As part of our mission we have sought to cover “all aspects” of the motorcycle community. Of course we can’t cover EVERYTHING; but we do our best to include everything from trail riding to touring, from sport bikes to vintage Europeans, from American V-Twin to cutting edge electric bikes – all of this and everything in between. As we cover the machines and events, we also take the time to feature riders and personalities that we meet along the way. Just like the machines, this means we cover a WIDE range of folks. We certainly recognize that not everyone is going to like every machine we feature – or every opinion that is shared. While we are all riders and motorcycle enthusiasts – we have a lot of options to choose from within the sport. We can choose to ride metric, vintage, electric, trikes, choppers, bobbers, or whatever we want. We can wear classic leathers or a modern “Joe Rocket” outfit. It’s our opinion, though, that in order to fully appreciate the options we choose – we should be aware of what’s out there. How can you be passionate about any particular type of bike – if that’s all you’ve ever seen? That’s not dedication – it’s ignorance. You can’t say that a rumbling v-twin is your favorite style of bike if you’ve never been on anything else. Likewise, you shouldn’t allow your passion for European bikes to blind you to everything else that’s out there. We’ve recently surpassed 110,000 fans on our facebook page and if you’re one of them – you know we have some spirited discussions on there. I’d like to think that’s one of the reason’s we’ve become so popular online. We don’t simply share pretty pictures – although we certainly share plenty of pictures! (We currently have over 20,000 photos from events, rides, rallies, and shoots all across the country saved to our galleries.) Just like in the magazine – we present machines, ideas, visions, and people for consideration. Online, everyone can respond quickly; and it’s often only a matter of time before things get nasty. It’s usually someone that has no real argument to make – just nastiness because we are sharing something outside their normal routine or comfort zone. Folks – I love my bike; but just because I do - it doesn’t mean yours is worthless. This seems kind of obvious – but I’m constantly amazed by how often it comes up. I’d encourage everyone to consider that life is much like the roads we travel on our bikes. If you always ride the same roads, see the same scenery, and go the same places – life will become rather routine and eventually bland. However, if you expand your rides or take new routes – you may just discover some new sites and stops. Life’s the same way. Try some new roads and consider some new perspectives. You may find some that you like – and other’s may cause you to appreciate your old route that much more! Don’t shut your eyes to new experiences simply because you are happy with what you have. Once your eyes are open, the decisions you make have that much more strength and conviction. Give it a try! And of course, if you’re out exploring new roads - do it on a bike!

AS TOLD BY THE IRON COWBOY DAYTON MOTORCYCLE CLUB AND LAW OFFICES OF RALPH C BUSS TO GIVE AWAY LED SLED CUSTOM BIKE AT HILL CLIMBS Yet another reason to head out and join Thunder Roads Ohio at the World Famous Party on the Hill that is otherwise known as the 65th Annual Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimbs being held in Oregonia this October 12th. Last year, Pat Patterson and his team at Led Sled Customs joined Thunder Roads Ohio in hosting the first ever Custom Ride-In Bike Show as part of the legendary hillclimbs. Led Sled and TRO will once again be hosting the bike show but we wanted to do something more and came up with the idea of hosting a bike give-away. With the assistance of Ralph Buss, the Dayton Motorcycle Club commissioned the creation of a unique motorcycle to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of The Devil’s Staircase. While the bike has yet to be unveiled, Pat and his team have been hard at work creating a bike like no other! According to Pat, “it’s really going to be something different. We came up with some ideas that we think will give it a real rugged, aggressive look which really captures the spirit of the hillclimb race bikes.” And the most exciting thing about the bike? At the end of the event – some lucky fan will win it! Follow us online through our Facebook page for updates on the bike and news on the upcoming unveiling. www.facebook.com/thunderroadsohio
POLARIS PRESENTS THE SLINGSHOT! Polaris celebrated 60 years of innovation by introducing the highly anticipated Polaris Slingshot; an awe-inspiring 3-wheel roadster that represents the future of on-road driving exhilaration. “Slingshot was designed to deliver head turning exhilaration on two dimensions,” said Mike Jonikas, 6
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Vice President of Slingshot. “First is the exhilaration that you can see, hear, and feel while riding in Slingshot. Second is the exhilaration you feel when people turn their heads to stare at Slingshot’s unique and exotic styling.” In some material, the Slingshot is referred to as a “3 wheeled motorcycle” and many are comparing it to a trike or the Can-Am Spyder. Purists, though, shudder and scoff at the idea that this might be considered a “motorcycle”. Regardless of how it’s classified, it seems clear that the entire machine is intended to accomplish one thing – push the limits and get the adrenaline pumping! For more information on the Slingshot – including where you might be able to find one, visit www.polaris. com/en-us/slingshot

