Fall is just around the corner and I could not be any more excited, it’s always my favorite time for riding! And obviously September is the biggest month for motorcycle events because the events page is loaded with some awesome things to attend. For one, the Buffalo Valley State Amateur Hillclimb Championship featuring a double header weekend this year the 9th & 10th, it’s a thrilling thing to watch. Another great event is the 36th Annual Leslie Watson Memorial Toy Run & Benefit Party the 15th- 17th and if you’ve never attended, Bikers Who Care always make it a great time. Make plans to be at Tennessee Bike Fest the 20th – 23rd in Tracy City up on scenic Monteagle Mountain, it’s going to be a blast and I can’t wait for this event. Then we have Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival coming up at the Loretta Lynn Ranch Sept. 28th – Oct. 1st which promises to be fun and very entertaining. Nirvana Roadhouse in Pulaski will be having their Fall Rally Sept. 29th – Oct. 1stas well as Micro Wrestling on the 8th that should be interesting. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, check out the events page and our amazing advertisers’ ads for more fun events to attend as we cruise into the Fall riding season. The 15th is National POW/MIA Recognition Day and we would like to take a moment and remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA), as well as their families. Also, we would like to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. With Scott being a fireman, and me the wife of a fireman, 9-11 is an especially difficult day at our house. I don’t think anybody will ever forget where they were that morning, I know we won’t. NEVER FORGET. Did you know that yesterday, over 20 Veterans were lost to suicide? That makes the war at home more dangerous than all our combat missions around the world. Would you like to help end the stigma surrounding post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury? Join Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22 on October 1st and lets save our Veterans. Mission 22 is an organization dedicated to raising awareness, enlisting support, and ending veteran suicide in America. 100% of all proceeds from the ride go directly to Mission 22 in support of American Veterans. There will be 22 separate rides leaving from different locations from all over our state and 5 other states. All rides will end at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills where Mission BBQ will provide delicious food during a special military tribute hosted by Loretta & Friends. Spots are limited and you must register online at https://mission-22.myshopify.com/products/ lorettas-ride-for-mission-22. Register today for one of the 22 rides and lets help save our Veterans! We have some exciting news! On August 19th we were blessed with our first Grandbaby, yes you heard me right, Grandbaby! I know we don’t look or seem old enough (LOL), but we are and we could not be more proud of our daughter and son-in-law or happier for them. Malcolm Euan weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce, he was 20 inches long and the most precious thing I’ve ever seen. Grandchildren are a gift and a blessing and I intend on loving and spoiling him to death, after all that’s my job! Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, be safe on the road, and we’ll see you in the wind. And as always, please patronize our advertisers because they are what keep this magazine going and free to you every month. Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Pastor Ron’s messages can now be downloaded off the website Leadership Skills can now be downloaded off the website

“LEAVE IT ALONE” Matt.13:24-30 Here Jesus uses an agricultural parable to make His point, but what seems to be about agriculture, is really about spiritual warfare at the highest level. Jesus compares heaven to an agricultural crop: Vs.24 “heaven is like a man which planted good seed in his field.” This sentence alone depicts hard work, value, and ownership. Vs.25 “But while the men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat.” We cannot be caught sleeping on the job; 1 Pet.5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant, your adversary the devil …walks about seeking whom he may devour.” The “tares” he sowed could make one very sick and may cause death. The key here is to understand why the “enemy planted tares” in the first place. There was nothing the “enemy” could do about the integrity of the “good seed,” so he planted an imitation of the “good seed.” The “tares” represent the tragedies in your life: child abuse, sickness, divorce, prison, addictions. When the tares were noticed, the servants asked “shall we gather them up?” But the master said “nay, lest ye root up the wheat with it, let both grow together.” Sometimes you just got to Leave it Alone, stop trying to fix everything and trust God. You know you planted “good seed,” success doesn’t always look like what you expected. When the children of Israel faced the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army coming down on them, Moses said “fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” Eph. 6:13-14 “…having done all to stand, stand therefore!” The enemy (devil) can do nothing about the quality of the seed, he can only plant an imitation of the seed, he is not after the seed, he’s after the master (God). 2 Chron.20:15 “…the battle is not your but God’s.” It’s not about you, the devil uses you to get to God. If the enemy can devalue you, he can devalue the entire harvest. You are “good seed,” the troubles around you are the “tares,” You are not your past, you are not who the world says you are, you are not even who you think you are, you are who God says you are according to His Word. Example: you never hear of professional bank robbers planning a robbery down to the last detail, then robbing a homeless shelter, they go where the value is. If you weren’t “good seed” then the “enemy” wouldn’t plant “tares” in your life. As a result of this message, I now have a better understanding of September 2017

Eph.6:12 “For we wrestle not with flesh and blood, 1. But against principalities 2. Against powers 3. Against the rulers of the darkness of this world 4. Against spiritual wickedness in high places I have noticed that those that have a “Religious Relationship” with God, don’t have a whole lot of challenges, they just roll with the flow, but all those that have an “Intimate Relationship” with God are constantly fight with the “tares” in their ministries. Remember that the enemy can’t change the quality of “good seed,” let God deal with the “tares,” you just stay focused on the call of God on your life.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

kisses and cuddles.”

