ow, 2022 is fast approaching and we can’t wait to see what the New Year holds for us! Over 7 years ago when we published our first issue of Thunder Roads® Tennessee, we didn’t really know what we were getting in to, but we also didn’t have any idea the fun we would have or the friends we would meet, some of whom would become like family over the years. This is our last issue as publishers, we’re passing the torch of publishing TRTN just as Toni and Brian passed it to us. We have had a blast, but we couldn’t have done it alone. Our Graphic Design Artist, Mary Hancock has been incredible and our monthly contributors, Pastor Ron Baptiste, Cooper Chilton, and Bob “Bulldog” Ousley have not only been with us for every issue but they have become friends and mentors and we couldn’t have done any of it without them. To part-time contributor and full time friends, Ron Giddis and his wife Sandy, and to everyone else who has jumped in for a few months or even just one, and to our long time Road Reps Mechele MacDaniel and Bill Hall and all of the others who have helped along the way, thank you! RADNOR LAKE STATE PARK O
K, have you had enough of the holiday season, the ball games, parties, toy runs, and especially relatives? How about enjoying sitting beside a quiet lake, watching a different type of wildlife, or wandering around in nature? Visit Radnor Lake State Park, a hidden gem, located just south of downtown Nashville. Located on narrow Otter Creek Road between Franklin Road and Granny White, Radnor Lake is a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle. Otter Creek Road, where as teenagers, we used to race our hot rods and watch submarine races with our girlfriends, (and escape the security officer), is now blocked off at each end’s entrance to the park. Now, the lake is a protected natural area. Radnor Lake was built in 1914 by the L&N Railroad to provide water via a 6 mile long water pipe to the steam engines and livestock at Radnor Yards. A caretaker would open and close the valve, which can still be seen every day. With the advent of the diesel engine the water was no longer needed. In the 1960’s, to stop a 200 home development of the beautiful area, locals raised funds to purchase the lake. In 1973 it opened as the first State Natural Area. Additional purchases have expanded the park to 1,339 acres of unspoiled land. It has become so popular with hikers and nature lovers that parking of cars
is a real challenge. However, there is adequate reserved motorcycle parking at both ends of the park and still plenty of places for quiet relaxation. This is perfect for a nice stroll through nature. Besides the lake, caretaker’s house, dam, and valve house, a major attraction is the Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education Center. Opened in 2015, this center provides a home for injured and non-releasable birds of prey, with 5 aviaries for captive birds of prey, a flight aviary for eagles, a 550 foot boardwalk, and 50 seat amphitheater for ranger led programs. Swimming, fishing, hunting, and motorized vehicles on the trails are prohibited. Bicycles, jogging, and dog walking are permitted only on Otter Creek Road. However, if you’re still in the holiday spirit, how about a ride to Christmasville or Holladay TN? Christmasville Community was once a prosperous area with shipping on the Obion River, but can only be recognized by an Historic marker and a sign at the volunteer fire department a couple of miles north on US 79 off of US 70A at Trezevant and Holladay is a suburb of Camden on route TN 197. Boswell’s H-D Toy Parade ‘T is the season of toy parades, open houses, parties, family gatherings, and helping the less fortunate. One major annual event is the Boswell’s Toy Parade, held on November 6th. The morning started out really cold, but by the 9am lineup time it was getting warm. Just enough chill in the air to keep Santa comfortable in his suit and get the riders into the Christmas spirit. Speaking of the Santa suit, each year many more riders opt to dress as Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves, reindeer, and even the Grinch. Many of the bikes are also colorfully decorated all in the spirit of the season. Steve Welch and Stacie Ludford were fine stand-ins for Santa and Mrs. Claus to lead the parade. This year over 1,200 bikes met at the Sounds Stadium, paraded down the crowded Nashville Broadway and attended the after party at Scoreboard near Opryland. This broke all records for this event.
