hen we launched Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine five years ago, one of our goals was to be more than a magazine. We wanted to partner with quality organizations, events, and businesses within the motorcycle community and help them achieve more. We wanted to be advocates and supporters of the local riders. We wanted to incorporate all aspects of our sport and lifestyle - whether it involved dirt trails, asphalt, or the track. We wanted to serve the riding community – in its entirety. It was our belief that if we dedicated ourselves to this approach, we would become an active part of the motorcycle community and not just another parasite living off of it. It is our goal to become an active partner and contributor to everything we do. We don’t just show up to take a few pictures and hit the buffet or bar – we become part of the team. Not every relationship starts that way or needs our involvement, but we try to make ourselves available for whatever we can. And in return, we hope to grow with our partners. It’s hard to imagine a better example of this partnership than the Rally Guide you’re holding. Ohio Bike Week is a locally owned and operated event that we are proud to be associated with. Just like us, they have always strived to take a long term approach and work within the motorcycle community. The OBW crew works long and hard to put on an event that has quickly become not only the largest motorcycle event in the Midwest, but one of the largest in the country. We are proud to be partners with them and produce the OFFICIAL OHIO BIKE WEEK RALLY GUIDE within our magazine. This edition of Thunder Roads Ohio is one of, if not THE, largest motorcycle magazines produced anywhere. It is chock full of ads and notices – probably more ads than any other motorcycle magazine ever produced. And I don’t apologize for that. Those ads not only allow us to produce a magazine of this size and distribute it to you free of charge, they also contain a lot great information that our readers want. They promote rides, concerts, events, and offers that you want to know about. The ads also represent businesses that are dedicated to serving the riding community, just like us. When you look at a big glossy ad for the dealership down the street, please recognize that they are placing that ad – not only to get their message across; but to help us deliver ours. Their support allows us to do our job and help support the countless smaller charitable organizations that you also find within our pages. We are all active partners, serving the local riding community. And we are grateful for the opportunity.

THE IRON COWBOY

STATE THEATRE THUNDER ZONE

O

nce again, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting a Bike Week Thunder Zone within the State Theatre in Downtown Sandusky. We are proud to help support the State Theatre and the work they do within the community. It is a quality organization that actively promotes a wide range of music, arts, and culture. We also welcome the opportunity to work again with a great team there. Our friends at Indian of Toledo have also returned as presenting sponsors of the Thunder Zone. We greatly appreciate their continued support.

D

avid Uhl will again be coming

out and setting up his gallery at the Theatre. If you’re a regular reader of our magazine or happened to stop by our offices, you should be familiar with his work. He’s often referred to as the “Norman Rockwell” of our generation, as he creates a sense of emotion and passion within his work. You can’t help but connect with his subjects as you are drawn into his paintings. I also believe that David’s work often conveys a sense of energy that is rarely captured on canvas. Riding and the artistry of iron is a perfect subject for his style, and I’m grateful that he focuses so much of his artistic efforts upon the motorcycle community. Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to help bring David Uhl and his work to Sandusky as part of the Thunder Zone. Staying with our theme of Iron and Artistry, we will also again be hosting a limited number of professional tattoo artists within the State Room of the Theatre. These are artists that we have found traveling the country and in many cases featured their art within the magazine. If you’ve considered getting ink at the rally, we encourage you to stop by and talk to the artists working in the Theatre. You will find that the setting is well lit, clean, and incredibly comfortable.

FROM THE BACK OF THE BIKE

BY NANCY BEACH

Want to get really excited about something? This time of year, there is a lot to be excited about….warm weather, new bike and old bike! Let’s break it down! Warm weather-We have waited so long and so deserve a great summer considering the winter we have had! Does anyone disagree? Didn’t think so! New bike- I know of many that are excited about their new ride. I love when someone gets a new bike in the middle of winter. It is a bummer that you can’t ride it right away but there is something so optimistic about getting a bike when its -12 degrees! It’s a little touch of summer! Old bike- That is looking good from all the wrenching you did over the winter and all of that tender loving care! But…there is one more thing that I personally am pretty excited about. Ohio Bike Week is here! Yes…it starts this month and goes into June with lots of fun things to see and do! Check out all the info right here in Thunder Roads! Poker runs, great music, good food and fun people! Island poker runs! How many biker events have island stops! What a way to start off the summer! Stop in and say “Hi” at the Thunder Zone! And I will be around, talking to all of you, hearing your stories for future articles and taking lots and lots of pictures. Flag me down because I look forward to meeting all of you…right here…in Sandusky for OBW! I have added a lot of pictures for you to reminiscence over or…if you haven’t been to OBW...pictures to get you excited to join us! You will not regret it and you will want to come back every year! So, pack those saddle bags and get ready for the biggest party in Ohio! And you know where I will be…with camera in hand on the back of the bike!

REPORT American Motorcyclist Association to host Ladies' Day at the AMA PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association will host Ladies' Day at the AMA: Workshops on Motorcycles, Gear and Riding for the New Rider on Saturday, May 9, at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame campus in Pickerington, Ohio. Supported by local partners and motorcycle dealers, the free event will feature several presenters who will answer attendees' questions about how to get started in motorcycling, motorcycle types, how to choose the right gear and information on safety training. "Sometimes it can be daunting for a new rider, especially a woman, to figure out how to get started in motorcycling," said AMA Board of Directors Chair Maggie McNally-Bradshaw. "Our goal is to provide women and young girls with the basics in a non-intimidating environment at this event." Workshops begin at 11 a.m. with the types of motorcycles on the market, then at noon a presentation will be made on various training options available to learn how to ride and become a better rider. At 1 p.m., the basic mechanics of a motorcycle will be presented, and, at 2 p.m., a presenter will discuss the types of riding gear available. Following that, at 3 p.m., there will be an open Q&A session. The event will offer the opportunity to try on gear and view street bikes/dirt bikes brought by local motorcycle dealers. Attendees can also speak with dealers and industry experts to get their riding questions answered. Also, attendees will have the chance to view demonstrations of exercises performed in rider training courses Bring the whole family! ABATE OF OHIO, INC. Legislative Report