“Hey! I’m Brittany! I came from a not very nice place-- I was so thin and shy, but now I’m a lot more outgoing! I still need work with leashes and manners. It’s going to take some patience, but I’ll love you forever! I like riding in the car and I’m great when meeting new people even kids, love

“Hey, I’m Claddagh! I love to play with any kind of toy or person or dog! I am still learning, so I tend to be MOUTHY. I still act like a puppy, so I’ll need some help on my manners and leash walking. Once I settle down I love belly rubs, and I can sit for treats!” “Hi my name is Graceann! I spent some time with a foster family and this is what they had to say”: “Whoever is lucky enough to adopt her is really getting a special cat. She is shy at first, but after a day or two she is so super sweet. She loves to rub up against your leg or the chair you’re sitting in, or really anything she can rub up against. She doesn’t really get into trouble and listens well when she is redirected. She’s working on coming out of her shell more and has started sitting in our laps and letting us pet her. She LOVES other cats, the first time she met ours she tried her best to get our cat to love her, she rubbed all over her, and just purred away. Our cat wasn’t so sure about this new extremely lovable cat. She tolerated our Pomeranian, she hasn’t hissed or smacked at her, but she would rather our dog not bark at her. I think with a quiet, small dog she would do perfect, she just doesn’t like the barking. She is vocal when her bowl is empty--she is going to let you know that she needs something. And she has done great with our kids.” “Hey, I’m Inez! I can be a little standoffish but I’m learning how to trust people again. Give me time to decompress and a nice window to look out- I’ll learn you’re here to keep me safe and happy. I would do better being an only dog and I’m kinda set in in my ways for children. I’m ready for a forever home! Please come meet me!”

“Hello, my name is Mini! I was rescued from terrible neglect thanks to the great officers here at McKamey Animal Center. If you would like to meet with me it is best for you to get down on the floor with me. I still can get a little frightened. I will run if you move too quickly. I am not super confident in trusting people but with time and lots of treats I will warm up to you. I love to lay in your lap and be loved on. I especially love being scratched behind my ears. I love walks but I mostly want to climb on you and love you. I am NOT good with children so if you have kids I cannot meet with you.” “Hey, I’m Moxxy! I’d really like to get out of this kennel and run and play with you! I have so much energy, I don’t know what to do with myself-I’m probably a little too much for kids. I’m sure if someone gave me lots of playtime and toys to keep me busy, I could learn to settle down. I’m smart as a whip too, I can even open some door handles!” “Hi my name is Oriana! I am a little wary of men at first but will warm up so please just go slow. My foster dad said I was a ball of energy, but could also just chill and relax when it was appropriate. I love to be right with you no matter what we are doing. I love other dogs and had lots of play time with my foster dog brother.” “Hey, I’m Thumper! I started out pretty nervous about this place, but now I’m opening up! I love to play with other dogs! I need some help getting out some of my energy in a positive way-- so lots of good chews and fun toys should be in my future! If you spend a little time working with me and give me a little patience, we could have a great life together!”

THE CASE FOR NATIONAL CONCEALED CARRY RECIPROCITY

G

reetings fellow bikers. Since last month’s column, Tracy and I took a 3,300-mile road trip to Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. During this trip, we traveled through several states – most notably Illinois. The patchwork of state laws regarding concealed carry – and reciprocity – creates a problem for those of us who wish to carry a concealed handgun for protection when traveling.

concealed handgun in another state that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms.

While there have been states which allow for some type of handgun carry since the early 1920s, concealed carry permitting was not adopted by any state until Georgia did so in 1976. Indiana followed in 1980, Maine and North Dakota in 1985 and South Dakota in 1986. The floodgates opened soon thereafter, with 22 other states creating some kind of licensing for concealed carry over the next ten years. And while the formation of gun control groups (Brady Campaign, Everytown for Gun Safety, etc.) were to come years later, the Left immediately jumped in and said these laws would create scenes of Dodge City – with “blood flowing in the streets.” Naturally, there was a lot of media attention and states which were firmly controlled by the Democratic Party knuckled under and avoided legislation to allow for concealed carry programs. A few opted to pander to gun owners by creating “May Issue” programs – which were essentially the same as having no concealed carry law since a specified government official would decide if you really needed to carry a concealed firearm. Very few citizens are approved in these states. Today, every state has enacted a concealed carry licensing program, with Illinois being the last, having been forced by court order to do so in 2014.

Additionally, the bill specifies that a qualified individual who lawfully carries or possesses a concealed handgun in another state: (1) is not subject to the federal prohibition on possessing a firearm in a school zone, and (2) may carry or possess the concealed handgun in federally owned lands that are open to the public.

Like other states with very restrictive gun laws, Illinois will not honor or provide any sort of reciprocity with any other state. This is the rub. When you are traveling, like we did recently, and riding through one of these states, you could be arrested for having a handgun anywhere on your person. These are almost always felony charges, which may lead to you not being approved for future gun purchases. This author believes the best solution for the current patchwork of concealed carry laws would be a national constitutional carry amendment. However, this is highly unlikely in the foreseeable future. What can be done more easily, now that conservatives control both Federal legislative bodies and the executive branch, is national reciprocity. We have a very realistic opportunity to do this as a bill has already been introduced. On January 3, 2017, North Carolina Representative Richard Hudson introduced H.R. 38 – Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 in the House of Representatives. Since that time 208 other house members have signed on as co-sponsors, including three Democrats. Here is what the congress.gov/bill website provides as summary text for H.R. 38: H.R. 38 – 115th Congress (2017-2018)

