ELLO EVERYONE, this month my letter will be short and sweet. We have been in Canada for the last week celebrating our Grandsons 1st Birthday. Today we are heading home so we’ll be at airports or in the air all day. It will be a bitter sweet goodbye and we will miss our precious little guy until the next time we see him in October, but… thank goodness for Skype! Also as I’m typing this, Harley-Davidson is having their dealer show in San Diego and unveiling the 2019 models, colors, and changes. I think Scott may be motorcycle shopping, ugh.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries, Inc. www.covenantconfirmers.org Founder of the Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic.org Pastor Ron’s messages can now be heard and downloaded off of the website: just click on the “Broadcast” tab

“THE GLORY OF GOD” What is your definition of “The Glory of God?” Have you ever seen The Glory of God? How do you know if God shows up at your church or not? Would it be when the choir sings, and you felt the goose bumps? When you were emotional during the altar call? When you ran around the church? When the preacher spoke a word that made you shout? Never measure the Glory of God by human emotions. Gen. 28:16 “And Jacob awaken out of his sleep, and he said, surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.” So many Christians are asleep during Church, some physically and others mentally. Just because you have a denominational name on a building, doesn’t mean that the Lord is there. And what if He was there and you missed Him? Do you come to Church to meet your friends, make new contacts, or play the dating game, if so you may have missed Him? Maybe it’s because you didn’t recognize Him? If you’re wrapped up in human emotions, you’ll recognize the choir, the ushers, and the pastor. When you come to Church, you should come prepared to meet God Himself and receive revelation knowledge that will change your life. In 2 Cor. 12:9 “My Grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” God’s Glory is not revealed in our strength (perfection), but in our weakness (imperfection). I have seen God’s Glory in the deliverance of addiction to alcohol or drugs, families restored. I have seen God’s Glory in the healing of sick bodies. I have seen God’s Glory in the prosperity of believers who messed up their past, but God gave them a future. John 9:1-7 “Jesus passed by a man that was blind from birth. His disciples asked Him, Master, who did sin, this man or his parents? A religious mindset always teaches us to blame someone or something for our troubles. If we took the same time spent blaming others and used that time to find a solution, we would all be better off. Jesus rebuked them with “Neither…but that the works of God maybe made manifest in him.” This blind man never asked for Jesus to heal him, but God can take what the devil meant for your harm and turn it to your good! John 10:10 “The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy: but Jesus has come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” God

September 2018

doesn’t need the tricks of the devil to get you to love Him, but He can turn the devil’s tricks to His Glory if you let Him! John 9:6 “Jesus spit on the ground and made clay. Then He anointed his eyes with the clay, and told him to GO, WASH, in the POOL OF Siloam.” Notice the direction, the instruction and the order it was given, the modern-day Christian thinks he has the right to change the Word of God. When you work the Word, the Word will work for you. The Glory of God is manifested through our adversity Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Lena – 3 Year Old Female. I’m a bubbly girl and what one might call a real people person. I’m excited to meet everyone. I’m a tug-o-war girl but I’m a gentle player and as soon as I’m tired. I enjoy lots of cuddles and lying in the grass. I’m the kind of girl that’s loyal to the end and will never stop loving you, but right now I don’t have a human to call my own. Will you be mine?

Andy – 2 Year Old Male. Andy is an energetic guy that would love to have a yard to run in and a family of energetic people. He also enjoys playing with other dogs too but doesn’t quite have all the manners down yet so he would be best with a dog that likes rough-housing. Andy is great on leash and enjoys a run. Baylor – 4 Year Old Male. Baylor is a shy kind of guy who takes a little warming up to get used to people. He’s very sweet and doesn’t mind being held, especially after he gets to know you a little!

Mario – 5.5 Year Old Male. Mario is an energetic guy that loves to play so a home with a big yard would be best for him. He is a huge cuddle bug and loves nothing more than long naps in his bucket bed, but he also craves to go out and explore. He loves to play with other dogs too.

Judd – 1.5 Year Old Male. Hi! I’m a big boy but I’m actually a big baby. I want attention all the time, so make sure you leave me plenty of things to keep me busy when you have to leave me alone! Katniss – 6 Year Old Female. Hi I’m Katniss! When it comes to relationships, I’m very levelheaded. I don’t leap in paws first, if you know what I mean. But give me a little time, and then I’ll shower you with purrs, head-butts, and plenty of lap time. In the meantime, you may not see a lot of me but I’ll be thinking a lot of you!

Peeta – 2 Year Old Male. I’m working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you’re under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. If you need a cat who knows how to stay out of trouble and will always keep your secrets, I just might take your case.

