FROM THE PUBLISHER Thank you for taking the time to pick up and read our magazine during the busy holiday season. In this issue, we’ve compiled some gift suggestions and shared a few projects that we’ve undertaken. We also begin to look towards 2018 and some of the exciting things in store for us as midwestern riders! To begin, though, I need to thank everyone for an incredibly successful and positive year. Thunder Roads Ohio continued to serve as the Nation’s Largest Regional Motorcycle Magazine – averaging well over 100 pages a month throughout the entire year. While many print and digital media struggle, we’ve been able to continuously grow and evolve with the motorcycle community. I believe it’s our commitment to the riding community and the organizations that support it that has allowed us to not only survive but succeed where others seem to be failing daily. As a grassroots media company we have always focused on the rider and our lifestyle. We’ve always sought to establish ourselves and make a name by actively supporting the organizations and riding events that define our riding community. In 2017, Iron Cowboy Productions and Thunder Roads Ohio actively supported hundreds of charitable events, non-profit organizations, and local businesses through our magazine and promotional efforts. We were only able to do this with the support of our sponsors and you – our readers! And for this, I thank you. As bikers, I believe that we have a better awareness of how we are all on this crazy journey together. That’s why, as a segment of the population, we are so much more charitable and willing to go the extra mile for others. This year, I’d like to challenge everyone to take the time and reconsider those around us as we run through the hectic season. With so many things going on, it’s easy to lose perspective and not notice those around us in need. Of course, there are lots of important charities and organizations that deliver critical services to those in need at this time of year. They certainly make a huge difference in the lives of so many, and they need our support. However, I’d urge everyone to look closer and consider those within our own lives that might need assistance and support this time of year. It’s so easy to become caught up with our own needs and routine that we lose perspective on the big picture and lose touch with even our own friends and family. They may not have physical or apparent challenges facing them and it might just be a greeting or visit that they need, but even that little effort could make all the difference in their lives. The headlines and media seem to deliver an almost constant message of conflict and disfunction in our society, and it can seem overwhelming. We can each, however, make a difference in our own worlds and those around us by simply taking the time to reach out. Take the time to visit family members that you may not have seen or heard from in far too long. Notice the service hat and pin on the greeter as you enter that big box store and take the time to sincerely thank him or her for their service. Maybe buy the cup of coffee for the person behind you in line, that looks like they are dreading the rest of the day. That little effort might make all the difference in the world to that person. You may scoff at all this nonsense and want to send off a nasty email telling me to stick to motorcycles and that’s ok. I’m just tired of hearing people complain about how negative the world is but refuse to do anything about it. Maybe you’ll be the grumpy guy that gets their coffee paid for, and you’ll have no choice but to smile at the irony then! And yes – the world will be a happier place then. When it really comes down to it, I’m just a broken biker; but I know that even I can make a difference in the lives of others this season. I’d urge you to consider how you might as well. “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.”

For the Rhinos! Iron Pony ride delivers! In just two short years, the Ride for the Rhinos has already become one of the largest motorcycle rides in the State of Ohio and is most likely one of the largest wildlife conservation rides in the nation. Conceived and hosted by the team at Iron Pony Motorsports in Westerville, the ride is a benefit for The Wilds – a private, nonprofit safari park and conservation center that covers more than 14 square miles in Cumberland (near Zanesville, OH). (thewilds.columbuszoo.org) Not only does the ride bring awareness to this relatively little known gem in our own backyard (one of the largest herds of rhinos in the world – is outside Zanesville?), but the ride actually delivers on its pledge to help support the non-profit conservation center. On November 10th, Iron Pony presented The Wilds with a check for over $4,600 raised by the 2017 Ride for the Rhinos. Way to go!

Snow on St. Patrick’s Day? FREE BIKES FOR ALL! Harley-Davidson of Erie offers FREE Harley’s in case of snow! Contrary to what many in Northeast Ohio may think, the center of the snowbelt is not Chardon – but actually Erie, PA home of Erie Bike Fest and our annual TRO / TRPA Bike Show. We’ve hosted this Bike Show for the last 3 years. Everyone that has spent time riding in Erie realizes they build them tough up there. The old saying “Only the strong survive” was probably written about a biker from Erie. I learned early on to pack fleece no matter what month the calendar said it was or how nice the weather was here at home just north of the West Virginia border, if my destination was anywhere near Erie, PA. It’s not uncommon for them to get snow in May and even June, something about being nestled next to the junction of the Great Lakes. So, it’s no surprise that they have consistently finished first or second in the Golden Snow Globe ‘Top 25 Snowiest Big Cities in the United States’ contest. To qualify, the city’s population needs to be 100,000 or greater. Not surprisingly, their arch nemesis is Syracuse, NY. Just a couple years ago Erie finished 1st, and over all they hold a steady 2nd place. 10

Harley-Davidson of Erie ran a special last year that they are repeating this year - Buy a bike from them between December 1st and February 28th and if it snows more than 8” on St. Patrick’s Day your bike is free! So, with that background, the idea of 8 inches of snow on St. Patrick’s Day isn’t too hard to imagine - they missed it by 1.5 inches and 24 hours last year! Snow total will be officially recorded at the

The Sport Glide Returns! H-D introduces a “new” lighter touring option. Harley-Davidson took another step towards their pledge to introduce “100 high impact motorcycles” over the next 10 years with their introduction of the new 2018 Harley-Davidson Sport Glide. Back in the early 80’s, the FXRT Sport Glide was a spin-off of the Super Glide, with a framemounted front fairing, windscreen, and hard case saddlebags. The new 2018 Sport Glide is based on the new Softail platform introduced earlier this year – which includes the MilwaukeeEight 107” motor, the new and improved more rigid frame, and the new adjustable mono-shock suspension. In addition, the Sport Glide features a new “mini-batwing fairing” that is mounted to the front fork and hard panniers. The hard panniers are quick detach, easily converting this light weight tourer into a cruiser. You can also go the other way and add a new HoldFast Detachable latch system – which allows easily add a box top Tour-Pak if you have the new accessory mount sissy bar. The Sport Glide comes loaded with a number of standard features including ABS, Daymaker LED headlights, USB charging port, keyless ignition, security system, and the new Mantis cast aluminum wheels.

You can find more about the new 2018 Harley-Davidson Sport Glide online at www.Harley-Davidson.com or at your local Harley-Davidson dealer.

It’s also worth noting that the Sport Glide comes in at a standard seat height of just 26.5” and a deliberately lower “standover height” achieved by redesigning the primary drive and exhaust system. The intent was to make this bike accessible and far more comfortable for a wider range of riders. 1983 H-D FXRT Sport Glide

NOW BOOKING TRO / IRON COWBOY BIKE SHOWS FOR 2018 Championship Bike Show Series expanding with MORE DATES in MORE CITIES! For the 2018 season, ICP / TRO plans on adding at least a dozen more shows all across Ohio. In addition, we will be introducing a number of new perks for those entering their bikes - more prizes, more trophies, and a few new twists that we can’t wait to share. We will be differentiating between some of the shows, setting up three tiers. The first are local bike shows – many of which will be held at bike nights. These shows are meant to get everyone out for an informal, ride-in show. Even if you’ve never shown a bike before, you can come out and have a lot of fun with these. Most of these shows will be primarily People’s Choice, with weighted judges voting added in as well. The next tier are the regional shows. These shows will kick things up a notch both in terms of the competition and the prizes. More intense competition, but also bigger trophies and prizes. These shows will also include a heavier judged component in addition to the popular voting from both those in the audience and those competing in the show.

