FROM THE PUBLISHER This has been a whirlwind summer, with so many rides, rallies, and other events that I have honestly lost count of how many we’ve been to. As tired as I am, though, I am not complaining. I am truly blessed to have the job I do, and I thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to live this life. Thank you. Looking back at all these events and stops, there are certainly some that I’d recommend more than others – and I’m sure that you have your favorites as well. To that end, we’ve decided to open things up for a Reader’s Choice Award and have included a ballot on page 9. We’d like to hear what your favorites are, and we’ve included a few survey questions to help us further develop the magazine. To be clear though, I don’t want everyone ripping pages out of the magazine! You can just scan, fax, or even take a picture and email that to us. We will compile the results and hope to have them included with some awards for the winners in our December issue. Speaking of upcoming issues, we plan on once again dedicating our November issue of TRO to our Veterans – as we recognize them on November 11th, Veteran’s Day. I recently had the opportunity to work with the US VETERANS MC as part of their VetFest Event held at Rip Rap Roadhouse this past month. (We have a few photos on page 14 from there, but look for more coverage in next month’s issue.) While there I had the privilege of meeting PFC William “Billy” Wilch who served our nation during World War II and came ashore at Omaha. I also met the family of Kristal Baudier – who was just deployed overseas in service to our country, leaving behind a young daughter and her husband. It was truly a very humbling experience considering the service of both and the sacrifices their family have made. Generations apart, but both represent strong examples of values that helped build our nation. As we prepare for our November issue, we would like to recognize more Veterans and invite our readers to send in pictures of loved ones and family members that are serving or have served. If you’d like to include a picture of them and their bikes – great, but that’s optional. We will include as many as we can in our upcoming issue. You can email them to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Please don’t mail physical photos especially those that cannot be replaced, as we cannot ensure that they will get returned. Summer’s over, but this is my favorite time of year to ride. I enjoy the cooler temperatures and the chance to comfortably wear my leathers and heavier gear as well. Most of the bike nights and events are winding down, but that just means that I get more of a chance to explore more new stops! With any luck, we might even cross paths in our travels! Until then, ride safe and live strong!

REPORT American Motorcyclist Association encourages riders to Vote Like A Campaign, website help riders learn candidate positions on motorcycling issues PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association is reaching out to riders across the country to encourage them to become informed about motorcycling issues, ask their candidates where they stand and then Vote Like A Motorcyclist on Election Day, Nov. 8. “Since 2010, we have made this online tool available, so motorcyclists and all-terrainvehicle owners can educate themselves and help them decide which candidates to support,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations. “Everyone who is eligible should register to vote, support candidates who reflect their views, get involved with campaigns and cast a ballot on Election Day.” This year, voters will determine who will reside in the White House for the next four years, who will occupy 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, who will win 34 spots in the U.S. Senate and who will occupy the governor’s mansion in 12 states. Important motorcycling issues these politicians are likely to address during their terms in

office include increasing amounts of ethanol in our fuel supply, motorized access to public land, distracted driving, lane splitting, federal exhaust regulations for competition-only bikes, vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology and many others.

Dick Burleson honored as 2016 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend Ceremony on Oct. 13 in Orlando to induct eight Hall of Famers

The AMA Vote Like A Motorcyclist website (www.cqrcengage.com/amacycle/VLAM) also provides a report on how incumbent candidates have voted on issues important to motorcyclists and whether they have cosponsored bills favorable or unfavorable to motorcycling interests. In addition, the AMA has provided a map that links visitors to each state’s page, where they can find the candidates who will appear on their ballot. “With so many seats in Congress up for a vote, as well as the White House, this election will set the political tone for years to come,” Allard said. “It is important for riders to identify motorcycle-friendly candidates and factor motorcycling issues into their decision on Election Day.” For more information about the AMA Vote Like A Motorcyclist campaign, visitwww. cqrcengage.com/amacycle/VLAM. PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Each year at the ceremony inducting a new class into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, an existing Hall of Famer is honored as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend. For 2016, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend is Dick “King Richard” Burleson, the most successful racer in the history of the AMA National Enduro Championship. “One man has achieved more than any other in America’s grandest and oldest off-road racing discipline: Dick Burleson,” said Ken Ford, a member of the Hall of Fame executive committee and treasurer of the AMA board of directors. “We are pleased to recognize Mr. Burleson as our 2016 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend and showcase the drive, athleticism, talent and focus that powered him to eight consecutive AMA National Enduro Championships.” Burleson, who was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1999, will be honored Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando alongside the Class of 2016. Tickets are $130 per person. AMA Life Members pay $120. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers can attend for no charge. Reservations can be made here: www.americanmotorcyclist.com/induction.

Hillclimbs are essentially one-person drag races up the face of a challenging hill, with each rider allowed at least two attempts to conquer the hill. The winner is the rider who climbs the hill the quickest or, if no one reaches the top, makes it the farthest. Some hills are speed hills, where most riders make it to the top and speed determines the winner. Other hills are technical, where few riders reach the summit and the length a rider makes it up the hill determines where he or she places. The best amateur riders in the country compete every year in the AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship. This year, the AMA Hill Climb Grand Championship was held July 30-31, in Neoga, IL. As with most AMA amateur national championships, and in recognition of the range of participants in amateur competition, the event includes multiple classes to provide ample opportunity for amateur racers to compete. Both age-, displacement- and bike-configuration classes are featured. 2016 AMA Hill Climb Grand Championship, Neoga IL July 30-31, 2016 Photos by Jen Muecke for the American Motorcyclist Association, reprinted with permission.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, Here we are getting the bike packed for our Labor Day ride and I’m writing the October article. The facts this month will be one month old, but I think everyone will get the message that we need to ride extra cautious. In 2015 to date, we’ve had 2682 crashes and 124 fatalities compared to 2016, we had 2614 crashes and 116 fatalities. If we look at Motorcycle Ohio’s report we look worse. They look at the Police reports that I sometimes can’t see, so look at the numbers with an open mind and realize that all the numbers are bad so we need to ride with caution. As we all ride together and compare riding experiences sometimes we need to look into these conversations. One that comes to mind is that car and truck drivers don’t care about us. I would say that this is not true. Most people don’t want to run into us, but most likely did not see us. Let’s look at some of the possible reasons that affect why they can’t see us; the sun setting behind us, we are in the glare of head lights, can be hidden behind a door post and just the fact that we are smaller and cannot be seen. If you are in the sunset, move to one side of the lane or other to make yourself more visible. Do your best to stay out of the glare of head lights behind you. Put your hi beam on so they can tell the difference when you beam down. Don’t ride in the blind spots of cars and trucks. If you look at the mirror and you see them, they can see you. Also don’t hang out next to a car or truck.

