The month of April has been a whirlwind of activity as we prepare for Ohio Bike Week, the biggest motorcycle event in the Midwest. And we are proud to provide you the May issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. It’s the Official Rally Guide! You can feel the excitement building as the Ohio Bike Week committee continues to announce more events and activities to entertain the riders coming into town. Look to see national acts; Seven Mary Three, Jackyl and Saliva in Sandusky on weekends one and two and Vince Neil in Toledo at Toledo Harley Davidson. The hub of activities on the first weekend will be at the new Yuengling Concert Pavilion and Mad River Saloon, just north of the Mad River Harley-Davidson Dealership on Route 250 in Sandusky. The band Seven Mary Three will be headlining the stage there on the first Saturday. (See ad page 66). Make sure to stop in Mad River Harley for up to date information on the daily rides and schedule of events, where you can also purchase your All Access Pass (See ad page 62) and official Ohio Bike Week Merchandise. The daily rides, include the Winery Ride, the Marblehead Peninsula Ride, The Mansfield Prison Ride and the Get your Kicks on Rt. 6 tour. All are designed to lead rally attendees around to all the great spots along the Ohio’s North Coast. One of the all time favorite rides during Ohio Bike Week heads south to Mansfield for a tour of the Ohio State Reformatory, which is where the movie “Shawshank Redemption” was filmed. Hale’s Harley-Davidson located just down the road from the Reformatory (on Harrington Memorial Road) will be hosting lunch on this ride. While you’re there you might want to check out their famous “Room with a View” Prison T-Shirts. Also new this year is the Thunder Roads Passport Ride. Register for the ride at the Thunder Roads Zone Headquarters located at Margaritaville (located on Route 6 just North of Route 2) in Sandusky. Get your passport stamped at participating riding destinations throughout the ten days of Bike Week to win daily prizes. See more details on page 63. While at Daytona Bike Week in March, I ran into Jay Allen (picture above/below). Jay brought the Broken Spoke Saloon to Ohio Bike Week for several years in the past. He returns to Ohio this year to host the Downtown Sandusky festivities on the second weekend. I got to experience the “Jay Allen Road Show” first-hand at the Boot Hill Saloon on Main Street in Daytona. Check out my interview with Jay on page 14. The Downtown Sandusky activities will kick off on Thursday with the band “Jackyl” performing at a free concert on the Columbus Avenue Main Stage. Jackyl’s lead singer Jesse James Dupree will be leading the Pancreatic Cancer Benefit Run, which leaves Mad River HarleyDavidson at 10am on Thursday, June 7th. (See the Thunder Roads Ohio interview with Jesse on page ??). As Michael Ballard’s partner, Dupree is also well known celebrity through True TV’s “Full Throttle Saloon” show. Join Jesse and Jay Allen for this scenic ride around the Marblehead Peninsula with a stop at the Historic Mon Ami Winery for lunch. The All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) is celebrating its 35th Anniversary of bringing you the FASTEST Nitro Harleys in the world! Many will be screaming down the track at over 200 miles per hour! The Ohio Bike Week Nationals are being held on June 9th and 10th at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio one of the finest drag racing complexes in the country. This event is always a crowd pleaser that you should not miss and is brought to you by the Northern Ohio Harley Dealers. (See ad on page 70) Thunder Roads of Ohio and the Ohio Bike Week Committee would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the event Sponsors, Rally Guide Advertisers, Perkins Township, the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Visitors Bureau and the City of Sandusky or their generous support! From the great riding, the free concerts, exciting races and the areas attractions amid Ohio’s Vacationland, there will not be a lack of things for the rally attendees to do. So let’s all get ready to RIDE’ ON, ROCK ON, AND RACE ON!

The Iron Cowboy It’s that time of year, as evidenced by the cover of our magazine - it’s time for Ohio Bike Week! As Jesse James Dupree (from the band Jackyl and TV’s Full Throttle Saloon) pointed out “This is a Rally by Ohioans for Ohioans”. As a biker from Ohio, this is an institution. I enjoy going to Daytona and Sturgis, but some years I miss because I’m just too busy. Ohio Bike Week is a few hours away, easily accessible for just a day or two at a time; if need be. If you have never been to Ohio Bike Week, I would like to cordially invite you to join us for a week of “Ridin’ Rockin’ and Racin’” along with plenty of good old fashioned biker camaraderie. That’s the real reason I love these events. It’s the sense of instant brotherhood that you form with someone that has a passion for riding. You share a secret and a thus a bond with these otherwise total strangers. It comes from the knowledge that you can jump on this two wheeled machine and ride off down the open road - and escape the otherwise stifling confines of today’s society and routine. You are able to “fly’ down the open road and transform yourself... cleansing your soul. It’s a release. You know it - and they know it. So when you walk into The Cabbage Patch in Daytona, or Margaritaville in Sandusky, you can look a fellow rider in the eye and just give him that “nod”. That “nod” that acknowledges that you understand. (The “nod” that makes my old lady laugh everytime she witnesses it - yes, maybe it’s a guy thing. I have no doubt, though, that women have something similar.) Ok, so maybe I’m getting a bit carried away - but you’ll have that now and then. If you have the riding “bug” - a passion for getting out and just flying over the roads with no destination in mind; well then you know what I’m talking about. Rallies are a celebration of that spirit. They are an opportunity to hang with kindred spirits and just enjoy life. Ohio Bike Week offers all of that - along with an opportunity to catch up with friends from across the state. If you attend different rallies or would ride more then an hour for a favorite biker bar, chances are that you have folks that you just consider “friends on the road”. If they’re from Ohio - chances are that they attend Ohio Bike Week. Ohio Bike Week is rated at having more then 150,000 riders in attendance which makes it the largest motorcycle event in the Midwest and it’s for good reason! From scenic rides along the coast or to the islands- to the All Harley Drags - there is something for everyone. This issue contains the complete schedule of Ohio Bike Week events and locations as we go to press. However, Ohio Bike Week - as with most events of this nature - is a dynamic beast. It is constantly growing as new venues and opportunities evolve. So our best advice to you is to get ingrained with the event and those attending. Check out the
website (ohiobikeweek.com) and the Facebook pages (facebook. com/ohiobikeweek) for updates. THUNDER ROADS PRESENTS THE MARGARITAVILLE THUNDER ZONE For 2012, Thunder Roads has teamed up with Margaritaville in order to create a party destination like no other for Ohio Bike Week. Working with our friends at Margaritavile and the Ohio Bike Week crew, we have developed a full schedule of activities including incredible great live entertainment - such as THE END, THE JACKIE BAND, and THE SOA BAND! If you haven’t heard of the Sons of Anarchy (the band not the show) they are modern rock band that takes a “biker” approach. Expect to see the ladies dancing (and dudes that do that sort of thing) up front and on stage - alongside Billy Morris and Dave Brooks (from Cleveland’s Breakfast Club)! Thunder Roads will also be shooting bikes and models for the magazine at Margaritaville. If you are interested in working with professional photographers and showcasing your bike - or yourself, shoot us an email for more information and to schedule a time. RHS Photography will also be scheduling professional shoots throughout the week, and you can contact them directly at rhsimages@gmail.com. If you’ve invested in the appearance of your bike - why wouldn’t you want some professional pics of your rolling artistic creation? THUNDER ROADS WELCOMES RIDER INSURANCE AND MOTOREAGLES.COM AS 2012 THUNDER RUN PRIMARY SPONSORS As we launch our Thunder Roads Ride n’ Win contest – The 2012 Buckeye Thunder Run, we would like to thank Rider Insurance and the attorneys with Motoreagles.com for helping us to bring this project to launch. As we designed the contest, we wanted to make certain that the focus was on the riders and stops. Our sponsors have allowed us to create a fun run with great prizes and a limited number of stops. Other supporting sponsors will added throughout the summer as we introduce new prizes and aspects of the program. Ohio Bike Week is sponsoring the primary prizes for May and we already have a number of very cool prizes lined up for upcoming months. We will be introducing new prizes throughout the summer - building each month. We want to keep some suspense and excitement, but I can share a little. We have at least a couple of motorcycles - each fully customized rides that we would be proud to feature in this magazine that will be awarded to ride participants; and we have MORE then a little cash lined up.
RIDER INSURANCE PROMOTES MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH Rider Insurance is joining with federal, state and local highway safety, law enforcement and motorcycle organizations in proclaiming May as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month”. By increasing education and awareness of the importance of safe riding and the need for mutual respect for all motorcyclists and motorists, we can continue in our efforts to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on the highways and back roads nationwide. With motorcycles fatalities on the rise, it is important to remember that motorcyclists are more vulnerable than those in other types of vehicles. Motorists should always look for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections and avoid distractions such as texting. It is just as important that riders be visible to other motorists, obtain proper training and licensing, wear the appropriate protective gear, and always respect the rules of the road. In recognition and support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Rider Insurance will be running daily promotions of Facebook during the month of May, including hundreds of dollars a day in motorcycle safety apparel and motorcycle training courses. The promotion will kick off at 10 am on Tuesday May 1, 2012 and everyone who “likes” Rider Insurance’s page on Facebook is eligible to participate. Details can be found on the Rider Insurance website, rider.com and on the Rider Insurance Facebook page, facebook.com/ RiderInsuranceCompany. Rider will continue to have “Watch for Motorcycles” decals and reflective helmet stickers available at the Rider booth at various motorcycle events and motorcycle dealerships events throughout DE, IN, MD, NJ, OH, PA, and WV free of charge. For event locations, go to rider.com/motorcycle_community/ motorcycle-events.html. In addition to direct promotions, Rider will continue to support other individuals and organizations in their efforts to promote safety awareness through the Rider Insurance Bleiwise Family Foundation and general corporate donations and sponsorships throughout the riding season. If you are planning a motorcycle safety awareness event, please contact events@rider.com for more information!