September Legislative Update
Elections are right around the corner. The candidates are busy in their hometown stirring up support. Take the time to track them down and introduce yourself. Get a card from them, or an email address, or a phone number so that you have the info at a later date. Meeting of the Minds is coming up. I am sorry to say I will be unable to attend this year because of job obligations. I look forward to this event every year because it is a good chance to influence our lobbyists (MRF) in DC. I have great faith that we will be represented well in my absence. There is one issue I would like to clarify because I still get questions on it. We do not have a ROW bill introduced this session. It was discussed at the seminar and again at a State BOD meeting. Currently the traffic offenses in Ohio that result in serious injury or death are being charged with Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Assault, or Vehicular Manslaughter. These three charges are not covered by our previous ROW legislation. Increasing the penalties for these three offenses isn’t an option as they all can be charged up to, and including felonies. The problem now is not with the law as it is written; it is the enforcement by the courts. What can we as a motorcyclist’s rights organization do to request stronger penalties? Exactly what Region 7 did this spring and summer. Find out the hearing dates. Get some signs and stand in front of the courthouse on the day of the hearing and have a peaceful demonstration. Contacting the Judge and Prosecuting Attorney is an option. Letters to the editor of your local newspaper gets some attention. Watch out for deer, wet leaves, and slow moving farm equipment. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood; State Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. woody702001@yahoo.com
SEPTEMBER SAFETY & EDUCATION REPORT Hi Friends, We are almost out of summer and we have had many less motorcycle crashes but deaths are close to the same as last year, an interesting and disturbing statistic. Regardless of why I think the statistics are like this, it is evidence that too many of our Ohio Brothers and Sisters are losing their lives on the roads. Crashes: 2014 – 1465 2013 – 2369 Fatalities: 2014 – 70 2013 – 77 When traveling, you need to prepare for the unexpected. The first thing you need is a good idea of where you are going, what roads you will be on to get there and how much time you will be in the saddle between rests. Be realistic about how much you, and others in your party, can do in one day. It’s not necessary to log the most miles, only to have a good time. If you use your phone for navigation, also make sure you have a paper map with you. There are places where your phone won’t work. Your passenger should be paying attention to the route and help look for road signs, dangers such as dogs or merging cars, and watching the rear mirrors to make sure the bikes behind are all following. Folks, if you see someone drop off from your group, STOP with them as soon as safe to do so. Do not be so oblivious that you leave someone with a problem miles behind. Once a problem happens, the most important thing to know is what you have available for roadside service. Know what your insurance offers or what is available through organizations you belong to, and make sure it will cover your bike. My roadside assistance (recently used) covers 30 miles to the nearest service point. I had to pay $60 but they paid $270 because it was $4 a mile. I sure was happy I didn’t have to pay it all. As summer comes to an end, events and rides are happening everywhere. Every weekend there are 4 or 5 things happening within 20 miles of me. How to choose? It’s not always easy. Since I am an active member of a motorcycle rights organization, I mostly ride for freedom of the road. Us old guys remember when there weren’t so
many bikes on the roads and we had to fight to keep our lifestyle. Fights always cost money, and local clubs and motorcycle organizations provided that money. These clubs and organizations need our dollars to stay afloat, so we need to support their rides and events whenever possible. As far as organizations, supporting AMA means supporting motorcycling all over the world. Joining the MRF gives motorcyclists in the United States a voice in the federal government. ABATE works for you on the state level to combat laws and policies that are not motorcycle friendly. Local club members usually belong to one or more of these organizations, as they understand what it takes to maintain our freedom. The next time there is an event to support a motorcycle club or organization, please be there and let them know you appreciate what they do for us. We need to keep checking a few things: 1- Distracted driving is still a problem. We need to keep reminding our friends and family that we need to pay attention. 2- Keep checking our new riders and make sure they are getting trained and have proper insurance. 3- Every time you ride, do a visual inspection on your bike and include your friend’s bike. Not everyone gets their bike checked out by a service person every month so help your friends out. Ride within your limits Mike Stock ABATE of Ohio Inc. FROM THE BACK OF by Nancy Beach THE BIKE Hope everyone is enjoying this great summer weather and taking advantage of it by getting lots of riding in! We have been riding more this summer than last with lots of little trips and a weekly ride to Bike Night at Sheffield Lake’s Quaker Steak and Lube, and the Jack Daniels Saloon in Sandusky. And with lots of festivals throughout the state, and bike parking making it convenient, we have enjoyed many wonderful nights. The summer has been fun and I hope it lasts and lasts! So, I have to tell a few fun stories. You always meet a lot of great people when you are out riding. But I don’t always take their pictures. Not the case with Jim. We had to get his picture at one of the Bike Nights since he was sitting there, enjoying the band and reading Thunder Roads Ohio! If I run into any of you, and you have a TRO with you, you bet I am taking your picture! I had to add the picture of a friend of ours. He was the original owner of the Shovel I so lovingly speak of. He has a couple of bikes but the one he was riding that day is so cool! After much wrenching, that thing is a dynamo. Talk about fast! Perfect timing as we were home and just happened to stop by. And, I had my camera ready. I always talk about the adventures of riding the old Shovel but there are adventures with a new bike as well. Just an observation, or maybe some advice…don’t forget that gas key. Leaving the gas station headed back home and riding on fumes can be a little nerve wracking! Enough said. Our next adventure, is at the end of the month and we are off to the Easyrider Rodeo in Chillicothe! We have been going for years...this will be my 9th…this will be his 25th! We get there early and pick the right spot…close enough to everything but far enough away. We always make sure that we stop to see the guys at the Lost Tribe Clubhouse. Great group of guys and they open up the clubhouse for those attending the rodeo. The antique bar is incredible. And you can’t stop without writing your name on the wall before you leave. It is a major trip as we take the camper, the trailer, the Shovel, Four-wheeler and the dog. A lot has changed in a year as we have added a couple of puppies to the family. The four-wheeler is for zipping around in the field and giving out magazines. Or, getting gas! The dogs….well you have to take them! You just have to! So if you plan on being there and see the banner, stop and say Hi! I will have my camera ready! Even if I am on the back of the bike!

You’ve heard of the “Big Mo” but have you heard of the “Big Ten?” (No I’m not referring to college sports conferences) Dr. John Maxwell, well known speaker and leadership trainer, in his book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” talks about the “Big Mo”. What is the “Big Mo”? It’s Momentum. Dr. Maxwell states momentum is a leader’s best friend, and goes on to say the only difference between winning and losing is the “Big Mo”. He describes momentum as having the ability to exaggerate much more than what really is what seems to be. Did you get that? Let me say it one more time. Momentum has the ability to exaggerate much more than what really is what seems to be. Think on that. In the book of Deuteronomy from the Old Testament a generation of Israel had left Egyptian captivity never to step foot into the Promised Land because of their lack of faith in God’s ability to give them the land He had promised. Deuteronomy was written to a “New” generation of Israel. Moses opens chapter 5 with a brief review of the covenant (promise) these people have entered into with God. Moses instructs them in verses 1-5 how they need to hear, learn, and observe the statutes and ordinances of this promise; how God had made this promise with them not their fathers; and, God is their Lord who brought them out of slavery in Egypt. Then in verse 7 is recorded the first of the “Big Ten” I am referring to. “You shall have no other gods before me.” NASB Let’s define the word god. God can be supreme or most important to us; something that rules our lives; absorbs our time, money, or energy; simply put anything (time, person, or thing) that is put first in our lives. God’s first “Big Ten” states we are to have “NO” other gods before Him. I read an illustration
somewhere that put it like this; how would you like it if someone took a picture of you and hung it on the wall. Then they talked to that picture and held that picture in high esteem, but ignored you whenever you were around? Psalm 139 opens up and in my mind makes it clear, God is everywhere. There isn’t any place in this world you or I can go to get away from Him. God is everywhere. In fact even when we try to use the darkness of night to hide our actions, Psalms 139 tells us the night is as the day to God. Meaning He still sees our every action. We cannot hide from God. If we listen to the “Big Mo”, which exaggerates much more than what really is, we would believe darkness hides us from detection. But, it’s only what seems to be. Like the “New” generation of Israel who needed to hear and be reminded that God’s promise was with them, we need to hear, learn, and observe the statutes and ordinances of God’s promise to us. Simply put that is, God loves us. Jesus died for us. We need to acknowledge we are sinners and in need of Jesus’ atonement. Believe God, through Jesus Christ, will forgive and forget our sins. Then live our lives with God as the only Lord of our lives. GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

The 69 cubic inch V-twin Scout and the Roadmaster supercruiser revive classic models from the Indian archives. From 1947 to 1953, the Roadmaster was a dominant model in the Indian lineup and was recognized as one of the most comfortable and durable touring bikes of the period. The new 2015 Roadmaster seeks to reclaim that heritage with a number of upgrades and premium amenities aimed at providing comfort, convenience, and certainly luxury for the touring rider. Brian Dulle Memorial Ride Held Saturday, July 26th at Powder Keg Harley-Davidson Although the day started out with threatening skies and a little bit of rain dampened things at the beginning of the ride, this year’s Brian Dulle Memorial Ride was better than ever, according to John Wright, ride committee member. “We surpassed last year’s motorcycle count with over 350 motorcycles and approximately 500 participants,” Wright reported. “While final numbers have not been totally calculated, we expect to exceed last year’s contributions that we will be donating to our three charities; The Brian Dulle Scholarship Fund, Maddie’s Hope and The Shield LC.” The benefit ride is held each year in honor of Warren County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Brian Dulle, who was killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2011. Sgt. Dulle is survived by his wife and three young children - one of which is the namesake of a non-profit group called Maddie’s Hope, which raises money for cancer research.

