FROM THE PUBLISHER September and October are my favorite times of year to ride in Ohio. And no, it’s not just because of the colorful leaves. While the earlier summer months often get all the attention as the “riding season”, the later months are the ones that really get me excited. The weather seems to always be much better for riding and there are so many great places to go. With the slightly cooler temperatures, especially at night, it’s much more comfortable to wear a leather jacket and jeans – much more appropriate riding attire than the t-shirt and shorts that July and August seem to call for. There are also so many great events and destinations to hit as well. Labor Day weekend is a great kick-off to the “Fall” riding season in my mind – with the Easyriders Rodeo (page 77) and Hudson Leather’s (page 85) Labor Day Stampede drawing thousands of riders to each corner of the state. That’s followed up by one of my absolute favorite events of the year – Thunder on the Strip in Geneva and our annual Bike Show at Sportsterz! (page 1). Then there are several weekends of great rides and local get togethers before we all head to Oregonia for The Devil’s Staircase Hillclimb Weekend. (page 57, 90-91). This year they’ve expanded “The World-Famous Party on the Hill” to two days and officially added camping at the event! As co-hosts of sorts we’ve been doing that for years there, but it’s GREAT to see the event grow and looking forward to even more friends around the campfire Saturday night! If you’ve never been to the Devil’s Staircase – you’re missing out! It’s the other bookend to Ohio Bike Week really kicking things off Memorial Weekend. There’s just something about riding through Ohio in Autumn. The air’s a little crisper and there are so many new great “scents” to the air as you’re riding through the rolling hills or farmlands. And, yes – the changing colors and tapestry of our landscape is really something you need to take a moment and appreciate. Sure, some of our southern friends love the fact that they don’t have the snow and winter “no-ride” months, but they also don’t have the Fall – and the cooler months leading up to it. It’s more than a fair trade-off in my mind. Plus, we need a little down time to break down the bike in the living room and get the tins painted, etc.. So – get out there and RIDE! Make the most of Ohio’s TRUE RIDING SEASON! There’s plenty of great places to go and things to see. And of course, Thunder Roads will be out there with ya! Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the road!

NATIONAL FOUNDERS

Clearly, not everyone shares this approach – especially restaurant and bar owners who seem to welcome the pending “end of the world” (riding season) by seemingly rolling up the carpets and shutting down their bike nights and other motorcycle-oriented promotions. To them, I’d simply ask “Why?” There are still months of great riding before the real snow comes – why shut things down? If you’ve got a favorite riding spot that does this, make it a point to let them know that you’re still riding! Even during the winter – take the time and make sure that they realize you’re a rider and you’re still coming out and supporting your favorite “ride stops” even if you’re not riding. You can help me dispel my own personal favorite myth about riders in Ohio – that we all simply hibernate or fly south after Labor Day. Nope. We’re all still here. See ya out on the road!

THE IRON COWBOY The 2018 Bikers Ball raises THOUSANDS for Adults with Disabilities in Northeast Ohio Thunder Roads Ohio and TRO Advisory Board Member Ian Abrams worked with the Hard Rock Rocksino at Northfield Park to create a BIKER’S BALL themed event and packages centered around Jack Russell’s Great White who was performing at Northfield Park. TRO Publisher Derek Smith and Abrams collaborated on the initial concept for the event and The Hard Rock Rocksino stepped up and actively supported and contributed to the cause. When it was all said and done, the single day event raised more than $7,300 for North Coast Community Homes in its first year. Work is currently underway to develop a 2019 Bikers Ball, again supporting North Coast Community Homes. For more information follow the Thunder Roads Ohio Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio) or visit the website and Blog there. (www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com) If you’d like to help out with the planning or possibly become a sponsor – please email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail. com for more information. North Coast Community Homes (NCCH) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides high-quality, community-based homes throughout Northeast Ohio for people with developmental disabilities, severe mental illness, and other disabilities. NCCH manages more than 220 homes serving more than 1,000 men and woman. You can find out more at ncch.org

Jamie Brown, Chief Marketing Officer for the Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park presents a check for $7,329 to D.A. Smith of Thunder Roads Ohio and Jamie Van Doren from North Coast Community Home. Neither Thunder Roads Ohio or Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC retained any of the money raised that night from the event.