Baby Bear Blurb As always I’m looking for great events to work with and list for Thunder Roads each month. This year we are lucky enough to be apart of the 8th Annual Brandy Winfield Memorial Poker Run. This event is held every year on the first Saturday in June (June 2, 2012) in honor of the fallen Marion County Deputy Sheriff, Brandy Winfield. Long time good friend Chris Sanders was nice enough to give me a few minutes of his time to tell me about Brandy and the event this year. Brandy was shot & killed October 14, 2004 in the line of duty leaving behind his wife and two young children. Always a great guy, with a long history of law enforcement in his family, Brandy did a lot more than his job really required of him to help the community before he died at the young age of 29. This year’s run will mark the 8th Anniversary of when he passed. This memorial ride has drawn an average of 700-900 bikers a year. Riders can register at the Coliseum at Marion County Fairgrounds starting at 9am and bikes are out at noon. This year’s ride will be similar to last year’s keeping with the tradition and family oriented. The ride will once again be escorted and will make stops including but not limited to the sheriff’s office, cemetery, and the spot just North of Waldo where Brandy’s cruiser was found. Dinner will be served back at the grounds when the ride concludes and is included in the run price of $20/single or $25/double. There will also be a live band, beer garden, door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. For more information please visit www.brandywinfieldrun.org. 7

he annual migration of us snow birds to Daytona Bike Week is an event we look forward to all winter long. The camaraderie of hanging out all week with my riding buddies from back home makes this trip one of the most enjoyable of the year. We always make sure to hit the typical destinations such as Main Street, Beach Street, and Destination Daytona HarleyDavidson. But the real fun comes when hitting those little out of the way places, where there is always something going on. My good friend Rick Rogers from Fremont, Ohio is a former resident of Saint Augustine, Florida and has spent many years rooting around the Northeastern part of the state. So on a couple different days during Bike Week this year, we hooked up with Ricky and his gang to see what we could get into.
Tradewinds Lounge St. Augustine, Florida
The first Saturday of Bike Week is usually reserved for a ride up to St. Augustine where Rick is definitely well known around town. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States. History comes alive in red-brick lanes leading to centuries-old churches, in forts where soldiers still walk the grounds, and on horse-drawn carriage rides through time. There is unparalleled shopping in the heart of St. Augustine with art galleries, antiques stores, resort boutiques, upscale shops, and gourmet foods. When Rick walks into the Tradewinds Lounge it’s like walking into Cheers with “Norm”. Everybody knows his name. While there we were treated to entertainment by Rick’s buddy Mark Hart, who was raised in Columbus, OH. Mark has been a house band at the Tradewinds since 1996, and soon had us toasting and singing along with him to his signature lyrics “This is the drinking part of this song!.” The Tradewinds touts itself as “The Oldest Bar in the Oldest City”. It was opened in 1945 under the name of the South 10

Seas Lounge. It has changed hands and locations over the years, but now resides at 124 Charlotte Street. If you are looking for good music and good times, with its tropical atmosphere and its location right on the bay of St. Augustine adjacent to the Bridge of Lions, Tradewinds Lounge is definitely your port of call.
Cheyenne Saloon East Palatka, Florida
Later on in the week we saddled up and rode out to the Cheyenne Saloon, which has come to be known as “Little Daytona in the Country”. The Cheyenne Saloon is a full liquor bar and grill that is geared with the motorcycle rider in mind but all are welcome. It sets on the South bound lane of Hwy. 17/100 in East Palatka, Florida. The Cheyenne has the perfect facilities for and is a popular stop for some of the largest bike runs in the area with ample room for hundreds of bikes. The walls on the inside of the bar are filled with unique memorabilia and provides interesting viewing while grabbing lunch or having a few refreshments. I got a big kick out of the toilet seat hanging on the wall that read “Asshole of the Day” on the lid. When you lifted the lid there was a mirror inside, which in turn gives yourself that honor of the day! To get to the pool tables in the back room, you walk through the doors from an old jail cell, providing a comical photo opportunity. The casual atmosphere of the outside bar area amid a wooded lot, provides a great place to ride to and just hang out with good friends. Named the Outback Bar, it is open on weekends at 10 am till ? (weather permitting). And the crowd really gets going when there is live entertainment on the “Damned Ole Opry” outside stage. The Cheyenne boasts a diverse menu from Steamed Shrimp and Raw Oysters, Wings and Sandwiches, to an all you can eat Breakfast Buffet Bar for $6.25 every Sunday. Now that Daytona Bike Week has come and gone, I’m already looking forward to see what roads Rick will lead us down next year! 11

had a chance to catch up with my old friend Jay Allen recently. Jay owned the Broken Spoke Saloon in Sturgis and then took it on the road to become one of the biggest brands in the biker bar biz. Jay has taken a new direction in recent years and we look forward to seeing him at Ohio Bike Week on the North Coast of Ohio. The Jay Allen Road Show will land at Ohio Bike Week and Jay will be hosting the antics on the Main Stage and the Jack Daniels Barrel House Saloon in Downtown Sandusky during the final weekend festivities.
readership toward your events?
TRO: How many years were you at OBW with the Broken Spoke Saloon? Jay Allen: I spent two years at Ohio Bike Week which were some of the funnest years I’ve ever had doing rallies. And I don’t think there is anybody that attends more rallies than me. And I don’t say that bragging, but I think I am one of the hardest working guys out there, I love what I do. And Ohio was special, it really was. TRO: Well that’s great to hear. When you first got to Ohio what was your impression of the area and of the riding here? Jay Allen: First off, I’m all about tradition and history. Roeder H-D which I hear now is not there had such deep seated history in both land speed and flat track racing. And ya’ know to go there on behalf of and being a part of Roeder’s was amazing. But they also treated me so good, I felt so special coming to Ohio. Once I got there, I saw their vision and what they wanted to do with this event on Ohio’s North Coast. And just so you know, at the Broken Spoke we always had a map on the wall that you could stick your pin in on the location where you lived. And when we looked at that map at the end of the rally, we had over $800 in quilting pins on it, and guess where the heart of the country comes from to Sturgis? It’s from the Midwest, and a large portion of that is from the Ohio region. TRO: I joined you on a few rides during 14
I see so many of them
Bike Week in the past. I especially remember the time we rode around the Marblehead Peninsula on the Bike Builders Charity Ride, ending up over at Put-in-Bay. Jay Allen: Oh yeah the riding on the along the shoreline of Lake Erie is unbelievable. To do the Marblehead Peninsula, and take your bike over to Kelley’s Island and Put-in-Bay is unbeatable. Between the riding, the hospitality, and the diversity of different places to ride that involve being near the water, it’s as magical as being in places like the California coastline or Lake Tahoe. TRO: You haven’t been to Ohio Bike Week in the last couple of years. When you and I caught up in Daytona this year, you told me that you’ve come across many folks at different rallies across the country that you met while here in Ohio. I know a lot of them, including myself are happy to know you are coming back. Jay Allen: Yeah, I just did Arizona Bike Week and the Daytona Bike Week prior to that. I’ve got to say one thing about the people in Ohio, I know they’ve had a really tough economy. But they save their shuckles to go to Bike Week. I mean you’re talking blue collar, God Bless America. That’s the State of Ohio. They’ve got motorcycling in their heart.
and I’m honored to have them say “When are you coming back to Ohio?” So this year in Daytona I got to tell them, “Hey, yeah I’m coming back”. I can’t wait. I’m really excited. I’ve got a lot going on and I hope I can share my part of what I’ve learned and my experiences and what I believe in, with the people in Ohio this Summer. I’m looking forward to it. TRO: You were talking a little bit about Roeder’s racing history and the Land Speed record that my father-in-law set. You have raced in the Salt Flats and set a few Land Speed records yourself. Jay Allen: It’s a real cool story. Many many years ago I bought an Indian that was built to go to Bonneville. But to me at the time it was a prop for the Broken Spoke. It was a bike to hang on the wall, put in the window, or hang in the tree down in Daytona. But little did I know that it was something far more than that, because when I turned 50 years old I decided that I needed to start doing things in life other than just running the Broken Spoke. That little Indian called my name and I looked at my buddy Dave Iverson, who founded the Broken Spoke. I said Dave look me in the eye and shake my hand because I know you can wrench on that bike and let’s go to Bonneville. That little bike that was hanging there all those years and little did we know that it was a world record setting Indian Chief. To this day it is the fastest Indian in the world in its class. Since then I’ve been racing, it’s my ninth Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
year coming up. I’ve got it in my blood, just like you guys did. I’ve got the race bike behind me as we speak. I’m taking it back to my mechanic as fast as I can to get started on it to go to the Speed Week, the Bub Speed Trials and Lord willing, the world finals all at the Bonneville Salt Flats. TRO: That’s one place I’ve never been. I’m gonna have to come out and watch you one of these years. Jay Allen: You’ve got to come out and ride it yourself!
Jay Allen: I’m coming out there with my whole repertoire of doing anything it takes to entertain the riders. I’m bringing the Smoke Down Showdown, and the S & S Circle of Honor, we’ll be doing that on the last Saturday night. I heard that there is going to be a great ride on Thursday. Jesse James Dupree of Jackyl is going to be leading that ride, and I look forward to riding with Jesse and hanging with him and all the riders going on that event. I tell ya, some of the best people, and some of the hardest working people in the world come from Ohio and I just want to go out and ride with them.
TRO: You said you operated the Broken Spoke for over twenty years. Are you still involved with it?
I hear Margaritaville is having a big thing going on out there, and I’m hoping they let me come there and hang my hat for awhile. If they want to have some contests or head to head burnouts, let’s do it. I want to come out and play with the riders.
After close to two decades as the leader of Broken Spoke, I’ve stepped back from the brand because I had some corporate partners and we just had different philosophies. And for me to be true to who I am I needed to step away, even though I still own a large part of it.
TRO: You heard right Jay. Margaritaville in Sandusky is going to be our “Thunder Road Zone” Headquarters for all ten days of Ohio Bike Week. It’s gonna be ground zero for all the fun rides and events that Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine has planned.
So now it’s the Jay Allen road show. It’s what it’s always been, it’s nothing new. I put a new name on it, but it’s Jay Allen. And I’m coming back out, I’m doing what I do and I’m working for the best people in the world and that’s the bikers of the world.
Jay Allen: I’m not quite sure how many publications you have but I know that Thunder Roads Magazine is everywhere. For example in Iowa we are in Thunder Roads, and in New Orleans and in Louisiana. Everywhere I go they tell me “ya’ gotta be in Thunder Roads. “ So I just gotta assume that since there is a Thunder Roads in Ohio, you gotta be in Thunder Roads.
TRO: That’s even better! I hadn’t thought of that!
TRO: What is your agenda for Ohio bike Week this year, so we can steer our Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
Well I’m honored to be a part of it and I look forward to riding with everybody out in Ohio. I’ll see you guys out in Sandusky. I mean between the great riding along Lake Erie, Put-In-Bay, Kelley’s Island, Cedar Point, great bars, great restaurants, it doesn’t get better than that. TRO: Woo Hoo! Can’t wait Jay. I remember one year I was standing with you on the stage at the foot of Columbus Avenue during the downtown Block Party. We were looking out at the crowd of people standing shoulder to shoulder for as far as we could see. You said to me, “Look at all the smiles on their faces. You never know what these people are going through, one of them might have just lost their mom, or just been diagnosed with a serious illness, or lost their job last week. But here they are forgetting their troubles and having a good time. Isn’t it a great feeling to know that this event can do that for people?” Do you remember that? Jay Allen: Absolutely, you know I always tell people that that is the result if I do my job well and the event is good. That’s a very powerful thing when somebody can literally disconnect from their worries that we all have and just kind of live in the moment. And those are the moments that validate that. To look out there and see it just saturated with people living in the moment, having a great time, listening to good music, and the companionship, and the camaraderie, it’s just frickin’ amazing! It’s a very powerful thing to look out there and see that and know that they are just sucking it up like sponges. Everybody come on out during Ohio Bike Week and lets rock Ohio’s North Coast! 15
The Benefits of Practice Statistically up to 78% of crashes result from improper braking. Almost all of the crashes that I’ve personally heard about have also involved poor braking skills. During an Easter trip to the Gatlinburg Tn. area, an event happened to me that prompted an article on braking.
Riding Safe
This story clearly illustrates the benefits of emergency braking practice. In the time it takes to snap your fingers three times I had to identify what this car was doing, apply maximum brake pressure, (without skidding the tires), immediately identify the jeep behind me was to close to stop completely, (mirror check) and then apply the swerve maneuver to keep from being rear-ended by the afore mentioned jeep.
Departing Gatlinburg on Easter morning, we were on a six lane divided with highway occupying the far left lane. It was a sunny morning with dry pavement which meant In this situation I didn’t have time to decide great riding. Traffic was heavy, (the norm) so what I should do, I had to rely on habits from my attention was in “high alert mode.” At about previous, regular practice. I didn’t have time to 40mph, a car in the next lane to my right decided “decide” to use both brakes. Thank God using they had to turn left at an upcoming turn-around. both brakes was a habit. Imagine what would In one quick move and with no signal, he cuts right in front of have happened if my habit was only using the rear brake. me. This was one of those reflex braking situations. In a split My regular practice allowed me to go right into “maximum second I had to maximum brake and immediately get off the threshold braking” because practice had made that a ‘habit’ brakes to swerve or I would have hit the car. Needless to say, and in this case a major ‘benefit.’ if I hadn’t practiced braking technique so much in the past this Next month we’ll dig deep into what is involved scenario could’ve turned real ugly. The braking practice gave in proper braking and how to get maximum tire grip while me the confidence to stop very quickly without locking up the braking. We’ll discover how our body position affects braking, tires, and the immediate swerve allowed me to avoid the back how head and eye positions are important and how our inputs end of the car and got me out of the way so I wasn’t rear-ended to the controls results in a safe stop or a potential crash. by someone else. I know I could have stopped just shy of hitting the car but I most likely would’ve been rear ended by the jeep Ride Safe behind me.
On March 20, 2012 I attended the Motorcycle Safety Rider Group Meeting at the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Several issues were discussed that I would like to make everyone aware of. One of the issues was discussed at this year’s seminar. I brought up that there were still many traffic signals across the state of Ohio that will not recognize motorcycles. I added that several of these have been reported, but still were not operating with a motorcycle. I was given contact information and a guarantee that the information I provided would be followed up on. Please email the locations of traffic signals that will not change with the weight of a motorcycle on it to legislativedirector@abate.com. I will make a list and forward it to my contacts. Please send me an address at the intersection or the name of the two roads or streets that intersect, town and a zip code. We also heard a report from a representative of OSP Traffic Statistics. This is the agency that compiles the OH1, the report that law enforcement compiles at the scene of an accident. My question was why does every motorcycle accident reported have to include whether or not helmets were being used? I explained that there was blame implied that motorcycles did not appreciate when it is ill relevant information. The answer was their report to NHTSA had to include the information. That does not necessarily mean that the media had to report that information, but that information sold newspapers. My suggestion is if you see or hear a news story on a motorcycle crash that includes whether or not the rider and or passenger was wearing a helmet, and you feel it is ill relevant information contact the media and let them know your feelings. If they get enough calls maybe they will understand that reporting ill relevant information is hurting their credibility. The last issue from this meeting I will bring up here is the Purple Heart MC License plate. I expressed frustration that this plate is
not being manufactured after a law was passed permitting the manufacture and sales. The reason we have been given is the size of the insignia can not be embossed due to size and the number of digits required. I answered that this was not an acceptable response as there are other insignias with the same size and as much detail already in production, besides the point that the number of digits can easily be dropped by 1 and there would still be plenty of digits available. The Department of Public Safety promised to look into the situation. Next topic, ABATE of Ohio, Inc.’s Voter’s Guide for 2012. I am compiling information about candidates at the state level for both Ohio’s House of Representatives and the Senate. I have written a 3 question survey that covers current legislation. There is a copy of this survey in this issue. I need help getting the survey out to candidates. Please get a copy or the survey to state level candidates for Ohio’s House of Representatives and Ohio’s Senate and have the candidate complete the survey. Please send completed surveys to votersguide@abate.com. Cutoff date for the surveys to be emailed back is 9/1/12. Final hearing for H.B. 316 and decision on shoulder high amendment is scheduled for April 25 at 4pm. Check next month for the outcome. If you are reading this prior to May 5, please plan on attending the Awareness Parade and Rally. We need to make a good showing to the public and our legislators. Until next month, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.

