FROM THE PUBLISHER In the Road Tales section this month, I discuss our friend Bean’re’s new book – “Bean’re Rambles the Orient”. If you’re not familiar with Bean’re, you have most likely NOT attended Ohio Bike Week – Sturgis – or just about any other major motorcycle rally in America over the last several years. He’s a self proclaimed “Motorcycle Nomad” and “Professional Tourist”. He basically just travels around the country (and now Asia) on his motorcycle. He’s a great guy and many are envious of his life. I frequently hear, “Oh, I wish I could just get away like that.” Or even more amusing, “I wish I had his job!”. The thing is that Bean’re has made his life and his “job” all about the ride and lifestyle that we love. He goes from motorcycle event to motorcycle event – going as his interest and sometimes his sponsors take him. It’s a cool life, but it’s not really an all or nothing proposition. The appeal of Bean’re’s story is that he is simply enjoying life. He’s jumping on his bike and hitting the road whenever you wants to. That sounds incredible to many and oh so tempting, but it also sounds impossible to most of us. How could we simply spend our lives traveling? The reality, though, is that we could all jump on the bike and ride. It’s simply a matter of what sacrifices are we willing to make for that freedom. Are we willing to give up the security and luxury that our traditional jobs afford us? And of course, many of us have others that depend upon us as well. The reality, though, is that we all have the power to make the most out of our lives. It’s not that we are chained down and prevented from hitting the road, it’s that we have limited ourselves. There’s nothing to say that a “motorcycle adventure” has to take 4 months or even weeks to experience. You can have the experience of a lifetime riding to a rally this weekend or even simply a bike night this evening. If you’re reading this magazine, chances are that you have your very own passport to freedom sitting in the driveway or garage – your bike. It’s sitting right there and you can escape anytime you’d like, even if it’s just for a ride around the block. This magazine contains hundreds of motorcycle events and ride destinations for you to consider. Anyone of which can be the source of great stories, incredible experiences, and new friends. You don’t have to ride through Vietnam (although that does sound cool). You can head to Mid-Ohio for Vintage Motorcycle Days, the Villa for Bike Night, or Wetzelland for a weekend of craziness! It’s all up to you. I’d also urge you to consider taking someone along for the ride. If you’re hitting the road, it’s often more fun when you have someone to share the experiences with. Take the kids to a motocross race or the entire family to a bike show. Hit the road with an organized ride, riding club, or owner’s group. There are countless options, and you’ll most likely have more fun riding with other kindred spirits. The open road lies before us, let's make the most of it.

INDIAN RETURNS TO AMA PRO FLAT TRACK in 2009, AMA Grand National Singles Championship in 2012, and the unified AMA Grand National Championship (GNC1) title in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

We knew it was only a matter of time before Indian Motorcycle turned its focus to competitive racing. Since first taking over the reins of the Indian Motorcycle name and the history behind it, Polaris has certainly embraced the legacy and tradition that went with it. They’ve also paid homage to the tradition with the traditional model names – the Chieftain, Roadmaster, Scout, and recently the Springfield. They’ve also not been shy about openly challenging H-D. Now, though, they have taken the next step and have committed to going head to head with Harley on the track. On June 14th, Indian announced - Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, is proud to announce its re-entry into the AMA Pro Flat Track series with its first fullfactory racing effort since the 1950s.

“We are very excited to return to the AMA Circuit,” says Steve Menneto, President of Motorcycles for Polaris Industries. “We have established the new Indian Chief and Scout series as the cornerstones of our production line-up, and now is the time for us to return to racing in a big way. We know that fans of Indian Motorcycle have been anticipating this announcement and can’t wait to see Indian Racing back in action.” “Indian Motorcycle was born out of competition, and through its history used racing to develop and improve the product as well as expand the appeal of the brand,” says Reid Wilson, Marketing Director for Indian Motorcycle. “As shepherds for the brand, we will continue that push towards excellence on

the street and in competition, and our team is beyond excited to bring the brand back to professional racing.” “I can’t express how excited I am to be the guy to bring Indian Motorcycle back into the forefront of AMA Pro competition,” says Mees. “We will have a lot of work to do to develop a 100 percent new race platform, but I’m committed and excited at what I have seen on the drawing boards and what the plans are for Indian Motorcycle Racing. This is history for the brand, and being a part of it is truly exciting for me and this sport.” The cornerstone of this racing effort is an entirely new 750cc Indian raceonly engine for flat track – the FTR750. This is an 88.0x61.5mm bore & stroke, four-valve DOHC liquid-cooled V-twin engine that is reported to generate 109 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. The engine is still in development, but it has been approved by AMA Pro Racing and is projected to be on the track as early as September.

AMA Pro Flat Track is highly competitive and has evolved into a demanding, technical and specialized event that typically sees bar-tobar action and sublime motorcycle control at high speeds on varied dirt surfaces. The Indian Motorcycle Racing Team will contest the series with an all new and proprietary liquidcooled 750cc four-valve V-Twin competition engine specifically designed for flat track and engineered into a specially built chassis. Indian Motorcycle has a significant history in flat track, at one time dominating the sport with legendary riders and motorcycles. Perhaps best-known was the Indian Motorcycle Wrecking Crew, consisting of Bill Tuman, Bobby Hill and Ernie Beckman, who won race after race and carried the message of power, balance and quality that lives on in today’s Indian® Scout®. Multi-time AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees will join the Indian Motorcycle Racing Team as a test rider in 2016. Mees, 30, won the AMA Grand National Twins Championship 8

BEAN’RE RAMBLES THE ORIENT

Our favorite ‘Professional Tourist on a Chopper’ pens another book. If you’ve been to Ohio Bike Week, the Easyriders Invitational in Columbus, Sturgis, Daytona, or just about any other major motorcycle event in North America – chances are that you may have come across Bean’re – the Mayor of Fun! He’s hard to miss, in his outrageous suits (Think Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny) and his signature top hat complete with rattlesnake head. Bean’re is the quintessential biker nomad, claiming no home and simply traveling across the country on his big purple chopper – from motorcycle rally to motorcycle rally. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet this unique soul, you’re missing out. But, as luck would have it – you now have the opportunity to get to know a little about Bean’re through his latest book Bean’re Rambles The Orient. This is Bean’re’s second book, and it has a slightly different feel than his first. In this book, he takes us along as he travels through Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Whereas the first book was more of a primer on who he is, this one follows a specific journey. Along the way we almost get a better appreciation and understanding of Bean’re’s life as he shares just about everything. Reading this book is akin to catching up with an old friend and listening to them share their favorite escapades. Bean’re takes us through the entire journey, from the initial idea to how he pulled it off. From wrangling with airport security and visa difficulties to checking into hotels and improvised repairs in small Vietnamese villages. He doesn’t pull any punches and shares just about every aspect of the trip. From his starting point in Ho Chi Mihn City, Bean’re literally rambles across seven countries during his four month trip.

