Holy Sandusky…what a Bike Week! After a cool and wet start on Friday June 1st, the good Lord blessed us with fabulous weather for the duration of the event. After months and months of preparation, and a grueling ten days of handling logistics and operations, the event organizers are taking a well deserved rest. Hats off to Advantage Entertainment for throwing one heck of a block party in Downtown Sandusky, and for teaming up with Mad River Harley-Davidson to present the Yuengling Concert Pavilion next to the dealership campus. Thunder Roads Ohio would like to express our extreme gratitude to the staff at Margaritaville in Sandusky for their efforts in making the first ever “Thunder Road Zone” during Ohio Bike Week a huge success. Many thanks also to the members of ABATE of Ohio for organizing the bike show, and to Wolfie and his crew for managing the bike parking, ensuring that the thousands of riders that visited Ohio Bike Week’s “Party Central” over the ten days were treated to a well organized, action-packed, biker-friendly event. We were excited to have the Thunder Roads Magazine founders Toni and Brian Shearon (Pictured with me above) in Sandusky for the second weekend of Ohio Bike Week. The impressive Thunder Roads Semi and Trailer parked in front of Mad River Harley-Davidson welcomed riders and distributed copies of Thunder Roads Magazines from several states. Toni and Brian are looking forward to coming back next year as they discovered what the rest of us that live in Ohio know…it’s a great place to ride, full of the best motorcycle enthusiasts around, and a perfect location to host a motorcycle rally. So, life after Bike Week begins and the Thunder Roads Ohio team will be hitting the road throughout the rest of the riding season distributing magazines at Bike Nights and Rallies across the state. I have to admit, that is the favorite part of my job! It’s hard to believe that July is upon us and we will soon be celebrating our great country’s Independence. On page 40 we pay tribute to Sergeant First Class Ronald Rosser, who so bravely fought for our freedom and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean war. Another celebration of our country’s freedom will take place on July 20-22, 2012. The Liberty Aviation Museum located on the grounds of the Port Clinton, Ohio airport, will be hosting its Grand Opening celebration with a weekend jam-packed with special events. The museum will showcase the “Tin Goose Diner” and will be the home for historic military aircraft and vehicles, including a WW2 North American B-25 Mitchell Bomber airplane and a PT-728 boat. See the ad on page 15 for more info on the event or checkout their website at www.libertyaviationmuseum.org. This year’s Rolling Bike Night bike “The Bombshell” will be on display throughout the weekend so be sure to stop in and sign up for a chance to qualify for a key to win it. We are excited to announce that the newly completed museum will also host our Rolling Bike Night grand finale and bike giveaway this year on September 15th. It will be the perfect venue to give away the custom built bike with the bomber airplane themed paint job by airbrush artist Pamela Shanteau. The month of July also brings more chances to qualify to win the bike at three of the Rolling Bike Night Events, which are held every other Tuesday throughout the summer at different venues across North Central Ohio. The event returns to the popular Mason Jar located south of Sandusky on July 3rd, and then moves on to two new venues. Jim Leaser owner of Jimmy Bukkets in Fremont, Ohio has some surprises planned for us when he hosts his first Rolling Bike Night on July 17th. Also new on the circuit this year is Dock’s Beach House in Port Clinton, where we will hold our mid-season event on July 31st. Even if you’re a charity or non-profit, there are costs associated with running your flyer. There are simply far too many charitable events out there and it costs far too much to print this magazine, for us to be able to run ads for free – but we can most likely include you in our event listing at no cost. The first step, though, is to send us your information. From there, we can figure out what works best to meet your specific needs and budget.

Summertime and Riding Season is here! As I write this it’s 90 and the sun is shining - it’s Riding Season in Oh-HI-Oh! It’s the most wonderful time of the year for a biker – especially if he has the pleasure of publishing a motorcycle magazine! We kicked off the season with a few bike nights and bike blessings and then headed straight into the rallies with Ohio Bike Week followed by Rally-In-The-Corn. Ohio Bike Week and our Thunder Roads Zone were great times and not a lot of sleep was had. (See our article in this issue.) Rally-In-The-Corn was a whole different experience as we simply went as an exhibitor – not as a promoter; which meant we had a lot more time to talk and meet new people.

The sheer number of events held each month – in many cases each week and day, prohibit us from being able to cover everything we would like. We have a number of hard working reps and solid contributors, but we are still a relatively small organization. Feel free to invite us out, but just don’t take offense if we can’t make it. You can, however, become a “Thunder Roads Rep For A Day”! Feel free to cover your own event for Thunder Roads and send us some information and pics afterwards. We may be able to feature the event in an upcoming issue or online. The only risk, though, is that we may try to recruit you for other events and possibly other duties with the magazine! But for a good cause and the shameless self promotion of your own events – that may be a risk worth considering. At a recent bike night, I had the opportunity to meet Kurt and Brenda Fogle from Painesville. Besides being really outstanding people, I was intrigued to hear about a unique product they designed and produce – a locking oil cap for Harley-Davidsons! It’s called the Guardian Oil Protector ™ and you can find them online at kbents.com.

No details have been released on the motorcycles, other then that they will first go on sale in August, in conjunction with Sturgis and the show’s fifth season premiere. SOA is the FX’s top-rated show ever and online sales of merchandise have grown about 70 percent year-to-year since 2010, according to producers. This year, however, Fox is shifting their sales focus from online to retail stores such as Spencer Gifts – and apparently Harley dealerships! As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Jeffrey Godsick – President of 20th Century Fox Consumer Products states “there are different audiences buying the products.” “They range from the show’s fan base to people who just like the counter-culture biker attitude – to people who are weekend bikers.” My first question, though, is what bikes are they going to be rolling out? It seems like most of the bikes on the show are older FXR’s – a cult favorite reportedly crafted by Eric Buell, with Ness and Harley quarter fairings. With the FXR’s seemingly evolving into Dyna’s, I’m curious as to how they are going to reach the $25,000 price point? For those SOA fans on a smaller budget or with less empty space in the garage, 20th Century Fox has cut a deal with Maisto to create some die-cast motorcycles themed around the show. The plan is to have mini versions of Jax, Clay, and Opie’s rides available in time for the holiday season. Thunder Run Prize Winners With the Thunder Run underway, the next step is to start awarding the prizes! We had numerous prize winners popping up Thunder Run VIP Prize Winner Joe B, from Sassy’s all over Ohio Bike Week as they sponsored many of the prizes. Thunder Roads had the opportunity to hang with Joe Butano, one of our VIP Prize Package Winners during the Jesse James Dupree (Jackyl, Full Throttle TV) Cancer Ride. Joe registered for the Run at Sassy’s in Twinsburg. We will begin listing the prize winners on both the website and Facebook starting in July. Locking gas caps are standard on many vehicles – not necessarily out of concern over someone siphoning gas but to protect against vandalism. On a motorcycle, however, your oil tank is just as vulnerable – yet, I’ve never seen a locking oil cap before for a Harley. Kurt launched this venture after his Electra Glide locked up on he and his wife while out on a ride. They had just stopped at a small, local restaurant miles from home. They had shared that they were from Cleveland, Ohio. That was it – no apparent problems until they pulled out and were miles from town.

