new month is with us; the month of the flowers, the fifth month of the year and also, the month in which huge and important celebrations take place! Welcome May! There are so many events happening around our great state that you won’t have a problem finding something to do, and we will be at as many as we can get to, so if you see us out be sure to come up and say “hello”! We are also excited about traveling to Reno Nevada this month to the 32nd annual NCOM, National Coalition of Motorcyclist, Convention and we are so proud to be receiving the Silver Spoke Award for Media. NCOM is comprised of numerous motorcycle rights groups, clubs, and associations, all working together for the greater good of the biker community. Today, the coalition has expanded to include hundreds of thousands of riders and more than 2,000 member organizations from all over the United States. For our magazine to be receiving national recognition from NCOM is humbling to say the least and we are honored, it makes us want to work even harder to continue representing motorcycling and the good people who ride in positive ways. If you’re looking for something special to do Memorial Day weekend you should consider attending the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride in Sevierville, TN on the 28th. If you’ve never attended this event you don’t know what you’re missing, it is amazing! Thousands of bikes gather at the Courthouse in downtown Sevierville for the opening ceremony at 10am. This year they are commemorating all the women who served in our military and paid the ultimate price, the ceremony consists of Patriotic singing, guest speakers, placing a wreath at the Veteran’s Monument and Taps marks the beginning of the event. The police escorted 65 mile ride leaves, rain or shine, at 11am. There are NO FEES for this ride! Once all of the motorcycles have arrived at Veteran’s Overlook on top of Clinch Mountain, the closing ceremony begins. Patriotic music, placing of the wreath, 21 Gun Salute followed by Taps concludes the event. Come early and have coffee and breakfast at Court House Donuts. For anyone who can’t make it to Sevierville, Colboch H-D will be opening at 11am and will pick up the ride at 12pm. After the closing ceremony, all riders are invited back to their store for free BBQ. This is one of the greatest tributes to our Fallen Military, so come join us to remember those who paid the Ultimate Price for our Freedom! We would like to congratulate Scott Powers on winning our first Photo Contest!! Check out the centerfold pic to see his amazing photo and if you have a photo that you think would make a cool cover or centerfold, please go to our website and enter our photo contest. To all the biker Mamas out there, have a Happy Mother’s Day! Have a FUN and SAFE Memorial Day weekend and let’s remember what Memorial Day is really about, our Fallen Troops who paid the ultimate price! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

“THE APPOINTING & THE ANOINTING” Matt. 22: 14 “Many are called, but few are chosen.” There is an underlying problem in today’s ministries; traditional, denominational, and non-denominational, but more so in Motorcycle Ministries. In the last ten years there has been an overwhelming serge in Motorcycle Ministries (M/M), Christian Motorcycle Clubs (M/C), and biker churches. Along with growth, comes growing pains. I have seen too many Christian M/Ms, M/ Cs and biker churches fail due to lack of discipleship. I blame some of this on the traditional, denominational churches that refuse to embrace this new movement. They complain about losing membership but won’t embrace the biker culture. 1 Sam. 16:10-13 “Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint one of his son’s king of Israel. After Samuel anointed the youngest boy David, they sent David back to the field to watch the sheep. Even though David had been “Anointed” to be king, he wasn’t ready to assume that position, there were many life experiences for David to go through before being king of Israel. David grew up to be a passionate man. You must be very careful with passionate people, they will cry with you, laugh with you and kill you at the same time. David learned to be a passionate lover and a passionate killer. Passion caused David to run at the giant with no more than a rag & a rock killing the giant. David also killed 100 Philistines and cut off their foreskins. David shed so much blood that God wouldn’t let him build the Temple, but yet, “David was a man after God’s own heart.” 2 Sam. 5:17-25 “When the Philistines heard they had anointed David king over Israel. All the Philistines came to seek David,” The Philistines knew David could fight as a solider, but will he fight as king? Some of us will fight when we got nothing to lose, but will we fight when we got everything to lose? David was Anointed king as a boy, but it wasn’t until he was years older that his “Anointing” caught up with his “Appointing.”

May 2017

There are many people that God has “called” into the ministry, but “few have been chosen.” Just because you may feel like God has called you into the ministry doesn’t mean He has sent you yet. It takes time, education and mentoring from another experienced person of God to prepare you for active service. After “all the Philistines came up to seek David,” (to call him out) “David inquired of the Lord, asking, shall I go up?” David doesn’t fall back on his past victories, his strengths, or his habits, he falls to his knees and ask God for direction, “Shall I go up?” After defeating his enemy, they come back again to try him, again David ask God for direction, “Shall I go up?” This time God tells him to wait. Sometimes we do things without asking God for directions because it worked for us the last time. It’s like God’s own G.P.S. If we get lost in a big city, down in the hood, we need clear directions on how to get out. We don’t need a G.P.S. telling us how wonderful we are. We don’t need an emotional uplift. We need help to get out of the situation we got ourselves into. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

