FROM THE PUBLISHER This magazine should hit in the midst of Ohio Bike Week and as riding season really kicks off for most folks. Bike Nights hit full swing, and we have more than 40-50 pages of just motorcycle events and stops in this month’s issue alone. Even if you ride your bike year round – this is time when everyone else joins you on the road. We present this magazine as a resource for riders throughout Ohio – presenting more rides, rallies, bike shows, and other destinations than any other publication out there. It’s something we are proud of and hope that you enjoy reading it. As I’ve shared before, we are focusing on far more local, smaller events this year as we plan the routes for our Road Crew. We are hosting local Bike Shows all across the state and hitting more Bike Nights than ever before. We bring out the trailers, sometimes a few feature bikes – and we set up shop on the road. We sell a few t-shirts and other merch, but the real reason we go out is to connect with everyone. We want to always stay in tune with what you – our readers are saying, doing, and riding. That’s what keeps us in touch with what’s going on, and I can’t imagine how you could do it any other way. Just as we’ve encouraged all of you to broaden your horizons and consider new stops, new routes, and maybe even new rides – we have also looked to expand our own riding repertoire. (How’s that for a fancy word?) We are including more racing, off-road, and vintage events as part of our Tour Stops. Even if you are a hard core v-twin or dedicated metric rider, I’d encourage you to break out and check out something new. I’m not saying turn your back on your current bike or favorite haunts – but it always amazes me how many riders never venture beyond their local few watering holes. It’s a bike – a means of transportation. Let her fly! If you have kids, I’d REALLY encourage you to join us out at one of the local dirt tracks for a flat track race or a harescramble through the woods. The Dayton Motorcycle Club is hosting open track days that are informal and a great way to let your kids get a taste of what it’s like. (June 11, www.DaytonMC.com) Of course, you can still come out and see the dirt bikes even if you don’t have kids! I keep telling the boss that I’m not too old to start riding dirt bikes… and if I can pull that off, anyone can! To close, I would like to encourage everyone to join us online if you haven’t already. We have over 200,000 already on our social media pages – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Even if you’re an old timer and skeptical of such “new age nonsense” – you will quickly discover that it’s a great means of staying in touch and exploring the world. While you’re out riding, I’d invite you to share your travels and favorite stops with us and your fellow Thunder Roads Riders by simply sharing pictures and updates online. In your posting, include the hashtag #ThunderRoadsOH and it will link up with us. We will be sharing photos and checkin’s on our main pages and even here in the magazine. And if you’re at one of our stops – you might even win some cool prizes! (See page 22.) That’s it for me. I’m wrapping things up and looking to take advantage of some of this great weather… See you out on the road!

American Motorcyclist Association supports National Historic Vehicle Register Act Bill would create registry at Library of Congress to preserve records, history, culture
PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association supports a federal bill that would create a national register to preserve the records of historic vehicles, including motorcycles, that have made a significant impact on U.S. history and culture. The National Historic Vehicle Register Act (S. 966), introduced by U.S. Sens. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), would require the U.S. Department of the Interior to establish a register housed in the Library of Congress to preserve examples of American history and engineering innovation by documenting historically significant automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, and commercial vehicles. “As a long-time motorcyclist, Sen. Peters knows there are few things better than the freedom of two wheels on the open road,” said Wayne Allard, AMA Vice President for government relations. “Whether traveling cross country or just across town, motorcycles are a part of America’s transportation culture. “The American Motorcyclist Association thanks Sens. Peters and Portman for their leadership on this important issue, and we are pleased to support the National Historic Vehicle Register Act to help highlight America’s motorcycling history,” Allard said. The Historic Vehicle Association has been working with the Interior Department on the register proposal since 2013, and the American Motorcyclist Association has been providing support. The Historic Vehicle Association has documented 18 historic vehicles through the Interior Department’s Historic American Engineering Record. The record recognizes a broad range of historical engineering-related sites and structures, including bridges, ships and roads. The National Historic Vehicle Register Act would create a standalone register to preserve the records of historically significant vehicles that would include short narratives, photographs and engineering drawings of each vehicle. To be eligible for the register, vehicles must be connected to a significant person or event in American history, have a unique design or be a rare model. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends Ohio Bike Week 2017 is up and running as you read this article. ABATE of Ohio will be at Margaritaville all ten days. We hope to see you there. Ohio Bike Week is still down at the waterfront, out at the Fairgrounds, at Mad River Harley and at Margaritaville. There are a lot of activities around Sandusky to make sure we all have a lot of fun. Check it out at www. ohiobikeweek.com.
Motorcycle Ohio is back teaching classes every weekend. Go online and sign up soon at www.motorcycleohio.gov or call 1-800-83-Rider. By taking any of the classes you will find that there is something you’re doing wrong. They will teach you what to practice to keep yourselves on the road. Every year Motorcycle Ohio has kick-offs to start the year. They have two in June, so go online, check out the locations and take in a ride. It’s always a good time.
As we do every month, we are going to check out the facts. We have had a nice spring and the numbers are not good but could be worse. In 2016, from the first of the year to date, crashes 613 and fatalities 16. In 2017, crashes 445 and fatalities 14. This year we as motorcyclists need to pay attention to this fact - we are at fault 60.2% of the time. One of the major things we do is run off the roadway. The best ways to help us from running off the road is to slow down and don’t be distracted.
This is the year we need to watch the 3D’s. First, drunk drivers and drunk riders. Last year we did very well as riders - only 26% of crashes were alcohol related. Second, distracted drivers. Cell phones are the number one distraction and we do have distracted riders. Don’t be messing around with anything other than riding on that bike. Third is drugged drivers and riders. At this time I have no answer for this. Just don’t do it and especially don’t ride when you are under the influence.