I

would like to thank everyone that attended, participated in, presented a session, and sponsored the ABATE of Ohio State Seminar. Also an extra big thank you to Robin Biltz-Pickens for all her hard work in organizing the event. Great job RBP! Thank you. During the legislative session we discussed several issues. I will not completely cover all the points discussed in this article. I will hit the highlights. On the Road Guard Bill, it will be reintroduced this year. Most of the pushback we had on the bill can be taken care of with some added wording to the bill. Financial liability in case of an accident is an issue on this bill that may take some work. We discussed changing the maximum height of handlebars to making any height legal as long as it can be operated safely. This is similar to several other states’ handlebar laws. The handlebar law was changed in Ohio to shoulder high 4 years ago. This is not enough time to convince law makers to go the next step. I’m not saying we will be opposed to a bill that

Safety & Education Report

H

i Friends, Well the year is just getting started and the figures are starting to come in. Remember that the facts I get are depending on when the Police report is finalized and they do get changed along the way. The facts for last year at this date: 2014 crashes 180 and fatalities 6 and 2015 crashes 98 and fatalities 3. In the past 5 years we have had a steady decline in fatalities. This has been done by reminding ourselves that we too must be alert and then remind our friends to do the same. Please ride safe! This year at the ABATE State Seminar we had the honor of ODOT’s Michelle May giving us a report on how ODOT is taking care of our highways. Whenever any changes are made in our highways, motorcycles are taken into the scope of things. She also gave us many pages of facts that helped us get an overall view of the history of car and motorcycle crashes and their causes. We did have Q and A period and many issues were brought up. Michelle did take notes at this time and assured us that she will check out the problems we told her about and get back to us. One issue that was brought up is cable barriers. She explained how they do save lives and how they put a lot of thought in the placement of them. Even though they scare a motorcyclist, the facts prove they do more good than harm. If you ever see any problem with our roads that you want reported, you can email ODOT at the state level or let your local garage know. At the next BOD we will be passing out a fact sheet of Michelle’s info. Also we had Chuck Stiteler from the Motorcycle Ohio Program (MO Program). Chuck was an instructor and knows the program well, and he does answer his phone. He gave us a very up to date report on what they are doing. The thing that I feel will bring a great change is that they will give a one day course that will get you an Endorsement. This is for riders that just keep getting temporaries and have a lot saddle time. This program will be starting in July. And as in the past, they need more instructors. If

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

would legalize the higher handlebars in the future. It is too soon to make the case that we need to take the next step. We discussed legislation making it legal to turn left on red at a traffic light that will not change. We decided not to pursue this type of legislation because of some issues this type of legislation has caused in other states, including battling mandatory helmet laws. We discussed lane splitting. At this point we haven’t seen a need for making this type of activity legal in Ohio. Since the seminar, I have learned of HB 93 that creates a Breast Cancer Awareness motorcycle license plate. I will be providing testimony in support of this bill. Any questions on these issues feel free to email me at legislativedirector@abate.com. Scott “Woody” Wood Regards, State Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. you want a job and to make some money - get signed up. They also have more mobile sites this year than ever before so you can take advantage of these classes. I would like to personally thank everyone that presented a program and attended the 2015 State Seminar this year it was very informative and also a lot of fun. Watch for it next year. You will learn a lot. Thank you! When you all get to read this article we will be heading to the 2015 Motorcycle Awareness Rally. This is the kick off for the Motorcycle riding season. And then I hope to see all of you at the After Rally Party. The entire day is a great time and you get to ride in a great parade to the State House, hear the reading of the proclamations and listen to a guest speaker. Hope to see you there. June Jam is ABATE’s state party where we take a weekend to raise money for our cause, listen to great music and play games. The location is at Kaeppner Woods in Logan. There is great camping and the location has some of the best riding in Ohio. Admission is only $25.00 for three days of fun. For more info go to the ABATE of Ohio web site, ABATE.com, where you can find the flier and a pre-registration form. I would like to remind everyone that it’s a new riding season and we all need to start out slow. Let the motorists get used to us being on the road again. Remember before every ride, perform a safety check. Ride alert, wear the right gear and get trained. Have a safe ride. Last of all, if you do not belong to a Motorcycle Rights Organization, check ABATE of Ohio Inc. out. We are dedicated to the preservation of motorcycling. We keep you FREE. See you down the road. CMA

Where the Rubber Hits the Road t’s been said a motorcyclist actually rides on a patch of Irubber only about 2 or 3 inches

square for each tire. It doesn’t matter if you have a 12 inch or 30 inch wheel. That contact patch is essentially the same, only about a 2 or 3 inch square patch is all the contact spot you have with the road to give you all your maneuverability while riding your scoot. If you are riding a three wheeler that may increase a little because of the use of regular cagier tires affording you a wider tire than the standard 2 wheeler, but the principle is still the same. There is only a small contact patch of those tires affording you all the control. That contact patch is one of, if not the most, important parts of your riding experience. Maintaining that contact patch is of utmost importance. We do that in several ways: good tire tread depth; proper tire pressure; right tire design for your bike and type of riding; and a good quality tire. Without proper maintenance of this contact patch we could find ourselves in a world of hurt. Our daily lives are much the same. God has created us for a purpose and a good purpose at that. The only way to know what that good purpose is and to know how to pursue that purpose is to have a good contact patch with the Lord keeping it well maintained. That contact patch with God is maintained through DTG (Daily Time with God). Daniel knew this was important and in Daniel 6:10, NASB, “Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.” This happened after King Darius was convinced to sign a document that no one was to make a request of any god or man besides the king himself for 30 days or be cast into the lions’ den. See Daniel knew he needed to maintain his contact patch with God in order to maintain his skills and walk in life with God. As a result Daniel continued to pray 3 times each day to the God of Israel. Daniel was faithful to God and God was faithful to Daniel. As a result of the signed document which the king could not change, Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den. God protected Daniel from 20