RIDER SAFETY

I

It’s springtime in Tennessee

t’s springtime in Tennessee. Along with flowers blooming, trees growing new leaves and the birds singing, motorcycles are coming out of their winter hibernations and their riders are anxious to be out of the winter cages. Announcements of “bike nights” and other events provide ample opportunities for bikers to catch-up with each other. We all enjoy meeting up with the friends we haven’t seen for a while and enjoying great food and conversation. To often, we also enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages. So, before you’re tempted to drink a few beers and get back on your bike, let’s take a look at some statistics. While all the data still has not been tallied for 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2015, 27% of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes had a BAC or blood alcohol concentration of .08%. Sadly, a total of 1,365 alcohol impaired motorcycle drivers became a fatality statistic. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security reports a total of 123 motorcycle fatalities in 2015 directly resulting from the consumption of alcohol. A rider cannot effectively manage the risks that come with riding a motorcycle

if he or she is impaired. Alcohol enters the blood quickly. Your judgment and vision will be the first of your abilities to suffer. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation warns that “a person is impaired before reaching the legal limit” and “it is vital to separate drinking from riding.” You are legally impaired at a BAC of .08% or higher. There are three factors that determine your BAC. These include your body weight, how fast you consume alcohol and the amount you consume. A standard drink contains 1.5 ounces of distilled liquor. This is a 12-ounce beer, a mixed drink with 1.5 ounces of liquor or a 5-ounce glass of wine. Now you might be thinking that you are fine to have a beer and get back on your bike. But, take into consideration that for the average adult male, it takes about one hour for the body to rid itself of the alcohol contained in that beer. And, for women, this process is slower at about ¾ of that rate; you will need to wait about an hour and 15 minutes. The effects on judgment and vision will begin with your very first drink. It’s important to recognize that consuming alcohol will affect your ability to ride safety. Before letting an impaired passenger on the back of your bike, consider the additional risk imposed to your safety by an intoxicated passenger. As recommended by the MSF, separate drinking from riding. If you have enjoyed a few alcoholic beverages, remember to “hang out” for about an hour for every beverage consumed or find an alternate mode of transportation. Don’t take the risk of an alcohol related accident keeping your from riding or being included in 2017 fatality statistic. Safe riding starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Bullet Points

PRINCIPLES OF SELF DEFENSE – PROPORTIONALITY Greetings friends! Spring is finally upon us. Over the past weekend, I was able to ride 200 miles – most of which was without a jacket. After the cold months of January and February, and the unpredictable weather of this past March, it was a relief to not have to bundle up in heavy clothing. Over the past several issues we have explored the principles of an effective self-defense claim. Last month’s column was on Imminence. This month’s column deals with Proportionality – the third component of a successful defense of your use of deadly force. In review, here are the five components which must all be answered affirmatively for you to prove you acted in self-defense: 1. Innocence 2. Imminence 3. Proportionality 4. Avoidance 5. Reasonableness From a law enforcement and legal perspective pulling a gun during a fist fight would be not be considered a proportional response. Doing so would fail the third component and would certainly put you at risk of being charged and spending time in prison. But before I get ahead of myself, let’s take a look at weapons that are always considered deadly: • Guns • Bows • Crossbows That is the entire list. So, would it be correct to assume only these projectile weapons are considered deadly? No. Common items can be used as a contact weapon and be deadly: baseball bats, hammers, clubs, walking canes, bowling balls, bricks, tire irons, etc. Even one’s fists can be used to deadly effect if the attacker is much larger, he’s choking you or you are no longer able to defend yourself. But the use of any of these other weapons would have to clear the AOJ Triad hurdle in order to be considered deadly-force: 1. Ability – The attacker has the ability to cause death or grave bodily harm 2. Opportunity – The attacker can get to you with the force to cause death or grave bodily harm 3. Jeopardy – The attacker intends to do grave harm to you As an example, if you were having an argument at a softball game with the batter and he poked you in the chest with his bat, he would have ability and opportunity. But unless he intended to attack you violently with it (jeopardy), you could not immediately resort to using deadly force. Your self-defense claim would fail the third leg of the triad. Now, if you were approached in an alley by a thug carrying the same bat, and he gets in your face saying he’s going to kill you, the shitbag has ability, opportunity and there is jeopardy. In this scenario, your use of deadly force would be considered justified. But only if you are innocent. You cannot be the person who started the altercation, you have to be a place you are legally allowed to be and the threat to your life has to be imminent.