In simple terms, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 will allow a handgun carry permit holder in Tennessee to legally conceal carry their handgun in any state which has a concealed carry permit for their residents. Since all 50 states have such programs, you could carry legally in all 50 states. One would also assume this reciprocity would be honored by the District of Columbia, since they also have a “may issue” concealed carry permitting program. The bill will not grant open carry privileges – at least in states which do not have an open carry provision -and the permittee will have to abide by all concealed carry laws in force in the state they are in. Status H.R. 38 After being introduced on January 3, 2017, H.R. 38 was immediately referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary and then on January 12, it was referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations – where seven months later it still sits awaiting action. What can you do? It is very important for all Second Amendment supporters to reach out to their elected representatives and demand that this bill be approved by the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations. Once this is done it will need approval by the Committee on the Judiciary before it goes to the full House of Representatives. If approved by the full House of Representatives, H.R. 38 will be referred to the U.S. Senate, which currently has a companion bill, S.446 – Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, pending. After passage by both legislative branches, it will be sent to President Trump for signature, which he has promised to sign. Please contact your U.S. representative, and both of your U.S. Senators, and urge them to support this bill. You can go to this NRA-ILA website to reach your lawmakers: https://act.nraila.org/ takeaction.aspx Until next month, keep the shiny side up!

LEATHER By Scott High

Cooler mornings mean fall is coming, fall is our favorite time of year to ride but the temperature swings from cool mornings to warm afternoons mean you’d better be prepared for anything. For most of us that means leather, if you’ve ever looked at leather prices you know they vary greatly, even 2 jackets that have the same amount of insulation and look almost the same from a distance, so we thought we’d go to a leather expert and find out why. Steve Johnson, owner of Buckle and Hide Leather in Smyrna TN. has been working with leather since his teens. He remembers the family trips to Gatlinburg as a kid when everything there was handmade and how he really appreciated the craftsmanship. In his teens he learned the basics of buying and selling leather by helping his parents mostly at the Paintsville, KY Livestock Leather Market. He learned more by owning a few mall boot stores, but after a side career as a drummer, Steve started selling his handmade leather items online in 2009, and opened his retail shop in 2013 in a cool little Log Cabin. Besides leather they also sell jewelry, shirts, hats, bags, and more, not to mention patches which they can sew on most anything that fits their machines including leather. He buys some of the quality factory made leather goods they sell, jackets, vests, chaps, etc. but they still make belts, wallets, holsters, wrist cuffs, cup holders, coasters and many other leather items by hand in house. Steve is quick to point out that he is always learning his craft, and while he may take the occasional custom job, they are not a custom shop, but more of a production shop. I’ve been wearing one of his handmade “Sleek and Sturdy Work Belts” almost every day for about 2 years and I think I could wipe it off and hang it on his rack and you almost couldn’t find it amongst the new ones. The day I bought it he cut it to fit and dressed the ends on the spot and I wore it home, best belt I’ve ever owned. I asked Steve why the prices of leather vary so greatly, his simple answer, like most things you get what you pay for. He explained that tanning hides, the process that turns animal skin into leather, is a long and expensive process and how it’s tanned can make a huge difference in price. Some tanners cut corners. In some parts of the world, at one

10

end of a pasture full of cows they will have a slaughterhouse, next to it is a butcher, and next to that is the tannery and finally the leather factory all in a row. Others actually split the leather in sheets so they get 2 sometimes 3 “hides” out of one. The split hides are much thinner and don’t have the grain from the outside of the original hide so they paint them and press in the texture. With these thinner sheets of split leather, snaps, buttons, seams, and pockets don’t hold as long and the leather just doesn’t last as long and usually can’t be repaired. Another trick to make cheap leather is to gather all of the cut pieces of scrap leather and sew them together to make a patchwork hide. Like the split leather, the patchwork leather may give you a season or 2 of use, but higher quality leather can usually be repaired and is the stuff you can pass down to your kids and even grandkids not to mention how it will hold up if it ever has to slide on asphalt for several feet. Steve says they still sell some good quality inexpensive leather, but says they have started selling more made in the U.S.A. leather products which are generally much higher quality. He says that American leather companies are held to higher standards than the rest of the world not to mention they tend to take more pride in their work. If you’d like to check out Buckle and Hide Leather, they are having a swap meet in September, and a Veterans event in October, see the ad in this issue.

