than the startup cost. Reloading can be as easy or as difficult as you make it. You can buy basic equipment and reload 1 at a time using known loads, or get elaborate semi-automated reloading equipment capable of loading multiple calibers at a very high rate. Because reloading can be dangerous, taking classes is a good starting point. It can be relaxing too. There are lots of things you can do to spice up your training, but the main point is to always train. When you stop training you are going backwards.

INDY 500

C

ONTRASTED WITH other auto races, the “bucket list” Indy 500 is a 12 day event, ending on the Sunday before Memorial Day--a celebration of the open wheel race car. There are concerts, a parade, an Indy Lights Race, practice, qualifying, the famous Carb Day, antique racer display, must see IMS museum and track parade, all capped off by the Indy 500 itself. The dedication to the military and veterans is always present with all branches represented in track ride-ons during the opening ceremony, a swearing in ceremony and a flyover by a B-2 Stealth Bomber. Thankfully for us, there is a two day rest in the middle, when we were able to enjoy the River Walk and Canal Walk in downtown Indy. Our favorite local restaurants are Working Man’s Friend (lunch only), Mugs and Buns (best root beer), and Steer Inn (try the local favorite (pork tenderloin). Another must do is a tour of Dallara, on Main Street in Speedway, IN, where all of the rolling chassis for the IndyCars are built. Although we have good seats, we ignored them and spent our time where the action is, Turn 2. Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) embraces motorcycles, with free parking. Practice and qualifying are times to see the drivers averaging speeds of 230 mph. During practice James Davison demolished his car, but the crews had it ready for qualifying the next day. Pippa Mann, a perennial female contestant, as well as one of the favorites, James Hinchcliffe, who missed the qualifying window, were among those who failed to make the 33 qualifiers. After qualifying, the top 9 qualifiers compete in the Race For the Pole. Ed Carpenter, as pole winner, picked up a check for $100,000 and a trophy. The Indy Lights drivers are competing to be picked up as an IndyCar driver. These guys can get a little scary as they average 190 mph in their

July 2018

Mazda powered race cars. Colton Herta picked up the win for Andretti Steinbrenner Racing, with a top average speed of 194 mph. The annual Champion of the series will receive a $1,000,000 scholarship toward the IndyCar series and is guaranteed 3 races in the IndyCar series, including the Indy 500. Easy to see why these races get a little hairy! The Indy Festival Parade is held downtown on the Saturday before the race. It includes marching bands, floats, balloons, Corvettes carrying all of the drivers in qualifying positions, horses, and the Indianapolis Motorcycle Drill Team. Will Power, of Australia, won the feature race in his #12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, beating out pole sitter, Ed Carpenter’s Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet by 3.1 seconds, after 500 miles and 30 lead changes. Power is the first Australian to win the race and the first to win both the Indy 500 and the IMS Road Course in the same year. For his victory, Power picked up checks for a cool $2.5 Million and got his name on the coveted Borg-Warner Trophy. Dancing with the Stars ladies’ heartthrob and 3 time winner, Helio Castroneves crashed his Pennzoil Chevy on lap 147, as did another ladies’ favorite, Danica Patrick, in her final racing event on lap 68. James Davison crashed his hastily rebuilt Chevy, with last year’s winner, Takuma Sato, on lap 49. Ed Jones, Sebastian Bourdais, and 2013 winner, Tony Kanaan, also left the race in crashes. Ya need to participate in this spectacular event! For info on the events and parking, go to inianapolismotorspeedway.com. 2019 tickets are on sale now. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper and Judy.