May 2017

The last thing which must be considered is escalation of force. If you are arguing with someone and they throw the first punch, you have the right to defend yourself with non-lethal force. Your fists would be the most logical response. But if you are overpowered and the attacker is on top of you, pounding you in the face, this would represent a deadly threat or an attack which could cause grave bodily harm – the amount of force has escalated and you have the right to protect yourself with escalated force. But again, you must be the innocent party. My son-in-law is a sheriff’s deputy in Florida. He carries roughly 25 pounds of gear on his belt when he is working. His defensive tools include pepper spray, a TASER and his service pistol. Law enforcement officers are trained to use what’s called the “continuum of force.” This would involve going up-and-down the ladder of lethality of their tools. Their first tool is their yelling, “Stop!” This is obviously everyone’s first tool. Next would be pepper spray, then their TASER and lastly their service pistol. Obviously, if they are experiencing an imminent threat from a gun wielding robber, they are not going to start by pulling out their pepper spray. But if during a routine traffic stop, the person becomes belligerent, they may well go to the pepper spray and escalate force only as necessary. This is a useful illustration because many civilians often carry only their fists and their firearm. And while some of you may carry a knife, as I do, don’t fall into the potential legal trap of thinking it is considered less lethal than your pistol. If you are in close combat with a thug, pulling your knife is the same a pulling a gun and can certainly be considered an escalation of force. Remember, from the law’s perspective, it is just a deadly as your gun. So, what other non-lethal weapons should you consider carrying? Pepper spray is the most obvious. It is quite effective and will give you time to separate yourself from the bad guy and call 911. But pulling pepper spray may also be considered escalation of force if the threat is not imminent. Case law in many states has shown that juries will convict a criminal of aggravated assault if they use pepper spray in the commission of a crime. So, remember, you must always be the innocent party before you do so. Another tool which you might consider is a key chain mounted kubotan. A kubotan is essentially a mini-club and is quite effective at taking the fight out of an attacker if used correctly. But training and speed are essential with such a tool. And again, you will still need to be the innocent party in order to justify your use of a kubotan. In summary, you cannot use force that is not proportional to the force an attacker is using against you. During a fight, your attacker may escalate their force against you, and you may escalate proportionally to their force. Until next month, ride often and be safe out there. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: I am not a lawyer and nothing in this column represents legal advice. My article is based on common sense and many years of studying self-defense.

WILL RIDE TO EAT

By Scott High

THE BULL AND THISTLE

If you are riding a motorcycle, one of the things that make a great destination restaurant is the trip. The small historic town of Gainsboro Tennessee is in the Upper Cumberland about halfway between Red Boiling Springs and Cookeville north of Baxter and if you look at a map it’s not hard to find a great motorcycle road to get there from any direction. Once you get to Gainsboro, on the east side of the square across the street from the Courthouse you will find The Bull and Thistle Pub. The Bull and Thistle has quickly become a favorite destination for bikers since it opened a few short years ago and it’s not unusual to make the turn onto the square and see the street lined with bikes. The owners Loui, Silvestri and Diana Mandli, fell in love with Gainsboro and bought a 100 year old building that had been a dry goods store, a hardware store, a dollar store, and a furniture store, then they had to decide what to do with it. The people of the area and their strong sense of community and love of music, and food made the idea of an Irish Pub an easy one. In Ireland, Scotland and England a pub is a place to gather with friends, listen to music, and generally eat drink and be merry. The historic building was not in great shape but during the 2 year long renovation they discovered the original decorative tin ceilings, hardwood floors, and brick walls so all they had to do was uncover the original beauty of the old building. It was a major undertaking but the results were worth the effort. They also had a local craftsman build the huge bar, back bar, and most of the dining tables from the wood of one single red oak tree. In the back of the pub there is a stage for live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and there is also a room that can be reserved for very large groups. The main room is divided by a half wall into a pub side and a dining side but you can order from the full menu on either side. The back bar has an impressive selection of spirits on display and there are 20 beers on tap and another

14

50 or so available in bottles and the selection changes often. Guinness and local favorite Calfkiller are always available and they also have several nice wines. Besides the ride to get there, the best thing about The Bull and Thistle is the food. They originally brought a chef from Cork Ireland but now Chef Ben Mandli is in charge of the kitchen and the Celtic food is authentic and delicious. The lunch menu offers sliders, sandwiches and Celtic entrees and the dinner menu features Celtic, British, European, and Southern Entrees, and seafood and steaks. Pub food, appetizers, soups and salads, and small dish entrees are always available. I’m a fan of UK pub food and the Fish and Chips and Bangers and Mash are really good. On our last trip there I had Grassfed Angus Beef Sliders from the lunch menu which were delicious and I left with a full belly. Once you are finished eating, have a drink and enjoy the Pub atmosphere or go out and walk around the square, or do like we do, go sit on the wall around the courthouse and get out the map and find a great ride home. You can find Bull and Thistle at 102 S Main St, Gainesboro, TN and to view their full menu, go to www.bullandthistle.com If you are out riding to eat and see us, please come up and tell us your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. Will Ride to Eat is an ongoing article in Thunder Roads® Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history of and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

HISTORY

HISTORIC FEMALE RIDERS PART IV

The following is the fourth and final piece in a fourpart series showcasing 12 female riders with historic significance. In Parts I, II and III we introduced you to the duos of Effie & Avis Hotchkiss and Adeline & Augusta van Buren as well as the first female to win an AMA event Dorothy “Dot” Robinson, Iron Horse Motorcycle Club Founder Bessie Stringfield, Motor Maids Founder Linda Dugeau, the First Lady of Sturgis Pearl Hoel, First Original Stunt Rider Terry Strong and First Female Member of the 200 Mph Club Marcia Holley.

