ello everyone, this month our letter will be short and sweet. We have been in Canada for the last week visiting our two grandbabies that we haven’t seen in 17 months due to Covid traveling restrictions. Today we are heading home so we’ll be traveling all day. It will be a bitter sweet goodbye and we will miss our precious little ones until the next time we see them in October, but… thank goodness for Skype! It’s hard to believe we’re into the last laps of summer! Fall is right around the corner, officially it starts on the 22nd of this month and I cannot wait. It is my favorite time of the year in general, but it’s also my favorite time of the year for riding because the scenery is ideal, there is a lot of beauty to be seen in our neck of the woods! It’s also my favorite time for attending events and there are a lot of great ones coming up this month! The Bent Wrench Re-Opening Party, the 4th Annual Cherokee Blue Ridge Run, the 16th Annual Redneck Rumble, the 40th Annual Leslie W. Watson Memorial Toy Run & BWC Benefit Party, just to name a few. Check out the events page for more fun events to attend. This month is Patriot and National POW/MIA Recognition Days and we would like to take a moment and remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001 and to remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA), as well as their families. With Scott being a fireman, and me the wife of a fireman, 9-11 is an especially difficult day at our house. I don’t think anybody will ever forget where they were that morning, I know we won’t. NEVER FORGET. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend and please be safe on the roads. And as always, please support to our amazing advertisers that support us by shopping at their businesses when you’re in need of a product or service they provide. Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

ackson County Park is located on Guntersville Lake, a part of the Tennessee River, in Scottsboro, AL. A short drive from Monteagle and Chattanooga, and about three hours from Nashville, the park offers a variety of amenities. Our hardcore riders can choose tent camping on the waterfront. Seeking more comfort? The park has brand new two bedroom cabins with all of the comforts of home, but with a beautiful view. Toy hauler owners can acquire a waterfront site and haul their boat to enjoy fishing or boating on the beautiful lake. In addition, there are transient boat slips, covered fishing pier and walking trails, as well as K.C. BBQ and a

camp store (with beer and wine) on site. Golf carts are welcome and handy. Boat rentals are available for those wanting to venture out on the water.

Tired of the quiet and serenity of the lake area? The town of Scottsboro offers “shopping therapy” including the nationally known Unclaimed Baggage store and Patches, an antique, craft and junk emporium. Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain serves up all of your ice cream treats in 1950’s style décor. For more upscale dinning, The Docks Seafood and Steakhouse in Goose Pond Colony Resort is about 7 miles from Scottsboro and fa-

mous for their shrimp and grits, accompanied by Andouille sausage. For the photographer or adventurer, Pisgah Gorge Falls, Neversink Pit, and Stephens Gap Cave are nearby. Near Frackler, AL you can drive by Rock Zoo and view the whimsical rocks carved and painted to resemble animals lining the roadside. What? Don’t tell me you didn’t visit the Cadillac Ranch when near Amarillo, TX. The park is a perfect stop to relax and rest up for a vacation or just an overnight on your next southern adventure. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

BULLET POINTS

MYTH VS FACTS ABOUT SUPPRESSORS (NOT SILENCERS) By Scott High Wikipedia defines a Suppressor as a… A suppressor, sound suppressor, sound moderator, or silencer is a device attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm or air gun, which reduces the amount of noise and visible muzzle flash generated by firing. Suppressors are typically constructed of a metal cylinder with internal mechanisms to reduce the sound of firing by slowing the escaping propellant gas and can also slightly increase the speed of the bullet.[1][2] Can I legally own a Suppressor? Yes, while the process is not a fast one, you can legally own a suppressor. If you live in one of the 39 states in which you can legally own a suppressor, please exercise your rights and do so. I recommend doing the research and talking to your local gun stores, and figure out what will work best for you. Research is easily accessible on the Internet on the subject (Google suppressor and a variety of websites are dedicated to the subject), as Suppressors have become very popular in the last few years. Websites such as SilencerCo.com or Advanced Armaments website http://www.aaccanu.com have current laws and regulations on who and how to purchase, including the Federal laws associated with the purchase of these tools used with firearms. The first step in buying a suppressor is finding a gun shop that carries the brand that you like and is compatible with your rifle or pistol. When you find your local dealer, you begin the long process of purchasing your suppressor. Does a suppressor make my rifle silent? This is a myth that many believe to be true, that is perpetuated by movies. You can put a suppressor on your pistol or rifle, but it will never be silent. They do make specialized ammunition that is designed to be fired through a suppressor and it is much quieter, but still not silent. Suppressors are used by the military and law enforcement in order to lesson or deaden the sound coming from a firearm. It is difficult to pin point where the shooter of a suppressed rifle is, which can be a great benefit to a sniper trying to stay concealed and shoot his rifle. A Suppressor has the added benefit of reducing the muzzle flash (or fire that leaves the barrel) after you fire a weapon. This is a benefit for those who fire their firearms in ranges or close proximity to others. Using your suppressor on the range makes your experience that day a pleasant one. Not having to wear oversized ear protection or something uncomfortable but necessary in order to preserve your hearing is the greatest benefit. Using suppressors to teach young children to shoot making the day a much more enjoyable. Being able to talk and not yell at one another is a great instruction tool. Can law Enforcement come into my house at anytime if I own a suppressor? No the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agency or Law Enforcement agency in your area cannot enter your home simply for owning what is considered a class IV firearm, or suppressor. If you are using a suppressor on a range and you attract attention from either law enforcement or