Finally, there are the Finals / Championship Shows. These shows include objective scoring by professional judges as well as separate trophies and judges for the People’s Choice categories. These shows are meant to be objective and focus on more of the technical aspects of the bikes to really ensure that the “best” bikes win – not just the most popular. In many cases they are one in the same, but in other cases there are a lot of details and effort spent – which may or may not be recognized by the average enthusiast or fan attending the show.

We are now starting the process of identifying locations and partners for hosting Bike Shows in 2018. If you have a venue or represent an organization that would like to host a show, please send us an email as soon as possible. This past year we hosted a number of new bike shows as part of pre-existing events and rides. In some cases we even modified the format or classes to recognize particular aspects of the event. For instance, as part of the LCPL Daniel Deyarmin Memorial Poker Run and Benefit, we added a Military Tribute class to the bike show. It was a very popular addition to the day and offered yet another entertainment option for those attending. These bike shows are also completely turn-key in most cases. Just give us the space and we do everything else. If you’re hosting or involved with an event that might benefit from adding a bike show or have a location that you think would be a great spot for a Bike Show, we’d encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible. We can discuss the various options and work on locking down a date for you. To get things started, you just need to shoot us an email at BikeShowInfo@ gmail.com

“It’s always neat to go out there and see those old bikes.” Geo reflected, “Those Indian fours’ are really just awesome motorcycles, the knucklehead Harley’s, the JD’s, and everything else. Seeing those old bikes not only running, but racing is pretty neat. It’s great seeing the board track racers too. They are all going all out – like they are racing for the championship every time, taking each other out. Those folks are crazy, but they are having fun.” Anyone that’s ever been out to the Roeder shop will instantly appreciate the commitment and passion that the family has to motorcycling and racing. It would seem a perfect fit for them to take over and manage this exciting vintage motorcycle event – that brings so many of these old bikes to the track. “Scotty Brown has just really done a great job running the show out there. Always a great crowd and everyone has fun. It seemed a perfect fit for us, racing and cool old bikes.” “We plan on keeping everything the same, for the most part this year – open classes for just about anything vintage. For this year’s event, we have preliminary commitments from Steve Moorhead and Jay Springsteen to do the Showdown at Sundown as the showcase race – both racing on XR750’s. The Boardtrack Class will feature Brittney Olson and a monster 84 cubic inch Indian that she’s been working on.” “We’re an outlaw event, unsanctioned, and we can run just about any classes we want,” George explained. “As long as your motorcycle has two shock absorbers – we have a class for you.” “It’s really a great event, where guys can drag out their old bikes from 2030 years ago and race them around the track. You couldn’t compete at a modern event– but here you can race and have some fun.” Thunder Roads Ohio is excited to be a part of the event and will be sharing updates and features leading up to the races, so stay tuned for more in upcoming issues.

Federal Highway Administration appoints Motorcyclist Advisory Council AMA’s Mike Sayre to chair 10-member group PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The Federal Highway Administration has appointed 10 members to the Motorcyclist Advisory Council, which will advise the agency director on infrastructure issues affecting motorcycle riders. Mike Sayre, AMA government relations manager for on-highway issues, has been named chair of the council. “This is an important step toward ensuring that motorcyclists are deeply involved in the planning and implementation of infrastructure changes and improvements and that motorcycles are considered at all stages, especially with regard to emerging technologies,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “We are elated that our own Mike Sayre is chairing this group. The Motorcyclist Advisory Council can become a powerful mechanism for promoting motorcycle safety.” Sayre said he is looking forward to the assignment. “It’s both an honor and a great responsibility to be a part of this council,” Sayre said. “Every member brings a high level of expertise to the discussion. And I am confident that we will provide meaningful input to the leadership at the Federal Highway Administration.” Others appointed to two-year terms on the council include: James Baron, of the American Traffic Safety Services Association, Fredericksburg, Va.; Michael Crow, of the Kansas Asphalt Association; Fay Taylor, who is retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation; Dr. Chanyoung Lee, of the Center for

Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida; Eric Line, of the Safety Programs division of the Bureau of Highway Development at the Michigan Department of Transportation; Jane Lundquist, of the Texas Department of Transportation Design Division; Dr. Share McLaughlin, of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute; Joel Provenzano, of the Florida Department of Transportation; and Dr. Craig Shankwitz, of the Western Transportation Institute, Department of Mechanical Engineering at Montana State University. The first MAC meeting is Dec. 5 at the National Highway Institute in Arlington, Va. More information about the meeting is available in the Federal Register (www.federalregister.gov/ documents/2017/11/02/2017-23862/ motorcyclist-advisory-council-to-thefederal-highway-administration). The council was authorized by the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, passed in 2015. The council’s task is to coordinate with and advise the agency on such concerns as barrier design; road design, construction and maintenance practices; and the architecture and implementation of intelligent transportation system technology. Duties of the council include advising the FHWA on how to improve roadways for motorcyclists and providing a forum for developing and communicating information from an independent perspective.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, You will be reading this article near the first of December and for most of you, the motorcycle riding season is over. We need to start looking at next year and figure out how we can have a safer year and still have a fun year. This year we are at 136 fatalities on 10/01/2017. This figure is lower than the last two years to date and even with the two prior years. So here are the stats as I give them to you every month: 2016 we had 4005 crashes and 190 fatalities as of this date and 2017 we have 3248 crashes and 136 fatalities. Another year like this one having a downward trend can help our image as safe riders and show that we are being responsible motorcyclists. Remember, be responsible, take responsibility and ride responsibly. Every month I look at which counties have the highest fatalities; Cuyahoga County had 12 with 3 of them being alcohol fatalities, Lorain County had 8 with 5 of them alcohol fatalities and Summit County had 7 with 1 of them an alcohol fatality. All three of these Cleveland area counties touch each other. Franklin County (Columbus) had 8 fatalities with 1 of them alcohol, Lucas County (Toledo) had 7 fatalities with 1 of them alcohol, and Hamilton County (Dayton) had 7 fatalities with 1 of them alcohol. The challenge is to figure out what can we do

to bring these numbers down next year. You will hear more on this soon; help me if you have any ideas. Next year ABATE of Ohio Inc. will have spent 40 years being dedicated to the preservation of motorcycling. In this time we have worked to make motorcycles safer, helped to set up a fair licensing program, supported our rider training program and helped to enact fair and workable motorcycle laws. Even with all this work, motorcycling is still dangerous. So, you ask what can we do? Some “experts” say that if we quit riding we will have less fatalities. DUH! I feel that we all know that motorcycling is a dangerous lifestyle and to be safe out there we need to ride good equipment, get properly licensed and get trained. We also need to stop distracted driving! Making motorists aware that we are sharing the roads and we are not going away needs to be our focus. In Ohio, ABATE is your SMRO “State Motorcycle Rights Organization”. Join us to help keep the freedoms we have fought for. December is the last month of the Year of The Member. For only $10 you can join the fight. For only $10 you can give a membership as a Christmas present. If you want a magazine mailed to you, it’s $10 additional. Reading the magazine online is free. With your membership

you also get a free $3500 insurance policy. What a way to save our lifestyle and support your State Motorcycle Rights Organization. Go online to ABATE.com; call the state office at 800-25-BIKER or 614-319-3644. Want something to do or someplace to go? Take in some of our great swap meets or ABATE winter functions. It’s a great time to read up on some new accessories and put them on your bike. Don’t wait till spring to find out you need new tires. Find a deal and do it now. Just remember that if you buy them online, you will have to pay the long dollar to get them mounted and balanced. When the snow flies and its cold outside, get the wax out and make her shine. Well it’s time to close this year out. Kay and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And everyone please have a very safe holiday. This year was a good year and next year will be even better. Ride Within Your Limits Mike Stock Safety and Education Director 419-654-5446 Mikestock419@gmail.com