12

I talk a lot about getting trained and sharpening your skills. In class you learn that keeping your eyes moving and scanning ahead will help keep you out of that crash. But sometimes hazards will pop up too quickly. You need to cut speed and try to not hit the big mass. Go for the edge or the small part. Try to protect yourself by wearing boots, gloves, long pants and yes, even a helmet. All of these could help. Now for the big one, “I laid it down”. Most of the time this statement means you overbraked and down it went. We should all realize we can stop faster with the brakes than if we are sliding to a stop on our side. With good braking and off the brakes and counter steer and back on the brake, you can miss a crash. You can get good at braking if you go to a parking lot and practice. Motorcycle Ohio is still running classes so if you have the time, this is a good time of the year to get in. If you have never taken a class it will be worth your time. They will show you the reason you do what you do and then you can practice and get better. Also if you were interested in becoming an instructor and just did not get it done, they will sign you up at Motorcycle Ohio and you will be ready to make about $26.00 per hour next year. This is the last month to make up your mind who to vote for. I can’t tell you the best person, whether we are talking the President, Federal, State or your local Mayor. You need

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

to ask yourself if this is the best person for the job, to represent you and your Motorcycle lifestyle. Will this person support motorcycle friendly laws and help make the roads safe? Know who you are voting for. In the September ABATE State Board meeting, I passed out a trifold named “A Motorcyclist’s Guide to Safely Riding the State Routes in Holmes County”. It was put out by Holmes County Safe Communities organization. It has some great routes laid out and points out hazard areas. To get a copy contact the ABATE of Ohio Inc. State office, your Region Director or myself. With the fall color changes and the last chances to take a ride, this will help in planning a nice ride. It will even show you some new areas to see and I’m always hunting for that. Please get out and support your local and state rights organization. If you are already a member, thank you and please sign up a new member. With getting new government leaders we will have new laws introduced that we may not like and we all will need to act on them. By Keith “Elmo” Tickle, Ohio State President -- U.S. Veterans MC (USVMC)

You see it off in the immediate horizon, you are about to

embark on the “new” world of civilian life after devotedly serving this great nation of ours. It is only anticipated that this instant generates high levels of stress. Thus, it is of utmost importance to understand and prepare for the emotional challenges that lie ahead in this conversion as you now become known as a “Veteran.” After 24 years of honorable service, I was faced with this quandary in 2011 and was acutely misplaced on how to traverse let alone reintegrate into this abyss known as “civilian world.” Most importantly, how do I figure out what my privileges are as a Veteran? How do I capitalize on them to the greatest capacity I can? Lastly, and most mystifying to most of us, where do I begin? This monthly column is intended to answer just these questions. The intention is to provide your roadmap of “guided valor” through your transition. We begin this monthly ride with what is our most important link to our Military Service … our DD Form 214.

So the day has finally come and you take off your uniform

for the last time. You’re moving into a new dynamic of untouched “civilian life;” DD Form 214 in hand and need to figure out where to start. The DD214 shows your status as a separated or retired military member and the nature of your service including dates, awards and decorations and other important details. This is the single-most important document you will have that shows your past military service and will be the primary document that allows you to capitalize on all of your entitlements as a “Veteran.” In many cases you are required to have a DD214 to claim benefits post-retirement or separation. The GI Bill and VA home loan products are two examples—you cannot be approved for a VA home loan or the GI Bill without showing proof of service, which is the DD214 in the case of separated or retired service members. Scan and save electronically, make photocopies and lock away your original copies.

But wait … there are two versions of the DD Form 214,

usually referred to simply as "short" (edited or deleted) copies and "long" (unedited or undeleted) copies. The edited or "short" copy omits a great deal of information, chiefly the characterization of service and reason for discharge, thus the unedited or undeleted copy is generally desired by employers. Service members receive two copies of the DD-214 when they are discharged - a short form and THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

a long form. The long form includes the narrative reason for discharge, the discharge characterization (Honorable, General, etc…), the three-letter or three-number discharge code corresponding to the reason for discharge, and a reenlistment code. This information is not included on the short form. Essentially, the DD214 long form specifies the person's reason for leaving and quality of service (the "grade" of discharge). When trying to attain any Veteran benefits; it is of utmost importance you have copies of the long-form as this shows your discharge characterization and varying characterizations drive levels of Veteran benefits. ROAD HAZZARD ALERT: As I was retiring from the military, one of the things mentioned was registering my DD214 with my local courthouse. Recording your discharge papers with your County Recorder ensures that they are readily available if your original copy is lost, damaged, or destroyed. However, after further discussion with the county, I was informed that my DD-214 will now become a public document and there is no legal way to prevent someone from looking at it and requesting a copy. THUS, I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF IDENTITY THEFT AND DID NOT REGISTER IT!! Each county is different and if you have already registered your DD Form 214 with your County Recorder, please take a moment to find out how ‘protected’ your information is. It is definitely worth the phone call to ask. Please keep this in mind as you determine whether or not to register your DD Form 214.

Well, time to pull off the road and fill up the tank … come

back next month as we will talk more about comprehensive entitlements you may or may not know about as a Veteran. The programs and entitlements are abundant throughout all of our Veteran assistance programs. And don’t forget, you earned these privileges. Until then; ride safe, and always keep the doors of wisdom open . USVMC is a non-profit 501(c) (19) organization driven to show respect and support for all Veterans who served honorably. USVMC is a proud member of the Ohio Confederation of Clubs (COC). Ohio COC is rich in Veteran support initiatives and can assist with critical Veteran necessities.

