FROM THE PUBLISHER When we were kids there was a regular ritual we went through each Fall. At the end of summer, we would all return to school and catch up with folks we hadn’t seen since classes ended months earlier. Along with the regular greetings there was the exchange of stories over what we’d done over the summer. Sometimes these would even make it into classroom assignments – “What I did over my Summer Vacation.” I’m drawing a few comparisons to that routine as I consider this month’s events and our vigorous summer schedule. First off, I’m looking forward to seeing riders that I haven’t seen since last summer. We saw a lot of folks over the winter, at the various shows – but that’s certainly not the same as sharing a beer in the Hog Pen (Villa, Dayton) or riding with friends in Sandusky during Ohio Bike Week. As the bike nights and rides kick off all across the state, I’m looking forward to catching some wind and seeing everyone out on the road. I’m also left considering how I’m going to spend this upcoming riding season. What will we do this “summer vacation”? Being a biker or rider means far more than simply owning a motorcycle. Being a member of the motorcycle community involves being a part of rides, rallies, and getting out on that motorcycle. If you’re simply riding down to the local Starbucks or work each day, you’re missing out. As much as I love my bike(s), it’s the people and events that really make it all work. Getting out and covering the miles can often be a solitary thing. Most of my wind therapy is done alone however, the really cool thing about our community is that I can ride hours in any direction and find brothers and sisters that I’ve never met before. When I ride down to June Jam, out to Ohio Bike Week, or simply out to CrossRoads in Southington – I’m going to get off my bike and find folks that I have a common bond with. We are all brothers and sisters of the wind, kindred spirits. We know the secret and are a little wiser for it. That secret is that we can escape some of the routine and stress of our lives on two wheels. It’s how I cope with stress and the challenges I face. It’s my drug of choice. Our addiction to the open road creates a bond and a better outlook on life in my opinion. There are many people that go through life never connecting in a manner that we can in mere moments at a rally or at our local biker bar. I think that understanding is part of the reason bikers and our riding community is so charitable. We understand that we are all in this together. We are more likely to help others because it’s part of our nature – we’ve discovered that brotherhood has nothing to do with blood. It’s something far deeper. Our magazine is your guide to our riding community. We cover recommended events and ride stops all across the Midwest. We cover technical aspects and recommended upkeep for our iron steeds – hoping to help keep everyone on the road. We compile features on custom rides and share coverage on the new ones. We also make it a point to share new opportunities for folks to get out and discover new aspects of our sport – such as hill climb races, flat tracks races, and hare scrambles. It’s all in Thunder Roads! I’d encourage you to make the most of this year’s “summer vacation”. Get out and join us at a rally you’ve never been to before or check out one of our new Thunder Run Stops. My personal goal is to take part in a few organized dual sport rides this year, something I’ve never done before. Have a knobby tired bike? You’re welcome to join me! I’m planning on taking Cole to the Lima ½ Mile Flat Track Races and the AMA Vintage Days races – perfect events for a 3 year old motorcycle enthusiast! If you’ve never been to a flat track race or seen a sidecar race – I can’t even begin to describe them. You just have to experience them for yourself. And if you do – I can guarantee that you’ll have some great stories to share at the end of the summer! As always, I appreciate your support – and hope to see you out on the road!

TRO BIKE SHOWS!
UPCOMING BIKE SHOWS
Since our launch, Thunder Roads Ohio has been involved in a number of Bike Shows across the state. In some cases we helped support existing shows and in other situations we hosted the shows ourselves. Over the last several years, we’ve also partnered with the International Master Bike Builders Association to bring an entirely new level of professionally judged shows to the Midwest. These shows allowed both professional builders and garage wrenchers to have their work objectively scored allowing a truly technical competition based upon the form, fit, function, and safety of their rides. Each year, we’ve sought to up our productions and attract better and better bikes. These efforts culminated in us hosting the 2015 IMBBA National Championship this past March – with one of our own Ohio builders (Cole Rogers) scoring the highest of any custom bike judged anywhere this past year and winning the Championship Ring. In 2016, we will continue the development of our TRO Bike Show series with a number of established Bike Shows throughout the region. Some of these shows will be professionally judged by the IMBBA – including an entirely new Champion Calibre Show being hosted by Thunder Roads Ohio and PA in Erie this summer. All of these shows will be professionally presented and allow builders to truly showcase their work. Just a few shows that you might want to consider include: Ohio Bike Week - IMBBA SHOW, Sandusky OH – June 4th, 2016 Napoleon Harley-Davidson, Napoleon OH - June 11 June Jam, Hocking Hills OH – June 18th Erie BikeFest (Harley-Davidson of Erie) IMBBA SHOW – July 16th Blackburns Trikes, Medina OH – July 23rd Sportsterz Thunder Zone, Geneva-on-the-Lake – September 11th

The American Motorcyclist Association and Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine have teamed up to offer joint seminars aimed at helping those looking to organize and host motorcycle events. Focusing on the fundamentals, presenters will cover basic areas such as organizing volunteers and marketing of events and then hit topics that may be a bit scarier such as liability and insurance. Participants may be surprised how easy it is to cover such critical aspects of hosting an event. “These seminars are a great opportunity for local organizers to get advice on how to get sanctioned and possibly even insured through the AMA,” commented Rob Baughman, AMA Road Riding Coordinator. A introductory seminar was held the week of February 20th in Columbus coinciding with the Easyriders® Invitational Bike Show that weekend. The seminar went well and organizers immediately began discussion on future opportunities to host such workshops. If you or members of your organization would
like more information on attending these upcoming classes, please email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and include a little about yourself and your organization. TENTATIVE WORKSHOPS ARE BEING SCHEDULED OVER OHIO BIKE WEEK AND ADDITIONAL TOPICS ARE BEING CONSIDERED FOR REGIONAL SERMINARS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS THE STATE. If you are interested in taking part or contributing to other workshops, please let us know.

HARLEYS (And ALL OF US) AGAINST HEROIN Sunday, May 14th Harley’s Against Heroin Car & Bike Show American Heritage Motorcycles, Loveland OH
MAY IS MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH
There is a tragic epidemic that is ravaging our local communities – which we all need to not only recognize but do something about - and that would be Heroin Addiction. While just preparing for this very magazine, I discovered that a young gentleman that I had photographed a little more than a year ago had died shortly afterwards from a heroin overdose – while he was home alone with his young son. Earlier this year, while attending a show in Cincinnati – I heard the story of a young couple that had both overdosed on heroin in the very hospital room where their child had just survived an incredibly risky surgery that appears to have changed their daughter’s life. As an almost daily trend, more and more stories surface about the lives being destroyed by this plight. It’s reached the point where we ALL need to step up and either do something ourselves or support the efforts of those that are. Thunder Roads Ohio - and in particular, Doug and Cheryl our Cincinatti Area Managers, have committed to helping to support Harleys Against Heroin. This is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is committed to raising funds in an effort to assist recovery facilities in the treatment and care of individuals seeking help for their addictions. It is based in the southern Tri-State, Greater Cincinnati area and has recently dedicated their efforts in 2016 to helping to support The Gateway House for Men, Safe Harbor of Hope for Women, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital – all ogranizations on the front line of the war against Heroin. Harleys Against Heroin will be hosting a Car and Bike Show on Sunday, May 14th at American Heritage Motorcycles of Cincinnati, in Loveland. Thunder Roads Ohio will be on-hand to help support the event and we encourage everyone to come out for the worthwhile cause. You can find out more information on their website – www.harleysagainstheroin.com. On page 37 of this issue, our own Tonya Sue writes about the upcoming ReCreation Weekend – which benefits Creation House, a residential facility in Northeast Ohio for those struggling with heroin addiction.