This will not help your engine’s performance.

Their bike started acting funny and then suddenly froze up after some loud noises. They were stranded with a dead bike for no apparent reason! Much later and after a lot of headaches, they got their bike back home to a local shop. The engine was torn down and a filtered cigarette butt was found in the engine! Someone had placed a butt in their oil tank – and the only time that this could have happened was at that little restaurant. Someone had maliciously dropped their cigarette into their oil. They simply popped the cap and dropped it in! The butt (and filter) made it’s way through the system and into the pump, fouling it and ruining it – starving the engine for oil. A few miles later, the engine locked up! That’s all it took. And all it takes to prevent this is a locking oil cap! If you’re a “tell it like it is” kinda guy like me that isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes in – you may want to consider getting one of these for your bike. It’s an unfortunate fact that there a lot of folks out there that would much rather mess with your bike or car – then say what’s on their mind. The TRO Prize Wheel Scavenger Hunt! Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to distracted drivers – such as “Texters”.

Tabasco Thunder Roads Ohio Are you a “texter”? Let’s face it, most of us are. I probably text more than anyone I know. In fact, it’s gotten to the point that I would rather text my own Mother who lives in North Carolina than actually speak to her on the phone. Texting is so much faster and to the point. But as a Biker, we have all been witness to the oblivious drivers’ texting on the highway. They are typically the “left lanners”. You know the ones who linger for miles in the left lane doing either right at or five miles per hour under the posted speed limit. If it’s not texting then it’s talking on the phone. I’m behind someone like this almost every day. They’re cruising at a respectable speed and all of the sudden they drop ten miles per hour for seemingly no reason. Five miles later when they get tired of seeing me in their rear view mirror “questioning their motives” and they finally move over I’m never surprised to see them in a lively conversation on the phone, oblivious to everything around them. This kills Bikers, this Kills Children, and this Kills people in this country every day.

I recently read a story online about an 18 year old kid that was “pummeled” by a bunch of Bikers after having veered into the pack with his Prius while trying to film the large group with his cell phone video camera at highway speeds. It was difficult for me to feel compassion for the kid. This is Ohio, which means almost every one of us rolls in a cage at some point or another. Next time you get that text on your way to or from work, or the grocery store, remember that oblivious driver that you may have given the international “you’re number one” hand gesture to while you were thundering down the highway last weekend on two wheels, don’t be a hypocrite, don’t risk the lives of your fellow riders, and don’t be a “Left Lanner”.

On May 15, 2012 the Ohio House voted 82-12 to approve Senate changes to House Bill 99, making us the 39th state to ratify a statewide ban. The ban on handheld devices for drivers under

the age of 18, including cell phones and tablet computers, would be a primary offense. The bill would allow teen drivers to use voice-activated navigation devices, as long as they’re not handheld. For teens, the punishment for using an electronic device to type or make calls would be a $150 fine and a 60-day license suspension for a first offense. It escalates to a $300 fine and one-year suspension for repeat violations. It now heads to Governor John Kasich who is expected to sign it into law. But for adults it’s still only a secondary offense, which means a driver must be pulled over for another reason in addition to texting. I sure hope that other reason isn’t because they ran you, me or one of our brothers or sisters off the road injuring them or worse.

of the road, waiting for a friend to bring us gas. And hoping that all the bikers that watched him kick that bike, for an hour, did not come by on their way home and see that it was something as simple as running out of gas!

Summer is in full swing and we are all enjoying riding! We all find riding on the back to be fun, exciting and relaxing. But to me, and to some of us, riding can also be an adventure.

There is always a process of tightening the parts before you ride. Parts not working or coming loose can cause us on the back some discomfort. As we were riding one day, my foot peg came loose and flopped down. Until we could stop to tighten it, I had to ride with my leg stretched out. If you ever had to do that you know that is just not right. But, in those situations, you really have to determine how far your destination is and can you make it. Because when you stop, you never know how long it will take to get it going again.

Where I live, I see a lot of bike traffic. Some of our sisters are sitting back; totally relaxed which is exactly the way we should be on the back. For me, riding on the back of an old Shovel, is relaxing and fun but it is also truly an exciting experience. First, there is always the issue of getting her started. With a kick-start, she is on her time and not yours. So, it could be one, three or 16 kicks. This window of time does give you the advantage of not rushing to put your jacket on or giving you time to finish that last drink. You also have to be very observant. Old bikes vibrant which makes for a wonderful ride but it does loosen parts. You have to be ready if something falls off. You have to tell him immediately. And, believe me, he already knows but it does show that you are paying attention. You also are the spotter. Spot where the part fell off so you know how far back he has to go to pick it up. The downside to this is it also means that you don’t always have a lot of room in the saddlebags because extra tools may be required.

If this sounds like a lot of work, it’s not. It’s the love each of us has for the bike we ride. And believe me; if you haven’t had a chance to ride on the back of a shovel, you need to do that at least once in your life. It may sputter to start, but once it’s going, it is the ride of your life! And, I am talking from the back! T H E N AT I O N ’ S L E A D I N G

To get the full impact of riding on the back of an older bike, I think we need some examples. We were at a bike event and riding to a bar when the shifter fell off. I heard it hit the pavement. At the very same time, he said, “We just lost the shifter” and before he finished that statement, we heard “Got it” from the bike behind us. That whole conversation took place in 6 seconds! Always good to have friends that are willing to grab your parts as they fall! Another time, on a very nice ride, the coil wire broke. I don’t know what that is but I learned that day that the bike does not go without it. We stopped under a very nice shaded area along the side of the road and he fixed it. Now, in those situations, it is so hard not to say, “Is there anything I can do?” But don’t say it. You know there is nothing you can do…he knows there is nothing you can do and he is going to be really focused until it’s fixed. And you will always know when it’s fixed because usually the remarks that follow are directed to the bike and not really printable. There are times that we do like to offer some advice. After an overnight camping trip, the bike sputtered and was hard to get started. I finally said in a very subtle but helpful tone, “We do have gas, right?” A dirty look followed and about 20 minutes later, we got her going. About 5 miles down the road, we sputtered to a stop. He actually looked surprised and said, “I think we are out of gas!” So there we were, sitting on the side Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