Killian – 4 Year Old Male. My name is Killian, I’m a very sweet boy and I adapt very well to my surroundings. I’m also really clean and crate trained! I would do best with other dogs that are easy-going like me. I’m pretty good in the car but better after a walk. Krona – 4 Year Old Female. My name is Krona and I am the biggest baby you will ever meet. I love walks and play time, but I’m also down for just chilling around the house. Mckamey saved my life by curing my heart worms, I owe them a lot so I’m gonna do the most with my life that I can. First thing on my list: find my forever home! My ideal home is with a patient family that won’t rush me into new situations, ideally without super young kids that might overwhelm me, but I’d be perfect first dog material for a couple with a nice yard or an apartment dog. I’m super clean and great in a crate. If you’re looking for a nice chill companion then I am the right girl for you. If you would like to make me a part of your family ask someone at the adoptions desk for more information. September 2018

RIDER SAFETY

SEARCHING FOR SERENITY

T

HIS IS SUMMER I celebrated my 50th birthday. I have friends and family that don’t really enjoy celebrating their birthdays. But for me, I celebrate all month. I’m always happy to be another year older and always feel blessed to open my eyes each morning. Not to mention, it’s always the perfect opportunity for cake! Now that I’ve experienced half a century of life and have enjoyed the opportunity to talk to so many interesting people over the years, I have found that despite our differences, we all do have a few things in common. One of those commonalities is our search for peace, to find that state of being calm and untroubled. It’s the search for serenity. I personally think serenity comes with age. Each decade I’ve found it to be a little easier to come by. Possibly because as I get older, I’ve become more comfortable with myself. I know what makes me happy or unhappy. I know the people I like to be around and those I steer clear of. I’ve also learned over the years that riding my motorcycle brings me happiness, euphoria and contentment that I simply cannot find any other place. As we age, it is important to become aware of how aging affects us so that we may compensate for it and continue riding. While the saying “older and wiser” is typically true, physically we begin to experience changes that may increase our risk when riding. At the young age of 50, I’m noticing my night vision is not as clear as it used to be. Other changes that can be expected as we age include a decrease in physical strength, and an increase in the time it takes to react and altered balance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that

September 2018

fatalities for motorcyclists that are age 60 or older has continued to increase dramatically since 2016. So, how can you help yourself, as you grow older to not be a statistic? Practice these guidelines: • Increase your following distance • Avoid riding at night • Consider a smaller motorcycle or trike • Take a motorcycle safety class to keep your skills sharp • Know what your limitations are • Don’t ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol • Wear gear that enhances your visibility You are wiser as you age, so ride smarter. Recognize what your body is saying to you. Pace yourself, wear your gear, stay in shape and ride within your limits. Motorcycle skills are perishable and we have to recognize this as we get older. Older riders should consider a changed vulnerability to conditions like heat and cold, reaction to medications and recovery from injuries take much longer than at younger ages. Keep riding and I hope you find serenity on each and every ride. As you put your kickstand up, remember that each year you become more vulnerable and that safe riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Bullet Points

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE… G ood day, fellow bikers. As you are reading this, fall is around the corner, and days are getting noticeably shorter. Fall is my favorite time of the year to ride, with cooler temperatures and leaves turning beautiful colors. I hope you find plenty of time to ride this fall. How often do you practice shooting your handgun? I know some of you practice seldom, if ever. There are some of you who purchased your pistol, shot it once, took your handgun carry permit class, and have not shot again since. This is not good. Practice is essential to keep your skills sharp. And while I shoot several thousand rounds per year, I believe it is not enough. Living in the city, I have to go to the range to practice. I really enjoy throwing lead downrange, but it is a 45-minute drive each way to the range. Because of this, I never get as much time shooting my pistols, or rifles, as I should. There is another option – dry fire training. I know, dry fire practice is about as interesting as watching paint dry. Literally. But it does not have to be that way. With your iPhone or Android phone, you can now use its power to make dry fire training interesting, fun and very effective. I recently purchased a MantisX Shooting Performance System. I had heard about it on my favorite podcast, Armed American Radio, and decided to give it a try. The MantisX arrived in a very nice box, making me think of the packaging my last iPhone came in. Included in the box was the MantisX Smart Sensor, micro-USB charging cable (yes, it has a rechargeable battery), quick start guide and a slick storage case. The smart sensor clamps to a standard accessory rail. If your pistol does not have a picatinny rail, the company offers mounting adaptors. While the smart sensor charged, I downloaded the free application to my iPhone and watched a couple of short instructional videos on using the system. MantisX is different than other training systems I have seen. It provides instantaneous feedback on the movements you make moments before pulling the trigger to several moments afterwards. The system goes far beyond where an imaginary bullet would impact an electronic target on your smartphone’s screen. It is designed to improve your form and technique, which will make more real bullets hit the center of your target in real life. NOTE: There have been many, many, many cases where an experienced shooter has had an accidental discharge of their firearm during dry fire training. Remove the magazine and clear the firearm before starting. Remove all magazines and bullets to a different room before starting your dry fire training session. Mounting the smart sensor was quick and easy. Following the onscreen instructions quickly connected the sensor to my phone after which I was told to lay the gun on a table so it could calibrate. The next screen was