5th Annual “BIG” Mike Memorial Bike Run North Canton / Akron Area
On July 27, 2014, Legends Sports Pub hosted the 5th Annual “Big” Mike Memorial Bike Run. It was supported by Thunder Roads Ohio, Greater Akron Motorcycle Club and WONE. “Big” Mike Kerr was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident on July 27, 2008. It was the first time that the 27th fell on a Sunday since 2008, the year of the accident. Mike’s parents Joe and Jan Kerr with help of family and friends, organize and put on the bike run. The proceeds go to support Life Bank. “Big” Mike was a organ donor and 4 people received life saving organs from “Big” Mike. Mike’s parents were present to oversee the day’s event and Joe gave a pre-ride talk. Joe also introduced 3 of the 4 people who were also present at the bike run and had received organs from “Big Mike”. Those present were Bill of New York who received his heart, Valerie of Medina who received his liver and Tommy of North Canton who received a kidney. A big thanks to those who chanced the weather and came out to support the bike run and Life Bank.... and to “Big” Mike who gave the gift of life to others. Road Glide enthusiasts have spent the last year wondering what Harley had in store; but after a one-year hiatus, a new 2015 model has finally emerged. The new model was revealed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota and Thunder Roads Ohio was there to check it out. It was immediately evident that Harley-Davidson had given the customer driven, Project Rushmore treatment to this new model. It had many changes which all seemed to be focused on making the Road Glide the undeniable King of the Road when it comes to touring – a title that it holds in the eyes of many touring riders. The factory also introduced a Road Glide Special version that features a few further enhancements. One look at the new Road Glide and immediately you notice its more aggressive “Shark Nose” fairing. It is roughly an inch and a half narrower than its predecessor and brings a significantly more aerodynamic, cooler feel on those hot summer days. The split stream fairing vents really are one of the most noticeable improvements and tremendously cut back on the airflow issues common with a fairing of Road Glide proportion. The vents are manually controlled and allow the rider to determine exactly how air is routed through the nose of the bike. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Many Road Glide owners have asked for better lighting and Harley delivered for 2015. “Dual Reflector Daymaker LED” headlights offer just what you need for a foggy night with 85% more spread. Another Project Rushmore improvement comes with the improved hard injected molded saddlebags already found in Harley’s other touring models. These new style saddle bags have an easier, more accessible lock and lid system which you can easily operate with one hand. Other improvements include an adjustable air-ride rear suspension, a swept back handlebar, cruise control, and ergonomic hand controls. Opt to spend the roughly 3k more for the Road Glide Special and you will find a better sound system - BoomBox 6.5GT (compared to the BoomBox 4.3) which includes touch screen and GPS navigation. Reflex linked brakes with ABS and a painted inner fairing also bring appeal to the Special. You may consider the special if you also must have that Superior Blue color which is not offered in the Road Glide standard package. Paint schemes include Vivid Black, Amber Whiskey, Mysterious Red Sunglo, and Black Denim. A bold Superior Blue color is only offered with the Special package; but the Mysterious Red Sunglo is only found in the Road Glide base package. August 26 is the magic date when you can begin test riding and find the new models in all your local H-D dealerships, right in time for the cool autumn riding season.

1 0 1 E L C Y C R O T O M ypes of Bikes to T e id u G k ic u Q A
So you consider yourself a biker or at the very least a “motorcycle enthusiast” – but do you really know the basics? You may think you do – but do you know the difference between a dirt bike and a trials bike? Or how about an Enduro or a Supermoto? Here’s a quick run down on the basics – just in case you get put on the spot. Adventure/Touring, Dual Sports The offspring of rugged dirtbikes and long-distance tourers, these bikes boast lots of suspension travel and upright postures that are comfortable for lengthy Adventure Touring - The Triumph 800xc rides. Choppers Choppers are a type of cruiser, so called because they are a “chopped”, or cut-down, version of a production cruiser. Choppers are usually custom projects that result in a bike modified to suit the owner’s ideals, and, as such, are a source of pride and accomplishment. Stereotypically, a chopper may have raked-out forks, small fuel tanks and high handlebars. Choppers were popularized in the Peter Fonda film Easy Rider. Being designed primarily for visual effect, choppers will not usually be the most efficient riding machines. Epitomized by the HarleyDavidson Panhead in the film Captain America, choppers tend to have extremely raked forks, reclined seats, and lots of showy chrome.
Dual Sport Dual-sports, sometimes called dualpurpose or on/off-road motorcycles, are street legal machines that are also designed to enter off-road Dual Sport BMW R1200GS situations. Typically based on a dirt bike chassis, they have added lights, mirrors, signals, and instruments that allow them to be licensed for public roads. They are higher than other street bikes, with a high center of gravity and tall seat height, allowing good suspension travel for rough ground. Dirt Bikes Dirt bikes generally refer to motorcyles designed for offroad riding, and typically feature knobby tires, long suspension travel, and minimalistic frames and bodywork. Dirt Bike Variants of dirt bike designs compete in Enduro, Motocross, and Trials events, among others. Enduro Bikes Designed for long distance offroad competitions, Enduro bikes are usually equipped with headlights and taillights for nighttime riding, and can be outfitted with timers and roll chart reading devices that aid riders with navigation and timekeeping.
Naked Bikes Naked bikes recall British motorcycles of the sixties, and lack bodywork or a fairing that would normally hide their engines and inner-workings.
The Classic Chopper
Cruisers Cruisers are styled after American machines from the 1930s to the early 1960s, such as those made by Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Excelsior-Henderson. HarleyDavidsons largely define the Cruiser - The Yamaha Roadliner cruiser category, and largedisplacement V-twin engines are the norm, although other engine configurations and small to medium displacements also exist. Their engines are tuned for low-end torque, making them less demanding to ride because it is not necessary to shift as frequently to accelerate or maintain controCruisers are like muscular, relaxed choppers; their fork rake is less extreme, and they’re designed for laid-back riding – “cruising the streets”. 38
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
Enduro - KTM
Naked Triumph Speed Triple
Power Scooters Power scooters are like scooters on steroids, and they share a similar step-through (or near stepthrough) design. But they also boast large engines (sometimes up Power Scooter - Bergman to 650cc) rivaling the powerplants 650 found in some motorcycles. Power scooters usually offer commuter-friendly creature comforts and numerous storage compartments.
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Scooters Typified by Italian-made Vespas, scooters are like small motorcycles with bodywork that allows the rider to “step through” and sit without getting his or her clothes stained by oil. Scooter engine sizes can be as little as 50cc. Scooter - Vespa Primavera Sport Bikes Designed purely for performance, sport bikes tend to require armsforward posture, powerful engines, and tight handling. The Naked Ducati Monster1200
Sport Touring Sport touring motorcycles combine attributes of sport bikes and touring motorcycles. The rider posture is less extreme than a sport bike, giving greater long-distance comfort. Sport Touring Bike Accommodation for a passenger is superior to a sport bike as well, along with luggage capacity
Christini-AWD-SuperMoto
Supermoto Bikes Based on race machines that compete on a combination of road and dirt surfaces, Supermoto bikes combine offroad characteristics such as deep suspension travel with road tires and bodywork reminiscent of so-called “street fighter” bikes.
Touring Bikes Touring motorcycles are specifically designed to excel at covering long distances. They have largedisplacement engines, fairings and screens that offer Touring - Harley-Davidson good weather and wind protection, large-capacity fuel tanks for long ranges between fill-ups, and a relaxed, upright seating position. Usually the bike is designed to accommodate a passenger as well – along with plenty of luggage space.
Trials Motorcycle
Trials Bikes These specialized competition bikes are tailor made for trials events, in which motorcycles are maneuvered around offroad or man-made obstacles, and riders are penalized if their feet touch the ground. Extremely lightweight, trials bikes lack seats and feature stiffer suspension than most dirtbikes.