If you have a Veteran need, please speak to a member of COC or please email elmo.usvmcoh@gmail.com

AS SUMMER WINDS DOWN.... If you had the opportunity to attend the 10th Annual Thunder on the Strip I hope you had the chance to experience all that it had to offer. For me Thunder on the Strip signals the end of Summer. Maybe not the end of riding season but it brings one to the realization that before too long the bikes will be pickled for the Winter. A ride in this area of Northeast Ohio is filled with the fragrance of ripening grape vines. It is something I truly enjoy and look forward to every year. It is a nice change of pace from the downtown strip and I am amazed at how many riders we meet along the way. If the large crowds were any indication Thunder on the Strip 2016 seemed to be a success. Bands were abundant from one end of The Strip to the other. The weather cooperated with the exception of Saturday night which again turned into Mother Nature’s waterworks. However a little rain doesn’t dampen the spirits of the riding community. Many stayed well into the wet night waiting for L.A. Guns who did not disappoint. People watching is part of the experience. Riders from the hard core to the occasional rider come in all shapes, sizes and all ages. However I have noticed our riding community is aging. It seems that relatively few young people are attending rallies of this type. I am not sure if some feel they would not be welcome because many ride sport bikes. I would hope that isn’t the case as two wheels is two wheels. But I believe we need to find a way to reach younger riders no matter their ride of choice. My son, nephew and their girlfriends joined us for part of the weekend. One rides either his Buell Firebolt or a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 and the other a Sportster. They enjoy the weekend at Geneva as it is an opportunity to spend time together as a family and to share something we have in common. RIDING! For those of us who have kids that ride share your experiences and encourage them to join you. After all we are all family. As always ride safe, Denise Kennedy

CMA Jesus Is The Way In talking with people I have heard many explanations as to how they think they can get to heaven. Some of the responses are: I’m a good person; If God is love He will not send anyone to Hell; I don’t steal or rob others He’ll accept me; If there is a God He wouldn’t let the things that happened to me happen; I go to Church every Sunday, I’m okay; etc, etc, etc. Revelations 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” NASB This tells us a lot about several of these statements above. It is a relationship with Jesus Christ not our good works or good actions or attending Church that will get us to heaven.

John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me.” NASB This verse gives us the real answer to making it to heaven. We can only get there through Jesus Christ. That means we must acknowledge to Him we are sinners. We must ask Him to forgive us of our sins. We must ask Him to come into our lives. We must allow Him to change us from what we were and live our lives for Jesus. Kind of short and kind of simple. We need to know what Jesus Christ is; who Jesus Christ is; acknowledge what and who Jesus Christ is; and accept Jesus Christ into our lives in order to make it into heaven. I want to go to heaven, how about you? GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

Matthew 5:45b, “for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” NASB This addresses the idea behind some of the reasons people give for not wanting to follow Jesus. Good and bad things happen to followers of Jesus Christ just like the non-believer.

The Ride for the Rhinos Iron Pony launches a ride into The Wilds! Admittedly, when I first heard about “The Ride for the Rhinos” I didn’t really know what to think. What Rhinos? Was that a reference to something else? But then I discovered that one of the largest free roaming, protected herds of White Rhino’s in the world is found right here in Ohio – at The Wilds! For over a year, Frank Lark, Vice President of Marketing with the Iron Pony Motorsports Group, has worked on developing a feature ride that Iron Pony could host and develop into a major ride event. In fact, Frank’s goal was to create a ride that would quickly become the largest in the entire state. With such an ambitious goal, it was important that they found a cause that everyone could get behind, but also an organization that they could effectively get behind with a long term campaign. While Frank was considering various partners, Chris Jones, President of Iron Pony Motorsports Group had the opportunity to go on a fishing trip to The Wilds. While there he was not only amazed by the incredible resource essentially in his backyard, he realized that he had found the perfect cause for Iron Pony to support. The Wilds was supported by the local, world famous Columbus Zoo and the folks there embraced the idea of sending hundreds of riders out to their amazing facility in the hills of After months of planning, The Ride for the Rhinos became a reality and Thunder Roads Ohio was invited to become a promotional partner and join in the event. Iron Pony went all out for this event and really wanted to make certain that riders saw value in this first year event. They asked for only a $15 donation for each rider and just $5 for each passenger. In return, everyone received an OpenAir Safari Pass for The Wilds® ($30 value), a special Ride for The Rhinos collector’s t-shirt ($20 value), a continental breakfast, and a chance to win a $1,000 Iron Pony® Gift Card just for registering. All of that for just $15! Really was a great deal, and Iron Pony offered everyone the chance to register in advance on EventBrite.com. Just a few days before the event, more than 150 riders were registered and the organizers were pleased with their first year response. In the final days, however, the forecast improved and Thunder Roads pushed the ride heavily online through eblasts and on our social media pages. In the final 48 hours before the event, more than 300 additional riders registered and organizers scrambled to accommodate the swelling numbers. The morning of the event – the skies were clear and more than 460 riders joined together for the inaugural Ride for the Rhinos! It really was an impressive scene as the line of riders to register seemed to stretch from the front entrance of Iron Pony where the registration tables were set up, across the entire parking lot to just shy of Westerville Road. I really can’t ever recall seeing a line that long to register for a ride. Even more impressive was the variety of riders that were represented – just about the entire spectrum of riding machines were represented. Of course there were Harley’s and Indians, but just about an equal number of metric bikes – of all makes and models. There were vintage bikes, huge touring bikes, and even a scooter or two – preparing for the 90+ mile ride out to the Wilds. 20

The Wilds The Wilds is one of the largest wildlife conservation centers for endangered species in North America. It sits on more than 9,000 acres (approx. 14 square miles) of land in Cumberland, Ohio – about 90 miles east of Columbus. This entire expanse was once the domain of coal surface mining operations – incorporating massive dragline scoops such as the legendary “BIG MUSKIE”. In the 70’s Federal Regulations were enacted that required that surface mined land be restored through contouring, applications of top soil, and then erosion control plantings. The concept of a massive wildlife preserve is then conceived and developed as a public-private partnership involving the Ohio Departments of Natural Resources and Development, the Ohio zoos, and private sector supporters. Then in 80’s The Central Ohio Coal Company, a subsidiary of American Electric Power Company, gifted 9,154 acres of land to The International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, Inc. – and The Wilds became a reality. The property includes more than 2,000 acres of pastures for wildlife to roam, a 27 acre Carnivore Conservation Center, an Audubon Bird Sanctuary, a butterfly habitat, more than 15 miles of mountain bike and hiking trails, and about 150 lakes.

All of this sounds pretty incredible, but my Wilds experience can be summed up in two moments. The first came a few minutes after passing a large sign announcing that I was entering The Wilds. I was just driving down a windy country road, one of many in that part of the state, when I glanced over and realized that there was a herd of buffalo running over a nearby hill. These were just rolling hills and there certainly was no semblance of pens or fencing holding them in – there was just a herd of buffalo roaming the hills of central Ohio. Bear in mind that I have made several trips out to Sturgis and the national parks surrounding there and never seen more than 2 Buffalo out there. Now, here I am out by Zanesville – where the Buffalo appear to roam… It was pretty cool.