REPORT RACING, RACING, AND MORE RACING (And so much more!) AT AMA VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE DAYS
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Racers and fans of old motorcycles will have three days of actionpacked racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, July 8-10, during the American Motorcyclist Association’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days The event will feature vintage and post-vintage competition in hare scrambles, motocross, dirttrack, trials and road racing. “In many ways, vintage competition represents the best of the sport,” said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. “It’s all about fun, low-pressure racing, having good times and making memories on old motorcycles. It doesn’t get any better than that and you’d be hard pressed to find as much vintage racing, in as many classes and disciplines, as what we have at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.” The motocross, trials, hare scrambles and vintage road racing events are part of the AMA Vintage Grand Championship, which crowns national champions in these disciplines, while the half-mile dirt track, at nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds, offers one round of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. An exciting new addition this year is mini road racing in the upper paddock. Operated by the AMA-chartered Ohio Mini Roadracing League, the program includes practice on Friday and
10
two full days of racing on Saturday and Sunday. While the mini road racing is not part of the national championship program, the top riders in each class will be recognized based on the cumulative points earned during both days of competition. “Club members love going to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days every year. The bikes, people and atmosphere are like nothing else,” said OMRL President Kent Klawon. “In addition to those of us who already compete on full-sized bikes on the main road course, we’re thrilled to bring mini road racing to the upper paddock. Hopefully, we can encourage some new riders to join our ranks -- all while helping to raise funds for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.” Pre-entry for the motocross, trials, hare scrambles, dirt track and vintage road racing will be available later in April at www. americanmotorcyclist.com. Pre-registration for the OMRL program on the upper paddock will be available soon at www. ohiominiroadracingleague.com. Riders are asked to pre-register online and complete their signup at the track. Detailed class descriptions and a mini road racing FAQ are provided on the OMRL website.
A fundraiser for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days features classic motorcycles of all makes and styles, and honors the riders who made them famous. In addition to the racing program, the event features North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet with parts, bikes and memorabilia from all eras. The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show will feature examples of some of history’s most beloved motorcycles. Stunt shows and demo rides of current production bikes will keep attendees entertained, while seminars on numerous topics by noted motorcycling experts will keep them informed. AMA members who buy tickets directly from the AMA before June 6 receive an exclusive price discount. AMA members can call (800) 262-5646 to purchase a weekend pass for $45, a $5 savings off the regular advance rate, and a one-day pass for $25 for Friday or Saturday and $20 for Sunday, a $5 savings off the regular advance rate. There is no service charge for AMA members when purchasing through the AMA. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is a familyfriendly event. Children 12 and under are admitted free with paying, supervising adults.
More details about AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 8-10, will be announced soon. Keep an eye on www.amavintagemotorcycledays. com andwww.facebook.com/ AMAVintageMotorcycleDays/.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, It is snowing out and I’m writing my May article. That would not mean much to most people but this is Motorcycle Awareness month and we need the sun and warm weather. I’m writing in the future and I will say “The Awareness Ride and After Rally Party was held on a sunny and warm day.” HOPE I WAS RIGHT! With that being said let’s get down to business. In 2015 on this date we had 147 crashes and 4 fatalities and now in 2016 we have had 166 crashes and 6 fatalities. We have had a very mild winter and it’s looking like spring is going to be the same. We need to keep up the hard work telling all our brothers and sisters to ride safe. Now is the time to get that Look Twice Save a Life sign out & get it back in the front yard. If you don’t have one, call the state office 800-25 BIKER and have one shipped to you. I would like to thank everyone that came out to the Seminar. The speakers all did a great job and we all got some good information. I would like to thank Chuck Stiteler, Motorcycle Ohio State Program Coordinator and Sherry Hill, Region 8 Safety and Education Coordinator and a Motorcycle Ohio Instructor for bringing us up to date on the MO program and what it takes to become an Instructor. Thank You Every year we get our bikes out and somewhere along the way I say “have you checked your tires?” I’m a little late this year but I want you to take a look at it one more time and check that tire pressure. Also do a good check over for any oil leaks, fuel leaks or smell. Make sure all the lights work, check for soft brake pedal or lever and make sure everything is tight. Look at the bolts and see if there are any shiny spots (meaning it is loose) and then take it for a slow ride and listen for noises. Now you are ready to do a rider tune up. Go to an empty parking lot and do some figure eights, some hard stops, left and right slow turns and slow ride (get ready for the bike games). And last of all check your riding gear to make sure your stuff still fits (not saying) and it’s in good condition. Now let’s hit the road. Something that has been going around is that the international sign of a biker in distress is a helmet behind a bike on the ground. Every bike sitting along the side of the road should be checked on. At least slow down and gets a thumbs up, and if no thumbs up, stop and check on them. There is never a good reason to stop on the side of the road. You should get to a safe place to stop and take a break; gas station, ice cream stands or rest area. If you are riding in a group and a bike breaks down, only one or two bikes should stop. The rest should move on to a safe place. We always put out information on how we need to stay safe. We put out magnets saying “ look out for motorcycles” and signs along the road that say “Look Twice Save a Life”, but something else that would help to is if we could get all drivers to turn on their lights when it’s raining out and move over when an emergency vehicle is along the side of the road. If we tell our friend and they tell their friend, the word would get out and all would be safer. The next big event for me is June Jam 2016. It is coming together and all we need now is you to come to Logan Ohio and have a great time. Keep checking the web for up to date information and we will see you there. I know we could use some more vendors so if you are out and about, tell them to call. I’m still working on that question that so far has NO answer; how we can stop distracted driving. If you have an idea let me know. We will keep looking and we will keep telling everyone that the life you save may be one of us. “Don’t text and drive” Ride within your limits Mike Stock Safety and Education Director 419-654-5446 Mikestock419@gmail.com 12