To all Ohio motorcyclists, On May 9, 2012, the Ohio House Comittee on Transportation and Homeland Security unanimously approved H.B. 316, a bill that changes the restrictions on motorcycle handlebar height and an amendment which makes the new restrictions that handlebars can be no higher than the handgrips are shoulder high while the driver is seated in the saddle. The current law is that handlebars are not permitted to be over 15” from the lowest part of the saddle. The AMA and ABATE of Ohio, Inc. both presented testimony in favor of the bill as amended. The reasons given for support from both organizations is that the current law is out of date, based on the style of motorcycles currently being manufactured. Thirty five other states have updated similar laws, the majority of which have gone to shoulder high restrictions. The other point both organizations used is that a shoulder high restriction allowed for the rider to custom fit the motorcycle to their body size. Now that the bill has passed through committee, the next step is for the bill to be called to the floor of the General Assembly. In order for this to happen, we need to get the bill to the attention of the Speaker of the House, Rep. William Batchelder. His email address is district69@ohr.state.oh.us. If you make a phone call, remember that talking to an aid is the same as talking in person to the Representative. In your communication introduce yourself as a registered voter and a member of an organization, if it applies. Communicate that H.B 316 changes the restrictions on motorcycle handlebars from 15” to shoulder high. Explain that the current law is out of date based on the current trends of motorcycle manufacturing. The most popular model of motorcycle in the world, the Harley Davidson Heritage Soft tail, and the Harley Davidson Police Edition Road King are both illegal under current law. Another point is that the new law allows the rider to custom fit the motorcycle to what the rider will have the most control over. More control for riders should mean safer roads for all. Contacting Rep. Batchelder is the next step. This will get it on the agenda for floor discussion. The next step would be to contact the Ohio House of Representative in your district and ask them to support the bill when it is brought up for discussion. Juneau, Alaska to Prince Rupert, British Columbia to Hyder, Alaska

ather than ride the length of the Alcan Highway for the 4th time I decided to take the ferry through the inside passage, via the Alaska Marine Highway from Haines, Alaska to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. This route would save me 800 road miles and I would be able to view the same scenery as the passengers on the more expensive cruise ships get to see. I arranged the first segment departing Haines and arriving in Juneau for an overnight stay on land. The next leg would depart Juneau on Sunday at 5 pm and arrive in Prince Rupert, British Columbia on Tuesday at 2 PM. Total sea miles from Haines to Prince 16

Rupert would be 669, with short stops at Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell, & Ketchikan. The tariff for the ferry was $160 for a passenger and $212 for a motorcycle. I talked with a rider in Fairbanks who paid $1,400 for round trip passage from Bellingham, Washington to Whittier, Alaska for himself and his bike. For the portion of the trip from Juneau to Prince Rupert, there was a two bed cabin with toilet available for $124. I opted instead for the free solarium area which was located on the top deck near the aft of the ship. The 60’X60’ solarium area is enclosed by windows on 2 sides. The front wall is steel and houses the rest rooms and showers. The aft side is completely open and the entire area is covered with a glass roof. tubes. Reclining chaise lounge chairs were provided and showers were free, but towel rental was $1.00. This entire area was only used by 6 of us.

the duration at sea is over 6 hours, announcements are made every 3 hours to allow passengers access to the car deck to walk pets and enter vehicles. The segment to Juneau took just 4 Â˝ hours arriving at 1:30 PM. The sun was bright and the temperature was around 75 degrees. Juneau, which is the capital of Alaska, is only accessible by air or sea. The road along the shoreline is just 42 miles long. That’s it, nowhere else to go unless you want to venture over “The Bridge”. That is what the locals call it because it is the only bridge in Juneau. It leads over to the town of Douglas with just a few more miles of road to travel on. I was shocked to find the “Harley Dealer” was actually a dealership and not just a t-shirt outlet. The owner claims he sells 40-45 bikes per year. I think his income is still mostly generated from shirts. They advertise that for $140 you can purchase “The Mother Lode of T-shirts” which includes a shirt from each of the 5 Alaska Harley dealers. I rode out to the Mendenhall Glacier and to the Juneau Ice Fields, then rode on to both ends of the 42 mile road. When I arrived back in town I visited the Alaska State Museum. I noticed the state capital building was open for tours. The young man said the next tour will leave in 15

minutes or you can just take the self guided tour. Imagine that! No security check and no X-ray of my bags, just free range access to the entire building. Of course I had to ask where the statue of Sarah Palin was. There wasn’t one but her picture is on the wall with the rest of the past governors. I checked into my room and roamed around town with the rest of the tourists. The next day was cold with a temperature of 55 degrees and light rain lasting until the ferry departure time at 5 pm. My home for the next 2 days was aboard the ship Matanusa, which is part of the Alaska Marine Highway fleet of ferries that are all named after glaciers. This ferry measured 408’ long and 74’ wide, with 7,400 horsepower. It boasts 108 staterooms and has capacity for 500 passengers and 88 vehicles. It was heavily overcast and we experienced light rain for the first 24

hours that ended just as we arrived in the port of Petersburg. This town of 3,000 was established by the Russians and has the highest per capita income of any city in the USA. From there we passed through the Wrangell Narrows, a route the large cruise ships cannot navigate through. This 21 mile long passageway averages ½ mile wide, sometimes as narrow as 300 feet and is only 19 feet deep. During extreme tides sometimes this ship is delayed because of the shallow depth of the channel. This short stretch of channel is marked by over 70 navigational aids. I met and enjoyed the company of numerous other passengers. There was a group traveling on a tour bus that was on its return trip from Alaska to Virginia. The group consisted of 40 vacationers on a 29 day round trip of over 10,000 miles! Another couple from Australia had purchased a 40’ motor home on the internet, flew in, picked it up and then spending the next year touring the USA.

Most interesting to meet though were the locals who were just taking the boat between towns. I struck up a conversation with a local carpenter who was getting off the ferry in the small town of Wrangell. He stated that the only way to leave town is by the ferry or by air, and that only one commercial plane, a 727, comes in and out daily. He said the least expensive ticket is $700 and that is subsidized by the state. I asked “How much does a carpenter make?” He explained about some Alaskan law and prevailing wage rule. A union carpenter makes $50.00 per hour and no benefits, so that’s what all carpenters make. Truck drivers and other laborers make about the same. I asked about medical facilities in his small town, and he told me that they have just started on a new 23 million dollar hospital and just completed a 25 million dollar school. The ferry dock is new and so is the airport which is still subsidized by the state. He said the state gets most of its money from the pipeline and years

ago the one of the Governors invested the income in Australian Kugarands, which has multiplied exponentially. While back in Fairbanks I met the “sound man” from a crew of 4 who were filming a pilot for Discovery Channel. They ended up on this ferry and were doing some on board shooting. Back in Haines, while waiting to board the ferry, a 96 Harley with a sidecar pulled in behind me ridden by a lady in her mid 60’s from Montana. She was on board this ferry as well and a solarium resident too. The film crew came up and interviewed her. All in all it was an enjoyable ride with interesting people. After the 46 hour ferry boat ride from Juneau I was back on land in Prince Rupert, British Columbia about 800 miles north of Seattle, Washington. I stayed in the big blue Prince Rupert Hostel run by a nice young lady about 25 years old. The guidebook says it rains here on average 222 days a year, and it shows. The area is like a rain forest, everything being green. Rocks are covered with moss, ferns and vines. The forests are so dense you can’t see into them. I guess that’s why so many critters are along the highway feeding on the grass and berries. The road out of town is quite beautiful as it runs right along the rivers’ edge. At a lateral distance of 600 feet across from the base of two mountain ranges leys a two lane road, railroad tracks, and the river. That is all you will see along the 92 miles to the town of Terrace. Although on two separate occasions I came across a Mama Black bear with two cubs grazing along the edge of the road. Along the remote 140 mile journey between the towns of Kitwanga and Stewart in British Columbia, is the majestic Bear Glacier that flows down the mountain and into the river which runs along that road. 20