How many of us are going to simply take off and ride through Vietnam and Laos for 15 weeks? Very few, I imagine. But after reading his book and seeing all that went into the trip – and how easy it really was for him to pull off – I know realize that the only thing standing in my way is myself. You read this story and listen to his anecdotes, and you are faced with the fact that we are all just so mired in our routines. Bean’re is simply living life and conquering one obstacle at a time. I’d really recommend checking out Bean’re’s new book – Bean’re Rambles the Orient. You can order it through www.EverythingBenre. com and he will even autograph it for you. As a matter of fact, while you’re there, you should also order his first book at the same time. Not only is that a great read as well, it also features one of my favorite David Uhl paintings on the cover – The Heist, which features Bean’re atop a vintage motorcycle trying to escape a posse! You can also find Kevin Bean’re on facebook, where you can easily follow his exploits and journey across America (and Asia).

I’ve had the chance to get to know Bean’re a little over the years, but I now feel as though I really know the guy after ‘riding along with him’ through this story. It’s really a fun book and gives you more insight into how he lives his life and his unique outlook on it.

REPORT There’s something for everyone at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days! It’s hard to imagine how they could possibly cram more into the annual celebration of riding known as AMA Vintage Days – but the event organizers have done just that this year, building in even more excitement and expanding the event in an effort to appeal to even MORE riders! It’s really a challenge to describe Vintage Days – but it’s far more than simply the swap meet that many (that have never attended) might picture it to be. Sure there’s a swap meet – the largest in North America – but there is so much more!

"Club members love going to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days every year. The bikes, people and atmosphere are like nothing else," said OMRL President Kent Klawon. "In addition to those of us who already compete on full-sized bikes on the main road course, we're thrilled to bring mini road racing to the upper paddock. Hopefully, we can encourage some new riders to join our ranks -- all while helping to raise funds for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame."

Pre-entry for the motocross, trials, hare scrambles, dirt track and vintage road racing will be available later in April at www.americanmotorcyclist.com. Pre-registration for the OMRL program on the upper paddock will be available soon at www.ohiominiroadracingleague.com. Riders are asked to pre-register online and complete their signup at the track. Detailed class descriptions and a mini road racing FAQ are provided on the OMRL website.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefits the nonprofit AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, located in Pickerington Ohio. The weekend includes North America's largest motorcycle swap meet sponsored by Federal Motorcycle Transport, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show presented by Old Bike Barn, the American Motor Drome Wall of Death, a classic motorcycle field meet, demo rides of current production bikes, seminars, live music, raffle bikes, a beer garden with the region's best craft beers, and displays of AMA clubs and custom bike builders. Beyond all of this – there is the constant roar of motorcycles as the event is literally surrounded by racing! Racers and fans of old motorcycles will have three days of action-packed racing at MidOhio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, July 8-10, during the American Motorcyclist Association's AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. The event will feature vintage and postvintage competition in hare scrambles, motocross, dirt-track, trials and road racing. "In many ways, vintage competition represents the best of the sport," said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. "It's all about fun, low-pressure racing, having good times and making memories on old motorcycles. It doesn't get any better than that and you'd be hard pressed to find as much vintage racing, in as many classes and disciplines, as what we have at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days." The motocross, trials, hare scrambles and vintage road racing events are part of the AMA Vintage Grand Championship, which crowns national champions in these disciplines, while the half-mile dirt track, at nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds, offers one round of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. An exciting new addition this year is mini road racing in the upper paddock. Operated by the AMA-chartered Ohio Mini Roadracing League, the program includes practice on Friday and two full days of racing on Saturday and Sunday. While the mini road racing is not part of the national championship program, the top riders in each class will be recognized based on the cumulative points earned during both days of competition. 10

REPORT Competitors take to the woods for vintage hare scrambles at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Riders of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the July 8 vintage and post-vintage hare scrambles during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the July 8-10 vintage motorcycle festival at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. International Six Days Enduro U.S. team member Mandi Mastin and her team of brother Cody Mastin, Paul and Matt Bucher, Asa Abel and Dave Chamberlain lay out the hare scrambles course and manage race operations. "We design the trail for all levels of riders," said Mastin, who has been running the event for six years. "We keep it rideable and enjoyable for beginner or novice racers, along with keeping it fun for the expert racers. We understand that some of the people who come to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days only race this one event all year long." Mastin says her team starts going to MidOhio Sports Car Course about six weeks before the event to begin preparing nearly 2.5 miles of trail and scouting new routes in the wooded area of the 330-acre complex. "We usually have seven to 10 days into cleaning up the old trails and laying out the full course," Mastin said. "Each year, we try and make some changes from the previous year's course to keep it fun for those who race this event every year." Many racers also get their first taste of competition at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. The accessibility of the event, as well as the laid-back atmosphere of vintage racing, make it an excellent option for new racers. Last year, AMA Associate Editor Heather Wilson raced for the first time there. She shares her experience in the hare scrambles at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in the below video. "For me, the racing can be challenging, and it can be fun, but it's really more about the relationships and the people that you meet along the way," Wilson said. "I hope that more people will jump into riding and racing and give it a try. There's something for almost everyone."