Scoreboard provided an all you can eat seafood buffet, including everything from fish and shrimp to crab legs for $25. Live music was provided by Ceron Mays. The police were on hand and sold almost all of the commemorative t-shirts and hoodies available. In addition to those sales, the ride itself raised over $30,000, plus a truckload of toys to provide toys and food for needy Nashville families. These families are nominated by the officers in the area based on their knowledge of the neighborhoods. Support for this event is not limited to the local Boswell’s customers. The MC’s members, independent riders of all makes, HOG clubs, military riders, and even the riders from Music City Indian Motorcycles attended the event. Money was even collected by volunteers from the many folks on Broadway who were enjoying the show.

Boswell’s donated a 2012 Sportster 72 Screamin’ Eagle Stage 4 to be given away to one lucky participant. I really was afraid that the lucky winner, Claudia Rourk, was going to pass out as she was waiting for the final number to be called. She was one lucky and happy lady. This was a great event and we appreciate all that the dealers, clubs, and organizations do to promote joy all year long. Many thanks to Boswell’s H-D, Gary Bagwell, Dan Pesce and his many volunteers, Boswell’s HOG Clubs, Von Elrod’s Beer Hall and Kitchen for opening its doors to the participants for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s, Scoreboard, Metro Police, and all of the participants for making this event a great success! And to my sweet wife, Judy, for loaning me her bike for the race to Broadway and Scoreboard for photos when my battery died at the starting line. SEMI-AUTO PISTOL MAINTENANCE
H
appy December bikers! I hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving and I hope you have had some opportunities to get some riding in this fall.
After years of being a range safety officer (RSO), it has always amazed me to see how little care and maintenance the average shooter puts into their pistols – a tool they may need to use to protect themselves, their family or their friends. When someone on the range was having difficulties with failures to eject – or failures to chamber - I could generally run a snake through the barrel, and lube things up a bit, and their problems would often go away. But that type of maintenance is little more than a Band-Aid. While I may be a bit obsessive about cleaning and lubricating my pistols, I know I can count on them to go “BANG!” every time I pull the trigger. I clean and lubricate my pistols after every range session. Others do it every three or four times they go to the range. There may be a happy medium somewhere in between. Before I leave the range, I will disassemble my pistol and run a cleaning snake through the barrel. This helps remove excess carbon and powder – potentially making the gun more reliable when driving back to my shop. Once back in my shop, I remove the magazine and cycle the slide twice to verify there is not a cartridge loaded in the pipe – DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS – not once, but twice. There have been many accidental discharges because this step was not followed – with far too many deaths and injuries to count. Next, I completely disassemble the pistol and thoroughly clean the slide, the external parts of the barrel, the frame, the recoil spring and guide rod. If I have shot the pistol a lot, I will disassemble the magazines and thoroughly clean all the parts – with special attention given to the follower – which pushes the cartridge up into the slide – which in turn chambers the cartridge in the barrel as the pistol goes into battery. Once all parts are clean, I
move to the barrel. I prefer the Otis cleaning kit, as the cleaning cloths and wire brushes are pulled through in the same direction the bullet travels the barrel. I alternate between a cleaning cloth lightly dipped in Hoppe’s 9 solvent and the wire cleaning brush. I continue to alternate between the two until the cloth comes out clean. At this point, many shooters reassemble the pistol, load it up and are done. I do a bit more to make my pistol more reliable and protect its moving parts. I use Brian Eno’s Slide Glide Lite, in colder weather, or Shooter’s Choice slide grease, when warmer, to lubricate the parts of the frame where the slide moves during firing cycles. Without proper lubrication, your slide/frame will wear. Remember - a little grease goes a long way – applying too much will make a mess of things when the pistol cycles. Don’t forget that there are spots on the top of the frame where the slide makes contact. Apply a little slide lubricant there too. Next, I apply a very light amount of Hoppe’s gun oil to the ramp in the frame and the ramp on the bottom of the barrel. Lastly, I will run a cleaning patch through the barrel, with a very small amount of oil on it. This will protect the