TRO Halloweekends Cedar Point Run Thunder Roads Ohio has teamed up with our friends at Ohio Bike Week to create a weekend get-together at Cedar Point to take part in their Halloween themed “HalloWeekends” and then close out the night with a party at the World Famous Barrel House Saloon.

For more information on this and other Thunder Roads Events – visit, like, and follow our Facebook Page. www. facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio There is an event created for the weekend, which will allow you to stay current on what the plans are.

Tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 20th – Their Special rates for the weekend will be offered by partner hotels and transportation will be available between the hotels and the Barrel House Saloon. As part of the 2018 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN, Thunder Roads Ohio will be awarding over 50 Cedar Point tickets to those checking in at BTR Stops or checking in through social media by using the hashtag #TRO. ATTENTION – Photographers or Motorcycle Enthusiasts with Cameras! We might have an opportunity that’s worth considering. Thunder Roads Ohio has opportunities for those interested in attending motorcycle vents across Ohio or even just in your own area – and taking pictures! You don’t have to be a professional photographer or even have a fancy camera. You just need to have a passion for riding or photography – or even better, both!

We have events throughout the year, all across Ohio and even the US – that we would love to feature in our magazine and online. There’s no way we can cover it all ourselves – so, we are looking to add more contributors to the team. It’s also a great way to help promote charitable events in your area and do your part to help develop your local riding community! For more information email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

Special VETERANS EDITION of Thunder Roads Ohio coming in November 2018 In observance of Veterans Day (November 11th) and as part of TRO’s ongoing commitment to those that have served and sacrificed to our country – the November Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio will be themed around the US Armed Forces, those that have served, and the organizations offering assistance to those veterans in need.

Work is currently underway to compile a directory of organizations and agencies offering assistance and services to Veterans in need. This information will be shared in the November Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio and online through ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Ultimately, it is our intention to create a special “Ride Guide Calendar” styled resource focused on our veterans. Veterans events, benefits, and organizations will all be featured in this guide covering the vast majority of Ohio. It is our hope to collaborate with different veterans organizations – both motorcycle oriented and not, to compile the information and produce this unprecedented resource. We envision being able to hand someone in need a pocket-sized guide and make a difference by making everyone aware of the resources available to them. There are opportunities for interested organizations and companies to become involved and help sponsor this endeavor. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

It is our hope that we create this Guide and offer it free of charge to not only the vets we distribute it to – but also allow local non-profit veterans organizations to promote their legitimate events and services offered to those FREE of charge as well. For more information on the upcoming November VETERANS Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio or how you might become a sponsor, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

7/9/2018 Derek & TRO Family, Wow. I was shocked to see photos of the old castle on the cover of the July mag (O.S.R.). I did time there in the old cast block which was the “world largest, all steel 2-man cell block”. I did over 3 years on Northeast 2nd range, cell 22, from 1979-1983. My Ohio State Reformatory member was #110-288. There was no hot water, used “stingers” back then, cold as hell too. The showers were called the car wash. I even learned to box there. They also filmed Harry & Walter Goes to New York, and old James Caan and Elliott Gould played in it…also part of Sylvester Stalone’s movie, Lock Up, was filmed there at O.S.R (Loved the red mustang car scene!) As for the Shawshank Redemption I was in the new joint, Mansfield C.I. and was a part of it filmed in 1993 when Warden Dennis Baker ran everything, and he too was in the movie—the black dude on the bus scene. (Check the credits). Tim Robins was cool, so was most of the cast. Morgan Freeman was snotty and stuck up. He would not talk to real convicts. Man, I wish I could be a part of Inkcarceration, and I hope it turns out great for everyone. A lot of good bikers went through O.S.R. many of my outlaw brothers, even my father (Big Al Brown) AKA “Top Hat”, Jim Nolan, David Allen Coe, my sponsor, James Elmoe “Big Moe” – RIP. And good brothers from Iron Horseman, Drifters, Northcoast O.L.s and other M.C.s.