Across this vast expanse, more than 500 animals representing 29 species from around the world make up managed animal population at The Wilds. From American Bison to three different species of giraffe, from Bactrian camels to cheetahs, from African wild dogs to zebra – they all call The Wilds home. It’s really incredible, and they don’t just leave the animals to roam – they actively monitor and manage the lives of these animals to ensure the well-being and population growth of these endangered animals. In 2015 alone, the Wilds became the birthplace of 61 animals, including Bactrian camel, Bactrian deer, banteng, budgerigar, Grevy’s zebra, Pere David’s deer, Persian onager, Przwalski’s wild horse, sable antelope, scimitar-horned oryx, and Sichuan takin. The Wilds is internationally recognized for both their Rhinoceros and Cheetah Breeding Programs. The Wilds is the only known facility outside of Africa with fourth and fifth generation rhino calves born into human care – with 16 white rhinos and 6 one-horned rhinos born at the facility.

The next “wow” moment occurred when I walked passed through the Visitor Center and walked out onto the back observation deck. From this point the ground falls away and you are given a breath taking view of such an incredible expanse. You look out over zip lines, lakes, rolling hills. It really reminded me of the scene in the movie Jurassic Park where they look out over the rolling hills and first see herds of dinosaurs. I certainly didn’t see herds of dinosaurs, but would you really think it any more likely to see herds of zebras, giraffe, and rhinos roaming the hills just outside of Zanesville. I could fill this entire magazine with observations and details about The Wilds and all they have to offer. Instead, I’m going to simply suggest that you visit their website and then make a trip out on your own to this amazing ride destination in Central Ohio. It’s also worth noting that it’s a great ride from just about anywhere in Ohio and you can easily incorporate some of the most popular roads in the state for riding. The “Triple Nickel” is nearby – along with countless winding country roads. We’ve already begun discussions on how we can build on this ride for next year and help achieve Iron Pony’s goal of making this the largest ride in the state. So, keep an eye out for announcements as to the date of next year’s ride. Of course, we will let you know here in the pages of Thunder Roads Ohio. However, I’d encourage you to squeeze in a ride on your own to this incredible ride destination before then. There are facilities to stay overnight, even with the whole family. It really is a stop that you just have to see for yourself, and I’m already working on plans to head back still this year. Regardless, I hope to see you all at the 2017 Ride for the Rhinos – supporting and increasing awareness of one of our state’s most unique treasures – The Wilds! For more information on The Wilds – visit thewilds.columbuszoo.org For more than 500 photos from the Ride and The Wilds, visit our facebook page. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio Event photos were taken by D. PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

E

ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checksin’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

24

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

State and Stop Prizes

E

very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

I

f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s all season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2015, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes! 2016 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!

T

he 2016 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It’s really that simple!

hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

Y

ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booths for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.

The RIDE kicks off in MAY!

Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com 28

W

ith the Heroin Epidemic growing all around us, the stories of people overdosing and the loss of life from Heroin, the negative surrounds us daily. It is great to see groups in the biker community helping and trying to make a positive impact to fight against this battle. There are many groups including Harleys Against Heroin, Steele Horses United Against Heroin and Hogs Against Heroin along with other groups in the state that are helping to fight this terrible drug. Thunder Roads Ohio has had the opportunity to work with and support Harleys Against Heroin on the east side of Cincinnati for their events this year. The organizers of the group, Nikki & Keith Patton, Ron & Layla Fletcher and Tyra Meredith organized several events that were successful with volunteer support and the support of the local biker community. The group held a Spaghetti Dinner, A Car and Bike Show and The 3rd Annual Ride and Event.

Their 3rd Annual Ride held on July 30th started at Muenchen’s Furniture Store in Amelia and then traveled to Snapper’s in Ripley, OH with the final destination and main event being held along the Ohio River in New Richmond, OH. There were many vendors, food trucks, raffles, silent auctions and gift baskets. Multiple bands and musicians donated their time to play for the crowds including Ronnie Vaughn, Kaeli Paige Spurlock, Black Pharaoh, Ron Fletcher & Southern Edge Band, Taylor Shannon and Sundae Drives. The accumulation of multiple events held by the group Harleys Against Heroin was dispersed to their beneficiaries on August 12, 2016. Three checks for the amount of $7,350 each were distributed to Safe Harbor of Hope, The Gateway House and Children’s Hospital for Babies Born Addicted. The group is a 501(c)3 non-profit group committed to raising funds to assist recovery facilities in treatment of care of individuals seeking help for their addictions. The organizers do not take a salary or stipend, all funds go the cause. For more information you can find them online at facebook.com/harleysagainstheroin. 67th Annual Devil’s Staircase

AMA PRO HILLCLIMB National Championship October 11, 2016 Oregonia, Ohio For generations, the hillclimb races in Oregonia have been a mainstay for the southern Ohio riding community. This will be the 67th year that top racers from across the country have traveled to the Dayton’s Motorcycle Club’s farm to challenge the hill and make it to the top as fast as they can, while remaining in control of their bikes. It’s an adrenaline charged event that draws from throughout the Midwest, as spectators come to witness the brave / crazed racers rocket up the hill. And the excitement isn’t just limited to the racers – at the end of the day, one lucky person in the crowd will win a band new 2016 INDIAN SCOUT courtesy of Indian of Columbus.

54

In addition to all the excitement on the hill, there are vendors and plenty of other things to do while attending this single day event. Race organizers have again expanded the vending area and updated the layout to allow for more convenient flow through the exhibitors. The Bike Show and DYNO RACES (New this year!) offer even more for folks to do while attending the event.

LAST YEAR’S RACES John Koester took the Unlimited Class Championship and racked up wins in both expert classes at the 66th running of the Devil’s Staircase Hillclimb, hosted by the Dayton Motorcycle Club. Phil Libhart dedicated his championship win in the Xtreme Class to his late brother and fellow John Koester – Unlimited Class (c), hillclimber, Todd Libhart. Nick Briggs Phil Libhart – Xtreme Class (r) and clinched the championship in the Pro Nick Briggs – Pro Sport Class (l) Sport Class in his rookie year. Pro Sport riders tackled the hill first with Joseph Lowe setting the pace at 9.524 seconds. Briggs topped the hill in 9.507 seconds for the lead, momentarily. Luke Cipala set the only sub-nine second time, at 8.898 seconds, in his Pro Sport debut for the lead after one run. Another newcomer, Joe McGurer, rode last and wedged into second with a 9.358-second E.T. On their second attempts in Pro Sport, only Briggs set a faster pace and that not enough to move up the podium steps. Briggs’ third place finish, one place ahead of his rival- Lowe, was enough to hold the points lead and win the series Pro Sport crown. Eddie Capelli finished third in points for the series.