the lions and on the following morning King Darius ran to the den asking if Daniel was alright, and he was. Then the king ordered those who persuaded him to sign the document to be thrown into the same lion’s den along with their families and before they reached the bottom of the lion’s den the lions crushed all their bones. For you and I this shows the importance of our own DTG (Daily Time with God) and it shows the benefits. Trust in God, communicate with God, seek God daily, and He will not fail you. PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

E

ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated

24

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!.

State and Stop Prizes

E

very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

I

f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week® Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2014, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, hundreds of VIP Passes and tickets to some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and hundreds of other great prizes!

2015 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!

T

he 2015 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

Y

ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. We have all new cards for 2015. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added

value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

Just Get Out and RIDE!

O

ne of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive.

Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

The RIDE kicks off in MAY! Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! 26

MOTORCYCLE 101 The History of Motorcycles PART 4 At this point in our journey, the Wright Brothers are making quite a name for themselves buzzing around the skies, and Model T’s are rolling off Henry Ford’s assembly lines. But what is happening in the world of two wheels? The early 1900’s continued to bring changes to the motorcycle world. Once manufacturers had tackled the basic change over from bicycle to motorcycle, the need to start improving took over. There was an aspect of the pre-war production era that was not included in last month’s installment, that simply cannot be excluded from the evolution of these beloved machines…racing. The new sport of motorcycle racing began drawing large crowds bent on celebrating our piston powered future. And with racing came an increased need for comfort, safety, and of course speed. While numerous small companies throughout Europe were involved in the racing industry, many operated only a short time before ceasing production. One highly notable advancement that came from across the pond occurred in 1908, the development of telescopic pneumatic suspension systems. The new suspension designs made their way from England to the US, and the result was well received. After all, who doesn’t appreciate a ride that doesn’t end with your body aching and the famed “iron butt”? Meanwhile, in the states, motorcycle racing popularity was increasing by the minute. Early racing was actually held on horse racing ovals or bicycle velodromes, but by 1909 construction of wooden tracks specifically designed for motorcycles began to appear. They called their tracks motordromes, and they were circuits of 1.25 miles constructed out of 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 lumber. They featured severely turned banks which allowed riders to reach speeds previously unseen in the motorcycle world. Crashes were frequent and horrific. Riders who went down faced being impaled by the wooden track, and they were often fatal. Despite the dangers of racing, people flocked to watch, and riders wanted to go faster. This need for speed resulted 46

in demands for more powerful, versatile, and comfortable machines…and there just happened to be some American companies ready to satisfy that need. While Indian and Harley Davidson continued to keep up with the times and improve their production models, there were two other companies whose focus was simple…SPEED. I’m pretty sure these guys followed the motto “if ya ain’t first, you’re last”…or maybe that was Ricky Bobby…but who the hell cares?? These people helped ensure that today you can pass everyone in the hammer lane, give ’em the old one finger salute for slowing you down, and wear a smile while doing it. The Waltham Manufacturing Company was actually founded in 1893, but it wasn’t until 1903 that they would commence production of the famous “Orient Racing Bicycles”. These bikes were first introduced to the world at the Charles River Race Track in Boston, at what would come to be known as the first recorded motorcycle speed event in the United States. The Orient set a tack time of 7 minutes over a 5 mile course. Not bad for a first run, but exhibiting the primal need to go faster, to push the limits if you will…they went on to develop an improved 4 HP, 1,000 cc V-Twin that powered the Marsh-Metz before the company’s motorcycle division went belly-up in 1908. The other, more familiar, US name in motorcycle racing was Excelsior Motor Company. Though the company operated overseas as well, the US division began operations in 1905. A Chicago based division; Excelsior’s first motorcycle was a 21 cubic inch, 344 cc 4stroke, single speed machine with a leather belt drive. It had a top speed of 35-40 mph. This first attempt would not suffice. Humor me, if you will, but at this point in my writing I am forced to take a small break and giggle at the scenario unfolding in my head…Four chimps in all their ginger glory, standing around this bike. The first is smiling at his brilliant creation,

awaiting praise from the others on a job well done. Chimps 2 and 3 pat him on the back and commence telling stories of the awesomeness that has just unfolded in front of them. But chimp 4 stands a bit apart…scratching his head (or whatever chimps scratch) and pondering. (Number 4 you see…he is the crazy one, the envelope pusher, the friend that always sees another option…that usually gets you all in trouble). The other 3 stop and stare at Number 4, and Number 1 of course has to ask what the problem is…Number 4 looks up, one eye making contact and the other trailing up and off to the left (as usual). He smiles as he raises his arms, lets out a loud abrupt conglomeration of excited grunts…and begins flexing his throttle hand. Squealing and grunting commences, and they all begin exercising those throttle hands. And so it begins….back to the drawing board. And so it was for Excelsior…there had to be a better way, a faster way. By 1910 they had introduced an engine configuration they would become famous for, and continue to produce until 1929…. the notable “X Series”. This engine was the V-Twin measuring 61 cubic inches (1,000 cc) and would become the first ever to hit the century mark. The “Model Big X” was the mainstay of Excelsior production, sporting an inlet-over-exhaust V-Twin, it was firstly belt driven, and later had 2 speed and 3 speed gearboxes. Production was limited in comparison to Indian and Harley, and

many of these models were exported to Europe and Australia. This era brought about the evolution of spring frames, magneto ignitions, kick starts, spring mounted seats, improved tires, and heavier/sturdier frames to accommodate the larger engines. The motorcycle had become its own entity, no longer a bicycle with an engine, but a separate machine with its own technology. In late 1913 and early 1914, at what was then its heyday, motorcycle production sudden-