Abate is always working to keep roadways safe and keep the laws benefiting us as riders. The only way we can do this is with members. This is the Year of The Member. We would like everyone to sign up a friend so we are giving 2 for 1, but really it is $10.00 a membership for a year. So sign up now and we will keep our laws helping us. Note - if you purchase 5 Raffle tickets you get a free membership, and if you’re lucky, a free Motorcycle. So at that I’m signing off. If you need anything ask, I will do my best. My goal this year is to get to more regions than last year. You may see me at your meeting or run. COB CORNER JUNE 2017 Mother Nature can be a fickle Mistress. April 29th, Regions 7 & 16 had their first Official Sanctioned Runs scheduled for this date and it rained cats and dogs. Region 7 received 3’ inches of rain and had to cancel “Back in the Saddle”. Region 16 had 20 hardy souls show up in the rain for their “Out of Hibernation Run” so they ran it. Albeit, a shorter route, but they did get it done. Outstanding R 16! We depend heavily on staging successful Events throughout the year to Fund the State Office. With a wet start to our Scheduled Riding Events this Season, we must double down and Promote the dickens out of our Remaining Schedule of Events, get the word out and push it hard. June, Ohio Bike Week (May 26 – June 4) is upon us once again, and the gracious folks @ Margaritaville have welcomed the ABATE State Products Trailer to be on their lot for the entire 10 Day Event, so I hope many of you Freedom Fighters volunteer to work with Region 7 to help staff the Trailer and bring us many New 16 16

THE ROAD TO MOTOAMERICA - Part two of a series Club racing is where TEAM DIETZ cut their teeth. As each boy turned 12 they got their race licenses. SV650’s were the bikes of choice. However, when Steven was ready to race his size posed a problem as he was much smaller than his older brothers. On the advice of seasoned racers (when in doubt always ask for advice from fellow racers) Steven started on a Honda RS125 two stroke GP bike. Although perfect for his size it was a difficult bike to race as the two stroke series was being phased out. It was a great platform to train on as it was light, handled well and with a light rider could reach speeds of 135 or better.
In the early days, there were no tire warmers only tents and a small trailer and after the remnants of a hurricane that came through at Nelsons Ledges one night, there were no more tents. The family moved into a larger trailer, moved the bikes out at night and slept on cots. Remember you had Mom, Dad and three boys so someone had to crawl over someone but you were dry and off the ground.
boys got faster. They got tire warmers, bike stands, lots of tires, a big load generator, etc. You get the picture. It was GAME ON as they competed against each other and beating Dad which Tim says, “came very quickly.”
All of this was a learning experience. Everyone pitched in to prep bikes. They all learned together to work as a team. The
Tim’s advice is to keep it fun and keep it simple. If the kids enjoy it so will you. Seeing one of your kids crash is the worst part of racing. It happens. It is difficult to deal with but with every crash is an opportunity to learn. Why did it happen? What can you change? And most importantly… how can you improve?
This is an expensive sport even at the Club Racing level and that unfortunately limited TEAM DIETZ to basically one primary club.
Team Dietz is truly that--a team. Mom Darci decided to get her motorcycle license on her own and has gotten some seat time via track days as well. They are in this together. The journey continues on the road to MotoAmerica. See you next month. As always ride safe, Debise Kennedy PHOTO CREDITS... Team Dietz Highsidephotos.com Photos by Marty

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT I would like to take this opportunity to ask all in the riding community to keep the family OF Nicky “THE KENTUCKY KID” Hayden in your prayers. Red Bull Honda rider Hayden 35 died as a result of injuries sustained after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a car on May 17. The 2006 World Superbike Champion had competed in World Superbike the weekend before at IMOLA (Italy) and was reportedly taking a bike ride for conditioning when the accident happened. In addition to Hayden the motorcycle racing world also lost AMA Flat Track Pro racer Jamison Minor on April 2. Jamison a New Hampshire native was killed as a result of a multi-bike crash on the first lap of the AFT singles race in Charlotte NC. CMA God May Smile
I am no authority on the subject or art of flat track motorcycle racing. If you had a teacher such as AMA dirt track racers: Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson or Wayne Rainey, you would undoubtedly gain a lot of information to improve your ability to ride like a champion. What if as one of their students you listened intently and agreed with them as they explained the process of improving your cornering ability. Then once you got out on the track you ignored everything they had been telling you. After, you got off your ride I’m sure they would begin to explain again what technique you needed to use. While off your ride you agreed and indicated you understood but when you got back out on the track you again ignored everything you were told and just did it your way. When you stopped what do you think the reaction of your teacher might be; but, would their reaction be the same if you went out and did exactly as they had instructed you to do? I seriously doubt it. Psalm 119:1-8, “How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the LORD. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart. They also do no unrighteousness; They walk in His ways. You have ordained Your precepts, That we should keep them diligently. Oh that my ways may be established To keep Your statutes! Then I shall not be ashamed When I look upon all Your commandments. I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments. I shall keep Your statutes; Do not forsake me utterly!” NASB Although the writer of this portion of scripture is unknown it is sometimes suggested the Priest Ezra may have wrote it. This
Christian Motorcyclists Association
Psalm is the longest in the Bible with 176 verses, which are broken up into 22 carefully constructed sections--each corresponding to a different letter in the Hebrew alphabet and seemingly stressing the importance of memorization of God’s Word and passing it on. This portion corresponds to Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. These verses tell us that if we live according to what God’s word (Bible) says, we will be blameless (innocent, exemplary). If we seek after God and do what we are instructed to do, we will be blessed. Our behavior will be in line with what God expects and we will do our very best not to disappoint God. Then as we look into God’s word we will not be ashamed as we learn more about God and His ways; we will apply what we learn about God knowing He will not set us aside. I’m sure a student of Kenny, Freddie, Eddie or Wayne who remembers and does exactly what they have been told when they go out on the track would put a smile of gratitude or satisfaction on the face of their instructor. Our instructor will encourage us because we listen and apply what we have been told. Undoubtedly it would improve our own skills as well. When we listen to what God is saying to us in His word He may respond with a smile of gratitude or satisfaction on His face. God will encourage us because we have listened and applied what we have learned to our daily living. God will not set you aside. Surely, it would improve your own relationship with God as well. PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer, we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride! The Way it Works: STARTING IN MAY, Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a rider has registered at the stop - their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-ins randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.