barrel. Reassemble your pistol, and cycle the slide several times to make sure there is no binding. Taking proper care of your pistol will protect your investment and will allow it to operate trouble free when you need it most. One final thought: make sure you have shot plenty of your personal protection ammo through your pistol at the range, before you rely on that brand in the real world. FIX YOUR HEART 1 Sam. 24:3-6 King Saul is hunting David and his men, unknown to Saul, David and his men are hiding in the same cave that Saul decides to take a nap in. While Saul is asleep, David has the chance and the right to kill Saul. David’s men encourage David to kill Saul but David won’t, instead he cuts off a piece of Saul’s robe just to prove that he could have killed him. Vs.5 “And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he cut Saul’s robe.” David knew not to not to harm God’s anointed (Saul). PS. 105:15 “Touch not my anointed and do my Prophets no harm.” There has always been a “religious spirit” that wants to harm God’s ministers just as it was with Moses; Ex.17: 2 “wherefore the people did chide (strife)with Moses. Vs.4 Moses cried unto the Lord saying, what shall I do unto this people, they be almost ready to stone me.” This is a spiritual law that can work for you or against you, just like the natural law of gravity. David could have killed Saul and then David would be king, his men could stop running, go home and have great jobs with David as king. But David didn’t want to be king by his own hand but by the hand of God. PS.57:1-11 David writes about his experience with Saul in this cave, but in vs.7 David makes a profound statement; “My heart is fixed, oh God, my heart is fixed.” The Hebrew word for “fixed” is “kuwn” meaning to establish, to be prepared, immoveable. David’s heart was “fixed” on doing the right thing, way before he ever entered the cave. Was your heart fixed before you entered into this “pandemic cave, the economical cave, the stress, anxiety and fear cave?” If your heart is not fixed before you enter into this cave, you’ll fail under the load every time. One thing I have learned through all my cave experiences; “you can never really know God until you’ve known Him in the middle of a fight. Until He has brought you out of your cave experiences.” Today the pandemic has taken a toll on all the churches and will last longer than we thought; statistics show that 28000 churches have closed to date, 41% of the population have stopped engaging together, 36% feel disconnected from church
life, 25%are less active in the community, 24% decline of young adults in church, and 18% less giving to the Church. 2 Thess.2:3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a great falling away first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.” Now is not the time to quit on God! Will we only serve Him on the mountain top when things are good, or will we serve Him in the valley when things are tough? Job 13:15 “Though He may slay me, yet will I trust in Him: but I will maintain mine own ways before Him.” The best thing we can do, is to “fix your heart!” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots:
L
et me first catch up on some belated wishes for you. A big thank you to my fellow veterans and their families for your service to our nation and for protecting our blessed United States Constitution. On Veterans Day this year I spoke to an elementary school at their veteran’s day program. I usually talk to adult audiences at various veteran events and talking to a group of children from grade K thru 8 was a challenge. Luckily the school system in my county is doing a pretty good job of holding the line against transgender indoctrination, critical race theory and all of the ridiculous pronoun crap. Keeping teachers and staff grounded in traditional America has done well at putting the brakes on becoming the Marxist indoctrination centers we see in other parts of the country. The point of my speech was that everyone who joins the military takes an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. They don’t take an oath to protect politicians, our country, you or me or our families. Think about that for a moment. When we see veterans, we normally thank them for protecting us and our country but that isn’t what they took an oath to do. However, by doing what is necessary to defend the constitution they actually do protect us and our nation because the constitution and bill of rights is the foundation of our freedoms. If we preserve our constitution and our politicians are forced to adhere to it and not violate it and our justice system supports the constitution as written we stand a chance of preserving our personal rights. Our military stands ready to lay down their lives to protect us through our constitution. I want to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is when we should all thank God for the blessings we enjoy and celebrate