FROM THE PUBLISHER
E
ach month, I write the Letter from the Publisher as one of my last tasks of producing the magazine. After spending hours going over materials, events, and countless photographs I’m often overwhelmed by how many things we have going on in our little corner of the world. We have an almost dizzying array of options in terms of places to ride and things to do almost every week – even if we just stay right here in Ohio. If we expand our horizons to consider our neighboring states or some of the national events – we truly do have an almost limitless number of choices in terms of ride destinations. In many ways, we are almost spoiled by the number of options we have. During the winter, we host several of the premier national bike shows – including both the International Motorcycle Show (Cleveland – focusing on manufacturers) and the Easyriders Invitational Show (Columbus – focusing on custom biker builders). In addition we have a number of smaller regional motorcycle shows that in many ways offer just as much. During the summer, the number of riding options truly is overwhelming in many cases. If you browse through our event section (starting page 98), you’ll find hundreds of events all across the state. These include poker runs, charity rides, bike shows, weekend rallies, and countless other options. If you turn back a few more pages, you’ll find the Twisted Tea Bike Night Pages (pg. 118). They highlight some of the best bike nights across the states – events that anyone with a bike and the right attitude can attend. Our center calendar includes a select number of recommended events, and the Buckeye Thunder Run Event Listing represents an even more select number of stops that we will be at. At each of these stops you can show your Ride Card and register for your chance to win great prizes! Don’t have a card – don’t worry! You can pick yours up at these same stops. As I mentioned last month, owning a motorcycle is just the first step. Next comes riding, and then you need to head out and join the motorcycle community. Whatever your niche, whatever your interests – there is most likely a segment of the motorcycle community that matches up fairly well. If you’re new to riding, you may not even know what your “niche” is. Don’t let that deter you, though – riding is just like life in general, in this regard. It’s not until we get out look around, that we discover what it is that truly drives us. It’s only through experiencing life that we truly discover ourselves – and hopefully a few cool folks along the way! Ride Strong and Live Free!

Flag Burning? Not on our watch! (7/1/2015) The Blaze reported on July 1st, “Activists Planned to Burn U.S. Flag in NYC Park — When They Showed Up, These Guys Were Waiting”. Anti-police activists were set to burn the American flag at a New York City park Wednesday evening, but their plans seemingly changed when dozens of bikers and veterans came out to counter protest. Flocking to Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park, individuals opposed to burning the U.S. flag waited for the “Disarm NYPD” group to arrive. While most urged for peace, several bikers threatened violence toward anyone who would burn the American flag. Seemingly intimidated by the large group gathered in support of the American flag, the anti-police activists decided to change plans. About 30 minutes after the scheduled flag burning was supposed to begin, the group set fire to one flag at a far corner of the park away from counter protesters. When word got out that the flag burning was underway, dozens of counter
protesters, along with the NYPD, sprinted toward the scene. Emotions quickly escalated and one biker pushed a man suspected of being associated with the flag burning to the ground. Moments later, bikers and other counter protesters chased the anti-police activists out of the park, running after them while some threatened violence. As one woman suspected of being with the anti-police group left the park, a crowd gathered around her. “Shame, shame, shame!” some shouted toward the woman as officers provided her with protection.” “Get the f*** out of the country if you don’t like it!” another echoed. Organizers had said earlier that the flag burning was aimed at combatting racism and social injustice. “There will be no peace until we tear down this system of oppression,” the group wrote on the event’s Facebook page. “It isn’t enough to take the flag
“What is going (on) in Fort Greene Park right now? Flag burning, bikers, cops everywhere…” -
down; we must put an end to white supremacy once and for all.” When the event attracted online attention, “Disarm NYPD” defended the burning of the American flag in an online statement. “We find it a sign of the times that people can care so much about a piece of cloth, while at the same time be so quiet about black churches being burned all over the country,” a post on Facebook said. “Perhaps this is the great difference between us and the so-called ‘patriots’. While they express their loyalty to symbols, we express our loyalty to the lives of the oppressed.” “So, we will burn the American flag, a symbol of oppression and genocide, and in the same action, dismantle our stunted, cynical expectations of what is possible in the world,” the group’s statement concluded. “The current trajectory of history is unsustainable. It is completely unrealistic to desire things stay as they are, and more unrealistic, even abominable, to desire to ‘go back to our roots’. We, the dreamers, are the true realists. We know things can’t continue this way, so we commit to building a better world. A world better than America.”
-Oliver Darcy, TheBlaze.com
Oddly enough, I don’t see any motorcycles in the pictures I’ve seen – but everyone is calling the patriotic folks defending the flag “bikers”. Is that just because people realize that when it comes to standing up for our country and looking out for others – it’s the bikers that they turn to? When the families of service men and women are harassed by hate mongers – it’s the bikers (Patriot Guard, etc) that rise up and do something. Who do they call upon to escort the fallen through their hometowns – the bikers. So who else would they expect to defend our flag – of course, it’s the bikers.

Lane Splitting I have to admit that I am at a complete loss as to why so many motorcycle advocacy groups are getting behind Lane Splitting. At the 2015 Thunder In The Boro, in “Lane splitting refers to a two-wheeled vehicle moving between roadway lanes of Streetsboro on June 27th, Fred Mathis vehicles that are proceeding in the same direction. More narrowly, it refers to made a call to Josh Sorrell – and let him overtaking slow or stopped vehicles by traveling between lanes. It is also sometimes know that he was the winner of a new called lane sharing, whitelining, filtering, or stripe-riding.” 2015 Harley-Davidson Street Glide! Apparently the argument is that motorcycle riders can safely navigate between slower moving cars – riding the striped line between the lanes they are in. The purpose being to get through traffic jams or simply past the slower cages. The most fundamental argument I see against this – other than the obvious concern over cars wandering around within their lanes and that space getting a little tight – is that does that mean that cars can now move up into a lane alongside me? Short of cutting me off, the most irritating and threatening move a driver (in a car) can make while I’m riding is to come up alongside me from behind… within my own lane. I can count on one hand the number of times it’s happened, and each time I was grateful that I had a passenger on the back of my bike. I was concerned for their safety due to the possibility of sliding into or getting hit from behind by the car – but I was grateful for the fact that I was on my best behavior due to my passenger… I might have otherwise expressed my displeasure to the driver in a socially unacceptable manner….. How is that different than lane splitting? If we are no longer going with the approach that a motorcycle is entitled to a full lane… are cagers able to come into “our space”? I don’t even like it when motorcycle riders I don’t know – come into that space, especially when I’m traveling at higher speeds. I certainly don’t want a cager with a cell phone in their hand riding next to me in my lane! Maybe I’m missing something, since a lot of people’s who’s opinion I highly respect seem to be for lane splitting. If so, please enlighten me…. You can always email me at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com or better yet, friend us on facebook. I opened up the same discussion, and we’ve had a lot of people comment away. Nobody’s convinced me yet – but I’m listening to everyone! - The Iron Cowboy THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

