FROM THE PUBLISHER No offense to July or August, but October is easily my favorite time to ride in Ohio. Cooler crisp air, the changing leaves, and just a more relaxed pace makes it my favorite time of year to get out and explore back roads and discover new stops. It’s also time for the 69th Annual Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Races – or HILLCLIMB WEEKEND as it’s now known! The traditional WORLD FAMOUS PARTY ON THE HILL officially adds an extra day to the festivities with an “old school” field meet to kick things off on Saturday. Of course, Thunder Roads Ohio will be there for this traditional end of season homecoming for us in Southern Ohio. It’s a great chance for our big extended TRO FAMILY to get together and celebrate brotherhood and share stories of the road – with two wheeled mayhem in the background! (See page 38). Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is a grass roots organization – a family owned business that is a collaboration of writers, photographers, road reps, and other contributors from across the state and from as far away as Australia! TRO is a celebration of the motorcycle community and the lifestyle we love. Freedom, brotherhood, and a passion for the open road – it all comes together in our pages and digital efforts. We support the local riding community through hundreds of local rides, bikes nights, and other get togethers. We work with local and national businesses to deliver the information that riders need in order to stay informed and get together. It’s not about one bike or a cliché perpetuated by out of touch media or even those that work in the industry – but just don’t quite get it. It’s about understanding that we are all in this journey together, and when we get out on the open road – it doesn’t matter what you ride or who you are 9 to 5, but more about the fact that you’re there and a kindred spirit. As the temperatures drop and we throw on the extra layers and leathers, it’s important to take advantage of these final days before the snow flies. There’s still plenty of time to get out there and ride, and plenty of great events such as the Devil’s Staircase, or any number of Covered Bridge Runs all across the state, but it’s easy to get caught up in other distractions and suddenly find salt and ice on the roads. I love the life we live and the brotherhood I share with riders all across the state and even the country. As always, I’m thankful for your support which allows us to do the work we do. Thank you – and I hope to see you out on the road this Fall or possibly at the bottom of the hill in Oregonia (The Devil’s Staircase)! Until then – safe travels! Derek

NOW BOOKING FOR 2019 EVENTS! JOIN THE TEAM This year has been an amazing one for the TRO Team as we hosted a record number of TRO Bike Shows, Tattoo Contests, and other events all across Ohio. Over 1,000 bikes, trikes, and a few cages participated in TRO EVENTS in 2018 – with THOUSANDS more attending and cheered on! As the season went on and we held more and more events, we tweaked things and the shows evolved – getting bigger and better along the way! For 2019, we plan on hosting a few earlier Bike Shows in April and May – as preliminary qualifiers for our Invitational Championship Bike Show as part of Ohio

Bike Week. These shows will be weather contingent, but there are obviously plenty of great riding days early in the season. If we need, we can postpone – but our hope is that we will get a lot of interest from folks itching to get out and take advantage of these last chances to qualify for the BIG BLOW OUT Ohio Bike Week Show! For information on hosting a Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show, Tattoo Contest, Photo Shoot / Calendar Contest, or other event at your location – email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

Thunder Roads Ohio is actively looking to add Road Reps, Promotional Staff, Contributors, Photographers, and Area Managers all across Ohio. Thunder Roads Ohio is a grassroots organization that works with local representatives to help cover and serve the motorcycle community. Customs, Classics, and Cages! - Sassy’s Bike / Car Show At this year’s Sassys Car & Bike Show, we added a special new class to our show – CAGES! While we certainly focus on bikes in our shows, the reality is that 99% of us also have a four wheeled vehicle that gets us around when a bike just doesn’t suffice. There are also a lot of folks that have a hot rod or other classic car sharing space with our bikes in the garage! When it boils down – a gear-head is a gear-head… (for the most part ) So, we added a CAGE class to the bike show – and it really was a good time. We saw a lot of new folks and discovered that many of our TRO folks had some cool rides at home as well! So for 2019, we will be adding a number of CUSTOMS, CLASSICS, AND CAGES® Shows to our schedule! As with all our shows, the schedule and availability of dates is the big challenge – as we will continue to try and balance things across the State. We are also limited by the fact that we generally can only be in two or three places at once… (or at least it just seems that way) For information on hosting a CUSTOMS, CLASSICS, and CAGES® or motorcycle only TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES EVENT at your location or through your organization – email us at BikeShowInfo@ gmail.com

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

Website Feature: The Thunder Roads Ohio Blog Navigating the blog to find your favorite article topics

Option 1: Main Navigation Drop Down

This month’s website feature focuses on how to navigate our online blog to find your favorite article categories. Here at Thunder Roads we know and understand that some of our reader’s favorite topics are our monthly “Final Word” and “Sport Touring” articles and we want to make sure that you can easily find them online. The blog section of our Thunder Roads Ohio website contains multiple categories corelating to article topics that are featured in the magazine each month and its currently one of the most visited sections of our website due to the early release of magazine articles there. We typically post articles on the website 2-3 weeks prior to the new magazine going to print, so it is the best place to stay ahead of what is to come in the next month’s magazine. The other great feature about the blog is the ability you have as a reader to comment on each and every article! The comments section on the blog posts gives you the ability to respond directly with article writers, and other readers who have the same interest as you. You also have the ability in this section to ask readers and writers questions about the article or to share similar experiences that you may have. Each month the TRO staff selects one article’s comment section and gives away a small prize to a contributor there. This may be for the best question asked, best similar experience, best route recommended; it all depends on the subject matter of the article written. We announce each month on Social Media which article’s comment section will be eligible for a prize.

Join the TRO DIGITAL CREW!