!

The vast majority of these shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include the “people’s choice” as well as a professional eye – preventing it just being a popularity contest. Some shows, though, are Judged Shows – with the guest votes simply going towards the People’s Choice Awards. All Thunder Roads Shows feature trophies and placards to recognize the bikes and winners, with special prizes being added in some shows in consideration of the location and hosts. The Best of Show Bikes and TOP Class Winners from the Bike Show Series are then invited to take part in the Championship Shows. This year’s shows will feature a broader range of classes including CUSTOM and RADICAL BAGGERS, GARAGE BUILDS, TRIKES, as well as VINTAGE, CUSTOM PAINT, and IMPORT categories. All will compete on the by the water, as the show is being held once more downtown on Sunday, For more information and to register, visit ThunderRoadsOhio.com.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT To My ABATE Friends, I hope all have had a great summer of riding. My miles are way down as I have been very busy. With this new position I have needed to drive the car, but that should be changing with experience. You will be seeing a lot more of me on the bike in the future. Please look at the cover of this Outspokin for something new. This and the next three issues will be covering two months. This is to save money during the slower months in the winter. It will go back to monthly issues in May 2019. We are considering new advertising rates and strategies to attract new ads to help pay for the magazine. Although we only charge you $10 for a year of the magazine, it costs more than that to produce and mail. Advertisers help bridge the gap. The products trailer has been at Ohio Bike Weekend, Freedom Rally and Wetzelland. The trailer has been stored by my house and we have not been running it back and forth to Columbus, saving a bunch of gas money. It has been reorganized and seems to be working better. The next event it will be at is Bike Raffle Day at Margaritaville. It will go back to Columbus after that and stay for the winter. I would like to thank Ed, Kay, Kolman, Monica and Mark for their hard work manning the trailer at Wetzelland. We did have the raffle bike there also and everyone did a great job covering both. We did not make Vintage Days because we could not get volunteers. We just cannot do weekend events with only two members stepping up. At this time, we will not be at Easy Rider Rodeo in Chillicothe because of not enough help. If someone wants to take charge of the trailer and get the volunteers to work it, we will get the trailer there. As we do every September we will be going to the MRF’s Meeting of The Minds. This year the event is in Denver, Colorado. With the lineup of workshops, I’m hoping to bring back new and great ideas to motivate us into the future. Currently, at the writing of this article, we have four members making the trip. Anyone interested in going, get in touch with me soon. At the office we had a little water leak, compliments of the place next door so we ended up giving the office a good cleaning. Now it’s done and looking good. As I have found out since I have been at the office, we do have visitors. They come in to do Ride On’s Dice Game and sign up for the 16 16

Thunder Run. This gives us a chance to get new members and sell raffle tickets. Our current members also stop in to renew their membership or just to talk. We decorated the wall in the front with many of the Proclamations we received in May for Motorcycle Awareness Month. To every member reading this article who does not regularly go to Region meetings, I would like to hear from you. As members

Mike Stock COB & Safety and Education Director mikestock419@gmail.com 419-654-5446

and/or just concerned riders, my phone and email are open to all. If you go to meetings, you already have a forum to talk with someone about any issues. I notice that when I go to events, people talk to me about many problems. Some I can’t fix but lots of them I can. Please contact me and I will try my best to get you an answer. Bringing All Riders to the Table,