By Keith “Elmo” Tickle, Ohio State President -- U.S. Veterans MC (USVMC)
Alright; let’s get back on the road again! This month’s article is very critical for each and every Veteran we know. Last month we ensured you had Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Benefits. This month we are going to address your Disability Compensation (DC) and what that really means. It is probably second greatest benefit a Veteran can receive but it is the least applied for. If approved, DC could be your tax free monetary benefit!! It is paid to Veterans with disabilities resulting from a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. So let’s open up the “DC throttle” and go. As
stated above, DC is a monthly tax-free benefit paid to Veterans who are at least 10% disabled because of injuries or diseases that were incurred in or aggravated during active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training. A disability can apply to physical conditions, such as a chronic knee condition, as well as a mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To put it in plain biker language … it puts “cash in your pockets!” Now who doesn’t like that? But don’t take this old bikers word for it; look at the relationship of money with disability rate you could be missing out on at the Veterans Compensation Benefits table here:
http://www.benefits.va.gov/COMPENSATION/resources_comp01.asp
Hopefully you looked and those figures caught your attention. The benefit amount you saw is graduated according to the degree of the Veteran's disability on a scale from 10 percent to 100 percent (in increments of 10 percent). Compensation may also be paid for disabilities that are considered related or secondary to disabilities occurring in service and for disabilities presumed to be related to circumstances of military service, even though they may arise after service. Generally, the degrees of disability specified are also designed to compensate for considerable loss of working time from exacerbations or illnesses. Plus, if you have dependents, an additional allowance may be added if your combined disability is rated 30% or greater. Your compensation may be offset if you receive military retirement pay, disability severance pay, or separation incentive payments. So what are the qualifications to be eligible for DC and how do I get paid? First, you must have had service in the Uniformed Services on active duty, or Active duty for training, or Inactive duty training. Then the next step to your validation is that you must have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions (reference the different types of DD214s discussed previously). Lastly, the DC review will take everything into account and determine if you are at least 10% disabled by an
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
injury or disease that was incurred in or aggravated during active duty or active duty for training, or inactive duty training. KEY NOTE: If you were on inactive duty for training, the disability must have resulted from injury, heart attack, or stroke.
So what “proof” do you need to apply? You need medical evidence that a current physical or mental disability exists AND, evidence of a relationship between your disability and an injury, disease, or event in military service. Your medical records or a medical opinion is required to establish this relationship. That is it! Under certain circumstances, VA may even conclude that certain current disabilities were caused by service, even if there is no specific evidence proving this in your particular claim. The cause of a disability is presumed for the following Veterans who have certain diseases: 1) Former prisoners of war 2) Veterans who have certain chronic or tropical diseases that become evident within a specific period of time after discharge from service 3) Veterans who were exposed to ionizing radiation, mustard gas, or Lewisite while in service 4) Veterans who were exposed to certain herbicides, such as by serving in Vietnam 5) Veterans who served in Southwest Asia during the Gulf War.
There you have it; that easy! We went over what DC is, the money associated with it and finished up with the proof you need … now please apply if you never have. I know this is a lot of information, but it is definitely worth digesting and understanding. Hitting a traffic jam now and have to focus on the road … come back next month as we will talk about the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program. Until then; ride safe, and always keep the doors of wisdom open. How to Apply:
1) Apply online using eBenefits https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits/ 2) Work with an accredited representative or agent http://www.va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation/index.asp 3) Go to a VA regional office USVMC is a non-profit 501(c) (19) organization driven to show respect and support for all Veterans who served honorably. USVMC is a proud member of the Ohio Confederation of Clubs (COC). Ohio COC is rich in Veteran support initiatives and can assist with critical Veteran necessities.
If you have a Veteran need, please speak to a member of COC or please email elmo.usvmcoh@gmail.com

FROM THE BACK OF THE BIKE I love summer!!!! Yeah..we have had a strange one but when the sun shines, we forget about the rain. Until 30 minutes later when it rains again! I also love attending events sponsored by Thunder Roads. Margaritaville was hopping with lots of fun people and bikes. The sun was shining, the food was good, the band was great and the beer was cold. That pretty much spells a good time which was had by all. So check out the pictures and see if you recognize anyone! Speaking of summer, does anyone else think it is going by rather quickly? It’s August already and we are preparing for one of our favorite events; The Easy Rider Rodeo in Chillicothe over Labor Day Weekend.
BY NANCY BEACH
I say this every year but I am going to say it again. Send me your fun summer stories. A lot of winter lies ahead and I can use some new and different adventures to share. Also, if you do come to the rodeo..stop and say HI! We are in the camping area and you will see the Thunder Roads banner. I will take a picture of you and your bike and you may just appear in one of our stories! Take advantage of those remaining days that offer sunshine and I will see you at the rodeo…or maybe at a Bike Night…or maybe at a poker run or just maybe anywhere…I’m the one on the back of the bike!
We go every year and enjoy the bikes, the camping, the people and the rodeo. And we always…I mean always…stop and visit with our friends at the Lost Tribe Clubhouse! They are welcoming and open it up for the rodeo. Stop by and say that Nancy sent you! They are fun and the beer is extremely cold and priced just right. Of course I will have lots of pictures as we get ready to go. For now, here are a few as a reminder of the fun we had last year. You just may want to put the rodeo on your list of fun things you need to do this summer. So..we start the summer out with Ohio Bike Week and end it with the Easy Rider Rodeo. And the fun in between that includes Bike Nights with Thunder Roads, poker runs and regular visits to Quaker Steak for their weekly bike nites with great entertainment! Yes, I love summer!