There are currently two ways to navigate the blog to locate your favorite article topics and stay ahead of the magazine. The first way is pretty simple. When you first land on to the Thunder Roads Ohio’s website homepage you will see a main navigation bar, this is where you will see menu items such as: Our Events, Our Magazine, Classifieds, and the Blog. If you take your cursor and hover over “Blog”, you will see a drop-down menu appear. This drop-down menu will give you the choice of navigating to all blogs, Final Word blogs or Sport Touring blogs. All blogs will take you to a section that has all the blogs we have ever posted and is sorted by most recent at the top and oldest at the bottom. Clicking on either “Final Word” or “Sport Touring” will navigate you to pages that only have blogs that match those categories.

Option 2: Using Category Selectors The second way to find articles that fit the topics you are interested in, is to use the category selectors at the top of the main blog page. To do this you would first select “All Blogs” from the main navigation bar. Then you will be directed to a page that has all our blogs sorted by most recent at the top. Above the first post you will see buttons that look like the image below with all our blog categories listed.

This would be a great way to navigate to your favorite blog topic if it is not on the main navigation drop down. For example: Selecting the topic “BTR” will show you all the blogs in that category like our monthly BTR winners posts, or you could select one of our newest categories “Amish Rider” and see our most recent articles. for the Amish Country Rider category. 10

Thunder Roads Ohio reaches hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts every week – and we continue to expand our reach through our social media and websites every day! As such, we have an immediate need for TRO DIGITAL CREW members to help us continue to develop our online presence. You don’t have to be a programmer or have any technical experience at all – just a love of riding and the ability to navigate social media and websites. Most of these positions are primarily work from home, part time opportunities – and you can even make some serious money from them, if you’d like! You’ll need a computer and internet access, but that’s about it in terms of requirements. It’s perfect work for those watching kids at home, retired, students, or those looking for a fun side gig that they can do odd hours. We are looking for positive, responsible people that are able to work on things on their own – and follow up as needed. You need to be reliable in terms of your commitments, and be able to effectively communicate online. There is some mandatory training at our Home Office in Burton, Ohio – but we are flexible in terms of when those sessions are being held. For more information, email us at Acct. TRO@gmail.com We have an immediate need and are scheduling training sessions for early October. If you’re interested – get in touch, today!

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES octobER Update! The vast majority of these shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include the “people’s choice” as well as a professional eye – preventing it just being a popularity contest. Some shows, though, are Judged Shows – with the guest votes simply going towards the People’s Choice Awards.

All Thunder Roads Shows feature trophies and placards to recognize the bikes and winners, with special prizes being added in some shows in consideration of the location and hosts. The Best of Show Bikes and TOP Class Winners from the Bike Show Series are then invited to take part in the Championship Shows.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Hi to All My Friends, For many years my goal has been to lower motorcycle crashes with awareness, safety and education, and most of the time I feel successful. Then we have a year that it just seems that we are not getting the message out. So far this year the message is being heard so we need to keep getting that message out. This is the time of year that our stats like to go up because many riders lose the ability to make wise decisions that has kept them out of trouble for the year. Remember to “Ride SMART” - Ride SOBER, Ride MOTORCYCLE ENDORSED, Ride ALERT, Ride RIGHT GEAR, Ride TRAINED. Now for the stats to the middle of September 2018: Motorcycle crashes 2,463, deaths 103 and injuries 2,000. For 2017: Motorcycle crashes 3,002, deaths 120 and injuries 2513. Thankfully they are down but I hope everyone keeps their guard up and RIDE SMART. Just a couple more things to look at: The driver of a motorcycle is at fault 56.1% of the time, non-motorcycle is 34.8% and animals 4.7%. Remember this is the time of year that deer are moving around, especially at dusk and dawn.

red arrow (the road guard bill) so we can road guard legally and profiling has been looked at and may be introduced later. On the Federal level, E15 fuel keeps coming up and the MRF is in every meeting to make sure motorcycles are being taken into consideration. Automated cars will always be in our radar and we need them to keep us in their radar. With more and more highways being set up to test autonomous cars, we need to ensure the cars will be able to see motorcycles. This is the 40th year ABATE of Ohio has been representing Ohio motorcyclists. Please support us by joining. The special this year to be a member is $10.00 and with membership you get a $3500.00 accidental death insurance policy, an electronic magazine (a paper magazine is available for an additional $10) and you are represented at the Ohio State House by ABATE of Ohio. To join call 1-800-25-BIKER or go online at ABATE.com

This is a good time of year to contact Motorcycle Ohio and take a training class, either a basic or an advanced class. You can use what you have experienced out on the road and learn to handle the challenges better. In the advanced class you ride your own bike and it is a one-day class. Contact Motorcycle.Ohio.Gov.

Ride Within Your Limits Mike Stock Chairman of the Board chairofboard@abate.com

We are packing up and getting ready for our annual trip to the Meeting of The Minds put on by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, this year in Denver, Colorado. At this seminar, all the state motorcycle rights organizations come together for an educational weekend. The MRF represents motorcyclists’ rights at the Federal level. At the Meet and Greet we will share what Ohio is doing in our fight to keep riding FREE. I will be giving a report next month on the great wisdom that we absorbed. Who is ABATE of Ohio? First and foremost, we are a Motorcycle Organization working as one body throughout the state and with other states to preserve our rights, improve our motorcycle image and practice safe riding. We monitor legislative activity regarding laws affecting motorcycling, especially ones that affect our lifestyle and FREEDOM. Rob Dingman, President and CEO of AMA said “There are so many threats currently facing motorcycling. There are more nonmotorcyclists that don’t understand our lifestyle than there are those of us who ride. It stands to reason, then, that our interests are underserved in the U.S. Congress and other elected bodies across the country. It is easy to see how misguided laws can get enacted that adversely effect motorcycling.” And therefore, every motorcyclist needs to join a rights organization. Some things that are happening in government: The National Conference of State Legislators have on their agenda the possibility of a State Helmet Law which we are watching very closely. We are keeping an eye on the red-light bill that will allow motorcycles to move through a 16 16