Ohio Bike Week Celebrating 15 Years of Rockin’ the North Coast! Ohio Bike Week is undeniably the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event and is arguably one of the 6 largest motorcycle events in the nation. In just 15 short years, Ohio Bike Week has grown from a small town HOG Rally hosted by a defunct dealership into a weeklong celebration involving more than 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts across the state. Last year’s rally was their largest yet, and the folks in charge have doubled down for their 15th Anniversary in 2015! They've reclaimed the Fairground and added even more stages there - in addition to the Downtown Block Party and Mad River Party Zones! The Erie County Fairgrounds will host The Legendary Broken Spoke Saloon and entertainment includes Saving Abel, Bullet Boys, and Jasmine Cain. The addition of the Broken Spoke and Fairgrounds to the OBW entertainment lineup has done nothing to take away from anything else they’ve developed over the years. The big shows kick off in Toledo, once again, with another classic rock show delivered by Cinderella’s Tom Keifer on Friday, May 29th. Then Saturday the focus shifts to Sandusky for Puddle of Mudd. The World Famous Downtown Block Party has more fire than ever – with 3 national acts scheduled! Jesse James Dupree, the perennial voice of Bike Week, takes to the stage with Jackyl to kick things off on Thursday, June 4th. Then Colt Ford headlines the party Friday night. In an exciting addition, the Ohio Bike Week folks added Buckcherry as a headliner on Saturday night (June 6th) to close out the party. Traditional Block Party headliners The End and Earthquakers are also performing as well – that’s right, 3 legitimate HEADLINERS to close out the BIGGEST BIKER BASH this side of Sturgis! It’s important to note that as always, all of these Block Party performances are FREE!

54

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Countless other national and regional acts keep the week rocking across more than a dozen stages – including Rebel Son, Living Deads, and Ekoostik Hookah performing on the loft at The Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon. The Barrel House has taken on a life of its own beyond Bike Week as a popular ride destination throughout the summer. One of the best kept “secrets” of the rally is their expanded outdoor seating around the back of the Saloon. It’s a great place to sneak away for a few moments, drink in hand; and enjoy the lake view. Possibly the most exciting addition to Bike Week occurs a few hours to the south, as the Ohio Bike Week AMRA Spring Nationals take place at Kil-Kare Raceway (www. kilkare.com). The event features top motorcycle drag bikes from across the country competing for glory and points towards the national championship. The family friendly event features live music, vendors, a bike show, and even conveniently located between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus – the races allow a new southern kick-off to Ohio Bike Week. Thunder Roads Ohio is also proud to announce that we will once again team up with OBW to produce the Official Ohio Bike Week Bike Show. The International Master Bike Builders Association (IMBBA) will again be out to handle the judging – to ensure objective, professional evaluation of the bikes. The People’s Choice categories will also be expanded to recognize more fan favorites as well.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

It’s hard to imagine another venue or opportunity to see this kinda line-up without spending a dollar. This is just one reason why Ohio Bike Week is easily one of my favorite rallies anywhere – and it’s not just because I’m a homer or work with them. Quite the contrary, we enjoy working with Ohio Bike Week because of how they run their event! The folks at OBW have always taken the approach that they will throw a HUGE PARTY – and the crowds will take care of them by spending their own money as they see fit. Hopefully they will spend it supporting the event through food, beverages, and OBW Gear – but that’s up to those attending. The OBW masterminds believe that if they offer fair prices and a good product, people will buy. How cool is that?

Continuing with their constant desire to expand, Ohio Bike Week is also introducing an entirely new Old Skool Rod and Chopper Show presented by Renegade Magazine. The Show is being held Saturday, June 6th at The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campgrounds. Those exhibiting for either show are invited to bring their bikes or rat rods out to the fairgrounds in advance to display them in an indoor, secured display area. For more information, visit OhioBikeWeek.com or email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com. There are so many other things that we could discuss, including the Clydesdales, The Ohio Flags of Honor, the Scott Gast Memorial: Battle of the Bands, and of course the Thunder Roads / Ohio Bike Week Bikini Contest – to name just a few! With more than 50 pages, the following is packed full of performances, with over 50 bands, countless ride destinations, and so much to do and see. It is THE MIDWEST’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT with good reason!

OHIO BIKE WEEK AMRA SPRING NATIONALS

At KilKare Raceway, Presented by Buckminn’s D&D Harley-Davidson (Continued from p. 60) At the end of the season, the AMRA crowns a national champion; but the emphasis is on fan friendly events and local racers. The “OPEN STREET” class is for local riders that want to see what their bike will do or challenge their friends on the track. Grudge races are increasingly popular and allow enthusiasts to pit their bikes against other local racers. Beyond the races, those coming to KilKare for the weekend will find live music, vendors, a bike show, biker rodeo games, and so much more. There will even be Quarter Midget Racing as well over the weekend. These are ¼ size midget race cars that race around a tight oval track. It’s a weekend full of bikes, racing, and fun for the entire family. Gates open each day at 9am, with engines firing at 10pm. Daily tickets are $20 or weekend passes are $40. Ohio Bike Week VIP All-Access pass holders are able to attend the entire weekend with their passes. For more information or to purchase passes, visit www.OhioBikeWeek.com