hrough a special partnership between CMA and Hope for the Heart, resources have been put together providing Biblical keys on the top issues we believe bikers face and it is called “Life’s Ride Plan”. Each Life’s Ride Plan provides Scriptural answers on different topics of concern and each topic discussion includes a reference card and a DVD to help readers walk through the scriptures concerning each topic. For the next two months I would like to discuss one titled, “Scriptural Answers on Forgiveness”. The High Cost of Unforgiveness: Unforgiveness robs us of God’s forgiveness (Mark 11:25) Unforgiveness allows a root of bitterness to grow (Hebrews 12:15) Unforgiveness causes us to walk in darkness (1 John 2:9-11) Unforgiveness reflects a godless heart (Job 36:13) Unforgiveness makes us captive to sin (Acts 8:23) Unforgiveness grieves the Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:3032). God’s Heart on Forgiveness: God commands that we forgive each other (Ephesians 4: 32) God wants us to forgive others because He forgives us (Colossians 3:13) God wants us to see unforgiveness as sin (James 4:17) God wants us to get rid of unforgiveness before it makes us bitter (Hebrews 12:15) God wants us to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21) God wants us to be free to worship Him in honesty and in truth (Matthew 5:23-24) Four Stages of Forgiveness: 1. Face the Offense. Don’t minimize the offense. Don’t excuse offensive behavior. 2 Corinthians 1:9, NIV. 2. Feel the Offense. Don’t deny your pain. Don’t carry false guilt for hating what happened. (God hates sin, you too can hate sin.) Ecclesiastes 3:1, 8, NIV. 3. Forgive the Offender. Colossians 3:13, NIV. 4. Find Oneness – if appropriate. Note if the offender accepts responsibility. Discern if there is absolute truthfulness – If not, reconciliation is not possible. Set appropriate boundaries. Don’t rush reconciliation – change takes time. Philippians 2:1-2, NIV. How Do You Truly Forgive? How to handle “The Hook” Imagine right now that there is a hook attached to your collarbone. And imagine all the pain attached to the hook as a result of the wrong that was done to you. Ask yourself, Do I really want to carry all that pain with me for the rest of my life? The Lord wants you to take the pain from the past and release it into His hands. Then take the 16

KENNEDY STYLE PROFILE OF A TRACK DAY RIDER Over the course of the time that I have been writing for TRO I have many times covered motorcycle racing.; from local Club Racing to AHRMA to AMA Vintage and AMA Superbike. I have also briefly mentioned track day riding. Track Day riders are usually those who don’t have or necessarily want their race licenses but would like to push their skills and their bikes to new limits in a controlled environment. Meet “Harley” Mike Dietsch. For the longest time we never knew his last name but everyone knew who you were talking about when you said “Harley” Mike. We met Mike in 2009 at Nelsons Ledges Road Course. Seems Mike had seen an ad for Fasttrax Racing (now known as Motoseries) and rode out one Saturday afternoon. He came out to Nelsons Ledges on a 1973 Sportster which he says was the first bike he purchased when he was 20 years old. My husband being the social animal that he is was immediately drawn to Mike telling him that he just missed the spectator ride. (FYI the spectator ride is an opportunity to take a few laps around the track on your street bike, scooter, etc.) So Mike came out the next morning and did his spectator lap and as they say “the rest is history”.
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
He proceeded to buy himself a set of boots, leathers, and gloves and prepared the old Sportster for track day riding; covering the speedometer, headlight and brake lights, wire tying his oil plug, cap and filter, and securing the kickstand among other things. Mike says it has been a great experience. He knew from the start that this is the way a bike should be ridden using the skills he learned in class to make him a better rider both on the track and on the street. Although most track day riders ride sport bikes Mike says he got nothing but support from his fellow riders.
by: Denise Kennedy, TRO
He will be preparing the Buell for track day riding as well. Nelsons Ledges Road Course has changed ownership and is currently undergoing major renovations and improvements. With that Motoseries 2016 schedule is on hold so Mike will head to Pennsylvania and PittRace to track day ride on both the Sportster and Buell. I asked him what he likes most about track days on a summer weekend. His answer i”It’s all about the people. The riding is great but the people are what makes the experience all worth it” . As always ride safe, Denise Kennedy PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOHN MARTYNOWSKI
Many of us encouraged Mike to go for his race license and he took the race school course in 2013. But the old Sportster finally had enough and he did not complete mock starts and the course. Mike returned in 2014 and 2015 periodically on a 1979 Sportster never missing a beat. He has since purchased a 2006 Buell which he says is like night and day from the Sportsters. The Buell is lighter and responds more quickly. Ohio’s mild winter has allowed him to log a lot of miles since its purchase in October.

PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works
E
ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checksin’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
State and Stop Prizes
E
very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The Winners
I
f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s all season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2015, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes! 2016 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!
T
he 2016 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It’s really that simple!
hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website!
Y
ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booths for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.
The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.
The RIDE kicks off in MAY!
Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com 22

FIGHTING AUTISM, ONE RIDER AT A TIME
WHAT DO POKER RUNS, TECHNOLOGY, KIDS AND A DOG HAVE IN COMMON? TAKE A LESSON FROM THESE GUYS by Michele Abraham
Bikers don't become friends, they become family. Striking up a brotherhood among bikers is not uncommon. The passion for riding runs through our veins. We'll do anything we can to find an excuse to get on our bikes and feel that wind on our face and just experience that freedom. Often we join a ride for charity, putting our passion in another direction and using that to connect to people in our community.
the first clue to expanding Cassidy's world. Despite this fact, an iPad at school was not seen as an essential and the Coopers were told they could bring in their own iPad. While the law requires the purchase of a communication device within a school district for a child who needs a device to communicate, not all children qualify. Cassidy was one of these children. Talking with other parents, the Coopers realized they were not the only family in this situation. Looking for other possibilities to get an iPad in their daughter's hands were also unsuccessful because of the criteria being stringent and many times, income based.
Make It Fit aspires to “fit” the missing pieces together to help bring about more research, better treatment, and someday hopefully a cure for autism. Make It Fit engages individuals in the fitness industry, motorcycle, car, and truck enthusiasts. Make It Fit sponsors an annual ride for autism. Hoover and Cooper had different views of the root causes of autism and different ideas of how they could help individuals and families with autism, but they found a great relationship where both can meet the needs that they have seen in the community. Between the two of them, they cover Ohio with events and autism and disability awareness. Mike Hoover is the father of two boys on the autism spectrum and Founder of The Make It Fit Foundation. Twelve years ago he made a promise to his son, Adam. Watching helplessly as his precious little boy retreated into the depths of autism, Mike vowed to do whatever it took to get him “out”, or die trying. A few years later he hosted the very first All About Autism Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show, putting it together in a record 6 weeks. The response was overwhelming. Over $12,000 was raised that day, and Make It Fit's first annual event was born. A few years later, he added The Ohio Ride for Autism, a pokerrun style event. Once again, the turnout was incredible and thousands of dollars were raised to help kids with autism and their families.
It was a passion for kids that brought Craig Cooper and Mike Hoover together. Not just any kids, but kids with autism. Not just helping kids with autism either, helping to create new ways to increase access to assistance that would help both the kids and their families. The struggle for families of children with autism can be overwhelming, expensive, and exhausting. No one knows this reality more than Craig Cooper and wife, Chris. The Cooper's second child, Cassidy, was diagnosed with autism when she was 2 years old. Cassidy communicates mainly with the help of her iPad, and is rarely seen without it. As she's grown, her communication skills have improved and she will communicate without it, but her iPad is with her at all times. For many years prior to the use of the iPad, Cassidy had difficulty communicating and the introduction of the iPad at home provided

Craig turned to researching other alternatives and finding none that would provide technology for these kids who "fall through the cracks". Cooper found the Make It Fit Foundation and began a long term relationship helping these kids and their families. The Make It Fit Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by autism. The organization mission is "to develop and maintain a community of caring, unified, and knowledgeable individuals dedicated to raising money for autism research, treatment, advocacy. education, and family services until there’s an end to autism as we know it." Make It Fit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Columbus, Ohio.