it with family and friends. It is the time when we recognize the bounty that results from hard work that historically comes after the crops are brought in. Today not many people are farmers but we still celebrate by laying out a big spread of food, bonding with family and friends and being thankful for what we have. Most of us have had a thin Thanksgiving at some point in our lives but were still able to thank God for what we had and the prospect for prosperity in the future. Man was made to work and when intelligently applied that leads to prosperity and a bounty worth celebrating. If this year was a thin bounty for you then it’s time to get to work and make sure next year is better. This year I am thankful that some of America is waking up to the Marxist march to overthrow our constitution and our way of life. We finally saw some signs of it on election day in November. I pray that builds steam as we go through 2022 and we can put the evil of Marxism back in its box and stop the division and destruction it is spreading. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas to all. Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ and the holidays are for restoration of faith. The Marxists are doing what they can to separate us from our religion but by celebrating the holidays we can push back against that and renew our souls and our faith for salvation and a positive future. We have trying times coming with money and inflation challenges. Faith may be
the one thing that ties us all together and keeps us focused on fighting oppression and not each other. The administration is doing all they can to drive up prices and trash our economy in order to force us all to become slaves to government. Mandates force us to choose between personal freedom and bending down to tyranny. We are all feeling the pressure and what they are doing will build the strain on all of us until we stop their march. We need to bond together in the spirit of the holidays to help our neighbors, family and friends get through the tough times that are certainly growing. Empty store shelves and high costs may actually be a blessing. We all tend to overdue gift giving at Christmas. Kids can only play with so many toys and this year they benefit more from our preparing for super inflation by paying off debt and increasing savings. Teach a child how to grow something they can eat. It’s a skill that may become more important going forward and focus on letting them know you will stand against evil to protect them. We all need to stand against the lies and evil that see growing at alarming rates. Lastly let me wish you a Happy New Year!! I know that it feels like that wish may be overwhelmed by what is going on in the world but happiness can be found in the new year. Happiness is where you find it and so we all must look for things that make us happy and contribute to a happy world. However, don’t let my wish for happiness slow you from shooting an MS-13 gangster in the face if he threatens your safety. The border is open and the dregs of the world are invading under the cover of people in poverty who have been enticed to enter our country illegally. Most illegal aliens are just cover to keep law enforcement occupied so the cartels can run drugs and terrorists and gangs can get in to reap destruction and take advantage of us. By standing strong, remaining vigilant, preparing for the worst and hoping for the best we give ourselves the best chance to survive and overcome. Joy to you but stay in the fight!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. CONGRESS APPROVES FEDERAL HIGHWAY BILL Following extension after extension, deferring action for more than a year, the so-called infrastructure bill, or highway bill to reauthorize highway funding projects, passed on November 12, 2021 after the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to the Senate’s version and passed a 5-year, $1.2 trillion highway funding bill, dubbed the INVEST ACT. Unfortunately for bikers who have lobbied Congress extensively on various transportation issues contained in the House measure, after all this time there’s scant little to celebrate. The Senate version does include reestablishment of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) to advise the U.S. Department of Transportation on motorcycle matters, and allocates increased Section 405 grant funds dedicated for motorcycle safety. But left out of the new law are hard-fought issues such as anti-biker profiling by law enforcement, expanding prohibitions on motorcycleonly checkpoints, and autonomous vehicle operation oversight. BUILD BACK BATTERY Now that President Biden’s scaled back $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill is law, Democrats are setting their sights on his Build Back Better Act, furthering the administration’s electric vehicle agenda, including tax incentives of up to $12,500 per vehicle to spur consumer demand for