The Bike Week Pool Party! BIGGER AND BETTER, than ever before! Once again, Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) has teamed up with Ohio Bike Week to host the Official Ohio Bike Week Bikini & Calendar Girl Contest! This year we’ve invited our friends over at American Heritage Motorcycles to join the party and they’ve helped us kick up the prizes to a whole new level. This year we will be awarding over $2,500 in cash and prizes – including over $500 in cash to the finalists. Additional prizes include Bike Week Prize packages, professional photo shoots, and of course swag from the sponsors! There are also prize opportunities for those in attendance this year. TRO will be hosting several contests and games on the deck, and the event will also be a Buckeye Thunder Run Stop. Special Bike Week prizes will be awarded to those checking in with their Thunder Run Cards at the party. Jesse James Dupree, from Jackyl and the Full Throttle TV Show, will again be a special Guest Judge for the contest. Jesse brings the riders from his Annual Cancer Ride to join the party each year, and it all

kicks up to a whole new level with their arrival! The Bikini Party is a Bike Week tradition that has slowly built into one of the most popular events of the week, with it standing-room-only 2 hours before the actual contest the last several years. The Comfort Inn has expanded the pool bar area each of the last few years to accommodate the contest crowds – and this year’s expansion includes an outside stage area to free up the valuable deck space and allow better viewing of the contestants! The rock band Latter, from Dayton, will be providing musical entertainment for the day. They recently have performed at several TRO events and have rocked’ the house each time! The Comfort Inn Cabana Bar is one of the best party spots for rally attendees throughout the week. The bar and pool area are open to the public throughout OBW, and it’s always a party! The

friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere make it the perfect place to relax before heading downtown or after a ride. If you’re interested in being a contestant, email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for more information. Advance registration is encouraged as spots are limited. Some spots and Ohio Bike Week Passes will be awarded to winners of various Pre-Rally Parties hosted around the state by Thunder Roads Ohio. Picking a New Truck

WITH MIKE WEBER

If you are in motorsports of any type odds are you have a truck to either carry your bike or pull your trailer. A good portion of recreational riders have trucks and trailers to transport their bikes when necessary. With our mix of street and race bikes and assortment of race cars, good trucks are a necessity at Weber Motorsports. Unfortunately, all trucks have a shelf life and eventually have to be replaced. Recently, my trusty 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 turned 199,000 miles. It is still a great truck in excellent shape. Just two months ago it had pulled our 38 foot trailer over 1,000 miles to go racing in Florida. However, in the back of my mind it was obvious the time to upgrade was coming. Further, Weber Motorsports had bought a 48 foot trailer so we could run both the sprint and the modified when we go racing. Despite 300 HP and 500 ft lbs of torque I knew the Chevy would struggle with the massive new trailer. Just for fun I started reading about the 2015 one ton offerings from the big three manufacturers. Dodge has the 3500 Ram, Chevy has the 3500 Silverado and Ford has the F350 Supersport. When I saw the nearly 400 horsepower outputs along with torque ratings over 850 ft lbs I was mesmerized. I couldn't stop reading about these beasts that can be bought by just anyone who walks in off the street. If the specs continue to increase people will be needing a CDL to drive these things. Ultimately, my fate was determined by a snow storm. It blew in on a weekday about noon. Soon it was snowing hard which caused the office staff to leave and rather quickly at that. I packed up and followed suit to avoid a rush hour nightmare. It was still early and I had cleared downtown when I saw the Dodge truck dealership conveniently on my way home. I thought let's stop in and see what they have. There is no harm in just looking. Big mistake. I sat down with Darvin Shulz from commercial truck sales and we narrowed down what would be my ideal truck. It was clear from my reading I needed to go with a full one ton (3500) series. Further, as I needed the maximum power and towing available from whichever manufacturer I chose, it had to come with a diesel power plant. I also wanted the sturdiest frames and biggest brakes available. This ruled out the half ton (1500) and three quarter ton lines (2500). THUNDER ROADSÂŽ OHIO MAGAZINE

We also analyzed several criteria which were important to me. My passenger car is a Nissan 370Z which is rear wheel drive and does not see snow. Thus, the truck has to be available as a daily driver and function in downtown Cincinnati. This ruled out a Dually and also an 8 foot bed. I have always been fanatical about the appearance of my vehicles. Both my car and my Silverado have been garage kept, washed weekly and waxed biannually. Hand washing a big pickup is a large job which I don't want to do on a regular basis. I needed the truck to go thru the Mike's car wash near my house. They have done a great job with all my vehicles for the last 20 years so any truck I bought had to fit. Also as I have a 20 foot garage (pretty standard size) I wanted the truck to be garage kept. I must admit that remodeling the garage and the dining room so I could fit the truck was not out of the question. We didn't know the answerers to those questions at the time, but Darvin suggested he may have just the truck I was looking for. He went and brought around a Ram 3500 Laramie Mega Cab. Although it took a while to scale the height to enter the cab once I was in I was blown away by the interior. The trim level had all the bells and whistles normally associated with high end luxury sedans. There were heated and cooled power leather seats. There was an 8.4 inch infotainment system on the dash. You name it and these trucks can have it. Darvin suggested we take it for a spin. Even with the storm who was I to argue. The first thing one notices is the suspension. Due to an initial suspension that is car like the leaf springs effect and the inherent bangs and booms over potholes have gone away. The second thing one notices is the power . This truck made nearly 400 HP and 865 ft lbs of torque. Even in the snow and slush you could feel it all coiled up waiting for the opportunity to unleash on the road. I asked Darvin if he thought this might fit in my garage. Since we were only ten minutes from the house he suggested we try it. Big mistake number two. As we pulled it into my garage this model was 9 inches too long. However, Dodge offers a crew cab that is 11 inches shorter which should make it into the garage with 2 inches to spare. How cool is that.