September 2018

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

an electronic target and I started my first dry fire training session. The onscreen feedback was immediate with a number from 0-100 telling me how I did: 62 – trigger slap, 92 – good shot, 84 – squeezing too tight, 98 – fantastic shot, 79 – anticipating recoil, 88 – pushing forward, etc. You can review your session, shot-by-shot, with a trace on the target which shows movement before trigger pull, movement during the pull, and movement immediately after the trigger pull – plus an X in the location your shot would have landed on the target. The less movement, the better! The application stores a history of each training session so you can monitor your inevitable improvement. Additionally, you can login to the MantisX website from your computer and connect with other shooters and have mock competitions. On the homepage of the MantisX website (http://www.mantisx.com/) the company claims, “94% of shooters improve after using MantisX for just 20 minutes.” Could this be true? This author believes that bad habits take repetitious practice to overcome with additional practice to train new muscle memory. But being aware of your bad habits is the first step in improving, so the company’s statement is fairly accurate. And most importantly, the MantisX makes your dry fire training more enjoyable without having to leave your living room, man cave or office. The MantisX Training System sells for $149, which is a very reasonable price for a tool which will improve your skills proportionally to the time you invest. If you go to the Armed American Radio website (http:// www.armedamericanradio.org/) and scroll to the bottom of the page, you can also get a discount code (AAR) to receive free shipping on your order – and while you are there – take a listen to Mark Walters fantastic program. Until next month, enjoy the cooler riding weather and keep that shiny side up. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ACCELERATES STRATEGY TO BUILD NEXT GENERATION OF RIDERS GLOBALLY

T

o inspire even more people around the world to experience the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle, Harley-Davidson on July 30th shared details of its “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” growth plan through 2022. In a fast-changing world with new consumer demands, these accelerated actions support Harley-Davidson’s 2027 objectives with increased focus and strategic investment to reinvigorate the U.S. business while accelerating the pace of international growth. “The bold actions we are announcing today leverage Harley-Davidson’s vast capabilities and competitive firepower – our excellence in product development and manufacturing, the global appeal of the brand and of course, our great dealer network,” said Matt Levatich, president and chief executive officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding.” The result of a comprehensive, top-to-bottom assessment incorporating a “customer first” perspective, the More Roads to HarleyDavidson plan includes: • New Products – keep current riders engaged and inspire new riders by extending heavyweight leadership and unlocking new markets and segments • Broader Access – meet customers where they are and how they want to engage with a multi-channel retail experience • Stronger Dealers – drive a performance framework to improve dealer financial strength and the Harley-Davidson customer experience “We expect this plan will result in an engaged, expanded HarleyDavidson community with a more diverse rider base, along with industry-leading margins and cash flow,” said Levatich.

NEW PRODUCTS Leveraging its industry-leading design and strong manufacturing capabilities, Harley-Davidson plans to offer its most comprehensive lineup of motorcycles, competing in many of the largest and fastest growing segments with a full portfolio of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources, displacements, riding styles and global markets. Highlights include: • Extending the company’s leadership in heavyweight motorcycles by continuing to develop improved, more technologically-advanced Touring and Cruiser motorcycles that will keep existing HarleyDavidson riders engaged and riding longer. • Introducing a new modular 500cc to 1250cc middleweight platform of motorcycles that spans three distinct product spaces and four displacements, starting with the company’s first Adventure Touring motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson™ PAN AMERICA™ 1250, a 1250cc CUSTOM model and a 975cc STREETFIGHTER model, all of which are planned to launch beginning in 2020. Additional models to broaden coverage in these product spaces will follow through 2022. • Developing a more accessible, small-displacement (250cc to September 2018

500cc) motorcycle for Asia emerging markets through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia. This new product and broader distribution is intended to fuel • Harley-Davidson’s customer access and growth in India, one of the largest, fastest growing markets in the world, and other Asia markets. • Leading the electric motorcycle market by launching HarleyDavidson’s first electric motorcycle, LIVEWIRE™, in 2019 – the first in a broad, no-clutch “twist and go” portfolio of electric twowheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport. LiveWire will be followed by additional models through 2022 to broaden the portfolio with lighter, smaller and even more accessible product options to inspire new riders with new ways to ride.

BROADER ACCESS Harley-Davidson will advance its market delivery approach and meet today’s customer needs by: • Creating high-engagement customer experiences across all retail channels – including improving and expanding the company’s global digital capabilities by evolving the Harley-Davidson.com experience to integrate with and enhance the dealership retail experience for existing and new customers. • Establishing strategic alliances with global leading e-commerce providers to extend access to Harley-Davidson to a pool of millions of potential new customers. • New retail formats -- including smaller, urban storefronts globally to expose the brand to urban populations and drive sales of the expanded Harley-Davidson product portfolio and expand international apparel distribution.

STRONGER DEALERS Harley-Davidson’s world-class dealer network is an integral part of the company’s accelerated strategy and critical to overall success. The company will implement a performance framework to significantly enhance the strength of the dealer network and the customer experience, enabling the best-performing and most entrepreneurial dealers to drive innovation and success for themselves and HarleyDavidson -- while providing the premium customer experience the brand is known for across an increasingly diverse product and customer base. “Harley-Davidson is iconic because we’ve never been static,” said Levatich. “In moving forward, we are tapping into the spirit that drove our founders back in 1903 and every one of the employees and dealers who rose to the challenges faced along the way. Our plan will redefine existing boundaries of our brand – reaching more customers in a way that reinforces all we stand for as a brand and as a company and we can’t wait to kick it into gear.”