Legislative Report Greetings, All: As I stated in last month’s article, I met with Lt. Miller of the Ohio State Highway Patrol about traffic signals that do not recognize or change for motorcycles. We had a very pleasant discussion about this topic, with the result being that the OSP does not think a legislative solution is warranted. Lt. Miller/ OSP feels that if there is a problem with a particular traffic signal, it can be reported to ODOT and the sensors can be adjusted. While I agree that it can be remedied by adjustment, I am not 100% convinced that some sort of legislation isn’t needed. I need to do some research with ODOT to see if any records exist tracking instances of signal malfunctions and motorcycles, and then I need to meet with other Abate officers to plot our next course of action. In the meantime, you can report any signals that do not recognize your motorcycle to: Red Light Hotline-614-387-0722 and the Red Light E-Mail:biker.report@dot.state.oh.us. I realize this is late in the riding season, but these numbers have been posted on the Abate website all year. Since you are reading this in December, I hope everyone took the time to exercise your right to vote. I realize that these are volatile times in the political spectrum, which makes it imperative that we all take some time to research issues and candidates, and then cast our ballots. In 2018, Ohio will be electing THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

a new Governor, and I urge all voters to take some time to investigate the candidates and then vote your conscience. I will put together a questionnaire regarding topics and issues important to motorcyclists and send it to all the candidates. Most politicians are hesitant to respond to such surveys, but I am hopeful that some will respond. We shall see. Another topic I have mentioned in previous articles is the “ear plug” or hearing protection bill (HB280). Proponent testimony for this legislation will happen a week from this writing, but a month before you read this. This bill will permit motorcyclists to wear ear plugs to protect their hearing, something which is not allowed in Ohio at this time. I would like to stress that this is strictly VOLUNTARY. It gives motorcyclists the option to wear ear plugs if they so desire. Abate will draw up our position on this, and Safety and Education Director Mike Stock will testify on Nov. 8th. Stay tuned. We are now planning the 2018 State Legislative Seminar. It will be held April 6/7, 2018 at the Crown Plaza Hotel, (6500 Doubletree Ave,Columbus Ohio 43229). This is the same facility where Abate hosted the Meeting of the Minds a few years back. There should be a flyer in the December issue of the Outspokin, and you can contact me at the information provided at the end of this article for more details. The seminar is open to the public, so if you want to get plugged into what THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

is happening in motorcycle rights issues here in Ohio and around the US, as well as what’s going on in Abate of Ohio, please mark your calendars and plan on attending. Since this is the last article of 2017, I would like to thank all the Officers, on the State, Regional and County levels who have worked, and continue to work in the defense of all motorcyclist’s rights, to help keep Abate in the fight. A special recognition needs to go to Jim Elgin, outgoing Chairman of the Board for his outstanding work as COB and as a loyal member of Abate. THANKS, JIM!! One more shout out to Lisa Barnes for her outstanding performance as the editor of the Outspokin. She and all who assist her consistently put out a quality magazine that the organization can and should be proud of. No one knows what challenges face Abate and motorcyclists in the future, but rest assured we will be there, fighting to preserve our right to ride, no matter what. Everyone have a Merry Christmas, and a safe New Year. See you next year. CMA December, Oh Bother!

By now you may be fed up with all the advertisements of which product is the best to buy and which is the one your child wants the most. Perhaps it’s a jingle used by a certain store trying to make us believe they have the best prices in town. Story line after story line, buy here, get this, buy that, see the joy on your child’s face when they open this gift. And it continues on and on and on. The best gift has already been given. No one can match it. It is enduringly strong. It is unparalleled. It is unprecedented. It is indescribable. It is incomprehensible. It is invincible. It is irresistible. The price is the most affordable and no one can match it. The joy it puts on everyone’s face is incomparable. Its value is unmatchable. It will not rust away. Time cannot destroy it. Thieves cannot steal it. The word Christmas contains the very subject of this greatest gift. You cannot “x” it out because a double supported “x” cannot replace the upright cross which was endured on our behalf. Yes, this gift is Christ, God’s own son, given as a gift to pay the cost for our redemption and paving the way for us to return to God our Heavenly Father. Here from Luke 2 is the recording of Christ’s arrival: “In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and

they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” “So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.” NASB It’s important we do not lose sight of the facts about the first Christmas. Jesus came to us from God the Father. Praise Him for this wonderful, fulfilling gift which when accepted leads us to eternity in Heaven with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Merry Christmas!

PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE It’s been a great summer and the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN is winding down, in terms of the active Ride Stops and ride events. However, Thunder Roads Ohio is pleased to announce that we will be continuing SOCIAL MEDIA checkin’s and prize awards YEAR ROUND! Earlier this year, TRO added social media check-in’s – allowing riders to check in through their smart phones and social media at Ride Stops and events that Thunder Roads was it. Riders can continue to do this now YEAR ROUND, and we will award prizes each month to randomly selected check-in’s. As we head into the “off-season”, we encourage you to check in at any offering Thunder Roads Ohio or anywhere we’re at. You can also take a picture and post from your favorite ride stops – and simply tell us “This should be a RIDE STOP!” It has to be a publicly accessible ride stop – such as a restaurant, bar, shop, dealership, or other location of interest to riders.

Here’s how it works THUNDER ROADS OHIO / BUCKEYE THUNDE RUN SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s 1. 2. 3. 4.

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.

PLEASE NOTE - Some OFFICIAL RIDE STOPS will still offer Check-In boards, but most will only be doing this during the primary riding season.

State and Stop Prizes Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win! As always, the beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! 26

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.US. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • • • •

Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

It’s really that simple! 1. 2. 3. 4.

Get your Ohio Ride Card. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. And then you win cool prizes!

The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points or anywhere we are set up at – free of charge. You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com For more information on how your business,

The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners.

Onesies! We now have a selection of great TRO gear for our littlest Brothers and Sisters! From newborn to toddlers, we have a selection of cool stuff to start them off right. Visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio. com to see a selection of onesies or stop by our shop if you’re in the area!

Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves.

It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!

GIFT GUIDE

To wear or not to wear? Regardless of whether you choose to wear one or not, everyone should have a good motorcycle helmet. Here in the state of Ohio we have the option of not wearing one, but there are times when they aren’t just a good idea – but a practical necessity. For anyone that does long distance riding you’re bound to cross through a state that requires them, or you may run into weather that demands extra protection. The practical safety issues are something that every rider must consider for themselves. Certainly many choose to exercise their right to ride without – and aren’t in any rush to spend money on a good helmet.

A helmet is the perfect gift for many riders – something that they really need, but may not ever buy for themselves!

Sedici Strada Primo Helmet Today’s modern motorcycle helmets are a far cry from the basic buckets that turned so many away from these fundamental safety devices that can save your life. The Sedici Strada is a great example that is available for a great price when compared with other comparably equipped competitors. “This was easily the most comfortable full face helmet that I tried on – and it was great when riding. It never fogged up and the vents kept it comfortable even on hot days!” Available through Cycle Gear, the Sedici Strada Primo Helmet is a sleek modern helmet packed with features to make it more comfortable and improve your riding experience. The fiberglass shell is reinforced with DuPont™ Kevlar® to make it tough without making it heavy, and it has plenty of surface mounted ventilation. A quick release, scratch resistant, and anti-fog clear face shield. The Strada also has an anti-bacterial liner featuring 5mm of adjustability for a more comfortable fit. Own the road with Strada.