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, It has been a great summer for getting out and putting miles on. So far, the majority of us have been riding safe and as an advocate of safety, I want to thank all of you. As many of you know we have legislators that want us to lose many of our freedoms and they may win if we have another bad year of fatalities as we did two years ago. If you can talk to just one person and prevent a crash, you may save us from getting another law that takes away my freedom. Now for the numbers, remembering these are the first of August stats. In 2017 we had 2,269 crashes with 79 fatalities, and by the end of last year we had 149 fatalities. Now in 2018 we have 1,738 crashes with 66 fatalities. It’s helpful to compare to one of our bad years like 2016 with 2,416 crashes and 105 Fatalities and finishing the year at 200 fatalities. Ride SMART as if your freedoms depend on it. When I took my first Motorcycle Ohio Training Course I had been riding for about 20 years. I learned enough that I talked my dad into going that same year. That training managed to keep him riding to the age of 74. Training even for someone with experience can and will save your life or keep you from serious injury. Go online and sign up at Motorcycle.Ohio.gov so you can learn how to Ride SMART. The Ohio Drivers Training Program asked me to make a presentation at their driver training school to update them on Motorcycle Awareness and Safety.

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

I updated them on what we would like younger drivers to know about what we are doing and why we do it. In the program they teach to new drivers, they have to cover Motorcycle Awareness. I just gave them a little more information than what they have in their script. I let them know that if we have someone in the area, we can come into the classroom and do a presentation on Motorcycle Awareness by an actual motorcyclist. As many of you know I ride a 2007 FLHTC H/D and I take care of her. So, when I gave her a bath and started to wax from the back forward, because last time I started front to back, I found a broken bracket on the right and then the same support broken on the left. Even if you don’t service your own bike you need to check her over and a good way to do that is to wax it. Hunt for shiny, worn parts and things out of alignment. And while you are down on the ground look at those tires not only for wear but for something stuck in them. For ideas of more things to look for, check your owner’s manual under maintenance schedule. If I can help in any way, to get more signs out, more magnets on cars, more banners up on fences and more Awareness - get in touch with me. At the office we have all this stuff in stock or we know who to contact to get it. My next big stop is the MRF’s Meeting of the Minds out in Denver. Hope to bring back some good information to pass on. Ride Within Your Limits

CMA Believing Is Not Faith We attended the CMA Ohio State Rally this past weekend and had an awesome time in fellowship and renewing relationships. It was great to see our old friends and meet new ones as well. I really enjoyed the messages our National Evangelist shared and the special insights the Open Doors Ministry Partner shared with us. The culmination of the “RFS Pink Challenge” resulted in my hair being pink for the day, even though it was intended to be that way a bit longer. I’m not sure if it was the dye, the weather, or the condition of my hair that caused the short term of the pink staying in. I do know some people had way too much fun making my hair pink for as long as it lasted. All for a good cause, supporting RFS. Our title is “Believing Is Not Faith” and some might be confused by that statement. What it comes down to is this: we may believe an item will do a certain thing or allow us to accomplish a certain thing, but that is not what our faith is in. We may believe our doctor can help us when we are ill but our faith is not in that doctor; we may believe a chair will hold us up but our faith is not in that chair; we may believe our vehicle will start but our faith is not in that vehicle. Believe is to accept something as true or feel sure of the truth of, or accept the statement of someone as true, or hold something as an opinion, or to think or suppose. You might say it this way, the policeman believed John’s story or, the policeman didn’t believe Sue or didn’t want to know or, the policeman believed we had already met. (Look out for that last one) Faith, on the other hand, is to have complete trust or confidence in someone or something; strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion; the Christian faith; a strongly held belief or theory. I like how the Bible describes faith in Hebrews 11:1,2 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.” NASB

Christian Motorcyclists Association COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a nondenominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com

To get the full understanding make sure you see it says “faith is the assurance of”. It’s not a, I think so or I believe so or probably, but it is the “assurance of” meaning it is a positive declaration intended to give confidence. In other words, it is true. Faith is “the conviction of” meaning it has the quality of showing that one is firmly convinced of what one believes or says. In other words, what the Bible says about God, Creation and Jesus is all truth. I may not have been there when the Heavens and earth were made, nor when the animals and man were made, nor when Jesus was born, nor when Jesus was crucified, nor when Jesus rose from the dead, nor was I there when Jesus ascended into Heaven, but, I have faith, that what is recorded in the Bible is truth beyond a shadow of a doubt. 18 18

KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

BUCKET LIST! STURGIS 2018! Thankfully when you are retired time isn’t much of a determining factor and the adrenaline remains as you want to get there yesterday. However as newly retired guys my husband, his brother and our nephew (teachers have summers off) found out quickly the trip was eventful from the start. From the driveway to the entrance of the Ohio Turnpike in North Ridgeville is about 12 miles. On the way right? Wrong. Delay #1 - A flat tire on the trailer at the entrance to the turnpike in North Ridgeville. Tire changed, spare tire on and off to get a new tire. Still not underway as running lights on trailer aren’t working due to the blown tire. Fixed those and now they are off. STURGIS OR BUST!!

may have dampened the roads it didn’t dampen their spirits. Thousands of bikes lined the main street in Sturgis. Cover bands and top named entertainment were everywhere. Iron Horse Campground, Buffalo Chip, Full Throttle Saloon. Always something to do and see and THE RIDES. The rides were the best part!

There are some new adventures the retired guys have planned. Time to enjoy the rides that working full time didn’t always allow. Time to check off another box on the “bucket list”. Sturgis - these guys recommend it highly whether you are retired or not. ‘Til next month

Even for retired guys, all good things must come to an end. The bikes and the gear were packed in the trailer and the drive home began almost as it started--the tire on the other side of the trailer blew out. (Hindsight is 20/20...should have bought two new tires at the start).

Delay #2 Driving rain in Illinois. Delay #3Stuck three hours in traffic in Minnesota for a truck fire...NO NOT THEIRS! Sure hoping the bad luck is now out of the way. The old guys and the kid are exhausted. They need a hot meal, a beer and a bed. Day one ends in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Compared to day one, day two is a piece of cake. An uneventful seven or so hour drive to the Iron Horse Campground in Sturgis, North Dakota. Accommodations are great. Nice site with electric and a beautiful view from the campsite of Bear Butte in the distance. Rick was a great host giving them a complete list of things to do, places to see. Itching to ride and check out the surrounding areas the bikes are unloaded and they are off. Although the Rally in Sturgis is part of the experience, riding in that part of the country was the main thing on the bucket list. Rides to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, the #10 Saloon in South Dakota and Devils Tower in Wyoming were a must. Riding Needles Highway through Iron Creek Tunnel and Needles Eye Tunnel blasted through granite walls was one of the unexpected pleasures of the week. The beautiful winding roads and the sound of motorcycles and fellow riders were everywhere. A couple of pop up showers to weather and while the rain 20

MORE STOPS! MORE PRIZES! YEAR ROUND STOPS! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2018 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you win by simply getting out to ride!

HERE’s HOW YOU WIN!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Some will have Ride Stop Clipboard for you to sign in on. You simply have to write down your Ride Card #, your name, and your zip code. Most have moved to digital check-in’s, though. It’s quick and even easier – see below. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops!

Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard, just like a regular Ride Stop.

“MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP!” – NEW FOR 2018!

For 2018, we’ve added another option to WIN – by which Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! And it’s SIMPLE – 1. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AT THE LOCATION. 2. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER.

3. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #TRO 4. It’s that simple. FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS.

For more information, visit us online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com 22

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number on our website and sometimes in the magazine as well. both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in's for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long. • ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday) SOCIAL MEDIA WINNERS Each month, the TRO Crew will randomly select WINNERS that have checked in through their social media with the #TRO hashtag. If their Ride Card is visible, we will register the Card Number as a winner and possibly send notification through email. In most cases, though, we will contact through your social media and the winning post. Digital winners have 15 days to contact TRO in regards to the prizes. In some cases, there may be less time due to constraints regarding the prize(s) – such as tickets for a particular concert.

It's really that simple!

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Make sure you like us at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number!

Just Get Out and RIDE!