DODGING THE ROADKILL

RAIN OR SHINE

By: Hank Bonecutter

W

ith the Memorial Day weekend behind us, I guess we can focus on summer and all that it brings with it. Specifically, good weather. The kind of weather that allows us plenty of “seat” time on our bikes. Up to now, it’s been a crapshoot. Here in my neck of the woods, it seemed as though we went from winter straight to summer, without a hint of spring. If you wanted to enjoy some time on your motorcycle, the best time of the day was in the morning, before the heat wave moved in. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE early morning bike rides. I’ve always been a morning person and it’s no problem for me to saddle up and grab a cup of coffee and hit the road. When I travel, I love to take off about 4am, when it’s cooler, then watch the sun come up on the back of my Harley. Here in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, where I ride most often, we have weather that’s as close to dyslexic as anything could be. Cool mornings, steamy hot afternoons, and the daily routine of “pop up” showers. Some of those showers can be brutal. If I find myself many miles from home, this can be a real problem. When I first started this journey, I avoided the rain like the plague. I would plan my trips around good weather, without much of a chance for rain. I was a sissy about it. I just wasn’t ready to deal with it. Last year, I spent a weekend in the Smokies and on our return trip home, we encountered some serious storms. As we approached the darkening clouds, I kept wondering when my partner was going to pull over so we could put on our rainsuits. I had to pull up beside him and motion to him to pull over so I could at least get mine on. It’s not that I’m intimidated by the rain, (ok, just a little), I just can’t see very well in it. I don’t have a full face helmet, and my glasses fog up real bad and it’s dangerous. I borrowed a pair of glasses from my partner, put on the rain gear, and off we went. It was a glorious experience. I had done it, and it gave me confidence to face the rain and all that comes with it. Lately it’s been a hit or miss on getting my daily wind therapy, because of the crazy weather. I like to think I can get out for a couple of hours and rev up the engine, (both mine and the Harley), and get home without too much trouble. I don’t think

July 2018

any of us plan on a day of riding when the weather sucks, but I’ve finally reached the point in my journey where it doesn’t matter. It’s one thing to be on a trip and encounter bad weather, but I don’t think any of us “voluntarily” get out to get wet, but it happens. Each step of this journey has been a learning experience. Things I’ve learned from my brothers I ride with and things I’ve learned from some of you who follow my blog. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. So I feel as though I’m gaining the type of confidence I need to be a serious biker and not just someone learning his way around the neighborhood. Rain or shine, I ride. I’m better prepared for the bad weather and my skills have improved to the point that I don’t think I would put myself in harm’s way. I love this experience and as I’ve said before, if I could live forever, I would ride forever. Thanks for coming along!

Memorial Ride XVIII May 27th, 2018

here was a threat of rain on the day of the event but it didn’t stop folks from turning out for the 18th Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride. As always, the opening ceremony started with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the National Anthem, song by Kalib Wright, local performer who also sang “American Soldier”. There was also an appearance of a special guest, “Mr. Lincoln” and Spencer from the American Eagle Foundation. I believe the reason this is a favorite part of the opening ceremony is the American Bald Eagle is a powerful and majestic symbol of our great country. Guest speaker Barry Rice did an excellent talk on the subject of P.T.S.D. Suicide. Barry is on the Board of Directors of Hillenglade, a charitable organization that helps with military P.T.S.D. Besides helping us to bring awareness of what Memorial Weekend is about, we’re sure he helped raise attention that P.T.S.D. is real. Tc Barnett, (local performer) sang “Still a Soldier”. Sevierville P.D. Officers Nicole and Layman placed the wreath at the Veteran’s Military Monument while Hugh Warren and Liz Loar played Taps with echo.

The beloved Loretta Lynn performed to a patriotic audience of motorcycle riders at the Military Tribute Day where she put on an incredibly touching and often humorous performance. This year, Loretta’s Ride will benefit the USO, an organization which she has worked with over her entire career. TMMR Sponsor, Jeff Crotty of Lucas Oil and a veteran event promoter shared, “While no one can predict the future success of any event of this nature, we believe the potential is present for