embarked on an early morning ferry ride to Put-in-Bay, Ohio with our feature editor Donn Shanteau. We wanted to talk to a few of the guys on the Island who own and ride their motorcycles there. “Put in Bay” is located on South Bass Island in the western basin of Lake Erie. It just so happened that we went on the day of the official season opening ceremony at the Famous Round House Bar. I have attended the “Whiskey Light” event in the past when it was limited to just a handful of locals, so I was surprised to see how the event has grown. The bar was packed as local entertainer Ray Fogg performed for several hours. At the end of his set, he play his long awaited song “Whiskey Light”, which commemorates the annual lighting of the neon Whiskey light that hands above the front door of the building. Everyone gets a complimentary glass of champagne for the toast when the Whiskey Light is finally illuminated for the first time of the season. It was heartwarming to witness the local islanders, seasonal employees, and the part-time seasonal residents, who are referred to as “cottagers” greeting each other. It reminds me of what motorcycle riders experience when we meet up with each other after a long winter. Despite growing up in the area, my late husband Will and I had 20

When you live on an Island, it is imperative you accomplish all of your tasks before you have to catch the last boat home. They were very grateful that I opened the doors for them, and after a pleasant introductory conversation, they extended an invitation to come visit them on the Island. Marsha was born and raised at Put-in-Bay and Carley had recently relocated there from Detroit, so they knew everyone and everything about the island. We took them up on their offer to visit and began making trips to the Bay, sometimes taking the bike across on the ferry and riding around the Island with Carley and Marsha. Our new friends introduced us to the “local” scene and we got to know many of the island residents, including Eric Booker and Scott Market. These two childhood friends both caught the “Harley Fever” one winter night while sitting around the bar with their friend Carley. Eric and Scott decided they would each buy bikes. Scott purchased a 1995 Heritage Softail Nostalgia, and Eric bought a 1996 Fat Boy which they both still own.
rarely visited the Lake Erie Islands. This seems to be the case for many who reside on Ohio’s North Coast or anywhere else for that matter. The tendency is to travel far away from home during our leisure time, not taking advantage of the attractions in our own back yard. On a Monday back in the mid 1990’s, I was in the office working at our Harley-Davidson dealership in Monroeville, Ohio. Put-in-Bay residents Marsha Parker and Carley Tobias were off the island running errands. They stopped by the store in need of a part, not realizing we were closed on Mondays. Scott Market reminisces that “I didn’t really know Will that well yet, and the day my bike came in he delivered it. He brought along a couple of Roeder H-D employees (Tom Berger and Tom Leto). These two were hard core Harley guys and they looked like they had just gotten out of the pit at the shop. When they pulled off the boat with my new bike in the back of a pickup truck, my dad’s looking at these guys and I know what he’s thinking “Is this what the hell you are getting in to?” My Dad was actually okay with me buying the bike, but my mom was worried, that “I was going to kill myself”. Later that night, I celebrated my new bike purchase with the guys at the Round House Bar. We all became the best of friends and have had “years of fun” ever since.” Put-in-Bay is sometimes referred to as the northern “Key West”, 21
and is well-known as a party island. During the 60’s and 70’s, it was legal to walk around town with your alcoholic beverages and you could also sleep in the park downtown. During this time biker clubs started to visit the island on their motorcycles. The island residents feared that adding them into the mix with the lax rules might lead to rowdiness that would be hard to control. To prevent large groups of bikers coming over the solution was to only allow motorcycles to be transported on the ferry in the back of a pickup or on a trailer. Scott’s father (Bill Market) was a captain on the Miller ferry line at that time when a group of bikers wanted to make the trip to Put-in-Bay. Captain Bill explained to the group leader “Mousey” that he could not haul their motorcycles over but that they could rent “bikes” when they got there. Scott’s mother Mary Ann would rent bicycles to the passengers when they got off the boat, which is where Bill sent them. Scott laughed as he remembered his mother renting Sting Ray bicycles with steering wheels and metallic banana seats to these guys. Scott’s family has owned and operated Miller Boat Line since 1978. Today it is the only ferry service to Put-in-Bay that transports vehicles. Not long after buying his new motorcycle, Scott realized that the motorcycle culture had changed and if they wanted to encourage motorcyclists to visit Put-in-Bay they would have to make it easier to get their bikes over there. So he went to his family and said “we need to change this”. The next season, they installed two chocks to tie bikes down to on each of the boats in their fleet. But this meant if you were traveling with a large group, it could still take hours to get everybody over there. As the bike traffic to Put-in-Bay has increased Miller Boat Line will now accommodate your whole group at once, allowing the bikes on without tying them down as long as the lake is smooth. In fact during Ohio Bike week they have hauled close to 50 bikes at a time. For several years in a row, Will would utilize the shop at Miller Boat Line for “Service Day at the Bay”. He would schedule appointments for himself and his technician Terry Osborn to do maintenance on all the local’s bikes. While working at the Miller Boat Line shop, Will and Terry discovered the old whistles from the ferry boats hanging on the wall. They took the air hose and chucked them up, blowing all the air horns which you could hear all around the Island. These are the type of shenanigans pulled by Will and crew on the Island over the years. Miller Boat Line has been in operation for over 100 years is operated today by the late Bill and Mary Ann Markets three children. Scott oversees Maintenance of the fleet, his sister Julene is in charge of Marketing and Public Relations, and his brother Billy is in charge of Daily Operations. You can find more history of the boat line and ferry schedules at www. millerboatline.com. 22
on the harbor’s main boardwalk is open daily June through August as well as on weekends in May and September. It offers one of the most phenomenal views of the sunset on the Island and is a popular place to view the fireworks on the Fourth of July. You can satisfy the cravings of your entire group at one of the Boardwalk’s numerous restaurants or bars including the Upper Deck, Marvin’s Garden Bar, Clawdaddy’s Rum Bar, and Rita’s Cantina. Seafood lovers flock to the Boardwalk each year to enjoy their live Maine Lobster, Alaskan king crab, fresh Shrimp and Lake Perch. For land-lover fare, they also offer big Juicy hamburgers and fries, Macho Nachos and fresh Salads. In season the Upper Deck services 1,100 per day with another 600 served downstairs.