NEW FOR 2017: RIDERS CAN CHECK-IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-INs AND INSTANT PRIZES! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS. And it’s SIMPLE – 1. 2. 3. 4.
TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.
Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop Prizes: Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the checkins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The Winners: If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize, they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-ins. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-ins season long. • ALL CHECK-INs remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
For 2017, Thunder Run riders have the chance to win 6 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts, some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes!
BONUS Check-ins! The 2017 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over however, you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have a special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a way for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.
We want to keep things exciting for you, our readers as riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. 24

For 2017, there will be even more emphasis on Event Ride Stops. Rides, Rallies, Bike Nights, and Bike Shows will all be Ride Stops where you can check in to WIN! We will be adding a lot more Bike Night stops all across the state for more mid-week rides.
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors, Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else, we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. Please send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.
The RIDE kicks off MAY 10, 2017!
Some folks may sneak you in early, but please understand that we give a little time for people to get set up and everyone on the same page.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

NEW FOR 2017 - SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s Here’s how it works – At designated stops all across the state (see list on the following pages) there are RIDE STOP signs posted. When you see one of those, you can take a “selfie” of yourself in front of the sign with your card in your hand. You then “check into” the location with your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts and post the picture with the hashtag #ThunderRoadsOH It’s really that simple. If the staff at the location is busy, unavailable, or the place is even closed. You can take a picture and post with your card. We use the card to identify you – so please have the number visible. If we aren’t able to read the number we may not be able to notify you if you win. Also – if we can’t see the sign or easily identify your location, it will also be difficult to validate your win. Your best bet is to “check-in” at the location with your posting, and get a picture in front of the sign. It may sound complicated, but it’s really not. You will find that this is far easier and far faster in most cases. For those of you that don’t have smart phones, facebook, Instagram, twitter – or simply the patience to deal with all this. You’re welcome to still use the clipboard, which all locations also still have. Also – just a reminder that any location where we are set-up is also a Ride Stop. So, if you see our tents or the TRO Trailers someplace – you can pose in front and check-in! It’s that easy!

2017 Thunder Roads Ohio Championship Bike Show Series Bring out your bikes and show off what you’ve done! As motorcyclists, bikers, or whatever you want to call yourselves – our bikes are often our pride and joy. In many cases, We spend hours after hours, and often dollars after dollars making them our own personal ride. With all that time and effort, why not bring them out and showcase what you’ve done? To that end, we present the Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show Series. The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are encouraged to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals – they are all welcome to the show. Each bike show is also a qualifier for our Championship Shows – both the State Show and the National Championship Show which has been held as part of the I-X Piston Power Show the last several years.
Special Shows Notes – Saturday, June 3 Ohio Bike Week Bike Show, IMBBA Judged Show Saturday, July 16 Erie Bikefest Bike Show, IMBBA Judged Show These two rally shows are International Master Bike Builder Association (IMBBA) judged shows. The IMBBA Judges score each bike against a set of established industry standards and you’re able to get an objective review of your bike. The IMBBA includes some of the most well respected and recognizable names in the industry, in many cases these are the folks that have helped define the custom motorcycle concept as we know it.
“All of the IMBBA judges strictly adhere to a straight-forward set of published guidelines used to award points and all IMBBA judges go through a training apprenticeship, judging bikes alongside founding President and Chief Judge, Jeff Starke. The judges use trade standards to award points that define the bike’s Fit, Form, Function & Safety.” These shows are a bit more serious, but still welcome bikers and enthusiasts of all levels! It may seem intimidating to put your bike up for serious scrutiny, but you are the only one that will review the score and what the judges find. And it’s a chance to have a real professional to both point out opportunities and recognize the work you’ve done. In most cases, entry in an IMBBA show includes membership and you can earn points towards IMBBA
The vast majority of these shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include the “people’s choice” as well as a professional eye – preventing it just being a popularity contest. Some shows, though, are Judged Shows – with the guest votes simply going towards the People’s Choice Awards. All Thunder Roads Shows feature trophies and placards to recognize the bikes and winners, with special prizes being added in some shows in consideration of the location and hosts. The Best of Show Bikes and TOP Class Winners from the Bike Show Series are then invited to take part in the Championship Shows.

“The Future of Motorcycling: Fully-Enclosed Bikes from England” by Andy Tallone
This ʼ61 Triumph 3TA shows why they called them “Bathtub Bikes” THE FULLY-ENCLOSED MOTORCYCLE POSTWAR COMMUTERS England had been hit hard by World War II. Not just in direct battle damage, from bombs, strafing, and Hitlerʼs dreaded “Wonder Weapons”, the V1 and V2 rockets. The British economy was also in a shambles. Britain had spent a fortune winning the war, and had also gone deeply into debt. Now that hostilities had ended millions of British soldiers and sailors returned home, looking for work. Times were tough. Out of this hardship a pressing need emerged for cheap, utilitarian transportation to get to-and-from work. Most families couldn’t afford a car, and right after the war, there were very few cars available even for those who could afford them. During this era, commuter motorcycles sold in record numbers. Larger families might also get a sidecar. Those cute little 3-wheeled Morgan cars also came out of this era, along with countless other innovative, and sometimes odd modes of spartan transportation. Because of this, virtually every company building commuter motorcycles in England was doing well. Everyone seemed to need one and the market was growing. The “smart” minds in the leadership of many British motorcycle companies saw this as a never-ending trend. A few decided that there was room enough in this burgeoning market to start a new trend of their own. MOTORCYCLING IN THE BRITISH ISLES Immediately after the War, the biggest market for the British motorcycle industry was still the British home market. Everyone needed transportation and they were filling that need. The US market hadn’t kicked into high gear yet, so the design decisions were based on the wants and needs of the British buyer. It’s obvious now that the Brits didn’t fully understand the American buyer, at this point. That would come later. So, what was on the top of British riders’ minds? The weather. Itʼs ugly a good part of the year in England. Rain, fog, dirt and grime take a lot of the fun out of riding. And cleaning up their bikes after their commute each day became a ritual chore that many riders hated. Bikes back then didnʼt have the corrosion protection that we take for granted today, so without proper meticulous cleanup, these old bikes would start to rust very quickly. Several forward-thinking designers saw in this situation a new market niche.