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

HOG RALLY By: Scott High

W

HEN THE Harley-Davidson Motor Company decided to stop holding state HOG rallies in favor of fewer but larger regional rallies, it was only natural for them to hold one in Tennessee. We have a long history of very successful state HOG rallies, one of the first regional HOG rallies was in Cookeville last year and was a huge success. When it was announced that the 2018 Great Smoky Mountains HOG Rally would be held in Maryville TN we knew it would be big. The riding in East Tennessee is world famous, as are the concerts put on at The Shed Smokehouse and Juke Joint at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson. Rally Coordinator Tim Hartley and the entire rally committee put together a great rally. It was nonstop and loaded with things to do. To be honest there was a little rain, but it didn’t seem dampen anyone’s spirits at all. There were lots of organized rides on some the great roads around the area, some were large group rides like the 100 Million Mile Skyway ride on the Cherohala Skyway, some were limited number rides with smaller groups including the ride to Bald River Falls, there were poker runs, and rides to area attractions like the Travel Back In Time Motorcycle History Ride to Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, and the Manhattan Project Ride to the American Museum of Science and Energy at Oak Ridge. One of the crowd favorites at Tennessee HOG Rallies over the years, and now the Regional Rallies, has always been the Motorcycle Skills Competitions. Exhibitions by local Motor Patrols are always fun to watch but the real fun is the HOGs vs PIGs competition. For the past few years the HOGs have held the upper hand, but this year the PIGs were ready and wanted the title back, they got it too! It was a spectacular display of motorcycle riding from both sides and lots of fun to watch. Motor Officers have become a huge part of HOG rallies around here, they escort the rides all over the area. After watching them work to make sure everyone is safe and arrives at the same time, we have to give a special shout out 28

to all the departments and officers involved from Maryville PD, Alcoa PD, Blount County Sheriff, Cookeville PD, Putnam County Sheriff, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The Blount County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Maryville welcomed the HOG rally with a street party at the Downtown Maryville Bash, with food trucks, live music from 70s Classics rockers Vinyl Radio, Motor Officer Exhibitions, and slow races. Concerts at The Shed Smokehouse and Juke Joint at Smoky Mountain H-D featured 4 nights of tribute bands with Allman Brothers tribute

band Mama Louise, Rolling Stones tribute band Satisfaction, CCR/John Fogerty tribute band Green River, and Tom Petty tribute band The Wildflowers. The icing on the cake Saturday afternoon was The Harley Hooligan Flat Track Races at Smoky Mountain Speedway. The ½ mile banked red clay dirt track was fast, so were the bikes and riders. There were several classes and even a little rain delay didn’t slow down the action. At the closing ceremonies they announced that it was one of if not the biggest HOG rallies ever.

ON OR NEAR THE WATER DIP

1 Large Red Pepper; medium chop 1 Can of Sweet Corn; drained 1 Medium Sweet Onion; medium chop 1/2 Cup of Sliced Black Olives 1 Large Jalapeno, medium chopped (remove seeds) 1 Packet of dry Ranch Dressing Mix 2 Large Tubs of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Just chop everything and put in in a really bright but plastic serving bowl, add the Whipped Philly, stir till well combined and serve up with Scoops or any fave chip. I always add several dashes of Sriracha hot sauce (in condiment aisle w/ other hot sauces) and I squeeze half a lime over all when done. This has the best burst of fresh flavor and a perfect dip for poolside or out on the water. So good and makes you thirsty for ice cold refreshment. *see last recipe. Oh, Yeah!

E-Zest LOBSTER TAILS

Preheat oven broiler. Lay your lobster tail flat on counter. Take a pair of kitchen serrated scissors and just cut straight down the front of tail all the way to the back of the fan-tail. Gently pull it open slightly and reach in and loosen lobster tail flesh while being sure not to pull fan-tail flesh loose. Sit the flesh right on top of where you just made the center cut and it now has the perfect position for broiling. Mix garlic powder in melted butter to taste, salt & pepper tails, then squeeze lemon or lime juice all over tails and let soak in and then brush the melted butter w/ garlic powder thoroughly over each tail. Broil no longer than 8 mins. each. Remove from broiler and brush w/ butter sauce again. Serve very hot w/ each person getting a small bowl of real butter; melted and a wedge of lemon or lime. I always do a timed 7 mins. for a medium tail as don’t like chewy at all. There’s literally 100’s of spices you can melt in your butter before brushing on and broiling. Get Creative!