Dodge Ram 3500 Laramie Cummins High Output 6.7L Turbo Diesel With Aisin Transmission, 385 HP, 865 Ft Lbs of Torque Ford F350 Super Duty 6.7L V8 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel, 440 HP, 860 Ft Lbs of Torque Chevy Silverado HD 3500 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel, 397 HP, 765 Ft Lbs of Torque I highly recommend this. Driving each of these beasts was awesome. There is not a bad truck in the bunch. It really comes down to personal preference and what one plans for the truck. I went with the Dodge Laramie with the high output Turbo Diesel package. Why? There were a couple reasons. The Dodge was equal to or the most powerful truck in the group. Chevy's 3500 was a step behind at 765 ft lbs of torque. Dodge's interior was simply outstanding. Chevys was very nice and Fords was ok, but had more plastic than any of them. The frame, brakes and tow specs on the Dodge were just what I was looking for. Finally, Ford does not make a Super Duty that is less than 20 feet so it would not fit in the garage without a major remodel. My sales guy at Wyler Ram / Dodge on I471 made the buying process pleasant and fun. Every time I changed my definition of the perfect truck he would find exactly what I was looking for. When I finally pulled the trigger the truck quickly arrived at the dealership. We added spray on bed liner (from LineX), clearance lights, step up rails and the factory Fifth Wheel tow package. Done Deal. As of writing this article I have had the truck for 6 days. All I can say is wow, what a beast. Getting Your Bike Custom Painted The Basics

So you’re considering having your bike painted. It can be a huge decision with many factors to consider including style, quality, schedule, price, a painter and more. It can truthfully be a daunting task. Try not to become dismayed or discouraged because it will be worthwhile, provided that you weigh out all the considerations and make the proper decisions.

YOUR VISION: The number one factor to consider when approaching painting your bike is your overall vision for your bike or project. This vision comes more easily to some people than to others but it is a critical first step. One of the main reasons that we love motorcycles is the individualistic aspect of them so making it our own is important. We all want our bike to stand out in a crowd and look different than the other guys at Bike Night or at a local ride. There are so many potential colors or color combinations. Styles range from solids and stripes to flames and scallops to artwork and retro… and everything in between! Some good strategies to begin your search for such a vision include the internet, local Bike Night events, and local bike shows. Consider all your options and try to narrow it to a short list of colors and designs that you can discuss with your painter.

PAINT QUALITY: Quality and price tend to go hand-in-hand. If your budget for a chopper tank and fender is $400, do not expect your job to be a David Mann masterpiece. That is not fair to your painter or to yourself. You really do get what you pay for. If your budget is $1200 for a chopper tank and fender then it better meet or exceed your expectations. Quality has many aspects. Surfaces must be either well-sanded or sandblasted. The very best surface to begin painting is sandblasted and wiped clean… body-filler and primer will adhere to such a surface much better. Attaining a smooth finish with bodywork and primer 116

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

is the foundation for any paint job. Crisp designs, graphics, pin striping and airbrush work are all very important. The final clear coat finish becomes the final face of your paint… the shine should be very clear and not cloudy or orange-peeled.

CHOOSING MATERIALS: The other aspect of quality is the materials. Lesser quality materials can look great but may not last over time as well as quality materials. Plastic body-fillers can range widely in quality and cost. The better materials will retain a certain level of flexibility and not become brittle and crack. Most high-quality custom-painters use epoxy primer, meaning it is catalyzed and cures based upon a chemical reaction and not simply the evaporation of solvents. Epoxy primers are harder, more resilient and have better adhesion to the surface. Although it sounds cliché, you get what you pay for when selecting a brand of paint and clear coat. For OEM, color-matched and some custom work, look for brands such as DuPont, PPG and BASF/R-M. For pure custom work, House of Kolor has been the standard for well over a half-century.

PLANNING A SCHEDULE: Schedule can also be a consideration. Do not expect your painter to turn around your bike’s new paint in a time frame like the guys on Discovery Channel. That is television and you are dealing with real-life. But nothing is more frustrating than your parts remaining with your painter for endless months without progress or communication. Schedule depends somewhat upon the time of year. Do not contact your painter in January wanting your bike custom-painted in time for Daytona. The busiest time for most painters is typically November to May because Northern bikers are all in off-season from riding. Not many Northern riders want their bikes painted in the middle of the summer so painters are less busy during those months. The relative complexity of a job also impacts the schedule. A tiny chopper tank and skinny fender painted solid black takes less THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Getting Your Bike Custom Painted The Basics (Continued)

time to paint than the same pieces painted retro-70’s style with striping, graphic panels and candy colors. A touring bike with hot-rod flames takes more time, and a ten-piece bagger with airbrushed skulls and intricate graphics takes even more.

AND FINALLY….PRICE! Price is impacted by all these factors. Sandblasting costs more than just sanding off the old paint. Quality body-filler, epoxy primer, brand-name paint, intricate designs, additional coats of clear coat, and fully wet-sanded and buffed finishes all increase the price and overall look of your paint and your bike. But not every paint job needs to be designed and priced for a Sultan. If you have a reduced budget, still insist on high-quality materials but go with a solid-color or two-tone, finished with full wet-sanding and buffing. Nobody can say that a bike painted solid-black with clear coat like glass does not look like dynamite!

CHOOSING YOUR PAINTER: Now you have weighed all these factors and need to look for a painter with sufficient skill to turn your vision into reality in steel and paint. Painters come in all shapes and sizes… full-time and parttime, big-shop and one-man-gang, local and internet-accessed from anywhere, communicative and not. Ultimately, it is the client’s responsibility to find a painter whom is the best fit. When selecting a painter, use a similar approach to selecting your “vision”. Search on-line using tools such Google, Instagram, Facebook and Craigslist. Locate internet web-sites that cater to the types of bikes that you own… such as Chop Cult and Jockey Journal for choppers. Ask guys you know or friends of friends, who have recently had a bike painted. Ask the guy at your local indy bike shop. Once you have some names of individual painters or shops, do some research about them either on-line or in-person. You are looking for a painter with whom

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

you are comfortable and shares your views regarding the vision, quality, schedule and price for your bike.

QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK: When you make an initial contact with a potential painter, be sure to inform the painter of the following aspects of your project: (1) manufacturer and model of your bike, (2) which piece(s) of then bike are to be painted, (3) general description or pictures of your “vision”, (4) current condition of the finish on your pieces, (5) whether any/much bodywork is required, and (6) schedule expectations. Only once these issues have been addressed should you even begin to request a price. After sending the painter information about the various aspects of your project, here is a checklist of items to ask any prospective painter for your bike: 1. Ask to see some examples of his work either on a web-site, a blog, via pictures sent or in-person 2. Ask what types or brands of materials that he will utilize. 3. Ask what sort of final finish he plans to attain… wet-sanded dead-flat and buffed for a mirror-like finish, or simply final clear coat. 4. Ask his approximate turnaround time. 5. Ask for a price estimate which may include some options or adders. Just like any career, painters with the better creative or artistic skills, the more repeatable artisan skills, the better communications with clients, and the best work ethic tend to rise to the top and receive various accolades such as their work featured in magazines or winning awards at bike shows. But keep in mind there are excellent paints… artists and artisans alike… available in many locations.

WARNING SIGNS: There are a few warnings signs to watch for with painters: 1. Asking for a large down payment before beginning a project. 2. Rationalizing a high price due to the high costs of materials. Barring the use of extraordinarily expensive paints, a chopper tank and fender should be painted using around $100 of materials. A full-bore ten-piece bagger should be painted using $400 of materials. 3. Not communicating throughout the planning and execution of the project, either via phone, email or text. I really hope this guide to getting your bike painted is helpful and informative for you. Just keep in mind that although this process may seem daunting and stressful, if you break it down into smaller steps it becomes much more manageable. eet Scooter “Trash” Sandoval, a 6 year old Chihuahua who grew up with ambitions of joining the military and being a service dog. As he grew, Scooter realized because of his smaller stature, not his determination, he would not be able to join the military and fulfill his life’s dreams. SO, Scooter thought to himself, how can I give something to our men and women who do serve to protect our country? Lot’s of ideas came and went then, one stuck with little Scooter. Let’s help the children of fallen soldiers get an education they may not otherwise get. Scooter immediately began telling his ideas to his best friend and human companion Adam Sandoval. Adam contacted the American Legion post in his hometown of Fort Meyers Florida to see what kinds of services they offered. The American Legion has a Scholarship program for kids. Well, Adam thought about Scooters idea and together the American Legion, Adam and Scooter formed a Scholarship for children of parents that died in combat. In order to fulfill the idea, Scooter and Adam formed a “Charitable” plan of riding Adam’s 1996 Harley Davidson Classic around the country to every Harley Davidson Dealership to raise awareness of their plan and get donations to make it a reality. On November 10th 2014 “ScootinAmerica” was formed and Scooter and HIS road dog and chauffer, Adam set off in chase of their dream. ScootinAmerica will take Scooter and Adam across the lower 48 states 6 times and will go to every Harley Davidson dealership all 696 of them. ScootinAmerica will also be aiming to break 3 world records. One, the most miles ridden in a year (65,000), Two, longest charity ride (one year and 65,000 miles) and Three, the largest group ride (taking place in Florida in November 2015). ScootinAmerica donates 100% of every donation

to the American Legion Legacy Vet’s Scholarship for children of parents that died in combat. Scooter and Adam do not use any of the donation money for any part of the ride. Adam finds places to sleep, for him and Scooter, sometimes hotels, mostly camping along his motorcycle or sometimes by the pure hospitality of complete strangers willing to give him and Scooter a warm and comfortable room for the night as did Rob “Redneck” President of EMS Angels MC, Cali when Scooter and Adam went to Guidera’s Harley Davidson in Yuba City. Rob’s offer of a warm room and comfortable bed could not have come at a better time either, it was discovered that Scooter’s heated blanket in his “road house” had broken and was not warming up. SO, a quick trip to a local super center retail store got Scooter a new heating pad and blanket. Just enough to get Scooter and Adam down the road to the next Harley-Davidson dealership. If you happen to see Scooter and Adam coming to a location near you and don’t mind the company of a very nice and down to earth type of Chihuahua and his road dog Adam, offer up a room or couch, doubt you would regret it. If you would like to learn more and follow Scooter and Adam’s journey, go to www.ScootinAmerica.com there you can see where Scooter and Adam’s next stops will be and maybe you can make it to one near you and say HEY. If you have a Facebook account, look up ScootinAmerica (TV Season) and like the page. Every “like” on the page get 2 cents donated to Scholarship as well. Article and photos contributed by Rob “Redneck” Chaney. It was a California Dreamin’ adventure and you couldn’t ask for better t-shirt weather in February with temps in the 60’s, but Mother Nature made a visit with a 3-day soaker while riding through Northern California. With 9 more months to go Scooter and Adam have been on the road for 3 months, logged 11,000 miles and have raised over $27,000 thus far…Nice work!