48
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
The thinking at the time was to find a way to protect riders from the elements, and relieve the owner of the mind-numbing job of wiping down every nook and cranny on his bike every night after getting home from work. Enclosing the bodies was an obvious choice. Some went farther than others with it. Some decided to take it to the next step by adding a fairing, windshield, saddle bags and more, turning them into the first factory touring bikes. This design approach turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, it helped eliminate some of the wipe-down time. But only on the surface. Moisture and road grime still found its way into the interiors of these enclosures and worked their evil destruction (rust) completely out of sight and mind. The enclosed bodies also made routine maintenance and repair much more difficult. Some were made of fiberglass, but most were pressed steel stampings, and very heavy. While some of these enclosed bikes sold reasonably well in their intended market (the UK) from around 1955 to 1964, they never really caught on in America. In fact, most Americans hated them! If a Yank were unfortunate enough to end up with one, many would strip the bulky bodywork off and replace it with conventional parts. As the result, today in the US, original enclosed bikes are quite rare and command rising auction prices. Here in America, we enjoyed better weather for most of the year, and didnʼt have the big rust and grime problems that they did in England. We didnʼt need it, didnʼt want it, didnʼt even get it. Enclosed bikes bombed in America, which by this time was Britainʼs biggest motorcycle market by far. This failure in the US marketplace occurred at the same time that the market for these types of bikes was drying up in England as well. Cheap transportation for the British masses had arrived in the form of the 1959 BMC Mini, a car that didnʼt cost much more than a motorcycle. Commuter bikes almost vanished from the landscape. The “Bathtub” removed from a Triumph 3TA. One heavy piece of sheet metal. Notice how the rust has eaten through from the inside.

CHANGING TIMES If there is a one-sentence answer to why the British motorcycle industry failed, it would have to be “changing times”. The Brits were driven by tradition, and they were proud to a fault. While the rest of the world embraced new ideas, designs, markets, and technologies (the Japanese motorcycle industry, for example), the Brits steadfastly held on to their Old World ways. These enclosed bikes were actually probably a pretty good idea, to serve a market that was obviously there and hungry for inventory. But, it should have been treated as a minor subset, a niche in their product line that was constantly moving forward. The Brits liked to freeze time. Once they had a good design, they wanted to keep it forever. In this case, they thought they saw the future, and that for once they were actually ahead of it. But the future never stops, and the market for cheap commuter bikes came and went. With it, so did these interesting, and in some cases even beautiful enclosed machines. Letʼs take a look at how different classic British motorcycle manufacturers executed their enclosed bikes:
1962 Norton Navigator Deluxe 350 twin NORTON Norton is known today mostly for the 750 and 850 Commandos, but they came out with a line of lightweight twins in the late 50s in response to a change in British law that limited all new motorcycle riders to bikes with 250cc or less. The 250 Jubilee came out in 1958 and by 1960 was punched out to make the 350 Navigator. They offered an enclosed version which was called the Navigator Deluxe, which ran through 1965. It could well be the best-looking of the enclosed bikes.
1959 Triumph 3TA “Twenty One” 350 twin, first year for Bathtub styling. TRIUMPH Triumph developed a full rear enclosure for itʼs lightweight twins, the 350cc 3TA “Twenty One” (350cc = 21 cubic inches) and the 500cc 5TA “Speed Twin” starting in 1959. They were so bulbous that the bikes quickly earned the nickname “Bathtub Triumphs”. Thatʼs still what they call these bikes today. The package also included a massive full-valance front fender and a headlight nacelle. Triumph quickly realized that these bikes werenʼt very popular and so began cutting back the bodywork with each model year until it disappeared altogether by the time these bikes left production in 1966. The 3TA and 5TA were both Triumphʼs bottomline, entry level bikes. The sportier, more upmarket versions had conventional tanks, fenders and side covers and always sold well. The stamped-sheetmetal bodies were heavy and prone to rust, and were difficult to remove.

This ʼ64 Velocette Rogue had only an 8-horsepower engine. What were they thinking? VELOCETTE Velocette took the concept farther than anyone else at the time, perhaps farther than they should have. Known for big powerful singles, after the War they took a new direction with their radical LE commuter bike, an ugly little mutant with a pressed-steel frame and a tiny 2-cylinder opposed engine. For some odd reason, it was a runaway hit for Velocette. This speaks of the pressing need for commuter bikes in England at that time. They followed in 1962 with the elegant fully-enclosed Vogue. Despite its relatively lightweight fiberglass bodywork, it inherited the LEʼs 192cc engine which made all of 8 horsepower. What were they thinking? These are actually stunning bikes to look at close up. Their concept included coddling the rider in comfort and protection from the elements along with a place to put his stuff. Very familiar today, but no one seemed to get it back in 1964.