2017 SOUTHERN BACKROADS HOG RALLY

If you own a Harley and you missed this event, you missed the best event possible for a mere $25, or for $15 more you could have had a t-shirt, patch and pin. This year, Harley eliminated State Rallies and began Regional HOG Rallies. This rally started at 10 am on Tuesday, July 11, with a ride to Cumberland Caverns, where the Grascals entertained, and ran non-stop till Saturday, with Nashville’s Lipstick Blondes closing the rally. When I say it ran straight through, I mean there was barely time to sleep. After returning from the caverns on Tuesday afternoon, Country Roads H-D sponsored a dealer party and introduced the Cookeville Mayor and other officials. Then off to the host hotel with music by Confederate Railroad. A few hours of sleep and at 9 am, Wednesday, off to tour Brushy Mountain Prison, now closed, and Johnny Cash music performed by former inmate, Jimmy Combs (#000137600-tier #2, cell 10). Brushy was home to the baddest of the bad, from 1886 until 2009. The Devil’s Triangle awaited the adventuresome for the ride home. Entertainment that evening was by The Outlaws. On Thursday morning, Ralph’s Donuts offered a free donut and coffee and an opportunity to mingle with the motor officers of Cookeville, Putnam County and the Highway Patrol. There was also a chase of a “convict” (Stix Jenkins) by Det. Shannon, demonstrating some mighty fine riding skills. After Ralph’s, the attendees were treated to a day at Hard Times USA, pop 1, a 700 acre private “ghost town”. Hard Times is not open to the public, but allowed the HOGs in. It contains all the replica buildings, including a general store, doctor’s office, saloon, and even a Gulf gas station, complete with vintage cars. The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band entertained. After a scenic ride back, it was off to downtown for a block party and contests. Friday began with a rained out “Run What Ya Brung” drag race. Fortunately, skies cleared in time for the HOGs vs Pigs riding skills contest. This year, Jimmy Kelly set up one of the toughest courses yet. The HOGs represented by Tim Hill, Buck LeBlanc, Van Donaldson, Brian Day, Dave Rogers, and Katlin Riley outscored the PIGs represented by THP SGT Jeff Webb, Off Kyle Farley, DET Shannon Smith, TRP Gordon Roberts, OFF Christian Smith, and THP SGT Wolfy. Dave Rogers was the top rider for the HOGs and SGT Jeff Webb of the THP was the top PIG rider. That evening the HOGs were in for a real treat – Pro Flat Track Racing at the Fairgrounds (in the dirt) presented by Octane Sports Management’s Steel Shoe Nation. The AMA, once again brought their Pro All Star Hillclimb to Buffalo Valley Dragway on Saturday. After an exciting day of hillclimb, The Lipstick Blondes entertained with their high energy party music. The City of Cookeville is the most motorcycle friendly town I’ve ever seen! The Holiday Inn served as host hotel. Judy and I stayed at the Country Inns and Suites, where the manager, Jeff, catered to the guests every need. Buckets, soap, towels, and hose awaited those sick souls who washed their bikes every morning. Cookies were available 24 hours. One of the receptionists even offered to drive us downtown when a cab didn’t show (adult beverages were to be consumed). The Visitors Bureau attended all functions and worked with Gary Bagwell and his team to make it happen. Renee Miller, of Boswell’s, performed one of the best renditions of the National Anthem possible. Many thanks to the rally committee, dealers, sponsors, and HOG Regional Manager, Thor Robinson, for a great event. Boswell’s, Smoky Mountain, and Bumpus, all generously sponsored events for the rally. The $25 registration fee wouldn’t cover the normal cost of any one event! Special thanks to all of the volunteers, who sacrificed some their own fun to make sure others had a great time. They even wore costumes to match each venue. Once again Tennessee has been chosen for next year’s regional rally. Maryville will have a real challenge to top this year’s event. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

My Motor Maid Sisters By Donna Farrell I have 1,391 sisters. We all ride our own motorcycles. We meet once a year for our “family reunion”. Weekend rides and meeting for lunch (sometimes 300 miles one-way) keeps us in touch throughout the year. We owe it all to Linda Dugeau and Dot Robinson.

TN Motor Maids at Convention Donna Farrell and Ev Straight

Linda Dugeau had a vision to start a motorcycle club just for women. In the mid 1930’s, she shared her idea with Dot Robinson and together they began their search for women who would become the charter members of the Motor Maids. They wrote letters to every woman they found an address for that just might be interested. In 1940, the Motor Maids of America (now Motor Maids, Inc.) was formed with 51 charter members and in 1941 the American Motorcycle Association issued charter #509 to the Motor Maids. Dot became our first president and Linda our first secretary. Arriving at our 77th Annual Convention (family reunion) in East Peoria, Illinois, I had no more put my foot down on the pavement in front of our convention hotel and taken off my helmet that I found myself face-to-face with one of our Silver Life members (30 to 49 years of active membership in the Motor Maids). Lillian Lloyd, part of the welcoming committee, stood in front of me with a big smile on her face saying “welcome”. Her eyes sparkled as she greeted me (and my husband) with big hugs, kisses on our cheeks and cold bottles of water. This was one of things that makes being part of the Motor Maids family so wonderful, I was damp from driving through a storm and just generally nasty from 90% humidity and road grime. Lillian was giving me hugs like she hadn’t seen me for years. This was the first time I had met Lillian and my very first Motor Maids Convention. I was a red ribbon. A red ribbon is the name given to a member at her first convention. You can only be a red ribbon once and it’s spectacular. During our three days of convention, I enjoyed breakfast with fellow red ribbons, the officers and Golden Life members (women with active membership in the Motor Maids for 50+ years). We were welcomed by the Mayor, rode in a parade in full uniform escorted by the East Peoria police department and cheered on by the citizens of East Peoria. The Dot Robinson Dot Robinson Road Run, where

we each start at timed intervals with a total of 1,000 points and travel individually about 65 miles with the goal of keeping the points. We lose points for arriving early or late at checkpoints throughout course. This gave us the opportunity for some fun riding and competition against our sisters. There is a club business meeting to attend, time for visiting with new and old friends and a big banquet completed our time together. I spent hours in the history room that contained albums and memorabilia from 77 years of Motor Maids’ history. Losing track of time, I enjoyed news clippings from the early years and loved having Florence (a Golden Life member) point out things from the pictures she remembered. I was completely engrossed listening to stories from women like Gloria Struck, 92 years young, telling about her stopping at gas stations in the 1940’s and being refused to purchase gas simply because she was a young woman on a motorcycle. Ev Straight, sharing her 1945 winter adventure of getting “stuck” in the snowy weather when her motorcycle quit. She tried to the point of exhaustion using both her right and left legs to kick-start her H-D, but she could not get it running again. After talking with Ev for a bit, she asked me if I rode to convention by myself from Tennessee. I told her “no, my sweetie joined the ride” and pointed him out to her. She got up and went over to him, surprising him with a huge hug. I met new friends from my home state of Tennessee. Leah from South Dakota, Kay from Illinois and my husband enjoyed chatting with Janice from Florida while waiting for the clothes to dry at the local laundromat. I’m already looking forward to seeing them all again. Now for a bit of bragging: my Motor Maids sisters really love to ride. More than four hundred sixty rode at least 10,000 miles last year. Our total mileage for members coming into our 77th convention was 3,288,056 miles for the year. With members from across the United States and Canada, ages 16 to 94, we span generations. Though we may have different occupations, education, backgrounds and culture, we come together and share our love and passion for riding motorcycles. Say “hi” next time you see a Motor Maid. She’ll say “hi” back. And, if you are interested in joining us as a guest or becoming a member, you can find us at www.motormaids.org.