Phil Libhart launches off the second jump at Oregonia. He won the Xtreme Class

56

The Xtreme Class led off with the

newcomer- Logan Cipala cresting the hill at a 7.173-second pace. Robby DeBusk rode next, cresting in 7.027 seconds. Libhart rode third and was the first rider in the sixes with a 6.890-second E.T. Jay Sallstrom followed up with a 6.988-second ridea tenth off the pace. Riding mid-order, reigning champion, Koester dropped a 6.837-second ride for the lead. Late in the order, Vinny Nuzzolilli posted a 7.103-second E.T., fast, but not enough for the podium. Koester waited out the second half of the Xtreme Class but the podium

positions remained unchangedKoester, Libhart, Sallstrom, in order. Libhart’s second place finish on the day was enough to hold off Koester’s defense of his 2014 title by just one point. Sallstrom finished the series in third place. Logan Cipala also led off the Unlimited Class, setting a 7.298-second pace. Matt Luna shaved off 45 thousandths to move ahead. Libhart moved into the sixes again, posting a 6.753-second E.T. Nuzzolilli and Sallstrom took up spots just behind Libhart with times of 6.844 and 6.880 seconds, respectively. Koester rode last in order but jumped to the front of the pack with a 6.700-second ride. Koester again waited out the second half and did not have to ride as no one bested his time. The order of the top Unlimited riders didn’t change either, with Libhart in second and Nuzzolilli in third flanking Koester on the podium. Koester held a thee-point lead over 2014 Unlimited Champ, Sallstrom coming into the final round. Koester’s win, his fourth in a row, was more than enough for the

Apparently stiffer competition requires even stiffer suspension. Exhibition Hill-Cross was dominated by the Cipalas with Luke winning the first heat and Logan the third. Koester took the win in heat number 2. Logan Cipala took the win in the final, followed by Koester and Luke Cipala, second and third, respectively. 10 Reasons Why Street Riders Should Ride in the Dirt By Ken Condon, RidingInTheZone.com

You’ve probably heard people say that dirt riding can help improve a road rider’s skill, but can it really make you a safer and more competent street rider? The answer is yes.

1. Improved TractionSense Managing traction is one of the highest priorities for any motorcycle rider, whether on street or off-road. Dirt riding provides ample opportunities to learn about traction management as the tires hunt for grip on unpredictable surfaces. Having your motorcycle move around beneath you is disconcerting for street riders who are new to this sensation, but it helps you learn about traction management, including which inputs help and which hurt traction.

A fun way to become a better rider.

And this experience translates to street riding. Imagine yourself suddenly feeling your tires sliding as you roll over a wet surface or a bit of sand in a corner. Imagine your bike feeling like it is falling out from underneath you. Most street riders will panic, flinch and tense on the handlebars. This often makes matters worse. With dirt riding experience, you are more likely to recover from a relatively minor slip instead of panicking and gripping the bars in fear. Previous experience can allow you to stay composed and relaxed so your inputs remain fluid, allowing the tires a chance to regain grip.

2. Clutch and Throttle Control Throttle, clutch and brake control become very important when your tires are skipping over tree roots and wet rocks or through deep sand and gravel. But, you may not realize just how important fine clutch and throttle control affects a street rider’s confidence.

One thing you’ll learn is traction management.

By perfectly timing clutch release and throttle application, you manage lean angle, traction and direction control. This is especially noticeable when downshifting as you enter a slow turn. If you downshift as you begin to tip into a turn, you must feed the clutch out smoothly to avoid abrupt driveline lash that can disrupt traction and direction control.

You’re going to get dirty. 58 58

3. Slow Speed Skills Off-road riding typically includes a lot of slow speed maneuvering, which means that your sense of balance at slow speeds will increase greatly. Maneuvering slowly over rough or loose terrain requires steady, smooth power delivery. This often means slipping the clutch to control the power and prevent instability and unwanted direction changes. Yet another reason why masterful use of the clutch is so important for precise control of forward drive, both on and off road.

4. Balance and Body Position Because a lot of off-road riding is done at slow speeds over uneven surfaces, maintaining balance is a constant issue. The technique for maneuvering any motorcycle at slow speeds is to counterweight so that the motorcycle leans independently of your upper body. Counterweighting keeps the center of gravity over the tire contact area to maintain grip when traction is low. Riding a lightweight dirt bike means that much more of the steering is done with the footpegs and body. By positioning your body forward, rearward and side to side, you influence direction control .

You learn slow speed maneuvers and balance.

You’ll need to learn to ride while standing on the footpegs to allow your legs to act as shock absorbers. This can be tiring at first, until you learn the proper “neutral” position that keeps your bodyweight over the balance point of the bike, usually over the front of the fuel tank, knees slightly bent and elbows out. On the street, you use many of these techniques as you cross speed bumps, railroad tracks or when ascending or descending steep hills at slow speeds.

5. Throttle and Brake Steering Another important thing to learn when dirt riding is how to use the throttle and rear brake to change direction by breaking the rear tire loose under acceleration or when braking. It’s scary at first, but once you learn these techniques, your confidence will grow quickly. On the street, you will have a better sense of how the throttle can help “finish” a turn or how deceleration and brake force can alter your cornering line. Motorcycle dynamics are similar enough between lightweight, off-road bikes and heavy street bikes for this skill to transfer.

6. Improved Brake Control The front brake offers the most braking power whether riding on or off road, however the rear brake becomes more important when riding in the dirt. When traction is low, the amount of brake force is minimized and load transfer that pitches the bike forward is reduced, which means that the rear of the bike remains more planted for more effective rear brake power.

59 59

9. Learn to Fall Down

Another reason to favor the rear brake is to avoid a front tire skid, which must be avoided if you want to remain on two wheels. Loose surfaces are unpredictable, so it’s best to apply more rear brake pressure and modulate the front brake to avoid a skid.

You won’t likely become a texting teenager’s hood ornament when riding off-road, but there is still significant risk. Even though crashes are usually less serious, the frequency of tip overs tends to be higher when off-road riding. Typical injuries usually consist of bumps, bruises and perhaps a torn ligament or broken bone if you’re unlucky. Because of these challenges, you should not ride alone without the help of someone to come to the rescue if necessary.

On the street, you learn that there are times when you favor the rear brake a bit more. Riding with a passenger and descending a gravel road are two instances that come to mind.