“The Future of Motorcycling: Fully-Enclosed Bikes from England”
The 1955 Vincent Black Prince was essentially an enclosed Black Shadow. VINCENT By the time Vincent introduced the fully-enclosed Black Prince in 1954, the company was one year from closing its doors. It was one more desperate attempt on Phil Vincentʼs part to revive the company. Alas it was too little too late. Despite being built on the bones of the 998cc V-twin Vincent Black Shadow, the worldʼs fastest motorcycle at the time, they were expensive and too exclusive to sell in the kinds of numbers that Vincent needed for salvation. The Black Prince offered riders a full fairing and windshield, leg protection and saddlebags, much like a modern ʻbaggerʼ. Today Black Princes are very collectable, highly sought-after and command stellar auction prices.
2016 Triumph Trophy SE, a modern enclosed bike WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ENCLOSED BIKES? Funny thing. Enclosed bikes made a huge comeback, starting in the 1980s with the Honda 750 Interceptor and today enclosed bikes are very common, maybe even the norm. The Brits had a good idea, but their timing was off. Coming into the 1960s, the British motorcycle industry was relying mostly on the US market for sales. And Americans didnʼt want bulky enclosed bikes. The fashion back then was the ʻstrippeddownʼ look. Americanʼs couldnʼt pull excess parts off their bikes fast enough. It took 20 years for it to come full circle. So, was their timing off, or were they ahead of their time? HONDA BRINGS BACK THE DARK CRUISER The NM4 Returns for 2018 after a one-year hiatus American Honda has announced that it is bringing back the NM4 for 2018. Ever since it debuted in concept form at the 2014 Osaka Motorcycle Show, Honda’s NM4 has been an attention-getter and a conversationstarter with its futuristic design. A modified version even appeared in the ultra-futuristic Scarlett Johansson sci-fi flick, Ghost in the Shell. Though Japan-centric in conception, the NM4’s anime styling has developed somewhat of a cult following internationally, thanks in part to the fact that the outlandish looks are matched by solid performance. The original limited-run bike introduced at the Osaka Motorcycle Show as the NM4 VULTUS, with its feet-forward design, was a sort of hybrid scooter-cruiser mashup. It
54
was based on the Honda’s Integra scooter, which itself has motorcycle underpinnings. The Vultus’ 745cc parallel-twin motor was connected to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. LED lights all around complemented the anime-inspired styling. While not geared towards outright performance, it was a project of fun and passion that brought twowheel motoring outside the circle of enthusiasts and riders. “From time to time over the years, Honda has pushed the envelope with unconventionally styled models like the Pacific Coast, Rune, Big Ruckus and DN-01,” said Lee Edmunds, American Honda’s Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications. “The NM4 is very much in this tradition, and while it’s not for everyone, that’s really the point; the model has proven to be a hit with a dedicated segment of consumers from a surprisingly varied array of demographics, including tech-savvy millennials but also veteran tourers and women. Those that buy NM4s tend to put a lot of miles on them, so we’re pleased to welcome it as our first street bike for 2018.”
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
While the NM4’s styling attracts some attention, the model delivers in the function department as well. A low center of gravity, enabled in part by the forward-rotated mounting of the powerful, liquid-cooled 670cc parallel-twin engine, results in a comfortable, light-handling motorcycle with a low-slung, feetforward cockpit from which it’s very easy to reach the ground at stops. The passenger seat converts into a flip-up, adjustable backrest, and the bodywork provides ample wind protection and four separate storage compartments. Gear changes are accomplished via a high-tech, smooth-shifting dual clutch transmission, which has standard and sport automatic modes but can also be manually shifted via handlebar-mounted buttons. Now that the 2017 Riding Season is officially underway and the bikes are once again rolling down the Iowa pavement, the wheels in my head are spinning out of control while my knees are being reunited with the breeze. All this fresh air and sunshine have led me to the conclusion that I could be rich if I wrote a book called “The Biker Code for Dummies”. “The Biker Code” is well known to many within the riding community; it is a secret unwritten code that I’m pretty sure a number of bike owners have never read. Hold on to your helmets ladies and gentleman, I take the biker code pretty seriously. I have sat alongside the road patiently waiting for the silhouette of a biker to crest the horizon in anticipation that a fellow biker will come to my rescue on more than one occasion. Needless to say, those experiences have molded some pretty stern views on the topic into me. Anyone riding a motorcycle that intentionally ignores a fellow biker stranded alongside the road losses my respect faster than Trump can Tweet. What really got me fired up about this topic is a story that I overheard at a local ride. It started out with 2 bikers going for ride. They were headed out for a 2 hour ride to a dealership because “Biker A” had made a deal on a new ride and wanted to go pick it up so he asked “Biker B” to join him. About 30 minutes from the dealership “Biker B” stalled out along side the road. “Biker A” was leading the way and just kept going. That’s the first mistake. I believe if you are the leader of the pack, even if it is a pack of 2, you have assumed the responsibility to ensure that your followers are following you, even Charlie Manson understood that. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
“Biker B” took it better than I would have; he assumed that sooner or later his buddy, “Biker A” would figure out that he had fallen behind and come back looking for him. After 45 minutes of waiting, “Biker B” assumed that “Biker A” would be at the dealership and a rescue vehicle would be coming for him soon. He even gave “Biker A” the benefit of the doubt by saying that he had cleaned his bike out to trade and probably didn’t have anything with him that would be beneficial in helping him get up and running again. I like to call this the denial stage in the death of a friendship. After 3 hours of waiting “Biker A” returned to the scene of the crime, all excited about his brand new ride. He had made his deal, got his new ride, the horns were blown, the confetti had been tossed and the champagne cork had been popped. More importantly he was now ready to lend aid to “Biker B” aka “his riding buddy” remember him; the guy sitting alongside the road for the last 3 hours.