REPORT 2016 AMSOIL Arenacross Schedule Announced ELLENTON, Fla. (July 15, 2015) - After the most successful season in history, Feld Motor Sports® announced the 2016 AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael's Road to Supercross, schedule today, which will consist of a 14-round season to crown a champion. The 2016 season will once again kick off from Cincinnati's US Bank Arena on Saturday, January 9, traveling to a total of 13 different states across the country. The championship will culminate with the season finale in Las Vegas for the second time ever on Friday, May 6, featuring the first ever visit to Orleans Arena as the precursor to the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, finale at Sam Boyd Stadium. AMSOIL Arenacross enjoyed groundbreaking achievements both on the track and in the stands during the 2015 campaign. The battle for the title was closer than ever before, with the season-ending Race to the Championship bringing the fight all the way down to the final race of the season. The championship was ultimately decided by one of the most dramatic and exciting moments in AMSOIL Arenacross history as rivals Jacob Hayes and Kyle Regal came together on the opening lap of the season's last Main Event, with Regal emerging for his first career title. That memorable finale in Las Vegas proved to be the fitting conclusion to a season that saw some of the highest live event attendance ever recorded for AMSOIL Arenacross. The incredible growth of the sport over the past year has led to one of the most dynamic championship schedules for 2016, which will feature six new stops and a multitude of firsts for AMSOIL Arenacross. The first ever AMSOIL Arenacross tripleheader will take place at Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, featuring three nights of compelling action. Several rounds later, AMSOIL Arenacross will make its long-awaited debut in the heart of the supercross and arenacross racing industry of Southern California, with the championship's inaugural visit to Citizen's Business Bank Arena in Ontario, located in the nation's second-largest media market of Los Angeles. The following weekend, AMSOIL Arenacross will make its first 14
foray outdoors when it travels to legendary Salinas Sports Complex, home of the California Rodeo Salinas. This round of the championship will also feature a Sunday race date, scheduled to take place under sunny afternoon skies. As reigning AMSOIL Arenacross Champion, Regal will defend his title against a highly talented field of veteran riders and rising stars led by Hayes, last season's championship runner-up who will return to the perennial contending Team Babbitt's Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki team. The emotions of last season's wild finish still linger for this duo and both head to 2016 sharing unfinished business with one another. "It was exciting how competitive 2015 was with the championship coming to a colliding finish at the Las Vegas finale, those guys were going for it, each and every time they were on the track," explained Carmichael. "AMSOIL Arenacross is a sport on the rise and I'm excited to see how 2016 plays out with young talent like Austin Forkner stepping up into the program and guys like Regal and Hayes battling it out all the way to the finals in Las Vegas!" From top to bottom there are scores to be settled throughout AMSOIL Arenacross, setting the stage for an even more memorable 2016 season amongst a field of incredibly talented and gifted athletes. AMSOIL Arenacross is the most intense racing on the planet and it's evident every weekend throughout the season that these riders are prepared to win at all costs in search of one of the most coveted championships in the sport. REPORT Moto Armory museum spreads word of opening at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Reese Family Collecting, Restoring Vintage Off-Road Bikes Robert Reese pursued his passion for guns by taking over the Springfield Armory name and producing M14s, Springfield 1911s and M1 Garands, eventually turning over the highly prosperous Geneseo, Ill., business to his sons Dennis and Tom. “We’ve been very blessed,” Tom said. “The business has been very successful.”
Moto Armory sponsored the off-road portion of the 2015 AMA Vintage Grand Championship. The AMA Vintage Grand Championship takes place during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days and includes motocross, hare scrambles and trials -- as well as vintage road racing on Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course's road race course and vintage dirt track at the nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds. Accumulation of motorcycles for the Moto Armory museum began about six years ago, when Tom bought the Greg Primm collection of 275 motocross bikes after Primm’s Las Vegas museum closed its doors.
Now Tom is following his passion -- collecting, restoring and displaying vintage off-road motorcycles. And he hopes eventually to pass along that operation to his son, Tommy.
Since then, he has built the Moto Armory collection to more than 600 motorcycles, each meticulously restored.
Tom sold his half of the Springfield Armory business to his brother. And he started buying vintage off-road motorcycles. The goal is to open a 40,000-squarefoot museum in East Moline, Ill. -- Moto Armory Vintage Off-Road Motorcycle Museum -- where they will display some of the great bikes from days past. A soft opening is tentatively scheduled for January, and the museum will be open five or six days a week, Tom said.
Tom raced during the 1970s, with a group of riders that called themselves the Fast Boys of Illinois, competing in enduros and other races. “There were lots of really fast guys,” he said. “There was a rich assortment of competitions -- flat track, hill climbs. We were surrounded by it -- Peoria, Springfield, Du Quoin -- they were all right in our backyard.”
“This will be a big, complete, historically significant museum,” Tom said. “We want the people who stop by to just say, ‘Wow!’

A Monkey on the Side By Denise Kennedy, TRO Contributor Well another AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is in the books. As always lots of racing, vendors of all kinds, tons of vintage motorcycles - some untouched - some beautifully restored. At a Vintage event you can walk through the pit area. Many of the riders are eager to talk about their bikes and their experiences. This year I had the opportunity to talk to a monkey. No not the banana eating, tree climbing kind but a sidecar monkey. Why the term monkey? Well as explained to me it is because the sidecar passenger continually climbs side to side like a monkey to counterbalance the bike in the turns. Surprisingly many of the sidecar monkeys are women. Three of the teams competing at Vintage Days had women monkeys. This brings me to Evie Hunt. She and her husband Ryan of Kenosha WI are both Champions on two-wheeled vintage race bikes but also compete in the sidecar class. Evie made her debut as a sidecar monkey in 2014 at Mid-Ohio AMA Vintage Days finishing fourth. She has improved with experience; she finished second in Saturday's race. They had high hopes of improving on Sunday but unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate and track conditions were unsafe for the road course portion of the race schedule. Vintage rules do not permit rain tires so slick conditions can be very dangerous.
The Hunts run in the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) series and will run five tracks this year; Road America, Grattan, Toronto, MidOhio and Barber Motorsports Park. Their sidecar bike has a fabricated aluminum body powered by a Yamaha RD 400 motor and was the only two stroke running at Mid-Ohio. Average lap speed for a side car around the 2.4 mile course is in the 60-70 mph range. Traditionally women do not possess a lot of upper body strength and Ryan explained that Evie's exercise program
includes Zumba (flexibility) and P90 so she can hang off the sidecar in the turns. Besides the obvious dangers she mentioned that her shoulders sometimes take a beating. In the turns you try to get as low as possible. Sometimes pieces of curbing are missing and your natural
reaction as a monkey is to lower your shoulder meeting with heavy impact when it hits the remaining curbing. However the love of racing is apparent when you talk with Evie. She only wishes their budget would allow them to run more of the circuit. Evie and the other women monkeys; Celia Trosper and Linda Mihalec are a close knit group. They have a special kind of relationship; one of mutual admiration for each other and pride in their capabilities.
We wish all of them continued success and safe racing. Put AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days on your calendar for next year and watch the sidecar riders and monkeys put on a show. LEGISLATIVE REPORT Our legislators areon summer break, and most are in their home towns visiting fairs and festivals. It's a good time for face to face conversations with them while they are out and about. We have two bills currently in the process on the state level. HB 93 creates a pink ribbon breast cancer awareness license plate for motorcycles. This bill has passed through the Ohio House of Representatives and has been introduced in the Senate and has been assigned to committee. .HB 115 creates a state ran certification and training for road guarding. This bill has been introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives and has been referred to committee. .I mentioned HB 154 last month but I had misunderstood an email. At this point ABATE of Ohio is neutral on the bill. After reading the bill I learned that it was not what I originally believed. Get out and talk to our legislators. They like hearing from constituents and their concerns. Regards, Scott "Woody" Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, Motorcycle fatalities in the US have dropped for the last two years. Fatalities for 2014 in the US were 4,584 and in 2013 were 4,668. This is about a 1.8% drop. Now let’s look at Ohio - in 2013 we had 3768 crashes with 133 fatalities and in 2014 we had 3651 crashes with 140 fatalities. Yes we were up, and our vehicle registrations were up also, but our crashes were down. When you sit down and look at a lot of the figures, over all Motorcyclists are getting safer with our Education program and our Riders Training programs. Motorcycle Ohio does a one day class called the BRC2. You can get your endorsement in one day. If we keep putting “Look Twice and Save a Life” and “Look Out for Motorcycles” in front of all motorists, we will keep those numbers coming down. I cannot talk enough about construction zones. When you see orange barrels, slow down! Also watch the road surface because the ground is very unforgiving. After the roadway has been ground away in just one lane, there is a step up or down. Be very careful, check for signs that point out dangers, give cars and trucks plenty of space and never take exit ramps too fast. The construction workers are trying to keep us safe so if you see something that is not safe, stop and tell someone or call 911. We are about half way through the riding season. When is the last time you checked your bike over? It’s time to do a good check of your bike. Look at the ground for any fluids, look for shiny spots for unusual wear, check tire wear and air pressure, check the clutch and throttle adjustments and check all lights and their functions. Then give it a good wash and wax and keep your eyes open for anything loose or out of adjustment. I have been doing a lot of accident reviews and studies would like to say I found the answer to how to prevent them, but I have not. We need to be more aware of our surroundings. Scan further ahead and to the sides for any changes in traffic flow. We are getting more head-on accidents, left of center, both by bikes and by motorists. Think about what you would do if it was coming your way. If you were the biker, should you have looked ahead further and gave more time? If the motorist starts coming your way, where could you go? Play things out in your head. And then remember that most accidents can be fixed by slowing down and giving yourself more time. Please stay safe out there and I hope August is a lot drier than we’ve had. There are still a lot of great runs and parties to get to.