AMA PRO HILLCLIMB

What could be more fun than racing up a rain-slick clay, 550 foot hill, in 7-8 seconds? Well apparently to these AMA Pros, not much! Once again this year, AMA brought one of their Pro All Star Hillclimbs to Buffalo Valley Dragway, coinciding with the Southern Backroads HOG Rally. The $25 entrance fee was waived for the HOGs, which would totally off-set the registration fee for the entire rally! Judy and I climbed up to the mid-point of the hill to catch these guys in action. Thunder Roads® Magazine of Tennessee was proud to be a sponsor of this event. Boswell’s provided a VIP Tent for the HOGs. The following are the top three finishers in each class: Comp #

HAVE WE FORGOTTEN? By: Heather Briggs Photo By: Dusty Austin

This year (2017) marks the 16th anniversary of one of the most devastating days in American history. It also marks one of the last times that Americans truly were able to come together for the greater good of humanity, forging bonds through fire and pain. Ultimately, it marks one of the last times that the people of this country were able to set their differences aside to do the right thing. Since the birth of the United States, her flag was a symbol of support and hope to all who saw it. Sadly, since that fateful day, our colors are now seen as something to be feared and hated. The same people we stood shoulder to shoulder with on the day the world shook are now the very ones we fight in the streets over history, heritage, and political correctness. Where did it all go wrong? We were all united in the same pain when those towers fell. That shared pain galvanized us as a people causing us to rise up together, pledging to one another to never forget. Yet, it seems that many of us have. Was it something that just happened as an “out of sight, out of mind” moment? Was it intentionally placed in the hidden recesses our consciousness? I think not. Instead it was something that people truly wanted to forget to avoid having to face the bitter truth. The most beautiful diverse country in the world that is divided and separated…shattered if you will. We lost over three thousand people on September 11th, 2011. Friends, neighbors, parents, siblings and more were all gone in the blink of an eye simply because of a hate that can only be answered by destroying all of us and this blessed place we call home. We were brought to our knees, but just for a moment. Do you remember how we got back up? I do, and I remember watching it happen all around me. Across the airwaves, a rallying cry reached out to televisions and radio in communities from sea to shining sea. In that, we witnessed a convergence of epic proportions in the following days and weeks as an entire country locked arms and joined hands. Socioeconomic and racial barriers were broken leaving not one citizen out. Men and women from all walks of life and beliefs helped one another to their feet. With newfound resolve, they then gathered and dug through the rubble to save what could be saved and to honor what deserved to be honored. Fast forward to today and much has changed. As I write this, I am witnessing fellow countrymen destroying some of the very things that made us the country we are. History is now being deleted violently based on false accounts of history based on that agenda of division. The funny thing is that this division witnessed today would have been stomped out quickly had it been perpetrated during the aftermath of 9-11. However, now it seems to be acceptable. This division can only lead us to setback, heartbreak, and ruin. It seems that we must have forgotten the very things that we swore to never forget. It also seems that we have laid down our integrity and honor as Americans in exchange for the vile and atrocious ways of lesser civilizations. What we are seeing in our country today is nothing more than a slap in the face to those that lost their lives in the fire and ash…and all of those that have lost their lives since due to having tried to help save what they could from the debris. It has become apparent that humanity, compassion, and truth have all flown out of the window in the face of freedom and liberty. Our world has become dark and twisted into a place where even the reality of life is in question based on the false perceptions of a few instead of what truly is. Have we forgotten already the pain and anguish we felt and shared on that horrible day? Have we forgotten the way we were able to pull together despite everything and do what needed to be done? Have we forgotten the years and the turmoil in between then and now? I believe it is time to get back to remembering. I believe is time to get back to being the America that everyone stood and defended that day. I believe is time to get back to the America where freedom was earned and liberty was just! While we all continue to tear each other apart, and rip this country’s history from its very foundations we should take at least a moment to remember what we vowed 16 years ago to ourselves and to over three thousand souls that were lost that day. We need to remember what it felt like to see fellow Americans covered in tears and soot. We need to remember the pain of watching those buildings fall. Once those feelings are pulled back from where they were tucked away, take a step back to truly remember what this country means to each one of us. There can be no more sides, parties, or labels of any kind just as it was in 2011. Keeping that in mind, on September 11th, 2017 we should be able to come together as we did before, honoring our fallen and setting petty squabbles aside. Removing, rewriting, or simply ignoring history won’t change anything. It is remembering our history that allows us to push through new challenges and prevent horrific events like 9-11 from happening again. In essence, the preservation of the nation we all hold so dear lies with “We the People”. It’s time to stop trying to forget and start remembering. September 2017