EVs and establishing a network of 500,000 EV chargers nationwide by 2030. Transportation officials are touting the Build Back Better as a key part of Biden’s plan along with the new infrastructure package to help achieve the president’s EV sales goal of having half of all new vehicles sold by 2030 to be electric. On November 19, after months of negotiations including hijacking the infrastructure bill until this “human infrastructure” measure could be acted upon, House Democrats passed the Build Back Better with no Republican support. Included in $495 billion worth of climate initiatives, there’s proposed refundable electric vehicle tax credits, not just for new cars, but up to $4,000 for used electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, and also includes incentives for buying electric motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles which would be eligible for up to $7,500 or half the vehicle’s price. The $1.75 trillion Build Back Better bill will now go to the Senate, where it faces stiff opposition from Republicans and is likely to be revised in the coming weeks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he aims to have the chamber pass the bill before Christmas. The House will need to vote on it again if the bill is altered. MOTORCYCLING IS LESS DANGEROUS THAN HORSE RIDING AND SKIING It turns out that horse riding and skiing are more likely to land you in the hospital needing medical treatment than getting out on your motorcycle, according to a new study that reveals motorcycling actually isn’t as dangerous as other less regulated pastimes. A study on a decade’s worth of data from the U.S. National Trauma Data Bank has grouped the reasons as to why Americans have landed in the hospital to be treated for injuries. It found that
motorcycling isn’t as dangerous statistically as other activities that don’t require so much training. Motorcycling injuries accounted for 0.14 out of 1000 hours of riding. By contrast, horse riding has 0.49 injuries during that timeframe, with 37% of those requiring care for trauma to the thoracic region (chest and upper back area) and a fifth suffering a head injury. A quarter of those would go on to require intensive care, plus one in ten needing surgery. Perhaps insurers should keep those actuarial numbers in mind before so readily hitting the ‘+’ on those premiums! NEW HEADS-UP HELMET DISPLAY TECH HAS ALMOST LIMITLESS POTENTIAL Swiss firm Aegis Rider AG is using augmented reality to create a helmet that seamlessly integrates information into the view ahead. It’s an idea with virtually limitless potential, from providing real-time hazard warnings by highlighting threats as they emerge, to coaching the rider with suggested speeds and cornering lines, or presenting safety instructions superimposed on the road itself. Already undergoing tests as a third-generation prototype, the system features on-bike cameras and a central computing unit allied to sensors monitoring speed and lean angle as well as GPS data to locate the bike. This gets cross-referenced with detailed maps that include info about speed limits and road characteristics. Although it would be possible to display such warnings on a traditional dashboard, there’s a risk that this would take the rider’s eye off the road, so the system is integrated with an augmented reality helmet with heads-up display in the visor. The system also monitors the helmet’s precise position and orientation in relation to the bike, so the warnings can be superimposed at just the right spot. Aegis Rider is supported by ETH Zurich university where company founder Simon Hecker was awarded his PhD for research on autonomous driving systems. He said: "I ride a motorcycle myself, so I’m aware of the large gap between the safety systems of modern cars and motorcycles.” Initially, Aegis Rider want to have a version targeting tech-savvy earlyadopters in production by next summer, with later developments leading to more affordable, mainstream versions in the future. "The pace of this industry is so fast that there are many more opportunities down the road, even to the point where computer element could be in the cloud, transmitting directly to the helmet using 5G." SMART MOTORWAY U-TURN After investing £6 billion ($8 billion USD) into the smart motorway project since its inception, British Transport Secretary Grant Schapps is reportedly having second thoughts following a report by a national UK newspaper. The report, compiled by the Mail, raises questions specifically around All Lane Running (ALR) roads, meaning the removal of the hard shoulder to create an extra lane of travel. After reading it, Sec. Schapps is said to have claimed he is not totally against ceasing further construction of the roads. It is also reported that a former senior transport official claimed that the roads had not improved journey times and that quite the opposite, they could be hurting the economy.