curious onlookers, it is always wise to have your completed paperwork (tax stamp) with you. If I travel out of state with a suppressor do I have to inform the ATF? If you need to travel out of your home state for any reason with your suppressor, you do not need to inform the ATF. However, any other NFA (National Firearms Act Machine Gun, or Short Barreled Rifle SBR) registered firearm that is moved between states, form 5320.20 will have to be filled out and sent to the ATF. Can my local Law Enforcement deny my purchase of a NFA item or suppressor? Your local law enforcement agency does have a signature line on the Form 4 when filling out paperwork for an individual from the ATF. If your area is suppressor unfriendly, you can start what is called a gun trust. The benefit of having a gun trust is family members can use the suppressor, You can pass the item down in your will if the family member is able to own an NFA item, the process of purchasing a NFA item is stream lined for people who have a gun trust, and the time spent waiting has been reported to be significantly shorter with those filing for an NFA item when using a Gun Trust. I would recommend finding a lawyer in your area that has experience in creating a gun trust and getting the facts from the expert on that subject. It is best to do your research and speak to those who have gone through the process before undertaking the arduous task of a class IV purchase. It is your constitutional right to own firearms please do so! Education is the key to navigating the system of dealing with buying a suppressor. I am by no means an expert on the subject so please check your local laws and have a strong understanding of them to protect yourself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE There are some Old Testament truths being taught in the New Testament Church today concerning “Spiritual Warfare,” they just don’t line up with the New Testament reality. But because they have been passed down through generations of denominational doctrines, people just accept it as gospel without studying it out in God’s Word. Most Christians believe that Satan is the 2nd power to God because he was once a powerful angel. But the truth is; the only power he has is what we give to him, before man sinned in the Garden. satan couldn’t harm us without our consent or our cooperation. Job.1:6-12 (Old Testament) “…Satan answered the lord, from going to & fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it.” Vs. 12 “…all that he has is in thy power; only himself put not forth thine hand.” Satan could do nothing without God’s permission. 1 Pet.5:8 (New Testament) “…the devil AS a roaring lion, walks about seeking whom he MAY devour.” Satan is an imitator, like a wolf pack, he seeks out the weak. In the Old Testament Gen.18:20-26 Abraham stood in the gap between God and man at Sodom & Gomorrah. In Exodus 32:7-14 Moses was standing in the gap between God and man after God’s people had corrupted themselves by “turning aside from God, making a molten calf, worshipping & sacrificing unto it.” Abraham & Moses were acting as a “Mediator;” a person that stands between two parties that are in conflict with each other while bringing both into an agreement. Some believers today believe that all these diseases, pandemics, environmental disasters, violence, and a fallen economy, is a judgement from God. Today we have many believers feel that they are called into a prayer ministry for America, begging God to spare America from His judgement. New Testament; 1 Tim.2:5 “For there is one God and ONE MEDIATOR between God & man, the man Christ Jesus.” Jesus has paid the price for God’s judgement. If the devil can run you into your “prayer closet,” keep you “binding him up,” and “casting him out,” then you can’t be doing what God has