7. Improved Visual Skills

Learning to fall is not usually something I emphasize. Instead, I prefer to teach people how NOT to fall. But, there is something beneficial about being familiar with hitting the deck that can potentially help you if you were to crash on the street, such as trying to relax (yeah, right) or keeping arms tucked in if you tumble. Think of sports players who learn to fall without injury; This translates directly to street riding. Nervous riders look down, that’s the theory. which leads to higher perceived speeds, and more panic as hazards seem to appear “out of nowhere”. Eyes Up! 10. Gain a New Respect for Riding Gear Off-road riding requires keen vision. One of the keys to a successful off-road outing is the ability to identify the best line through a rocky or sandy trail or fire road so that you find the best available traction. A common problem that new riders have is their inability to keep their eyes well ahead, scanning for the ideal line.

8. Better Fitness Riding on the street can be tiring and can make you sore. But, that doesn’t mean you’re getting into shape. If you want to increase muscle tone and strength, get yourself off-road. The act of balancing a motorcycle over rough terrain is one of the best workouts you’ll experience. Bring a hydration system…you’ll need it.

Whether riding on the street or off-road, it’s important to reduce the likelihood of injury and this means wearing protection. No sane person I know would hit the trails without full protection. I’ve seen too many riders fall down and get a rock in the ribs or a stick in the chest to not wear full gear. Not to mention bruised ankles and nasty rash. And that is falling at under 20 mph. You know what happens if you were to hit pavement at 40 mph with inadequate clothing…not pretty. ATGATT, people.

Get Dirty, Skillfully With good skills, falling can be minimized. But for many, tipovers are a reality when riding off-road, which means you must manage the risks. Don’t take your safety for granted. Learn to ride well! Prepare your mind with an attitude toward reducing risk and protect your body with proper riding gear. There is a lot more to learn about off road riding. Understand that just because you can ride a street bike does not mean that you can swing a leg over a dual-purpose bike and safely hit the trails. But, it is well worth the effort.

There’s nothing like being in nature while learning to be a better rider at the same time.

In The Wind I

just recently took a road trip with my Club Brothers. The weather from Florida to North Carolina was Hot and Sunny. It’s about a 10-hour trip on the bike from where I live to where I was going. You know those funny stories about someone who had nothing but trouble getting to this party or that event. Well, that was me, and It’s not funny when it happens to you! Lol! About 7 hours into the trip the old HD decided to drop all voltage. Thankfully I carry AAA Auto Club Motorcycle Coverage, so after waiting at a gas station for about 2 hours for a tow truck, I was towed to Fraizer’s Harley Davidson in Buford Georgia. I had called ahead and spoke to Service Writer “David” and Service Manager “Greg”. Let me tell you something, this Dealership knows how to treat a Brother broke down on a road trip. Not only did they wait for me past the official closing time on a Friday evening when the tow truck took its merry time getting there, but they personally gave me a ride to the nearest hotel, and got me first on the rack at 9:00 am when they opened Saturday morning. Within an hour the bike had a new Regulator and a new battery, and I was back on the road. I rode another 115 miles

to my destination, partied with my crew, and left the next day for home. Well, another 300 miles down the road and guess what? Yup, Broke down again. Same type of issue. Now some of you might want to blame my new Buds at Fraizer’s Harley Davidson, but alas, the cause of the voltage drop issue did mess up the regulator. So I was fortunate enough to be 20 miles from Tifton Harley Davidson. Lol. Good grief man, enough was enough. I blasted down the highway with engine & battery light a blazing on the dash, and made it there just before closing. Again, Excellent treatment, a ride to a local restaurant, and tons of respect. Unfortunately, after researching a potential issue, they had to order the part so I had to leave it and get the Ole Lady to drive 3 ½ hours to pick me up, then I had a return trip of 7 hours to pick it up the next weekend.

The point is, it happens. If you’re going to get out and actually ride your motorcycle, this kind of stuff will and does happen. Get over it. For the 1000 times you ride with no issues, there will be a few with issues. It’s a part of what we do. I for one was very happy that Harley Dealers get it, or at least the two I visited. People can say what they want, but these guys are Bikers, and they know how to treat Bikers. Much appreciation to ya! Now for a change. I’ve been writing this column for about 4 years. I have not always had the popular opinion with some, but I have always connected with many. I really just started it to educate the masses regarding MC Life and Club Protocols. I think it’s time for a new perspective. I have asked a Good Brother of mine, who’s Road name is “Tattoo” to pick up the column going forward. We have been friends and club brothers for quite a while, and he gets it. He totally gets it. And I think he has some things to teach. So we’re going to let this thing Fly and see where it goes. I may pop in from time to time with an article or a bitch or observation, if you’ve read my column as I know many of you have for years, you know I like sharing my own opinion. LOL! So as always, please respect and carry on the MC & Biker Code, and always, always Keep It REAL! I will see you in the wind my friends! My Road Name is “Tabasco”, and I still approve this message! BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Trump vs. Hillary on Gun Rights by Dean Rieck Just in case there is any confusion over possible outcomes for the 2016 presidential election, either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will be our next President and Commander in Chief. Yes, others will be on the ballot, including Libertarian and Green Party nominees, but they have no chance of winning. So let’s not kid ourselves. If you’re a gun owner and you’re evaluating how to vote, these are the candidates you need to look at closely. If you’re not happy with these choices, you can refuse to vote. But that just lets others, who may be less-informed, make the choice for you. You cannot wash your hands of eleciton results. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. So let’s take a look at Trump and Clinton and where they stand on your gun rights. The following information is presented without comment. Just the facts. I’ve summarized the proposals of each as objectively as possible, and you can check the candidates’ websites for the full text.

the government can’t take it away. Our Founding Fathers knew, and our Supreme Court has upheld, that the Second Amendment’s purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families. This is about self-defense, plain and simple. “It’s been said that the Second Amendment is America’s first freedom. That’s because the Right to Keep and Bear Arms protects all our other rights. We are the only country in the world that has a Second Amendment. Protecting that freedom is imperative.” Enforce the laws on the books by prosecuting violent criminals and empowering law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves. Fix our broken mental health system by expanding treatment programs and getting violent people off the street. Defend the rights of gun owners by: Allowing law-abiding people to own the firearm of their choice instead of demonizing popular rifles and standard magazines owned by millions of Americans. Fixing the background check system so that it includes criminal and mental health records and is instant, accurate, and fair. Making concealed carry permits valid in all 50 states because bearing arms is a right, not a privilege. Allowing those in the military to defend themselves by carrying firearms on bases and at recruiting centers.