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

NEW ‘A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW’ BROCHURE AVAILABLE FROM NCOM The latest in a line of “BIKER’S GUIDE” brochures was recently unveiled during the Mock Legislative Session at this year’s NCOM Convention in Mobile, Alabama. Conducted by the National Coalition Of Motorcyclists’ Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), the seminar was a hands-on demonstration of passing legislation, providing a perfect opportunity to unveil the new “A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW” educational brochure of similar topic. The new tri-fold brochure was produced by the NCOM-LTF to explain how to get a bill introduced and lobby for pro-motorcycle legislation, and is being provided free of charge to any Motorcycle Rights Organization (MRO), Confederation of Clubs (COC), NCOM Member Group, club or organization, through Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. “The Biker’s Guide was well received,” said Frank Ernst, Chairman of the NCOM-LTF following the mock session on May 12th. “After we passed them out, many attendees came up and asked if they could have additional copies, and most agreed it is a valuable tool and will give people help on how to get started in the process.” A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW joins previous titles in the educational series which includes; RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE, COMMUNICATING WITH GOVERNMENT, and NEWS MEDIA RELATIONS, and for free copies for you and your motorcycle group, call A.I.M./NCOM at (800) ON-A-BIKE (800662-2453). MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES TREND DOWNWARD Nationwide motorcycle traffic fatalities dropped by 5.6% from 2016 to 2017, a new report shows. The Governors Highway Safety Association released a report in May showcasing preliminary data on last year’s motorcycle fatalities by state. Per the report, U.S. motorcycle fatalities dropped by 296 deaths -- from 5,286 in 2016 to a projected 4,990 last year. That’s coming off a 5.1% increase in such road fatalities from 2015 to 2016, the report states. The figures reported are projections based on preliminary data provided for 2017 from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Compared with 2016, motorcyclist fatalities are estimated to have decreased in 30 states, remained the same in two states, and increased in 18 states. E15 ETHANOL PROTECTION PROPOSED IN CONGRESS U.S. Representatives Austin Scott (R-GA) and Lois Frankel (DFL) have introduced the bipartisan “Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act of 2018” to require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand consumer awareness on how to safely use fuel containing more than 10% ethanol. 34

Since motorcycle and ATV engines are prohibited from using fuel with more than 10% ethanol content, namely E15 (fuel containing 15% ethanol), improved labeling, fuel pump safeguards, and education outreach are key to protecting consumers. E15 fuel is sold at many retail gas stations, and currently 63% of consumers assume all products sold at these stations are safe for their engines despite the fact that high ethanol fuel blends can damage smaller engines and void manufacturer warranties. RETALIATORY TARIFFS WOULD ‘SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT’ HARLEY-DAVIDSON With the full support of all 28 member states, the European Union will impose “rebalancing” tariffs on U.S. imports ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to Levi’s jeans beginning in July in retaliation over President Donald Trump’s decision to put duties on European aluminum and steel. After failing to win trade concessions, on June 1 the Trump administration withdrew exemptions given to imported metals from the EU, Canada and Mexico from global tariffs imposed in March, citing “national security” interests. Harley-Davidson has warned of a “significant impact” on its sales from reprisal duties, saying in a statement; “We believe a punitive, retaliatory tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles in any of our major markets would have a significant impact on our sales, our dealers, our suppliers and our customers in those markets.” The Milwaukee-based Motor Company claims such tariffs on raw materials would inflate its costs by an additional $15-20 million this year. Likewise, India is countering the Trump tariffs by proposing an increase on import duty on 30 American products, including “specific motorcycles imported from the U.S.”, by up to 100%. MIC, CONGRESSIONAL MOTORCYCLE CAUCUS CONFER ON AUTOMATED TECH The Motorcycle Industry Council, in coordination with the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, hosted a briefing on “Intelligent Transportation Systems and Automated Vehicle Applications Impacts on Motorcycle Safety” on May 22. Caucus co-chairs, U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Michael Burgess (R-TX) addressed the Caucus’s mission to support riders through education and awareness, the potential for technologies to improve the riding experience and bring in new riders, and why the discussion on how motorcycles will factor into a connected and autonomous world is so important. The briefing, moderated by Callie Hoyt, MIC’s manager of federal affairs, featured a panel of industry and research experts: Sam Campbell, BMW Group; Gary Higgins, American Honda Motor Company, Inc.; Shane McLaughlin, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute; and Eric Teoh, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “Visibility on the road can equate to life or death for motorcyclists, and human error is a major factor in that equation. If emerging connected and automated technologies are developed to correctly detect and respond to motorcycles, their deployment holds the potential to considerably decrease