called you to do; “Go ye therefore into all the world…” satan has you in a “cat & mouse” game while you become useless to the Kingdom of God. The price for America was paid in full at the cross, what America is experiencing is “Seed time and harvest.” We are destroying ourselves! The best way we can fight & win this “Spiritual Warfare” is by winning the lost to Christ, discipling other believers in Revelation knowledge and spiritual truths, and yes, proper prayer by the Word of God. Remember; “for there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus,” and you’re not it! Come out of your prayer closet, everybody else has, you can fight and pray at the same time. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

riday September 17, 2021 is Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day. As I write this, I am assuming the Biden Administration will issue the traditional proclamation and hold an appropriate ceremony to commemorate the day. We have recently seen this administration refuse to grant the traditional Pentagon parking lot permit for the annual Memorial Day POW/MIA protest rally and wait until spring to make that known in order to cause a major scramble in hopes the ride would not come together. The ride did come together, although much smaller, and assembled at the Washington Football stadium as pro Hamas and Palestinians protested against United States support for Israel. Another case of American patriots being shunned while anti-Americans are supported. Our POWs and MIAs deserve better honor and respect!! We only have to look at 2020 to see government prejudice. Antifa and the Marxist organization Black Lives Matter, were granted basic immunity to protest, burn cities and trash historical monuments across the nation. Those participating in Marxist anti-American events last year were encouraged by Democrats, not subjected to Covid oppression and allowed to abuse anyone attempting to protect businesses, cities and citizens. This year the Marxist violent groups directed by the Marxist Democrat party have been restrained because the Marxists now control the Presidency, the Congress and Senate. The Marxists don’t need their violent groups at this point because they have the Capitol police, FBI, CDC, NSA, CIA, EPA, Department of the Interior, USDA and all of the keys to control our society and make us comply with the conversion of our constitutional republic to an American Marxist nation. The first thing Biden did was undermine every positive economic action the Trump administration did. Now we are seeing inflation of 3% to 5% monthly with only a predicted government 2% to 3% annual cost of living allowance. The dollar is being devalued!! That is only going to get worse now that Dems and RINOs added several trillion dollars to our national debt with a majority of that spending going to programs that further cement Marxist control. We are being baited with free money so we won’t revolt as they change our economic system and transition all government agencies into tools of Marxist oppression. They will pay people to not work as a means of shutting down small businesses and promoting large multi-national corporations that follow Marxist instructions from the administration. You can already see critical race theory being implemented in these corporations and if workers don’t go along with corporate racism, they get fired. These policies are against the law and the constitution but that isn’t stopping the Biden Administration. They control the justice department so you won’t see any prosecutions of those who are violating the law or the constitution just like last year with the protestors. They are now institutionalizing Marxist speak in our schools and agencies!!!

When the federal government refuses to follow the law and enforces law with harsh penalties only on those who are standing for law, order and the constitution what do you get??? You get a law-abiding society that is turned into outlaws targeted by the federal government. That is hard core tyranny!! They are using social media to gather information on individuals to target. The push by the Marxists to defund police is the initial act to set up a federal police force that will take control over time and replace local law enforcement. If states don’t stand up to the federal government the federal government will undermine the 10th amendment and force states into compliance with unconstitutional edicts by the Marxists. How is it the government is refusing to enforce border security? How do they get away with taking constitutional rights away from landlords? How is it they cancel domestic oil production and make us dependent on OPEC again for our gas and oil? Of course, you know Covid masking and restrictions are just a part of the Marxist strategy to shut down small business and force us to obey and depend on government subsidy to survive. I could go on with the easy predictions for the future if the Marxists are not routed out of our government but what can we do about all of this? First of all, we can read and understand the United States Constitution so we know what our freedoms are and what the government can and can’t do if it obeys the laws of our nation. Second, we can get involved in politics and make sure we vote for Americans who follow the constitution as written. When it comes to unlawful edicts by government we must resist and ignore the unlawful commands and protest. If we don’t, we just become compliant slaves of the Marxists. If we don’t stand for freedom and our rights now, we are supporting our own destruction. Small compliance today gives the Marxists more power to tighten the screws and drive the final nails into our coffin in the future. There is no middle ground. We stand for freedom today or suffer the decent into slavery. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. NEWS BYTES