History: http://www.ontheissues.org/Donald_ Trump.htm#Gun_Control  Mass shootings are due to a huge mental health problem. (Jan 2016)  No limits on guns; they save lives. (Jan 2016)  Keep enemies of the state away from guns. (Nov 2015)  Make concealed-carry permits valid across all states. (Nov 2015)  Gun-free zones are target practice for sickos. (Oct 2015)  Gun ownership makes US safer, not more dangerous. (Oct 2015)  Mental health more important than gun control. (Oct 2015)  Laws are ineffective in preventing gun violence. (Oct 2015)  Gun violence is inevitable; regulations won’t help. (Oct 2015)  Protect the Second Amendment, but address mental health. (Sep 2015)  Take guns from good people & bad people have target practice. (Jul 2015)  A very strong person on the Second Amendment. (Jun 2015)  I am against gun control. (Feb 2011)  Dems and Reps are both wrong on guns. (Jul 2000)  For assault weapon ban, waiting period, & background check. (Jul 2000) Endorsements: National Rifle Association, International Defensive Pistol Association

Donald Trump Statement and Proposals: https://www.donaldjtrump.com/ positions/second-amendment-rights “The Second Amendment to our Constitution is clear. The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon. Period. “The Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law-abiding Americans. The Constitution doesn’t create that right – it ensures that

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT

Hillary Clinton Statement and Proposals: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/ gun-violence-prevention/ “I believe weapons of war have no place on our streets. We may have our disagreements on gun safety regulations, but we should all be able to agree on a few things. If the FBI is watching you for suspected terrorist links, you shouldn’t be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked. You shouldn’t be able to exploit loopholes and evade criminal background checks by buying online or at a gun show. And yes, if you’re too dangerous to get on a plane, you are too dangerous to buy a gun in America.” Expand background checks by forcing personal gun transfers to go through a licensed dealer, requiring dealers to deny gun sales for an indefinite period when there is a delay in any background check, use administrative action to lower the threshold for classifying individuals as “dealers.” Punish businesses for crimes committed with their products by allowing lawsuits against gun dealers and manufacturers and increasing the budget for BATFE to conduct more dealer inspections and encourage more license revocations. Prohibit more gun purchases by expanding “domestic abuse” laws to include those dating or those convicted of stalking, making straw purchases a federal crime (note: it already is), prohibiting those receiving mental treatment from buying guns, and banning so-called “assault” weapons.

68

History: http://www.ontheissues.org/Hillary_ Clinton.htm#Gun_Control  I support Brady Bill and closing the Charleston loophole. (Dec 2015)  Arming more people is not appropriate response to terrorism. (Dec 2015)  Reverse gun manufacturer immunity; let them get sued. (Nov 2015)  Don’t shield gun manufacturers from lawsuits: I vote that way. (Oct 2015)  Sensible restraints on manufacturer liability & online sales. (Oct 2015)  Gun control advocates see Clinton as an ally. (Jun 2015)  Rein in idea that anybody can have a gun anywhere, anytime. (May 2014)  2000: advocate for national gun registry; 2008: backed off. (May 2014)  Balance lawful gun ownership & keeping guns from criminals. (Apr 2008)  Give local police access to federal gun tracking info. (Apr 2008)  Let states & cities determine local gun laws. (Apr 2008)  Against illegal guns, crack down on illegal gun dealers. (Jan 2008)  Backed off a national licensing registration plan on guns. (Jan 2008)

(Sep 1996)  Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers. (Jul 2005)  Voted NO on banning lawsuits against gun manufacturers for gun violence. (Mar 2004)  Prevent unauthorized firearm use with “smart gun” technology. (Aug 2000)

DIY: Ethanol Free Gas Mark The GoldWing Doc

somewhere where air can get in, like a normal vented gas tank, the volatile portion of the fuel will eventually evaporate. What’s left is a milky goo. This goo eventually hardens into an amber solid, which then cracks into tiny pieces - heading directly into your carburetor to clog jets and cause failures.

Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Goldwingdocs.com Ethanol is the scourge of owners of motorcycles, boats, and many other gasolineoperated vehicles and implements. E10 (10% ethanol) is pretty much the only available gasoline in most of the country now, with a few stations offering ethanolEthanol IS NOT intended free gas. And E15 (15% ethanol) is for motorcycles. coming soon, recently approved by the EPA for 2001 and newer cars even though the car manufacturers don’t want it, and it is not approved for use by any motorcycle manufacturer either. You can thank the ethanol lobby for that.

Two stroke engines definitely have problems with E10: ethanol breaks down the lubrication provided by the fuel/oil mixture, leading to engine seizures!

“E15 won’t be a problem - I’ll just select my regular E10 on the pump,” you may say. Well, there is a problem - the pipes and hose of the fuel pump contain about 3/4 gallon of whatever was last dispensed - and that could be E15. 3/4 gallon isn’t much when you’re pumping 15 gallons into your car, but when you’re only pumping a few gallons into your bike, which doesn’t like ethanol to begin with, 3/4 gallon makes a big difference! What’s the problem with ethanol? The biggest problem is phase separation. Like brake fluid, ethanol is hygroscopic, which means it bonds very easily to water. If there is moisture in the air (which there always is), the moisture bonds with the ethanol. The combination of water and ethanol is heavier than gasoline, so it falls to the bottom of the gas tank, where the pickup is. Let your bike sit for any length of time, particularly with a partially-full gas tank (because the air space left will contain moisture, and will expand and contract with heat, sucking in more moisture-laden air), and your tank will have a layer of water/ethanol mixture on the bottom. This is called phase separation. Guess what gets sucked into your engine the next time you start it? The water/ ethanol mixture will burn in your engine, but it will burn much leaner and hotter, with the potential for serious engine damage as a result. Ethanol is particularly corrosive to plastics, rubber, aluminum and fiberglass when compared to straight gasoline. If you have a vintage bike with a fiberglass tank, and are running E10 gasoline in it, the tank is likely swollen and on its way to failure as the ethanol breaks down the fiberglass. Many bikes have developed leaks and problems from swollen gaskets and failed rubber hoses and seals, all as a result of E10. When E10 is allowed to sit for a long time, particularly 80

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

So what is the solution? Well, you can check out the web site http://pure-gas.org to try to find a gas station near you that sells ethanol-free gas. Hint: many boat marinas sell ethanol-free gas, because with the added moisture in a boating environment, E10 The water and Ethanol plays havoc with boat engines. automatically separates itself out from the gas..