BUMPUS HARLEY-DAVIDSON® OF MURFREESBORO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS By Scott High

In 1984 a father and son took a life changing cross country trip on their Harleys®. In 1985, after a near fatal stroke left son Dan Bumpus unable to return to his job as a railroad engineer, his father Jerry asked him what he wanted to do, Dan told his dad “I’d like to own a Harley Davidson® Dealership”! That answer began one of the largest family owned group of dealerships around. Jerry Bumpus went to the dealer in Memphis and was able to finalize the deal and in 1986, along with his sons Dan and Tim, opened

Bumpus Harley-Davidson® of Memphis and started what is now the 5 shop Bumpus family of dealerships. 9 years later, they opened Bumpus Harley-Davidson® of Jackson with Scott, and 2 years after that in 1997, they opened Bumpus Harley-Davidson® of Murfreesboro with Tom! Bumpus Harley-Davidson® of Collierville and Bumpus Harley-Davidson® Lynchburg were added later. The Bumpuses take the term “family of dealerships” to a whole new level. This year is the 20th anniversary of Bumpus Harley-Davidson® of Murfreesboro. Over the last 20 years Tom Bumpus and his staff have

There were food trucks and lots of vendors on site and a bunch of really cool bikes in all of the bike show classes so I’m sure the judging wasn’t easy. Kathy and her events crew always put on great events and this one was no different. Congratulations Tom and Angie Bumpus and the entire Bumpus family on 20 years of making HarleyDavidson® dreams come true in Murfreesboro TN!

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: As you read this I’m sure you will be basking in the warmth of a great Labor Day weekend or recounting the fun you had with family and friends. September is also the month of National Prisoner of War and Missing in Action Recognition Day. This is an annual day of recognition meant to remember those who have become American Prisoners of War and those still Missing in Action. There are still over 82,000 American’s listed officially as missing in action from World War Two until today. As I talk to veteran’s organizations, public groups and those interested in the POW/MIA story I’m amazed at how many people don’t know we still have Americans who are not accounted for, let alone such an enormous number. 82,000+ pails though when you consider the number of people affected. For the approximately 76,000 who remain missing from World War Two we have to consider their families have gone through 4 or 5 generations. They had fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors and school friends. Many had jobs when called to service, so you also have to consider co-workers and bosses. The postal delivery people knew them as did the folks at church, their doctors, nurses, waitresses and on and on. It’s not hard to imagine that a couple of million people have been and are still affected by their loss without answers. Our government is only averaging 160 recoveries and identifications per year. What a pitiful effort for the sacrifice!! Imagine how different your life would be if your father, brother or cousin went to war for your freedom and just disappeared and all you got were stories of what might have happened but no factual recount of the incident with accompanying remains that could be buried. What about Korea and Vietnam where intelligence experts pointed to as many as 8,000 Korean War prisoners and 1300 Vietnam War prisoners thought to be alive in captivity who were never returned. We know that approximately 23,000 Americans were taken by Stalin at the end of WWII. Truman and Eisenhower abandoned them rather than go to war with Russia. Stalin took them to the Gulags and they never came home. On top of those left behind our government claimed nobody has been abandoned and for the last 77 years has killed them on paper and attempted to cover over their fate. Their files remain classified still today.

I’m sure most of you recognize the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flag. It is the only national ensign approved by Congress other than the American Stars and Stripes. There are 7 days of the year when the POW/MIA flag is mandated to be displayed just below the American Flag. One of those days is the third Friday of September also known as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Many municipalities, businesses and citizens choose to respectfully fly it year around to remember the missing. The family members of the missing still hope for answers. Today, the family organizations and a few activist organizations like Honor, Release, Return, Inc. are about all that is left of those who actively work for a complete, and in our lifetime, accounting for the missing by our government. Honor, Release, Return, Inc. is the parent organization that holds an event called “The Ride Home.” This national event is held in Georgia close to the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia. This year the three-day event will be held around Warner Robbins and Perry, Georgia. You can learn more at www.theridehome.com. The event is free to the public except for the banquet on Friday evening. Members of veteran’s organizations, veteran motorcycle groups, veterans and just great people raise money through the year to sponsor attendance by former prisoners of war and the family members of those still missing. Sponsoring one POW or family member costs $375. They are the honored guests. Guests cover the cost of their transportation to the event but the sponsorships cover their rooms, meals and transportation during the event. The public is invited to attend and participate in everything. There are socials, honors ceremonies, remembrance services, dedications and a wonderful banquet. A new special medal is struck each year and volunteers present and hang the medal around an honored guest’s neck. Maybe you would like to be that volunteer! You can break bread with and meet these very special Americans. You can learn more about the POW issue at www.honorreleasereturn.com. It’s never too late to make a difference. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. BIKE OF THE MONTH

2017 HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET GLIDE Congratulations to Don Cornelius on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! My name is Don Cornelius. I live in Winchester, TN. I have been around and owned motorcycles just about all my life. My passion for motorcycles started at an early age. My dad introduced me to two wheels. In my first experiences, I remember as a young boy riding with him on his Harley. He bought my brother and me our first motorcycles when we were eight years old; I’ve had the fever ever since. I recently purchased my 2017 Street Glide in February (First Bagger). I chose the Laguna Orange color since it looks awesome in the sunlight. So far, I have upgraded the front wheel to a 21” Rotation Industries Delta Dark Side with matching rotors, 10” Yafee monkey bars with Harley Davidson Defiance grips and Yafee power mirrors. I added TAB Performance slip-ons, Willie G Derby cover and gas console door. The M8 is stock; the power and torque are awesome. Future plans include upgrades to stage one and sinister sound stereo. I enjoy riding with my girlfriend, family and friends through the backroads, mountains, country side, going on long and short distances, or riding long stretches of highways to free the mind and soul. I would like to give a shout out to Jimmy at Juro and Juretta Cycles for urging me to enter my bike in this contest. Thanks to family, friends and everyone who voted and shared the post to give me this opportunity; all the bikes entered were awesome. Owning a street glide has always been a dream; thanks to everyone for the encouragement to pursue and make this reality. Keep your knees in the breeze and remember, four wheels move the body, but two wheels move your soul. See ya down the road, be safe. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com September 2017