Fan or Follower We all want to be a part of something. Most of the time, before we actually join anything, we become a “fan” of that group because we do not fully understand what it means to be a part of that group. What this means is as we look in from the outside we have a desire to be a part of it; be identified with it; have what we see as the benefits by being a part of it; and having the prestige of being identified with it. In short, we tend to see all the good that we perceive is associated with being a part of the group. Most of the time our excitement overrides our ability to clearly see what is really involved in becoming a part of the group. “Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.” Matthew 4:18-22, NASB Here Jesus gave in invitation for these for men to “Follow Him” and their response was simple and straight forward. They simply got up and followed Jesus. They didn’t fully understand what it meant to follow Him, but they were obedient enough to just do it. “As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head,” And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:57-60, NASB 20
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Here the first individual is a classical “fan." He undoubtedly likes what he perceives all the benefits Jesus’ followers are enjoying. But Jesus makes him see the real cost; Jesus is homeless and is not guaranteed to have shelter at the next rain storm or at night fall. I think you will discover this individual is never mentioned again. The second individual seems all pumped up and ready to follow Jesus, but he puts a condition on his following. There is no real proof his father has actually died yet. It may very well be he’s telling Jesus that once my father dies, then I’ll come and follow you. Jesus makes it clear: He will not accept any conditions to becoming His follower. Jesus gives us all the same invitation, “Follow Me.” Will you respond as the two men in Luke 9? Or, will you respond like the four men in Matthew 4, and just get up, give up, and follow Him. Don’t be a “Fan” become a real “Follower” of Jesus.

This year marked the 15th Anniversary of Ohio Bike Week and event organizers pulled out all the stops in order to ensure that it was one of the best ever. Over the years, Ohio Bike Week has grown into one of the largest motorcycle events in the country and this year’s goal was no less than 200,000 attendees. With record crowds reported Thursday and Saturday, it appears as though they achieved this with room to spare. This year also marked the return of Ohio Bike Week to the Erie County Fairgrounds, after an absence of several years. The World Famous Broken Spoke Saloon set up shop in the main building and hosted the official OBW Campground on the grounds. A solid lineup of entertainment and the American Motor Drome Company’s WALL OF DEATH kept things fired up for those at the Fairgrounds. Progressive Insurance stepped up huge this year and really played a part in the festivities. In addition to being a presenting sponsor and helping to make the entire thing possible – Progressive introduced some new components which were pretty cool! Flo’s Chop Shop was set up on Columbus Avenue downtown and offered free beard trims and styling, manicures, and other services to riders in a cool, comfortable setting. Progressive also sponsored free, 24 hour, secured covered parking in the midst of the downtown rally. They even hosted a free breakfast there for riders! (Cont'd P.24)

TERRIBLE T’S OBW ROCK REPORT Wow, Ohio bike week came and went, but I'm sure the rides, tattoos, concerts, and hangovers had a lasting effect on us all. The Broken Spoke Saloon took back the fairgrounds this year and they did not disappoint when it came to the tunes. The party really got started on Wednesday with a band line up of Shallow Side, Madison Rising, and headlining Saving Abel. Saving Abel, a band from Mississippi puts southern pride into their music and it's was definitely heard bursting through the fairgrounds. The band paid tribute to our troops with their song 18 days. The boys also hung out with fans after the show and even stayed to take pictures. Buckcherry was the main even on Saturday night, closing out Ohio bike week with singer Josh Todd taking his shirt off mid performance and exposing his tattoos, turning the females in the crowd into a pit of poisonous snakes. Girls really went crazy, but that's what rock n roll is all about. Buckcherry left the stage and left the crowd wanting more. What ever your taste in music is - Ohio Bike Week had something for you! From Jackyl lighting up the chainsaw on stage to The living Deads and their stand up bass – OBW had it all covered. There were so many bands – you couldn’t possibly catch every show. I tried, but not a chance. I would definitely recommend getting a VIP pass. The pass gives you the chance to catch your bands on the barricade and there is no party like a front row party. The VIP pass also includes VIP bathrooms and a VIP bar. So, you can get up front and personal – or sit back and chill, whatever you feel like. Bring it on Ohio Bike Week 2016 – I’m looking forward to it already! -