It was through his participation in a motorcycle rally organized by Make It Fit where Cooper was inspired by the outpouring of support and wanted to do more. He offered to help and sold tickets for a Make It Fit motorcycle raffle in 2013. It was after this raffle that Cooper offered to do more for Make It Fit in the Cleveland area. After helping Make It Fit and finding out how much the local community wanted to directly support kids with autism and their families, Cooper decided to do a local fundraiser for Make It Fit. At his first fundraiser, he and his team raised $11,000. Due to the success of the first fundraiser, a second one was planned and raised $14,000. The Coopers decided that they wanted to expand the reach of the dollars they raised to children and families with disabilities in general, not just kids with autism. It was because this goal was outside the mission statement of Make It Fit, the Coopers OHIO’S OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
decided to create a new foundation that would help kids in the Cleveland area with disabilities. The Cooper Foundation was established in 2015 as a 501(c)3 but has been working to help families even before that designation was established. Over the last 2 years, 3 children have received iPads loaded with the latest technology to allow independent communication. Children and families were sought out and recommended by community members, teachers, and intervention specialists who found the child and family to be in need. The Cooper Foundation seeks to outfit families with equipment and technology that may be difficult to attain without financial assistance. Whether it be iPads, communication boards, ramps, wheelchairs, service animals or other “wish list” items, The Cooper Foundation will work with the family to assist them in making that wish a reality. Both Foundations started with an idea that sprang from a need. As grassroots organizations, each have strong missions to dedicate the funds raised to families in need. The best part about both is that Cooper and Hoover are also dedicated motorcycle enthusiasts with a deep passion for riding and encouraging brotherhood through the riding experience. It was riding that brought these two together and that passion has brought other riders to support their cause. “Mike [Hoover] has helped us in so many ways from advice from another parent of children with Autism, to how do we submit this form to the IRS. If it wasn’t for Mike, there would be no Cooper Foundation. Chris and I owe him everything”, says Cooper.

The 3rd Annual Fundraiser for Autism is a cooperative event between The Cooper Foundation and the Make it Fit Foundation. The foundations work together and between them cover a large portion of Ohio from Columbus to Cleveland to Sandusky. The relationship works well because the two work together to work for families and children in need. The 3rd Annual Fundraiser for Autism takes place Saturday, May 21st, 2016 from 12pm-4pm at Grindstone Tap House, 826 Front Street, Berea, Ohio. Tickets are $20 and include food and drink. To purchase tickets, go to www.thecoopfoundation.com, The Cooper Foundation Facebook page, or by contacting Craig Cooper at craig@ thecoopfoundation.com.

Ohio Bike Week
The Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event! Ohio Bike Week is undeniably the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event and is arguably one of the largest motorcycle events in the nation. The North Coast Rally has grown from a small town HOG Rally into a weeklong celebration drawing riders from all across the country. Last year’s rally continued to build on their recent success – and once again was dubbed their largest yet involving more than 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts! Ohio Bike Week is a locally owned and managed rally that was initially launched as a means of jump starting the tourist season for a region often referred to as “Vacationland” – due to the coastline and almost limitless recreational destinations for those visiting. OBW has also been a tremendous resource for local charitable organizations as well as those profiting off the visiting riders. Since its inception, over $500,000 has been generated for local non-profits – supplementing the over $60 million annually that the rally contributes to the local economy*. This year’s rally continues to develop over multiple locations – including the Mad River Harley-Davidson Campus, the downtown shoreline, and the Erie County Fairgrounds – which hosts The Legendary Broken Spoke Campground. Kick-off events are held all over the state, with the largest being a concert held at Toledo Harley-Davidson on Friday, May 27th featuring SEBASTIAN BACH. The primary focus the first weekend is on the Mad River Campus as they host a number of national acts – including EDDIE MONEY, BUCKCHERRY, and BLACKSTONE CHERRY. Popular local establishments

such as The Pump and The Original Margaritaville, as well as The Jack Daniels Barrelhouse Saloon on the waterfront feature live entertainment all weekend and provide plenty of fun for those attending the first weekend. Themed rides run all week with daily rides from Mad River Harley-Davidson and numerous local runs supporting worthwhile causes as well. Traditional rides such as the Tuesday Prison Ride and Kelley’s Island Poker Run on Wednesday are extremely popular and always draw a crowd. The Jesse James Pancreatic Cancer Ride takes place on Thursday and draws plenty for the celebrity run which ends at the Annual Comfort Inn Pool Party. Friday’s Winery Tour has become increasingly popular, hitting several local wineries and now benefits the local Biker Memorial Fund. The 8th Annual B.A.A.N.C. Owen Barker Memorial Run leaves the Knucklehead Saloon on Sunday, May 29th and supports the work of local riders to help children in need. It’s a great, boots on the ground organization that we strongly recommend supporting.
Saturday, June 4th, is the big day for Ohio Bike Week with things happening all over town. Out at the Broken Spoke Campground, registration begins at 10am for the TRO / Ohio Bike Week Bike Show. Once again, the International Master Bike Builders Association will be in town to professionally judge the show – while Thunder Roads Ohio handles the People’s Choice Voting. Out at Roeder Racing in Monroeville, staging for the George Roeder Sr. Memorial Parade begins at 10am with plenty of fun and festivities before the parade pulls out at 3pm. Out at The Pump there’s the traditional Parade Watch Party with live music by Pete “Big Dog” Fetters.
The World Famous Downtown Block Party once again kicks off with Jesse James Dupree, the perennial voice of Bike Week, as Jackyl headlines downtown on Thursday, June 2nd. Then the focus shifts to the Broken Spoke Campground (Erie County Fairgrounds) as country music stars MONTGOMERY GENTRY take to the big stage on Friday, June 3rd. “The World’s Greatest Kiss Tribute Band” – Mr. Speed keeps the party going downtown Friday night.
The craziness hits it peak on Saturday night with blow-out parties and rockin’ performances all over town. The Earthquakers will be holding court out on the Broken Spoke Campground Stage at the Erie County Fairgrounds. Downtown, Pop Evil will be performing on the Back Lot Stage and Jasmine Cain will be closing out the night at the Barrel House Saloon. It’s sure to be an incredible night and more than suitable climax to another Ohio Bike Week Rally!

I’m an Ohio Biker and this is our home state rally, but that’s not the only reason why Ohio Bike Week is easily one of my favorite rallies anywhere – and it’s not just because I’m a homer or that we work with them. Quite the contrary, we enjoy working with Ohio Bike Week because of THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
how they run their event! The folks at OBW have always taken the approach that they will throw a HUGE PARTY – and the crowds will take care of them by spending their own money as they see fit. The vast majority of the shows and entertainment is FREE – and those few things requiring admission are more than reasonably priced. The OBW masterminds have always believed that if they offer fair prices and a good product – in the form of quality entertainment in a cool setting, riders will support the rally. While you’re enjoying the rally, we ask that you make it a point to support the exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, and local businesses that make this Rally possible. You will be able to find them here in the Rally Guide, in the Pocket Guide, and through signage at their businesses. Much like this magazine itself, it’s through their support that the Ohio Bike Week organizers are able to produce one of the nation’s best motorTHUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

These are just a few or the countless things for people to see and do while taking part in Ohio Bike Week. There are so many other things that we could discuss, including the Ohio Flags of Honor display, the custom builder displays at the Broken Spoke, the Scott Gast Memorial: Battle of the Bands, and of course the Thunder Roads / Ohio Bike Week Bikini Contest – to name just a few! The entire week is packed full of performances, with over 50 bands, countless ride destinations, and so much to do and see. It is THE MIDWEST’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT with good reason!