Features: • Fiberglass / Kevlar® lightweight construction • Anti-bacterial multi density linings • Removable and washable interior • Adjustable fitting with removable 5mm layer • Quick release cheek pads • Snell and DOT approved

Z1R Recoil Gloves

It seems as though all the gloves I have fall into one of two categories. Heavy insulated gloves that are cumbersome and difficult to ride with, or light weight leather gloves that offer little protection from the elements. It’s a frustrating choice that often leaves me simply punting and going with the heavier mechanics gloves. It seemed as though they were the closest thing I could find that offered some protection, but were practical to ride with as well. I then had the opportunity to try on a pair of Z1R Recoil gloves and the mechanics gloves have been back in the tool box ever since. The Z1R Recoil is a unique glove that offers great protection from the road and elements – yet still practical to ride with. It features an extended gauntlet that allows you to seal up the end of your sleeves on the outside, or can be worn under your jacket if you prefer. The wide-girth, long gauntlet provides extra protection from the elements while the adjustable, low profile cuff is designed to fit over or under your jacket sleeve. When riding conditions change for the worse, grab a pair of our Waterproof Recoil gloves. Your hands will stay dry and toasty thanks to the textile/leather construction with 3M Thinsulate™ on the top of the hand and 100% waterproof/windproof Hipora membrane. The men’s and woman’s Recoil and Waterproof Recoil gloves are available now at your local Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties dealer. Sizes XS-3XL. Suggested Retail $54.95-$59.95. These gloves and other Z1R products are available at these recommended shops and other Parts Unlimited / Drag Specialties Dealers. You can also go online to www.Z1R.com

Locking Oil Cap

I think it’s safe to say most of us take pride in caring for our motorcycles. Unfortunately, there are individuals out there who have no regard for other people’s property, and will potentially do something to cause harm or loss. This is why many motorcycles have alarm systems, locking gas caps, steering locks, ect.. One area that often gets overlooked is the oil cap. Think of how accessible and easy it would be for someone to put something in your oil. It’s the lifeblood of your engine. Sadly, there are people out there that think about doing something like that, and do it. How can you protect your oil from someone contaminating it? A locking oil cap is the answer. The Guardian Oil Protector™ makes a simple yet very functional locking oil cap for most bikes. Installation is a simple couple minute process. If you have a dipstick, simply remove it from your old cap. The new cap unthreads to allow for installation of the dipstick. Then simply put the cap on like normal, and lock. The kit comes with installation instructions, locking cap, and two keys. It provides peace of mind, taking the worry away that no one but you can access the oil tank. - Walt Snider, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor For the rider in your life, a Guardian Locking Oil Lock makes the perfect gift. A little extra piece of mind that they may not think of themselves. Visit them online at www.KBents.com to check out their locking oil caps and find one for your bike.

Do you ride sportbikes? The insurance industry tried to ban sportbikes before, but the AMA convinced the U.S. senator who introduced their bill that the insurance industry had no proof that sportbikes should be banned. Do you like to save money? Gear and parts from Bike Bandit, Schampa, ActionStation/Bohn Body Armor, MADMaps, AMA Supercross and Arenacross tickets, along with discounts on rental cars, hotels, and much much more. Do you ride in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in larger cities around the country? Though motorcycles were at first banned from HOV lanes, the AMA fought for, and won, the right for motorcyclists to use them as taxpayers whose funds helped build them. Do you have health insurance? The AMA is actively working to make sure that you can’t be denied coverage for injuries from a motorcycle crash. Do you like to ride without discrimination? When cities try to ban bikes from streets, the AMA fights back. For example, the AMA successfully turned back proposed bans in Chicago and Delray Beach, Fla. That’s thanks to AMA efforts to get Congress to pass a law barring bike bans on streets built or maintained with federal funds. Do you think motorcycles should be singled out by law enforcement? The AMA opposes the discriminatory practice of motorcycle-only traffic checkpoints in New York. The AMA is fighting a federal grant program to expand the program to other states as well. Do you want to improve motorcycling safety? Thanks largely to the lobbying efforts of the AMA, the federal government has launched a national study into the causes of motorcycle crashes, the first in three decades. Do you believe motorcyclists should be able to modify their machines? New laws in California and elsewhere aim to require stock exhaust systems from the bike’s manufacturer. motorcycle sound. Do you think motorcycle engine output should be limited? The insurance industry is pushing for these laws, and others that specify certain types of equipment, like anti-lock brakes. The AMA is fighting back. Do you think motorcyclists should have access to liability insurance? There was a time when many insurance companies refused to insure sportbikes. The AMA convinced those companies to drop their blacklists. Do you believe in freedom of choice when it comes to safety gear? The AMA believes riders should wear all the safety gear all the time. But the AMA also believes riders -- rather than government -should make the decision. Do you believe motorcycling should be protected?

Quality Boots

Far too often we scrimp on the little things that can really make a difference in our lives. And there’s probably no better example of that than when it comes to footwear – especially in terms of riding boots. Proper, comfortable riding boots can make all the difference after a long day of riding, working, or simply walking. Far too often, though, we scrimp on boots refusing to spend a few more dollars for a step up in quality that might transform our entire day. For something classy – nothing jazzes up an outfit like a nice pair of exotic boots. For ladies or men, stylish cowboy boots can transform your t-shirt and jeans outfit into the stuff of rock stars. When it comes to boots – there’s one stop that immediately comes to mind and that’s the Avon Boot Shop. Avon Boot is one of the coolest stops I know when it comes to finding cool practical stuff for riders. From quality leathers to an endless array of boots - Avon Boot is a great place to shop. For the guys, not only do they have boots - they just happen to have a nice selection of very stylish purses and other lady stuff for that special gift. GIFT GUIDE

GARAGE MEMBERSHIP

For those of you with a spouse, son, daughter, boyfriend, or girlfriend that has taken over your garage, basement, or even kitchen with a bike building project – here’s a gift idea that you might really appreciate if you’re blessed with living in the Cleveland area. Skidmark Garage is a 10,000 community garage that offers a lift, workbench, and tools for gearheads to work on their own projects. Yup, at their garage – not yours! Gifting them a membership might not only be the coolest gift ever – it might also allow you to park in your own garage over the winter! A double win – how cool is that?! Brian Schaffran launched Skidmark as Ohio’s first community motorcycle garage – a place where you can work on your own motorcycle with the assistance of other gear heads. Skidmark provides the tools, space, and a community of like minded folks for support. I’ve heard the phrase that it takes a village to raise a child – it’s kinda like that, with motorcycles. Tools and a variety of expertise are all available to help out as needed. It’s really a cool concept. They have a variety of membership packages – which are roughly $125 a month or $1,000 a year for a bike lift, work bench, and access to just about every tool imaginable. It even includes coveralls, shop rags, and discounted or free how-to classes on topics such as fabrication, welding, and vapor blasting. For more information, visit them online or friend their facebook page. www.SkidMarkGarage.com Skidmark Garage 5401 Hamilton Ave Cleveland, OH 44114 440-591-4822

GIFT GUIDE

THE HI-POINT TACTICAL CARBINES If you’re considering getting a firearm for the first time or possibly giving as a gift – you should consider these practical, economical carbines! Admittedly, one of the mysteries I’ve never quite got my hands around is why some firearms cost so much. Don’t get me wrong – I appreciate a quality gun as much as the next guy. As a pretty devout “Sig Guy” I am often mistaken for a firearm snob as I almost exclusively have carried either a Sig P226 or P220 for more than 25 years. These are both rather pricey guns. The truth be told, though, I’ve never really understood why there’s a need to pay more than $1,000 for roughly 2 pounds of metal. I can appreciate the craftsmanship of a well made gun and have pretty much chalked it up to paying for the experience and expertise of the manufacturer. I’m ok with that, but I still wonder why couldn’t someone make a quality gun for much less. Enter the Hi-Point carbines.

are full of exclusions and limitations, but apparently not in this instance. By all accounts and everything I’ve read – it appears as though Hi-Point goes overboard in accepting and resolving just about any issues found with their guns.