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
At that point, my warped brain immediately hit the melt down mode. I have sat alongside the road waiting for help. I can not remember a single time that my own riding buddies or the group that I was riding with did not come back looking for me! If I was “Biker B” when “Biker A” returned, I would have been so excited about his new ride that I would have closely inspected it, asked all kinds of curious questions about the machine and inquired about how great of a deal he had scored. Then I would have asked him if he had his insurance in order and before he could even answer, I would have firmly planted my riding boot up against the gas tank of his brand new ride and kicked the Mo Fo over right there along side the road. I would then explain how that’s my insurance policy and that anyone willing to leave me sitting alongside the road for 3 hours should think twice about inviting me to ride with them again. Bring on the hate mail; I take “The Biker Code” that seriously. As for my fan club, I apologize for running out of space this month. I was really hoping to inform a number of bike owners that “The Biker Code” includes waving. There are bikers and bike owners; be sure you know who you are riding alongside. Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell Dead at 52
Temple of the Dog, Audioslave singer dies by suicide in Detroit hotel room by Ted Hollywood Heckman, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Chris Cornell, the Seattle-born King of Grunge whose dynamic vocals and guitar wizardry propelled the band Soundgarden to the forefront of the genre, is dead at 52. His death was ruled a suicide by hanging, the Wayne County, Michigan medical examiner said Thursday morning. For fans the event serves as the closing scene of a bad movie which began with the 1994 suicide of Kurt Cobain. Soundgarden was formed in 1984 and was the first Northwest grunge band to break into the mainstream in the early 1990s. The release of “Badmotorfinger” introduced Americans to grunge’s punk meets metal formula: growl ridden vocals, long hair, heavy guitars and flannel. Cornell started out as a drummer and played some guitar, but his fouroctave voice would see him come out from behind the kit and become Soundgarden’s enigmatic showman. In the early 1990’s, bands like Warrant, Trixter, Slaughter and Winger were being told to come home as the record labels were no longer backing their tours. In an interview from 2005 Warrants front man Jani Lane explained that one day his picture was up on the wall at his record label and the next it was replaced by Alice in Chains. Grunge mostly in part by Nirvana the aforementioned Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were the death Knell for hair metal. Chris Cornell was the driving force behind the newly discovered Seattle rock scene. It all begins when Cornell organized a tribute to a local singer named Andrew Wood who had died of a heroin overdose. The project “Temple of the Dog” brought together members of Wood’s band and a newcomer to Seattle in Eddie Vedder, who would soon join Pearl Jam. On the bands hit song “Hunger Strike,” it was Cornell who sang backup to Vedder. While Nirvana pioneered its own trail Pearl Jam and Soundgarden continued to define grunge and reshape the face of Rock. Soundgarden was akin to Black Sabbaths dark slow grind that came through in the 1995 album “Superunknown”. That albums song “Black Hole Sun” would win them the 1995 Grammy award. 64
As most bands do for various reasons 1997 saw Soundgarden break up and the members go their separate ways. It would be more than a decade later before they would reunite. After Soundgarden’s breakup, Cornell turned his sights on other projects including a solo effort in which the song “You Know My Name” was featured on the soundtrack for the James Bond film “Casino Royale”. Chris would also form the band Audioslave with former members of Rage Against the Machine. The bands second single “Like a Stone” would chart at number 31 on the Hot 100 chart and certify the band a Gold Album award. Through the years Cornell would open up about his troubled past sighting depression and substance abuse, including a drinking problem he says developed during touring with Soundgarden. Cornell who was married and a father of three, died May 17, 2017 in the MGM Grand Hotel, Detroit after what would turn out to be his final show with Soundgarden. He was found unconscious in his room by a family friend and was declared dead shortly thereafter, according to Detroit police. Initially there were conflicting reports coming out of Detroit, Michigan. Police spokesman Michael Woody said that a family friend had forced open a hotel door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor, but the Detroit Medical Examiner said the cause of death was suicide by hanging.
Elton John tweeted: Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell. A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man. Paul Stanley wrote: Stunned to hear the death of Chris Cornell. Music’s loss. Greater still, his family has lost a father and husband. R.I.P. Aerosmith’s Joe Perry reacted by saying: Very sad news about Chris Cornell today. A sad loss of a great talent to the world, his friends and family. Rest in Peace. Trixter’s PJ Farley reminisced about the time RA opened for Audioslave. “On tour with Ra we played a show with Audioslave, even at this time when his voice was giving him problems, still just a super talented, friendly {and handsome I might add} guy. Whatever the cause, it’s another sad loss.” My thoughts and prayers go out to his family as we say our last goodbye. On a cobweb afternoon In a room full of emptiness By a freeway I confess I was lost in the pages Of a book full of death Reading how we’ll die alone And if we’re good, we’ll lay to rest Anywhere we want to go God Bless you Chris Cornell. Rest In Peace
The band was in the middle of a sold out US Tour that was scheduled to run till May 27th, leaving six dates remaining. Cornell closed the show with what fans are calling a rather bizarre take on Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time of Dying” {search social media to find footage of the event}. Social Media was a buzz just moments after details were released about the Rockers untimely death. Some of the First to honor Cornell’s Legacy were Elton John and Kiss guitarist and lead vocalist Paul Stanley. Both expressed shock and sadness upon hearing the news.

Are You a Patch or a Punk? Far too often I am witness to a bunch of punks wearing patches. How does your club operate? How do your brothers conduct themselves in public? Do you ride out and hit some bars, go to bike nights and bike events, and treat citizens like crap? I see it way too often. Someone gets a pumped-up chest because a citizen didn’t move out of their way fast enough, or looked at them wrong, etc. Most of the time the citizen doesn’t even have any idea they did anything “offensive,” (usually because they didn’t). Many patches just assume that the common biker knows all the protocols or “respect” guidelines of MC’s, and they simply don’t.