The Bike Week Pool Party! THE PARTY JUST KEEPS GROWING EVERY YEAR! Once again, Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) has teamed up with Ohio Bike Week to host the Official Ohio Bike Week Bikini & Calendar Girl Contest! This year we’ve teamed up with AMERICAN HERITAGE MOTORCYCLES, AFFLICTION CLOTHING, TWISTED TEA, and of course our hosts – THE COMFORT INN to kick things up, once again! The entire event is hosted by TRO’s own IRON COWBOY along with a number of our famous IRON ANGELS! This year they will be awarding over $2,500 in cash and prizes – including over $500 in cash to the finalists. Additional prizes include Bike Week Prize packages, hotel stays, professional photo shoots, and of course swag from the sponsors! There are also prize opportunities for those in attendance this year. TRO will be hosting several contests and games on the deck, and the event will also be a Buckeye Thunder Run Stop. Special Bike Week prizes will be awarded to those checking in with their Thunder Run Cards at the party.

Jesse James Dupree, from Jackyl and the Full Throttle TV Show, will again be joining the party as his Annual Cancer Ride ends poolside. Each year the arrival of hundreds of bikes from this popular ride always pushes things over the top – and you never know what celebrities will be joining Jesse on his ride.
The Comfort Inn Cabana Bar is one of the best party spots for rally attendees throughout the week. The bar and pool area are open to the public throughout OBW, and it’s always a party! The friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere make it the perfect place to relax before heading downtown or after a ride.
The Bikini Party is a Bike Week tradition that has evolved into one of the most popular events of the week, with it standingroom-only 2 hours before the actual contest the last several years. The Comfort Inn has expanded the pool bar area each of the last few years to accommodate the contest crowds – and this year’s expansion includes an outside stage area to free up the valuable deck space and allow better viewing of the contestants! The rock band SCHOOL GIRL CRUSH, from Cleveland, will be providing musical entertainment for the day.
If you’re interested in being a contestant, email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for more information. Advance registration is encouraged as spots are limited. Some spots and Ohio Bike Week Passes will be awarded to winners of various Pre-Rally Parties hosted around the state by Thunder Roads Ohio. Check out the magazine and facebook page for more information and updates on these events. www.facebook. com/ThunderRoadsOhio

The Reliability Run! The Oldest “Dual-Sport” Ride in the Country? In the Spring of 1982, lifelong Toronto, Ohio resident Clark Francy co-founded the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club. Clark had owned and competed on multiple brands of motorcycles through the years prior, but carried a special fondness for the classic British singles from Birmingham. With nearly total demise of the British motorcycle industry some ten years prior, his intent was to gather local BSA faithful together and promote continued interest in the brand, as well as for all Brit bikes. From the beginning the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club (OVBSAOC) was n active group, with a gathering held each year, near to the Toronto/ Steubenville area. And these weren’t static get-togethers, either. Traileredin, prized show bikes were of course welcome, but the club always encouraged attendees to ride their vintage machines to the meets, and provided plenty of riding activities as part of the event schedule. And with a considerable number of British bike enthusiasts in the area, the annual event grew into a twice yearly BSA (based) rally, today featuring a

wide range of activities. Currently held at Cable Creek Campground, just outside of Toronto, the rallies include something for riders of just about any motorcycling interest. There’s a swap meet, a bike show, field games, an auction, themed and guided road rides, Observed Trials, and Clark’s baby – the Reliability Run. What’s a “Reliability Run”? Well, Clark is an off-road rider at heart, and knows every back road and trail in Jefferson County. And, while the paved-road mini-tours which take place during the course of OVBSAOC Rallies are great fun, he knew there were other riders like him who wanted a bit more adventure. So, a loop incorporating gravel roads, dirt roads, some mild trails, and a bit of mud and water was created. Speeds on this ride were low, the going was just challenging enough to add in some extra fun, and riders would return feeling a sense of accomplishment, their vintage machines having proven “reliable” enough to survive some adverse conditions.
still remain true to their roots which were put in place 35 years ago. The Reliability Run now attracts bikes of all types, and riders of all ages. Two key factors at work here. First, Jefferson County, Ohio is one of the best places in the whole wide world to ride a motorcycle. Beautiful, vastly-varied terrain, big hills, deep valleys with rushing streams, scenic vistas galore, a great mix of forest, pastoral farms, lovely homes and properties, and twisty, turning, low-traffic back roads winding around every which-a-way. And then there’s the really tricky part – somehow it’s all combined together to provide an enjoyable ride for just about any rider, on just about any bike. How? Basically, by incorporating two courses into every Reliability Run. Yep, for every ride, there is a main course – called the “Green” route. Ride this one and from the seat of anything from a big modern Adventure bike, to a vintage British twin, to a classic Japanese or European Enduro bike, and everything in between, you’ll enjoy approximately 100 miles of great fun and scenic riding, featuring a few challenges here and there, but nothing to really bust your butt. Ah,
In the years since, OVBSAOC Rallies have become ever-more diverse, yet
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

but all along the Green route there are turnoffs for the optional “Red” sections. These are where the guys (and gals) who do want to bust their butts a bit get to indulge in even more fun. And each Red section eventually rejoins the Green route, and so on and so forth. Providing “something for everyone” is no easy task. First there is the challenge of simply finding anywhere to ride off-road. Even though Jefferson is a rural county, these days there are farms and residences everywhere, and nearly every square inch of land is posted and off-limits. It is only through years of effort and ongoing negotiation with property owners that the BSA Club has been able to continue offering riders this terrific experience year after year. And then, even after off-road access has been achieved, it must be just the right kind of trail – not too hard, not too easy, and there’s always the concern over potential environmental impact. Can’t have riders going out into the woods and disappearing into a bottomless mud bog, so large that it can be seen from space. And yet, the Red sections can’t be too easy either, or the KTM guys won’t come back. Hard to put it all together? You bet!
Sport bikes, as well as Milwaukee v-twins, Jap street bikes of all flavors, and lots of unique and unusual vintage machines of varied brands. The club’s bike show (held during the August Rally) also welcomes any and all machines, with multiple classes and lots of awards beyond those which are BSA-specific and British-specific. Plus the Rallies are simply great, fun events. Very casual, very familyfriendly, with lots of grass and trees, a beautiful clear running stream on one side of the campgrounds, and gorgeous green hills on the other, themselves featuring multiple streams and a couple of very impressive waterfalls – all on club-campground property. And cheap – oh, the Rallies are cheap. Five bucks per day for admission. Eight dollars per day includes camping. Have some junk
you want to turn into cash? A vendor spot in the swap meet is just $30.00 for the whole weekend, and includes two admission passes! All the guided, themed road rides are FREE to participate. Trials riders – Youth Trials participation is FREE, and the adult Trials events are just $10.00 per rider. The Reliability Run entrants pay just $15.00, which includes a FREE commemorative pin and sticker for the first 100 riders. Plus, an awesome, quality Reliability Run t-shirt can be had for just TEN bucks! Additionally, there are restroom and shower facilities on site, and we’ve got some awesome food vendors – all homemade stuff! Plus, there’s an excellent band Friday night at the August Rally, and Pickin’ & Grinnin’ Saturday night of both Rallies – bring any instrument and join right in.
And yet, the small group of dedicated individuals who make up the core of the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Group manage to make it all happen each year. Additionally, the OVBSAOC has seen to evolve and recreate itself over the years. Currently, the mainstay at club Rallies continues to be vintage British and European machines, but you’re just as likely to see plenty of modern and vintage Trials and Dual-