For the purpose of this review, we focused on two models of the carbines – the 995TS (9mm) and the 4595TS (.45) in the newly released Woodland Camo. With the 9mm we took advantage of one of the Hi-Point accessorized packages that included a forward grip and flashlight for an extra $50. Both guns weigh in at 6.25 lbs and are built around a 16.5” barrel. They have an overall length of 31” making it a fairly compact easy to carry weapon. They come standard with a basic sling and weaver style rails all over. The carbines have fully adjustable sights with the option of a “ghost ring” rear peep and large post front. The carbines accept the same standard Hi-Point magazines as the pistols which are fed into the bottom of the pistol grip, much like a pistol. One complaint that I heard and substantiated was that the after-market magazines don’t work well in the carbines. With the 9mm carbine, we tested out an extended ProMag magazine which was labeled as being for the 995TS. It wouldn’t feed at all. We had no problems at all with any of the

Hi-Point Firearms is a US company based in central Ohio which produces a line of reasonably priced handguns and pistol caliber carbines. The MSRP on the handguns range from under $200 to approximately $240 depending upon the caliber and finish. The carbines range from approximately $300 to $400 depending upon the caliber, finish, and accessory package chosen. All guns are manufactured right here in Ohio and come with a lifetime transferable warranty. In many cases such impressive sounding warranties 44

Hi-Point magazines. For the .45, we decided to order a package that contained two magazines and a dual magazine holder that attached directly to the stock. This package goes for $45 on the website and is pretty slick. One of the most noticeable things about the stock is that it features an integrated recoil buffer built into the stock as standard. I’m not sure how much of a difference that makes in terms of the overall package, but this is a very comfortable gun to shoot. I brought out a few other guns to fire for basic comparison at the range the first time out with the .45 carbine – and it easily was the most comfortable to shoot. In at least a dozen reviews I’ve heard the same phrase used to describe firing the carbines – and I echoed the same words. “It’s a blast to shoot!” I’ve never really put much stock into gun reviews that spend a lot of time belaboring the specific range results, because there are so many factors that usually go unmentioned. How was the gun set up? What were the conditions, wind, etc.. So, I won’t go into all of the specifics other than to say I consistently had 2-3” groupings all the way out to 75 yards where the sights appeared to be set at out of the box. When firing in somewhat rapid succession, my groupings expanded but still were fairly tight. The spring loaded recoil buffer and pistol caliber ammunition make these carbines very comfortable to shoot and

GIFT GUIDE

Upgrade Your Sound New stereo installation can change your entire riding experience. We are huge fans of older bikes. We like the way they run, the fact that they’re easier to work on, and of course the amount we save by riding something with a few miles on them already. If a bike is well maintained or you’re willing to make an effort to restore her, a bike really could last you a lifetime. In many cases, an argument can be made that the older bikes actually run better as well. There’s one glaring exception to the adage that “older is better” – and that’s when it comes to electronics. Technology is always advancing and offering new and improved options each year as new motorcycles come out. Additionally, the older stuff can quickly become obsolete or impossible to repair. Nowhere is this more obvious

or undeniable than when it comes to the audio system on your bike. We especially love our 2000 Road Glide and 2007 Ultra Classic Project Bikes. Both are great bikes that have been heavily modified to suit our riding style and work. However, both have outdated stereo systems featuring cassette decks and fairly shot speakers. Thankfully, though, this problem is easily remedied. We reached out to our friends at Columbus Car Audio & Accessories (CCA). They are a local, family owned business with almost 40 years of experience in the industry – having opened their doors in 1978. They specialize in mobile audio and accessories for any vehicle, including motorcycles, ATV’s, off-road vehicles, and even boats. There are countless options when it comes to stereo equipment of any kind – 46

from big box stores to small, fly by night operations. And you can always simply order things online and wing it from there. We strongly recommend however, that you reach out to one of our partners and deal with a company that specializes in motorcycles and has a solid reputation. You’re investing your time and money – and you want to make sure that you get the right product for your application. This is especially important when it comes to motorcycles, because the units should be designed to handle the particular challenges that come with electronics installed on a motorcycle. The units need to be weather proof – dealing with not only moisture but extreme changes in temperature. They also need to handle the constant vibrations which can quickly shake apart most electronics. You may find a “deal” online or at the big box store, but after you spend your time installing the unit – you don’t want to discover that it wasn’t really such a great deal after all.

We stopped into Columbus Car Audio’s Morse Road location and met with John. A former installation tech, John was not only familiar with the various products but how exactly they would go into our bike. After some discussion, we decided to go with an Aquatic AV replacement radio that supported Bluetooth, USB, Sirius XM and countless other options that I certainly won’t ever get to. This unit was designed specifically for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had a specific mounting kit and wiring harness that would allow it to seamlessly integrate into my bike. All stock hand controls would still work on the new system. To power the system and deliver the sound, John recommended a Rockford Fosgate Harley-Davidson Audio Kit which included a Power Marine 400-Watt Amplifier and Full Range Speakers – again, all designed specifically for HarleyDavidson motorcycles.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

Installation was quickly handled by the CCA Install Technician who walked me through the entire process from start to finish. And once everything was installed, he then took the time to make sure my phone was linked and showed me how it all worked.

It’s also worth noting that I discovered that all of the CCA Motorcycle Install Techs have their Motorcycle Endorsements and are real riders. So, while your bike is there, it’s in good hands if the need arises to move the bike. I wasn’t sure how much difference that really made, but it went to show how committed Columbus Car Audio is to the motorcycle aspect of the business. All in all, our experience at Columbus Car Audio & Accessories was exceptional and we certainly recommend them for all your mobile audio needs. We certainly recommend upgrading the sound system on your older touring bikes. Not only is the sound amazing, but the practical upgrades such as Bluetooth are game changing. No more playing with accessory cords or any such nonsense. You can throw your phone in the bag and still hear songs and get OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

GIFT GUIDE

GIVE THE GIFT OF ‘PEACE OF MIND’! Find It Now GPS Security System What do you give the rider or custom bike owner that spends a fortune on his bike and already seems to have everything conceivable added to his bike and riding persona? He has the fancy bike, the stereo system or GPS, and the side bags / panniers maybe even a Tour Pak – all loaded with gear and every accessory imaginable. How about the one thing he really wishes he had when he’s out at the Rallies, Bike Nights, or any other time he takes his bike out – or is simply away from it – peace of mind?

As motorcycle owners we can invest thousands into our bikes; and it’s all just sitting there – out in the open and vulnerable to anyone walking by. When we head out to rallies or bike nights, we park in a lot and then walk away. At larger events, it might be left there unattended for hours. Even simply riding out to a bike night or restaurant for dinner, entails leaving our bikes out of sight for an extended period of time and exposed to all sorts of risk. The truth is our bikes are incredibly vulnerable to theft – even when they are locked in a trailer or even in our own garages. In most cases a garage door just needs a sledge hammer or possibly just a swift kick to open it up. A simple bolt cutter might expose our rides “secured” in a trailer. Truly the only way to really protect our bikes is to keep them in sight – 24/7. The next best thing? Find It Now (FIN) GPS Security Systems. A FIN GPS unit provides a direct connection with your bike, wherever you are – and it makes the PERFECT gift for the motorcycle owner that seems to have everything.

be seen again. It’s been years, and I can’t help but wish I had a FIN GPS tracker on that bike. I would have been instantly notified that someone had moved the bike and been able to easily transmit the location to the police before they even parked it wherever they were going. You can bet I’m not going through that mess again – we’ve added the FIN GPS units to our bikes and recommend them to everyone we can. For more information and to locate a dealer near you, visit them online at www.finditnowusa.com. Or call 855-4-FINGPS 9a-5p EST, Mon-Fri. Paul Yaffe Chooses FIN/Find it Now GPS system for his personal bike and customer’s bikes.