CMA Do Not Lean on Your Own Understanding The title listed above can be found in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” NASB This passage has been explained by some in this way, “Leaning has the sense of putting your whole weight on something, resting on and trusting in that person or thing. When we have an important decision to make, we sometimes feel that we cannot trust anyone – not even God. But God knows what is best for us. He is a better judge of what we want than even we are! We must trust Him completely in every choice we make. We should not omit careful thinking or belittle our God-given ability to reason, but neither should we trust our own ideas to the exclusion of all others. We must not be wise in our own eyes. We should always be willing to listen to and be corrected by God’s word and wise counselors. Bring your decisions to God in prayer, use the Bible as your guide, and then follow God’s leading. He will make your paths straight by both guiding and protecting you.” Over the years I have made plans and thought I had everything all planned out, and I did. But, I have also found by eliminating or excluding God in the decision making I really failed myself. Case in point: In December of 2008 I accepted the appointment as CMA Ohio State Coordinator to start on January 1, 2009. It was an exciting time and I thought in 20 years I’ll be ready to step aside. As I have continued to grow in the Lord I have also found I need to “Listen” to the Lord as well as “Live” for the Lord. Then, when the Lord “Speaks” I not only need to listen but I need to allow what God has spoken to me about to be a guide to me, or, in other words, I need to act upon what God has revealed to me. Every year since accepting the position of CMA Ohio State Coordinator God has renewed our “Call” to be in that position and in the ministry of CMA. At the completion of 2018 we will have served 10 years as CMA Ohio State Coordinator. That’s 10 years short of my goal. But, we believe God has spoken by not renewing that call on our lives. Effective the end of December 2018, 10 years short of my personal goal, we will be stepping down as CMA Ohio State Coordinators. God has prepared, CMA Board of Directors have unanimously approved a couple to become our CMA Ohio State Coordinators. That is Rex & Mary Gilbert. Granted Becky & I go into this season of change with mixed emotions. But, we do not own this ministry called CMA. We are servants of the most-high God and we believe God’s plans are better than our plans. We believe He has “Spoken” and we must “Listen” and we must respond to His “Call”. With all that said, please welcome Rex & Mary Gilbert as our CMA Ohio State Coordinators. GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER! There are a couple of things that indicate our riding days will soon be over. Labor Day has come and gone. School is back in session. The noticeably shorter days. For us track days are nearly over. Road racing in our area is pretty close to being done for the season The end of August afforded us the closest venue to take in a MotoAmerica race at Pittsburgh International Raceway. And of course Thunder on the Strip in Geneva on the Lake. The weekend at PittRace was filled with what appeared to be record breaking crowds. Ohio and Pennsylvania have always supported pro motorcycle racing. From the days of competition at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to the new venue near Pittsburgh, motorcycle enthusiasts filled the hillside cheering on their favorites. Competitors did not disappoint as racing was close. And although friends that were

competing may have not had the finishes they hoped for watching someone you know adds to the excitement. This year’s Thunder on the Strip had arguably the best weather (with the exception of Sunday) in a very long time. The mix of sun and clouds made for some good riding. Plenty of entertainment with great bands, the burn out pit and vendors galore. And I know a good amount of bikers took in the countryside and sampled some fine Ohio wines and spirits. I know there are plenty of good riding days ahead but the days getting shorter remind us of what is ahead for those of us residing in Northeast Ohio. Take advantage of the riding time left.

My Space Bubble Keep out of my space. I say that easily 50 times a day when I’m riding. I can’t help it. I need room and time to be able to react and escape possible threats to my safety on the road. I need to leave room for other members of my group to be able to safely respond to what I am doing. So often I hear “It’s not the bike that scares me, it’s other people”. That statement rings loudly in my ears everytime my kickstand goes up. It runs through my mind until I put it back down at the end of the day. I constantly play the “what if?” game in my head. Wondering if that car will roll the stop sign, if that bicyclist will wander into my lane, if that dog will chase me, if that car approaching me from behind is texting someone and might rear-end me. It can be terrifying but one way to combat these fears is to create a

“space cushion” around myself; A safety bubble and room to react and escape. We all do it in our cars from being taught the 10 second rule or measuring distance by car lengths to keep us safe. The same should be applied as we ride our bikes. Even more so as we are so much less visible and so much more vulnerable than when we are in our cars. We all do our best to keep a safe following distance but what about beside and behind us? I feel it’s super important to always have 360 degrees of awareness and have that bubble all the way around. By myself and especially in group rides. I try my best to be mindful of my fellow riders so that I’m not in their space cushion. I try to leave them and myself lots of room. I have also learned to keep my lane position consistent. Especially rounding corners and leaving

intersections. So there is a common knowledge in my group that I will always be where I am supposed to be unless there is something in my path. I watch the other riders in my group hoping they will do the same. But in the event they do not, or their riding style is different than mine, I have my safety cushion to rely on and I am away from them as they drift in and out of my lane position as we travel through our ride day. I find my confidence is so much greater when I give myself the time, room and ability to avoid laying my pretty bike down, because you never want that to be your only option. Keep the shiny side up my friends. Marybeth Sullivan Motorcycle Ohio Rider Coach

MORE STOPS! MORE PRIZES! YEAR ROUND STOPS! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2018 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you win by simply getting out to ride!