And if all that isn’t enough, the August Rally traditionally wraps up with a drawing for that year’s Raffle Bike. Yes, each year the OVBSAOC raffles off a prime, classic BSA motorcycle. For 2016 it’s an immaculately restored and ready to ride BSA 441 Victor, a super-fun bike that anyone would be happy to call their own. If all this sounds interesting, get yourself on down to Cable’s Creek Campground the weekends of June 4&5, and August 5-7. Location is 2770 County Road 56, Toronto, Ohio, and there’s lots of information to be found at www.ohiovalleybsaownersclub. com. Check us out on Facebook, too. Don’t delay either, as nothing is forever, especially when it comes to the Reliability Run. With the pressures of ever more restricted land access, plus Father Time to deal with, the club has cut back on its schedule. June’s Reliability Run will still feature the fullon 100-mile ride, with all the optional Red sections, but the August event will be much more modest. Just 35 miles or so, mostly just back roads – a throwback to the original Reliability Runs. Great for the older machines. So mark your calendars and don’t miss out. The Reliability Run – oldest Dual Sport ride in the country, is one fun ride. Enjoy it while you still can.

Weed Control Can you smell that spring air? This is typically the time of year I write about all the Dandelion Clubs. You know, the ones that pop up every spring like “rag” weeds. I think I might confidently be able to report that for the most part, that ship has finally sailed. And thank the heavens above! You may be wondering what I’m talking about if you haven’t been reading this column for the past several years. I’m talking about the two or three buddies who all bought motorcycles and decided to call all their friends, cousins, brothers, sisters, etc and buy the same patch online and call themselves a motorcycle club. Of course the one whos idea it was gets to be “President”. It’s his garage after all which makes him the most qualified of course and he’s even seen every MC episode of Gangland! It seems that finally with the conclusion of the made for TV bike shows like SOA & Laughing Devils, the novelty is hopefully in the rear view mirror and those garaged low miles never ridden scooters have flooded the used bike market. Husbands are back at home with their wives and kids on the weekends doing yard work. The weeds have been pulled.
I know, I know, I’ve heard the argument. “I’m an American! It’s my right to do whatever I want”. Blah blah blah. I’ve heard every cry baby argument ever made that many Fake & Poser MC Not Real Clubs have hung their hat on nationwide. That attitude is a primary reason why they shouldn’t be wearing a patch in the first place. Everyone doesn’t get a trophy, and everyone shouldn’t wear an MC Patch. 104 104
The truth is I know a lot of folks who have left clubs in the past 12 months. I know a lot of clubs that have totally dissolved in the past 24 months and those people are much happier. It’s not that some don’t still love to ride and will continue to do so, but see they were never in a Real MC to begin with no matter what they sewed on their back. They were in a volunteer social organization with too many rules. When you take something you enjoy, and make it work it’s not always so much fun anymore. I can tell you from current first hand knowledge and experience; it’s very often the opposite of fun. But see the MC lifestyle was not born out of a desire to have “fun”. It was built often times on pure necessity and survival. You might think that’s not the case this day and age but I assure you it is still as viable today as it was 60+ years ago. Am I in a gang? No. People and most often law enforcement like to use that excuse to validate their profiling of every club wearing a matching t-shirt or rag. It’s simply not true. Do I need that type of negative labeling in my life? No I don’t. To the opposite, I probably jeopardize much by even participating and wearing a diamond, so why do I? It’s simple. I love it. Is every “MC Brother” real? No, they aren’t. You just never know because it’s a very large membership. But in enjoying it, I don’t get to make up my own rules, MC Protocols, and MC History. I respect the past; I don’t attempt to disrespect it by making up our own total BS rules to accommodate not following club protocols like many poser associations
THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER
do. That’s the complete opposite of what it means to even live the lifestyle. I guess some people’s grandparents didn’t ever teach them, “If you’re going to do something, it’s worth doing it right”. These are the same people giving away participation trophies at their local schools. It’s pathetic. The riding season is just beginning for many of you. Enjoy it this year. Shed away the dumb $hi% and just enjoy your motorcycle. Enjoy the rowdy events and rallies. That’s actually what it means to be a biker. Being a clubber is a totally different obligation that should be left to those that have earned the respect to carry on the tradition. Ohio Bike Week, Lima Bike Rally, Chillicothe Rodeo, Sturgis, Daytona, Myrtle Beach, leathers, sexy women, debauchery, loud pipes, kicking up dirt, blasting down the highway or leaning into the curves of a country road, awesome bands and great food. That’s what it’s all about folks… Enjoy it and don’t be a weed in the garden. Enjoy your summer, and thanks for reading. I appreciate ya!

How to Choose an Artist for your Custom Tattoo decided Sto getothatyou’ve you want a tattoo, and
furthermore you’ve decided you want something custom. Maybe you decided that you didn’t want to pick a design out of a book or off the wall of a shop for something that you are going to be wearing for the rest of your life. A custom tattoo is often a much more meaningful way of expressing yourself through body art – but the key is finding an artist that can create the masterpiece you’ve envisioned. Custom tattoos can be anything you want them to be and in any style, but you have to find a professional that can deliver what you have in mind for your custom tattoo. Finding the right tattoo artist is crucial to getting exactly what you want, and it can be a challenge if you’re not careful. Here are some tips for finding the right tattoo artist for you.
artists will invest in their work and promote their business. Thunder Roads Magazine works with a variety of artists that have proven themselves to be both skilled and professional in terms of maintaining themselves to established standards. We showcase custom work every month in our magazine so that
Once you’ve found a custom tattoo artist whose work appeals to you and looks like what you want, the next step is to have a consultation. If the tattoo artist is busy, you may need to make an appointment to come in and talk. If not, you can usually talk about the kind of tattoo you want right then. Once you
you can see some of the masterpieces created by artists within our own area and nationally.
are sure of your tattoo artist’s abilities, you need to assess whether or not he is enthusiastic about doing your tattoo and willing to work with you to make the drawing for it. You can find a great tattoo artist, but finding one willing to satisfy your needs and is receptive to your ideas is just as important as having talent.
Research Tattoo Parlors in Your Area When you first start looking for a custom tattoo artist, talk to people you know about their tattoos. Ask them where they went, who did the tattoo, and what their impressions of the shop were like. Don’t be afraid to approach a stranger with a great tattoo to ask questions. Most people with custom tattoos are extremely proud of the work they’ve had done and will be happy to tell you all about it, especially if you tell them why you’re asking. People with tattoos often feel connected to each other in some sort of strange, shared experience kind of way. Just talking to people around town will give you an idea of what tattoo shops have a reputation for cleanliness and high quality of work. You may also find yourself told where not to go, so take these warnings seriously. On a personal note, I know an unfortunate young man who decided to try a brand new tattoo shop that was advertising a special. He ended up with a custom tattoo of his guitar with the name of the guitar spelled wrong. In the custom tattoo world, reputation is everything. Tattoo parlors and custom tattoo artists get most of their business through word of mouth. A great custom tattoo walking around town is a much better advertisement than a coupon in the phone book as far as tattoos are concerned. However, professional
Find a Tattoo Artist Who Meets Your Needs Once you have an idea of where you want to go, the next step is to make contact and meet the artist. Go to their studio and spend some time looking at the tattoo artists’ portfolios. A portfolio is different than the pictures (called flash) hanging on the walls. A portfolio is an actual book of photographs that a tattoo artist takes of tattoos she has done. A tattoo artist’s portfolio is a reflection of what she feels is her best work and reflects the range of her talents, or showcases her particular expertise. It’s worth noting that a professional artist should have a professional looking portfolio showcasing their work. Like any craftsman, they should take pride in their work and their portfolio may be their only evidence of the masterpieces that they have created. If the artist doesn’t have a portfolio or simply as a collection of cell phone shots – that may be cause for concern. If you’re especially drawn to a particular portfolio, the next question to ask yourself is whether or not the tattoo artist is skilled in the style of tattoo you want. There are many different styles of tattoos, from tribal, black and gray fineline, to graffiti style, and every tattoo artist has a specialty.