The American-made, Find It Now (FIN) GPS units allow you to instantly locate your vehicle if it’s stolen – and will even send you a text or email warning if the bike has been moved, has a low battery, or the battery has been tampered with. It even has an internal battery, which allows the units to still operate even if power is interrupted. You can even use it to work as a virtual odometer and remind you of various service intervals if you’d like. We’ve installed these on our TRO Bikes and have been simply AMAZED by how well they work. We get notifications if someone even wipes the dew off the seat in the morning. If someone opens the bags or sits on the bike – I get a notice sent to my phone. Anytime I want – I can track my bike and know exactly where it is. Peace of mind – it’s an amazing thing, and I know how it goes the other way. We came back from a bike show and parked the trailer with a bike inside. We left it hooked up to the truck and thought it was secure. Surprise! Came in the next morning and the trailer, the truck it was hooked up to, and the custom motorcycle inside the trailer were all missing. Eventually the truck was recovered; but the new trailer and the one of a kind, custom motorcycle were never to

Paul recently wanted an alarm on his bike and contacted FIN/Find It Now GPS Recovery Systems and tried one out. It is still on his bike because he loves it so much. “I’ve used different alarms over the last 25+ years, but nothing compares to the function and features that FIN offers. I like it so much that I’m going to start offering them for my customer’s bikes”, Paul exclaimed. “I couldn’t be happier than I am with FIN...Thanks Find It Now…”

GIFT GUIDE

ESCAPE THE STOCK BARS! HeliBars Horizon Handlebars– “Handlebars for the Long Haul”® Stock handlebars are designed for one position on your bike and that’s meant to cover everyone. Unfortunately, we are all built differently. We also all sit differently on our bikes and reach out to the bars at different angles from different positions. This means that we end up positioning ourselves to accommodate the bars and the angles they force us to take. In most cases, this means that we are holding the throttle and grips at a less-thanoptimum wrist angle as well. This causes unnecessary strain and discomfort when riding – especially for longer distances, but what other options do we have? We can replace the stock handlebars with something new – which allows us to establish a new, mandatory position on the bike. It might be an improvement for the time being, but there are also a lot of times where we may sit differently on a bike – or at least want to. We need adjustable handlebars! But are there such a thing? Of course – let us present the Horizon HeliBars.

Harry Eddy, the owner and chief designer at Heli Modified, Inc. (pronounced “heellee”) has come up with a very sleek design that incorporates redundant safety features into the multiple rotational components. You don’t ever have to worry about a joint coming loose and you losing your bike. In fact, from the moment you open the box – you get a real feeling of quality from each piece. The Horizon handlebars are CNC machined from solid billet 6061 aluminum and solid, mill spec, low carbon steel and come in either chrome or black. It’s also worth noting that the entire system is built right here in the US at their facilities in Maine.

Horizon Bars are the name of the model designed for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. HeliBars were in fact, though, originally designed for Sport Touring and Sport bikes. As such they offer a tremendous selection of kits designed specifically for Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha motorcycles. On these bikes with more aggressive riding positions, the benefits can be even more dramatic. For more information, you can look them up online at www.HeliBars.com or call 800289-1047.

Adjustable handlebars are a premium luxury that the majority of riders might not consider getting for themselves – or they simply don’t know they exist! For this reason, they make an excellent gift for any serious riders on your list this holiday season! They will thank you when they discover how much more comfortable it is to ride long distances after they have the HeliBars installed! HeliBars are heavy, sleek looking handlebars that allow you to adjust the position of the bars and the brake and clutch levers. You can easily adjust the bars and grips along 3 planes - up and down, forwards and back, and in and out. They allow you to adjust the handlebars to accommodate YOUR riding position and the proper angle of YOUR wrist, rather then forcing you to position yourself in respect to the bars.

THE INSTALLATION We installed a set of Horizon HeliBars on our Road Glide Project bike. It seemed a fairly straight forward project and we found numerous great installation videos available on their website (www.Helibars.com). We still, however, turned to our friends at Renegade Gentleman Customs to assist with the install. Changing out the bars on a Road Glide is a fairly basic proposition – with the only real concerns being the length of the cables for the controls and changing over the controls themselves. After snipping a few cable ties hidden under the fairing, we found that we had just enough cable to position the clutch and throttle where they needed to be. For the time being this is fine, but we anticipate a “tech article” coming up soon as we swap all the cables out in the near future. If you’ve got a reasonable about of mechanical aptitude and the time, it’s a straight forward installation with all of the materials and information that is provided. As always, though, we recommend hitting your local independent shop or dealer for assistance if you have any questions or would like them installed by the pros.

Ed Hinchey, the Publisher of Thunder Roads Pennsylvania, also installed a set of HeliBars on his Harley-Davidson Road King to allow him to ride longer, more comfortably. “I tried a couple Harley aftermarket bar/seat combinations with no luck. The folks at Heli Bar promised their bars would deliver the comfort I was looking for - and they were right. I went from two hours of comfort to all day comfort. All my bikes now have them.” - Ed Hinchey, TRPA

Sitting on the bike and positioning the bars for the first time, you immediately realize how absurd standard handlebars are.

FROM ACROSS THE POND

Triumph offers a bit more grit and adrenaline with their Bonnie’s. D. A. SMITH, THUNDER ROADS OHIO

Triumph motorcycles are known for classic lines and concepts that have been well established over the brand’s 115 year history. It was somewhat surprising for many, when Triumph chose to look outside and draw upon the inspiration of almost 50 years of custom bike builders to produce a factory “bobber” last year. The bike seized upon the “retro” trends that are sweeping the industry and offered a cool reincarnation of their own bikes – available directly from your local dealer out of the box as an alternative to the 30-40 year old recreations offered by local builders. The results were clear – we loved it. The Triumph bobber was one of the best-selling models ever for Triumph in the US, quickly selling out the more than 1,000 bikes shipped across the pond and far exceeding expectations. “It was the fastest-selling motorcycle in Triumph’s 115 year history,” Miles Perkins, Triumph’s head of Brand Management, extoled. This is based on sales within the first 30 days of its introduction. For 2018, Triumph decided to double down on many of the characteristics that made the Bobber so well received and has delivered us the Bobber Black. It’s intended to be a meaner, more muscular and aggressive looking bike – while incorporating more of the modern touches that aren’t available on the 68’ Tigers being chopped down the street. 58

Other than the cosmetic “blackening” of the bike, most of the real changes are found on the front end of the bike. Instead of the previous 19” front tire – the Bobber Black gets a stocky fat 130/90-16 Avon within a stouter 47mm Showa fork replacing the 41mm KYB on last years bike. The Black also gets a pair of 310mm discs paired with Brembo double piston brake calipers. These hold back the 1200cc six-speed Bonneville T120 engine, which has been dialed in for extra torque to make the most of the Bobber intake and “custom” exhaust.