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

July 2018

NEWS BYTES motorcyclist injury and fatality rates,” Hoyt said. Panelists discussed how connected and autonomous applications relate to motorcycles, how the applications can supplement one another, and the overall effect that widespread connected and automated technology can have on motorcycling. Both the House and Senate have been developing legislation that would establish the first federal regulatory framework for autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. The briefing recognized the importance of ensuring that the needs of everyone on the road -- particularly motorcyclists -- are addressed in AV legislative and regulatory landscapes, as well as in real-life applications. Advanced technology will also affect motorcycle rider training programs, and the panel talked about the need to train riders on how to interact with connected and automated vehicles. AUTOMATED VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY SHOWING UP ON MOTORCYCLES TOO It’s not only cars and trucks: automated tech is starting to show up wherever there are wheels, and companies are starting to focus on making motorcycles safer with automateddriving technology. Exposed to the elements and operating on two wheels instead of four, motorcyclists are particularly defenseless in the event of a crash. Yet there’s been little innovation in the motorcycle safety industry until recently. Earlier this year, major auto parts supplier Bosch announced it was working on driver-assistance systems for motorcycles, like adaptive cruise control, which accelerates and decelerates to avoid potential collisions. Before that, a Canadian startup called Damon X Labs also launched with the intention of creating a similar system for motorcycles. Now, Israel-based startup Ride Vision is also working on rider safety features for motorcycles, creating an alert system that uses relatively inexpensive front- and rearview cameras to give a 360-degree view of the motorcycle’s immediate surroundings. The system uses lights attached to the motorcycle’s rearview mirrors to alert the motorcyclist when there is a chance of collision -- whether there’s a car passing or if the rider is leaning too hard. Skully Technologies, an Atlanta-based wearable tech company, is introducing a DOT certified motorcycle helmet that has augmented July 2018

reality and artificial intelligence features including a heads-up display, rearview camera, Smart Phone and Bluetooth integration, with hands-free control and other smart technology. While some of the self-driving sensors and systems are the same between cars and motorcycles, it’s a notably different product says recode.net; “While the mechanics are different, the automated motorcycle industry will likely move in a similar direction as the autonomous car industry. Startups and suppliers alike will rush to partner with major motorcycle manufacturers to begin testing and then eventually producing vehicles with this technology.” NEW HAMPSHIRE BANS MOTORCYCLE-ONLY ROADSIDE CHECKPOINTS Motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints first appeared in New York in 2009; functioning like sobriety checkpoints, motorcycleonly checkpoints (MOC) allow law enforcement to pull over motorcyclists without cause, for an on-the-spot safety, license, and helmet inspection. Since then, these so-called safety checkpoints have popped up across the country and have spiked controversy as opponents claim invasion of privacy and discrimination against motorcyclists over the operators of other motor vehicles. Nineteen states now bar such roadblocks either through legislation or judicial proceedings (AK CA IL ID IA LA MD MO MI MN NC NH OR RI TX VA WA WI & WY), and in 2015 Congress banned the use of federal funds for MOCs as part of the FAST Act highway bill. Yet they continue to be a problem for bikers in some states. Although in 2011 New Hampshire became the first state to prohibit the use of federal funds to conduct discriminatory motorcycle-only stops by police, the “Live Free Or Die” state recently enacted Senate Bill 516 to prohibit motorcycle-only checkpoints outright. Signed by Governor Chris Sununu on May 30, 2018, effective immediately; “No law enforcement officer or agency shall establish or conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty.” ~Henry David Thoreau (1817-62), American Essayist, Philosopher