Just two miles past Stewart is the town of Hyder, Alaska. Hyder is unique in that it is landlocked and can only be reached either via private boat through Stewart, BC or by traveling the only road to it out of Canada. Its closest neighboring US cities are Bellingham, Washington 906 miles to the south and Tok, Alaska 1,036 miles to the north. Hyder is a favorite destination to those who want bragging rights for having traveled to Alaska. The population of Hyder is a mere 87, and the residents refer to their town as the “Friendliest Ghost Town in Alaska.” It is just a memory of the mining boomtown it was in its heyday. There are no paved roads in this town, but you will find one General Store, a Post Office, and an old blue school bus that serves fresh fish out of the side window. Your choice for restaurants and taverns are the Glacier Inn and the Sealaska Inn which is also a motel. Knowing that I would be staying there during the high tourist season I reserved a “sleeping room” at the Sealaska Inn for $42. And that’s what I got. A 5x9 room with a single bed, a chair, a nightstand and lamp. The shower and toilet were down the hall. The Glacier Inn begs the tourists to come in and get “Hyderized”. For the price of $4 the barmaid pours out a “mystery shot” (150 proof Ever Clear) from a brown paper bag. Once you slam it down she lights the remaining fumes in the shot glass on fire and presents you with a signed card certifying you have been Hyderized. Silly but it had to be done. Six miles further down the dirt road is the entrance to the observation site operated by the Tongrass National Forest at Fish Creek. There is a 600 foot long raised deck along the creek to allow viewing of the spawning salmon and feeding of the hungry Black Bears, Brown (Grizzly) Bears and Eagles that come to feed upon the salmon in Fish Creek. My first trip to Tongrass National Forest was three years ago during the first week of July when it was too early for bear sightings. This time when I was passing through it was only three days until the end of July. When I spoke with one of the Rangers he told me they had seen only one black bear and one brown bear that day explaining that the salmon were a little late arriving this year. I chatted for awhile with the Ranger about living in Alaska. He confirmed that there is no state sales tax there. He also shared that residents not only don’t have to pay income tax but they receive an annual check from the state! The largest amount ever given per resident was $1,200, and on average every man, woman and child in the state receives $700 to $900. This equates to a family of 4 receiving around $3,500 per year! Salmon Glacier, Canada’s fifth largest, is located twenty-three miles further up the dirt road. The rangers told me it would be obscured by the low clouds so I left Hyder for Prince George in the rain and a temperature of 48 degrees. I was surprised to discover that you can ride from Canada into Hyder, Alaska without stopping. That’s right. No Customs Agents. No Border Patrol. No Homeland Security. You wouldn’t even know you were entering into Alaska except for a welcome sign and the road changing from pavement to dirt and pot holes. A forgotten border crossing which is saving thousands of dollars in government employee’s wages. Leaving Hyder however, there is a Canadian Customs check manned by two agents around the clock. Author’s Note Some one emailed me asking what the red boxes are on the back of my bike. Those are two, one gallon gas tanks. I installed them just before I left home. They lock in place too. My bike only holds 5 gallons and has a range of only 200 miles at best. Sometimes out here that’s not enough and no fuel stations are open 24/7. Between Hyder and Stewart there is but one station. It has 2 pumps both dispensing 87 octane. That’s it. No other stations for 140 miles. Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio

Kamikaze Jump By Julie Roeder

I first met David Rader from Ashland, Ohio during the 1980’s when he was a frequent customer at our Harley-Davidson dealership in Monroeville. Dave owned several other brands of motorcycles prior to buying his first Harley from me, an orange and black 1987 XLH 1100 Evolution 30th Anniversary Sportster. He is pictured with that bike and my late husband Will (right) on the day he picked it up. His first bike was a 1947 500cc Triumph that he bought in 1950 when he was 16 years old. He had several other bikes prior to getting his first H-D including a Penton and a Husqvarna. Dave has owned 6 other Harley-Davidson’s over the years. He wishes he would have hung on to his “Moo Glide”, a 1993 Heritage Nostaligia with real cowhide on the seat and bags because it was a very limited edition. They only made 800 of them and he sold it or $4,000 that he paid for it, so it was hard to pass up. Dave’s current ride is the 2003 100th Anniversary Road King that he also bought from us and has now turned into a trike. 22

I recall Dave coming in and telling us about a little party he was planning on throwing and he wondered if we would help him spread the word about his “Kamikaze Jump” event. It all started back in 1989 when Dave and his buddies gathered together at his farm after a memorial run honoring fellow bikers. Looking for something fun to do, Dave and two other guys that were there that day decided that they would ride motorcycles up a makeshift dirt ramp and jump off into the pond below. Afterward Dave thought “Well that was fun, why don’t we do it again next year?” His buddies all agreed and thus the annual Kamikaze Jump was born.

The Kamikaze Jump’s website describes the event as “a gathering of folks who enjoy a certain zest for life!” I would say that is true of someone who is crazy enough to jump a motorcycle into a pond. Dave reflects that “The early years of the party were simple. We used a wooden ramp and drank cheap beer. Everyone who came enjoyed the day hanging out with fun people and Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

watching the crazy ones jump their motorcycles into the pond. Or was it hanging out with crazy people and watching the fun ones jump? Either way, what could be better than that?” Speaking of crazy people, Dave eventually talked Will into coming down and jumping one of those jap bikes into the pond. I was not there for that event since I had to stay back and mind the store, but I heard the story many times of how hard he landed and that he was knocked silly for a bit. The crowd was starting to get a little nervous and the divers thought they might have to go in and look for him, but he eventually surfaced. It didn’t take long for the word to get out about this unique event. It was commonly heard among the biker community that “You’ve got to go to the Kamikaze Jump Party”. True to the motorcycle culture, everyone began to pitch in and help. Simonson Builders from Ashland came out with a bulldozer and built a dirt ramp right up to the edge of the pond which is still used today. A stage was built for the bands to play on and for the girls to frolic in the lights. Dave used to provide the beer back in the day, but that came to an end when too many people were just dumping it on each other’s heads, which he claims was a waste of perfectly good beer. Dave feels it has now grown into a must see event with each year “bringing more and more shenanigans, we’ll say!” Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio

Crowds have exceeded over 3,000 people, and the event has been featured on the ESPN network. The 23rd Annual Kamikaze Jump will be held this year on July 20th, 21st and 22nd. Dave and his buddies will be there still drinking cheap beer, watching pretty girls and enjoying the weekends’ many events including a bike show, weenie bite contest, bike wash, mechanical bull, ball toss, smoke shows, and slow races. And of course watching the crazy people jump motorcycles, bicycles, lawn tractors, three wheelers, four wheelers, snowmobiles, dune buggies and just about anything else you can think of off of that ramp right into his pond. If you can’t stay for the full 3-days, be sure to be there on Saturday the 21st when the main events will be held. There will be tattoo artists, wood carvers, chainsaw carvers, and many other vendors there throughout the weekend. This year live entertainment will be provided by the Rolling Hams, a favorite of the biker crowd, on both Friday and Saturday night. For more information go to www. kamikazejump.com. With the arrival of summer and our prime riding season, it’s time for many bike owners to unveil their two wheel masterpieces and show them off to fellow riders and enthusiasts. Whether you are developing a chromed cruiser or a blacked out rat bike, it’s easy to invest an amazing amount of time and money into the appearance of your bike. Many are satisfied with simply showing off their ride at bike nights, coffee shops, or riding with friends, but for many the next step is to feature their bike at ride-in bike shows. A ride-in bike show can be as simple as a call for enthusiasts to bring out their rides to a popular riding destination such as a bike night or rally. Many dealerships have begun producing summer bike shows as a means of showcasing what their customers have done with their bikes – or to inspire riders by the potential of what they can do. Ride-In Bike Shows are generally more casual then the indoor winter shows which often showcase custom builders, professionals, and the most hard core enthusiasts. Ride-In shows, such as the ones produced by many dealerships are great opportunities to show off your ride and possibly pick up a trophy / prize money – without going crazy. While the slightest mark on your chrome or dirt on your wheels is taboo at a winter show – it’s

almost expected at a ride-in show. In fact, a spotless bike with an apparently new engine and mirror-like chrome appearing as though it descended directly from heaven – standard fare at an indoor show- is often scoffed at ride-in shows. In fact, it’s not only expected but technically REQUIRED that you ride it in. South East Harley-Davidson’s (Harley) Ferrari Night is usually one of the earlier shows and has grown into one of the best summer bike shows in Northeast Ohio. Like many shows, they have included categories for cars and hot rods. As many gear-heads have a passion for four wheeled rides in addition to their two wheeled steeds, this allows them the opportunity to show off their cars to their riding buddies as well. Century Harley-Davidson in Medina will be hosting their Bike Show on Saturday, July 28th. They award prizes and plaques for 1st -3rd in a variety of classes, including many non-Harley. They make a clear effort to include bikes of all makes and models. Our friends from Cold Blue Steele will be performing – they are a great biker band that really rocks! Hales’s Harley-Davidson in Mansfield is hosting their 27th Annual Bike Show on August 4th making it one of the most established in the state. They have no entry fees and recognize

a variety of classes and winners – including People’s and Dealer’s Choice awards. Thiel’s Wheels in Upper Sandusky has teamed with ABATE to present a Motorcycle Show as part of the 2012 Flag City Balloonfest in Findlay on Saturday, August 11th. Their show has 14 classes, including American/ European, and Japanese/Metric distinctions in 6 classes such as Antique, Touring, Custom, and Everyday Rider. They also have a “Three Wheeled” class for the increasingly popular trikes out there. There are many other summer bike shows and opportunities to get some extra recognition for all the time, energy, and dollars that you’ve invested in creating your “show” bike. In its 11th year, Ohio Bike Week once again kicked off the Midwest riding season with a bang this year – although it did have a slightly different feel this year. For a variety of reasons, the Ohio Bike Week folks opted out of returning to the County Fairground and instead focused on just the downtown block party and Mad River Harley-Davidson campus in Sandusky this year. Faced with the loss of a key location, Thunder Roads Ohio stepped up to the plate and teamed up with Margaritaville to create the MARGARITAVILLE THUNDER ROADS ZONE! The goal was to create an entertaining stop for riders coming to the North Coast as part of Bike Week. Margaritaville is a popular riding destination on the west end of town, conveniently located just off Route 2. Great outdoor patios compliment an indoor restaurant with scenic views of the waterfall and river. Over the past few years, Margaritaville has expanded both their deck and redesigned their parking lot to cater to riders. Two separate stretches of the lot are separated off for motorcycle only parking – a clear priority for the business. Working hand in hand with Margaritaville owner, Bob Crawford, the Thunder Roads team laid out a ring of vendors around the outside of the parking lot and dropped a 30 foot

stage in the midst of the main entrance. Key sponsors – The Coaltion of Freedom and Twisted Tea helped to defray the cost of the stage while organizers worked diligently to manage costs in order to enable riders to attend without a cover charge. The end result was The Margaritaville Thunder Roads Zone – and there was certainly THUNDER throughout the week as the bikes poured in! While high winds and cooler temperatures damped spirits and numbers slightly the first night – things heated up with The Jackie Band from Cleveland the first Saturday. Local favorite The End followed up on Sunday, and the party was in full swing. Bike games, live entertainment, tattoo artists, a variety of vendors and the constant party on the Margaritaville decks kept things hopping for the remainder of the week. The Coalition of Freedom, a group seeking energy independence for Ohio and Constitutional awareness (coalitionoffreedom. com), sponsored Vicious Cycle the second Saturday. This high powered Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band delivered a great performance and really added an exclamation point to the week. Plenty of other great bands graced the Freedom Stage – including The Rock n Roll Outlaws, Sneaky Pete, Beligerant

Chimps, and Turn n’ Cough. One of the most popular performances of the week, though, would certainly be from Joel Starkey from Findley, Ohio. Joel is a very talented 12 year old that has overcome personal challenges that would have sidelined many. He entertained the crowd with several songs as part of the Rock n Roll Outlaws show. [Note – Look for a story on Joel Starkey in an upcoming edition of Thunder Roads.] Thunder Roads also worked hand in hand with other partners, such as ABATE to help launch this first year event. ABATE had a presence throughout the week at Margaritaville and hosted the First Annual ABATE / Thunder Roads Bike Week Bike Show. Throughout the week, The Thunder Zone proved to be the center of activities with appearances by Jesse James Dupree from Jackyl and the Full Throttle TV Show, Jay Allen from Broken Spoke Saloon fame, and “Motorcycle Gypsy” Kevin Bean’re. On Wednesday night, Jesse ended a promotional tour for his new American Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey at the Margaritaville Thunder Zone. He then led a Pancreatic Cancer Benefit Ride back to the Zone on Thursday afternoon

before his Jackyl concert downtown. Thunder Roads also created a presence at the Downtown Block Party and Mad River dealership through booths at both spots as well. Thunder Roads teamed up with the State Theatre downtown and hosted a booth right on Columbus Avenue across from the stage. At the Mad River campus, “THUNDER PETE” – direct from Nashville, TN created a splash right out in front of the dealership. At over 50 feet, this custom Peterbuilt and trailer set the tone and reminded everyone who the Nation’s #1 network of Motorcycle Magazines is. At each location, the Thunder Roads Girls registered riders for their Ohio Ride Cards and explained the Thunder Run program. While they are still tallying the sheets, thousands of Ohio riders signed up for their cards and joined the run. Indeed, it was the clear support of the riding community that made the Margaritaville Thunder Zone a clear success as a part of Ohio Bike Week. An American Hero I

In honor of Independence Day for the July issue of TRO Magazine, I made a trip to the village of Roseville nestled in the rolling hills of south eastern Ohio. With its 2010 Census Population of only 1,852 residents Roseville is much like many other small farm towns that are the stitches in the fabric of this great nation. Once known for it’s sought after ceramics, it also holds another treasure. It is the residence of retired Sergeant First Class Ronald Rosser. Sgt Rosser is one of only 81 living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean War. Sgt Rosser was born in Columbus Ohio on October 24, 1929, but grew up in the Roseville and Crooksville area of Ohio. As a Corporal back on January 12, 1952 during a battle in a heavily fortified hill in Ponggilli Korea, Cpl Rosser exceeded the call of duty. Rosser’s official Medal of Honor citation reads: Cpl. Rosser, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. While assaulting heavily fortified enemy hill positions, Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, was stopped by fierce automatic-weapons, small-arms, artillery, and mortar fire. Cpl. Rosser, a forward observer, was with the lead platoon of Company 40