Meet Your Custom Tattoo Artist Halfway Finding a custom tattoo artist that you love is great, but getting the tattoo you want requires more than just tracking down the right person for the job. Meet your new tattoo artist halfway during the creative process so that he can more quickly assess what you are in the market for. When you talk to your tattoo artist about making your custom tattoo, it helps to tell her more than just what you want your tattoo to look like. While your custom tattoo artist will make a drawing of the tattoo you’ll receive, you need to help her figure out what that drawing should look like. Take in drawings or pictures of things or other tattoos that match the style or subject of your tattoo. Explain the symbolism behind the tattoo. Make a rough sketch of what you want, even if your drawing abilities are usually limited to stick figures. The more you give your tattoo artist to go on, the more likely you are to end up with a good drawing the first time. When you go back to look at the drawing your tattoo artist has made of your custom tattoo, feel free to suggest changes or modifications. If the drawing looks nothing like what you had in mind, don’t be afraid to say so or look for another tattoo artist. You have the final say about what goes on your skin, so don’t worry about offending his artistic sensibilities. It’s important that you feel comfortable with the artist. You are entrusting your body – both visually in terms of the work that’s done and physically in terms of OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
your health and the artist’s adherence to proper sanitary standards. If the shops a mess and it appears as though the artist hasn’t bathed in months – how comfortable are you that he’s following the proper hygiene standard in regards to his needles and equipment.
As you’re developing the design never forget that it’s YOUR tattoo. Never let the artist talk you into something you’re not comfortable with. Regardless of what they want to create or what they think looks cool – it’s YOUR tattoo.
The artist should also treat you with respect and be appreciative of the fact that you are entrusting yourself to their care and artistic ability. If the artist is rude or condescending towards you or acts as though you are privileged to warrant their time – chances are you’re not going to end up getting exactly what you want.
You should get an estimate of how much your custom tattoo will cost before your tattoo artist starts inking you. Some tattoo artists charge an hourly rate for custom work, while others charge based on the size and complexity of the design. Either way, be prepared to pay more for a custom tattoo than for something you pick off a wall.
Price is NOT the most important factor.
Remember that tattoo artists work in the service industry, and they should be tipped accordingly. For a tattoo artist who is willing to take the time to talk to you about your tattoo and draw it for you, be especially generous. While the talking is free, that time they spent just talking was time they could have spent actually tattooing someone else for money. When it comes to custom tattoo work, be willing to shell out some cash. This is one aspect of your life where being frugal won’t get you anywhere good. The best custom tattoo artists charge more than others because the quality of their work is higher and people are willing to pay for it. In five years, you won’t remember how much you paid for your tattoo, but you will still have to look at it every day. Contributed by Thunder Roads Ohio, Iron Cowboy

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT How will YOU react when you're attacked? When was the last time you were in a fight? We're talking about a real, physical altercation where someone was punching you in the face or wrestling with you on the ground and trying to hurt you. If you're like most men, your last fight was probably in grade school, assuming you've been in a fight at all. If you're a woman, you've probably never been in a fight. You can pat yourself on the back for being mature enough to have avoided a fight for most of your life, but in a self defense situation your lack of fighting experience could lead you to make a bad decision. Here's a quote from In the Name of Self Defense by Mark MacYoung: Until you: 1. Develop the ability to take a hit without having an emotional meltdown 2. Have firsthand experience that you can be struck and it won’t "destroy" you 3. Don’t get all trauma-drama-esque and "triggered" over having been hit in the past 4. Get over your fear of being struck You:
1. Have no baseline to accurately assess danger 2. Are likely to freak out and emotionally overreact when confronted 3. More likely to get furious and overreact to the insult of being struck rather than the actual danger 4. Will attempt to negotiate and deescalate from a position of fear 5. Will attempt to deal with the situation from a position of overconfidence 6. Will be reacting to past events instead of what’s happening now. That's a pretty sobering observation. But this is something most criminals know about you. They choose their targets carefully and often use sudden physical force to overwhelm and startle you. A mugger, for example, might casually walk up to you then bash you in the face, knowing that in most cases, this will cause you to "freak out," giving them the upper hand. Sometimes a criminal doesn't even have to touch you. Just the thought of being in a fight could scramble your brain. In this mental state, will you make a good decision or a poor decision? Will you use lethal force when the threat doesn't
warrant it? Or will you be too slow to react when your life is actually in danger? No one is saying that you have to put up with a beating. You DO have the moral and legal right to defend yourself when you are in fear of death or severe bodily harm. The point here is just to point out that your reaction to the shock of being attacked is relative to your experience with physical altercations. Most "gun guys," and most people who carry a firearm for protection, do little more than go to the range once in a blue moon to poke a few holes in a paper target. This might make you somewhat more proficient with your firearm, but it won't do much to prepare you for the emotional reaction you may have when assaulted. If you've boxed or wrestled in school or taken martial arts training where you could spar with an opponent, you have a big advantage. You know you can get "hit" and you won't fall apart. If you have no experience like this, it would be wise to get some. While it can be intimidating, taking a "fighting" class, as opposed to a "shooting" class, could do wonders for your self confidence and dramatically improve your decision-making ability in a physical altercation. And the more intimidated you are of taking a class like this, the more you NEED a class like this.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT CAUTION: Criminals don't think like you do! by Dean Rieck, Second Call Defense
A couple years ago, I attended a 3-day handgun class at Tactical Defense Institute in West Union, Ohio. One of the many ideas that stuck with me was what the training center's owner, John Benner, said in the classroom portion of the training: "Criminals don't think like you or me. Their minds work differently. They want what they want and all you are to them is an object in their way." That's pretty chilling when you really think about it. John is a veteran police officer and comes at his know-how from practical experience. But there's research to back up the idea that bad guys just don't think like normal people. Inside the Criminal Mind, by Stanton E. Samenow Ph.D., makes the case that criminals think in stark, black and white terms that leave no room for reason, negotiation, empathy for victims. Here's an excerpt from this book posted on PsychologyToday.com: The criminal does not know what moderation is! In his thinking and behavior, he more frequently than not goes to extremes. It is critical to understand this aspect of his psychological makeup. Failure to do so can endanger a person who interviews, attempts to counsel, or in other ways interacts with a criminal.
this view that everything he does must be tops and recognized as such by others. Everything has the same importance. This is not a quest for excellence but a result of his own pretensions. The criminal demands that others recognize him as "number one" when it comes to work. If he walks into a restaurant seeking a job, he believes that he should be the manager, not a "lackey" who has to undertake tasks that he regards as beneath him. In even the smallest interactions, the criminal is determined to prevail. Thus, he does not know what a discussion involves. He is insistent on proving his point, not exchanging views. Only what he thinks and says matters. Others disagreeing with him he interprets as threatening, even on a trivial point. People are either for him or against him. There are no in betweens. If you don't go along with what he wants, support his position, agree with what he is saying, he will ignore you, try to verbally beat you down or, at worst, attack you physically.
Clearly, this black and white view of the world leads to a criminal's expectations being constantly thwarted. Constantly, he is perceiving that he has been put down or diminished by others even when no offense is intended. This is a factor in the constant anger that the criminal experiences because he frequently does not receive the response from others that he desires and believes he is due. While no one in their right mind wants to harm another human being, you shouldn't allow yourself to make the mistake of assuming that a threatening criminal can always be "talked down" or reasoned with. What may seem reasonable to you or me, such as telling him to calm down or suggesting that you work things out, might be completely misinterpreted. So it's not just aggressive behavior that poses a risk. It's the fact that when you find yourself facing violence from a criminal, you may be dealing with someone who simply doesn't see you as worth talking to or dealing with. You see him as a bad "person." He may see you as an inconvenient "object" to eliminate.
In his mind, the criminal must be number one or else he counts for nothing -- an intolerable situation. You can see this even when he is a child. If others don't play by his rules, he refuses to play at all. If he is not recognized as tops in any endeavor that matters to him -- e.g., sports, academics -- then it isn't worth doing. Even in a menial task in prison such as buffing a floor, it must shine. If someone steps on it before he has completed the job, he becomes furious. He is indiscriminate in 110