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY WELCOMES BAN ON GAS POWERED VEHICLES The Motorcycle Industry Association (U.K.) has welcomed reports of a ban on new fossil fuel-powered vehicles starting 2040, saying it will be a “tremendous stimulus” for bike makers. The Government is due to announce a ban on the sale of new petrol (gasoline) and diesel vehicles from 2040 as part of an effort to tackle air pollution, according to several national newspapers. The measure is expected to include a ban on new hybrid vehicles and “could mark the beginning of the end of the prevalence of the internal combustion engine in automotive transport,” reports www. BritishDealerNews.co.uk. The announcement will be in line with a similar commitment already made by France. Steve Kenward, CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), pointed out that no specific mention had been made of motorcycles but added: “I think there’s a great opportunity.” “For all the congestion-busting abilities of motorcycles and the abilities to make electric bikes I think it’s a tremendous stimulus for the motorcycle industry,” Kenward predicts. “It’s a tremendous commercial trigger to push on with electric motorcycles.” Motorcycles made before 2007 are already set to be hit by a £12.50 ($16.10 USD) daily pollution toll for entering London beginning in 2020. INDIA BECOMES WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER India has dethroned China from a long reign as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, having already overtaken China to become the largest domestic motorcycle market three years ago. The growth curve is continuing, as India’s growing domestic market and partnerships with English and European bike builders have put the country at the forefront of worldwide two-wheeled production. While overall new motorcycle sales in the U.S. have been about 500,000 a year, and around 125,000 are sold in the United Kingdom, the total sales of machines made in India for the last financial year came to 17.6 million – more every three days than are sold in the UK in a year; more every 11 days than are sold annually in America. Meanwhile, China’s domestic motorcycle market has been in decline for five years as government policy has incentivized electric bicycle sales and denied motorcycles access to city centers across China. Conversely, the relentless growth of motorcycle sales in India is beginning to reshape the global marketplace. According to New Atlas, sales within India grew 6.9% last year, thanks to a fast-growing 1.32 billion domestic population that is quickly urbanizing and emerging from poverty -- India has the fastest GDP growth of any major country. A mas30

sive India-wide road construction program is also fueling car and bike sales, just as it did in America a century ago. Currently India’s domestic motorcycle marketplace is dominated by sub-125cc scooters and motorcycles, but larger capacity “luxury” classes are taking an increasing share as the market matures. Royal Enfield, built in India for the past 62 years, sold more than 700,000 motorcycles last year, a figure nearly equal to the combined worldwide sales of Harley-Davidson, KTM, BMW, Triumph, and Ducati, and their production target for this fiscal year is 900,000. MILLIONS OF LICENSED MOTORCYCLISTS DON’T RIDE Nearly 8 million Americans have a motorcycle license, but don’t own a bike. These phantom riders, referred to as “Sleeping License Holders,” have come to the attention of motorcycle manufacturers seeking new customers as baby boomers age out of riding; wanting to wake them up. Many of these ‘sleepers’ were active motorcyclists who had things happen in their life that caused them to quit riding: marriage, kids, financial pressures, a job that demands most of their time or simply a change in interests. Others completed rider training, got their license, but never bought a bike. All of which has led Harley-Davidson, Indian and other bike makers to devise new marketing strategies. Harley has set a goal of attracting 2 million new U.S. riders in the next decade and says it’s committed to introducing 100 new motorcycles over the next 10 years, including an electric bike, and that effort is expected to bring some sleeping license holders into bike ownership. Indian Motorcycle Co. is also digging into why the sleepers aren’t taking that next step to become motorcycle owners. “I think, collectively as an industry, we need to answer that,” said Kevin Reilly, vice president of motorcycle marketing for Indian. The median age of U.S. motorcyclists is about 45, according to a report in Cycle World magazine, with an overwhelming number of new bike buyers over the age of 50. ‘E-DUI’ LAW TARGETS DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ELECTRONICS Washington state has enacted a new ‘E-DUI’ law that imposes stiff penalties for driving under the influence... of electronic devices. Under their new distracted driving law, referred to as “E-DUI,” drivers in the Evergreen State will no longer be able to use a cell phone or any electronic device while driving, even when stopped at a traffic light. The bill was drafted in response to a 32% increase in deaths from distracted driving from 2014 to 2015. “Put the cell phones down, preserve life,” Gov. Jay Inslee said on the steps of the Capitol in Olympia, according to Q13 Fox News. Inslee says the bill is called “electronic driving while impaired” for a reason. “When you are driving with a cell phone, you are a more dangerous driver than if you are driving drunk with a .08 blood alcohol level,” he said. The first citation will cost drivers $136, nearly doubling for a second offense within five years. Tickets issued for driving while using hand-held electronics will go on a motorist’s record and reported to