PRESENTED BY RIDER INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Rider Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
42
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a Biketoberfest Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
BONUS Check-in’s!
The 2014 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
It’s really that Simple! Get your Ohio Ride Card. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
FEATURE PRIZES for SEPT. 2014 TICKETS TO THE DEVIL’S STAIRCASE AND A CHANCE TO WIN A CUSTOM LED SLED MOTORCYCLE! Thunder Roads Ohio will be giving away over 20 pairs of tickets to the 65th Annual Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimbs being held in Oregonia, Ohio on October 12th, 2014. Each entry will also be automatically selected as a finalist for special prize drawings held at the event by Thunder Roads Ohio and eligible to win a brand new CUSTOM Led Sled Motorcycle, presented by The Law Offices of Ralph Buss.
This is NOT the bike being given away – but just one example of the amazing work done by the Led Sled crew.
NEW FOR 2014 – You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your past Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state. THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
THUNDER ROADS OHIO SUBSCRIPTIONS AND GEAR
All summer long, we will be drawing winners from Ride Card checkin’s to win Thunder Roads Ohio shirts, sweatshirts, and subscriptions to the magazine. May check-in’s will be eligible to win at least 20 subscriptions and TRO merchandise prizes.

WORLD WAR II: From Normandy to Germany BY PLATOON SGT. BERTON PEEPERS, RETIRED

He pointed to several and told them on LST (Landing Ship Tank) at South Hampton, England and arrived that they were now on the tank crew and then he looked and me – off Omaha Beach after midnight. A short time later, I drove off LST “Peepers – you’re tank commander.” I didn’t really know anything onto a barge and sat there until daybreak. The call came over the about tanks, but I was there. I lost my armored car and got a loud speaker from the LST for number “26” GO. So I drove the tank instead. Later I realized that I forgot all about the wine in the armored car off the barge onto the English Channel. All I could see armored car in the excitement of them making me tank commander. for a couple minutes was water through my periscope. A piper cub from the 9th division was observing for their artillery and he saw all of us running to the rear and swathe bombers dropping their bombs on our troops and called them on his radio and got them back on target. I would say in about 15 minutes or less we lost 93 dead and 600 wounded from the 9th division. After the bombing stopped then it was big division artillery on the Germans. When that was over, we broke out of those hedge rows into the French country side. I was the first into Belgium and one of the first in Germany. That lasted for about 4 months and they made me Platoon Sergeant. Next was the Battle of Hurtgen Forest then the Battle of Bulge and next, Remagan Bridge. Another big story… About a week before the end of the war I had heard they put me in for Platoon Leader Second Lieutenant. The war was over May 19, 1945. Piqua BikeFest
September 19 and 20th Piqua, Ohio A community driven rally built upon a hundred year old event! On Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September 20th, the Piqua community will welcome motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout the Midwest for a two day celebration of riding, live music, community, and fun. The timing and initial incentive for this event is based on a historic motorcycle event that occurred in Piqua on a sunny September morning in 1914. On that date, one hundred years ago, Hemm Brothers Harley-Davidson was located on N. Main Street where Piqua Granite now operates. A picnic with food, games and a ride around the local countryside was hosted by the Harley shop. A commemorative picture was taken in front of the store with all of the participants and their motorcycles, as was the custom back then. Piqua BikeFest will be the modern day equivalent to that historic event, only better! It will be full of energy and entertainment and will offer something for everyone, not just motorcycle riders, but for people of all ages. Vendors include motorcycle retailers, artisans, crafts, food, apparel and more. The primary venue for this event will be historic downtown Piqua, to include the intersecting blocks of Main and High Streets, Market St. and Canal Place. Gover Harley-Davidson, located on U.S. Route 36 just east of I-75, will also have entertainment and other activities. Both locations will have a beer garden on site. Kick off for the event will be mid-day on Friday, September 19th and festivities will continue through Saturday night, September 20th. Friday afternoon, local and regional entertainment will perform downtown – leading up to Higgins-Madewell opening for Nashville Recording Artist, Tony Rio on the downtown Jagermeister Stage. On Saturday morning, the original picture will be recreated with riders posing on the exact site as it was originally taken. A custom and vintage bike show will be held Saturday afternoon in front of the Fort Piqua Plaza, downtown. The Saturday night national headliner on the downtown stage will be Jasmine Cain, with Latter as the opener and other local bands playing all day long. Gover Harley-Davidson will also have live entertainment throughout the event, motorcycle stunt shows by Sinister Stunts, guest appearances by one or more Harley-Davidson executives and much more! Ohio’s version of Speed Week began with the BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Days July 11-13 and concluded with the Buckeye Superbike Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire July 19-20. Those of you that had the opportunity to attend all or any part of this week can attest to some the best motorcycle AMA racing has to offer. For those of you that missed it; well you missed a lot. Vintage days never ceases to amaze me. Indian motorcycle was the marquee of 2014. Some of the best vintage Indians were on display and demo rides on the newest version were offered. The swap meet was packed with vendors from all over the country and a motorcycle enthusiast could find just about any part needed to build a vintage bike. In addition there was a variety of fully operational vintage iron that was for sale. The road up and down MidOhio’s concourse was a constant parade of bikes and scooters in all sizes and makes covering many years of production. Races during Vintage Days include Motocross, Hare Scrambles, Dirt Track (held at the Ashland Fairgrounds) and Road Racing. The classes in each are numerous; from dirt to asphalt riders both men and women are of all ages and experience. The week between the headlining events is also filled as Mid-
Ohio holds additional racing and track days. WERA (Western Eastern Roadracing Association) held a two day race event Monday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 15. Mid-Ohio also had their own track day Friday, July 16. Riders often use track days to hone their skills and some ride and/or race in preparation for other events. The finale of Ohio Speed Week was Buckeye Superbike Weekend. Once we got through an uncooperative weather pattern which postponed Saturday’s events, it became Superbike Sunday and the doubleheader racing was worth the wait. Close racing throughout the field in each class kept spectators on their feet culminating in a photo finish in the second of two Superbike races as Josh Hayes edged out teammate Cameron Beaubier for the win. And let’s not forget TRO’s own Ryan Kerr pilot of the #28 Harley Davidson XR1200 who competes in the Vance & Hines Harley Davidson series. Ryan has been riding since age 4 and as they say the rest is history. But there is much more to racing than just hopping a bike. In Ryan’s own words “If it were easy everyone would do it.”

In addition to the mental and physical aspects of racing (Ryan competed with a broken bone in his foot during Superbike Weekend) juggling the responsibilities associated with racing and managing his time can be difficult. For most, racing at this level is a full time job. At this stage of his career Ryan balances a full time job, sponsor obligations (recent appearances at Ohio Bike Week and an Autism Charity event) as well as the rigorous race schedule. Ryan has given up much to pursue his dreams including missing his high school graduation ceremonies. Ryan explains that the things he cannot control such as mechanical issues that may occur on race day are frustrating but he remains focused on what he can control; his riding. He has a family that fully supports him and his dream. Mom Kelly is his biggest cheerleader realizing his talent at a young age. First and foremost she is a mom and nervously watches each race relaxing only when Ryan takes the checkered flag.