HERE’s HOW YOU WIN!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Some will have Ride Stop Clipboard for you to sign in on. You simply have to write down your Ride Card #, your name, and your zip code. Most have moved to digital check-in’s, though. It’s quick and even easier – see below. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops!

Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard, just like a regular Ride Stop.

“MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP!” – NEW FOR 2018!

For 2018, we’ve added another option to WIN – by which Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! And it’s SIMPLE – 1. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AT THE LOCATION. 2. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER.

3. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #TRO 4. It’s that simple. FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS.

For more information, visit us online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com 24

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number on our website and sometimes in the magazine as well. both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in's for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long. • ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday) SOCIAL MEDIA WINNERS Each month, the TRO Crew will randomly select WINNERS that have checked in through their social media with the #TRO hashtag. If their Ride Card is visible, we will register the Card Number as a winner and possibly send notification through email. In most cases, though, we will contact through your social media and the winning post. Digital winners have 15 days to contact TRO in regards to the prizes. In some cases, there may be less time due to constraints regarding the prize(s) – such as tickets for a particular concert.

It's really that simple!

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Make sure you like us at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number!

Just Get Out and RIDE!

This is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

’Twas the “Bike” before Christmas…. Greetings fellow brother and sister riders! I can’t help but reminisce on the memories of this year’s riding season. I had the wonderful opportunity to ride with my best friend and her husband on a portion of America’s Route 66. Traveling by RV and trailering 2 Can-Am Spyders, we un-trailered the Spyders in Gallup, New Mexico and took off for a ride of a lifetime. My traveling friends knew the west like the back of their hand, having lived in California all their life before moving to Medina, Ohio. We rode to 5 national parks, Hwy 1 from Big Sur along the west coast to Vancouver Island, Jasper Park, the Iceland Parkway and experienced the quiet side of Sturgis and Deadwood. As a “young” rider of only 17 months, it humbled me to have had such an amazing experience in such a short time along with riding just short of 28,000 miles. I have come to appreciate what I have learned from other riders. The kindred spirit within the community sparked a new hope of life in me like never before. The frameless beauty of the open road brought many spontaneous smiles of thankfulness as well as a few tears of life’s less than pleasant memories. At the end of the day, I pinch myself knowing that life on my Spyder has definitely enhanced my life.

2,000 bikes filling I-77 with miles of support for Akron Children’s Hospital as well as the police escorted Veterans Memorial ride. Add in the numerous poker runs, pop up rides and small group rides, it has been a memorable riding season. Even though it isn’t even Halloween, the thought of Christmas and gift giving can be stressful. Some gifts can be bought on the night before Christmas, but other gifts may take time to create and/or order. I recently visited with 2 businesses in Berlin that offer unique and personal gift giving ideas. Gift the gift of Ink… “Studio What”? Is a busy tattoo studio in the heart of Amish country. They specialize in ink coverups. Mention Thunder Roads Magazine and receive a $150.00 gift certificate for $100.00 5117 West Main Street in Berlin. For appointments…. studio_what@mail.com

September was a huge month of local riding. One was the Adventure Harley Davidson’s Ladies Adventure Weekend. Last year, 4 of us ladies from Medina participated in their spectacular weekend. I was a mid-road captain on one of the rides. That opportunity “grew me” as a rider, in as much, given the instruction and education that comes along with group riding. This year, 6 of my riding friends from Medina joined me. Truly it is the love of riding that engages people. This year, I designed one of the routes and was appointed road captain however, the rain cancelled our ride, but didn’t dampen our spirits. Two other huge events I participated in were the annual Teddy Bear run with over 32

As fall begins to cool down, it can’t stop us from heating up winter with “hot” gift ideas. Here’s my Christmas poem to heat up some cool ideas! ’Twas the” bike” before Christmas while sitting’ by a fire; on my mind was my Soft Tail with a flat tire. “I want to be riding, but snows on the ground” and all of a sudden a “Fat Boy” fell with a big sound! “Ho! Ho! Ho! Why are you in despair? I brought gifts for you to share”. Those black chaps, red boots and a leather coat too… with gloves, a scarf and even a “Doo”! I saw your wife batting her eye lashes? Here’s her stocking filled with new patches! I thought, this cool man sure has class, I wonder what else is in his stash? Then all of a sudden came a great sound of thunder. Now throttle! Now Kickstand! Now handlebar, knuckle under! I looked at my wife in utter disbelief…..when out of his bag came an Indian Chief! With his beard in the wind, he roared off in the night, “Have a cool Yule, and to all a good ride!?” La Vonne De Bois

Bear and Sharon Hit the 78th Sturgis/ Black Hills Rally Or the other title of this should be, “Why the hell isn’t Bears open--where are they?!” Well, we shut the store down to take our vacation to the South Dakota rally, and it did not disappoint! This was our 3rd time we’ve travelled to Sturgis, and it was awesome as ever! Its also a working vacation of sorts, because we touch base with our suppliers and dealer reps, and check out new products for the store. There were huge displays set up at Rapid City Harley Davidson – even a “used bikes for sale” tent with 750 bikes on display! What’s so cool is the staggering number of motorcycles on the roads and that every town gives you that really great feeing of biker comradery.