Laura piloted it to an AMA World Land Speed Record. In the two years that followed, the Klock daughters also competed and set land speed records, making them the only mother-daughter trio to hold land speed records at Bonneville. It’s not all about racing and motorcycles with Laura either. She formed the Helping With Horsepower charity which uses motorcycles as a way to raise money to support worthy causes. Custom builder, speed racer, mother and philanthropist…what more do you need to know about Laura Klock? Leslie Porterfield

Facts: Guinness Book of World Record’s “Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle”

Laura Klock Facts: Sturgis Hall of Fame Member, Custom Bike Builder and Land Speed Record Holder Laura Klock grew up in Wisconsin, where she was around motorcycles and things with engines all the time. Her family rode bikes, snowmobiles, ATVs and her father spent many nights working on cars. As a result, Laura and her brothers became tinkerers by default. Motorcycles helped to form this young woman’s identity throughout her life and led her to be inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame in 2012. She met a like-minded motorcycle enthusiast named Brian Klock and later made him her husband. Together they formed Klock Werks, an aftermarket parts company that also builds custom bikes and aftermarket parts. They became a household name within the industry after they entered their Bagger in a Discovery Channel Biker Build Off and had a great showing. Following the momentum of the exposure from Discovery Channel, the family took that same tricked-out Harley to Bonneville in 2006 and 16

There are a lot of women out there who can claim to be the fastest woman on a motorcycle, but if you look in the record books, it is Leslie Porterfield who claimed that crown in 2008. Her record breaking run of 232-mph not only surpassed the previous record held by Marcia Holley, but also established her as the first female racer in the Bonneville 200-mph club. Going 200 mph on salt is not as easy as going 200 mph on asphalt. She was awarded the 2008 AMA Racing Female Rider of the Year as well. In 2009 she won the Top Speed of the Meet award at the 2009 International Speed Trials by BUB with a 240-mph run. Despite all the awards and accolades Porterfield has to her credit she still wants more. These days you can find Leslie at Bonneville trying to break through the next barrier: To become the first woman into the 300-mph club on a motorcycle. Source: J&P Cycles

“Y

ALCATRAZ

ou are entitled to food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention. Anything else you get is a privilege.” Number 5, Alcatraz Prison Rules and Regulations, 1934. “Break the rules, go to prison. Break the prison rules, go to Alcatraz.” Anonymous Although not “beautiful” in the sense of the prior articles in this series, this national park is definitely historic and full of colorful stories. This 22 acre island was home to the baddest of the bad, the likes of Al ”Scarface” Capone, Doc Barker, and George “Machine Gun” Kelley and considered escape-proof. There were 14 escape attempts. In 1962, Frank Morris, with brothers John and Clarence Anglin, slipped into the water, using a makeshift raft made of raincoats, and were never found, but presumed drowned. All other attempted escapees were caught or killed. “The Rock” began its active life when construction of a fort was begun in 1853. Almost immediately, the fort was used to house prisoners, as in 1859, 11 soldiers, scheduled for confinement, arrived with the first permanent garrison. During the Civil War, military convicts and captured crew of a Confederate ship were incarcerated here. Captured Native Americans were also held here during the Indian wars. In 1907, it was decommissioned as a fort and as a U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, portions were demolished and a huge concrete cellblock was constructed. From 1934 to 1963, it served as a maximum security prison for a total of 1576 prisoners. Today, as a part of the National Park system, visitors can get an idea of the sheer helplessness the 18

prisoners must have felt. The most dreaded portion of the prison was the isolation of D Block “The Hole” used for discipline. At its worst, a prisoner could be help for up to 19 days in total darkness (it was TOTAL darkness and I was ready to get out in a matter of minutes). Prisoners would rip buttons from their clothes and scatter them on the floor, as searching for them gave them something to do. The most disastrous escape attempt occurred on May 24 1946, when Bernie Cox spread the bars to the gun room, freed his 4 conspirators and planned to race to shore. They took too many guards hostage, with one guard hiding the exit key, and, therefore, they were trapped in a sally port. After 3 days and the ensuing Marine shelling and with grenades dropped through the ceiling, the ordeal ended, with two guards killed and eleven injured. Three conspirators were dead and the other two executed. You can still see the damage to the sally port today. While most wanted to get off of the island, Native Americans occupied it three times. In 1964 for four hours, in 1969, when it was claimed by “Indians of All Tribes”, and 11 days later, when it was fully occupied for 19 months. The “All Tribes” offered the government $24 in beads, cloth, and other trade goods, like Manhattan Island. They claimed it was like a Reservation, as it is isolated, doesn’t support game, and has rocky, unproductive soil. Signs from the occupations remain today. While in San Francisco, this is a worthwhile stop. I’ll guarantee it will make you value your freedom! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