It is family tradition for Eric to take all four of his boys for rides on his Fat Boy every year during the Oktoberfest celebration on Put-in-Bay. It is an annual family fun-filled event held on the second weekend in October where local residents take the opportunity to put their bikes and antique cars on display.
Continuing with the Market nautical family tradition, Scott and his wife Susan bought and restored a 1938 Tug Boat named “The Restless” on which they offer daytime or sunset cruises. You can take the helm or just relax and enjoy the view as you experience first-hand the charm and excitement of the all wood historic vessel. The cruises are BYOB but offer light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. You can also bring your own food or catering is available. For booking information visit www. putinbaycruises.com. As I visited with both Scott and Eric, it brought back stories of shared good times at Put-in-Bay. Eric recalled how we would look forward all year to the Island Poker Run and Clam Bake that were held in the fall. Island residents with motorcycles or scooters were joined by bikers from the mainland for a day of fun and treasure hunting around the island. The run would start at the Round House Bar and end up at the Frosty Bar where they blocked the street off for motorcycle only parking. Later in the evening there was a clam bake with entertainment by Ray Fogg, often turning into impromptu karaoke as well. My favorite memory of the Poker Run days was when the guys took a bike up on the deck of the Boardwalk and helped me do my first burnout! My all-time favorite burnout story however was during “Steal Stuff Night” at Put-in-Bay. The tradition started years ago when the students of Put-in-Bay school would go around the island collection random objects and place them in the front yard of the school. Eventually, the Round House Bar took over this tradition. The event is unscheduled and happens at the end of the season at the Round House manager’s discretion. Will and I happened to be on the island for this event one year with our friend Phil Stively. It caused quite a commotion when they pushed Phil’s motorcycle up the front steps of the Round House. Will then proceeded to do a burnout from the front door of the building right up to the bar, filling it up with smoke which was billowing out the doors! The crowd loved it, and the manager Teri Winchester actually had the guys sign it and varnished over it so it remained visible for many years. Eric shared with me that he repeated this incident this past September with his own bike. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
Dock Ancient Kiln near miller Ferry Eric is pleased to see more and more bikes on the island, sometimes noticing groups of six, eight, or twelve at a time. Every Sunday there is an Antique Car and “Toy” parade, where bikes are welcome. In July and August they will have 100+ vehicles in the parade which circles around the island and through downtown Put-in-Bay. If you attend the “Rally on the Rock” event on the first weekend during Ohio Bike Week this year, make sure you ride in it or find a good spot to view it from on one of the many outdoor porches at the establishments located downtown. For more details on the annual Rally on the Rock event visit www.rallyontherock.com. Eric, his wife Jen, and his father Marv are kept very busy all summer running their family business, “The Boardwalk” which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Boardwalk is home of Eric’s World Famous “Lobster Bisque”, serving over 80,000 bowls each year. The multi-level facility located right Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
Living on an island really restricts the amount of miles you can put on your bike per year. The biggest majority of the miles on both Scott and Eric’s bikes came from two trips off the island, when they joined us for Daytona Bike Week. With the increased responsibilities in their respective family business’s and raising young families, Eric and Scott don’t get out on their bikes as much as they used to. But they usually get to a bike night at Quaker Steak and Lube or attend a Rolling Bike Night event each year. The last time they had their bikes off the Island was for Will’s funeral in May of 2011.
Eric says he is truly an “Island biker” with only a total of 2,600 miles on his bike, averaging 162 miles per year. He joked that his bike was 16 years old and is now finally ready for its 2,500 mile checkup. Scott has Eric beat in the mileage contest with close to 4,000. When asked whether he ever considered leaving his bike on the mainland so it would be available for riding on there. Eric responded that “There is something to be said about riding your bike over on the ferry. It’s kind if a nice refreshing trip, astride your bike on the water in a boat. It’s pretty cool.” Although they do not get the opportunity to ride as much as they like, both Eric and Scott know their bike is sitting there waiting for them when they need to just take a putt and blow the cobwebs out of their heads. And neither of them would trade the experiences, memories and friendships that owning their bikes has brought into their lives. Me either. 23

by The Iron Cowboy for Thunder Roads Ohio esse James Dupree was previously known to many as “the guy who plays the chainsaw” – with the hard-rock band Jackyl, yet now millions know him as the “other biker Jesse
James – the one at Full Throttle”. This Jesse James - the front man for Jackyl and Michael Ballard’s partner in the Full Throttle Saloon – is coming to Ohio Bike Week for both a concert and a ride! Thunder Road’s Iron Cowboy had the chance to talk with Jesse for a few about chainsaws, bourbon, and Softail Heritages.. Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO): Boy – I’ve got lots of questions for you, you certainly have a lot going on! Jesse James Dupree (JJD): Yeah, I keep pretty busy – but I’m coming up to Ohio to hang with you folks for Bike Week! TRO: Jackyl has always seemed to get a great response here in Ohio. JJD: Ohio is really a favorite for us. Jackyl and Ohio – go together like Pretzels and Beer, course now it’s going to be pretzels and bourbon this time around. Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
TRO: That’s right – you’ve got your own bourbon. JJD: Don’t say it like that. This isn’t just some celebrity endorsement. This is a real bourbon – loud, proud – hard and honest. Just like our beer, we wanted to make a whiskey that cared less about the mass marketing and more about the people that bust their knuckles every day. It’s a real, old-time charcoal mellowed Bourbon Whiskey – aged in oak casks for a minimum of 36 months. TRO: So – whiskey, your own beer, a hit tv show built around ‘the world’s biggest
biker bar’ in the middle of the world’s largest motorcycle event.. and leading an actively touring rock band. You’ve got a crazy life. When you’re not doing all that – what’s the real Jesse James do? JJD: That really is all me. I know it sounds like a lot, but there really is a lot of synergy going on here. Too much, really. I actually got into TV because I was hoping that it was different then the music business, but it wasn’t. It’s basically the same thing. That’s ok though. I can’t complain. I love everything that I do. This is my life and who I really am. 27
downtown block party. It’s going to be crazy. [JACKYL is playing Thursday, June 7th in downtown Sandusky. www. ohiobikeweek.com] JJD: I’ll tell ya – what I really want to let people know about is the Ride that I’m hosting on Thursday. TRO: That’s the Pancreatic Cancer Benefit Run. [“Jessie James Dupree – Pancreatic Cancer Ride, In Memory of James Alan Dupree and April Burbach” Leaves Mad River Harley-Davidson at 10am on Thursday, June 7th] TRO: The outlaw rocker, television producer, biker, whiskey distiller… JJD: I basically just live my life. I work hard, but it’s doing stuff that I love. Rocking and hanging with great folks. TRO: I’m assuming that you are getting ready for another season of FULL THROTTLE? JJD: Yeah, we will be heading out there at the end of July – and just doing our thing. We just start shooting. TRO: Are you surprised at all by the response you’ve gotten from the show? JJD: Not at all. You know what Sturgis is like. It’s addictive. For every one person that goes to Sturgis, there are now another 1,000 that go vicariously through the show. TRO: What is it about Sturgis that makes it so unique amongst the rallies. JJD: I really think that each of the big rallies has its own personality. Sturgis has been going on for 72 years and its smack dab in the middle of America with big chunks of real Americana all around it. You have Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devil’s Tower, the Black Hills… there is just really cool stuff in every direction. That’s what Sturgis is. But, really each of the rallies is unique – which really makes it a treat to see them all! Laconia, Daytona, and of course – Ohio Bike Week. Each is a cool experience. I remember hearing a few years ago that there are more motorcycles in Ohio, per capita, then any other state. It’s just incredible. TRO: Yeah, we love our motorcycles. JJD: Well, it’s not just the motorcycles. 28
Ohio really is the poster child of REAL America. When folks talk about REAL AMERICANS – they are talking about Ohioans. You guys are the coolest, most down to earth – sincere people. You guys sincerely want to rock – and you sincerely want to do the right thing for your families. Ohio is America. I’ll tell ya, though – that’s probably one of my favorite things about Ohio Bike Week. Ohio Bike Week is your Rally. I mean it’s pretty much put on by Ohioans for Ohioans. Sure people come from out of state, but that’s not the main focus. When you go to Daytona and obviously Sturgis – everybody there is from everywhere else. Ohio Bike Week is driven by and all about a celebration of riders from Ohio! I think that’s great! TRO: It really is a homecoming of sorts. Bike Week kicks off the big summer season for us – and gives us a great chance to catch up with brothers from all across the State, folks we haven’t seen since the last riding season.
JJD: I’m cool with it – and maybe enjoy it. KISS may never outlive the image of the big boots and makeup – but obviously that’s not enough to keep them around for so long. I’m glad that there is something that memorable about us – that people identify me with. I honestly get more people asking me about getting shot out of the cannon these days, though. TRO: Yeah, I just saw that video. So – what was that like? JJD: Explosive! I’ve made some exits from stage before – but that was certainly my most volatile! (laughing) TRO: Hopefully things will be smoother for your show this year at Ohio Bike Week. JJD: I don’t know. We will have plenty of Bourbon – so who knows! Seriously, though, we are really excited about playing downtown as part of Ohio Bike Week. TRO: Yeah, it’s a free show to kick off the
JJD: I’m so glad that I’m able to make it up early enough to do this ride – which really means a lot to me. The biker community as a whole is really an incredible thing. We are a fraternity of caring folks that can come together to support a great cause. Bikers are always willing to jump in and work to make a difference. And seeing as we are in Ohio – I can’t wait to see the turn out. TRO: We will make certain that we help spread the word. JJD: I’d really appreciate it. I just got back from riding in a Benefit for The Wounded Warrior Project. Like I said – it says something about the caliber of people that ride motorcycles that we support so many causes and actively participate in so many efforts. Bikers have a tremendous sense of community. I’ll tell you though – let you in on a little secret. If everything goes as planned – I may announce that I’m running for mayor of Sandusky during Bike Week. TRO: Would that be Mayor of Bike Week – or Mayor of Sandusky? (laughing)
JJD: I’ve seriously thought that we should bring the camera crews out and do a show about the planning and behind the scenes aspects of Ohio Bike Week. It would be great to put some cameras on them. TRO: I am sure that would be an enlightening show for many people. Very few have any idea of how much work goes into planning an event like this. JJD: Yeah, it’s incredible. TRO: I’ve got to change gears a little here and ask you about the Guinness Book of World Records citations you’ve received – 100 shows in 50 days and 21 shows in 24 hours? JJD: They were both about us just getting out there and ROCKIN’ IT. The 21 shows was us going on virtually non-stop at a single location; but the 100 shows in 50 days – that was really draining. Pretty much put myself in the hospital after that one, from pure exhaustion. We ran around with a stage on a flatbed truck and performed nonstop. TRO: You pretty much have that reputation – of being one of the hardest working bands in rock. JJD: We take this seriously. We are fortunate to be able to live these lives and it’s the least we can do.
JJD: No. That was the first Harley I ever owned and I still can’t fathom not having it. That was my bike – a 94’ Heritage. They totaled out the bike – but I still have it. I’m thinking that I will restore it. TRO: What happened? JJD: I was riding down here in northern George on a back country rode, when I went to make a left turn. As luck would have it – the guy behind me decided to pass me at that moment. I got hit on the side. TRO: Could have been worse, it sounds. JJD: Yeah, could have been. More then anything, though – I was upset about losing my bike. I sure did love that motorcycle. TRO: I can relate – I have almost the same bike, a year later. Been riding it for more years then I’m going to admit to. Just can’t bring myself to change bikes. You just get attached to them. JJD: So, are you going to bring her out to the ride? TRO: I’m planning on it. JJD: Sounds good to me. Pretzels n Bourbon in Sandusky for Ohio Bike Week! We are going to rock it!
TRO: So what are you riding these day? JJD: I’ve got a Street Glide – that I get out on. TRO: So, does that replace the Heritage? [Jesse was in an accident last year on his bike.]
JJD: Yeah, and that’s TRO: So with the TV show and everything else, are you looking to get past the “guy with the chainsaw” image? JJD: Do I need to? TRO: Not at all – but I’ll never forget the first time I saw you guys live. Opening up for Aerosmith – and then you broke out with the chainsaw. No disrespect for those guys – years later, that may be the thing I best recall from that show. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Cowboy Action Shooting:
Getting Started By Jim Taylor (J Bar T) SASS #53379
I
suppose almost all shooters have heard of Cowboy Action Shooting by now. One the fastest (if not the fastest) growing segments of the Shooting Sports, Cowboy Action continues to attract new shooters even though it has been around for a long time. Inspired by the movie “The Wild Bunch” a group of shooters in California began shooting “cowboy style” on a regular basis in the 1970’s. The idea continued to grow and spread and the result was the formation of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) (www.sass.net), the original and largest of the Cowboy Action organizations today with over 50,000 members.
The matches are broken up into various shooting stages with different western-theme scenarios. They range from the simple to the complex. For instance, we are just getting a Cowboy Action Shooting club started in our area. We have targets but not many props, but our shoots have been fun and are stirring interest. I have shot at matches where the club that sponsored the match obviously spent much time, money and thought in putting together the props. They ranged from stagecoaches to saloon fronts and stationary as well as moving “horses”. A little thought on the part of those putting the match together keeps things interesting for shooters as well as spectators. The classes of shooters that SASS has set are as follows: Modern: single action pistols .32 caliber or larger with adjustable sights.
The firearms used are limited to firearms or replicas thereof, of the kind produced before 1899. Handguns are limited to single action revolvers. Rifles can be either lever action or slide action but both must have exposed hammers and must be in “pistol” calibers. Shotguns can be either double barrel (external hammers or “hammerless”) or slide action (with a hammer) of the types made before 1899. They cannot be larger than 10 ga. nor can they have barrels shorter than 18”. Ammunition for the handguns and rifles are limited to lead bullets at very moderate velocities. Shotguns are limited to “low brass” lead shot loads with #4 birdshot or smaller.
Traditional: single action cartridge, percussion, or black powder cartridge conversion manufactured before 1896 or a replica thereof. Fixed sights.
The various Cowboy Action organizations may have slightly different rules in some area, but those are the basics. There are Side Matches for Buffalo Rifles or “Long Range” rifles as they are called. There are also Side Matches involving Pocket Pistols and Derringers. The combinations and how they are used in a match are almost endless and always entertaining. One thing about Cowboy Action that makes it attractive to new shooters, it’s fun to watch!
Frontiersman: same as Frontier Cartridge but limited to .36 caliber or larger and fired Duelists-style.
The rules also call for contestants to adopt a “handle” (a “Cowboy” name) and to wear period clothing. Some groups are stricter in this area than others, especially on the National level. You usually will find that the local clubs encourage you to dress western, but especially if you are just getting started, jeans, boots and a cowboy hat will not be looked down upon. Any new shooter that shows up at a local match will not be turned away or snubbed, whether he or she has all the “proper” attire. I included “she” for this is one area of shooting that is attracting women shooters faster than any other area of the sport. I have seen women really get into the Cowboy Shooting scene who before this never seemed interested in firearms. A big part of the credit for that has to go to the friendliness of most all the cowboy shooters out there. That and the “fun” aspects of playing cowboy. 32
Frontier Cartridge: percussion or cartridge single action pistols or replicas thereof of a type made before 1896. .32 caliber or larger, firing black powder only. Duelist: traditional styled single actions, cocked and fired one-handed, unsupported. Gunfighter: two traditional style single actions, one held and fired in the right hand, one held and fired in the left hand.
There are additional rules that go with some of the above but these give you the general over-view. Local clubs may make minor changes/allowances. I have been shooting with various Cowboy Action groups off and on for a few years but I had never gotten serious about it. This last year I decided I wanted to do this on a regular basis and began gathering things that I needed: guns, ammo, wardrobe … all the essentials. Sure, I had guns, but I figured that if I am going to shoot matches several times a month I ought to use something other than my 1st Generation Colt SAA’s… they are just too valuable to be using that hard… at least to me. And I wanted another levergun. I had a Marlin 1894CL in .32-20 that worked pretty well. The action is slick and the gun is accurate. But I wanted a Model 92 Winchester or a copy of one. I had the shotgun, an old Stevens 311 12 gauge with 18 ½” barrels that would work fine. And I wanted some of those neat clothes I saw folks wearing. The old-timey ones. My wife liked the Victorian-style dresses and said she would help me with the clothing, so I started on the guns. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
Kits are available for Rugers, Colts, and replicas of Colt from Brownells, MidwayUSA, Qualite’ Pistol & Revolver For the levergun I picked up a copy of the Winchester 92 by and a large number of other online sources. I ordered the Rossi in .357. I smoothed up the action some and shot it a lot. springs for the Ubertis online from Brownells. For the bolt/ Using it helped worked some of the stiffness out of it. The more I trigger spring I chose the Heinie spring. This is a “wire” used it the more I liked it. It has become my main Cowboy rifle. spring, not the flat-type normally used in Colt’s and Colt-types. To personalize it I removed the Carbine stock and replaced it Not only does it lighten the trigger pull, it lasts indefinitely. with a rifle stock that has the crescent buttplate. I removed the In addition to the springs I personalized the sixguns by ugly black finish that the Rossi’s have on their wood and simply removing the varnish on the grips. Under it I found nice wood oiled the stock and fore-end, making its appearance quite a bit on one gun. That grip I gave an oil finish. The other gun had different. Sights have to be original or replica open iron sights or tang-mounted peep sights of the 1860 – 1899 period. I have wood that could be best described as “blah”. On that gun I installed a set of Grip Maker’s one-piece imitation Stag grips. left the sights on the Rossi that came on it and they work just The grips from Grip Maker are made oversize and you must fit fine for me. them to the gun yourself. It takes some time, but if you follow SINGLE ACTION PISTOLS the directions they come out pretty nice. I was pleased with For the sixguns I decided to go with Ubertis. There are any how mine turned out. number of good single action revolvers available today. For the person starting out they would never go wrong buying a Ruger. HOLSTERS The Ruger Vaquero is one of the more popular ones and it is an excellent choice. There are also great cowboy guns from Now that I had the sixguns I needed some way to tote them Cimarron Arms, from USFA, from stores like Cabela’s and around. I had carried the Colts in a “strong side” holster along from quite a few other sources. with a crossdraw holster. I did not care for the crossdraw and decided I would go with left-hand and right-hand conventional Replicas of the Colt Single Action Army are not the only guns carry holsters. I contacted Big John Delavan in Florence, used of course. There is the Smith & Wesson Schofield Arizona and had him make me 2 holsters, one left-hand and which is quite popular with some. You can also use the Smith one right-hand. I told him I wanted them plain, no stampings or & Wesson Russian or the Remington Model 1875 or Model embossing on them. Just a set of plain, Mexican Double-Loop 1890. And there a number of “cap and ball” revolvers to holsters. choose from if that is your preference. My RIFLE
The reason I chose Uberti was this: I wanted guns that were close replicas of my Colt SAAs. I had a limited budget. And I got a deal that fell within what I was looking for and took it. For those who want to tune up their single action revolvers so that they run smoothly and to help the reliability there are several options. One is to send the guns off to a gunsmith and have them tune them up. For those on a limited budget or who just like to Do-It-Yourself, one of the easiest things to do is install a reducedpower spring kit. These help lighten the force needed to cock the hammer. They can also reduce wear on internal parts. Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
John’s prices are extremely reasonable and his holsters are made the old-timey way. Cut by hand, sewn by hand (no machines .. just two needles) and they reflect the way things were done over 100 years ago. They are done with care. The leather used is like it came off the cow. If it has a scar in it, so does your holster. It gives them a unique and distinctive quality. John is a cop who was retired by gunfire. He was ambushed and shot while on duty and it ended his Law Enforcement career. Thus was born his holster business. If you are looking to get into Cowboy Shooting and need some holsters, give John a call.