36

The scenery of the Black Hills area is amazing! We camped at the KOA site behind Mt. Rushmore, a great place to be central to all the other locations – Custer, Keystone, Hill City, Deadwood, Sturgis, Rapid City, Spearfish, and many stops in between. One of our favorite rides was the Needles Highway. Its not as long as the Dragons Tail, but pretty challenging on its own…10 MPH switchbacks, one-lane tunnels carved through solid rock… just something you have to ride for yourself. Deadwood is a very cool town – with casinos! And I actually won a few bucks too. Keystone was a favorite stop, and just so happened we met a great couple, Robert & Heidi, who

own a little plaza with an awesome burger joint- BrGr 61. We ate there 4 or 5 times-- buffalo burgers rock! Bear and Robert hit it off right away, and before we left they took us to a private, restored mining camp. The original buildings and new structures had been renovated for handicapped children and adults. They even made the actual mine wheelchair accessible! They were a great couple who help a lot of people experience an outdoor adventure that would otherwise be impossible. Kudos to them! The weather was great – high 90s and sunny all week. But of course, the pop-up rainstorms had to catch you once or twice. But riding in the heat dried you up quickly. As expected, there were baggers, stock and custom, THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

choppers, big wheel works of art, bobbers of all makes, and the metric cruisers. But what we noticed was the large number of trikes--Harley, Can Ams, Indian, custom built, and some I may have missed. A lot of riders think these are “old geezer bikes” but we saw all ages and genders up on 3 wheels! And they make great pack horses! I was able to stuff souvenirs, t-shirts, hats, magazines, and even some cool rocks for my garden in the tour pack and trunk. All in all, we had a great trip, made it home safe and sound and really enjoyed the break. So, stores back open again, stop in and well tell ya more! Sharon AKA Mama Bear OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

“The Party on the Hill” Goes to Two Days! The Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimbs expands into the Hillclimb Weekend! For 2018, the Dayton Motorcycle Club has announced some exciting new changes for the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimbs that they host in Oregonia every year. The most dramatic being that they are expanding the event to two days – kicking off on Saturday, October 13th with dirt drags, grudge racing, and various motorcycle games. It’s an old school style field meet with live music to cap the day. All are welcome to join in the fun or come on out and simply cheer on those competing. No experience is needed and there is an endless supply of folks that can share their opinions and give a hand as needed. It’s a perfect compliment to the AMA PRO Hillclimb Races held on Sunday, October 14th. This will be the 69th running of the hillclimbs at Oregonia, making it one of the longest running motorcycle events in the country. It’s the culmination of the AMA PRO RACING series and generally determines the series Champions every year.

38

For those coming out for Saturday, the DMC is offering overnight camping in their area across the street. It’s primitive, but there’s plenty of space along the river and woods within walking distance from all the festivities. It’s a beautiful area and allows you to inexpensively camp right at the event and start your day – at the Hillclimbs! At night there will be live entertainment provided by OffR-Rockers from Cincinnati. There are expanded options for vendors and exhibitor displays as well, and shops / dealerships are invited to come out and display vehicles as well. On Saturday, there will be a special discounted swap meet area with spots for as little as $20! For more information and to reserve space, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

5th Annual DEVIL’S STAIRCASE BIKE SHOW Once again, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting a ride-in bike show as part of the Devil’s Staircase festivities. This show has proven to be an extremely popular one, with local and nationally established custom builders exhibiting some of their work alongside garage builds, incredible vintage bikes, and dialed in “stock bikes” that are better than factory! Finalists will be featured in Thunder Roads Ohio and the BEST OF SHOW will receive an invitation to the Series Finale being held as part of the Championship Show in Sandusky as part of Ohio Bike Week, as well as the chance to win $5,000 cash and a custom Champion’s Ring valued at over $3,500! Placards and trophies are awarded at the event, based upon participant voting and weighted judges scoring.

Yes, we did say “Off-Road” there. We are looking to showcase Enduro / Dual Sport / or straight up off-road beasts. This class is somewhat open to interpretation – but we welcome anything that’s meant to hit the trails, mud, or dirt track – rather than pavement. New this year – are special MILITARY TRIBUTE and PATRIOTIC / US THEMED BIKE CLASSES. These and the Custom Paint category are specialty classes which can also be added as a second class for a motorcycle being shown. THOSE REGISTERING IN ADVANCE ONLINE (at ThunderRoadsOhio.com) WILL RECEIVE A FREE T-SHIRT THE DAY OF THE EVENT.

Thunder Roads Ohio is looking to organize some SHOP CHALLENGES. If you own or are involved in a motorcycle shop and would like to join us as part of the hillclimb races and bike show – let us know. You can showcase your work and join in the fun! Email us for more information. ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

Cost is $20 per bike, $10 for each additional class / bike. You can register in advance through ThunderRoadsOhio. com for only $15. There are over a dozen classes as part of the TRO Championship Series, including American V-Twin, Metric, Vintage (Pre 80), Custom Paint, Off-Road, Touring, and Radical. All entries are automatically entered in the BEST OF SHOW Challenge. 40

What’s a Dirt Drag? A Dirt Drag or Field Meet, as some call them, are a drag race on a dirt track. There is some type of fencing or barrier between spectators and racers, but the racing can be seen up close and experienced with the engine sounds, the smell of fuel and very often a cloud of dust. All of that might turn you off a bit, but I assure you that it adds to the excitement of seeing the racers roar down the track. The dirt track is set up in two lanes for two racers at a time. There is a finish line for the end of the track and ample distance for the racers to stop at the end. The thing that makes it a bit more formal than just street drag racing is that they usually have a start light or triple tree. The lights flash the countdown for the start of the race from yellow to green to signal the start of each heat. Spectators are able to follow along as competitors set their start position, watch the countdown and see them fly down the track. There are usually some cheers and applause from the audience when racers make a fast run. There are false starts, stall outs at the start or even flips. Occasionally, racers do wreck and get injured. It adds to the excitement when the racers take off and the front wheel pulls off the ground. Many racing motorcycles have wheelie bars on the back of the bike to keep them from flipping and throwing the driver. The racers are divided into different classes based on age, size of the motorcycle or atv, engine size or even tire type or size. There are racers of all ages, from children to adult. Some racers appear to be very experienced and to know how to race. Even some of the very young child racers seem to have experience