(From P.22) Thunder Roads Ohio has been an active part of Ohio Bike Week since our launch 5 years ago, and this year was no exception. TRO hosted a Thunder Zone at the Sandusky State Theatre that featured internationally acclaimed artist David Uhl, the Iron & Ink Tattoo Zone, and a variety of vendors including the AFFLICTION Corporate Store. Sponsored by Indian of Toledo, the Thunder Zone included the Backstage Cantina and an indoor bar – allowing folks to enjoy some air conditioning and relax a little. Out on the pier, Thunder Roads Ohio joined American Heritage Motorcycles and other popular veteran vendors such as Dan’s Deli in front of the Barrel House Saloon. We had our new event trailer set up and checked in hundreds of riders for the Buckeye Thunder Run. Throughout the block party we were the first to open on the pier and one of the last to close. Made for some long days, but it was a blast catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. On Thursday, TRO hosted the Annual Ohio Bike Week Bikini and Calendar Girl Contest at the Comfort Inn. This Bike Week Pool Party draws hundreds every year and is always standing room only hours before it officially begins. This year the hotel expanded the deck and brought in an outside stage, and still the area was jam packed – with people climbing the fence and hanging from windows to catch a glimpse. American Heritage Motorcycles sponsored the contest and had bikes on display out front. With their support, TRO offered more prize money than ever before. The bikini competition was tough but fun, as the girls danced around the pool and had fun with those in attendance. There was even a hoola-hoop segment, that drew howls from the crowd. In the end, the over-all winner was Kaecee from Columbus, with Sarah and Darcy the other finalists. The guys had a chance to cool off with a cannonball challenge that had a record number of participants as well. The winner took $100 cash for taking the plunge! The Thunder Roads Ohio crew literally took thousands of photos throughout the week, and we will continue to share them

An IMBBA Judged Show This year Ohio Bike Week moved its bike show to an indoor location at the fairgrounds, directly across from the Broken Spoke Saloon. Once again, the Ohio Bike Week Show was sanctioned and judged by the International Master Bike Builders Association (IMBBA). Participation was up from last year with 46 custom bikes all coming from different parts of Ohio, other states, and Canada. The competition was strong as the bikes were of higher quality and many featured a strong attention to detail. Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine, Derek Smith, was on hand with additional prizes and served as a sponsor of the Bike Show. IMBBA judges were Ron Radeke, Jeff Starke and Roy Mathes, along with several IMBBA “Associate” Judges, who were in training to become IMBBA judges. Thanks to them for their assistance in making this show a stellar one. After the results were announced, builders and owners were able to talk with the judges and discuss their scores. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive as participants appreciated the objective evaluation of their builds. Best of Show went to Neil Perkins for his 2003 HD 883 Custom. PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works
State and Stop Prizes
E
ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home.
The Winners
I
f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn't able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead.
Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! 28
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
E
very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
• Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's. • Some prize drawings are specific to only checkin's for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long. • ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in's per month (not counting bonuses).
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
BONUS Check-in´s! The 2015 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It's really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website!
Y
ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. We have all new cards for 2015. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there.
Just Get Out and RIDE!
W
e want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

EASYRIDERS 201 Few events have the old school biker tradition or national recognition that the Chillicothe Easyriders Rodeo boasts. A blend of field games, motorcycle drags, live entertainment, and old school craziness – it’s something that really needs to be experienced to fully appreciate. Known simply as “Chilli” to bikers nationwide, far too many Ohioans simply take this biker institution for granted because it happens to be in our backyard. If you’ve never been – come on out and join the fun; if you’re a Chilli Veteran – you’ll find us at our regular spot on the Midway. Either way, you’re in for a great time at THE RODEO! This year, our Easyriders friends have kicked things up a notch at Chillicothe with national recording artists each night – including: Drowning Pool, Colt Ford, and Kentucky Headhunters. This amped up line-up is part of a commitment by show organizers to build on this biker institution. A renewed focus is being placed on custom bike builders and expanding some of the core areas – such as the tattoo gallery. This is an Easyriders event – so of course, custom bike builds are the norm and there’s a bike show with world class bikes on exhibit. It’s worth noting, though, that this is not
40
the indoor invitational. This is a ride-in bike show, showcasing rolling works of art that are often times ridden all weekend throughout the fairgrounds. If you spend far more time riding your bike than polishing it, but you still take pride in her – this is the bike show for you! A little dust on the chrome is more than acceptable and the judges are expecting you to have a little grease on your hands as they congratulate you. It’s important to understand that this is a weekend rally, and while there are a number of local rides and you can venture out – most of the activities are all right here at the fairgrounds. Folks come in and get set up for the weekend – and then it’s time to kick back and enjoy the festivities. You can come by just for the day and check out the rodeo games in the stadium, cruise the vendor area, and enjoy the main stage entertainment. However, you will only taste a portion of Chilli and be left wondering what it’s like to camp for the weekend and get the full CHILLI EXPERIENCE. For more information on the event, including tattoo artist and vendor applications – visit www.easyridersevents.com.

Brando’s Harley Sells For $256,000 By T.J. Hinton, TopSpeed.com The late Marlon Brando didn’t just portray and influence the biker lifestyle in The Wild One, he actually was an avid motorcycle enthusiast in his personal life long before the 1953 hit movie. One of his rides just fetched over a quarter-million dollars at a Julien’s Hollywood Legends auction. The 1970 Harley-Davidson FLH ElectraGlide, with black sheet metal and “gangster whitewall” tires, had only 13,859 miles on the odometer when it was purchased by a lucky, and apparently well-heeled, enthusiast for a staggering $256,000. Mr. Brando bought this sled on April 8, 1970, and was the original owner, leaving it pretty much stock and keeping it in very good condition. The engine is what the old boys called a “Shovel-Pan.” It had the Shovelhead top end with the old Panhead bottom end, evidenced by the peanut-hull shaped gearcase cover on the right side that accommodated the generator drive gear that ran off the cam gear, as opposed to the nosecone-style cover used on the later Shovelheads that replaced the generator with an internal alternator housed within the primary-drive cover. This detail adds a bit of rarity to the bike, in addition to the star power bestowed upon it by its original owner, especially since the 1970 FLH model is listed as having the nosecone/alternator setup. This makes me believe that either this is not the original engine, or perhaps it is actually a 1969 ½ (maybe?) sold as a 1970 model. Whatever the case, the new owner must be tickled pink to score such an interesting and iconic sled. I only hope that said owner actually rides it (carefully) and doesn’t relegate it to a museum display. There was a time when AlfaRomeo and Harley-Davidson were the only two vehicles that actually appreciated in value when they were bought; everything else depreciated in value the instant you drove it off the dealer’s lot. Granted, this was mainly because of the much-maligned “waiting list” used by Harley dealerships in the 1990s, but the end result was the same, a Harley in hand was worth more than one in the bush, as it were. Having said that, the price on this ride far surpasses this artificial price boost, and shows the lengths collectors will go to in order to own their own little slice of history. I wonder if the “Brando” tag came with it. For motorcycle reviews and news, visit our friends at www.TopSpeed.com/ motorcycles