CLOTHING You need not spend outrageous sums of money on clothing in order to get started either. I mean, you can if you want to. There are a number of fine clothing makers today who specialize in and produce period clothing. But you can do this yourself also. I know a fellow that went to a used clothing store and bought an old suit that had stripes very much like many of the old Western clothes. His wife removed the belt loops and sewed buttons on the pants for the old-time suspenders. He has less than $5.00 in the pants.
GUNBELT I needed a good belt to hang the holsters on but I did not want to spend a bunch of money for it. Mr. Prairie Lightning suggested going to the supply store and buying a Klein Tool Belt. The one he suggested is the Model 5415 (Embossed Heavy Duty) that is a nice sturdy 2” wide belt made for carrying heavy tool pouches. They have a double-tongued buckle and they are American-made! The price is just over $20 here in Missouri! I did not want a belt with cartridge loops and since the Klein belt does not have them it was just what I was looking for. The belts have a nice basket-weave pattern on them and work just fine. SHOTGUN The Stevens shotgun needed more work than any of them. The old shotgun worked, but it was difficult to work it! The opening lever was very stiff. Breaking the barrels open you almost had to put it over your knee. When you are shooting against a clock that is not a good thing! Again, Brownell’s came to the rescue. They offer a reduced-power spring kit expressly for the Stevens 311. It consists of a reduced power opening lever spring, 2 reduced power trigger springs, and 2 reduced power hammer springs. This makes the double-barrel gun much easier to open. It also helps it hang open while reloading. The original hammer springs are very strong and with a short-barreled gun actually tries to close the action some, hindering reloading. If you are not a DYI-er then you may want to get a gunsmith to modify your shotgun. Doing-It-Myself on the shotgun has given me quite a few frustrations. Any side-by-side double barrel 20 gauge to 10 gauge may be used as long as it does not have ejectors. A number of shooters like the old “outside hammer” shotguns for their authentic looks. These can be used quite competitively. Quite a few shooters prefer the Winchester 97 pump shotgun. The Winchester and the early Marlin pump guns can be used, but you are only allowed to load 2 shells. Some Cowboy shooters are using the old lever-action 1887 Winchester shotguns also. As with the pump guns, only 2 shells may be loaded. Choosing your firearms is going to be according to your budget of course. Let me encourage you to start out with whatever you have. If you are like most of us you will not be able to begin with everything you need or want. The neat thing about Cowboy shooters is, they want to help! I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to a match with my 6-shot Marlin 1894CL. On a 9 or 10 shot stage I would have to stop and reload my Marlin. Over and over again I have had shooters come and offer me the use of their rifle. And these were guys I was trying to beat! 34

Button-fly jeans can be used the same way. Remove the belt loops. Sew on buttons for suspenders and you have a pair of Old West cowboy pants. You can buy the blue work shirts from Sears that come without a collar. They are still made like they were in the old days. Or you can remove the collar. Presto! An old-timey shirt. Along with a pair of boots and a cowboy hat and you are in business. As time goes by you can make or purchase other clothing. Be warned. You will spend more than you thought and you will buy things you never thought you would. And you will thoroughly enjoy yourself. AMMO Some Cowboy shooters reload their own ammo and some do not. If you do not reload there are a number of companies offering Cowboy loads in a large variety of calibers. These loads are at the reduced velocities required. For instance, Black Hills Ammunition Co. offers Cowboy loads in .32 H&R, .32-20, .38 Long Colt, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .3840, .44-40, .44 Russian, .44 Colt, .44 Special, .45 Schofield, .45 Colt and several rifle cartridges such as the .45-70 and .38-55. For those that want more authenticity, Cor-Bon offers black powder loads in .38 Special, .45 Colt, .45-70 and 12 gauge. I use these from time to time when I shoot SASS Last I would suggest you join SASS, the Single Action Shooting Society. You don’t need a membership in SASS to get started in Cowboy Shooting but it is a good thing to do. This is the founding group of Cowboy Action Shooting. For your entry fee you receive a year’s membership, a badge, an identification/membership card, a decal, the SASS Shooter’s Handbook, and a years subscription to the Cowboy Chronicle. You won’t be sorry you did. For an in-depth look at Cowboy Action Shooting pick up the book, “ACTION SHOOTING, COWBOY STYLE” by John Taffin. You will find it a great addition to your library. Much of the research you will need to do has been done already in this book. Editor’s Note: As always, Thunder Roads recommends that you follow every possible safety precaution in the handling of firearms – and that you get a Concealed Carry permit if you own a firearm. Before carrying, though, you should fully understand and have confidence in your ability to use your firearm. Thunder Roads appreciates this contribution from Jim. You can find additional material from him and other writers at gunblast.com. 35