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

while others need prompting from their parent to get down the track. This makes their part of the racing entertaining, enjoyable and a little comical. The racers are lined up by classes and race two at a time in elimination races. The racing continues, until they are down to the final two of the class. The start of each class is announced. Then an announcement is heard, this is the “winner run”, “trophy run”, “final run of the class” and people eagerly watch from start to finish to see which racer is the winner. There is usually one, sometimes two jackpot races. The Jackpot usually brings out a large number of racers, most with some experience and fast motorcycles. These are very exciting, fast heats. The jackpot races can be very exciting. As you watch the races, you will be able to feel and experience the excitement as the winner of each heat moves on to the next race then to final elimination race. Most dirt drags also have some comedy relief added in with the Wiener Race, or Water Bucket race. These are fun challenge partner races that anyone can join in. For these races, a rider and passenger work together to win. During the wiener race, the passenger takes a bite of the hotdog from the back of the bike while the rider goes slow or stops and wait for them to take a bite before they can finish the race. The Water Bucket Race involves the rider balancing a water bucket on a board over their head as the motorcycles race down the track. As you can imagine, there ends up being more than a few wet people. These race particpants could be some one you know or even yourself. If you have never seen motorcycle drags, you should really check them out and experience it for yourself. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Highlights from FlyBy Week 2018 Marietta, Ohio August 20-26

Although Charles had to go home, Derek stayed and went on the dinner tour before leaving for other commitments Friday morning. Here’s Derek with one of our volunteer members Jennie Kimes. Friday

By Norm Kern

The first Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) FlyBy Week rally at Marietta, Ohio was a big success. Helped by perfect weather all week (except part of Tuesday), every day offered great riding on the twisty backroads of Southeastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia.

each evening. On Monday-Wednesday evening we knew attendance would be light and were able to find enough four wheeled vehicles to carpool attendees to and from downtown on those nights. evening was the brat burn at the “outdoor lounge” behind the hotel. There was plenty of good food and conversation.

Most attendees arrived on Thursday, and we were ready with quick registration check-in and a trolley bus to take the large crowd into town for the evening’s dinner tour. Thursday was also the day we set up the “outdoor lounge” behind the hotel to give attendees a place to relax, gather and enjoy a cookout on Friday night.

At the end of a riding day, MSTA members want to get a shower, change clothes and enjoy dinner at a nice restaurant, but that doesn’t include putting their gear back on riding their bikes into town. To solve this problem, we offered “dinner tours,” going to a different downtown restaurant

46 46

Thursday was also a fun riding day as Thunder Roads’ own Derek TRO Smith brought his Yamaha FJR and came to do his first sport touring event and ride with me. We also had Charles Averell, a TRO reader who came to the event on his Harley bagger to see what FlyBy Week was all about. The three of us rode a West Virginia route that took us back across the Ohio river on the Sistersville ferry and returned to Marietta on OH Route 26. How did they do? We started out slow, but by the end of the 200-mile route, both Derek and Charles had improved their average speed by almost 15 MPH and were comfortable and having a great time. Charles said, “These are the kinds of roads I want to ride. I’ll be back next year with some friends!”

Saturday was another big riding day and everyone finished the week without any crashes or performance awards. The weather stayed dry and cool, topping off a perfect week. We even had enough volunteers to share the work load, so everyone got to enjoy the rally.

Owner: Jordan McGhee Shop: Farmtown Motors Facebook: @farmtownMotors It started life as a 1973 XS650 and somewhere along the line there was an attempt to turn it into a bobber. I say “attempt” because the bike was pretty much ruined when I bought it for $500. It was cut up, had very poor welds all over it, and I didn’t even know if it ran (neither did the guy I bought it from). So, I crossed my fingers and dove in. The XS650 is a very common bike to customize; it has a beautiful engine and is a good base to start from. This being the case, I decided that I wanted to build an XS650 that I had never seen before… so I started thinking (not one of my strong suits.) I decided to put a 2004 Kawasaki ZX636R front end on it and this was not an easy swap; I had to have my buddy John, custom machine the neck shaft to fit the stock Yamaha bearings, ion the rear, and I crammed the swingarm and suspension off a 1994 FZR600 onto the bike. Since the FZR600 came with an 18” rear rim (I needed a 17” so I could run race slicks) I had to fit a 2001 Suzuki Bandit 1200 rear wheel into the Yamaha swingarm. Now that the bike was a roller, I could work on changing the frame lines. I had to remove all the “custom” bobber that had work done in the past, and made upper frame rails and a custom subframe (hand bent the steel with fire). And then decided to beat sheets of aluminum into shape for the body work. All the aluminum pieces are hand-made except for the tank that was stolen off a 1970’s Yamaha dirt bike and modified to fit. To make things pretty I had my friend David Smith do all the powder coat on the frame, rims, and engine. I spent hours hand polishing the aluminum. There are MANY more details to list about this bike, but all in all, I used several different parts, and relied on several different friends, and walked away with one bad ass, hand-made, vintage aluminum racer. 48

Stolen Valor

I think when most of us hear Stolen Valor, we think of the military. Some knob head walking around pretending to be a soldier for the positive attention it may garner themselves. But in actuality it can mean simply taking credit for actions not completed. It’s election time, and down here in Florida some chick was running for some office, and she lied about her degree from a college in Ohio. A little fact checking by a watch dog group exposed that even though she somehow actually posted a picture holding her degree, that she never actually finished college and the picture is a fake. Now for me, she’s a perfect political candidate. Hell, she hasn’t even been elected and she’s already lying! Ha!