RIDING TIPS

GROUP RIDING

R

iding a motorcycle is a great deal of fun, but it is a lot more fun when you have a few friends to ride with. Riding in a group does however have its own set of challenges. The first is communication. Anyone who has ridden in a group knows that it is difficult to talk to other riders while you are riding, unless everyone has an Intercom system. Although an intercom system is probably the best form of on bike communication, not every rider has one. Therefore it is important that the riders in a group have a set of basic hand signals so that they can communicate effectively while they are on the road. Each group should have at least a basic set of signals that can easily convey issues ranging from the need to stop (gas, restroom/ rest break, and bike problems) to warnings (police, debris/ road hazards, and direction changes). Another problem while riding in a relatively large group (approximately 6 or more riders) is keeping the group together. Things such stop lights/ stop signs and other vehicles on the road tend to create chaos for the cohesive nature of a group. There will be instances when a group may be broken up into smaller groups: • Only a portion of the group makes it through a light before it changes • Turning at an intersection allows other vehicles to divide the group • Not all riders can pass a vehicle(s) safely • Mechanical problem/ rider falls at the middle or near the back of the group What can the Leader(s) of the group do to keep this from happening? There are a few things that the riders can do to keep their group together as well as make their ride safer. As the lead rider approaches a light that is about to change, he/she has a few options: • If there is enough space & time and it is safe to do so, slowdown and let the light change before the group arrives • Pull over after passing the light or slow down so that the rest of the group can catch up without having to do excessive speeds • When passing slower traffic: • Do not pass until there is enough room for all riders to pass (if the group is relatively small) • After passing a vehicle, make enough room for the riders behind you. You don’t want to stand another rider in “no man’s land” (the wrong side of the yellow line) with oncoming traffic The most important thing that a group can do to make their ride more enjoyable and safer is to be organized. The entire group should know the destination of the ride, as well as the route being taken. Also there should be designated rest stop as well as meeting spots in case the group does get separated. What this does is take pressure of riders who are separated from the rest of the group. Riders will be less inclined to ride over their heads in an effort to try and catch up/ keep up with the group, if they know that everyone will be waiting for them at a certain gas station, restaurant etc up the road. This is particularly 22

true of newer riders, who might be uncomfortable with the pace set by more experienced riders in the group. Cell phones are also a good idea in case of an emergency (fall, mechanical failure, etc); the rest of the group can be contacted and kept apprised of the situation.

GROUP RIDING 101 When riding in a group the riders should ride in what is called “Staggered Formation”, diagram 5.1 depicts this staggered formation in action. As we can see the leader is in the left portion of the lane (blocking position). The next rider is 1 second behind the leader, in the right portion of the lane. The third rider is in the left portion of the lane, 2 seconds behind the leader and 1 second behind the second rider. And the forth rider is 2 seconds behind the second rider. The easiest way to judge following distance is by using time. While following a vehicle, choose a stationary object up ahead (a tree, sign, light standard, etc). As the vehicle in front of you passes the object, start counting until you pass the same object. Ideally you want a minimum of two seconds between you and the rider directly in front of you. Note: The lead rider should always assume the blocking position for the lane that the group is riding in, when the group changes lanes then the leader should again assume the blocking position and the other riders stagger themselves accordingly. This “Staggered Formation” provides safety for a group in two ways: Size – the group is more compact, you can imagine how long this group of 4 riders would be if they were riding single file. The last rider would be off the diagram. Also the more spread out a group is the more it invites car drivers to attempt to merge between riders Space – every rider in the group has a safety cushion around him/ her, 2 seconds in front and behind as well as room to maneuver from side to side to avoid debris, potholes etc. Note: There will be situations when it will be safer for the group to use the single file formation. These would include: • Turns • On/Off Ramps • Streetcar tracks • Passing slower vehicles • Construction Zones

If you are a leader who constantly loses slower riders in the group, you are not doing a good job of leading. A good leader also has to be able to follow others as well. “If you cannot follow others, how do you expect others to follow you?”

• Narrow Bridges • Roads with parked cars When passing slower vehicles (diagram 5.2), each rider should spend as little time as possible in “no man’s land”. The group should not try to pass together. If something were to happen some riders could be caught on the wrong side of the yellow line, with on-coming traffic rapidly approaching. The Leader In every group there is a leader, but what makes a good leader? Does the rider with the most experience make the best leader? Not necessarily! Just because a rider has a high level of skill doesn’t mean that he/ she will make a good leader. “Good skills are irrelevant in the absence of good judgment!” To be a leader a rider must be able to set a pace that everyone in the group can follow safely. He or she must also be able to plan ahead and communicate to the other members of the group. Making last minute turns, stops, lane changes, etc will catch other riders off guard and can lead to disaster.

May 2017

Chase Rider As well as having a leader, a group should also have a chase rider, the last rider in the group. This rider’s duty is to keep an eye on the riders in front of him/ her. This should also be a rider with a fair amount of experience. If something were to happen (a fall, mechanical failure, etc) to a rider near the back of the group, the chase rider will be there to deal with the situation. One of the biggest problems with riding in a group is that speeds can get out of hand quickly. Normally the ride starts off at legal speeds, then one rider ups the pace a little, and then the next rider will up the ante. Before you know it the group is doing speeds well above the legal limit. How do you keep this from happening? The best way to that I can suggest to keep this from happening is to ride with people that you know and trust. Personally if I ride with someone for the first time and they do something that put others at risk I will not ride with that person again period! I have better things to do than scrape someone off the road. “Riding in a group is not about competing with each other; it’s about working together as a unit. If you want to compete go to the track!” Source: motorcycle basics.com

AUTHENTIC PASTA CARBONARA

1 Pkg. of Linguine - Get it going first Cut a package of Smoked Bacon in half; width wise. It’s easier to work with this way. In a 12 inch skillet, fry up 18 strips of the halved bacon & drain, then chop into bit size pieces;leaving a tad of bacon grease in skillet. Turn down heat and add to bacon fat 1 clove of minced garlic and 1 small pkg. of frozen peas; apprx. 1 cup’s worth. Beat up in a separate bowl 2 X-Large Eggs Have ready 2 Cups of Thinly Grated Parmesan Cheese, or if you’re trying to impress, spring for 2 cups of Parmigiano-Reggiano at the Deli counter. I just use the Sargento’s thin grated Parmesan and it tastes great. Now, this all has to come together really quick so drain your pasta, saving a cupful to add back in, dump pasta back into pot you cooked it in, immediately add your beaten eggs and mix like crazy to cook eggs, then add the bacon, garlic, and pea fry mixture. Now add 1 cup of the Parmessan cheese and the cup of pasta water. Also add a Tbl. of lemon juice and some dried basil. Mix it all up and top it off with the remaining cup of Parmesan cheese and some dried parsley. TaDa.....You have made an Italian Classic you can be proud to serve. Serve w/ hot, crusty Italian bread w/ melted Mozzarella. Delicioso!