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

NCOM CONVENTION PUTS THE HEART IN AMERICA’S HEARTLAND Hundreds of biker’s rights activists from across the country gathered in America’s Heartland to discuss strategies and hear status updates regarding key issues of importance to all concerned motorcyclists, as the NCOM Convention convened July 23-25, 2021 at the Holiday Inn - Airport in Des Moines, Iowa for a weekend of learning, sharing and camaraderie. From First Aid to traffic stops, this year’s NCOM Convention addressed legal, legislative and lifesaving topics, including a featured presentation on “The Demise of Gas-Powered Vehicles” by the NCOM Legislative Task Force that explored existential threats to our sport and lifestyle. Other informative seminars included “Insurance Law and the Big Fight” during the A.I.M. Attorney Conference along with a “Biker’s View of the Law” talk by NCOM Public Relations Liaison Bill Bish, and “Protect Your Privacy & Probable Cause” by A.I.M. Attorney Joey Lester. The Silver Spoke Awards Banquet honored Darrin Brook, Vice President of ABATE of Florida, with the Silver Spoke Award for Media; Michigan A.I.M. Attorney Dondi Vesprini for Legal, and in a stirring dedication, Boar, NCOM Board of Directors Club Liaison, presented the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award, NCOM’s highest honor, to former EMS Dick “Slider” Gilmore, SOS for his lively and life-saving “Two Wheel Trauma” first responder presentations across the country over the years. NCOM Board Chairman James “Doc” Reichenbach adjourned with a reminder that next year’s NCOM Convention is scheduled for June 23-25, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee, so check back at www.ON-A-BIKE.com for further details as they develop. SENATE PASSES HIGHWAY BILL WITHOUT MOST MOTORCYCLE PROVISIONS The U.S. Senate passed their version of the Highway Bill 6930 on August 10, a $1.2 trillion 2,000+ page Infrastructure measure to rebuild the nation’s deteriorating roads and bridges and fund new climate resilience and broadband initiatives, but lacking the motorcycle-friendly provisions of the previouslypassed House version, including only the reestablishment of the Motorcyclists Advisory Council (MAC). The House Highway Bill contains several key provisions benefiting motorcycle riders; such as expanding prohibitions on motorcycle-only checkpoints, prohibiting law enforcement activities that profile motorcycle operators, evaluating biker profiling by law enforcement, specifies that motorcycles must be considered in autonomous vehicle operation, allocates increased motorcyclist safety funding, and reauthorizes the MAC at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Typically, the Highway Bill would be taken up by a conference committee of both chambers to iron out any differences before sending a final compromise measure to the President for his signature or veto, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has indicated that they will not take up the bill until the Senate passes a separate, even more ambitious $3.5 trillion social policy bill. It could take months for Congress to pass both measures, if ever, but the current surface transportation bill expires on September 30 unless the deadline is extended. FEDS LAUNCH BROAD INVESTIGATION INTO AUTOPILOT ACCIDENTS U.S. regulators have launched the biggest investigation of Tesla’s Autopilot software since the driving-assistance technology was introduced, investigating a string of collisions with emergency vehicles that resulted in numerous injuries and at least one fatality. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced its Office of Defect Investigations opened the official review on August 13 to look into 11 crashes across 9 states involving Teslas hitting vehicles at “first responder scenes.” An estimated 765,000 vehicles produced between 2014 and 2021, including every Tesla model, are covered in the investigation. It will “assess the technologies and methods used to monitor, assist and enforce the driver's engagement with the dynamic driving task during Autopilot operation,” NHTSA said. The investigation will assess the effectiveness of the system’s “Object and Event Detection and Response” and circumstances under which Autopilot is designed to be functional. The probe adds to the pressure on Tesla following a series of safety investigations in China this year and as regulators around the world grow increasingly concerned about nascent autonomous driving technology. CALIFORNIA ADOPTS ANTI-PROFILING RESOLUTION California’s state Senate has passed Senate Resolution 41 by a vote of 39-0 on July 12 to “promote increased public awareness on the issue of motorcyclist profiling.” Introduced by state Senator Anna Caballero (D-Salinas), SR-41 “encourages collaboration and communication between the motorcycle community and local and state law enforcement agencies to engage in efforts to end motorcycle profiling,” and further “urges state law enforcement officials to include statements condemning motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials.” Motorcycle profiling is defined as “the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement

action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the Constitution of the United States.” VIRGINIA TO STUDY LANE-FILTERING When House Bill 1236 to permit “lane-filtering” stalled last year on a 3-3 tied vote in subcommittee, Virginia Senator David Marsden (D-Fairfax Co.), chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, requested the state's department of motor vehicles to commission a stakeholder study on the possibility of motorcycle lane-filtering. "Several meetings will take place between now and the end of the year, at which point the DMV will issue a report to Senator Marsden,” said Scott Schloegel of the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) who will be participating in the study. “We're seeing more states taking an interest in what California has allowed for decades. Oregon's governor recently vetoed a bill to allow lane-filtering and not long ago, Montana's legislature passed a bill allowing it.” HB-1236 proposed to allow lane-filtering -- riding between cars -- when traffic is moving at 10 mph or slower and the riders are traveling at 20 mph or less. "We hope the study will show that lane filtering is an accepted safe practice in not only a few states here, but also many countries in the rest of the world," observed John Bilotta, Operations Director for ABATE of Virginia and NCOM Board Member, in reporting on the study at the recent NCOM Convention in Des Moines. STURGIS BIKE WEEK “BUSIEST IN YEARS” After a dip in average attendance during 2020, due primarily to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 81st annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been one of the busiest in recent memory, report officials at the event.

“There are more people here than in the 31 years I’ve been doing this,” Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin told the Rapid City Journal. Sturgis Public Information Officer Christina Steele said officials have heard the rally numbers could reach the 2015 record level of more than 700,000 attendees. Public health officials have been raising Coronavirus-related concerns about the rally since before it started, particularly with the more contagious delta variant spreading across the U.S., but South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R), who rode to the rally, baulked at the analysis, calling ‘super-spreader’ fears “fiction.” IMS NYC CANCELLED DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS 2020 was a strange and stressful year when most motorcycle shows were canceled. But if 2020 was the year of cancellation, 2021 has so far been a year of uncertainty, as this entire year has a caveat that events may be changed and/or canceled at any time. CoViD strikes again, as the Progressive IMS Outdoors New York City stop will not be happening this year, as announced via Instagram and Facebook; “As a result of the state of New York’s recent decision to enforce proof of vaccination and rapid testing for public events of scale, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the New York event.” It then goes on to say that International Motorcycle Show organizers believe that the other events on the 2021 schedule will remain intact, not because of anything to do with the virus but because their other venues have “less restrictive health and safety mandates.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children.” ~ William Thomas Havard (1889-1956), Welsh WWI military chaplain

Remembering the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

20 YEARS LATER

Survivors tell us what they saw and what they’ve learned in the intervening years By Steven Greenhouse, AARP

SEAN ADAIR/REUTERS It’s hard to fathom that teens now entering college — or serving in the armed forces — were not yet born on that unforgettable Tuesday morning. Nearly 3,000 people died in Manhattan, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001, in what remains the deadliest act of terrorism in history. To mark the 20th anniversary of that infamous day, we asked people with a connection to the attacks to reflect on what they experienced then and what it means to them today. Bill Keegan, a lieutenant* in the Port Authority Police Department: The World Trade Center in lower Manhattan was a beacon to the whole world. It said, “We want to know who you are, we want to work with you, and we want to trade with you.” Trade allows us to understand different cultures and different people, and for them to understand us. I think that’s why these terrorists targeted the towers. 8:46 A.M. American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston, bound for Los Angeles, crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower, between the 93rd and 99th floors.

Margaret Lazaros, a systems analyst for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, who worked on the 27th floor of the building: It was unbelievable. It’s even hard to explain. It was such a noise and such an impact that you actually felt it. It felt like the building shuddered. I thought everything was going to fall down. We just all stood there, looking at each other, and I remember I said to my girlfriend, “Something bad happened. I think we need to get out of here.” Vincent Green, a top anti-corruption official in the city’s Department of Investigation, who was in an office that faced the twin towers: We didn’t think it was an attack at that point. We thought it was some pilot who didn’t know what the heck he was doing. 9:03 A.M. United Airlines Flight 175, also headed from Boston to L.A., crashed into the World Trade Center’s South Tower, between the 77th and 85th floors.