We caught up with Scooter “Trash” Sandoval, a 6 year old Chihuahua and his chauffer, Adam Sandoval at Tri-County Harley Davidson on Bike Night as they continued on their quest to make it to all 696 Harley Davidson Dealerships. Scooter and Adam are traveling to all HD dealerships in the lower 48 states to raise money for the American Legion Legacy Vets Scholarships for children with a parent who has died in combat. All the money raised goes to the fund. None of the donation money is used to pay for their ride or housing. They often camp sleeping next to the bike. When we spoke with Scooter and Adam at Tri-County Harley Davidson, they had been to 232 Dealerships so far. He had been to 4 in the last 24 hours including Thoroughbred and Eastgate Harley-Davidson. Adam shared the story of being woken by the Union Township Police as he and Scooter slept outside of Eastgate HD. When the officer heard about their mission, all was well. At Tri-County Harley Davidson, donations were collected in a gas tank. Those donating were able to sign the tank to show their support for the cause. It was our pleasure to sign the gas tank and make a donation to the cause. In addition to donations raised from Bike Night attendees, The Tri-County Hog Chapter made a separate donation of $759.
contributions. Round 7 included most of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Indiana. The total raised after round 7 totals $84,662. MOTORCYCLE 101 The History of Motorcycles
War Machines
The importance of the motorcycle in The Great War is often overlooked, although the motorcycle was one of the most prolific tools in the Allied arsenal. Messengers on horseback were replaced by riders on motorcycles, and quickly became the most reliable source of communication in battle. Communications technology was highly unreliable during WWI, and based on the virtue of speed alone, motorcycles became the best way for the military to transfer orders, reports, and maps between units.
Now, I know what you’re thinking…Riding is dangerous enough on any given day, so who the hell wants to do it in the middle of full blown combat? I have to admit, at first thought the motorcycle seems like an unlikely choice for combat equipment. It lacks armor, leaving the operator totally exposed and it can be quite easily damaged. But sometimes what is needed in battle is speed and agility…and the nimble motorcycle was irreplaceable on the battlefield. Imagine the kahones on those guys (or maybe they were just nuts in general), but whatever the reasoning behind the action, riding through shot and shell to secure victory is pretty damn impressive to me. Motorcycles were used for more than just messaging in WWI. The versatility of these machines clearly helped them play a hugely significant role in the logistics of war…even more so than cars. In addition to dispatch and courier duties they were used for reconnaissance and patrol, as ammunition and medical supply carriers, and for casualty evacuation. They also modified motorcycles to act as field ambulances, as well as mounting machine guns to sidecars for combat. When the US entered WWI, we brought motorcycles from several US companies to help on the front lines. The bulk of motorcycles came from Indian and Harley Davidson, but motorcycles produced by Excelsior, Henderson, and others also made it into battle in Europe. So what does all of this do to the motorcycle industry? Let’s take a look at three key players from the start of the production era, and where they end up at the end of WWI.
During the war, Indian Motorcycles were continuing to grow. By 1914, Indian had over 3,000 employees working on a seven mile long assembly line in its Springfield, Massachusetts plant. This same year, Indian debuts the world’s first motorcycle with electric lights and starter. By 1916, Indian has also introduced the 61 cubic inch Powerplus side valve engine. In 1918, Indian improves upon this by introducing the overhead cam, 4 valve per cylinder Powerplus model. By the end of the war, Indian had supported the war effort with an incredible 41,000 machines. Despite its strong connection to Germany, Triumph takes its place in WWI history on the Allied side. How’s that for an uncomfortable partnership? In 1914, Triumph was chosen by Colonel Claude Holbrook to supply the Type H motorcycle for Allied military service. The Type H was the first motorcycle produced by Triumph without pedals, the first “true motorcycle” for the company. The Type H originally had a belt driven rear wheel and a 499 cc air cooled 4 stroke single cylinder engine. The revamped model H, in particular, was regarded by many as having been the first “modern motorcycle” introduced in 1915; it had a 550 cc side valve 4 stroke engine with a 3 speed gear box and belt transmission. It was so popular that it gained the nickname “Trusty Triumph”. Triumph would eventually contribute 30,000 motorcycles to the military over the course of WWI. The versatility of motorcycles clearly helped them to play a significant role in the logistics of WWI…even more so than cars. Motorcycles were integral in the success of the Allied troops, and turned a relatively new and underdeveloped industry into a world-wide phenomenon. Next time we will take a look at post war motorcycle history, and how the Great Depression turned motorcycle production into a sink or swim industry. Melanie Schwarte Melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com
Harley Davison introduced the first side car in 1914, followed by a brief return to the use of chain versus belt driven motorcycles to help combat the problems associated with using leather belts. (The slippage, stretching, and rotting of leather belts was unacceptable to the manufacturer.) Some of these models were briefly available with a two speed transmission in the rear hub. In 1915, Harley introduced the three speed sliding gear transmission with the final and primary drive on the same side. By 1917, one third of Harley Davidson production is purchased by the US Army. 1917 also brought about the creation of Harley’s Quartermaster School, designed to train Army mechanics, the school was retained after the war as the Service School; providing factory trained mechanics for Harley Davidson dealerships. By 1918 almost half of all Harley Davidson motorcycles are sold for use by the US military, with a total of 20,000 motorcycles produced for the troops in WWI. After Armistice was signed, Corporal Roy Holtz became the first American soldier to enter Germany, and he did so, on a Harley. 62

IMBBA HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2015
Broken Spoke Campground, Sturgis. The International Master Bike Builders Association (IMBBA) will be celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year and where better to party and host the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony than in Sturgis, during the 75th Anniversary Celebration!
2015 Class:
Billy Lane, USA Roger Goldammer, Canada Steve “ BrewDude” Garn, USA Fabrizio “Sugar” Favre, Italy
"This “Lifetime Achievement Award” is a big deal, in that IMBBA goes to great lengths in qualifying through a points system rather than the good old boys network to determine those industry professionals who have arrived and achieved” said Jeff Starke, IMBBA president and founder.
The Celebration will be held at the Broken Spoke Saloon Campground in Sturgis, SD during the Sturgis 75th Anniversary Rally. AUGUST 8, 2015 From 4 to 8 p.m. The second floor of The Broken Spoke Saloon will be reserved for drinks and dinner and the ceremony will be on stage. “IMBBA has selected the DAN LAWSON BAND to play and entertain, a long standing admiration of talent and artistry of the music industry performed by Dan Lawson was needed to top the cake in this IMBBA celebration and honor to individuals so deserving the recognition joining the ranks of those that come before them”, said IMBBA President and Founder, Jeff Starke. IMBBA certified Master Bike Builders/ industry celebrities will be present to welcome those inducted into the IMBBA.
The IMBBA Hall of FAME has inducted only 34 individuals in a ten year time frame. The same system that verifies builder’s knowledge, proficiency, and skills sets that lead to an IMBBA Certification.
Among the group IMBBA Board of Directors, Mondo Porras - Denver’s Choppers, Steven Broyles Stevenson Cycle, Jay Allen Broken Spoke Saloon. Lee Wimmer, Wimmer Machine, Ron Radake - Power
The IMBBA Hall of Fame will be inducting the builders who have exemplified the global standards in their work, given back to the industry through contributions in products, designs education or training, charity, sponsorships, personal appearances and provided the industry with a 20+ year service. This year’s inductees are Billy Lane, Roger Goldammer, Fabrizio Favre, and Steve “Brew Dude” Garn.