Monthly K.I.S.S. Tip:

Whenever you’re cooking ANY meat; pork chops, hamburger, pot roast, steak....set it out and let it get room temperature. Marinate if desired but just let it adjust. If you throw in pan direct from fridge it automatically tightens up and juices do not flow properly. ALSO, always, always let your steak, sliced meat or meatloaf cool for a full 10 minutes before serving. All the juices go back into the meat and make it juicey & tender.

Put one pack of Oreo’s in a ziplock bag and roll over them with a rolling pin or anything to crush them up into small pieces. Take and sprinkle very evenly the entire bottom of glass baking dish as this is your bottom crust. In a separate bowl mix up the pudding, milk and vanilla. In another separate bowl mix up the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Mix in powdered sugar and fold gently into whipped topping. Now mix the pudding mix gently into this mix. Smooth out with a wooden spoon. Now take your 2nd bag of Oreo’s and roll over them until tiny pieces and top off the entire top of your whipped cake to simulate dirt. Go around and add your edible flowers or make your own if you have a piping bag. Add edible grass all over and just make it look as Spring like as possible. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

FIRST-EVER MOTORCYCLE CAUCUS FORMED IN U.S. SENATE In a rare bipartisan effort, motorcyclists are getting a very special form of representation in the U.S. Senate as two Senators are reaching across the aisle to establish the first Senate Motorcycle Caucus. Kickstarting this unique legislative road trip, Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Gary Peters (D-Michigan), both lifelong motorcyclists, will serve as co-chairs of the caucus, which will advocate on behalf of both motorcycle riders and manufacturers. Sen. Ernst said her concern for motorcycles and motorcyclists started when she was a child. “Some of my most cherished memories include motorcycles, from delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields, to riding through the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” Ernst said. “Throughout my 99 county tour of Iowa, I have heard from many of these folks about some of their priorities, including improving safety, infrastructure and energy efficiency. These concerns are shared by folks across our great state and country, and I look forward to working with Sen. Peters toward solutions.” Sen. Peters bought his first motorcycle at age 11. “I’ve loved motorcycles since I was a kid, and I started a newspaper route to buy my first motorcycle at age 11. To this day, I believe there is no better way to see Michigan’s beautiful scenery than by bike, whether I’m riding to meet with constituents and small businesses or taking my bike out on the weekend,” Peters said. “Motorcyclists come from all walks of life, and I can’t think of a better way to bring together a diverse and dedicated group of advocates to discuss everything from safety concerns to manufacturing. I’m looking forward to working with Sen. Ernst as co-chair of the bipartisan Senate Motorcycle Caucus to foster these important discussions and find common ground with motorcycle lovers across the country.” SECURITY AND PRIVACY IN YOUR (SPY) CAR STUDY ACT With motorcyclists sharing the road with a growing number of Smart vehicles, security from cyber-intrusion is a significant safety concern, and U.S. Reps Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) have introduced H.R. 701; the Security and Privacy in Your Car Study Act of 2017 (“SPY Car Study Act”) to address automotive software safety, cybersecurity and privacy regulations. This bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct a study to determine and recommend standards for the regulation of the cybersecurity of motor vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in the United States. The study shall identify: - isolation measures that are necessary to separate critical software systems that can affect the driver’s control of the movement of the vehicle from other software systems; - measures that are necessary to detect and prevent or minimize anomalous codes, in vehicle software systems, associated with malicious behavior; 28