there now? Who’s working? We had 72 of our Windows family working that morning. We also had more than 100 people in a private dining room. So, after the second plane hit, I became emotional and felt tears well up in my eyes. Salvatore Cassano, a Fire Department assistant chief of operations who became chief of operations right after September 11: The World Trade Center was built to withstand a plane crash. Well, it withstood the plane crash. It just didn’t withstand a fire from the thousands of gallons of jet fuel that were incinerating everything in there. Systems analyst Lazaros: We got into the stairwell, and it was so quiet. Everybody knew something really bad had happened, and everybody just wanted to get out of there. We all just started walking and walking and walking down. We saw the firefighters, a lot of them. They started coming up the stairwell. So, we all moved over for them. They had so much equipment on them. And it was smoky, and they were sweating already. They were walking up the stairs. We asked them, “Where are you going? Where do you have to go?” They said, “Oh, we have to get underneath the fire. But you go.” They had all these ropes and things, and all those guys never got out of there. Never.

KELLY GUENTHER/THE NEW YORK TIMES/REDUX PICTURES Investigator Green: I saw the second plane come around and go into the building. I told my colleague, “This is no accident. We’re under attack.” Michael Lomonaco, chef and director of culinary operations at Windows on the World, a restaurant on the North Tower’s 106th and 107th floors: I’d been in the shopping center on the lower level when the North Tower was hit. They evacuated us very quickly. I made a couple of calls to let people know I was safe. Then I heard a roar of jet engines. I looked up at the South Tower and saw the moment of impact. A fireball exploded. This was a tremendous shock. I thought of all my friends and colleagues at the restaurant, and I started to do a mental list: Who’s up

We got to the end of the stairwell and went through the open door. At first we had no idea where we were. I said, “This must be some kind of old subbasement, somewhere that’s full of debris.” It was the lobby we had come into in the morning, but everything had been destroyed. 9:37 A.M. American Airlines Flight 77, bound from the Washington area to L.A., crashed into the western side of the Pentagon.

Chef Lomonaco: Suddenly, as I was looking at the twin towers, one of them disappeared in a cloud of smoke. It literally disappeared. There were mothers with strollers; there were elderly people; there were thousands of people who were running north on Church Street, away from this collapse.

of the plane. They simply ran out of time. There were 33 passengers, five flight attendants and two pilots on board, along with the four terrorists. That airplane was only 18 minutes away from Washington. That particular morning, both houses of Congress were to be in session. You had over 4,500 people working in or near the Capitol building. You had congressmen and -women; you had the incredible symbol of democracy; you had employees; you had visitors. So, there’s no doubt that those 40 people saved countless lives. 10:28 A.M. The North Tower collapsed.

He screams, “We’ve got to get out of here. A plane just hit the Pentagon.” It was a lot of chaos. We had people that were on fire. We tackled them and put them out. 9:59 A.M. The South Tower collapsed.

JOSE JIMENEZ/PRIMERA HORA/GETTY IMAGES Robert Snyder, an American studies and journalism professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey: I was walking past South Street Seaport, and I felt a rumble under my feet. Then I looked over my shoulder, and I saw that the second tower had fallen. The scene was absolutely apocalyptic. Systems analyst Lazaros: I could see the North Tower coming down, and I said, “Oh, my God, that’s our place.” It was unbelievable. There were so many people that were still on the upper floors and couldn’t get out. After the towers collapsed, friends and family members began a frantic search for loved ones who worked in or near the complex.

RIDER SAFETY

GROUP RIDING M otorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group – whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally – is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride: Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams below). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should be aware of each rider’s skill level before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride. Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, separated by a few seconds, each with a lead and sweep rider.

Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should a firstaid kit and full tool kit, and all riders should carry a cell phone, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

RIDE IN FORMATION

IF A RIDER LEAVES

22 ThunderRoadsTennessee.com 22 ThunderRoadsTennessee.com SEPTEMBER 2021

Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following using your rear view mirrors. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. If a rider leaves during the ride, the rest of the group should re-form the staggered formation by criss-crossing into the next vacant position. Although it would seem more efficient for the column directly behind the missing rider to move up, we do not recommend it because passing another rider within a lane can be risky.