L when it came under fire from 2 directions. Cpl. Rosser turned his radio over to his assistant and, disregarding the enemy fire, charged the enemy positions armed with only carbine and a grenade. At the first bunker, he silenced its occupants with a burst from his weapon. Gaining the top of the hill, he killed 2 enemy soldiers, and then went down the trench, killing 5 more as he advanced. He then hurled his grenade into a bunker and shot 2 other soldiers as they emerged. Having exhausted his ammunition, he returned through the enemy fire to obtain more ammunition and grenades and charged the hill once more. Calling on others to follow him, he assaulted 2 more enemy bunkers. Although those who attempted to join him became casualties, Cpl. Rosser once again exhausted his ammunition, obtained a new supply, and returning to the hilltop a third time hurled grenades into the enemy positions. During this heroic action Cpl. Rosser single-handedly killed at least 13 of the enemy. After exhausting his ammunition he accompanied the withdrawing platoon, and though himself wounded, made several trips across open terrain still under enemy fire to help remove other men injured more seriously than himself. This outstanding soldier’s courageous and selfless devotion to duty is worthy of emulation by all men. He has contributed magnificently to the high traditions of the military service.

As I parked in front of his home on the narrow village side street on this beautiful sunny Ohio afternoon, I saw an elderly gentleman sitting in his chair on the front porch surrounded by a few lazy cats napping in the shade of the large tree in the yard. The front of the home was decorated with many American flags and banners. He was sitting with his wife and chatting with a neighbor who stopped on his Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Sgt Rosser rose from his chair with the help of his hand carved wooden cane which long ago replaced his trusty rifle and invited me inside. We entered the small living room and through to the adjacent dining room. Both rooms are heavily decorated in many medallions, ribbons, pictures and other keepsakes given to Sgt Rosser in his honor. I made mention how nice the house was and it looked very historical. Sgt Rosser stated that it was over 100 years old, but that the house he grew up in a few miles away was a two story log cabin that was over 250 years old, and had once been the residence of the Indian Agent when Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory, and the farm had been an Indian campground.

TRO: The record states in the battle of that day you personally took out many of the enemy?

TRO: Mr. Rosser, I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me. You mentioned that you have a busy travel schedule. Rosser: Oh I’m glad to. Yes, I leave for Washington D.C. this Friday. I am the honorary guest of Honor at the Army Ball. Then off to Findlay Ohio for an event, then Hawaii later this summer and then Israel to speak. TRO: So you enlisted in the Army at 17 years old? Rosser: Yes, my first three years I spent with the 82nd Airborne. My next tour I ended up as an Instructor at parachute school. Back in 1956 I put a young great big 2nd Lieutenant through training by the name of Norman Schwarzkopf and guy named Colin Powell. I know many that made General. They all know me because I was a mean ass back in the day. (Rosser laughs) TRO: I understand your motivation to enlist was a loss of a Brother? Rosser: Yes, I lost my brother Richard Dale Rosser (19) in Korea. He was killed on a tank Infantry assault by the 5th Calvary Regiment. I also lost another brother Gary Edward Rosser (19) in Vietnam later. I was the oldest boy of 17 children, 9 boys and 8 girls. When my mother was giving birth to the last two at our home my brother and I went to town because women make a lot of noise when they’re having a baby. (Rosser chuckles) Upon our return my sisters called Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio

Rosser: Well, they documented 13, but the Medal of Honor Society credited me with 36, and the Army said it was more like 50. But to be honest, I didn’t count. I know there were 12 that lost their lives in hand to hand combat with me. When they dedicated the Korean War Memorial in D.C. President Clinton said to me “Sgt. Rosser, I understand that you’ve killed a lot of men in hand to hand combat”, and I told him “That’s true Sir, but none of them were my idea”. (Rosser laughs) TRO: You were wounded during this attack but kept fighting? Rosser: Yeah, I got hit twice, once through the shoulder and once through the hand. But they needed help so I just kept fighting. Actually I got hit twice before that day, once on the battle of the Bloody Ridge & once on Heartbreak Ridge. TRO: You’ve seen an incredible amount of action in just a year of heavy combat. Rosser: I lost more comrades that you could ever know. I was an Infantry Forward Observer. The day before Christmas I went out with 73 men into the Iron Triangle, only 6 of us came back alive and I was the only one not wounded. The day of the battle that I got the Medal we went out with 170 of us, we had 90 killed, 12 MIA, and 68 wounded. Every man was killed, injured or missing. TRO: Wow. So the Medal of Honor was presented to you by President Truman? Rosser: Yes. I was 22 years old. He presented to me in the Rose Garden. Actually I’ve been to the White House under every President since Roosevelt. TRO: I’m sure you’ve attended many historic days in history. Rosser: In May of 1958 I was the body bearer for the bodies of the tomb of the unknown soldiers. I am the last surviving member and I presented the flag for the body of the unknown soldier of the Korean War to 41

the then Vice President of the United States Richard Nixon. TRO: To many people Independence Day means picnics and fireworks. What does it mean to you? Rosser: (Sgt Rossers face is now deadpan serious) It means exactly what it says. (Long pause) It’s the military that gives you your independence and your freedom. A long time ago our Forefathers created the Declaration of Independence and over the past hundreds of years, our military makes sure that’s the way it stays. TRO: What is your definition of a patriot today? Rosser: Well, A Patriot to me is a person that cares a lot more for their country than most people and is willing to do anything to

protect this country. Sgt Rosser and I chatted for a few more minutes while he showed me around his home, and his many medals, pictures and mementos. He discussed that there weren’t many like him and that people thought he was crazy because he battled so fiercely, but usually had a smile on his face. “People deal with fear in different ways” he stated. As we exited the house Sgt Rosser eased himself back into his chair on the front porch, cats is tow. I thanked him for his time, and for his service. As I was loading the car he had one final question, this time for me. Rosser: Hey, what make of car is that? TRO: It’s a Chevy. (I was so glad it wasn’t an import)

The two most important components of your motorcycle are your tires and your tires. I think you get my point. Unlike a car or a passenger vehicle, we only have two tires. Making sure that we know all there is to know about these two key elements of your motorcycle, and maintaining them properly is vital. I would like to point out several areas of concern. In addition, we will discuss some steps and procedures to keep these key components performing to the highest safety standards. Tire Types - It is very important to make sure that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mix bias tires with radial tires. Due to differences in the construction of the bias and the radial tires, they will have different abilities to carry side and peripheral forces. For this reason it is very important to make sure that you do not mix the two applications. It is always best to follow manufactures specifications.