Note the small, one touch Cruise Control button below the headlamp switch

Most of the shiny parts of the Bobber have been blackened out – with heavy black paint, anodized, or black chromed. It’s a good look, and one that Triumph has really made an effort to take to a whole new level. They also offer the Bobber Black in either Jet or Matte, shiny or not. The Bobber Black also features a cool single button electronic cruise control and a new ride-by-wire throttle enabling two riding modes – Road and Rain. A one-level, switchable traction control system comes standard. Triumph also introduced an all-new Bonneville Speedmaster alongside the Bobber Black. Like the dark Bobber, the 2018 Speedmaster owes a lot of its styling to US customizers who have converted post war 50-60’s Triumphs into more Americanized cruisers for decades. It features many of the same modern conveniences of the new Bobber, in a more practical version with two-up seating and a larger fuel tank. It also features the fat 16” tire and stockier forks, along with the dual Brembo brakes. The rest of the styling is much more classic Triumph chrome and brushed aluminum, kicked up with white piping and black/gold pinstriping. Very classy. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

FROM ACROSS THE POND Triumph unveiled these new models as the centerpiece of roll out parties held in trendy locations across the country. In Cleveland, the new models were rolled out at a warehouse style art gallery with fan-fare - along with the announcement of a new Triumph Cleveland dealership opening in early 2018. In Columbus, the Triumph bash was hosted by Iron Pony Motorsports at the very cool CD102.5 Big Bar Room. This was our first time at this very cool venue, and the alternative rock station proved the perfect backdrop for the cool new Triumphs. As an extra kicker, Triumph also introduced us to their new 2018 Tiger 1200 and 800 – just unveiled in Milan the week before. Obviously completely different in style and purpose than the hip “customs” they shared the stage with – the Tigers were also complete overhauls packed with new technology and improvements over already popular models. But, we will focus on these in another model.

Life in a Box Our life is a demanding one. Our life is expensive. Our life is not without sacrifices. You noticed, I said LIFE, not hobby. Many clubs have an accommodation for when life takes a twist, and things are not as they once were for its members. One thing certain about everyone’s life, is that it has its difficulties: divorce, job loss, family death, medical issues, and unforeseen expenses. That’s life. In most cases, clubs offer a “time out”, to get things back on track. Some call it “boxing up”. Typically, that means that they can choose to leave the club for a specified period, put their patch & gear in a box, and come back when they get their $h!t together. That always seemed an odd concept to me. See when my old man and his club brothers started their club in the 60’s, he told me they really didn’t set out to start a “club” per say. He said it was just a group friends, and friends of friends who had nothing much in their life, except a motorcycle and a common attitude toward society in general. He said they didn’t set out to be the outcasts of society, they just were. And in any society, people of like minds band together to make the most of what they have. They shared protection, houses, bikes, drugs, food, wine, and women. So, see, it really wasn’t a “lifestyle” to box away from, it was just actual life. Now I see way too often, formerly patched clubbers putting their gear up, and walking away. How do you walk away from what is your life? If.. it is your life?! I’m not talking about taking a medical sabbatical. That is generally not the same thing. If you are fighting an injury, or disease, I fully understand not being able to participate in the daily club matters, but does that mean you are no longer living your life as a club member? But if you are having hard times, like your ole lady split on you, or you lost someone you love outside the club, wouldn’t you think that’s when the club family itself becomes even more important? You know what I see out of most who “box up”? I see them out drinking beer with their non-club 64

friends. I see them with their head up their new ole ladies a$$. What I don’t see is them suffering, to the point that they can’t currently function in the life that they live. As I said, in most cases, not all. Another thing I notice is that most who “box up”, never come back. Again, I said most, not all. I know very few, well, one who had to step out to beat a personal demon, and he did, and he came back and hasn’t skipped a beat. That’s rare. What I see in most cases, that when people “box up”, they gravitate toward whatever shiny new object that has collected their attention, and further away from the club. By the time the new object had lost its luster, they’ve been gone too long to get back into the groove. I personally see it used way to often for the wrong reasons in many MC nations. Then on other side of that coin, is some nations using it to get rid of someone

they don’t like in the first place. I can’t tell you the countless MC clubbers I have met in many nations, 1%er and down who jump at the chance to step on a brother’s neck at the first sign of weakness, if for no other reason than to use his back as a stepping stone for greater position for themselves. I find the practice disgusting, and it goes against everything related to the “brotherhood” claimed to exist by so many, yet expressed by so few in the MC world. Before you are so quick to leave your home for “life in a box”, I would hope that you ask yourself why, and if you really have a viable reason to abandon your club family, or if you are just using it as an excuse to get out of participating. Because if you are just a “participant” in this life, you’re not living the life anyways! Keep it REAL! My Road Name is Tabasco, and I approve this message.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT THE HI-POINT TACTICAL CARBINES (continued From P.42)

If you’re considering getting a firearm for the first time or possibly giving as a gift – you should consider these practical, economical carbines!

quick follow up shots were much tighter than just about any other rifle I own. During my first range trip out with the carbines, I also brought a rather basic AR (brand not important) and a WASR AK-47. Throughout my research into these guns and the discussion groups, I surprisingly found few comparisons between the Hi-Points and the AK’s. It struck me that they had a lot in common in terms of style, function, and basic purpose. Although they bear little to no resemblance to each other – it seemed to me as though they both were rugged, practical guns, that were designed to be inexpensive. Both guns have developed a solid reputation for guns that will take some abuse and still go “bang” when their triggers are pulled. The similarities end there – or should I say when you pull the trigger. The Hi-Point Carbines are an incredibly easy gun to shoot

66 66

and very comfortable. The AK is loud and kicks like a mule. The AR we tested was a lot smoother than the AK, but still couldn’t compare to the Carbine. Obviously, we are talking about pistol caliber ammunition compared to rifle calibers – but that is certainly nothing that the Hi-Points have to apologize for. Pistol caliber rifles have been around for years and have become increasingly popular recently. Back in the nineteenth century it was considered extremely practical to be able to share rounds between your long gun and your wheel gun. Now though, there are other considerations to weigh. In terms of cost and practicality, pistol ammunition is the hands down winner in many aspects. Rifle ammunition such as 30-06 and 308 can range from $.60-.90 a round for standard loads. .45 caliber ammunition was found on many commercial sites for as low as $.29 cents a round. Easily less than half the cost of the larger rifle rounds and even less than the relatively inexpensive .223 at $.38-$.44 a round. Only the bulk Russian 7.62x39mm (AK) rounds came in lower at an average of $.22 - $.25 a round. The 9mm ammunition came in at the lowest, though, of the calibers being considered. It came in as low as $.21 a round on the sites reviewed. So in essence you can fire the 9mm carbine 3-4 times for the cost of firing one round through one of the more traditional rifle cartridges. Cheaper ammo means more time at the range, more time practicing, and improved skills.

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

Speaking of ranges – pistol caliber carbines are also accepted at virtually indoor ranges as well. Pistol caliber rifles also have far less recoil and quieter report than rifles and even most handguns. Several shooters firing both the .45 caliber Hi-Point carbine and the AMT Hardballer .45 automatic commented that they couldn’t believe that they were the same round. The pistol kicked back and had a deafening report compared to the carbine. Ironically, though, while the carbine is easier to shoot – it actually increases the power (velocity) of the handgun cartridges dramatically over rounds shot through a pistol. In some cases the longer 16”+ barrel of the carbine increases the speed of the bullet by 100 to 300fps. This essentially supercharges the bullets – transforming the

9mm round to something equivalent to a .357 magnum in terms of ballistics. All while essentially making the round easier to shoot and more accurate as well. Considering everything we’ve discussed, I think that one could make an argument that the Hi-Point carbines are both a great recreational gun that’s fun and easy to shoot – and an ideal home defense gun. They are easier and more cost effective to learn than a full-power rifle. They have less blast and are easier to handle than pistols for many. For those smaller in stature and less comfortable with a heavier gun, these carbines offer substantial defensive firepower that they can confidently handle.