It all may sound confusing but it really boils down to a simple process:
1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. You can your card by going to a Registration Stop (listed here in the magazine), going to a Thunder Run Event (also listed here in the magazine), or by signing up online. In person registrations are ALWAYS free, however there is a $10 registration fee to sign up on-line. The proceeds from this help support charitable motorcycle events across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE: Some events and Registration Stops may run out of Cards due to demand. Please call ahead to avoid problems whenever possible. Thanks!
4. We will keep track of the sign-in’s and points – and award prizes! All prize winners will be contacted by email.
The 2012 Buckeye Thunder Run (BTR) is upon us! This is a state-wide, summer-long riding contest hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio with the support of Motoreagles. com and Rider Insurance. It is a riding contest like no-other and features great prizes and cash pay-outs every month!
It’s really that simple!
Have a motorcycle oriented business in Ohio?
Each month, Thunder Roads will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops in the magazine. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to earn points for each stop. Additional points are given for purchases made and distance ridden to the stop. Some stops and local sponsors will be hosting specific give-aways for their stops. These added prizes will just build on the excitement, by allowing participants to win all summer long! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.
We are also working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events
We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.
Based upon the number of stops, distance ridden, and certain bonuses offered at the locations – riders will earn points every month. Thunder Roads will track these points and award prizes throughout the riding season based upon the run rankings and points being added during specific periods of time. For instance, we will be awarding prize packages to the point leaders amongst both the men and women riders. We will recognize the riders with both the highest cumulative points – and the most earned during the specific month.
We will be adding NEW Stops and changing up the list EVERY MONTH!
The Ride Cards, presented by Motoreagles.com, will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. As the season progresses, Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.
Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week, will have special booths for registration and offer special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. 38
Thunder Roads will also be selecting rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special incentives. During the month of May, Thunder Roads has teamed with Ohio Bike Week to offer several VIP Bike Week packages that include hotels and meet n’ greets with national performers! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook (www.facebook.com/ thunderroadsohio ) 3. Get out and Ride! Hit the stops and show them your card. For the month of May, you will receive:
10 points
for each stop you sign-in at You are also eligible for the following bonuses in May:
+10 points
if you spend at least $10 at the location.
+20 points
As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. _________________________________________________________
Have a Stop in mind for the Run? If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. teve Higdon is simply known as “Tennessee Steve” to just about anyone that knows him. Steve refers to Nashville, Tennessee as his hometown – but for the last eight years he has called Northern Ohio home while working as a painter at Cedar Point.
Steve is particularly proud of his heritage not just as a Southerner – but as a son of Tennessee. ‘Tennessee has a proud heritage. Looking back towards the Civil War and other fights, we have a history of standing up for what we believe in. When the Texans decided it was time to fight for their independence from the Mexicans – Davie Crocket and Jim Bowie led Tennessee volunteers down there to help them fight. That’s where our nickname – the ‘Volunteer State’ comes from. Way back then – volunteering to help the Texans fight for their freedom.” This sense of pride led him to consider a Southern theme for his bike as he looked to upgrade it. Steve was the original owner of a 92’ XLH Harley-Davidson, and he had a vision of something much more then a stock Sporty. His sister in California had just done a Confederate themed bike – and that really got him thinking. Steve went out and saw Pamela Shanteau of Air Illusions Airburshing in Swanton. It just so happened that Mike Bell, the Mayor Toledo, was picking up his tins from the shop that day. “I just couldn’t believe the workmanship – and I knew that I was in the right place”, Steve remembered. “We talked about my vision, and then I left it to Pam.” “When I came out to pick everything up, I literally cried.”
44
From the first moment you see Tennessee’s far from stock Sporty – you know that this is clearly a labor of love. “The bike has become such an incredible project and is certainly no longer simply my bike.” The folks from Strokers and Fox’s Cycles in Sandusky worked on the engine and made sure that the bike ran better then new. Roeder Racing changed out the front end and from there Steve decided that he wanted to take things to a whole new level. “Sandusky Machine did all the custom fabrication – including the shift pegs and bugel. Walter and James Schaufer really jumped into the project and made some great contributions. The footpegs are actual vintage officer’s spurs from that era, and the gas cap features a commemorative General Lee pure silver coin embedded into it. “Art Alloy provided the brass hand grips and the Delbert Jones from Colorado did the silverwork. We found a real craftsman in Castillia, Ohio – Howard Wax. He had created a custom saddle and holsters for Tom Cruise in the Last Samauri – so he seemed like a natural choice to create a saddle for our bike.” Indeed, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting saddle with its detailed work and featured silverwork. The end result is a unique motorcycle that captures the spirit of its owner. “This is a tribute to the spirit of the South and the hillbillies that went to war because that’s what you do. This bike features the ‘bars and stars’ but its about the conflict itself – not about one side being right over the other. That conflict pitted brothers against brothers – within the same households, and it’s part of our heritage. It’s part of my heritage.” Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

fun, lightweight bike that can carry you from Cleveland to Toledo - AND BACK on a single tank of gas!
Since it’s introduction in 1986, the Kawasaki Ninja 250 has been in a class of its own here in the United States without any real competition in this light weight category.
With the current state of fuel prices and no break in sight - it appears that Honda hopes to capture the hearts of frugal riders and not simply those looking for a low cost introduction to riding.
Honda changed that last year with the introduction of the 2011 CBR 250 R which immediately became a challenger in the entry-level sport bike class. Honda has carried over the model to 2012, simply adding a new color scheme (White/Pearl Blue/Red) to the catalog.
In addition to a traditional Honda focus on fuel economy and operational efficiency - this baby CBR is still a sport bike. This Honda motor features no less then 27 patented design technologies in the engine alone - and many of them are designed to reduce friction / drag within the power plant. These cutting edge approaches seek to improve efficiency and longevity. They also allow the CBR to get the most out of every inch - or centimeter of the engine.
The 2012 Honda CBR 250R features a single-cylinder engine in order to develop increased fuel efficiency in this light weight sport bike. The four stroke, liquid cooled single-cylinder engine has a 249.4 cc engine capacity and an EPA estimated fuel economy of 77mpg. This allows over 200 miles to a single tank of gas!
Reviews of the CBR 250R all note plenty of power and responsiveness in the compact sport bike. Testing of last year’s CBR 250 R and the Ninja 250 R showed them to produce 23.7 horses and 25.5 horses respectively. While that may not garner too much “respect” in those used to riding larger (and much HEAVIER)

powerhouses - these bikes are designed for a different approach to riding the streets. Weighing only 357 pounds, the CBR is able to deliver a light and precise responsiveness to the rider. The CBR 250 R features a diamond twinspar steel frame, a 37mm front fork, and a Pro-Link single shock rear suspension. The package delivers a fun, comfortable ride with impressive handling. In it’s promotional material, Honda describes the CBR250R as having an innovative approach to riding that is both appealing and fun. With it’s sophisticated engine and crisp 6-speed transmission, the CBR250R is clearly designed to offer something for both beginners and more experienced riders. For daily commutes, errands across town, or breaking out to explore back roads - this seems like a fun bike to ride. At a price point of $4,099 (BASE MSRP according to powersports.honda.com) and an estimated 77mpg, this seems to be a very practical choice as well! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Motorcycle Mamas I
By Julie Roeder
wasn’t introduced to the motorcycle lifestyle until I started working at the Harley-Davidson dealership in Monroeville Ohio a few years after getting out of high school. Besides the stories my father told me of his days riding Military Police Bikes when he was in the Marines, no one else in my family had ever taken an interest in riding, most certainly not my Mother! So not having grown up in a motorcycling family, it was hard to comprehend the special bond that exists with generations of family members that ride together. At the helm of one of these families was Elizabeth Jean France from Mansfield, Ohio. I met Jean (she preferred to be called by her middle name) and her husband Carl not long after starting my new job. I knew from the start that these people were just deep down good folks. But I didn’t know that riding motorcycles had been such a big part of their relationship right from the beginning until I stopped by to visit their son Bill at B & L Cycle Shop in Mansfield. Bill explained that his Mother was from really good old stock

and grew up on a farm in Minnesota. Her Mother died from cancer when Jean was just eleven years old. Despite years of indulging in drinking and Copenhagen Snuff, her Father lived to be ninety. For many years she distanced herself from her Dad when he married another woman and moved to Ohio, leaving Jean and her siblings back in Minnesota with relatives. When she was seventeen years old she tracked her dad down, which is how she ended up residing in Mansfield. She got herself established and eventually sent for her brother, then her sister and pretty soon all of them came to live there. Bill’s father Carl was riding motorcycles before he met Jean. His first bike was a 1937 80 cubic inch Harley. In 1941, not long before joining the Navy, he purchased a 1942 WLB Harley from Woody Kimes, the Harley Dealer in Mansfield at the time for $456 dollars. This was during World War Two right before Pearl Harbor. When he got back from the Service everyone was trying to buy it from him. Motorcycles were scarce in the States back then as Harley devoted the majority of their production to Military Bikes for several years. He sold the ’42 for $456, 53

then women just didn’t ride”, said Bill.
“She used to come around here to my shop and I’d take her for rides in this little Cushman truck. There was a Bike Night every Wednesday at the Wayside Inn. Sometime I’d take her in my Cushman truck or in the sidecar. When my Mother didn’t show up with me they’d ask where she was. She got along with anybody and enjoyed herself all the way up to the end.”
All three of Carl and Jean’s children, including her daughter Bonnie, caught the riding bug, and their whole clan would ride together up to the events at our Harley shop in Monroeville. 56 Panhead on lift
exactly what he paid for it, and purchased a new 1948 Panhead for $856. He was making $20 per week at the time.