Replacement - Along with knowing what type of tire we need, we must always be aware of when we need them. It is very important to make sure you replace your motorcycle tires as they near the 1/32 tread depth range. Anything less is marginal and should be approached with caution. In addition to tread depth, it is important to always inspect your tires for cracks or evidence of dry rotting. If signs of either appear, it is best to replace them immediately. When replacing motorcycle tires it is recommended to replace front and rear at the same time. If one tire is new and the other is worn, it will create an unstable condition. Also, make sure the tires are mounted with the directional arrows pointing in the proper direction. Proper Inflation - Making sure that your motorcycle tires are properly inflated is crucial as well. An over inflated tire can be just as dangerous

Tread Pattern/Compounds - Our tread pattern and tread compound will be determined by our application. For instance, if we are looking for longevity and fuel mileage, a harder rubber compound is needed. On the other hand, if we are looking for a tire to have additional gripping capabilities, we would need a tire of a softer compound. The

softer the rubber, the more grip the tire will have. Keep in mind, this will be at the expense of fuel mileage. Tread pattern is also important and directly relates to your application. If you will be traveling in wet conditions, a good tread pattern is needed to dissipate the water and increase your traction. Make sure you carefully consider your application as you choose your next set of motorcycle tires.

Its critical to properly inflate your tires

In adverse conditions tires can make all the difference

as an under inflated tire. If the tire is under inflated it will build excessive heat, produce uneven tire wear, and perform poorly during cornering. All situations could result in failure of the tire, or damage to the extent that the tire is unable to be used. Over inflation will cause the center of the tread to wear at a more rapid pace and the tire will be more susceptible to damage or puncture. Do not exceed the specifications listed on your tires sidewall and always consult your owners manual for the proper tire pressures. When setting your tire pressure, make sure your tires have been sitting for at least three hours. Never release air pressure from a hot motorcycle tire to reach cold tire inflation specifications.

By following the above guidelines, and paying close attention to your equipment, you can greatly reduce the risk of tire failure on your motorcycle. You only have two tires so treat them with care, maintain them properly, know your application, and always remember how important they are. ROCK ON THE RANGE Hello again folks, It sure has been a busy year for me so far! Weather has been great for riding so I hope you’re able to take advantage of it like I have been. Since I’m being pulled in so many different directions lately and am unable to cover everything I’d like to, I am however lucky enough to have a few tricks up my sleeve! I’ve asked my great friend Chris A. to share with you one of the big concerts that kicks off the summer in Columbus every year. Chances are if you ride, you also like to rock and I recently covered one of the best rock festivals in America, Rock on the Range, held in Columbus, Ohio and our friend Stinger asked me to share a few words about the show with you in his absence! In its sixth year as a festival at Columbus Crew Stadium, “Rock On The Range” once again exceeded expectations with a stellar line up of over 40 diverse rock n’ roll bands. The party kicked off on Friday evening with a “Rock On The Range Friday Night Bash” held at the second stage in the shadow of the main stadium. On Saturday the festival started with a bang as local Columbus rock n roll heroes “Noise Auction” welcomed the masses to the stadium by rocking the Jager Stage with some home grown Ohio music. From that point on for the next 10 hours it would be non-stop rock n’ roll from the festival’s three stages. Headliners for Saturday’s performance on the main stage were Shinedown, Incubus, Slash, Five Finger Deathpunch, Theory Of A Deadman, Halestorm, Chevelle, and Adelita’s Way. Working the second stage was Emphatic, New Medicine, Falling in Reverse, CAVO, P.O.D. And Cypress Hill.

Sunday dawned as another beautiful day, perfect for a rock n’ foll festival and the crowds were out in force in anticipation of a metal-band filled lineup. The second stage was packed with incredible bands and the venue was nearly overflowing with fans. The lineup included: Aranda, Redlight Kings, Trivium, Attack Attack, Down and Anthrax. Inside the bowl at Columbus Crew Stadium, the main stage bands continued the hard-driving standard set by the second stage acts. Featured on the big stage were; Black Stone Cherry, Escape The Fate, The Darkness, Volbeat, Mastodon, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. Each year Rock on the Range gives the fans an incredible experience of rock n roll in a great environment that’s worth the pricetag for such a mass of music. The BTR is a state-wide, summer-long riding contest hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag Thunder Roads Ohio with the support of Motoreagles.com and Rider Insurance. It is a riding contest like no-other and features great prizes and cash pay-outs every month!

We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.

The 1st Annual Stormy Ray Benefit June 16, 2012 The 1st annual Stormy Ray benefit run was a great success!! Stormy and the rest of the family cant begin to put into words how grateful all of us are to the support the whole community has shown Stormy. There was 178 registered riders for the 108mile ride. The $6,800 raised has already been put to great use!! The first $5200 was used to buy a piece of equipment that Storm was in need of. For every ten mins she uses this machine it will be like a hour of strength training. The rest will be applied to a loan that was takin out in May for a $17,000 piece of medical equipment!! Storm is looking forward to using funds raised at next years event to help someone else! Remember to mark your calendars for the Saturday of fathers day weekend June 15th 2013 for the Team Stormys benefit run!!! Thanks again to each of you, you have all touched our hearts forever!! Bikers for the Battle June 9. 2012 The first annual Bikers for the Battle bike run was hosted by the Marion Regional Cancer Centersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Relay For Life team. This fundraising event had a wonderful turnout and beautiful weather. The money we raised this year went to the American Cancer Society. They offer programs for cancer patients nationally such as Look Good...Feel Better, Road to Recovery and Hope Lodge. We had such a great time this year, plans are in the works already for the run next year. We want to thank all of those who came out and supported our cause. See ya next year!!

8th Annual Brandy Winfield Memorial Run June 2, 2012

The 8th Annual Brandy Winfield Memorial Run was a great success this year with over 500 bikes & 1000 people showing their support for the two things he supported most, Law Enforcement & Children. While the final totals are not complete, we expect to donate $12000-$14000. Thanks to the hard work of the Board of Directors the ride in memory of Marion County Deputy Sheriff Brandy Winfield will have distributed over $130,000 over the last 8 years to worthwhile causes the continue to support our community & children. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their hard work and a big thank you to all of the supports. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you next year on June 1st.

Court House Customs We built this project for a guy that wanted the bike to have an over all Irish type theme. Outside of that, he wanted a polished aluminum rear fender and the rests he left up to us. We started the project by cutting up the 100th anniversary frame and installed a Led Sled weld on hardtail.

The customer already had a springer front end and we decided to keep the stock width rear tire so that completed the rolling chassis. We mounted a dished Sportster tank, Frisco style to the backbone of the frame. We made a dual exhaust system that brought the front pipe to the left side of the bike instead of having them both come out on the right side. CHC handlebars, oil tank, air bag seat, powder coating and engraving were also part of the plan from the beginning.

Even though we had an over all vision for the bike, it wasn’t until late in the build that we actually decided to go with the green and gold color scheme. Given that it was an Irish themed bike, the two colors seemed to be an obvious choice. The gold is a powder coat with a clear top coat done in house. The green and the Celtic graphics were done by Sinners-N-Saints. The pegs were provided by our good friends at MotoRod Design.