MEMORIAL BIKE This bike is a Firefighter edition ultra that H-D started producing for firefighters to purchase after the attacks of September 11, 2001. As a firefighter and a fire chaplain myself, I wanted to set a theme about the bike to those areas, firefighting and the fire chaplaincy, while honoring those firefighters who died in the attacks of September 11. Going down the left side of the bike the theme covers firefighting and down the right fire chaplaincy is covered, all together, encompassing a 9-11 theme. There are several familiar pictures on the bike and others that people have a lot of questions about. The entire bike’s artwork theme was designed by myself and it was hand painted by the father and son team, Cliff and Keith Jette at Kustom Auto Graphix in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The design took me about two months to come up with and the artwork also took about two months to complete. Items to look for on the bike are the casket of the Fire Chaplain of FDNY, Firefighters raising the U.S. Flag, the blessing of the iron cross found in the wreckage, the tribute of light, Calvary, both the firefighters’ and fire chaplain’s prayers, FDNY mourning badge, on board fire extinguisher, and a lot of chrome and flames. I have taken home awards at every show and event it has been in, to include even 1st place for best paint at a car show! Everyone that has seen it says that it is awesome and a great tribute to those who died and that I have done an excellent job with my bike. I just smile and tell them, “It’s God’s bike, He just lets me ride it.” Be Safe & Be Blessed, Chappy Chaplain_dan_fireman@yahoo.com THE BIKE Owner: Chaplain Dan Davidson Paint: Cliff and Keith Jette at Kustom Auto Graphix Year: 2005 Make: Harley-Davidson Model: Ultra Classic Electra Glide (FLHTCUI) Edition: Firefighter September 2018

KILL DEVIL HILLS

T

he Outer Banks consist of a 200 mile long series of barrier islands and spits, forming the North Carolina coastline and southeastern Virginia. This is one of the most scenic portions of the eastern U.S., due to its long expanses of open beachfront and the Mackay Wildlife and Pea Island Refuges, and the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores. Along NC 12 you can visit the site of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, birthplace of Virginia Dare, picturesque towns and lighthouses, Jockeys Ridge’s massive sand dunes, and, of course, Kill Devil Hills, site of the Wright Brothers’ famous flights. While the Outer Banks are truly great in their own right, here we will focus on the Wright Brothers and the Kill Devil Hills We were all taught that the Wright Brothers famous flights took place at Kitty Hawk. They did, sort of. Actually, the flights took place on Kill Devil Hills, the place, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, and many years before the town of Kill Devil Hills, the town, was incorporated. Today, you take Prospect Road from NC 12 to the site. It was here that the Wright Brothers made the first manned, heavier than air, powered flights. The Wrights owned a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. Although they had a successful business, they became interested in aerodynamics in 1899. Becoming surprised at how little progress had been made, the brothers felt that they had as good a chance at success as anyone else. They spent 4 years and made several hundred glider flights perfecting their idea for wing flexing, for lift and control, and a vertical stabilizer (tail, although in the front). Dissatisfied with the gasoline engines of the day, the brothers built their own version. They also built the first modern propellers, created as vertical rotating wing-shaped devices, like we see in use today. They even constructed their own wind tunnel, to test their theories on lift, created by warping the wings to a bow shape. Choosing Kill Devil Hills for its height and winds, the Wrights

moved their operations. In 1903, they mounted the engine on a 40 foot, 605 pound plane, with 2 elevators and dual counterrotating props. The plane was mounted on a steel rail running down the hill, to keep it stable, as it picked up speed. On the first attempt on December 4, Wilber over steered the plane and it rose too fast, stalled, and dove into the sand. After repairing the plane, on December 17, it was Orville’s turn, where he made the first successful flight of 120 feet. After successively longer flights, each now marked by a monument, with the brothers taking turns, Wilber achieved 852 feet and 59 seconds on their 4th and final flight of the day. Today at Kill Devil Hills is a 10,000 pound, full scale, bronze and steel replica of the plane, complete with rail, Wilber, safety man, and photographer. There is also a reconstructed hanger and 60 foot Wright Brothers Monument atop the 90 foot hill where they flew their gliders. While enjoying the beauty of the Outer Banks, be sure to visit the site where modern aviation began, Kill Devil Hills. It is well worth the time. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

DODGING THE ROADKILL

RIDING A ROAD FILLED WITH INSPIRATION By: Hank Bonecutter Since I’ve been on this journey, I’ve met some incredible people. It’s been one of the great joys of being a biker. My Biker brothers and sisters are genuine and want nothing of me but my friendship and respect. If you’ve never read my story of how I came to be a biker, you can