BEST FIREARM

VALUE

CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM RED DOT)

We’re all looking to get the most value from every dollar we spend. Fortunately, value is standard equipment with every Hi-Point purchase. No matter what environment or condition you find yourself in, there’s no comparison to Hi-Point firearms for rugged and reliable service.

CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM 4X SCOPE)

Whether you’re a varmint hunter, plinker or target shooter, no one else delivers so much solid, reliable performance, for so little. Hi-Point carbines are available in 3 hard-hitting handgun calibers – 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP; and Hi-Point handguns in 4 popular calibers - .380ACP, 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP. Maybe we are bragging, but we truly believe that handsdown, Hi-Point is America’s Best Firearm Value.

For those of you hunting in Ohio, you probably already know that recent changes now allow certain pistol calibers (straight wall cartridges) to be used for hunting deer during gun season – which would include the .45 caliber 4595TS. The final area that needs to be covered in terms of these carbines is really to compare them to other comparable firearms, which would most likely mean other pistol caliber carbines and rifles. Cost aside, I would already put the Hi-Point at the top of list in terms of practicality and ease of use. My only real complaints would be a rather stiff safety which I would expect to loosen up over time and a somewhat arduous process by which you have to break the gun down. Some complain about the aesthetics of the gun, but I would disagree. I think that it looks like a stocky, polymer rifle which are certainly all the rage. It looks like a rugged gun that you want to take out and shoot. While it’s not as “beautiful” as my Henry Big Boy .357 – that thing is really too pretty to even take out into the woods. Some reviewers extoll the style and look of the Beretta Storm by comparison, but I would take exception to that. Again, the Hi-Point looks like a tough looking gun that was designed to take abuse. The swooping Storm appears more like a blacked out Super Soaker in my eyes. For those of you that value such things, I think that the Hi-Point carbines certainly deliver the “aww cool factor” as much as anything I’ve taken out to the range or woods. Even when I first picked up the 4585TS at the shop, the clerk on the counter was enthusiastic and

remarked that it was “Best in Class”. When he opened the box and saw that it had the new Woodlands Camo pattern he excitedly called over the other crew members to check it out. And these are the guys that spend all day playing with $1,000 - $2,500 black rifles. As I said before, I would strongly recommend these guns regardless of their price. When you factor that in – there’s no comparison. Just about any gun that you might compare them to in terms of function and performance – cost at least $200 - $500 more. In some cases more than $1,000 more, for a gun that performs fairly comparable if not better in some cases. When picking up the .45 carbine I asked if there was another gun he’d recommend instead of it. Without hesitation he replied – “Not unless you feel like wasting a grand.”

SHOP TALK The ROAD GLIDE Hack

Things have been pretty busy around the shop this year, which is something we can’t really complain about. It’s somewhat surprising, though, to see how varied the projects are. From rebuilding a 1949 Panhead, to turning a stock 1976 Sportster into a bobber, or stripping the fuel injection off a 2006 FXR and going stroker with a carburetor. We seem to get just about everything, but it still caught us off when Derek at Thunder Roads approached us about bolting a vintage Vetter Terraplane sidecar to the TRO Road Glide Project Bike. Seemed like a crazy idea at first, but the ability to take a bike to shows and bike nights and include the kids, or even be able to carry the magazines and merchandise everybody loves and wants, made a sidecar a pretty practical option. Even if it was something that none of us had ever seen – a “Road Glide Hack”! After sourcing a sidecar in decent shape, the bike and sidecar were brought into the shop. We began by removing the fiberglass top and tub to allow full access to the frame. Overall, the sidecar was in pretty good shape – but it had sat for almost 30 years. The brakes and many of the joints were fairly seized up, and it was a safe assumption that the Terraplane had been mounted on a very different bike. We also then discovered that the original manufacturer is no longer in business. So we decided to simply rebuild or replace virtually all of the mounts and connections between the sidecar and motorcycle. In

some cases this meant fabricating entirely new pieces in order to match up with the new motorcycle. We started off by replacing the sidecar’s shock with a new one 1 inch shorter to lower the center of gravity and line up better with the Road Glide. The brake caliper was then rebuilt and a new brake line installed to tie into the Road Glide’s rear brake system. Cleaning and repainting of the rim and an inspection of the wheel bearing was also done. Now that the sidecar was mechanically good to go, we needed to figure out the correct position for it to mount to the Road Glide, and then fabricate new mounting plates and links. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’ll never use geometry outside of high school. Once everything was lined up properly, we were able to fabricate new mounting plates, and then fabricate the adjustable links to attach the sidecar to the bike. Everything was then painted black, including the frame of the sidecar. While the body of the sidecar was off, it was also painted to match the Road Glide’s paint. The carpet, seat belt, and seat were in good shape, so just a cleaning was needed. The canvas cover was dyed black to match also. New wiring and lighting were installed, along with a 12 volt power source. Everything was then reassembled and the sidecar was mounted to the bike. A couple of road tests and a few minor adjustments and it was ready to go. A trailer hitch and wiring were also installed on the Road Glide. The end result speaks for itself. It handles well and is a comfortable ride for the passengers. Personally, we also think it looks great and is quite unique. We’ve yet to see another Road Glide with a sidecar. If you attend any bike shows, bike nights, or rallies in Ohio next year – chances are that you’ll see it out with the Thunder Roads crew! Be sure to check it out! Just goes to show that we’ll do just about anything and everything related to bikes, so let us know what we can do for you! FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... Just before Christmas, two brothers were spending the night at their Grandma’s house. At bed time, they knelt down to say their prayers. As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, “Didn’t you get my E-mail?” It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner,”What are you charged with?” “Doing my Christmas shopping early”, replied the defendant. “That’s no offense”, said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the store opened.” On New Year’s Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. Well, it was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death. Statistics state 95% of all the Harleys ever made are still on the road. The other 5% made it home. Two riders camping out in a tent. One of them crawls out to pee before bed. Comes back all wet. The other rider asks, “Is it raining out there?” “No” He says, “Sure is windy though!”

As they closed their eyes, one boy said in a loud voice, “Dear Lord, please ask Santa Claus to bring me a Wii, a telescope and a new bike.” His older brother said, “Why are you shouting? God isn’t deaf.” “I know,” said his brother, “but Grandma is. It was coming up to Christmas and Sammy asked his mum if he could have a new bike. So, she told him that the best idea would be to write to Santa Claus. But Sam, having just played a vital role in the school nativity play, said he would prefer to write to the baby Jesus. So his mum told him that would be fine. Sam went to his room and wrote ‘Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy and would like to have a bike for Christmas.’ But he wasn’t very happy when he read it over. So he decided to try again and this time he wrote ‘Dear Jesus, I’m a good boy most of the time and would like a bike for Christmas.’ He read it back and wasn’t happy with that one either. He tried a third version. ‘Dear Jesus, I could be a good boy if I tried hard and especially if I had a new bike.’ He read that one too, but he still wasn’t satisfied. So, he decided to go out for a walk while he thought about a better approach. After a short time he passed a house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he wrote this letter. “Dear Jesus, If you want to see your mother again, you’d better send me a new bike. “

A blonde driving a car became lost in a snowstorm. She didn’t panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. “If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it.” Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. And she explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in a snowstorm, to follow a plow. The driver nodded and said, “Well, I’m done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy now?” Are you Christmas, because I want to Merry you Can I take a picture of you, so I can show santa exactly what I want for Christmas? What do you call a can wearing a Christmas hat? A Merry Can (American) Q: What type of cars do elves drive? A: Toy-otas. Q: What kind of motorcycle does Santa ride? A: Holly Davidson.

“Have a Joke? Send it in and if we use it, we will send you a ROAD CREW shirt! Email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com”