Your Steering Ways How many ways can you steer a motorcycle? Let us count the ways. That sounds to much like a poem about love I once heard. But since our love here is riding, lets talk about our “steering ways.” Basically there’s four ways to steer a motorcycle. Two are taught in motorcycle classes, and the other two may be mentioned during class but not taught. Three of these “steering ways” you probably performed on your bicycle as a kid, even if you didn’t realize it at the time. Steering a motorcycle is achieved by 1.) Active steering 2.) Counter steering 3.) Body steering, and 4.) Throttle steering. Lets see how effective each way is and when to use them.

THROTTLE STEERING: Throttle steering is not known by many riders unless they’ve had advanced training or read about it. Have you ever noticed that, while riding in a left curve, if you increase the throttle and not maintain the pressure on the left hand grip the bike will tend to steer more to the right, or try to straighten.

ACTIVE STEERING: active steering is only used during slow maneuvers, generally at speeds lower than 12-15 MPH. We are actively turning the handlebars to turn as in turning from a stop a doing a tight U-turn. Going through a slow cone weave would require active steering. COUNTER STEERING: Counter steering is used above 12-15 MPH. Above 15 MPH if you press forward on the right handgrip the bike will turn to the right. Press right go right, press left go left. Counter steering is a very important skill to master. At lower speeds it can be safer to swerve around an object as opposed to trying to stop. Swerving is nothing more than counter steering quickly, pressing right to counter steer, or swerve, around the object (to the right) and pressing left to straighten the bike to continue going straight. The first press will initiate which way your going around the object and the second press straightens out your path of travel. If your going through a curve and you need to tighten up your cornering line, the safest way is to smoothly press the handgrip in the direction of the turn. BODY STEERING: Body steering isn’t the most effective way to steer

a motorcycle. Its actually the worst and usually a waist of time and energy. With the time and effort it takes to lean your body to the right, to get the bike to lean to the right and therefore turn to the right, you could’ve accomplished the same thing quicker, easier, and smoother by simply pressing the right hand grip forward and your done. Its also harder to stay as “one” with your motorcycle when your leaning back and forth with your body.

The opposite is true. In the same curve, if you decrease throttle the bike tends to turn harder to the left. This is throttle steering. By very smooth operation of your throttle you can either tighten up the turn, (smooth decrease in throttle) or widen the turn, (smooth increase in throttle). WARNING: Throttle steering should only be used by experienced riders with very good throttle control. If your leaned over in a fast curve your using up a lot of traction. Decreasing your throttle to quickly or too much will cause engine braking which could cause your tires to loose traction and slide out into a “low side.” That’s the main inputs to steering our motorcycles. I can think of another way to turn a bike or change lanes, and that’s from a strong wind. But that’s another story. Get out and practice and then take a ride. -Ride Safe

ALL AMERICAN K.I.S.S. COUNTRY RIBS 2 Pkgs. of Large, Thick, Country Ribs (8 to a pkg.) Just one pack if cooking for two. 2 Small & Squat Containers of Grill Mates (brand name) Applewood Dry Rub for Pork. *This is a nationwide brand product. 2 Bottles of John Boy & Billy’s Grillin’ Sauce (this product is all over Southern stores; but you can order on-line or use your favorite sauce) 1 Gallon Bottle of Mulled Apple Cider w/ 1/4 cup of Liquid Smoke added. 1 Box of Long Width, Heavy-Duty Aluminum Foil Soak the ribs in a bowl big enough to hold all the ribs, and pour the gallon of apple cider over to cover completely. Let soak for 1 hour in fridge. Next, remove them from fridge, and dry off with a clean dish towel. On a large sheet pan, pour out containers of Applewood Rub and make sure you coat each rib thoroughly on all sides. When all ribs are rubbed, cover with Glad* Press n’ Seal and place in fridge over night. Get a x-large skillet screaming hot over medium-high heat, then run extra-virgin olive oil all around the pan while adding a whalloping tablespoon of butter to the pan. Braise well on all sides until each are a deep, golden brown. You’ll have to braise in several batches. Get your grill HOT!!; whether propane or electric. Lay out douple layers of aluminum foil, again, you’ll need to make apprx. 3 bundles of foiled ribs. Pour Grillin’ Sauce all over every bundle and mix around with your hands and get in there and make sure every single rib is well soaked in sauce. Wrap that bundle up tight as can be and place on grill, turn down to medium-low and let go for 3 hours.......slow and steady as she goes. When you remove from grill, let each pouch sit for apprx. 10 minutes before opening up. These are the most succulent, tender, flavorful ribs you’ll ever taste. Full of juice and flava’. Baby.....it just don’t get better than a juicy country rib that you bite into and sauce just runs down the corner of your mouth and you actually slurp on it and smack your lips! Now..... that’s BBQ Ribs the KISS way! Slurp On!

LEMON-BASIL PARMESAN BUTTER BORN ON THE COB OF JULY 4 Piping hot, cooked ears of corn on the cob (or 8 or 10.....as many as you need) 1 Long, narrow bowl of melted butter or a highquality margarine such as “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” 2 Tablespoons Dried Basil (rub it between your hands to bring it back to life and get all the flavor you can from it) * If using fresh Basil, chop up 4 leaves 1 tsp. of lemon zest 1/2 Cup of Finely Grated Parmesan Cheese Combine the hot melted butter or margarine with the basil and zest. Sprinkle each ear generously with grated cheese and serve hot, hot, hot! Truly cob-a-licious! THUNDER ROADS RED, WHITE & BLUE LEMON CREAM ANGEL CAKE 1 Round, Pre-made Angel Cake; cut into cubes 2 tsp. of Lemon Zest (get 2 fresh lemons) 1/2 Cup of Ice-Cold Heavy Cream; slowly add more if needed 2 Cups of Confectioner’s Sugar 1 Good Dash of Pure Vanilla Extract (1 Tbls.) 1 Gallon of Your Favorite Homemade Tasting Pure Vanilla Ice Cream; put in large bowl, melt down completely and then put in fridge to keep cold 2 Cups of Fresh Blueberries; washed & drained 2 Cups of Fresh Cherries; de-stemmed, pitted, washed & drained. Please both fruits in a bowl in refrigerator, and sprinkle 1/4 cup of sugar over top. In a medium glass bowl, add your confectioner’s sugar, heavy cream and vanilla. Start out slow on your hand mixer, then beat on high until stiff peaks form. Do not overbeat or it will just stay flat and never peak. Layer cake cubes in low, wide dessert bowls. Take your fruit from fridge and slightly smush up a bit to create a sauce. Pour over Angel Cake cubes, drizzle with cold, melted ice-cream and top with cold, homemade whipped cream. THE BIKER A biker stops by the Harley Shop to have his bike fixed. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he said he didn’t live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and an anvil. He stopped by the feed store / livestock dealer and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, he now had a problem: how to carry all of his purchases home.

who told him she was lost. She asked, “Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?” The biker said, “Well, as a matter of fact, I live at 1616 Mockingbird Lane. Let’s take my short cut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.” The little old lady looked him over cautiously and then said, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and ravish me?”

The owner said, “Why don’t you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?”

The biker said, “Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?”

“Hey, thanks”, the biker said, and out the door he went.

The lady said, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket, and I’ll hold the chickens.”

But in the parking lot he was approached by a little old lady