If your club lacks a resource pool of potential hang arounds or prospects, it very well could be because your club has the reputation of being jerks. If your clubhouse is empty of friends on open house nights, it’s probably because no one wants to hang out with you. I’ve heard clubs say, “I don’t care if there’s anyone in our clubhouse except our club brothers”. Really? How exactly is it that they came to hang around themselves then? Probably because the brothers that came before them didn’t treat people as poorly as they do. Posturing, chest puffing BS typically has no place in the MC club life. There is a time to stand your club’s ground, and there are circumstances that require standing up for yourselves; generally, it’s not with the citizens of the world. Unless a citizen specifically calls you or your brothers out, they shouldn’t even register on the club life radar, unless to potentially offer an extended handshake in friendship, and possibly recruitment. Donations pave the way for everything. Political candidates could never run for office without huge donations to their campaigns. Humanitarian organizations could never offer aide to the needy without the kindness of contributions who respect and appreciate what they do. Your club is no different. Keep acting like fools, keep picking fights with people that don’t matter, and see how sustainable your club or chapter will be. 66
I’ve been witness to clubs who treat their “supporters” like crap; they bully them into “friendship”. If I must bully anyone into hanging out with me, I seriously don’t want them around me. You know who the guys are that convinced me that I might want to share a patch with them or join them someday? I can tell you that they weren’t the jerks who bully people or treat people like crap. They are the ones that when I hung around them, I thought they were cool. It was obvious they didn’t need me to be their friend, but they treated me like a king when I was their guest. A Guest; remember the value in that word “guest”. You bitch and complain if a hotel or restaurant treats you poorly. You say, “I’ll never go back there”. They act like they are doing you a favor to service you. Well, people who are guests of your clubhouse, or even of your presence out in public feel no differently if they are treated poorly by you or your club brothers. And when you continue to treat people poorly, soon the word gets around and no one wants to be around you, or your club.
dozen or more. You don’t need to push people around to try and look “cooler”. I’ve said it a hundred times: I like to be “approachably unapproachable”. In other words, generally citizens are not going to just walk up and start talking to me. In some circumstances I might sit down and share a picnic table with a few people at a public event, and I might break out in some small talk about the event or the band, etc. In most cases, people are often not what they appear. I’ve met many clubs in my travels over the past decade. Many I don’t even recall meeting, but it is interesting that when I may be at a public event, and some other club is there and I introduce myself, they act generally excited to meet me and they say, ‘oh yeah I’ve heard of you” or “oh we met at so and so rally 10 years ago”. I like to believe they remember me, and are genuinely happy to see me again because I didn’t treat them like crap the first time they met me. I have recruited many members in my club life, or they were recruited by another club brother when I was their leader. I like to think that some of these brothers who still share my patch years later, are here in part because I treated them squarely when they first met me when they became a hang around. You will do the future of your club a huge service if you stop acting like a punk, and start acting like a patch. Keep it real! My Road Name is “Tabasco”, and I approve this message. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Great American 2A Gun Run What do you get when you combine the fun of motorcycle riding with the challenge of target shooting? You get the First Annual Great American 2A Gun Run, taking place on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is your chance to get out on your motorcycle during a hot summer weekend AND support the vital work of Buckeye Firearms Foundation, including the FASTER Saves Lives program to train teachers and employees to carry in schools and protect our kids. This event is sponsored by Buckeye Firearms Foundation, the Columbus Chapter of the Second Amendment Motorcycle Club, and Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine. “It’s a poker run with a twist,” said Clint Lake, creator of the event and Training Coordinator with Buckeye Firearms Association. “If you’ve ever done a poker run, you know how it works. You ride from location to location and collect poker cards. Best hands at the end of the run win prizes.
“The twist is that you carry your concealed handgun and shoot at targets at some of the stops to collect wild cards and improve your hand!” The course is a little over 100 miles around central Ohio. Riders have 5 stops, 3 of which will be shooting ranges. At each stop, riders get one playing card. Plus at each of the 3 shooting stops, riders will also have 1 shot to put a hole in an index card -- at 20 feet, within 3 seconds, using a concealed carry firearm with a .380 or larger caliber. Riders who collect 3 index cards with a hole can turn them into 1 “wild card” to replace a card and get a better hand. The run starts at Vance Outdoors in Obetz and continues to Cap City Outfitters in Hilliard, C&A Harley Davidson in Plain City, Black Wing Shooting Center in Delaware, Bullet Ranch in Pataskala, then back to Vance Outdoors.