read it at clarksvillemotorcycle.com My story was featured in the March 2017 issue of American Motorcyclist Magazine. I was overwhelmed by the response I got, from bikers all over the country who had suffered from depression. If I was able to touch just ONE person who had been through the same experience, it was worth it. Along the way, some of the people in my life have given me inspiration to stay true to myself! David, a mentor of mine, was a huge influence on me and we only worked together for a couple of years. It wasn’t until I retired that I realized that what I had learned from him would be the reason for my professional success. We had lost touch and hadn’t seen each other in over thirty years, but when we reconnected on Facebook, I knew that I had to find a way to go to him and thank him for his influence. It was an amazing experience to come face to face with him, after all these years, and to thank him for how instrumental he was in my career. He was one of the best salesmen I have ever known. David and Me in Texas Not only that, but he’s been a lifelong biker. When I decided to buy a motorcycle, he was invaluable to me on how to buy, what to buy and what I needed to know about the culture. He taught me things about how to ride. He helped pick me up when I dropped the bike. After all, he had been a motorcycle cop for thirty years. When I finally bought my first bike, the first trip I took was to Texas. I had to show David what I had done. You never get tired of the approval you get from a mentor! INSPIRATION! This motorcycle has taken me to places where I’ve met some incredible people. Last August, I traveled to Mountain View, Arkansas for their annual September 2018

festival. “Mountains, Music and Motorcycles.” While I was there, I had the opportunity to meet many bikers from all over the country. One stood out to me and I will never forget him. His name was “Chainsaw.” I never got his real name. He was about 70 years old and had battled cancer since 2000. It had come and gone, but this time, it had him. He had maybe six months to live. During the week of the festival he was scheduled for cancer treatment, but he said, “to hell with it, I’m gonna ride!” We spent about 30 minutes just talking. Talking about life. He talked about the bikes he had owned. The places he had traveled in his life. He was old school. Chainsaw We talked about motorcycles, women, brothers and bikers. We talked about life and death. He was at peace with where he was and where he was going. As he lit another cigarette, I prayed with him. I asked God to give him strength, and comfort and to bless him in a mighty way. As I walked away, I had tears in my eyes and I knew I would never see him again. But he impacted me in a powerful way. He was comfortable with his life. His life as a biker. What he had seen, where he had gone. He wasn’t concerned about death because he had LIVED! INSPIRATION! Finally, I was blessed to have met a special young man last summer. While I was on vacation, I met Dusty. Dusty was born with Spina Bifida, and has been disabled all of his life. We spent many hours during that sunny beautiful week in Florida, just talking. Talking about life and what it was like to live his life in a “chair.” The challenges he faces each and every day. The things he will NEVER be able to do. He is the strongest human being I have EVER met. I don’t think he knows it, but he is special. He worries about the little things, and gets frustrated easily, but I guess he’s entitled to blow off a little steam every now and again. Dusty is a special person with amazing talent and a beautiful personality. He reminds me every day that life is short and Dusty Stanfil you only get one chance at it, so give it your best shot. Remember, it’s not the elephants that kill you, it’s the piss ants that stomp you to death. Don’t sweat the small stuff. There are people who would KILL to have my problems today. INSPIRATION! So as I plan my next trip, I revel in the anticipation of what lies ahead. The people I will meet, or the friends I will reconnect with. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I don’t have to look too far for inspiration. I just glance over the handlebars.

MOZZARELLA STUFFED MEATBALLS ON THE GRILL Olive Oil Cooking Spray 1 Bag of Italian-Style Meatballs (quality, & thawed) Dry Ingredients: (bottle style works great, but if you’re a stickler for fresh herbs, have at it.) 1/2 tsp. Oregano 1/2 tsp. Basil 1/2 tsp. Italian Seasoning 1/2 tsp. Parsley 1/2 tsp. Chives 1/4 tsp. Crushed Red Pepper Flakes 1/2 Cup of Worcestershire Sauce 1/4 Cup of Liquid Smoke 24 Small Cubes of Fresh Mozzarella Salt & Pepper to Taste Place all your frozen meatballs in a bowl and allow them to thaw thoroughly (apprx. 3 hours). Mix all your dry ingredients together in a small bowl. Get your electric grill (or charcoal; your pref.) going on medium and well heated up. Next, take each meatball and press your finger well into it, but not through it, and put one small cube of fresh Mozza-rella cheese pushed to the center of meatball, and then gently keep pulling meat to bring it back to-gether as a ball. Pour your Worcestershire Sauce & Liquid Smoke combined, all over your meatballs in the big bowl and make sure each is wet. Take dry hands and a big pinch at a time, place combined herb mixture in your hands and rub together over the meatballs. This helps wake up the flavor of dry spices. Each time you sprinkle herbs on meatballs, get in there with your hands and move the meat-balls around until all are well coated with spices. Spray grill with Olive Oil spray and gently place meatballs on grill. You’ll have to watch carefully and keep turning. Have a big bowl shaped piece of aluminum foil on other side of grill and after you’ve obtained the great grill marks, transfer meatballs to foil, turn heat way down and just let them continue to cook on grill. The second you see any cheese oozing out of any single one...they’re done. Heat up a jar of chunky spaghetti sauce as a dip. These are fun to make and taste Delizioso’!