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: ast month I wrote about preparing to go to Vietnam in June of 1968. I was asked to continue the story and agreed to do so. As July of 1968 approached I began a pre-deployment leave just before the 4th of July. I went back to my 1956 Chevy Belair with a 265 cubic inch V-8 and three speed transmission. This was the car that got me a book of tickets in ’66 and ’67 and a 20-day county jail sentence. I negotiated joining the Army at 17 with my mom and Judge Earl Jones and he waived the jail. I went to basic training in August of ’67. Judge Jones holds a dear place in my heart for giving me a chance and setting me on the path my life has taken. More wild kids could benefit from a second chance to join the military, contribute to our nation, take on responsibility, learn self-discipline and grow up!! Six months in service might make more patriots out of young wandering liberal kids. Thank you Judge!!! While on leave I spent time hanging with my old buddies, talking cars, drinking a few beers and seeing my family. For all they knew this was the last time they would see me. After all I was headed where 100 to 400 young Americans were dying a week. In the evenings I rotated dates among four girls I was sweet on from high school. Call it pity or charity but I gave my 18-year-old best to get a proper send off as my trip to Vietnam approached. After tearful hugs and goodbyes, it was back to Fort Benning. Everyone came back and stories of home filled the barracks. Finally, we trucked to the C-141 cargo jets and off we went. After a long flight we landed at Bien Hoa airbase at night. Amid distant aerial flares, artillery booms and periodic tracers lazing through the sky we loaded on trucks and went to tents for a few hours of sleep. My 325th Aviation Support Detachment was assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry under the command of General George Patton Jr. at Blackhorse Base Camp about half way between Xuan Loc and Vung Tao. After my first C-7 Caribou flight we were home!! We were put in canvas covered hootches surrounded by sandbags. Blackhorse was about a mile

L

square with a runway made out of heavy gauge interlocking metal panels, armored Cav Troop areas, helicopter parking and a refueling area. The perimeter was a high dirt berm with bunkers and wooden towers with heavy machine guns. Beyond was a large open area with rows of concertina wire, claymore mines, trip flares and then some pretty dense jungle and rubber tree plantations. At random times 175mm howitzers and/or 8” self-propelled artillery would fire support missions and when it wasn’t raining the wind blew clouds of red dust that penetrated everything. Our little aviation detachment took over air traffic control of the airfield. I controlled aircraft from a mobile self-contained ATC box set on top of a 15’ wood pole tower. Our hootches were next to the Air Force Forward Air Controllers, Air Cav helicopter parking area, airfield fire station and the Cav’s Aero Rifle Platoon (ARP). This was where I got bit by the ground pounder bug. I enjoyed the mental exercise of air traffic control but started volunteering to fly door gunner on Cav admin missions and went outside the wire to set trip flares with the ARPs a few times. There was something about being outside the wire that agreed with me and made me feel alive!!! During my year at Blackhorse I filled sandbags, drove trucks to Long Bien a few times for supplies and stood rocket watch at night from our air traffic control tower. We got occasional rocket and mortar attacks and probes by the VC. After a few months we had a major operation just outside the camp against an NVA R&R center. They were resting right under our noses. Things got real hairy really quick. I ended up helping armorers screw warheads on rockets to keep the helicopters armed. We had shot up helicopters sliding down the runway, body bags being unloaded and occasionally the troops would bring in an NVA officer for interrogation. Yep, this is a war…… Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

The woman says, “Doc, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It kinda’ scares me.” The Doc says “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water, take a big gulp and swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the Doc looking fresh and relaxed. “Doc, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my hubby started losing it I just swished and swished my mouthful of water but never swallowed and he just calmed right down. How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says, “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.” --------------------------------------------------------------Please pray for my wife. A bee stung her on the forehead and she is in I.C.U. She almost died. Luckily, I was close enough to her and was able to hit the bee as hard as I could with a shovel at the very second that the bee stung her. --------------------------------------------------------------Leroy slides off his trunks at the beach and places his hat over his privates. A woman walks by and says “if you were a gentleman you’d life your hat.” Leroy says, “if you didn’t look like somebody hit you in the face with a shovel it would lift itself.” --------------------------------------------------------------“Grumpy” is at his girlfriend’s Baby Shower and sees all these women patting and rubbing his gal’s tummy saying “Congratulations!”. He pops another beer and grumbles to himself, “How come nobody is over here rubbing my balls and saying “Good Job!?.”