Trackside with Mike Weber
Getting on a Track
At first, every part of it is glamorous. It is something that you had wanted to do more than anything else. You looked up to the guys who already made it happen. You had to stand on your head to make it happen but you finally got it done. You are on a race track. Every aspect is new and exciting. Loading the trailer, taking care of the machine, paying impressive bills for all kinds of stuff you had no idea would cost this much, even the incredibly long hours you spent driving all over the Midwest in search of another track to turn some laps on. And then there is the actual time on the track. That is better than what you thought it could be. You are on a race track with a machine that has twice as much horsepower as you can handle. You have corner workers, safety crews, lights, fans in the stand all here to see what you are part of. You have free rein to let loose with everything you have got and people all around you encouraging you to go even faster. You have other racers all around that welcome you into the group. Initially you are amazed there are this many like minded people who have done what it takes to get out on a race track. Everything you have done up to this point suddenly seems kind of lame. In retrospect maybe going 120 mph down I-71 or trying to get your knee down on that winding road in the forest wasn’t such a great idea. It doesn’t compare to that time when the green flag 64
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
drops and the 110% that you are able to give has just been put on the table. When you really start dicing it out with other racers and you and the other guy pass each other once or twice a lap you are so far gone that when you come back to the pits you barely can remember it. Then there are the golden moments; the first time you pass somebody, the first time your knee puck scrapes the pavement, the first time you lead a lap and see nothing but an open track. There is nothing but the Zen of racing. You experience total awareness during those moments. It is unlike anything else. At some point the glamour starts to fade. You freeze your butt off in April and October. You have nights in August where it is so hot your face hurts because you have wiped the sweat out of your eyes so many times. The four hour drives each way every Saturday start to get old. Going to bed at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. every Saturday night begins to wear on you. Projects around the house don’t happen because you are either racing, working on something, buying something for the team or working extra to pay for it all. You also get tired of the fact that anything necessary for your program can only be purchased in multiples of $1,000. Your friends
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
may come and visit occasionally at the track but they don’t understand the power this place holds over everyone in the pits. And if they can’t join you at the track everyone knows a racer doesn’t have time to actually hang out with friends. Whatever extra time that is available is spent with your significant other, usually trying to convince her that it really is perfectly normal to be gone every single Saturday night from March to October. You also always seem to discuss why it is important to go to central Florida every February to race and how actually going to a beach is over rated You may recognize the difficulties but you don’t stop. The veterans at the track have been coming for nobody knows how many years. These guys are old. Unless they run out of money no one has any intention of stopping. After a while you start to understand the addiction. It is the when you are completely lost in the moment on the track. There is nothing but getting around the track. Penn State Football had a term called ‘”Crossing the Blue Line” which meant when you entered the practice field or the stadium your mind was completely focused on the job at hand. To race there can be nothing else in your mind when you cross the starting line. The purity and clarity of that short time can’t be duplicated. It is a Zen moment that, like a narcotic, pulls you back week after week. We have raced non wing sprint cars for 10 years now. I have been doing motorcycle track days for longer than that. We have also added a winged mini sprint and a UMPA Modified to team Weber Motorsports. I am normally on a racetrack 30 to 35 weekends per year. While I grew up riding dirt bikes I never had the opportunity to go racing when I was young. In between my teenage years and the formation of Weber motorsports I was a fan. I, however, always wanted to be on the track. While that is another article by itself I was able to make it happen. If you are sitting their reading this thinking how much you want to go racing, not only is it as good as you think it might be, but, it can also happen. Mike Weber, Attorney, handles motorcycle accident, automobile accident and workers compensation cases in Ohio and Kentucky. If you have any questions he can be reached at 513 621 2260 or at MLWeber@fuse.net.

Sportster Cafe Racer By Geoff Baldwin, TRO Contributor
www.returnofthecaferacers.com
Harleys continue to be the underdog in the Cafe Racer scene. Although I’ve featured plenty of Harley-Davidson Cafe Racers here before they always seen to be received with mixed opinions, many of which tend to be negative. People talk about them being too heavy or handling horribly, but I can’t help think there are many bikes made by other manufacturers that could easily be described the same way, but for some reason avoid the negative comments when they are customized. Is it because there’s a strong divide in the motorcycle scene between Harley owners and the rest of us? Or perhaps it’s because people just aren’t used to seeing a Harley customized in such a way? Regardless of what the causes may be, I for one am glad to see more Harley’s undergoing the Cafe treatment. One of the latest Harley-Davidson Cafe Racers to appear in my inbox is this beast from Matt Black Customs. Not only does 70
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
it knock all of the common complaints on the head it’s one helluva good looking machine! Here’s what Anthony Partridge from Matte Black customs had to say about their ‘Cafe Racer 57’. “The bike started life as 2 bikes. A 2003 883 Harley-Davidson Sportster and a 2006 Suzuki GSXR 600 Track bike. It was supposed to be a quick in and out project build. The plan was to just put the forks and wheels of the GSXR on the sporty, but as you can see I took it a wee bit further than that.” “The build took over a year as the project kept evolving and changing and had to be fit in around many other builds. In the end the Cafe Racer 57 became our prototype and test bed for research and development that is now going to be our own Matt Black “Cafe Racer” bolt on kit for all models of Harley-Davidson Sportster.”
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
What exactly did that build include? Well for starters Matt Black upgraded the Sporty’s 883cc v-twin to a 1200cc capacity with an Andrews cam, S&S Super E carb and a Crane Ignition system. The standard loom was replaced by a Motogadget M Unit system and a matching Motogadget Speedo was mounted to the V-rod headlight up front. The triple trees are a Matt Black custom made part as is the rear swingarm and the exhaust system that vents to a MIVV Ghibli race muffler.
“The final touch was kickass paint work done by our in house painter Ray Hill...” The stock GSXR forks have had their internals upgraded using parts from Maxtons in the UK and the WR26 rear shocks are also Maxton made. LSL clipon bars with Puig levers sit high on the fork uppers and all of the wiring has been run internally wherever possible. The wheels are stock GSXR items that have been treated to an overhaul and a fresh set of Pirelli Supercorsa SC street legal track tires. The tank started out as a aluminium Norton Manx unit that was modified to sit on the Harley frame and the tail and seat are hand made parts that will soon be available as part of the Matt Black Sportster Cafe Racer kit. “The final touch was kickass paint work done by our in house painter Ray Hill (Spray Hill), who has made a name for himself as one of the best in the industry, painting for Chip Foose and many other world class car and bike builders around the globe.” Heavy? Bad handling? How about an awesome Cafe Racer built using the old school technique of combining one bikes power with another ones awesome handling. Job well done. New Album S p o t l ig h t
Heartland by Phillip Fox Band
Release Date: Sept. 2nd By Aimee Ritz, Thunder Roads Ohio
With over 200 shows in 2014, the Phillip Fox Band has toured extensively in Ohio and across the region sharing their bootstomping, sing-along brand of “Country Fried Rock-n-Roll.” Their new album, Heartland, which will be released September 2nd, brings together a harmonious compilation of rock, blues, country, and bluegrass. Toe-tapping tracks like “Been Working Hard”, “Heartland”, and “We All Lose Somethin” made it tough to keep from dancing at my desk. Songs “I’d Be Runnin Too” and “I Ain’t Angry” show off the Rock and Roll roots of the band. And without being the slightest bit mushy, love songs “You are the Girl” and “Lovin You” make you want to pull your sweetie close. I wouldn’t be surprised a bit if I heard any of the 12 songs on the radio and I can’t wait to hear all of them live! The band’s excitement for the album is contagious when hearing them speak of their experience in the studio. Bassist Jonathan Kampfe recalled one of his most thrilling moments during the recording process: One of the most exciting times for me was working with Joe Viers (Audio Engineer - Sonic Lounge) and David Morckel (lead guitar - Phillip Fox Band) on his big solo in the up-tempo section of “I Ain’t Angry (But I’m Feelin’ Mean).” It was late in the evening and it was just Joe, David, and I tracking his lead parts for the song. There was a fair amount of pressure on David because this solo in particular is so long and sort of a “Statement solo.” - the kind of guitar solo that becomes famous like the one from “Free Bird.” David had been preparing for this session for quite a while and came with some really good ideas, but they lacked cohesiveness. It was one of those times where the three of us had to grind it out to find the right combination of ideas, direction, etc., but 40 or so takes and lots of experimenting later, we found them and his solo is perfect. It has great motives, it develops and has solid direction and transitions, and, most importantly, it sounds entirely bad-ass! Being a part of that kind of breakthrough in the studio is immensely satisfying. 72
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Always putting on a fantastic show, whether in a tiny dive or on the Ohio Bike Week stage, the band rocks the stage every chance they get. The band is hosting a number of album release parties across the state, for a complete list visit their website at http://www.phillipfoxband.com/. But take note, their hometown release party at Skully’s MusicDiner in Columbus will be unlike any other. Here’s what lead singer Phillip Fox had to say about it: The release show in Columbus on 9/5 is going to be awesome. We’ll have an 11-piece band recreating the entire album (and Motor City Blood – our previous EP) that night. We’ll have members from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Soul Satyr Horns, Todd Hamric from The Floorwalkers on keys, pedal steel, and Jonathan Kampfe (bassist) will be playing cello on a couple tunes. Our friends Andy Shaw Band and Third Degree Sideburn will be kicking things off and DJ Matty Sexton will be spinning country mashups during the breaks. So don’t miss your opportunity to catch the Phillip Fox Band on tour! You can pick up Heartland at any of the release shows listed in the events listing or you can purchase online at www. phillipfoxband.com after September 2nd. iTunes preorders opened on August 19th with an instant download of rockin’ country anthem, “You Are the Girl.” After September 2nd, fans can purchase digital versions of the album on iTunes, Amazon, and other digital music retailers.