Jean often spoke fondly of when one day she was crossing the street and Carl came by on his motorcycle. He took one look at her and it took off from there. When they were courting Carl would pick her up on his bike and she would ride side-saddle behind him because she would have a skirt on. They were married in January of 1948, and for the first two years they didn’t have a car. Carl would ride the Panhead to work at the Westinghouse plant, putting a windshield on it to help protect him from the elements during Ohio’s winters. Their daughter Bonnie was born in September of 1948. They would put their new baby in-between them on the bike when they would ride to the grocery store, filling the saddlebags with their purchases. When Bill was born in 1950 Carl had to break down and buy a car, but he kept that motorcycle. Bill reflected that “Ma always liked being around motorcycles and riding with my Dad, but she never got her own driver’s license until she was in her 30’s. She admitted to me that one time after they got married when Dad wasn’t at home she started up their bike and rode it around the block.” “Dad had a 90cc Honda that Mom would practice riding 54
around on and by the early 70’s she had her motorcycle endorsement. She bought a ‘68 Honda Dream and she would ride it to work at the truck stop.” Jean rode that Honda for quite a while until one day she spotted a 1988 Kawasaki KZ400 for sale. Bill stated that “It was owned by another woman rider and it had saddlebags. Ma was a just a little lady and the seat was lowered on this bike, so she bought it. She rode that bike for the longest time and really enjoyed it.” Bill still has his Mother’s Kawasaki and says he may pass it on to his daughter or granddaughter.
Around 1983 or 1984, Jean got the itch to visit her aunts and uncles in Minnesota. She was determined to make the trip on her 1988 Kawasaki just to prove she could do it. Bill’s brother Mike, who was only 16 or 17 at the time, wanted to go along so Bill let him borrow his Honda 200 Twin Star. Bill recounts that “They rode those bikes all the way out to Minnesota. They took the back way and had it all mapped out. The weather was good and they had no problems.” Jean’s spunk and character were what drew me and anyone else who met her, to love her. It amazed me that she was brave enough to ride that motorcycle, much less on a cross-country trip. Women just didn’t ride back then. “I don’t know if it was peer pressure or just the time period we grew up in, but back Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
On a Saturday In 1990 someone came by Bill’s shop to tell him that his sister Bonnie had been in a motorcycle accident. Bonnie was riding on the back of her husband Clifford’s motorcycle on their way up to the Monroeville Harley Shop to pick up her bike that was in for service. A car pulled out in front of them on Route 13 and they were both killed instantly.
Bill uncovers buried treasure
Although the family was devastated, it did not discourage them from continuing to ride. They eventually brought Bonnie’s bike back home and his mom and dad would ride it sometimes. When Jean’s husband Carl passed away in 1994 she asked my father-in-law George Roeder to be a pallbearer. It meant the world to her that George rode clear down to Mansfield from Monroeville in the rain, went to the cemetery and rode back. Jean continued to ride Bonnie’s bike after Carl died until she started losing strength in her upper body. Bill bought his sister’s bike from his mom and still has Bonnie’s 1989 Low Rider in his motorcycle collection. In fact, he rode it to Daytona last year when his own bike, a 2003 Harley Dresser was still tore up from a motorcycle accident he was involved in. Jean kept her Kawasaki until she got leery of riding up her driveway in gravel. At that point Bill put a Sidecar on his Dad’s Panhead and would pick her up and take her for rides. Bill remembers “Boy she enjoyed that. I’d take her around in the sidecar to festivals, to see her grandkids, and I even brought her up in it to ride in George Roeder’s funeral procession.” Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
On occasion she would climb on the back of his Dresser so he could take her for a ride on that. 2008 was the last time she rode with him. Jean was diagnosed with cancer and went downhill fast. She passed away in March of 2009. Jean had several claims to fame during her life. She was pictured on the front page of the Mansfield News Journal during the annual Vintage Days celebration. She also appeared on the Bill Cosby Show “You Bet Your Life”. When Cosby asked her about riding her motorcycle, she replied “Oh yes I ride, vroom vroom vroom!” Several years before her death, her niece did a video interview with her to record her memories and philosophies on life. I had the privilege of viewing this recording at her funeral. She shared numerous stories and many words of wisdom, but the one that has stuck in my head ever since is that “God doesn’t always give you what you want, but he always gives you what you need”.
Bill’s mom, dad, and sister are gone but he still has their motorcycles and years of memories riding together with them. Today Bill is at the helm of this motorcycling family, passing his parents legacy and passion for the lifestyle on to his children and grandchildren. It has truly been on honor to have known the France family. Elizabeth Jean France didn’t just have a life-long love of motorcycling. She lived a long life, within a motorcycling family loving each other. 55

Fairbanks, Alaska
F
airbanks Alaska has a population of 30,500. The longest day there is June 21. It boasts 21 hours and 29 minutes of sunshine. The shortest day, Dec. 21 has 3 hours and 42 minutes of daylight. Its coordinates are 64°50’16’N 147°42’59”W and that puts it about 100 “Crow Miles” from the Arctic Circle. I learned from the riders I camped with in Anchorage that the University of Alaska Fairbanks rents dorm rooms for $39.00 per night. It includes the bare necessities; bed, desk & closet. Showers and toilet were down the hall and the kitchen facilities resided on the first floor. The least expensive motel in town was $89.00. There is also a choice of 3 hostels at $25.00 per night. Just down the block from my room was the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North. It is separated into the 5 geographical regions of the state. On display in the Alaskan Peninsula section was a record Brown Bear standing 8 feet 9 inches tall and weighing in at 1,250 pounds. I stopped in at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum owned by West Mark Hotel chain. It was opened just one year ago. The 70 elegant all American made autos dated back to 1898, the newest a 1936 Cord. Each machine featured some unique innovation. The collection includes the first auto constructed and driven in Alaska. Also on display is a “1903 Toledo” built in Toledo Ohio by the International Motor Car Co. That year the company claimed to be the largest automobile factory in the world. Downtown I went to the Ice Museum; “Our Assets Are Frozen” was their motto. Each year Fairbanks hosts an international ice 58
carving competition. Some of the entries are carved by five member teams over a period of 5 days. Many of the smaller winning carvings are kept permanently frozen for display. There is an ice bar complete with ice stools and ice carved martini glasses where you are allowed to sit and have your picture taken. After a very boring film, a young man carved a highly detailed fish for our pleasure. Speaking of cold, an enterprising young man opened “40 Degrees Below Fairbanks”. I paid $8.00 and was loaned a down filled jacket and led into a small chamber. It wasn’t minus 40 degrees, it was 50 below zero and I have the picture of the thermometer to prove it. It was cold but it was a dry cold!! I was given a glass of hot water to throw in the air. It immediately evaporated. Next, I used a frozen banana to drive a nail into a block of wood. I couldn’t find any facts about record temps in Fairbanks, but south at Delta Junction, some notable temps were; -72 on Jan 6, 1975, -66 on Jan 30, 1989 and -60 on Feb 23,1980. They also mentioned the schools close when it reaches 55 below. All the major cities in Alaska have a “salmon bake” This one literally brings ‘em’ in by the bus load from the hotels. All you can eat salmon and prime rib for $31.00 Capitalizing on its location, the local Harley dealer dubbed itself “Farthest North Harley Davidson” and Big Daddy’s BarB-Q claims title to “Northern Most Southern Barbecue” The North Pole is 15 miles south of Fairbanks and about 1,800 miles south of the geographical North Pole. It was incorporated Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
in 1953 and has about 2,000 residents. All of the streets have cutesy names like Santa Claus Lane, Reindeer Way, etc. The street light poles are shaped and painted like candy canes. The Santa Claus House is a must stop for all the tour buses and Santa is on duty daily. By the way, in Alaska there is no state sales tax and no state income tax. However some cities charge a sales tax. The city of North Pole is one. I know because I asked at check out if tax was added to my items. The lady answered yes. “So then it’s a pole tax?” I asked. Evidently she had heard that one before. Back in Fairbanks I saw a strange apparition, a car with a mast on top its roof. I made a U-Turn. It was one of those cars from Google.maps.com doing one of those street view 360 degree videos. I fell in behind him, waving, gesturing and other buffoonery. He noticed and made a sharp turn into a vacant lot. I pulled in and gestured for him to stop so I could take his picture. NO! He gestured back and took off!! The chase was on. He made abrupt turns and U-Turns, swerved over 2 lanes at a time to lose me. Eventually, he made a fatal mistake and entered a limited access road. I pulled up and took a couple of pictures of his car and camera and game over. I don’t know why he thought he could out maneuver a bike in town! I just wanted to ask how the camera worked. 15 minutes in the life Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
of a retiree with time on his hands!! Just out of Fairbanks is the Alaska Pipeline Visitors Center where you can walk around, touch and have your picture taken under the pipeline. The area was open but the center was not staffed. I didn’t have to wait long for a tour bus to stop and I invited myself to their guides 30 minute explanation of the construction and operation of the line. 55 miles east is Chena Hot Springs Resort. I rode out and back and wasn’t impressed with either the ride or the springs. North is the Dalton Haul Road leading to the Arctic Circle, the towns of Coldfoot, Wiseman, the Atigun Pass and finally the town of Deadhorse. There are several options to reach any of the points from Fairbanks. A shuttle bus to the Arctic Circle and back is $189.00. A shuttle bus that goes to the Arctic Circle, Coldfoot and return flight is $379.00. A round trip to Deadhorse is $428.00. A 2 night shuttle, stopping overnight in Coldfoot and at Deadhorse with a return flight is over $800.00. “Gravel Ready” rental cars featuring two full size mounted spare tires and a first aid kit are available for $219.00 per day. Or my personal choice, just beat up your own ride. I know its gravel and I just bought a $350.00 tire but its’ gotta be done. For now, I’m headed south to the Delta Junction and Haines Alaska. 59