REPORT Suzuki Motor of America sponsors history of AMA Superbike display at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days of America, Inc. "Many fans think sportbike PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Suzuki motorcycles have a long and rich history in AMA Superbike competition. This summer at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 8-10 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, that history will be on full display as part of Celebrating 40 Years of AMA Superbikes, presented by Suzuki Motor of America Inc. Suzuki's support is even more fitting because Wes Cooley, 2016 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Grand Marshal, rode a Suzuki GS1000 to his first AMA Superbike Championship in 1979. In 1980, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer successfully defended that title for Suzuki in one of the most thrilling AMA Superbike seasons ever. "Not only did Wes Cooley win in exciting fashion, but he was a pioneer in a racing style that captivated fans and, at the same time time, helped AMA Superbike become the premier discipline in motorcycle road racing," said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. "And you can't discuss Wes Cooley and his contributions without bringing up the role of Suzuki and the GS1000. It's only fitting that Suzuki Motor of America Inc. is supporting the Celebrating 40 Years of AMA Superbikes display at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days." In addition to Cooley's 1980 championship bike, the Yoshimura Suzuki GS1000 owned by collector Brian O'Shea, and the bike he rode in the 1982 campaign, the Yoshimura Suzuki Katana owned by collector Ken Edgar, the display will include signage honoring Cooley's career as well as other key moments in AMA Superbike history. "We are glad to support AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days and have the chance to continue telling great stories like that of Wes Cooley and the Suzuki GS1000," said Kerry Graeber, Vice President, Motorcycle/ ATV Sales and Marketing for Suzuki Motor

history began with the GSX-R750 in 1985. There's no doubt that ground-breaking model forever changed the landscape of motorcycle performance, but the GS inline fours raced by Wes in the late '70s and early '80s were the catalyst for the sportbike revolution that followed." The display will be paired with additional information about modern Suzuki sportbikes, including the GSX-R1000, GSX-R750 and GSX-R600.

him to write my CMA number on the check near the memo area. For some silly reason, he agreed to do all that – and I’m sure he was thinking about the day of payment; not by him, but by me.

CMA The Date Has Been Set A little over a year ago I shared an article with you titled, “Shar pei Puppy”. In that article I shared with you about the $150,000.00 challenge given to CMA Ohio members for CMA’s annual RFS (Run For The Son) Fund raiser. CMA’s annual RFS event is held the first Saturday of May each year. The following is an account of what took place the days after May 7, 2016. As you remember, Saturday, May 7, 2016, was our annual RFS. Becky & I enjoyed that day with members from 4 chapters in Ohio. Sunday morning we went to early Church – nothing unusual for a Sunday morning when we are home. Between early and late Sunday morning services is Small Group time. We attend C.A.T.S. Class. At the beginning of Small Group there is a lot of fellowshipping going on. As our leader called us to sharing for prayer time, I mentioned about RFS the day before. AND, then I said something like this, “Becky & I are at a point where if the C.A.T.S. Class would donate $2,000.00 to RFS we (Becky & I) would reach a level we never had before.” Then I really opened up my mouth by saying, “If C.A.T.S. do that, I will let the C.A.T.S. shave my head.” I must say, I was not prepared for what took place from there. It was a huge uproar with discussions all around on how they could make this happen. I consented to letting it happen if they raised $1,500.00. As things died down, it was calmly stated by the C.A.T.S. leader, “Dr O”, that in our class there are 2 members of the Church Missions Board and they make recommendations on how mission’s funds are spent. At this point I felt pretty calm about nothing happening because our Pastor had already told me he was sorry they hadn’t budgeted anything for our ministry. I told him that was fine because getting a donation for RFS wasn’t why we were members here at Crossroads Church. Monday passed, Tuesday passed, on into Wednesday and then Thursday arrived. No word from the C.A.T.S. Class and tomorrow was the cut-off date for getting our RFS packet into the mail. I might as well get it done and mailed so I don’t have to worry about getting it done on Friday. Off to the Post Office I go. I got my tracking number for the packet came home and sent the that to CMA National, and, forgot about any “short hair.” That night, I was mowing grass and finished around 8:15 p.m. Becky met me at the door with a big smile and shaking her head saying I needed to call Elmer. Elmer had something for me. Elmer is a member of our C.A.T.S. Class but he is also one the of two members of the Missions Board at Church – noooo! He didn’t! I called Elmer and sure enough he said he had a check for RFS in the amount of $1,500.00! I just laughed, shook my head and said to Elmer, you dog! Elmer was chucking but replied he has been called many things but not a dog. I just said, Elmer, you dog! We laughed a bit and I explained the check had to be in the mail the following day and be postmarked to be counted for RFS 2016. I gave him the address for CMA in Hatfield and stressed to have RFS in the memo area; then asked 20

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Elmer is a farmer raising mainly grain but some cattle. Bob, who is also a member of C.A.T.S., has sheep on his farm. Both Elmer and Bob have some real nice sheers for cutting, ah, wool, right? Elmer then shared something with me. He told me how he has been on many mission trips, which I knew. He said as a businessman he has to evaluate the value of the produce he receives for his investment. On some of his mission’s trips he has had to walk the same trail or roads the local pastors have to walk in order to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He said I know how time consuming those walks can be. In fact on one mission trip Elmer didn’t realize he and a partner had gone so far into the back country until they started out and everyone else had to wait on them to get back to the vehicle so they could return to the compound. Elmer said, I know what those pastors are going through and we cannot get the return from our investment in missions by keeping it at home. It needs to be invested in these countries CMA is reaching with their ministry partners. Before hanging up Elmer made sure I knew he and Bob would be well prepared for the day I settle up my account. The date has now been set for Sunday ,July 24, 2016. I know the C.A.T.S. Class would welcome anyone who wants to come and watch. I guess I didn’t dodge the bullet this year. I will be getting my head shaved. Silly me, but glory to the Lord for the extra $1,500.00 for RFS. GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

2016 THUNDER ROADS OHIO OHIO BIKE WEEK - BIKE SHOW

Ohio Bike Week once again played host to the International Master Bike Builders Association (IMBBA) for their Annual Bike Week Bike Show. Held indoors at the Broken Spoke Campground, the show allowed attendees to enjoy the bikes outside of the rain that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits. With the “Spirit of America” traveling display as a backdrop, the show featured a nice blend of styles – choppers, bobbers, and just a few big baggers. For the first time, the show featured a custom paint category and the competition was fierce as both the artistry and the technical aspects of the work was considered. One incredible entry actually transformed from a stylish but subdued paint scheme to a bold, patriotic design that recognized the service of its owner. As always, the IMBBA Judges objectively scored each of the bikes and the winners were announced. Owners and builders were able to discuss the scores with the judges and review the details of their bikes. Trophies were hand pinstriped by Bowersock Signs-N-Lines from Wapokenta, Ohio.

PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

E

ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checksin’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

28

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

State and Stop Prizes

E

very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

I

f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s all season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2015, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes! 2016 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!

T

he 2016 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It’s really that simple!

hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

Y

ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booths for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.

The RIDE kicks off in MAY!

Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com 32

BRING ON THE HEAT! Despite our incredible springtime snow storms, it seems that warmer temperatures have finally arrived. We’ve previously ran a number of articles on how to dress appropriately and handle riding in colder temperatures. Now that the sun and warmth have finally returned and riding season I in full swing, it seems appropriate to address the other extreme….riding in the heat. Now don’t get me wrong, I love warm weather. Nothing quite compares to the feeling I get riding down the highway with the sun on my skin, taking in the beauty of our state. But once summer creeps in and temperatures soar, along with the typical seasonal humidity…there are some things that we as bikers owe ourselves to be aware of. Just as in cold temperatures, where the risk of hypothermia is very real, summer heat brings along its own set of problems to endure. There are four types of heat disorders that we should be aware of. First is Sunburn. Symptoms include redness and pain. In extreme cases swelling of the skin and blisters may occur. Sunburn is generally the least invasive in a rider’s day, and easily avoidable. Wear a strong SPF sunscreen on all exposed skin while out, and reapply it frequently to keep your skin from burning. Try wearing cotton/synthetic blend long sleeve shirts, their moisture wicking fabric can actually keep you cooler than wearing short sleeves. Second on the list is heat cramps. This may seem pretty minor as well, but if your body starts cramping up, you cannot ensure safe operation of your bike. Heat cramps are characterized by muscular pains and spasms. The best thing you can do for this is stop and stretch, massage the cramps a bit, and drink water. If the cramping is accompanied by profuse sweating, the cramps will likely reoccur. Next is heat exhaustion. Symptoms include cool, moist, pale (or flushed) skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, and exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is due to prolonged or profuse sweating, when the body loses too much salt and water. When salt and water aren’t replaced, blood circulation diminishes and affects the heart, brain, and lungs. The best thing you can do if you start showing these symptoms is get inside somewhere that has air conditioning….and drink water. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to the fourth and final heat disorder.

ability to control your motorcycle and your reaction time to routine threats to motorcycle survival. If you or someone you’re riding with appears to be suffering from heat stroke, get them somewhere cool, provide water, and seek medical treatment immediately. When temperatures rise (above 90 degrees) and there is increased relative humidity, the human body is busy doing everything it can to maintain 98.6 degrees inside. The heart pumps more blood through dilated circulatory vessels and sweat glands pour out liquid saturated with essential dissolved chemicals like sodium and chloride. Sweating is the body’s “go to” for cool down. Generally this is highly effective, and our bodies carry on…business as usual. Why doesn’t sweating work for us while breezing down the road? Because as good as that wind feels on a hot day, it is actually preventing the act of sweating from cooling us at all…the wind snatches the sweat from our skin before it can evaporate, essentially stopping the cooling process. So what is a die-hard biker to do when the weather of the day seems to be straight out of the depths of hell? There are a few things we can do to ensure we stay safe during the dog days of summer. First, drink water (and/or commercial sports drinks) and lots of it. And don’t wait until you feel thirsty to start. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, as they increase dehydration. Dress for summer. Choose light colored clothing, and try to limit the amount of skin you leave exposed. Avoid sunburn…sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation much more difficult for your body. Choose your ride times for the coolest parts of the day if you are able. Finally, take regular breaks. Use those breaks to find some shade or air conditioning, reapply sunscreen, and down some more water…your body will thank you for it. Melanie Schwarte, Thunder Roads Iowa Melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com

Heat stroke is by far the most dangerous of these heat disorders. This occurs when the body’s temperature control system stops working. Body temperatures can reach so high that brain damage and/or death can occur if the body isn’t cooled quickly. Signs of heat stroke include hot, red, dry skin, changes in consciousness, rapid/ weak pulse, rapid/shallow breathing, very high body temperature, dilated pupils, decreased blood pressure, headache, nausea/ vomiting, dizziness/weakness, and mental confusion. In this state, a rider may appear to be intoxicated. Symptoms can badly affect your

TRO Racing Feature

A Few Minutes with George Roeder II year is the 10th anniversary of the TandhisWauseon National Flat Track Racing the major event is the “showdown at

sundown” featuring an exhibition vintage race between racing legends George “Geo” Roeder II and Jay “The Springer” Springsteen. George Roeder II has won over 50 professional races in his career on an XR 750 Harley-Davidson. He won the National Hot Shoe Championship numerous times as well. He is a multi-time winner of the “Old Time Newsies” in Dayton, OH – winning it in 2004 for the 11th time. Over his career, he finished in the top 20 in national points since 1988. His best finish, 8th, coming in 1992 and again in 1999. In 2004, he finished 13th overall for the season. Since officially retiring from racing, George Roeder II has been the hands-on owner of Roeder Racing in Monroeville, OH. He handles all of the machining and head work at the shop – giving the full “Roeder” treatment to customers that travel from across the country. This is the family business, founded by his father – Hall of Fame Racer “Big George” Roeder. Recently, though, George II has dusted off the leathers and headed over to Wauseon for the vintage races there. He has taken first place in class several years since, riding a 41 handshift Indian built by Kelly George. We had the opportunity to ask “Geo” a few questions as we look towards this year’s Wauseon race.

50

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

TRO: Tell us a little about the history and your thoughts on the race? George II: This will be the 3rd year for the showdown. It's always an exciting time of the year that I look forward to. Springer won the first year we raced and last year, I felt pretty good and I was ready to even the score and it rained and canceled the race. So, this year I'm coming back to win! Hopefully the bike will be running as good as last year (I'm sure it will be). TRO: We've heard you're riding a Kelley George prepared Indian Chief-can you tell us a little about the bike?