- techniques that are necessary to detect and prevent, discourage, or mitigate intrusions into vehicle software systems and other cybersecurity risks in motor vehicles; and - best practices to secure driving data about a vehicle’s status or about the owner, lessee, driver, or passenger of a vehicle that is collected by the electronic systems of motor vehicles; and - a timeline for implementing systems and software that reflect such measures, techniques, and best practices. POLICE MOTORCYCLE HIT BY AUTOPILOT TESLA According to a report in the Arizona Republic, a Phoenix police motorcycle was hit by a Tesla Model X operating on autopilot. Police said the officer and the Tesla exited a freeway with the motorcycle in front. When the rider stopped for a light, the car stopped as well, but then started moving forward. The officer jumped off the bike, which was struck at low speed by the car. The driver reported having the car on autopilot at the time. The officer was uninjured and the car driver wasn’t ticketed. Tesla has warned customers in the past that its autopilot mode does not mean a driver can completely disengage, but increasingly it seems customers are unwilling to listen. Tesla’s website specifically states that drivers are in command of their vehicles after exiting freeways. The company announced in October that it would soon begin including hardware in its vehicles that could make them fully autonomous. Currently, the vehicles are simply equipped with driver aids like forward collision warning, automatic braking and auto steering. “AUTOCYCLES” NO LONGER CONSIDERED MOTORCYCLES IN TWO MORE STATES Colorado and Wyoming are the latest states to reclassify their licensing requirements which allow drivers of so-called “Autocycles”, such as the Polaris Slingshot, to operate the vehicle with a valid state driver’s license instead of requiring a motorcycle endorsement or license. Drivers under the age of 18 will still be required to wear a helmet, in accordance with the states’ motorcycle helmet laws. Because of the three-wheeled configuration and characteristics of autocycles, determining how to classify them has been a challenge for state governments. Polaris calls the Slingshot a “threewheeled moto-roadster.” Initially, when it was introduced to the market in 2014, consumers were required to have a motorcycle endorsement or license to operate the Slingshot, which offers a distinct ride through its open cockpit and side-by-side seating. Currently, 30 states, including the District of Columbia, require only a driver’s license to drive an autocycle. The remaining states require a motorcycle endorsement, but Polaris says efforts are being made to reclassify the vehicle to gain full conformity throughout the United States. “As we educate state officials on the unique attributes of this category-creating Slingshot, they are realizing that the licensing requirement for the roadster are more similar to that of a driver’s license than of a motorcycle endorsement or license,” said Rachael Elia, Slingshot Marketing Manager. “Our goal is to gain a

unified classification across the country to provide more opportunity and driving freedom for consumers looking for the ultimate thrill experience.” DRIVER WHO “DIDN’T CARE” HE HIT MOTORCYCLIST GETS 15 YEARS Remember the Texas driver who was filmed deliberately swerving across centerline into a passing motorcyclist and then said “I don’t care” that he’d knocked the rider and his girlfriend to the ground? The heartless car driver is 69-year-old William Crum and following a two-day trial at 355th District Court in Hood County, Texas, he’s been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury. The 15-year sentence means that Crum, who was arrested soon after the incident in Granbury, TX in October 2015, will be in prison until he’s 84. HARLEY PULLED INTO POLITICAL FIGHT OVER LEATHER PRODUCTS Many challenges face motorcycle manufacturers selling their products in other countries; and a strange example of this is Harley-Davidson facing a public relations issue in India over leather, something as closely associated with bikers as the bikes they ride. Leather comes from cows, which are revered and even worshiped by many in the Hindu community, and according to the Hindustan Times a well-known Bollywood actor is taking on the iconic American motorcycle-maker over religious principles. Popular actor and producer Ajaz Khan is urging India’s Prime Minister to impose a ban on Harley-Davidson products, claiming they’re made from cow hide. “I just bought a leather belt from Harley Davidson,” Khan is quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying. “This is a cow leather belt. It’s being sold in the entire world. If you really consider yourself men, then I request [the Prime Minister] shuts down Harley Davidson.” MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS RALLY PUT ON HOLD AFTER LONDON TERROR ATTACK A mass London “Awareness Ride-Out” to be held a day after May 2017

a deadly terrorist attack in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster, seat of the British Parliament, had to be rescheduled in the wake of the Wednesday, March 22 car attack that killed four and injured more than 50 pedestrians. The campaign group “We Ride London,” which aims to be the “main lobby group for riders of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in London,” had invited thousands to join a ride at 1pm on Thursday April 23, from Regents Park through central London to City Hall, but had to call the event off. A statement on the group’s Facebook page said: “We have decided to cancel tomorrow’s awareness ride in light of the terrible events in our capital today. Now is not the time to be hindering the emergency and security services as they investigate and recover from this.” ROLLING INTO RENO FOR NCOM CONVENTION With the 32nd Annual NCOM Convention in Reno just weeks away, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists is requesting that MROs, Motorcycle Clubs, & riding associations submit the names of those members & supporters who have died this year, so that we may honor their memories during the traditional “Ringing of the Bell” tribute to fallen riders during the opening ceremonies. Scrappy, a local beachgoer, couldn’t even get a second look from any of the girls on the beach. So he headed over to Razor, at the lifeguard tower, to see if he had any advice for him. “Dude, it’s obvious,” said Razor. “You’re wearing those gnarly old swimming trunks that make you look like an old geezer. They’re majorly outta’ style. Your best bet is to get yourself a Speedo— say, two sizes too small—and drop a potato inside it. You’ll have all the babes you can handle, dude.” The following weekend, Scrappy hits the beach with his brandspanking-new tight-ass neon green Speedo and his potato, and it’s not long before he approaches Razor at the lifeguard tower once more. “For cryin’ out loud,” yells Scrappy, “it’s worse than before! Everyone on the beach acts disgusted as I walk by—covering their faces, turning away, laughing! What’s wrong now?” “Jeez, Scrap!” shrieks Razor, “The potato goes in front, dude!” ____________________________________________________ A Doctor was performing rounds at the hospital one morning and while checking up on a patient named Bubba, he asked ... ‘So how’s your breakfast this morning, Bubba?’ ‘It’s pretty good except for the Kentucky Jelly. I aint never had no jelly like that and I’m born and raised in Kentucky. The Doctor asked to see the jelly and Bubba produced a foil packet labeled ‘KY Jelly.’ ____________________________________________________ Thibodeau and Boudreau were hunting when Boudreau grabs his chest and falls to the ground, Thibodeau whips out his cell phone, calls 911 and tells the operator, “I think Boudreau is dead! What should I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, “Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence -- then a shot is heard. Thibodeau’s voice comes back on the line, “Okay, gotcha’, now what?” ____________________________________________________ A woman and a baby were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby’s first exam. The doctor arrived, and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed. 30

