DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES

King David came from a Church family, but yet a “dysfunctional family.” In a dysfunctional family the abnormal becomes the normal. David was the “black sheep” of his family, he was everybody’s whipping post. When Samuel the Prophet of God came to visit the home where David lived, David’s father sent David out to the field to watch the sheep, even David’s own father was ashamed of him. The Prophet Samuel came to their house to anoint one of the brothers as king, but as all David’s brothers appeared before Samuel, the Lord said; Look not upon his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the lord looks upon the heart (spiritman). After all the brothers were rejected by Samuel, Samuel asks the father; Are here all thy children? The father gave an answer that was meant to put David down; There remains yet the youngest, and behold he keeps the sheep. The Prophet Samuel said, send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he comes. By not sitting down, this was a tribute only bestowed on a king. When David showed up, the Lord said to Samuel; Arise, anoint him; for this is he! God had His Prophet anoint David king inside his father’s dysfunctional home, in front of all David’s dysfunctional brothers. God has a way of rewarding you in front of all those that have missed treated you. When Goliath appeared and challenged the armies of Israel, the Bible says “All of Israel was so afraid, dismayed, greatly afraid, and fled from Goliath.” David’s brothers were part of the army, so they also were afraid and had run from Goliath. The bible also states; “Goliath would come twice a day and issue the same threat for forty days. David’s father had sent David to the battle field to bring his brothers some food, and it just so happened that Goliath was issuing one of his threats. David heard it and tried to encourage the army of Israel and said; “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine?” This guy doesn’t even have a covenant with God. David’s older brother heard David and was angry with David and tried to embarrass David in front of the army of Israel. Revelation of truth will either bring someone to repentance or will cause them to strike out at the messenger. It’s like you’re running a race and you are way ahead of everybody, then people in the stands start telling you that you’re doing it all wrong, so you stop running to explain to the people in the stands that you’re doing it right or you wouldn’t be in the lead. You may win the argument in the grandstands, but you’ll lose the race on the racetrack! So, stop listing to dysfunctional family members that don’t want you to succeed and run your own race! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.

To be found faithful, Pastor Ron