DON'T BE A WEED A friend of mine posted a social media status update today, and it got me thinking. She posted, “Flowering trees started blooming, Forsythia has started to bloom, Crocus are in full bloom, the Iris have started peeping out of the ground, not saying there will be no more flurries, but I think we finally made it to Spring”.. You know what else will start making their appearance? Dandelions, crabgrass.. And Pop up wannabe Motorcycle Clubs. It seems an inherent side effect of Spring riding season. Boys that have either failed in another club, or watched the series finale of SOA and already miss it, will start sewing on internet patches that say things like “These are my church clothes” all over their vests and start showing up at Bike Nights. There’s a saying I hear often, and I have used as well. “The man makes the patch, the patch don’t make the man”. Typically this is in reference to “that guy” who just patched into a club for his first time and immediately thinks he knows more than did a week prior while still in a Probate Vest. We call it “NPS”, New Patch Syndrome. But do you know there’s another saying that’s equally important? “It takes a patch to be in a club, but you don’t need a patch to be a man”. I know many, many bikers. More often than not, most of them don’t belong in a truly structured MC. Oh sure there are so many variations of what a “Club” is in this day and age, but I’m discussing actual MC’s. MC’s that have structured requirements like weekly or monthly church, mandatory rides throughout the 124

year with self-imposed retributions for not contributing to at least the mandated bare minimums. You all understand that this entire thing, the MC lifestyle, it’s a choice, not a requirement. I mean you can be a Biker by choice too. You can own a motorcycle, go on poker runs, or go to bike nights, wear chaps and a leather jacket, and absolutely be considered a “Biker”. But until you witness one of your members in your club hand over $50 or $100 in fines for missing something mandatory to the membership, or throw out half of what’s in his pocket to help a Brother get his bike back on the road, or add to the collection plate to bury a brother, then you don’t know what the MC lifestyle is actually about. Have you ever witnessed a club Brother put a Probate vest back on after having earned his full set, perhaps as long as 20+ years ago because maybe he stepped out of line or didn’t follow

Do you understand why, and would you be willing to do the same without hesitation? To show your membership that you are no better than the weakest member of your outfit, no matter how long you’ve been there? If not, you have no business in club life. He does it out of Respect for his patch, respect for his club, and Love of his brotherhood. And do you understand that he does all of this willingly and voluntarily? Additionally, Ohio will begin issuing CHL’s to non-residents who work in Ohio. This is critical for school employees, because the exemption for possessing firearms in school zones (including within 1,000 feet from the perimeter) only applies to licenses issued from the state in which the school is located. Reciprocity agreements are useless. Another change is that Ohio CHL’s will remain valid when residents move out of state. This will allow people time to establish residency in other states and obtain a CHL from their new states while legally carrying on the valid Ohio license. Once becoming a non-resident, people will not be permitted to renew their Ohio CHL unless they continue to work in Ohio.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Some states, such as Georgia, automatically accept another state’s license, as long as the other state accepts their license. Ohio will automatically accept Georgia licenses beginning March 23, 2015 and so Georgia should automatically accept Ohio licenses on the same day, thought it may take some time for word to be disseminated to prosecutors and law enforcement. Many other states require a signed agreement. Ohio will be a hybrid. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office is already reviewing reciprocity and will be contacting states where applicable. The new law will bring additional privileges to Ohio residents, as more states will honor your Ohio CHL, but some will take more time than others. As always, we encourage gun owners to consult the Attorney General web site and the authority in other states to or through which you may be traveling. Gun owners must comply with the laws of the state they are living or visiting. As always, it is the responsibility of each individual to know, understand and follow all applicable laws relating to the ownership, transportation, and use of firearms. Jim Irvine is the Buckeye Firearms Association Chairman, BFA PAC Chairman and recipient of the NRA-ILA’s 2011 “Jay M. Littlefield Volunteer of the Year Award” and the CCRKBA’s 2012 “Gun Rights Defender of the Year Award.”

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... More beer

Biker's Dog A highly timid little man, ventured into a biker bar in the Bronx and clearing his throat asked, "Um, err, which of you gentlemen owns the Doberman tied outside to the parking meter?" A giant of a man, wearing biker leathers, his body hair growing out through the seams, turned slowly on his stool, looked down at the quivering little man and said, "It's my dog. Why?" "Well," squeaked the little man, obviously very nervous, "I believe my dog just killed it, sir." "What?" roared the big man in disbelief. "What in the hell kind of dog do you have?" "Sir," answered the little man, "it's a little four week old female puppy." "Bull!" roared the biker, "how could your puppy kill my Doberman?" "It appears that your dog choked on her, sir." A Push Please A man is in bed with his wife when there is a knock at the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it's 3:30 in the morning. "I'm not getting out of bed at this time," he thinks, and rolls over.

Then a louder knock follows. "Aren't you going to answer that?" says his wife. So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing on the porch. It didn't take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk. "Hi there," slurs the stranger. "Can you give me a push??" "No, get lost! It's half past three. I was in bed," says the man and he slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says, "That wasn't very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the babysitter and you had to knock on that man's house to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost?" "But the guy was drunk," says the husband. "It doesn't matter," says the wife. "He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him." So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the front door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, "Hey, do you still want a push?" And he hears a voice cry out, "Yeah, please." So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, "Where are you?" And the drunk replies, "Over here, on the swing."

A man came home from an exhausting day at work, plopped down on the couch in front of the television, and told his wife: "Get me a beer before it starts!" The wife sighed and got him a beer. Ten minutes later, he said: "Get me another beer before it starts!" She looked cross, but fetched another beer and slammed it down next to him. He finished that beer and a few minutes later said: "Quick, get me another beer, it's going to start any minute!" The wife was furious. "Is that all you're going to do tonight! Drink beer and sit in front of that TV! You're nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob and furthermore..." The man sighed and said: "It's started." Wake up call A man and his wife were having some problems and were giving each other the silent treatment. The next week, the man realized that he'd need his wife to wake him at 5 a.m. for an early flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence, he finally wrote on a piece of paper: "Please wake me at 5 a.m." The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9 a.m. and he'd missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and scream at his wife when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed that said: "It's 5 a.m. Wake up.