‘Breast-fed,’ she replied. ‘Well, strip down to your waist,’ the doctor ordered. She did he pinched her nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination. Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, ‘No wonder this baby is underweight. You don’t have any milk.’ I know,’ she said, ‘I’m his Grandma, but I’m sure glad I came...... literally.” ____________________________________________________ At a travel agency in Shanghai, Pervey Pete asked the Chinese attendant if she could escort him on a city tour and asked for her mobile number to confirm. She gave him a big smile, nodded her head and said, “Sex sex sex, wan free sex for tonight .” Pervey Pete very excitedly replied, “Wow, you Chinese women are really hospitable! A guy standing next to him overheard, tapped him on the shoulder and said; “What she really said was: 6-6-6-1-3-6-4-2-9 ____________________________________________________ A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large plastic garbage bags behind her. One of the bags was ripped and every once in a while a $20 bill fell out onto the sidewalk. Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, “Ma’am, there are $20 bills falling out of that bag.” “Oh, really? Darn it!” said the little old lady. “I’d better go back and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me, Officer.” “Well, now, not so fast,” said the cop. “Where did you get all that money? You didn’t steal it, did you?” winking at the little old darlin’. “Oh, no, no”, said the old lady. “You see, my back yard is right next to a golf course. A lot of golfers come and pee through a knot hole in my fence, right into my flower garden. It used to really tick me off. Kills the flowers you know. Then I thought, ‘why not make the best of it?’ So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my hedge clippers. Every time some guy sticks his “thing” through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, ‘OK., buddy! Give me $20 or off it comes!’ “Well, that seems only fair,” said the cop, laughing. “OK. Good luck! Oh, by the way, what’s in the other bag?” “Well now, not everybody pays.”

May 2017

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I hope you are putting your boots in the wind. Riding season is here in full swing. The blooming of spring this year has been absolutely glorious. The flowering trees really stepped out this year. May is the month that all of the greenery with perfumed blooms make their powerful smells and overpower the exhaust pipes of fellow riders. I’ve already made the mistake of riding without sunblock and made my contribution of skin to the sun god. Hope you avoid my example. May also brings Armed Forces Day, a day to remember and pay tribute to those who serve in our military and are defending our nation. The world challenges are large today due to the weak stance of the former administration. When America is strong it is a lot easier to stay out of conflicts and wars. When America is weak the dictators and tyrants come out of the woodwork and wreak havoc on the world. Our service members will be doing double duty for a while until we regain our rightful place as a power for peace. The big day in May for me is Memorial Day. While the media and advertising agencies want you to believe it’s all about hot dogs, skidoos, sun tans and all the great things you can put in a solo cup it’s really a day to remember those who died in service protecting our nation. I have a list that is longer than I care to say of brothers I served with who died in uniform. I make sure that over the Memorial Day weekend I do something to honor their sacrifice and remember them. I don’t do it just for those I knew, I do it for all who have planted their feet to protect liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Freedom and liberty for the common man are frail and perishable treasures rarely known in the history of the world. The spark of grace bestowed on our founding fathers that gave inspiration for the creation of our constitution was earth shaking in the history of man. The constitution cannot protect itself. It has to be protected from those who would change it, weaken it or do away with it. Those attacks on our liberty come from enemies both foreign and

May 2017

domestic!!! Those who serve stand between us and the evil forces around the world that want to subdue us and turn us into just another third world country to be dominated. Freedom and Liberty are the enemies of tyrants. Many have shed their blood to insure those tyrants don’t take away our freedoms. Every American would be wise to read the constitution and thank God and those who have served and died who understood how precious freedom is and were willing to die to preserve it. Going in harm’s way to protect a fellow American’s freedom deserves honor. Memorial Day weekend I’m riding the Smokey Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride. This year’s ride will commemorate women who have served. I’m riding to pay respects to Army Warrant Officer Billie Jean Grinder who died in Iraq. She was Tennessee’s first woman to die in the war on terror. Capt. Marcus R. Alford of Knoxville was killed in the same incident. The ride will leave the Sevier County Courthouse, 125 Court Avenue, Sevierville, TN 37862 at 11am on Sunday, May 28th. Line up starts at 10am for the 65 mile police escorted ride to the Veteran’s Overlook on Clinch Mountain in Grainger County, TN. The ride and ceremonies are very well organized and heart felt. It’s a great way to ride for those who can’t. For more information go to www. smokeymountainthunder.net. Check out the information on our events page in this edition of the magazine for more ride and contact information. I’ll be riding back to Nashville after the ride to attend the 29 May, Memorial Day activities in Sumner County and at the National Cemetery on Gallatin Road in Nashville. Two of my service brothers are at rest in the national cemetery and it gives me a chance to remember them and spend a minute. I share a shot of good stuff with them and leave the glass. Another great way to honor them is to preserve the constitution as written. It’s our security! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.