TRO: Indian Motorcycles has just announced that they are building a water cooled 750cc specifically for flat track racing and earlier this year, Roland Sands introduced his Hooligan Dirt Track races. Do you think that these are signs of resurgence of the interest in flat track, dirt racing? George II: That seems to be the case. Hopefully we will see a Harley vs Indian scenario like we did in the past! I think it's great Indian is getting involved and I hope do well and can develop something competitive. It won't be easy but from what I've seen, it doesn't look like they are cutting any corners. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

TRO: Can you tell us about your first competitive race on the flat track? George II: I was 5 when I raced for the first time. To be honest, I really don't remember much (laughed). I know my dad modified a 65 Harley-Davidson Shortster for me and I was able to ride it alone before my fourth birthday. (According to an old newspaper article that was published in 1975, from the ages 5-7, George II had picked up 4 first place finishes, five seconds, three thirds, and five fourth places, with 2 of places being in a national event.) My earliest memories from the race track, are from when I was about 12 years old. I remember going to the Amateur Nationals with my brother Will, where he placed 3rd.

George II: Actually it's a 1941 Indian Chief and it's fast! The bike is a hand shift, foot clutch and has no brakes and it's fast. It makes 70 horsepower, which is a lot for an old flat head. Kelley George always does a great job with the bikes. It's a really nice piece of craftsmanship. And did I mention it was fast?!

KENNEDY STYLE FROM RALLY TO RACING

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

- OHIO HAS SOME OF THE BEST TO OFFER Ohio Bike Week touts itself as the largest rally in the Midwest and it certainly was for 2016. I was concerned that OBW starting on Memorial Weekend would lend itself to some obstacles but I was pleasantly surprised. Motorcycles, campers and boaters all intermingled nicely the entire week. I would not be surprised if attendance records were set as the weather cooperated for the most part. (The storm that came up quickly on Sunday, June 5 th caught many off guard and I hope that no one sustained any injuries or major damage as a result). Crowds at concert venues were well attended as there was something for everyone. From hard driving rock at the free Jackyl concert to country stars Montgomery Gentry and everything in between.

TRO is again teamed up with AMA for this event which will be filled with racing of all types. In addition to vintage bikes competing in road racing, hare scrambles, motocross, and flat track; mini road racing is coming to Mid-OH www. ohiominiroadracingleague.com/amavmd-race There will also be Pit Bike TT racing in the infield Friday afternoon and early evening July 8th. The annual dinner ride from Mid-Ohio to Ashland county fairgrounds for flat track racing is Saturday, July 9. Cost is a $35 donation which benefits the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. It is a 40 mile ride through the Ohio countryside ending at the Fairgrounds with dinner at the track and reserved grandstand seating

SUZUKI Motor of America will sponsor the 40 year history of AMA Superbike and six Premier Custom Builders will give the weekend a modern touch as they display some of their best bikes along Builders Row. KTM Ride Orange returns and demo rides will be offered during the weekend and once again one of the largest motorcycle swap meets in the country will be held at the track. Mark your calendars now for some great Vintage Racing and motorcycles for everyone. And stop out at the TRO booth and say hi! As always ride safe, DENISE KENNEDY

But in Ohio we go from one venue to another as quickly as the weather changes. In addition to the hundreds of charity runs and bike nights across the state motorcycle enthusiasts now look toward AMA Vintage Days www. americanmotorcyclist.com/vmdnews at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington Ohio July 8-10. www. midohio.com

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip 35 Years of the Best Party Anywhere! THUNDER ROADS OHIO FEATURE EVENT Aug. 1-14, 2016 It’s always a challenge to describe the Sturgis Rally to anyone that’s never been there. The number of places to go, things to see, bands to hear, and crazy things to do seems almost endless – and THAT’S JUST AT THE BUFFALO CHIP! This year marks the 35th Anniversary of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip – which is simply billed as THE BEST PARTY ANYWHERE! That’s a hefty claim to make, but not one that’s ever really been challenged in any discussions I’ve heard. Covering almost 600 acres, the Buffalo Chip Campground is really a rally in itself – encompassing tent, RV, and cabin camping; bike shows and stunt riders, roller derby, midget bowling, beauty pageants, dancers, and one of the most incredible lineups of live musical entertainment ever seen. This year the list of entertainers includes Buckcherry, Pop Evil, Cheap Trick, Leon Russel, Elle King, 3 Doors Down, Five Finger Death Punch, Willy Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Kid Rock – and MANY MORE! The party lasts 9 days, includes over 40 bands, and covers 8 stages – and again, this is JUST what’s on site at the Buffalo Chip. Off-site there are the Black Hills, Rushmore, Deadwood, Spearfish, Hullet WY, the Devil’s Tower, and of course downtown Sturgis itself for riders to visit and explore; but at the end of the day, The Chip really is the place to be. Everyday there’s something else to see and do at the Chip – so much so, that the Buffalo Chip actually publishes their own newspaper each day of the Rally. With so much to do, we thought that we might bring up to speed on some of the highlights of this year’s rally and music festival at the legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip!

No MORE deadlock in and out of Sturgis!

During last year’s 75th Anniversary Sturgis celebration many were caught in frustrating traffic jams in and out of Sturgis and were forced to travel through the city in order to reach The Buffalo Chip and other campgrounds in the area. The outcry was loud in fact, that it helped fuel the realization of a decades long effort to complete Fort Meade Way. This 5.6 mile shortcut from I-90 exit to the front gate of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip officially opened on June 6, and allows a direct route without any stop signs or intersections.

The Buffalo Chip Moto Stampede Born from the Buffalo Chip Picnic, the beast feasted and roamed the plains, gathering momentum and other beasts to its side until the ground shook beneath them, man and gawds stirred, sweat flung from their frothy fur and fell from the sky like rain and it came to be known as the thunderous Moto Stampede!

RSD Super Hooligan™ Throwdown presented by Indian Motorcycle® Wednesday, Aug 10, 4:00 p.m. – Buffalo Chip Amphitheater Hooligan racing is a throwback to the days when young men lightened and tweaked their street machines into dirt track racers. Racing was done at local tracks and vacant lots where friends could gather to cheer on their buddies. The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club of Sturgis may have been the first ones to elevate flat track racing and organize a hooligan race back in the 1930s where they ran primarily American Made V twins. Today flat track hooligan racing is regaining popularity due to the same spirit. RSD Super Hooligan and Indian Motorcycle’s recent efforts to revive the thrill and “run what you brung” attitude has reignited a fire that still burns brightly in today’s moto and custom enthusiast. The hooligan races set to take place in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater on Wednesday, Aug. 10 will no doubt add fuel to the bonfire that is Hooligan racing. The Buffalo Chip dirt flat track, built by IV League Flat Track, circles the infield between the Wolfman Jack Stage and the Top Shelf with a couple of fairly sharp turns that should give racers pause, but probably won’t. Racers will be bringing their hand64