JUDGES TIPS Fit, Form, Function, and Safety
The International Master Bike Builders Association
Many have heard the IMBBA judges say, Fit, Form, Function and Safety. These are the fundamental keys to a successful build, restoration, or customization. One cannot disregard any of these four elements and receive a worthy score. IMBBA uses this global standard by which to measure the competency of the builder when matched to that of the builder’s education and skills that goes into a finished product.
The IMBBA was founded in 2005 by Jeff Starke, custom bike builder and former chief technical advisor and lead judge for the World Famous Rat’s Hole Chopper Show until the show’s owner, “Big Daddy Rat” Karl Smith died during Daytona Bike Week 2002. The IMBBA has established an objective system to evaluate and recognize the craftsmanship and skills, knowledge and talent employed in quality bike restoration, rebuilding, and radical from-the-ground-up customization of bikes worldwide. This system has helped to develop professional standards within the industry itself, well beyond them bike shows that utilize it.
Here’s how it works and is a great tip that when used, heralds a better motorcycle.
The IMBBA currently has certified members in 10 countries and a growing number of IMBBA judges capable of judging bike shows around the world, using the standardized point system. Member-representatives have been helping to spread the IMBBA story since 2005, and continue to help other tradesmen become certified. The IMBBA point system is aimed at globally strengthening the industry by rewarding performance and accomplishment, and ultimately by rewarding charitable giving within the industry.
If every attribute that makes up a motorcycle, before saying it’s finished, you step back and examine the component(s), attribute and or finished product and ask, doing this and installing the component, does it Fit, properly? Follow the Form and intent? And does it function as needed and intended? And lastly is it safe? If you can answer yes! You’re bound to receive a good scoring. It is the sum of all attributes that go into a motorcycle separately, as well as, the whole product that determine a well scored bike in a global arena of competitions.
For more information on the IMBBA, visit their website at www.IMBBA.com
Simply put, you use the IMBBA global standards and you will improve and provide a better product to your customers and unto yourself.

Friend or Brother? It would seem a simple concept wouldn’t it? I mean you share the road, parties, clubhouse, work, meals, and even the occasional bunkhouse with your club brothers, but are they your friends? I wrote an article a few years ago that said “Don’t Bro Me If You Don’t Know Me”, but do you know your “Brothers”? I’ve invested much time in my club life, years in fact. It’s been an evolution that has brought me to where I am today. I’ve been side by side with some great Brothers, and largest Nations in the world, only to later discover that many really weren’t my friend at all. How is this, you might ask? I wonder, you have a group, large or small, of people who dress exactly the same as you do, but how well do you even know them? Chances are, depending on the size of your club, you don’t know most of them at all. Of course spending that time together is how friendships are forged. What about the ones in your own chapter? Do you even know them outside of your patch? How many of them have invited you to their home, or vice versa, just to kick it on the deck over a burger on the grill with a case of brew? My guess is very few. Hell, I’m guilty as charged. I spend an enormous amount of my time with my club, and that doesn’t leave a lot of time for my friends. People know this about me, but I have also forged lifetime friendships with some who never did, or no longer fly my patch. Many weren’t friends before the club life, but they are now, and will remain so. I think some people have never known real friendship in their lives, nor have been a real friend to anyone. 70
Perhaps it’s the motivation as to why some people join a club, to find friends. Then there are those Bikers you pass on the highway that wave at you. Why is that? Respect? Admiration for a shared passion? Odd., I like to Pier Fish in Florida, but I don’t wave at the other fishermen as I walk out
“Don’t Bro Me If You Don’t Know Me”, on the pier to pick my fishing spot. You know who else waves? Boaters. Are boaters the same as Bikers? Nah, I think it’s just that shared hobby thing. Do your Club Brothers throw everyone under the bus who leaves your club? I mean they went from “Brother” to a nobody in the 10 minute time span it took for them to turn in their rag? What do you think those same “Brothers” will say and do to you if you have a life change and decide you need to step out? Think
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

about that as you currently sit in the “still loved” category amongst your crew. Who will be there after you are gone? Who will check in with your family if you go down? Those are your friends. Too many clubbers just drink the Kool-aide the club life feeds them, and passionately assume that they are among “Friends”. Take it from my past first hand experience, they are not. Kind of depressing, isn’t it? Well take solace in knowing that there are Real Friendships to be forged, and plenty of good times ahead in your club life. Just be considerate of those you count as a friend. Some of them are only grasping at your patch because they have no real friends, or they only care what you will provide for them, as they provide little or nothing in return. Being in a club is about a group of people, giving and taking. Just be certain there is more being given than the latter, or there will be nothing left. The way it often works out is the “Brothers” that appear or talk so much to “be about it”, are most often OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
the ones who walk away, never to be heard from again. So are you a Friend or are you a Brother? Choose wisely, because one of those choices comes with a commitment. Thanks for Reading! My Road Name is “Tabasco”, and I approve this message! Keep it REAL!

BUCKEYE FIREARMS By Linda Walker REPORT Camp Perry & NRA to host U.S. Fullbore Nationals and World Long Range Championships Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio has been fortunate to host the CMP/NRA National Matches since 1907. This year brings yet another exciting event to Camp Perry when it hosts the U.S. Fullbore Nationals and World Long Range Championships for the first time, August 8-14. The United States only has the opportunity to host the Palma Rifle Long Range Championships once every 25 years. The NRA chose Camp Perry to be the site because the range is capable of shooting up to 1000 yards.
According to Sheri Judd, Manager, High Power Rifle Dept.,NRA Competitive Shooting Division, “We have registered 11 international countries to include the United States Palma Team that will vie for the Palma Team Trophy which is one of the most prestigious trophies in international marksmanship competition. Those countries coming to compete against the U.S. Palma Team are Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Great Britain, West Indies, Channel Islands, Republic of South Africa and Kenya. They are bringing their Veterans Teams which to us would seem like military teams, however in international competition are actually our Senior/Grand
Senior Teams here in the U.S. They will also be bringing their Under 21/Under 25 Teams similar to our Junior Teams. Several of the countries will be arriving early enough that they will be participating in the NRA Long Range Matches to get acclimated to the range, time zone and climate before competing in the international phases. This will be a welcome addition for the U.S. shooters to the NRA National Matches.” The U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will be jumping for the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, August 8 beginning at 8:00 AM which will also include the flag raising