EASY GRILLIN’ CORN IN HUSKS Right now is the perfect time for Mennonite corn on the cob! First off, peel back husks to stem, but do not remove them completely. Desilk the corn, get all that very fine corn hair off of it. Rub clean hands up and down the corn looking for any stubborn little pieces. If need be, use a damp cloth. Spread any of the custom butters below and slather it all over your ear of corn. Gently pull husks back up and in place and tie with kitchen string. Grill corn directly on the grill over medium heat, uncovered for 25 minutes.Turn occasionally to ensure even cooking throughout. PARSLEY & CHIVE BUTTER Take one stick of real butter; softened, place in small bowl an add 2 Tablespoons of fresh or dried parsley and 2 Tablespoons of fresh or dried chives. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly and you’ve got a kickin’ good butter perfect for your corn on the cob. WASABI BUTTER Again, take one stick of real butter, softened, place in small bowl and add 2 Tablespoons of chopped green onion (scallions and 2 tsps. of prepared Wasabi and 1/2 tsp. of Soy Sauce. MAPLE, PAPRIKA & CHILI BUTTER You got it; 1 stick of softened butter in a bowl, then add 1/4 cup of quality maple syrup, 1 Table-spoon of Paprika and 1 level tsp. of chili powder. This has a good, bold flavor to it, yet mellowed by the maple. REAL FRUIT JUICE BUTTER 1 stick of softened butter in a bowl, add the juice of one lime, plus zest of one lime, the juice of one lemon, plus zest and lastly, the juice of one orange and zest. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

EPA ADMITS ETHANOL CAUSES ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE “The federal requirement to blend ethanol into gasoline on the theory that it will reduce the hypothetical global warming that hasn’t appeared yet has been a joke from the start,” states a newsbit circulated by Bikernet.com, and that “By adding a huge amount of demand for corn, it did push up prices for that commodity, and made vast swaths of the rural Midwest prosperous, though it has injured poor Mexicans and others who depend on corn for a substantial portion of their nutrition and driven up the price of feed used for animals, raising meat prices.” The net energy balance of ethanol production – subtracting the amount of energy necessary to grow the corn, transport it to refineries, and then transport the ethanol to gasoline producers, has been considered a substantial net energy gain. But now the EPA has finally issued a new report and admits that the ethanol mandate comes at a considerable environmental cost. The Public News Service summarizes: “Federal law requires the EPA to assess the environmental impact of the fuel standard every three years, but the new report, issued in July, was four years overdue. According to David DeGennaro with the National Wildlife Federation, the report documents millions of acres of wildlife habitat lost to ethanol crop production, increased nutrient pollution in waterways and air emissions and side effects worse than the gasoline the ethanol is replacing.” “The bigger surprise is the fact that ethanol production and combustion significantly increases the production of nitrous oxides (Nox),” notes HotAir.com. “This combines with oxygen in the atmosphere when exposed to sunlight, producing ozone… and actually contributes to the formation of smog and leads to respiratory ailments for many people.” None of this speaks to the excessive costs that ethanol forces on drivers and auto manufacturers, says Bikernet.com, concluding that; “Alas, the mandate is so popular with corn farmers in Iowa, home of the first round of presidential nominations, that President Trump (and other politicians) not only maintain the mandate, President Trump recently told an audience in Iowa that he was ‘very close’ to having EPA issue a waiver to the Clean Air Act to allow year-round sale of E-15.” SYNTHETIC PETROL IS ON ITS WAY The concept of fuel for your bike that doesn’t drain our dwindling oil reserves and offsets its C02 emissions with its very production is closer than we think, according to MotorcycleNews. com. “For decades, boffins have been trying to work out ways to synthesize petrol (gasoline) and diesel, but with recent strides by Ducati owners Audi and tech giants Bosch, synfuels could hit our pumps within the next decade.” The theory is to harness our natural resources to make petrol and diesel and be able to produce it on an industrial scale so

34

that prices can match current fuel costs. “The new fuel has many advantages. It isn’t dependent on crude oil, it is compatible with the existing infrastructure and it offers the prospect of a closed carbon cycle,” says Reiner Mangold, head of sustainable product development at Audi. A huge amount of energy is necessary to process the fuel, but Audi and Bosch’s plans involve a renewable energy source, such as solar or hydroelectric, to power the process. They say renewable electricity can make the process carbon neutral. When combined with a potential carbon-free production process, it means internal combustion could be part of the environmental solution rather than the problem. While all this might sound like science fiction, Audi produced their first synthetic petrol earlier this year, called e-Benzin, and is currently constructing a diesel production plant in Switzerland powered by hydroelectricity from a nearby dam. Mass production of this petrol is the next obvious step. ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES DOWN AT STURGIS, DESPITE BIGGER CROWD The number of fatal crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was half that of last year’s count, according to statistics released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. During the twoweek event, there were four fatal crashes, compared to eight during the same time period last year. Both injury and noninjury accidents were down more than 10% compared to 2017, and total citations issued during Sturgis were also down nearly ten percent to 987. Meanwhile, more than half a million vehicles rolled into the small western South Dakota town of 6,900. Data gathered by the South Dakota Department of Transportation from nine locations around Sturgis show a nearly 8% increase in traffic over last year, which saw 469,100 vehicles. For this year’s 78th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the tally was 505,969 vehicles, which includes motorcycles, automobiles, trucks and motor homes. Still, the number was shy of the 2015 traffic, when 747,032 vehicles rolled into the city for the 75th annual rally.

MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY TRYING TO ATTRACT NEW RIDERS Motorcycling in America is getting a makeover, as industry stalwarts and upstart competitors are trying to attract new riders who want something different from Harley’s big burbling cruisers or screaming Japanese and European performance bikes, says CNNMoney. The changes are in response to younger riders who are attracted to the efficiency and fun of two-wheel travel, but who don’t want to buy into all the “biker” baggage. “Millennials and Gen X’ers, they aren’t always seeking to make motorcycling a lifestyle, where it’s kind of everything you live for,” said Tim Buche, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. These younger riders are looking for motorcycles suited to a more casual relationship rather than a

NEWS BYTES serious commitment. With shifting tastes, some start-up motorcycle makers are offering “green” electric bikes, without the noise, vibration and pollutants of an internal combustion engine, while more well-established brands are putting design emphasis on spare simplicity, targeted at a more casual rider. Even long-venerated Harley-Davidson announced it will start offering products aimed at reaching customers who aren’t traditionally drawn to its renowned American retro-styled offerings, and will produce their first electric motorcycle -- the all-new LiveWire -- in 2019. HARLEY REFUTES ‘MISINFORMATION’ ABOUT MOVING PRODUCTION OFFSHORE Harley-Davidson Inc. Chief Executive Officer Matt Levatich pushed back against what he called “misinformation” surrounding the Motor Company’s announced plans to move some production overseas. The iconic American motorcycle maker has been the subject of angry tweets from President Donald Trump since announcing in June it would move some production abroad to sidestep tariffs the European Union slapped on its bikes in retaliation to Trump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. According to Bloomberg business news, “the spat heated up recently when President Trump said he would support a boycott of the company if it moved production overseas.” Trump’s pronouncement that “A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never!,” came a day after he welcomed nearly 200 ‘Bikers For Trump’ supporters to his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, and a New York Times article cited some Harley-Davidson owners criticizing the company at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally saying this was their last Harley. Levatich said that the uproar surrounding the company’s earlier announcement that it would move some of its production overseas “misinformation”. He reminded employees and dealers that the purpose of this move is to keep their products competitive in their second biggest market. Harley doesn’t sell motorcycles in the U.S. that are built overseas, and that won’t change, Levatich said. September 2018

NEW MEXICO MRO CALLS OUT SHERIFFS DEPUTIES FOR PROFILING BIKERS A motorcycle rights group in New Mexico is calling out the Bernalillo County Sheriff, claiming his deputies are profiling motorcyclists. “Being profiled, it’s not a comfortable feeling,” said Raymond Gallegos of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO), saying there’s been a string of incidents with BCSO, prompting them to write a letter to Sheriff Manuel Gonzales. Some see the patches, the leather and certain colors on riders and assume criminal. However, Gallegos, vice chair of the NMMRO, says that’s far from the truth. “So many of our organizations really benefit the community. We’re working for charities, we’re raising money for this organization or that organization,” he told KRQE News 13. Gallegos says members of the NMMRO have reported three incidents over the last year that call into question BCSO’s practices. It led the group to write a letter to Sheriff Gonzales that calls out the department for harassing, intimidating and even photographing riders. So, NMMRO set up a meeting for July 30 with the sheriff. “We really wanted to see how our community and BCSO could work together to get ahead of this profiling issue,” he said. “That was the intent of this meeting with the sheriff’s department.” However, the meeting was canceled at the 11th hour and the department told KRQE that there’s an ongoing operation to address reckless motorcyclists, but that deputies do not profile riders. A re-do meeting has since been rescheduled, though NMMRO says it’s also pursuing anti-profiling legislation, and is encouraging its members who were allegedly profiled to seek legal counsel. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: In my last three articles I’ve talked about my time in Vietnam 50 years ago. September is a special month for me. It’s my birth month and it is also the month of Prisoner of War/ Missing in Action Recognition Day which is the third Friday of September. I’m the Vice Chairman for The Ride Home, Inc. This is America’s largest event to personally honor former prisoners of war and the families of service members who are still missing in action from all wars. This year the event will be held in Warner Robbins, Georgia from the 19th through the 21st. You can learn more about the special event at www. theridehome.com. The public is invited!! I turned 19 in September of1968 at Blackhorse Basecamp in Vietnam. For my birthday I got a package from my mother that contained a birthday card and a bunch of home made toll house chocolate chip cookies. My grandmother sent me a small handheld battery powered fan that had two-inch blades to make a cool breeze in the heat. The cookies were really good and a nice touch of home. The fan was a novelty and a nice thought but it really didn’t help much in the heat of Vietnam and batteries weren’t that easy to come by. When we weren’t working in the little control tower we usually did details. That usually meant filling sandbags, cutting tops out of 50-gallon drums with an axe so they could be filled with sandbags and lined up around the outside of our hootches for shrapnel protection or just general clean up and maintenance. I made friends with a couple of guys in the Long-Range Recon Patrol (LRRP) and would catch up on their latest exploit into danger or talk with the Air Cav helicopter pilots or the Air Force Forward Air Controllers. Most of them didn’t mind passing a little education on to a young troop who was interested. On occasion you’d get word that someone you knew or knew of had gotten wounded or killed. I always felt bad for them but it was something that could happen to any of us in a war zone. One tall Lieutenant who flew an OH-6 observation helicopter came back from a mission and shut down in a parking spot. He got out while the rotors were still turning slowly. He was just tall enough that one of the blades smacked him in the head. It put a dent in his head and they air evac’d him out but I heard he managed to survive it. Sometimes it’s good to be average height. Another time I 36