built street bikes out to compete. Hooligan rules are loose and limit the bikes to 750CC and up twins in stock frames with dirt track tires and no front brakes. The rules are meant to open up the racing to many manufacturers, creating exciting multi brand racing. Super hooligan racer Roland Sands and crew are slated to bring the highly competitive RSD Super Hooligan Indian Scout Sixty’s out. The RSD Super Hooligan Races, sponsored by Indian Motorcycle®, will bring back the excitement and surprises of traditional heritage racing in an intimate setting. Spectators will be lining the raceway where they unquestionably will feel the grit and dust as competitors scramble for the lead. To make this wild event even more interesting, one of the races will be completely inappropriate! Open to anyone who thinks they can handle the track and whatever may take place on it, racers may show up in costume, crazy helmets, whatever strikes their fancy. It’s all about fun and opening up the track to past, present and future racers to compete and have a blast doing it.

BUFFALO CHIP STREET DRAG INVITATIONAL with Crazy John

the concept of drag racing hasn’t changed in 40 years, the horsepower certainly has. These won’t be your granddaddy’s drag races.

Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1:30 p.m. Buffalo Chip Amphitheater

You’ve heard the stories, and maybe even seen the photos, of the crazy rally antics bikers perpetrated in City Park in the 70’s. Music and mayhem went hand in hand with burn outs, bike shows and drag racing. When the bikers were asked to leave City Park they took their antics, and racing, elsewhere. One group of intrepid racers, led by Crazy John Markwald, kept the faith, moving their drags to Sundance, WY and then Vale, SD where they attracted large crowds to their annual events. The races eventually outgrew even these locations and now they’re heading to light ‘em up in the Buffalo Chip’s amphitheater on Wednesday, Aug. 10. This group of boys claim they didn’t grow up, they’re still playing with their toys. But the bikes have certainly changed. They’ll be bringing bikes typically seen on the cover of the nation’s top motorcycle magazines or displayed behind velvet ropes at the biggest shows. These show bikes are the epitome of motorcycles, hot rods built with the best of the best performance parts and dressed with an over the top paint job. Staging the starting line near Club Chip, the racers will jump at the fall of the flag and give it all they got, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph, before passing under the steel bridge finishing line. There will be plenty of premium viewing areas for spectators wishing to catch these street drags. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness a truly organic rally event. While

Motorcycles As Art Michael Lichter and 30 Builders Consider “Skin & Bones” On the far side of the Buffalo Chip Campground lies the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Events Center. This 7,000 square foot indoor exhibit hall was built specifically to house an annual exhibit by Michael Lichter, famed photographer and curator of the “Motorcycles as Art” gallery. Last year, Lichter presented his Naked Truth Exhibit – which showcased an incredible array of motorcycles built by some of the worlds top builders along the theme of naked metal – no paint. This year his theme is that of “Skin & Bones – Tattoo Inspired Motorcycles and Art”. Over 30 masters of the motorcycle industry have accepted the challenge to build a bike befitting the theme for the exhibit. Each of these rolling metal sculptures will have theater lights focused on them as they are displayed atop elevated pedestals to better give guests an open view from every angle. “These builders reach deep, spending the time, exerting the effort and wielding the skills required to create a motorcycle masterpiece for this show,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter. “The bikes for this exhibit not only exemplify the theme, but also reflect the builder’s own personality and experiences, much like a tattoo.” In addition to the magnificent display of motorcycles, the richly symbolic art of the late, well-known tattoo artist and oil painter Richie Pan (short for Panarra) will hang in

no biker should miss.” the gallery alongside the works of eight additional mixedmedia artists. Pan brought the oils of his paintings to rest in depictions of machines and people that evoke an aura of ink embedded in flesh. His love of everything motorcycle is evident not only in the subject matter and characteristic symbolism displayed in most of his pieces but also in how they are incorporated into occasionally irreverent depictions and curious design. “Michael Lichter has again put together an eye opening exhibit that exposes the core roots of the motorcycling culture that only the world’s leading motorcycle photographer could reveal,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. “Michael’s expertise and knowledge, gained from being an integral part of biker culture over the past 35 years, is inspiring and surprising the motorcycling world with another “Motorcycles as Art” exhibit that not only offers an exclusive perspective into the world of motorcycling, but highlights its stunning character. The chance to see this year’s exhibit is an opportunity

SHOP TALK Performance

Walt Snider, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor For many of us, it’s an addiction. More power and more speed. It’s an unquenchable thirst that can only be temporarily satisfied. Is there ever an end to it in sight? Not likely. But it doesn’t mean we won’t stop trying. So how does it start, and what is involved in adding performance to a motorcycle? Again, just like everything, your budget and your preference is really what will determine how far you will go. There are some small mods that can be done that are relatively inexpensive to boost performance. Replacement of the air cleaner with a higher flowing one, along with a less restrictive exhaust can boost performance. After all, the more air you can move thru the engine, the more power it can produce. Switching to a better carburetor and intake can aid in performance too. With the ability to move more air, more fuel will be needed to run properly. Also, a better ignition system can help greatly.

performance. After that, you begin to look at stroker flywheels and crankshaft, oversized pistons and cylinders, etc. Depending on the size of your engine, it may be more cost effective to go with a larger displacement engine. Another option that is becoming more popular is adding a supercharger or turbo. Engine work is required generally for this as well. But it definately can make a bike stand apart from others. I would recommend speaking to the shop you intend to have do the work, and explain your goals to them. They should be able to advise you as to the best way to proceed. They should also inform you of any other areas that may need to be addressed for the safety and longevity of the motorcycle. For example - adding a lot of power to an engine while still utilizing a stock clutch is a sure way to find out how quickly one can be worn out. There are many other areas that can be affected as well, and the shop should cover everything when you talk with them.