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT REPORT: 1 in 20 Adults Have A Concealed Carry Permit In The US, And They’re Extremely Law-Abiding Carry Permit In The US, And They’re Extremely Law-Abiding ConcealedNation.Org A report issued by the Crime Prevention Research Center on concealed carry sheds light on how popular the practice is becoming. The 27-page report was compiled by Dr. John Lott, and stresses that the true numbers of adults that have concealed carry permits does not represent the total number of adults that can carry, as the country has seven states that do not require permits to carry concealed.
In 2007, the estimated number of concealed carry permits across the US was 4.6 million. Fast forward to 2015, and the new estimate soars to 12.8 million. With these numbers, we can conclude that roughly 5.2% of the adult population has their concealed carry permit. Murder And Violent Crime Rates Down While Concealed Carry Up Also encouraging is the correlation between a drop in murder rates and violent crime, and the continued rise of issued concealed carry permits. Between 2007 and 2014, murder rates have
fallen from 5.6 to 4.2 (preliminary estimates) per 100,000. This represents a 25% drop in the murder rate at the same time that the percentage of the adult population with permits soared by 178%. Overall violent crime also fell by 25 percent over that period of time.
In Summary • Since President Obama’s election the number of concealed handgun permits has soared, growing from 4.6 million in 2007 to over 12.8 million this year. Among the findings in our report: The number of concealed handgun permits is increasing at an ever- increasing rate. Over the past year, 1.7 million additional new permits have been issued – a 15.4% increase in just one single year. This is the largest ever single-year increase in the number of concealed handgun permits. • 5.2% of the total adult population has a permit. • Five states now have more than 10% of their adult population with concealed handgun permits. • In ten states, a permit is no longer required to carry in all or virtually all of the state. This is a major reason why legal carrying handguns is growing so much faster than the number of permits. • Since 2007, permits for women has increased by 270% and for men by 156%. • Some evidence suggests that permit holding by minorities is increasing more than twice as fast as for whites. • Between 2007 and 2014, murder rates have fallen from 5.6 to 4.2 (preliminary estimates) per 100,000. This represents a 25% drop in the murder rate at the same time that the percentage of the adult population with permits soared by 156%. Overall violent crime also fell by 25 percent over that period of time. • States with the largest increase in permits have seen the largest relative drops in murder rates.

• Concealed handgun permit holders are extremely law-abiding. In Florida and Texas, permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors or felonies at one-sixth the rate that police officers are convicted.

Cheesy Ratatouille Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) This is a twist on a very classic dish and PERFECT for summer since the stores and roadside stands are FULL of fresh veggies! 2 zucchini 2 yellow squash 1 lg firm tomato 2 thin Japanese eggplant (or 1 medium regular one) – optional 1 lg bell pepper - optional 1 tbsp oil 1 large onion, diced 2 tbsp garlic, minced 2 tbsp basil 1 tsp oregano 1 lb ground Italian sausage 1 cups of your favorite spaghetti sauce 2 cup Italian bread crumbs ½ cup parmesan cheese 1 ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, etc) • Prepare your zucchini, squash and tomato by slicing them into little discs about ¼-1/2 inch thick and set aside. • **If using eggplant - place slices into a colander and liberally sprinkle salt all over them. This helps draw out the moisture that can often make eggplant bitter. Fortunately the Japanese species is very mild. Allow them to sit in the salt for about 20 minutes then rinse with clean water VERY well. You don’t want all that salt in your dish. • Heat the oil over medium in a frying pan, then add in the onions and cook until slightly soft. • Add in the garlic and sausage then to cook until browned. • Drain off any grease and add mix to your spaghetti sauce, stir well. • In a casserole dish spread 1/2 cup spaghetti sauce across the bottom then 1 cup of bread crumbs over it. (This will help absorb all the liquid the veggies will put off). • Toss your sliced veggies in the remaining cup of bread crumbs so they stick, then arrange your lightly breaded veggies in whatever style you like, I tend to stack them on their sides, then lean them over like poker chips. (Looks pretty fancy! ;-) • Pour the remaining spaghetti sauce over everything, cover with foil and place into a 350 degree oven and bake for 30 minutes. • Remove from oven, and sprinkle the cheeses over the top and return to the oven Uncovered for another 20 minutes. • Serve with crunch Italian bread! Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
Honesty A guy goes in for a job interview and sits down with the boss. The boss asks him, "What do you think is your worst quality?" The man says "I'm probably too honest." The boss says, "That's not a bad thing, I think being honest is a good quality." The man replies, "I don't give a sh*t what you think!" The Plane As an airplane is about to crash, a female passenger jumps up frantically and announces, "If I'm going to die, I want to die feeling like a woman." She removes all her clothing and asks, "Is there someone on this plane who is man enough to make me feel like a woman?" A man stands up, removes his shirt and says, "Here, iron this!"

Women and Beer
The Juggler
Yesterday, government scientists suggested that men should take a look at their beer consumption, considering the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. The theory is that drinking beer makes men turn into women. To test the finding, 100 men were fed 6 pints of beer each. It was then observed that 100% of the men gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became overly emotional, couldn't drive, failed to think rationally, argued over nothing, and refused to apologize when wrong. No further testing is planned.
A man is driving home, when is pulled over by a patrolman for a broken blinker. The cop looks into the guys' car and sees a collection of knives in the backseat. "Sir," the cop says. "Why do you have all those knives?"
The Call A blonde and brunette are having tea when suddenly the phone rings. The blonde picks it up and immediantely starts crying. Her brunette friend asks her, "Why are you crying dear?" Blonde says, "Because my mom just called and said that my father just died. "I'm so sorry," says the brunette. The blonde finally stops crying, when the phone rings again. She picks it up and starts crying again. The brunette asks again whats wrong, to which the blonde replies, "My brother just called and said that his father died too."

"They're for my juggling act," the man says. "I don't believe you," says the cop. "Prove it." So the man gets out of his car and begins juggling the knives. At the same time, a couple of old bikers go by. Later on when they get their favorite hangout, one biker says to the other, "I'm glad I quit drinking. These new sobriety tests are hard." The Lien A young man walked into our insurance office to purchase coverage for his new motorcycle. Only one question confused him so he asked, "What is this...Do you have a lien holder on the vehicle?" "I've got a kickstand, so I don't need someone to hold it when it leans!