Or...you can make your own ethanol-free gas. Yes, you heard me right! Make it yourself! I never even thought about doing this, until I read the excellent article “Removing Ethanol from E10 Fuel” by Dave Searle in the December 2012 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News - my absolute favorite magazine. If you haven’t got a subscription to this magazine yet, stop reading this right now and go subscribe! I promise you won’t be sorry. I’ve using a few pictures from Dave’s article in this article. So as you can guess, you don’t actually make your own gasoline, you take regular E10 gasoline and remove the ethanol. Because ethanol boosts the octane in gasoline, I recommend you start with premium gas. Removing the ethanol from the premium will in the process lower the octane to the equivalent of regular gas. If you start with regular E10, you will need to add an octane booster, available at any auto store, or Wal-Mart. So how do you remove the ethanol from E10? It’s quite simple, actually - just add water! Remember, ethanol binds strongly to water. All you need to do is add some water to the gasoline, agitate to make sure it mixes well, then let it sit for a few minutes. The water will bond with the ethanol, and it will phase-separate out, falling to the bottom of the container. How much water do you add? Well you can’t add too much. If you don’t add enough, then it won’t remove all of the E10, and what E10 does bond with the water, will separate to the bottom of

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

your container. If you add too much, the available ethanol will bond to the water, and the remaining water will separate to the bottom. You’ll then have three layers: gasoline on top, ethanol/water in the middle, and water on the bottom (see the picture).

In Dave’s article, he used a cheap plastic separatory funnel with a small valve at the bottom, along with a 500cc cylinder for measuring the fuel and a 25cc burette for measuring water:

To the end of the spout, glue several inches of large, transparent PVC pipe:

At the end of the PVC pipe, fasten a valve with a compression fitting:

Once filling his funnel with E10, adding water and letting it sit, the water/ ethanol separated out, and could be drained using the valve: So how much water do you add? It depends on a few things, including the actual concentration of ethanol (which will vary it’s seldom exactly 10%), and ambient temperature. Dave’s testing shows that the optimal amount of water is 2% by volume of the E10. That’s 2.56 oz per gallon, or 12.8 ounces for a five-gallon gas can. Remember that extra water will simply separate out, so two cups (16 ounces) of water in a fivegallon gas can is safe. You should use distilled water only, to avoid leaving behind any minerals or other additives that your engine may not like (does fluoride keep your carburetors clean?).

Fill the can with E10, add two cups of distilled water, fasten the spout/ pipe/valve, shake well, then turn the gas can upside down - fit it in a sawhorse or some other fixture so that the PVC pipe is pointing straight down. You want the absolute lowest point of the gas can to be the outlet for the spout, so that all of the heavier water and ethanol/water moves out the spout and then into the PVC tubing. Wait for the ethanol/water to separate out and drop down into the PVC (you’ll see it), then open the valve slightly to drain out the ethanol/water. Once it’s drained out, turn the gas can back upright - and you’re done!

The biggest problem - in what sort of container do you perform this procedure? Dave suggested a five-gallon glass or PET plastic jugs, like those that are found at http://www. midwestsupplies.com - fitted with stopcocks and vent tubes. My suggestion is a bit simpler: Buy a regular five-gallon gas can:

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

So do you want to do this every time you fill up your bike? Probably not. But it’s certainly doable for small batches of gasoline for use in small engines (lawn mowers, weed trimmers, any twostroke engine), to put in your bike just before putting it away for the winter (or for storage of any length of time), or for putting into devices that sit for long periods of time without being run - like backup generators. RECIPES

Hot n Cheesy Taco Dip

Well its that time of year again when pumpkins are being carved and scooped and put on he porch, but dont waste those yummy seeds!!!! This is my families favorite recipe heck we buy pumpkins just to dig out the seeds lol

½ pound ground beef ½ tbsp Taco Seasoning 2 tbsp water 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature ½ cup sour cream ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 cup salsa ½ cup jack cheese, shredded ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1 cup lettuce, finely shredded (optional) 1 tomato, finely diced (optional) 1 avocado, finely diced (optional) 2 tbsp sliced black olives (optional) 1 handful cilantro (optional)

Spicy Pumpkin Seeds

2 cups pumpkin seeds, rinsed and dry ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon cayenne powder 1 tsp olive oil •

Preheat oven to 375-degrees F.

In a bowl combine all ingredients until seed are coated well.

Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake until toasted and slightly browned, about 15-20 minutes, tossing halfway through. Watch carefully to avoid burning as all ovens vary on cook times. Remove from oven, and let cool before serving.

• Brown the ground beef in a pan, drain the grease add the taco seasoning and water, mix and simmer until the water evaporates.Mix the beef, cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, salsa and cheeses in a large bowl, reserving some of the cheese. • Pour the mixture into a baking dish and top with the reserved cheese.

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! -The Iron Cowboy

• Bake in a preheated 350F oven until it is bubbling on the sides and golden brown on top, about 20-30 minutes. Optionally serve topped with fresh shredded lettuce, tomato, avocado, olives and cilantro

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

The Nun Fantasy A nun gets into a cab and notices that the driver can’t stop staring at her. So she asks him why is he staring and he answers, “I have a question I need to ask you but I don’t want to offend you.” The nun replies, “My dear son, you cannot offend me. When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you have had a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.” The cab driver hesitates for a moment and then says, “Well it’s like this; I’ve always had a fantasy to have sex with me.” The nun replies, “Ok well, let’s see what we can do about that, shall we. There are two conditions though – firstly you have to be single and secondly you must be Catholic.” The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, yes! I am single and I’m Catholic too!” The nun then says, “Ok then, pull into the next alley.” The cab driver does so and the nun duly goes ahead and fulfills his fantasy. They get back on the road and start driving again, but the cab driver soon starts to cry. The nun sees this and asks him, “My dear child, pray tell, why are you crying?” The cab driver says, “You must forgive me sister, but I have sinned. I lied to you – I must confess that I’m married and I’m also Jewish.”

In Laws Last Halloween there was a knock on the door. I looked out of the window and then shouted upstairs to my wife, “Honey there’s a witch at the door. What shall I do?” She shouted back, “Just give her some candy and tell her to get lost.” My mother-in-law hasn’t spoken to me since.

Reality I’m not saying my wife is ugly… but on Halloween she went to tell the neighbors to turn their TV down and they gave her some candy.

The nun laughs and says, “That’s OK, my name is Kevin and I’m on my way to a Halloween party.”