Next month we’ll cover the topic of handlebars. If there’s anything in particular you’d like to see covered in this article, feel free to send an email to – Thunderroadsohio@gmail.com From the shop floor Walt Walt Snider Renegade Gentlemen Customs Owner and Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

These mods are pretty easy and can be done if you have some mechanical knowledge and ability. You won’t see huge power gains from these things, but it will increase. And for some people, it provides enough of a gain to be acceptable. The important thing to remember is that everything needs to work together. If the parts don’t complement each other mechanically, you won’t get the performance desired. This applies to pretty much everything performance related. After these mods, you begin to get into internal work on the engine, or outright replacement of the engine entirely. Deciding whether to use your existing engine or go with a new one is a decision you’ll need to make based on your overall expectations for the end result. Internal mods usually begin with headwork and larger valves to increase flow, and cams to change the height amd duration of the valves being open and closed. When designed to work together, you can dramatically increase 74

WETZELLAND 2016

Celebrating 30 Years of Letting Loose and Having Fun

T

here are countless “Biker Bashes” and motorcycle rallies across Ohio, the Midwest, and the country. There is only one WETZEL and it’s celebrating 30 years of craziness and biker fun this year. And if you want to have the experience of a lifetime with thousands of friends that you haven’t met yet – well, Wetzel is the place to go. For years now, Wetzel has been one of our favorite rallies for one simple reason – the people that attend. While many rallies have become amateur hours for far too many idiots, Wetzel has maintained a cool atmosphere where people just let loose and have fun. There are some pretty simple rules, which the Wetzel MC – the hosts of the party strictly enforce.

It’s this last one that has really allowed this rally to become the favorite of thousands. There are plenty of hard core bikers here, but this isn’t about trying to see who the baddest dude is. This rally is about kicking back and having a great time. This year’s rally features entertainment by HINDER, THEORY OF A DEADMAN, JASMINE CAIN, The Band Brother, and our good friends The Burnt River Band! There are must see biker rodeo games on Friday and Saturday, and plenty of great vendors – some of which are even open 24 hours throughout the rally.

• YOU MUST BE 21 • NO FIREWORKS, PETS, ATV’S, OR FIREARMS ALLOWED. • NO GLASS – and yes, coolers will be checked. And most importantly.. • NO ATTITUDES.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT 7 tips for Summer Weather Concealed Carry wherever you’ll be. Urban and suburban areas generally call for a higher level of retention than rural areas.

by Sean Maloney, Esq. Second Call Defense

Of course, check the local laws first, because in some states open carry is forbidden. And even when open carry is legal, you should consider the reaction some people may have to seeing a gun and the possibility that you could have negative reactions from police.

The weather is warming and it’s time to switch to summer methods of concealed carry. For some, it’s not a big deal. You may carry the same way all year long. For others, the shorts and T-shirts are coming out, and concealment will become more of a challenge. Here are some methods of warm weather concealed carry. These could be helpful if you dress to stay cool but still want to stay armed. 1. Wear lose clothing. It’s been years since my children informed me that «you don’t tuck your shirt in, Dad.» Far be it from me to question the wisdom of teenagers and current style. By wearing loose fitting, baggy clothes, concealed carry becomes both simple and stylish. Oversized T-shirts, Polo, and Oxford style shirts drape effortlessly over your firearm of choice. 2. Switch to inside the waistband (IWB). Inside the waistband is my preferred method of carry, so for me there is no change. However, many friends of mine carry outside the waistband (OWB). Simply switching from OWB to IWB is often all it takes, without even downsizing the gun. 3. Carry a smaller firearm. I can hear some people cringing as I write this. But it›s better to discreetly carry a smaller firearm than not to carry at all. If you can›t wear your standard concealed carry firearm because of summer dress, don’t resort to wearing a jacket in 90 degree heat. Just downsize. With today’s .380 and 9mm calibers, light polymer or alloy frames, small pistols and revolvers made specifically for carry, more choices are available than ever before. In addition, today’s self defense ammo is of much higher quality than ever before. Remember, practice, practice, practice, with an unloaded firearm first. No matter how good you are with your primary firearm, your warm weather secondary firearm requires a totally different presentation and aim.

84

4. Try pocket carry. A gun in the pocket can be every bit as lethal for self defense as your primary firearm. I constantly remind my students that there is “no such thing as a little .38.” As long as you pick a suitable firearm, with a functional pocket holster, you’re all set for whatever life throws at you. Once again, practice, practice, practice. Pocket carry presents a greater challenge when it’s time to draw than holster carry. One more thing. Reserve that pocket for your firearm only. There is nothing more embarrassing, or fatal, then drawing your cell phone in self defense.

7. Go for deep concealment. Your choices for deep concealment seem almost endless these days, including belly bands, appendix carry pouches, and bra holsters. Some of these methods require you to get past clothing used as cover, which makes drawing more difficult. But assuming you practice and feel comfortable that you can draw effectively in a high-stress situation, these are all additional options to consider. Whether you change your method of carry for one day or the entire season, remember the importance of becoming familiar with your method of carry. Practice with an unloaded firearm and work out all the kinks in your draw stroke. It has to become second nature. In a life-or-death situation, you won’t have time to think. You’ll have about 1.5 seconds and will have to depend on muscle memory to deploy your weapon properly.

5. Use a fanny pack. Yes, a fanny pack screams concealed carry geek. But sometimes, it›s your only option. Try it once and you might find it›s what you›ve been looking for. In tourist settings, you will blend right in. And in any setting, the only people likely to know you›re carrying are fellow concealed carry advocates.

A smaller firearm, for example, has a smaller grip and a shorter distance between the front and rear sight, making it more difficult to score accurate hits. Dry fire practice is essential. Remember, all it takes is a little time and effort to build muscle memory with your secondary firearm or alternate method of carry. You’re not starting from scratch. You’re simply building on your existing skills to create a new skill set with different equipment.

6. Open carry. With the introduction of legal concealed carry in nearly every state, open carry is not my choice in most situations. However, some of my friends regularly chose to open carry. And for those times when concealed carry is not an option, open carry is a simple solution. Just be sure to use a holster with the appropriate level of retention for

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT How the new Ohio NICS-compliant carry license is good for everyone by Jim Irvine, Buckeye Firearms Association Ohio has recently joined other states in having our Concealed Handgun License (CHL) certified as “NICS-compliant” by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE). While this is nothing new, it is new for Ohio. I would like to explain some of the many ways this can be good for everyone. The NICS system is often referred to as an “instant background check.” For many, it’s anything but “instant.” Some people may get a “hold” when buying a gun. For an unlucky few, this happens every time they make a firearm purchase. Most people denied the ability to buy a gun have done nothing wrong, but there are errors in the database that prevent lawful gun owners from exercising their civil and Constitutional rights. Neither the potential gun buyer, nor the gun seller get to see the reason why a person is denied, so finding and fixing errors is difficult and expensive at best. But when a sheriff does a background check for a CHL, (s)he is not asking the government for permission to issue, (s) he is looking at the records. This allows the sheriff to sort through errors with an applicant, and if the person really is legally permitted to buy/possess guns and obtain a CHL, one is issued.