RECIPES
This is one of those EASY family favorites that you really cant mess up. Its awesome over mashed potatoes or rice but give it a try on a baked potato topped with cheese – Oh ya baby! Crockpot Salisbury Steak Serves 4-6 (or 3 hungry bikers)
2 lg potatoes, diced to ½” chunks ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp garlic, minced 1 red or yellow bell p epper, seeded, diced to ½” chunks 4 ounces chorizo, thinly sliced 1 lg tomato, diced to ½ chunks ¼ tsp black pepper ¼ tsp cumin ½ tsp chili powder 4 large eggs 2 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro
1½ lbs ground beef 1 egg ¼ cup onion, diced finely ⅓ cup bread crumbs 3 tbsp milk 1 tbsp garlic ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper 6-8 oz sliced mushrooms 1 onion, diced 1½ cups beef broth 1oz package brown dry gravy mix 2 tbsp ketchup 1 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp parsley 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp corn starch 4 tbsp water
Place potatoes in a pot, cover with 1 inch of water, stir in 1/2 tsp. salt and bring to a boil.
Combine ground beef, egg, ¼ cup onion, bread crumbs, milk, garlic, salt and pepper
Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers)
•
Reduce heat and simmer until tender, drain
Form the mixture into patties (you can get 6-8 depending on the size)
•
Warm oil in an ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat, and add onion and garlic, cook until tender.
In a frying pan over medium high heat lightly brown the meat patties just to brown them on each side.
•
Add in the bell pepper, chorizo and tomato, cook, stirring often, until pepper is soft. (the chorizo may crumble apart but its ok, just mix it in)
Meanwhile place the place mushrooms and onions over the bottom of your crock pot
•
Stir in potatoes, season with salt, pepper, cumin and chili powder, mix well and cook, stirring occasionally, until potatoes begin to brown
In a bowl combine the beef broth, gravy mix, ketchup, and mustard, parsley, and Worcestershire sauce – mix well
•
Reduce heat to medium and press mixture firmly into the pan and allow it to cook until it crisp on the bottom.
Pour broth mixture over beef patties then set cooker for 5 on low or 3 hours on high
•
Preheat broiler to high then break eggs onto hash and then place pan under broiler Cook until whites are set.
Once cooked, remove patties and set to the side on a plate
•
Sprinkle with cilantro and serve with fresh sour cream and avocado

Then lay in the beef patties
Meanwhile turn the cooker on high to get the broth mixture really hot In a small bowl or cup mix the cornstarch and water with a fork to be sure there are no lumps Pour mixture into the broth in the cooker and stir well – this will begin to thicken Cook for about 5 minutes then add beef patties back into the cook and toss everything gently so the gravy can coat the meat Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or cous cous

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... Payback
A man came home from work A man came home from work, sat down in his favorite chair, turned on the TV, and said to his wife, "Quick, bring me a beer before it starts." She looked a little puzzled, but brought him a beer. When he finished it, he said, "Quick, bring me another beer. It's gonna start." This time she looked a little angry, but brought him a beer. When it was gone, he said, "Quick, another beer, it's gonna start any second." "That's it!" She blows her top, "You bastard! You waltz in here, flop your fat a@#@$ down, don't even say hello to me and then expect me to run around like your slave. Don't you realize that I cook and clean and wash and iron all day long?" The husband sighed. "Oh @%^@, it's started. Smartie "If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one student rose to her feet. "Now then young lady, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" inquired the teacher with a sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself."

A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. Worried that it might be a second surgery the doctors hadn't told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his hairy chest were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off. Written in large black letters was the sentence: "Get well soon....... from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week Stephanie's Husband Stephanie's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she had stayed by his bedside each and every day. One day, when he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he whispered, eyes full of tears, "You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times.
There was this bear & rabbit in the woods..... The bear was beating-up this rabbit something fierce. He was throwing the rabbit, stomping on his head, kicking him up into the air, etc. As they were fighting, the bear kicked over a lamp and out popped a genie. The genie said, "I will give each of you three wishes". The bear said, "I want all bears in this forest to be female". Ok, poof, it was done by the genie. The rabbit said, "I want a motorcycle helmet". Ok, poof, it was done by the genie. The bear said, "For my second wish, I want all the bears in that forest over there to be female also". Ok, poof, it was done by the genie. The rabbit said, "For my second wish, I want a Suzuki Hayabusa". Ok, poof, it was done by the genie. The bear said, "For my final wish, I want all the bears in all the forests to be female". Ok, poof, it was done by the genie. The rabbit, while wearing his new helmet and sitting on his new motorcycle, revved the engine and said, "For my last wish, I want that bear to be gay".
When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health started failing, you were still by my side. You know what?" "What, dear?" Stephanie gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth. "I think you're bad luck!"