Last month I had the good fortune of meeting a Thunder Roads Ohio Gal “Snakecharmer” over at the Wetzel MC Party in Van Wert Ohio. Our Club went up and built our own little compound and shared it with the TRO Crew. Aside from one small irritation with an undercover who decided to set up near our site with his pickup truck loaded down with thousands of dollars’ worth of recording equipment, the weekend went well. He was readily handled and that will be another article someday.. While sitting around laughing and chatting with Brothers, Ole Ladies and Friends, Snakecharmer mentioned how she enjoys reading the Tabasco Report each month. She likes the “Club Perspective” on related issues, and she happened to mention that in the past five years Women Riders have really expanded, but many don’t know all the protocols when out riding with, or being around a 3 Piece Full Patch MC, and she asked if I’d consider writing a piece on the subject. Well having received some feedback that not all our readers appreciate my despise for Crooked Gustapo Law Enforcement and Poser LE Clubs, I figured, what the Hell, May as well change it up and Pi$$ off some women this month. What I can tell you is what I know. Knowledge gained from years in the MC World wearing a 3 Piece Patch and riding with, partying with, and knowing some of the world’s largest MC’s from the 1%ers on down. In the mindset of Traditional REAL MC’s, Women’s opinions aren’t relevant in the body of the club. Does that mean they don’t matter? Not in all clubs, but yes in some. It means that in every club I have ever personally met, every 3 Piece MC was started by men, for men. It means that if you want to have your own Women’s Club, then by all means have your club and opinion, just keep it out of ours. It’s a kin to the old Treehouse Sign, “No Girls Allowed”. I can tell you that every Brother will be held accountable for the actions of his Ole Lady or Guest. It doesn’t reflect well on a Brother if his Ole Lady expresses her opinion about our club inside our walls, or in our presence. It’s just the way Clubs operate. That is not to say that they aren’t a welcome addition, and it doesn’t mean that you as a single lady or otherwise aren’t welcome to attend invited events. But be aware of simple protocols. Every single person attending an event, or visiting a clubhouse not wearing the 3 Piece Patch of that Club is a Guest. Including the Ole ladies, Girlfriends, or Mistresses of Patched Brothers. There are simple Respects that should be paid like not interrupting two patches standing aside speaking to one another, especially 78
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
if they are officers. Even I don’t do that to other clubs. It’s about managing your liquor intake so your mouth and actions don’t overstep your welcome. I’ve had the unfortunate task of telling a close and solid friend that his Ole Lady F’d up and not only wore her own welcome out, she also wore his out. Not a good conversation to have to have. Listen, I don’t think for a moment that many Brothers don’t get an ear full of their Ole Ladies opinions about the club when at home, but that’s his problem, don’t make it mine! Probably one of the most difficult things is keeping quiet about who or what you see and hear while at a clubhouse or otherwise in the presence of a club. You would be best served to not even share what you see or hear with another brothers Ole lady, or it could very well be the last time you are welcome, and/ or worse yet, it may get your Old man bounced out of the club. If you are a Lady who enjoys hanging out with Bikers and MC Clubs, then I’d say by all means go when invited. You typically will be safer with them than in any bar alone in most cases. But remember the old adage that God gave you two ears and one mouth. Use the latter wisely. If you’re out on the highway as Snakecharmer mentioned to me, it’s not wise to try and speed past an MC posted up and rolling down the highway. I’d suggest you just let off the throttle and enjoy the ride, from about 100 yards behind. If they are rolling real slowly, then they might wave you past them. If invited to ride with them in a pack or even a small group, it’s best to check with whoever invited you or the Road Captain or an Officer where you should be in the pack. Every Club is different with that. Snakecharmer is a seasoned Woman Rider, and knows Respect. She mentioned to me how when her and her other Lady friend had returned solo to the compound at Wetzel she saw me sitting with another Patched Club Member “one on one” having a chat. She stopped and looked at me and when I looked up and saw them and waved them in, she knew it was cool to enter. That’s a lady who knows club protocols. Most of everything in this article really goes for any guest or citizen in the presence of an REAL MC Club. I’d suggest you come, and enjoy the company and the MC lifestyle, just Know Your Place. Thanks for Reading! Tabasco Tabasco.TRO@gmail.com Have a different opinion? Let me hear it! Send me an email and I’ll share it with the Editor for possible submission in the magazine if you’d like.