And last but not least, it has the potential to save many lives and could lead to the stopping of an active killer before they are able to fire a single shot. How? On June 7, 2015, a 21-year-old while male entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (which is a “gun free zone”) in Charleston, South Carolina. He was welcomed and spent about an hour with the bible study group. Then he pulled out a gun and killed nine people, aged 26 to 87. One woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter played dead and were spared. FBI director James Comey admitted that the killer should have been denied when purchasing his gun, but was not. The NICS system failed to stop the killer. Maybe if the BATFE spent less time rerunning people who have already passed a background check, they would have been able to return a correct answer to the dealer who was given a “proceed” before selling the killer a gun. The NICS-compliant check is an important step for Ohio, and for the nation. We thank those in the legislature and Attorney General’s office who helped bring this important approval to Ohio.

Jim Irvine is Board President of Buckeye Firearms Association. He is also BFA PAC Chairman and recipient of the NRAILA’s 2011 “Jay M. Littlefield Volunteer of the Year Award,” the CCRKBA’s 2012 “Gun Rights Defender of the Year Award,” and the SAF’s 2015 “Defender of Freedom Award.”

uckeye Firearms Association is a grassroots Badvancing organization dedicated to defending and the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation.

This helps gun dealers because they finally have a way to sell guns to legal buyers who otherwise can’t walk into a store to buy guns. It saves them time, and thus money. It is good business. It may lead to increased firearm sales and extra tax dollars for the government. By having law enforcement “pre-check” people, it takes a burden off BATFE and frees up their limited resources to process other people. This is great news for anyone living in a state which does not have a NICS-compliant carry license, and people in Ohio who buy guns but don’t have a CHL. Even gun control fans should be happy because Ohio law is now better aligned with Federal law. In a few years police will know that anyone with a valid CHL is a lawful gun owner.

1 tbsp oil 1 pound pasta, any shape (I like the curly ones) 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 tbsp butter 1 1/2 cups milk 2 cups shredded cheese, like cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Colby 1 cup shredded smoked cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon powdered mustard 6 cherry tomatoes, diced •

In a bowl, toss your sliced zucchini, squash and onions with oil and a little salt and pepper to taste. I prefer to grill them until they are tender but you can also just cook them on the stove top.

Meanwhile, bring about 4 quarts of water to a boil over high heat in the large stock pot that has been salted so its tastes a little less like a salty ocean.

Add the pasta and cook until the pasta about 8 minutes, still a bit firm, not soggy.

Drain the pasta and set aside.

In a sauce pan melt the butter over medium heat and add the flour and stir to create a roux.

Then add milk in and whisk until there are no lumps.

Keep stirring until the milk begins to thicken a bit but do NOT boil.

Turn the heat to low and begin mixing handfuls of cheese into the milk.

Stir in the salt and mustard powder and keep it all moving until all the cheese has melted and the sauce is creamy.

Add in the pasta and cooked veggies and stir to coat.

Serve hot! But be careful that cheese can be mean lol

*

Add in a little diced chicken or ham and you have a complete meal!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... Get back in your Bottle...

Don't Laugh...

A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead all die. In order to get into heaven though, they must go up 100 steps, each containing a joke. The trick is that they must not laugh. The brunette goes first and laughs at the first step and is sent to hell. The redhead goes next and makes it to the seventh step before she laughs. Finally, it’s the blondes turn. She gets all the way to the 99th step before she laughs. God asks her, “You were so close, why did you laugh?” and she responds, “I just got the first joke!”

Fishing for Blondes...

Three blondes are sitting by the side of a river holding fishing poles with the lines in the water. A Game Warden comes up behind them, taps them on the shoulder and says, “Excuse me, ladies, I’d like to see your fishing licenses.” “We don’t have any,” replied the first blonde. “Well, if you’re going to fish, you need fishing licenses,” said the Game Warden. “But officer,” replied the second blonde, “we aren’t fishing. We all have magnets at the end of our lines and we’re collecting debris off the bottom of the river.” The Game Warden lifted up all the lines and, sure enough, there were horseshoe magnets tied on the end of each line. “Well, I know of no law against it,” said the Game Warden. “Take all the debris you want.” And with that, he left. As soon as the Game Warden was out of sight, the three blondes started laughing hysterically. “What a dumb Fish Cop,” the second blonde said to the other two. “Doesn’t he know that there are steelhead trout in this river?”

A man and his wife were playing golf. The man tees off and his ball veers way off to the right, breaking the window of a house. The wife says you must go and apologize and pay for the window. Both the man and his wife walk up to the house, ring the door but no one answers. He opens the door and inside, next to the window he sees a broken vase with his golf ball laying on the floor. Suddenly a man comes out of a nearby room, the golfer starts to apologize for breaking his window and the vase. The man inside the house says, “No, don’t apologize, I am a genie and have been stuck in that vase for 10,000 years, you have rescued me and I owe you deeply. For helping me I will grant three wishes. I will give you one, your lovely wife one and I would like to keep one for myself.” He asks the man what he wishes for. The man thought awhile and said, “I wish for a million dollars.” The genie waves his hand and said, “A million dollars, it’s yours, it has been deposited into your bank account.” He asks the wife what is her wish. She says, “I wish for a condominium in Hawaii.” The genie waves his hand and says, “A condominium in Hawaii, it’s yours.” The genie continues, “Now it is my turn.” He thinks for awhile and says, “You know its been 10,000 years since I have had a woman, could I make love to your wife?” The man thinks for a while and says, “Honey, he gave us a million dollars and a condominium in Hawaii, the least you could do is make love to him.”

She agrees and they both go to the back bedroom. After making passionate love, the woman says, “I can’t believe that my husband let you do this to me.” The genie says, “And I can’t believe that your husband still believes in genies.”

From the mouths of Babes... A mother invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to her six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied. “Just say what you hear mommy say,” the woman answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”