their insurance provider, says a website set up by the state explaining the new law. In addition, according to the new law, drivers can also get a $99 ticket for other types of distractions like grooming, smoking, eating or reading if it interferes with safe driving and you are pulled over for another traffic offense. NATIONWIDE ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN TO CURB DRINKING AND RIDING A nationwide campaign to crack down on motorcyclists driving drunk or impaired is underway until Labor Day, with local police and Highway Patrol out in force until after the holiday weekend. The end of the summer is universally celebrated by millions of Americans on Labor Day weekend, and for many motorcyclists the weekend is a chance to close down summer with that last long ride. So ride aware that this high-visibility national enforcement campaign, “Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over,” runs from August 18 through September 4, 2017. During this period, local law enforcement will show zero tolerance for alcohol or drug impaired riding. Increased state and national messages about the dangers of riding impaired, coupled with enforcement and increased officers on the road, aim to drastically reduce death and injuries on our nation’s roadways. Anyone caught riding impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. STURGIS-BOUND BIKE-RIDING MUSIC EXECS BECOME HIGHWAY HEROES A group of Music Row power brokers bound for Sturgis from Nashville helped yank 10 people from their cars and trucks Aug. 4, 2017, just before fire raced through the scene of a crash in southern Illinois. A semi-truck had plowed full speed into cars that had stopped for construction on the highway, explains a newspaper article appearing in The Tennessean, causing a chain-reaction eight-car pileup. Just in front of that pileup: A 10-person crew of music industry executives riding bikes from Nashville to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. September 2017

Two of the bikers, brothers from a talent agency who were paramedics for 10 years in San Diego, got in touch with 911 operators and immediately began organizing bystanders, while the amateur rescuers went quickly vehicle by vehicle pulling victims to safety: First, a family of six with children ages 6 to 11; then, a couple of guys in a pick-up truck, one with a bad head wound; finally, a woman, screaming, stuck in a car that looked like a crushed beer can. The Nashvillians couldn’t get her out of the car, so they got about 10 guys together and dragged the entire car, 3 feet at a time, across the highway into a grassy median away from the fire. And like in the movies they did so just before flames ripped through three vehicles that already had been emptied of passengers. “It was a trip. I’m still tripped out by it,” one of the highway saints was quoted as saying in USA Today. “There’s no doubt, had we not sprung into action like we did, there would’ve been fatalities.” ROLLING ADS PROMOTE MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS ACROSS NEBRASKA Eight delivery trucks will carry a motorcycle awareness message for 10 weeks this summer while traversing the Cornhusker State as part of a Nebraska Highway Safety Council campaign. Signs on the delivery trucks’ panels warn motorists to “watch for motorcycles everywhere,” by checking mirrors and looking both ways when at intersections and changing lanes. The state Department of Transportation, law enforcement and motorcycle safety groups created the campaign to counter a spate of fatal accidents. Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek said similar campaigns funded by federal motorcycle safety grants have been used in the past to push awareness. “You want to reach drivers, and this is a way to do it,” Zwonechek told the Journal Star newspaper. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment…and I assure you that I am with you in heart and in hand.” ~ Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest C.S.A., in a Fourth of July speech in Memphis in 1875; today his statue is targeted for removal.

A man appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. ‘Have you ever done anything of particular merit?’ St. Peter asked. ‘Well, I can think of one thing,’ the man offered. ‘On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a group of bikers who were lewdly joking with a young woman, but I couldn’t tell if she flirtingly liked it or was in peril. I was confused. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his eyebrow piercing, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, ‘Now, back off or I’ll kick the living crap out of all of you!’ St. Peter was impressed, ‘When did this happen?’ The man stuck out his chest in pride; ‘Couple of minutes ago.’

She asks the lawyer: “What goes up a mountain with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, perplexed, picks up his laptop and searches all his references — no answer. He searches the net and the library of Congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends emails to all his friends and co-workers but, also, no answer. After an hour, he wakes the blonde and reluctantly hands her $500. “Thank you,” the blonde says, and goes back to sleep some more. The lawyer, annoyed, wakes her up and asks, “Well, what is the answer?” Without a word, she takes her purse, hands him $5. and goes back to sleep. Well played, blondie!

None of the pets seemed to catch her interest, except this ugly frog. As she walked by the jar he was in, she looked and he winked at her. He whispered, I’m so lonely, too. Buy me and take me home... you won’t ever be sorry.’ The older lady figured, what the heck! She hadn’t found anything else. So, she bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat beside her. As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog whispered to her Kiss me and you won’t be sorry!.” So, the older lady figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog. Immediately the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy, young, handsome Prince Charming. The Prince then returned the older lady’s kiss. Suddenly the older lady felt herself transforming from his kiss. Now can you guess what the older lady turned into? She turned into the first motel she could find! She’s older....not fookin’ dead!

A blonde and a lawyer were seating next to each other on a flight. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, so she politely says no and turns to the window for a nap. The lawyer insists and explains that the game is easy and very fun. He explains, “I’m going to ask you a question, and if you do not know the answer, you’ll pay me $5, and vice versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you do not know the answer, you pay me $5. and if I do not know the answer, I pay you $500.” This catches the attention of the blonde and, imagining that there will be no end to this torment unless she makes part of his game, she agrees to play. So, she reluctantly, but with full confidence agrees to his game and his rules. The lawyer asks the first question, “How far is the Earth from the Moon?” The blonde did not say a word, opened her purse, took out a $5 bill and handed it to him. “Okay,” said the lawyer, “it’s your turn to ask.” 32