You’d expect the government’s math and economic foresight to be sound, but DfT scientist David Metz has been quoted as saying that ‘biased’ economic modeling was used and that much of the motorway network will have a negative benefit economically; “If better economic modeling and analysis had been done, we wouldn’t have been investing so much money in these roads… So to a degree, this money has been wasted.” He went on to say, “Consultants like to please their clients so there’s a bias to provide the kind of outcomes expected.” Furthermore, it seems that the most pressing matter within the report that is causing Schapps to have a rethink is not road user safety, it is in fact the economic impact of building more roads. This flies in the face of a Commons transport committee report calling for an emergency overhaul of ALR roads. BIKE MODIFICATIONS THAT EFFECT EMISSIONS ‘LIKELY TO BE OUTLAWED’ IN U.K The Department for Transport (DfT) in the United Kingdom has clarified its position on the anti-tampering proposals it revealed recently in a meeting with the National Motorcyclists Council (NMC). The wording of the original document made it seem that any modification from a motorbike’s OEM parts would become illegal, sparking uproar in the biking community. And while the DfT has now made it clear that this is not the case for all parts of your bike, exhaust systems remain firmly in the crosshairs. The proposals are aimed at ensuring the motorcycles can no longer be legally modified to generate more pollution, which would rule out many performance exhaust systems and power commanders. The proposals have also been designed to stamp out the practice of modifying electric bicycles and e-scooters to make them faster and more powerful. "Although we are pleased to learn that riders will not be banned from modifying their bikes if this does not reduce environmental performance or increase speeds beyond a particular motorcycle’s design specification, this leaves several areas where legitimate reasons to modify could still be denied," said Craig Carey-Clinch from the NMC. "There is also a large question mark about how the proposals will affect older motorcycles. "Engine modifications often improve how a bike runs and the freedom to be able to make these changes must remain. But it does seem
clear that in the drive to reduce vehicle emissions and to decarbonize all vehicle types, modifications that lead to increased emissions from petrol motorcycles and cars are likely to be outlawed." ‘DUTCH REACH’ IS THE LAW IN THE NEW BRITISH HIGHWAY CODE The new rule in the Highway Code is aimed at protecting cyclists, those on motorcycles and vulnerable road users, when drivers are getting out of cars. If someone was to say ‘don’t forget to use the Dutch Reach’ what would you immediately think of? AMRoadsmart surveyed 10,000 motorists, and found that 85% of those asked had no idea what a Dutch Reach was, instead perhaps wondering why they were being offered something so lewd. Under new rules in the updated Highway Code, the Dutch Reach is primarily a method aimed at protecting cyclists by simply using your furthest hand to open the car door as you exit your car, naturally making your body turn towards the door and increase your chances of spotting an approaching person/motorcycle/cycle. Despite being termed as an aide to cyclists, this newly introduced law will also benefit motorcyclists and scooterists who are filtering past - and now recognized as vulnerable road users in the newly updated rules. Implemented under Rule 239 of the ‘Waiting and Parking’ chapter, the new rule will read: “You should open the door using your hand on the opposite side to the door you are opening, e.g. use your left hand to open a door on your right-hand side. “This will make you turn your head to look over your shoulder. You are then more likely to avoid causing injury to cyclists or motorcyclists passing you on the road, or to people on the pavement.” The new “Dutch Reach” rule will be taught to new learners. Plus, it makes a lot of sense and could become a natural, helpful habit. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. While her hubby was at work she set about getting everything set up to paint the entire interior of the home. Her hubby arrives home at 5:30 and smells the paint throughout their home and walks into the living room to find his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat....he also notices she’s wearing a heavy parka and her leather jacket, at the same time. He asks what’s up and she tells him she wanted to prove all those jokes wrong. He says he totally gets that, but why is she on the floor sweating so much and her parka over her leather jacket on? e finally found another great place for you to eat the next time you visit our area here in Sevier County, TN. Junction 35 Spirits is the first distillery in this location to also offer a kitchen and bar at the same
address. Junction 35 Spirits is bringing a long-time family tradition to the public with recipes straight from the hills of the Smoky Mountains. All of the food coming out of the kitchen is cooked to order. Starting with the appetizers, Tennessee Poutine is one of my favorites so far. It is rosemary fries, topped with Poutine Gravy and Wisconsin fried cheese curds. For the smoked wings, there is a large variety of sauces. The one I just had to try was the Blackberry Moonshine sauce, it was delicious. Their Angus burgers are a blend of chuck and brisket. The one that caught my eye comes with a house made pimento cheese, bacon jam, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. There is also a great variety of entree’s and Artisan Pasta’s. If you are eating light, they also offer some salads. To finish the meal, how about some made from scratch desserts; Almond Cheesecake, S’mores Chocolate Cake and Bourbon Balls. Everything is made to deliver great taste even to the most discerning palates. But don’t take my word for it, the next time you’re in our area, stop in and try it for yourself.