I am often asked what I think about these pop-up clubs that literally start overnight and sew on their new 1% diamonds fresh off the internet patch store. To me, it’s the same thing- Stolen Valor. Most clubs that I know that wear a 1% diamond, have done so for 40+ years. It’s literally impossible to live the 1% lifestyle of the days of old in modern times, as most will end up quickly in prison in this snitch a** crybaby society. Too many sell outs and too many cell phones. Yes, it is also true in my opinion that many clubs wearing the 1% are living off the reputation of a 30 or 40-year-old history, and not the base of their current membership. But that’s another article maybe someday. So, what do I think of these clubs popping up all over and putting on a diamond? I think you’re 30 years too late, and you are trying to steal the recognition and notoriety of past MC clubs whose members actually 52

paid the price of that diamond, and at the very least, their older members probably earned it. I think that you should also know that pretty much all of us in the MC life with history feel the same as I do. You look stupid, not intimidating or “cool”, or to be feared or respected. In fact the total opposite. We are not afraid of you, nor do we respect you simply because you sewed on a 1% diamond. You look stupid and desperate. Hell, Ted Bundy admitted to murdering 30 people, but he didn’t wear a 1% diamond, and he was truly a dangerous man. Don’t fear the man that tells you he’s dangerous, fear the man who shows you. What most of these egos driven “leaders” fail to realize is that they are putting their brothers in potential of harms way, simply to satisfy their own inflated opinion of themselves. In most cases, these

pop up “nomad” rockers and 1% diamond wearing clubs rarely last 2-5 years. Many are made up of failures from multiple other established clubs, and they washed out for their lack of commitment, or for putting themselves above the brotherhood, and their old habits now follow them to their newest endeavor at pretending to be something that they are not. We remain unimpressed. You want to impress us? Find an established nation, earn their respect, join them and make them better. That’s a real 1%er in my book. Keep it Real, by Being Real!

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Guns and Bandages- the changing face of first responders by Rob Morse, Buckeye Firearms Association School is about to start. Does your local school have trained first responders? Does your state allow selected and trained school staff to go armed in order to protect your children? I study those trends across the country. One thing I can tell you for sure is that my observations today will be inaccurate next month. I’ve revised this map several times this year. While I can find public announcements in most cases, some states do not require the public to be notified if school staff are armed. That uncertainty skews my research, but too bad. There are excellent reasons not to publicize school security plans. I’ll gladly accept that uncertainty even if the resulting data underestimates the number of states and schools with armed staff. Some states allow armed school staff and some state governments clearly deny it. The issue of legal permission or prohibition becomes more complex as we look closer. The line is blurred rather than clear-cut. Some states allow armed staff for private schools but deny it to public schools. In addition, some sheriffs go to great lengths to enable selected school staff to be armed. While that is a good thing, it means it may take extraordinary legal efforts by a sheriff and a local school board to have armed first responders defending their students. That level of effort may not be available to every school board in the state. Where are we today? Ohio allows armed school staff at the discretion of local school boards. Most, if not all, of these school boards use the FASTER training program. I contacted the volunteers at FASTER to get a feel of the size of their activities to date. FASTER has trained more than 1000 school staff members to be armed first responder. About a hundred more have been trained in Colorado. The movement to arm school staff went into high gear after the murder of our students in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. The program has been ongoing for 5 years, and that is long enough for some of the trained staff to retire or change schools. We’ve gained a lot of experience even with those losses from the program. The FASTER program has accumulated thousands of man-years of experience with trained first responders in the classroom. That underestimates what we know. Several states, like Utah and Colorado, allowed armed school staff for years before the attack at Sandy Hook. Utah does not require the concealed carriers who work at schools to notify the school administration if they are carrying.

54 54

Looking at the numbers, 82 of the 88 counties in Ohio have programs with armed school staff. 20 percent of the staff in some rural Ohio schools are trained to be armed defenders and medical first responders. We call them “teachers”, but classroom instructors only make up 40 percent of the school staff trained by faster. Those teachers protect our kids even if the teacher in your child’s classroom isn’t armed. A murderer never knows which district, which school building, and which classroom is ready to stop him. A known product Districts used to investigate the FASTER program by sending a teacher and an administrator to take the training. These staff members would report back to the school board with their evaluation. We see less of that today. FASTER is now a recognized program and a known commodity.

School districts adopt the plan after talking with superintendents and sheriffs from other counties. Today, districts adopt the plan by sending dozens of staff members for training. FASTER used to collect private funding to pay for the first trained teachers and administrators. That is less common, although it still happens. Districts now budget for and pay to send a full complement of staff. Some districts fill an entire training class; usually two dozen students a time. The program is popular. When new training dates become available, class registration with openings for 24 trainees typically fill up in a day. That describes the training in Ohio. Statistics from other states are harder to find. FASTER Colorado brought their training program to that state two years ago. 30 out of 181 school

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their

districts have a program for armed staff in Colorado today. School staff come from other states to attend the FASTER classes offered in Ohio and Colorado. I know there are plans to start training classes in other states next year, but that has not happened yet. The perception of armed staff has changed among school boards and teachers. Volunteers used to be selected from the staff who already had their concealed carry permits. Today, we’re seeing more teachers who will get their carry permits specifically so they may become armed school staff. That was unheard of a few years ago. Medical first responders The decision to arm school staff may make it into the local news. In contrast, the decision to train and equip school staff to perform emergency trauma care often goes unreported. School districts usually wait for summer vacation to train teachers to go armed. Rather than taking months, school districts can train medical first responders by next week. A growing trend in the last few years is for districts to sponsor local medical training classes. That way, many staff members are available to treat the injured in an emergency. State government in Ohio provided matching funds for medical first responder training and for trauma kits. The goal was to have several trauma kits along every hallway. Programs in churches The progress in church security is several years behind what we see in schools. Fortunately,