Firearms Training: How do I get ready for my next class? By Gary Evens, Buckeye Firearms Association
I’ve noted that many students, upon completing a basic handgun course, are eager to obtain additional training...at least that is what they say when I tell them about the next course in the sequence that they might want to take and when it will be offered. Unfortunately, few of them follow-up and actually take that course. One of the reasons may be the passage of time, because I tell students that before they take an advanced handgun class they should first practice what they have learned in the basic course until they are proficient in applying them. An analogy that Dave Spaulding, a prominent nationally-known firearms instructor, uses is that of a bucket filled with water. Training fills your “bucket” (i.e., it provides you with skills and proficiency in using a firearm). The “water”—your skills and proficiency—will be at the maximum level in your “bucket” at the moment you complete your training session but will immediately begin to decrease from that time forward just like having a hole in your “bucket” would allow the “water” to drain out. To keep your “bucket” full, you must replenish the contents and you do this though practice and additional training. Seeking additional training not only keeps your “bucket” full, but it also increases the size of your “bucket”. That training may be in the form of taking one or more classes from a firearms instructor or watching one or more of the many training videos that demonstrate advanced handgun techniques. While these videos are useful, the one thing they cannot do is objectively measure how well you are able to apply the techniques. Only someone that is already proficient in those skills can provide that assessment and give you the feedback you need, and that usually means going to a qualified firearms instructor. So, at some point you will need to take one or more firearms courses. I recommend you try to do this about once every year or so. Most firearms instructors use a building-block approach to teaching shooting skills. Subsequent courses start where the last course left off with only a small amount of time devoted to a “refresher”. So, it is incumbent on the students to come to the advanced classes prepared. Instructors just cannot afford to take the time to provide students that come to classes lacking in fundamental shooting skills and still address the advanced topics that the rest of the class has come to get trained on. Basic handgun classes, whether they are for concealed carry or just general handgun knowledge, cover firearms safety 84
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
and the fundamentals of shooting—grip, stance, sight-alignment/ sight-picture, hold control, breath control, trigger control, and follow-through. This is the foundation that all other shooting classes build from. Therefore, students taking those other classes must be proficient in the fundamentals as a prerequisite for attending the advanced classes. You develop that proficiency through practice— both dry-fire and live-fire. You can practice all of the fundamentals during dry-fire without actually firing a single round of ammunition—except for the part of the follow-through that deals with recoil management. (If you do fire a round of ammunition during your dry-fire practice you have done something drastically wrong!) During dry-fire practice you can concentrate on individual elements of shooting without spending a lot of money on ammunition or time traveling to/from a shooting range. Subsequent live-fire practice enables you to verify that you can properly apply the fundamentals by placing bullets on the target at your point-of-aim. So, what is an acceptable level of proficiency in applying the fundamentals before you should consider taking an advanced handgun class? Being able to place all of your shots on an 81⁄2 X 11-inch target from a distance of 5 yards is probably a good standard to achieve before seeking out advanced training. This is an accuracy standard. You will begin to develop speed as part of your advanced training. You should expect the advanced class will “stress” you by “pushing” you to do things that you do not necessarily think you can do. This usually comes in the form of reducing the amount of time allowed for you to deliver accurate hits to a target, reducing the size of the target you must hit, and/or changing the distance to the target. While many students have not yet selected their own handgun when they take the basic course, by the time you are ready to attend an advanced course you should have your own gun and you should be proficient in its operation. Just as you will be “stressed” during the advanced course, so will your handgun— and this is a good thing. Your self-defense handgun must be absolutely reliable; it must go “bang” every time you expect it to when you press the trigger. (One of the reasons I try to take an advanced handgun courses once each year is to “stress” my various defensive handguns to make sure I can rely on them. My
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
“standard” is to fire 200-300 rounds through each gun with no malfunctions before I will consider it to be reliable enough for daily self-defense use.) During an advanced class, you will be pressing the trigger a lot more than you would probably do during your regular practice sessions. Issues with your handgun’s reliability—either with the gun itself or the ammunitionyou are using—will quickly come to the surface during an advanced handgun class, as will issues with your equipment (holsters, ammo pouches, etc.). What should you expect to learn during advanced handgun training? Each instructor’s offering will be somewhat different, but in general the following topics are covered at the shooting range: • Different shooting positions—standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, prone, etc. • Different grips—two-handed, one-handed (strong hand), onehanded(weak hand) • Different ready positions • Reloading your handgun with ammunition • Clearing handgun malfunctions Drawing a handgun from a holster— both open carry and concealed carry • Moving before shooting—left, right, front, back, diagonal • Moving while shooting—left, right, front, back, diagonal • Shooting at multiple targets • Shooting targets at multiple distances Shooting at targets of different sizes • Shooting at moving targets • Shooting around barricades • Use of cover and concealment • Situational/threat awareness Some instructors may include additional topics, like team tactics and communicating while engaged in a gunfight, and
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
they may divide their advanced training into multiple offerings so students do not have to absorb too much new information in a very short amount of time. Each of these topics is important for you to know because you will not know what the situation will be when you are confronted with a violent encounter. The environment and your attacker will dictate the situation and your response. Your goal will be to survive the encounter. To do this you must either escape from the attacker or stop them before they can inflict harm to you and/or your family members, friends, and others in the area of the attack. Are you ready to take the next step in advancing your self-defense skills? If so, find an instructor that offers the training you need to enable you to improve gun skills and proficiency. We spend a lot of time on the road criss-crossing the state for Thunder Roads, covering events and meeting with people; and I quickly learned that if I was going to get a chance to ride at all – it was going to have to be on a bike that could carry some gear. My softail just wasn’t cutting it, and I was finding myself driving a truck far more than I wanted to. So I took the plunge and picked up a few “touring bikes” for the magazine crew. We decided to go two different routes and really see how they compared over time. In both cases we opted for “veteran rides” that we could personalize over time and possibly overhaul as project features. So, TRO added a BMW R1100RT and a 1999 H-D Road Glide to the family. Both are powerful long distance runners with plenty of storage space, but each has its own unique personality and ride. It’s the Road Glide that I’d like to focus on here as we begin upgrading and doing work needed to simply maintain her as we pile on the miles in service to the magazine. The 1999 Road Glide features the Twin Cam 88 which many consider one of Harley’s best engines – but it has its challenges. Foremost, these bikes are known for having issues with their cam bearings. When we picked it up she had about 20k miles and everything looked strictly stock. There were no signs of trouble, but the cams would certainly be something we wanted to address early on. So, here is our Road Glide as we picked her up. She’s a beautiful lady with lots of leather. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure

about all the fringe; but it quickly grew on me. I kept saying I was going to remove it – but more than one brother dismissed that as nonsense. “It’s you.” After some thought, I guess I decided that it really was – so its stayed. The rest of the bike, though, is fair game; and I’d like to hear your input. I’ve taken her down to Daytona, out to Sturgis, and all across Ohio. She’s proven herself as a reliable, fun to ride bike – but the years are starting to show. Like the phoenix of lore, it’s time for her to be reborn. We’ve started with some basic upgrades and changes, which we will cover over the next few months; but there’s still a lot of options left to consider. If you have ideas or something you’d like to do to the bike, let us know. It’s important that she remain a reliable, practical, every day rider. So far, we’ve changed out the windshield, replaced the pipes and mufflers, and upgraded the amp n speakers. We will go over each step and share what we’re doing and why. Our thought is that many of you have bikes in similar stages and not everyone has the dollars or interest in a new bike. So we will show you what we’re doing in hopes it might inspire others to reconsider their “veteran rides”. We will also review some of the manufacturers and suppliers out there. Not everyone is the same, and we will shoot straight on what we find. If there’s someone you’d like to recommend – or you’re in the business and would like to get involved; shoot us an email at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
PHASE ONE: WINDSHIELD
Our Road Glide came with a small darkly tinted windshield that really seemed to accomplish absolutely nothing. It was so dark that it might as well have been opaque – but that didn’t really matter since I would have had to be laying on the tank to look through it, it was that low. It seemed to redirect none of the air, but it seemed especially effective at throwing all the rain from the fairing right into my face. The previous owner also packed what apparently might have been the stock windshield, but this was discolored and seemed more suitable for sledding on than anything else. After a minimal amount of research it seemed clear that there were OEM windshields, there were the Klock Werks FLARE windshields, and then an array of aftermarket imitations of one or the other. The more I read, though, it was clear that the Klock Werks FLARE was worth further consideration. If you’re not familiar with Klock Werks, they are worth checking out. If not for their products, the folks running the company are pretty interesting themselves. Brian and Laura Klock are the driving force behind this dynamic company based in Mitchell, South Dakota; and they are two of the most interesting personalities in the motorcycle industry. Laura Klock in particular is involved in countless charitable endeavors – including her own foundation “Helping with Horsepower”. It was these charitable efforts and the lure of the Bonneville flats that led to the development of the FLARE windshields. During speed trials at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, Laura Klock noticed that her Road Glide’s fairing was lifting away from the ground at higher speeds – causing a dangerous wobble. This was a real concern – especially as the bike was traveling at over 125mph. It also left them with the realization that this lifting was almost certainly present at lower speeds but just not as noticeable. So the Klock Werks team decided that the solution was a new windshield that served as more of an “air-management device” than simply something to block the bugs. The result of their efforts is the FLARE windshield, a patented design that incorporates “hips, lips, and at least one flip” in an effort to redirect the wind away from the rider while creating additional downward force on the front-end of the motorcycle – according to the folks at Klock Werks. Of course, that’s what it really boils down to – does it do what it’s supposed to? I decided to find out. This past spring I brought the Road Glide down to Daytona for Bike Week, and I was fortunate enough to run into Brian Klock at Destination Daytona. We talked about the various options – including what size we wanted of the FLARE. It comes in three sizes – 16”, 12”, and 8”. I opted for the 12”, as I still enjoy a bit of wind and the ability to see over the top of the shield. The 12” FLARE is available in Clear, Tint, and Dark Smoke. The shorter 8” FLARE is also available in several opaque options – including black, chrome, and black chrome; since you really don’t need to be able to see through it. The taller 16” model is designed for taller riders or long distance riders – and is only available in clear and tint since you need to be able to see through it. I opted for the Dark Smoke, which seemed to blend in just fine with the black fairing – yet allowed me to see through as needed. We quickly swapped out the windshields and off I went to see if I could tell a difference.
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Let me preface, that I was coming off a short windshield that didn’t really do much. That being said – I think that the impact was immediately noticeable and far more than I had expected. I somewhat accidently found myself on the “Bee Line” headed to Orlando at one point, so I let loose a little in order to cut down on the time spent taking a lap around central Florida. Clipping along through central Florida, my bike felt far more stable as I cut around semi’s and pushed the limits just a bit. In terms of aesthetics, I think that the FLARE is also the perfect complement to the Road Glide’s unique nose. While the distinct shark nose might otherwise appear dated – the unique design of the FLARE flows seamlessly into the fairing and gives it a very modern look. It’s also worth noting that the Lexan® Polycarbonate FLARE windshields are made right here in the US of A by a company that seems about as charitable and supportive of the motorcycle community as anyone could be. So we certainly recommend you consider the Klock Werks FLARE both because it’s a great product and there are great folks behind it. For more information on the FLARE, visit http://www. kustombaggers.com/. For more information on the charitable efforts of Klock Werks, visit: http://www.helpingwithhorsepower.com/

F un ny St u f f b e cause ev er y o ne needs a goo d l aug h n o w a nd t h en... A Southern biker was visiting a Yankee relative in Boston over the holidays. He went to a large party and met a pretty co-ed. He was attempting to start up a conversation with the line, “Where does you go to school?” The coed, of course, was not overly impressed with his grammar or southern drawl, but did answer his question. “Yale,” she replied. The biker took a big, deep breath and shouted, “WHERE DOES YOU GO TO SCHOOL?” A biker, who worked on a horse farm, got pulled over by a state trooper for speeding. Since it was a rural road with no traffic, the biker tried hard to get the trooper to let him off with a warning. Instead, the trooper started to lecture the biker about his speed, and in general began to give the biker a big hassle. Finally, the trooper got around to writing out the ticket, and as he was doing that he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The biker said, “Having some problems with Circle Flies there, are ya?” The trooper stopped writing the ticket and said--”Well yeah, if that’s what they are--I never heard of Circle Flies.” So the biker says--”Well, Circle Flies are common on farms. See, they’re called Circle Flies because they’re almost always found circling around the back end of a horse.” The trooper says, “Oh,” and goes back to writing the ticket. After a minute he stops and says, “Hey - Are you trying to call me a horse’s azz?” The biker says, “Oh no, officer. I have too much respect for law enforcement and police officers to even think about calling you a horse’s azz.” The trooper says, “Well, that’s a good thing,” and goes back to writing the ticket. As the trooper hands him the ticket, the biker says, “Hard to fool them flies though.” A biker and his ole lady are shopping in their local Wal-Mart. The biker picks up a case of Miller Lite and puts it in their cart. ‘What do you think you’re doing?’ asks the ole lady. ‘They’re on sale, only $10 for 24 cans’, he replies. ‘Put them back, it’s a waste of money’, she demands, and so they carry on shopping. A few aisles further on along, she picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket. What do you think you’re doing?’ asks the bike. ‘It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,’ she replies. The Biker retorts: ‘So does 24 cans of Miller Lite and it’s half the price.

A tough looking group of Bikers were out riding when they saw a girl about to jump off a bridge so they stopped. The leader, a big burly man gets off his bike and says “what are you doing?” “I’m going to commit suicide” she said While he did not want to appear insensitive, he didn’t want to miss an opportunity so he asked...”well before you jump, why don’t you give me a kiss?” So she does....And it was a long deep lingering kiss. After she’s finished, the biker says, “ Wow! Tha was the best kiss I have ever had. That’s a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why are you committing suicide?” “My parents don’t like me dressing up like a girl” Father Tim Dempsey was making his rounds visiting his parishoners by riding his OLD motorcycle to their homes, when his bike suddenly died, and coasted to a stop alongside the road. Father Tim checked the fuel tank, the gas filter, the plugs, but could find nothing wrong. He stepped on the kick start, gave it his best effort, but no joy, the bike didn’t fire. Gritting his teeth grimly, Father Tim gave it another valiant try, but again the bike failed to turn over. About that time, a wee lad approached Father Tim and asked what he was doing. “Tryin’ to start me bike, my son”, the good Father replied, jumping on the crank once more, with no effect. - “My pa has an old bike like that”, the kid offered. “If you want it to start, you have cuss at it while you’re jumping up and down”. - “Well, I’m a priest and I cannot cuss. Why, it’s been so long since I was saved by Jesus, I do not even remember how to cuss”, the priest said, smiling at the youth. - “Well”, the kid said, turning to walk away, “just keep on trying to kick start that pig, and it’ll come back to yah!” The Barber’s Wife This guys sticks his head into a barber shop and asks “How long before I can get a haircut?”. The barber looks around the shop and says “About 2 hours”. The guy leaves. A few days later the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks “How long before I can get a haircut?”. The barber looks around the shop full of customers and says “About 2 hours”. The guy leaves. A week later the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks “How long before I can get a haircut?”. The barber looks around the shop and says “About an hour and a half”. The guy leaves. The barber looks over at a friend in his shop and says “Hey Bill. Follow that guy and see where he goes”. In a little while Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asks “Bill where did he go when he left here?”. Bill looks up and says “To your house”.