said hi to a big red headed Cav Major as he climbed into a Cobra Gunship and flew out going someplace. I heard later that he and the Cobra just disappeared. I guess something happened and the jungle just swallowed him up. On another occasion the airfield at Long Thanh was getting a lot of mortar and rocket fire at night. They decided to bring some of their aircraft to Blackhorse to keep them from getting hit after dark. The next morning two pairs of UH-1 Charlie model gunships hovered out to the runway to head back to Long Thanh. We had some patchy but heavy low-level fog that morning so I cleared them for take off and told them to turn right after takeoff to avoid the little mountain we had on the east side of the base. Two turned right and two went into the fog and turned left. The ones that turned left smacked into the back side of the mountain. No survivors. The jungle was thick enough that when something like that happened they would rappel or walk some folks in to the site, secure the crash and load the dead in body bags. A helicopter would lower a rope into the jungle. It would get tied onto the body bag(s) and then get lifted out and flown back to the base. They usually set them down in front of the control tower for transport to the casualty hootch. In Vietnam when someone got wounded or killed they just disappeared. On occasion someone who wasn’t wounded very badly would go back to their unit but most of the time the badly wounded and dead went out of country and back home. The brothers who stayed in country knew the wounded and dead but most of the time it was very disassociated from long recoveries or funerals and the grief of families. Those who remained still had to make it through another day and try to make sure they didn’t leave the same way. Vietnam was very different from what I experienced in the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Later in my career I got into special operations. I was based in the states and traveled out of country a lot. When someone got hurt or killed it was a different deal. I knew the family, I went to the funerals, I visited the hospital, investigated incidents and saw the sacrifice of service in a much more complete and personal way. After I get Vietnam out of my system I may write a little about my post-Vietnam military career. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

A husband and wife were sitting watching a TV program about psychology which was explaining the phenomenon of “mixed emotions”. The husband turned to his wife and said, “That is an absolute bunch of crap. I bet you can’t tell me one thing that will make me happy and sad at the exact same time. She said: “Out of all your friends, you have the biggest penis.” -------------------------------------------------------------A married couple is driving down the interstate doing 55 mph. His wife looks over at him and says, “Honey, I know we’ve been married for 15 years, but, I want a divorce.” The husband says nothing but slowly increases speed to 60 mph. She then says, “I don’t want you to try to talk me out of it, because I’ve been having an affair with your best friend, and he’s a much better lover than you.” Again the husband stays quiet and just speeds up as his anger increases. She says, “I want the house.” Again the husband speeds up, and now is doing 70 mph. She says, “I want the kids, too.” The husband just keeps driving faster, and faster, now he’s up to 80 mph. She says, “I want the car, the checking account, and all the credit cards, too.” The husband slowly starts to veer toward a bridge overpass piling, as she says, “Is there anything you want?” The husband says, “No, I’ve got everything I need.” She smirked and said, “what’s that?” The husband replies just before they hit the wall at 90 mph, “I’ve got the airbag!” -------------------------------------------------------------The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30” she said proudly, “My sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.” “Very good”, said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. “I sold magazines” she said, “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.” “Very good, Debbie”, said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher’s desk. Proudly he boasted “$2,467. bucks!”.

38

”$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?” ”‘Toothbrushes”, said Little Johnny. “How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?” “Well, I found the busiest corner in town”, said Little Johnny, “I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample. “They all said the same thing, “Hey, this tastes like dog chit!” Then I would say, “It is dog chit. Hey, wanna’ buy a toothbrush? --------------------------------------------------------------While examining his lady patient, the doctor tells her: “Your heart, lungs, pulse & BP are fine. Now let me see that cute little thing which gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble.” The woman a tad turned on by the young doctor starts quickly taking off her slacks and panties and is standing nude from the waist down. The Doctor turned around , stopping her and said: “No! No! Please put on your clothes. I meant for you to just show me your tongue.” --------------------------------------------------------------A Steel Cowboy’s Tombstone: The Headstone of Russell J. Larsen in the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Utah . I wonder if he died knowing he won the ‘Coolest Headstone’ contest? His five rules for a happy life are at the bottom in on his headstone Five Rules For Men To Follow For A Happy Life: 1. It’s important to have a woman who helps out at home, cooks several times a week, keeps a clean home and has a steady job. 2. It’s important to have a woman who can make you laugh and laughs at herself too. 3. It’s important to have a woman who you can trust, and doesn’t lie to you, and loyal. 4. It’s important to have a woman who is a bit of a wildcat in bed and actually enjoys sex. 5. It’s very, very important that these four women do not know each other or you most assuredly will end up dead like me. --------------------------------------------------------------My wife was screaming at me: “Leave!! Get out of this house!” she ordered. I don’t want to ever see your face again!”. As I was walking out the door she yelled, “I hope you die a slow and painful death!” So I turned around and replied “So, now you want me to stay?”