Lake said there are more than $1,000 in prizes. “Riders with the top 3 hands will win prizes. Plus we’ll hand out some instant prizes. But of course, the real purpose of this friendly competition is to support the charitable work of Buckeye Firearms Foundation.” For complete details and to register for the event, go to www.2AGunRun.com. The cost is just $20 per rider plus $5 for an optional additional rider. Those 15-year-old and younger ride free but cannot shoot for a wild card. “I could not find a sweet spot on my 2014 Harley Ultra for a comfortable ride on the back as we have air shocks. My wife and I met George (the owner) at an event in Ohio, he needed our riding weight with luggage. He put on a pair of Pro-Action Street Shocks and told me to take it for a ride— with no mention of money! How many people do that today? On the first trip we were close, but not what I was looking for. He made a quick adjustment and sent me back out. What a difference after a two-second adjustment! Now he said, you and your wife both go for a ride. She couldn’t believe the difference. No more slamming on her spine as we rode the same roads as before. George asked, “So, what do you think?” We both said, “Just amazing,” and he then asked if we would like a pair and we said, “yes.” So I asked, “What would you have done if I had said no?” His quote was, “Put your air shocks back on.” What a great experience it was to talk and deal with you.” Keith and Emily B. Ashtabula, OH

RECIPES
Pepperoni Stuffed Chicken w/Roasted Garlic
Serve 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)
Loaded Baked Cauliflower 3 tbsp butter 4 cups cauliflower, diced small (I use the frozen pre-cut cauliflower made by Green Giant) 4 oz sour cream 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese ½-1 cup real bacon bits (I buy the premade ones) 1 whole egg ¼ tsp garlic powder salt and pepper to taste Pinch ground nutmeg ½ cup ground pork rinds Extra handful of cheese and bacon bits for topping 2 tbsp diced chives (garnish) yy Preheat oven to 350 degrees yy In a frying pan melt the butter and add in the cauliflower yy Cook until tender then remove from heat and allow to cool yy (You can do this in the microwave, but I find the flavor and texture is better in a frying pan) yy Meanwhile, mix the sour cream, cheddar cheese, bacon bits, egg, garlic powder, salt, pepper and nutmeg together in a bowl yy Add in the cooled cauliflower and mix well to be sure everything is coat yy Pour mixture into a casserole dish yy In a small bowl mix the extra bit of cheese and bacon with the pork rinds and sprinkle mix on top of the cauliflower casserole yy Bake for 40 minutes until top is bubbly and golden brown yy Serve with chives sprinkled on top
3 large chicken breast halves 3 cups spaghetti sauce 36 slices of pepperoni (a few extra for topping) ½ pizza toppings (small diced onions, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, etc.) Optional-not included in carb count ½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded 1 ½ cup mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 tbsp dry Italian seasoning 10-12 cloves raw garlic, cleaned yy Preheat the oven to 350 yy In an oven safe dish, place ¼ cup spaghetti sauce yy Take each chicken breast and pound out until it is about 1/2 inch to 1/3 inch thick. yy Sprinkle flattened chicken with 1/3 the Italian seasoning, then spread 1-2 tbsp of spaghetti sauce over it yy Lay 12 slices of pepperoni over one end of the chicken, covering about half the area yy Sprinkle with 1 tbsp parmesan then 2 tbsp mozzarella down the length of the chicken yy Layer on any additional veggies you want to add yy Then starting at the end with the pepperoni, roll the chicken towards the other end, tucking in anything that falls out yy Place the roll into the prepared dish and complete the other two yy Pour the remaining sauce over the top of all 3 rolls, then add any extra pepperoni slices yy Sprinkle on the remaining parmesan and mozzarella cheese and toss the garlic cloves around the edges of the rolls yy Bake for 1 hour, serve over noodles or as is with bread! YUMMO! Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! -The Iron Cowboy

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
The two quickly became inseparable, but Yu’s father did not approve, for Rick was an outsider. By the time the motorcycle was finally up and running, Rick had fallen madly in love with Yu and refused to leave. Yu begged her father to let him stay, but instead, the magistrate had Rick banished from the town. He warned him if he ever came back, he would have him beheaded.
Once upon a time there lived an American biker named Rick. Now, Rick loved to ride his motorcycle, but was tired of driving up and down the same roads, day after day. A guy is sitting at a bar in a skyscraper restaurant high above the city. He’s slamming tequila left and right. He grabs one, drinks it, goes over to a window and jumps out. The guy who was sitting next to him couldn’t believe that the guy had just done that. He was more surprised when, ten minutes later, the same guy, unscathed, comes walking back into the bar and sits back down next to him. The astonished guy asks, “How did you do that???? I just saw you jump out that window and we’re hundreds of feet above the ground!!!” The jumper responds by slurring, “Well, I don’t get it either. I slam a shot of tequila and when I jump out the window, the tequila makes me slow down right before I hit the ground. Watch.” He takes a shot, slams it down, goes tot the window and jumps out. The other guy runs to the window and watches as the guy falls until right before the ground, slows down and lands softly on his feet. A few minutes later, the guy walks back into the bar. The other guy has to try it too, so he orders a shot of tequila. he drinks it and goes to the window and jumps. As he reaches the bottom, he doesn’t slow down at all....SPLAT!!!!!! The first guy orders another shot of tequila and the bartender says to him,” You’re really an asshole when you’re drunk, Superman.”
One morning, he woke up, and decided to travel the world. So he saved up some money, got on a plane, along with his trusty Harley, and set out to explore the globe.
Rick was devastated, he had no motivation to continue on the rest of his journey. It seemed as though there was nothing left for him in the world, if he didn’t have his beloved Chinese maiden.
For the next few weeks, Rick spent his days riding to and through some of the most popular European cities like Paris, London, and Rome. After seeing all Europe had to offer, he moved on to explore the rest of the world. Over the next few months, he rode through the African savannas, the deserts of Egypt, and even made it to the top of Mount Everest. He was having the time of his life until he reached a small town in China. Unexpectedly, and out of nowhere, a beautiful Chinese maiden crossed his path, causing him to fly off and crash his motorcycle. Apologizing, the maiden offered Rick to pay for the repairs and a place to stay while they fixed his bike. “My name is Yu! It’s an honor to meet you!” the beautiful maiden introduced herself to Rick. It turned out she was the daughter of a rich magistrate, so he spent the night in a small palace in the center of town. However, due to the scarcity of motorcycle parts, Rick had to spend several days in the palace, in the presence of Yu. Over the next few days, she took a liking to him and his strange American ways. As expected, Rick took a liking to her, too.
So he did the only thing any other sane guy would do.... Rick rolled back into town screaming, “I’m never gonna give Yu up!” Two women are on a transcontinental balloon voyage. Their hot air ballon is engulfed in fog, their compass gone awry. Afraid of landing in the ocean, they stay adrift for days. Suddenly, the clouds part to show a beautiful meadow below. As they begin to descend, they see a man walking his dog. One of the flyers yells to the figure far below, “Where are we?” The man yells back, “About a half mile from town.” Once again, the balloonists are engulfed in the mist. One flyer says to the other, “He must have been a lawyer.” The other says, “A lawyer! How do you know that?” The first says, “It’s simple, the information he gave us was accurate, concise, and entirely irrelevant.