A rider’s best friend. Why do so many riders choose Rider Insurance? Maybe it’s our great rates, excellent coverage, and hassle free service. Or the fact that our Claims Adjusters have motorcycle specific expertise. Could be our built-in accessories coverage, which is unmatched in the industry. -The Parts Slinger-
GETTIN’ YOUR BAGGER FISTS IN THE AIR Dean “Deano” Whitmire MRHD Recently, I was assisting a customer make a few predelivery upgrades to his new 2012 Harley-Davidson Trike when he mentioned to me how the handlebars were not at all comfortable for him. This is where I tell you that I am 5’7” and this guy towered over me like a Great Dane over a Chihuahua. I had him jump in the saddle and immediately noticed the stock bars would hit him in the knees when making turns, that’s when a light bulb went off in my skull. I introduced him to the same Harley-Davidson Bat Wing Ape Hangers that our sales manager had recently added to his scooter, and found it to be a perfect fit for him. That story came to mind when researching this topic and I wanted to share it with you to show that this style of handlebar isn’t just for the “hardcore” biker anymore. Not only will this upgrade give your ride a custom look, it can be comfortable too. Custom baggers are the hot trend right now, with an explosion of factory and aftermarket custom upgrades for all makes and models. This article is going to be specific to baggers with a Bat wing fairing, but most of the tips and tricks can be applied to any model. While performing my due diligence for this article I thought it would be a good idea to get a little history on how this style of bar entered our culture. So I jumped on the Internet and typed in “history of motorcycle ape hangers” and I got all kinds of different answers but nothing seemed to be conclusive to where they originated from. No matter what the truth is, they came from the mind of someone who was tired of the stock look and wanted to change it. That idea still lives on today, the only difference is we don’t have to fabricate it ourselves; we can buy a pre-made set and in one day have our pits feeling the breeze. Are they legal? Well, that is all relative to where you are riding at any given time. What is legal in Ohio may not be somewhere else, and vice versa. So to give you a more intelligent answer to the question, I strapped on my key board once again and surfed the web looking for Ohio’s golden rule. Current law states that one’s handlebars cannot exceed 15” above the seat height (I was unable to attain whether it is measured from the lowest or the highest part of the seat.) Currently there is a bill (H.B. 316) moving through the Ohio Congress to change this law. The verbiage in the summary of the bill to date reads as follows; “Permits motorcycle handlebars to be of any height so long as the height does not adversely affect the ability of the operator to operate the motorcycle 94
safely and the operator, when the motorcycle is not in motion and while keeping both hands on the grips, is able to turn the front wheel or wheels at least 45 degrees to both the left and right directions.” I am sure the guys at ABATE are working on this one and will keep us all up to date on its’ progress. If you want my thought on the matter, which in no way should be considered legal advice what so ever, the rule of thumb told to me by some in our great law enforcement community is if your hands are shoulder height or below than you probably won’t be bothered. Any higher than your shoulders and you are inviting a chance to be stopped and checked up on and maybe even ticketed. So you wanna put apes on your bagger, which one is right for you? There are several brands at the front of the line for your consideration. For a simple no thrills bar that will get your hands just peeking above the fairing then take a look at Harley’s Bat Wing Mini-Ape handlebars. The 12” tall bars feature a minimal amount of pull back, are 1” in diameter, accept internal wiring for a clean look and finished in brilliant chrome or satin black. For the same smooth rounded style, but in 13” and 16” heights go with the Cyclesmiths brand bars. They feature a diameter of 1.25” design to accept internal wiring, are about two inches wider than Harley’s offering and come in chrome and gloss black finishes. (The 13” in black are the bars I currently run on my Street Glide.) The other big name bar producer is Bagger Nation courtesy of Paul Yaffe Designs. His Monkey Bars have become a staple in the custom bagger market, and with their raw styling and sharp corners they will give your bike a truly custom look. Now for a little insight into these bars, they are 1.25” diameter bars that are designed for internal wiring, can be had in chrome or gloss black finishes and come in varying heights of 10”, 12”, 14” and 16”. The height of your bars will dictate what cables and wiring will need to be changed. If you stick to the 12” bar from Harley, the 13” Cyclesmiths bars or the 10” and 12” Monkey Bars you will be able to run your switch wiring with only having to relocate the plug location in the fairing. Otherwise, you will be shelling out more green backs in labor to extend the wires or purchase a pre-made kit, which will be discussed in just a moment. The clutch cable, throttle cables and your brake line will need to be extended. To take some of the guess work out, Burly Brand, available through your local authorized Drag Specialties dealer, is now producing pre-packaged complete cable and wiring kits for most Sportster, Softail, Dyna and Touring machines. Each kit is specific to a year range and designed for 12”, 14” 16” or 18” bars, and includes extended Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
throttle cables, extended clutch cable, extended brake line and switch wiring. The kits are packaged with instructions to help walk you through the install, and most kits are priced starting at $199. You can check them out on that thing Al Gore claimed to have invented at www.burlybrand.com. Ok, here is where it gets a little tricky for your ‘08 and newer models with “Throttle by Wire.” Your best and easiest way to rectify the problem is to purchase the “TBW” replacement unit from Harley that comes with extended wires. The stock TBW unit (as it was on my ‘08) has a plug about halfway down inside the handlebars; this creates an issue when internally wiring your new handlebars. In the case of my 1.25” diameter Cyclesmiths bars we reused the stock “TBW” unit and ran into some issues with fitment and the plug not staying connected, so I would highly recommend you replace it, and if you run any of the 1inch diameter bars you will have no choice but to purchase the “TBW” unit. For you do it yourselfers, the ABS equipped bikes will stop you short of being able to finish the job on your own. The design of the ABS system is laid out with one line running from the right hand side cover, up the backbone of the frame ending at the master cylinder. Then the other line runs along the same path but turns downward towards the front calipers. At a bare minimum you will need to acquire a new “upper” brake line from the ABS unite to the master cylinder and if you want that custom braided cable look then you will be purchasing the lower brake line as well to match. All ABS unites require an authorized dealer to bleed the brake system, as the ABS system requires a computerized process to complete this, with that program only being available from the factory to your HarleyDavidson dealership. While setting up your own bad bagger, there are a few other items you will need to consider changing or upgrading during the install. One item you will find that requires your attention
Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
is your rear view. Now depending on the height on your bars, what I have found from personal experience is that the Street Glide style fairing mounted mirrors become obsolete, due to the fact you will only be seeing your elbows in them. This creates two problems, how to fill the holes and how to see the cages riding on your fender. For the holes, you can use the basic black hole plugs Harley has produced (pt# 732 x2 and pt# 755 x2), the chrome or gloss black triangle shaped Cover Plates from Kuryakyn (pt# 3767 or 7210) or be creative with whatever you can find around the shop. Your new mirrors will have to be mounted on the bars and with that your choice will be mounting on top giving you the old “Mickey Mouse” effect or mount them below the grips to give you that custom chopper look. My personal recommendation on a great quality mirror that works really well is the Mini-Oval Mirrors from Arlen Ness. They feature a curved stylish mount with a thin elongated oval shaped mirror that comes in satin black or a chrome finish and with a price of only $49.95 each they are a home run. Lastly, a few upgrades you may want to consider when swapping to your new bars. Most likely you will not be able to save your old grips so upgrading to a new set would be a great idea. If you’re a chrome-aholic, I would consider swapping out the switch housings, clutch perch and master cylinder to the high quality chrome versions that are available. In most cases it won’t cost you any more in labor to make the switch, just the cost of the parts themselves. A painted inner fairing can be quite a costly investment but will make a huge impact on the overall look on your scooter. When you see how far you must tear down the fairing to swap your bars, upgrading to a painted version is not that crazy of an idea, plus when you swap the fairing you won’t have fairing mirror holes to fill either. Now all this info can be had on the World Wide Web or better yet hop on your scooter, twist the wick and head to your local Harley hangout to talk with your Parts Slinger to get your bagger fists in the air.

Early Spring and Ready to Ride!
With this gorgeous unexpected weather we are having our track has exploded with riders wanting to get some ride time in before their race season. It’s great that the long awaited MX outdoor season is here early this year and everyone is itching to ride. We have had everyone here this month from racers to joy riders and of course our ATV mudders who are always a joy to watch. Riders ages have varied from 5-50 and it’s a great to be able to re-connect with race families that we haven’t seen since early fall. We all plan race schedules and to see what tracks everyone is going to try out this year. The discussions often include what changes have taken place at the various tracks where we all race. Our MX track is getting ready for a modification. Norm is the equipment operator for the pro tracks and he is going to push around some dirt. Because of this the track will be shut down for a couple days. We can’t wait to see what Norm comes up with. He is making the jumps and track wider and taller and creating a total track re design. We are leaving the design up to him since that is what he does. Justin will be operating a front loader for a few days moving around some dirt. So we will have to impatiently wait to see the resulting masterpiece. We will make sure that the little guys who come and ride on their 50’s will still have fun, and we greatly appreciate Andy (a rider who visited our track last year) for his help on getting everything set up. Like I have said before, MX families are wonderful! You make mention of a problem or idea and they all seem to be right there lending a hand to help its awesome!! As the parents of a racer, we are prepared as prepared can be, bikes are tuned, serviced, and cleaned, suspension tuned in to Justin’s weight. Decals and Sponsors logos are put on the bikes and all the new safety gear is purchased. Justin even has his trailer loaded with all MX gear including extra parts and tools. And last but not least graphics are going up on the trailer today. We are ready to go for the next 7 months and after the winter we are looking forward to once again being with family and friends who support Justin, Jared and all the riders. It’s fun watching the boys doing what they love even though we don’t understand it sometimes. Everyone’s looking forward to a great race year for 2012 and are hoping also for a safe year for all involved. Now load up and get your ride on!

SHRIMP, BROCCOLI & SUN-DRIED TOMATOES LEMON FETTUCCINE 1 Box of Fettuccine 2 Cups of Broccoli Florets Apprx. 16 X-Large Pre-Cooked, Frozen Shrimp in a Bag 1 tsp. of minced garlic from jar in produce section 1 Tub of Philadelphia Savory Lemon & Herb Cooking Creme’ 1 Cup of Heavy Cream Small Palmful of Parsley 1 Can of Sun-Dried Tomatoes or if can only get ones in a bag, reconstitute in unsalted chicken stock. Cook pasta. Remember to add a good amount of salt to the water to flavor the actual pasta. Drain and add to a big skillet along with cooked broccoli, thawed and peeled and de-tailed shrimp and sun-dried tomatoes. Add heavy cream and stir in, then add Philly Lemon Herb Cooking Creme’. Stir until well incorporated. Turn down to low and just let shrimp absorb flavors for about 7 minutes. Serve w/ fresh salad and crusty bread........Delisioso! CREAMY COBB SALAD DIP 1 Large Tub of Sour Cream 1 Smaller Pkg. of Crumbled Bleu Cheese 3 tsp. of Lemon Juice (from those little fake lemons works just fine) 1 Avacado; depitted, peeled & chopped 7 Slices of Thick-Style Bacon; crumbled 2 Tbls. of Parsley; if using dried, be sure and rub it between your hands as putting it in dish to bring the kick back to it. 3 Green onions (scallion) stalks, minced 1 Large, Fresh Home Grown Tomato (large chop) Mix up all ingredients except tomatoes. But keep those in a separate bowl and refrigerate all for apprx. one hour to chill well. Just prior to serving, stir up the dip again to revive flavors and add the tomato chunks all over the top as a garnish. Serve with your favorite crackers or better yet, do on small slices of toasted, buttered, french bread. OuuuuuLaLa, Baby!

A SOUFFLE SO SIMPLE IT’LL CAUSE A SMILE & A DIMPLE 6 Xtra Large Eggs; separated 1 Tub of Philly Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread Preheat your oven to 375 and beat the egg whites in a medium ceramic or glass bowl on high speed until stiff peaks form on beaters. Then, beat the cream cheese spread in a large bowl with mixer until nice and creamy. Add egg yolks and beat again until blended and lastly, gently stir in egg whites a spatula-full at a time until well blended and all incorporated. Pour mixture into 1-1/2 qt. souffle style baking dish sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 25 minutes until top is puffed all up and golden brown. Sprinkle with finely shredded cheese of your choice immediately after removing from oven, if you so choose. Once you get this recipe down, there’s a 100 different souffles you can make, all this easy. PINEAPPLE TOPPED TENNESSEE CHEESECAKE 7 Honey Graham Crackers; finely crushed 3 Tbls. Butter or Quality Margarine; melted 1 Cup + 4 Tbls. Sugar; divided 4 Pkgs. Philly Cream Cheese; softened 1 Cup (tub) of Premium Sour Cream 1 Tbls. Premium Vanilla Extract 4 Large Eggs 1 Can Pineapple tidbits; drain well 1/2 Cup of Pineapple Preserves While your oven is heating to 325; mix graham crumbs, butter and 4 Tbls. sugar; press into botton of 9-inch springform pan. Use the bottom of a glass to press it down firm. Bake 10 minutes. Beat cream cheese and cup of sugar, beat in the sour cream and vanilla. Add eggs 1 at a time as mixing on low speed. Pour blended batter over pressed crust. Bake 55 mins. or until center is almost set. Remove from oven & run knife around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool completely before removing rim. Refrigerate for a full 4 hours. In small bowl mix up pineapple and preserves; spread all over cheesecake just before serving. This is really delicious with homemade whip cream served on top which is just confectioner’s sugar and heavy cream whipped like crazy with blender. Totally perfect for Mother’s Day! 135

The Mechanic A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley, when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc can I ask you a question?” The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I also can open hearts, take valves out, fix’em, put in new parts and when I finish this will work just like a new one. So how come I get a pittance and you get the really big money, when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic: “Try doing it with the engine running!” _________________________________________________
Happily Married Biker Biker Bob wakes up at home with a huge hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table. He sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Bob looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table: “Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love you.” So he goes to the kitchen, and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating. Bob asks, “Son, what happened last night?” His son says, “Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and delirious, broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door.” Confused, Biker Bob asks, “So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?” His son replies, “Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you said, “Lady, leave me alone, I’m married’!” 142