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

there are fewer legal restrictions on religious institutions. Church governing boards have greater latitude in adopting a first responder program. That freedom is both a blessing and a curse. There is a trend for churches to over-customize their security plans whereas most schools tend to adopt existing plans with a minimum of changes. Disturbing issues Political concerns are always with us. We see this in schools, churches and hospitals. Politicians and administrators reinvent the first responder training curriculum for their own political purposes. Administrators signal their virtue by demanding higher training standards for their staff. This reduces the number of first responders who are available and drives up costs. More importantly, it drives up the response time until a good guy can stop a bad buy. When seconds count, the injured will have to wait longer to receive treatment. We’ve run enough exercises to separate fact from theory. It is better to have 10 staff members who each have 10 hours of medical training than to have a single responder who has 100 hours of training. Some school administrators approved an armed responder program but dictated that firearms must be kept in a locked safe located in the classroom. That raises several questions. Why should students be unprotected in the parking lot, the amphitheater, the cafeteria, the gymnasium or the administrative offices? If a locked safe is a bad solution for police and uniformed school resource officers, then why

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

is it a good solution for teachers? The experts say that on-body carry is best. If school staff must keep their guns in a school safe, then give them a carbine and body armor as well. Political concerns are real. Maybe an incremental approach is all that the community will tolerate today. Trends Very few parents had ever heard of a school safety plan five years ago. Today, more parents are attending school board meetings and asking if their school safety plan is up to date. They ask when their school had their last safety audit and if the audit recommendations were fully implemented. I expect that trend to continue. Community involvement is a driving force to make our schools and churches safer. More parents, teachers, administrators and sheriffs are determined to protect our children. More ministers say, “I will protect my flock.” Through the miracle of this American experiment, these concerned people find each other and act. I’ve seen these citizen-volunteers collect the best solutions from around the world. That fills me with hope and with pride. I expect that trend to continue. I hope you are part of it. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fill a large soup pot half way with water then place over high heat and bring to a boil Meanwhile cut tops off of the bell peppers, remove any seeds and discard then cut the bottoms off, slice one side of each pepper and place all into the boiling water and allow to cook for at least 5 minutes In a medium sauce pan heat olive oil and sauté the onion and garlic until slightly soft Add in the sausage, chicken stock, basil, fennel seeds, and oregano, brown meat until all liquid is gone, remove from heat, stir in cooked rice and allow it to cool Mix the egg, ricotta, parmesan, half the mozzarella, salt and pepper in a bowl and set aside Remove peppers from water and allow to drain– they should be nice and soft just like lasagna noodles To assemble place a couple tablespoons over the bottom of a 13 x 9 baking dish Layer of 1/3 of the peppers, cutting if needed to fit Layer in ½ of the meat mixture, ½ of the cheese mixture and 1/3 the sauce mix, repeat Top with the remaining peppers and mozzarella, then cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes Remove the foil and bake another 20 minutes Remove from oven and allow to sit 10-15 minutes, slice and serve!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... A police officer had just pulled over a yuppie on a new Harley for running a stop sign. “May I see your driver’s license and registration please...” the officer asked. “What’s the problem, officer?” the yuppie replied.

Two Nuns and a Mini Dracula Two nuns, Sister Mary Agnes and Sister Mary Vincent, are traveling through Europe in their car, sightseeing in Transylvania. As they are stopped at a traffic light, out of nowhere, a small vampire jumps onto the hood of the car and hisses at them through the windshield. “Quick, quick!” shouts Sister Mary Agnes, “What should we do?” “Turn the windshield wipers on. That will get rid of the abomination,” says Sister Mary Vincent. Sister Mary Agnes switches on the wipers, which knock the mini-Dracula around. But, he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns. “What shall I do now?” she shouts. “Try the windshield washer. I filled it with holy water before we left the Vatican,” replies Sister Mary Vincent.

“You just ran a stop sign.” the officer said. “Oh come on, pal, there wasn’t a single car anywhere in sight.” “Nevertheless sir, you are required to come to a complete stop, look both ways, and only then proceed with caution.”

“It’s no joke sir.” the officer said flatly, pulling out his citation book and preparing to write a ticket.

She asks, “OK, but how often do I have to do that?”

“Look I slowed down almost to a complete stop, saw no one, and proceeded with caution.” The officer sighed and slowly shook his head. “That’s beside the point sir, you are supposed to come to a complete stop and you didn’t. Now if I may see your license and...” the officer began. “You sure do have a lot of time on your hands pal. What’s the matter, all the doughnut shops closed this early?” the yuppie asked sneering.

“Now what?” shouts Sister Mary Agnes.

“SIR!” The officer sighed. “I’ll over look that last comment now let me see your license and registration immediately!” “I will, if you can tell me the difference between slowing down and coming to a complete stop.” the yuppie said, folding his arms across his chest.

“Now you’re talking,” says Sister Mary Agnes. She then opens the window and shouts, “Get the hell off our car!”

A blonde pushes her motorcycle to the local bike shop and tells the mechanic it died. After working on it for a few minutes, he has is idling smoothly again. She says, “What was wrong with it?” He replies, “Just crap in the carburetor.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” the yuppie said.

Sister Mary Agnes turns on the windshield washer. The vampire screams as the water burns his skin, but he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns. “Show him your cross,” says Sister Mary Vincent.

“Sir, I can do better than that.” The police officer quickly jerked the rude yuppie off his Harley and proceeded to methodically beat him over the head with his nightstick. “Now sir, would you like for me to slow down or come to a complete stop?”

A smile appeared on the officer’s face.