This is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

MORE ROADS (including tracks and trails) TO HARLEY-DAVIDSON Harley-Davidson announces yet more new models and the gloves are off! D.A. Smith, Thunder Roads Ohio Almost two years ago Harley-Davidson kicked off 2017 with the announcement by CEO Matt Levatich that they would be introducing 50 new motorcycles over the next five years. This announcement didn’t really include too many specifics as to the direction of the new bikes, other than a few statements by Levatich implying that there were some exciting things to come. “I’ve never been more excited about our product pipeline in my 22 years here at Harley-Davidson,” Levatich he stated back then. (Jan. 2017) He talked about the Project Livewire Bike, their new Milwaukee Eight Engine – but few additional details on what was to come. But he did state, “If people were excited about the projects I just named, they haven’t seen anything yet.” Since then, Harley has indeed made some dramatic announcements and changes. They introduced a completely new platform and line of models – dubbed the “Softails” that included several models previously within the Dyna family which was being phased out. These new models were almost entirely new bikes in many regards – especially the Fat Bob, which was easily one of the most exciting new Harley’s

42 42

introduced in more than 20 years. It had many of the iconic features and styling cues of the traditional Harley cruisers – but if you closed your eyes… or simply looked forward (much safer) while you were riding, you would hardly recognize the way the bike handled. Ok, so it certainly sounded like a Harley as well, but the way it handled had the national motorcycle press comparing it to Ducati Diavel’s and other high-performance bikes that really had never been mentioned in the same discussion as the “Softails” of old. Many thought that it was an interesting approach at the time. Introduce a totally new frame with incredible handling and improved performance aspects – but mask the new focus by adopting the older, established model names for the new bikes. It seemed as though they were seeking new riders and attempting to reach out to a new generation – without cutting ties to the established bikes that have owned the American cruiser market for so long. It was a challenging time, as many of the hard core Harley fans pushed back on the change (which was probably expected) – but the newer riders didn’t seem to respond as was hoped.

Then the game got a little more intense, as the overall sales of cruisers and heavy touring motorcycles remained flat or even fell through 2017 and into 2018. The situation was made worse by increased competition within the segment as Polaris / Indian and other manufacturers continued to focus and ramp up their efforts on these segments that had been almost exclusively Harley’s in the past. In the third quarter of 2017, the world’s largest manufacturer of heavyweight bikes saw a 40% drop in it’s profits – going from $114.1 million to $68.2 million during the same period year to year. Then Harley ran into trouble as their plans to expand overseas production of their motorcycles. Clearly it was a move that had been in the works for some time, but the announcements came at a time that President Trump seemed to be challenging the entire world in terms of trade. Discussion of tariffs and trade wars with both our competitors in Asia and our own allies in Europe suddenly seemed to hit home as new overseas production was announced by Harley. This rubbed many of Harley’s core conservative consumers wrong and drew ire from many long-time supporters. President Donald Trump even

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

tweeted that he was giving his support to a BOYCOTT of Harley-Davidson after they announced plans to start manufacturing motorcycles in Europe. Harley has now announced that not only will they be building new motorcycles in Europe and worldwide – these may be completely new models and yet a whole new portion of the promised 50 new models. Harley-Davidson Inc. has unveiled a plan to expand motorcycle ridership and increase global sales with bikes that will be hardly recognizable as traditional Harleys – among them electric scooters, streetfighter high performance bikes, dual sport / adventure bikes, and small bikes destined for foreign markets. The plan, perhaps the most aggressive in the company’s 115-year history, is part of a broad effort to reverse eroding market share, attract new riders to replace older ones aging out of the sport, and correct a stock slide that has seen Harley’s pershare value drop nearly in half over the last four years.

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

“The strategy will come at a steep price. Levatich said the company’s multiple-year expansion could require a total investment of up to $825 million through 2022. But he added that the company expects to increase annual revenues by $1 billion to $1.5 billion by then. The investment goal can be met by “self-funding,” he said, without raising new equity or debt.” – Charles Fleming, LA TIMES, www.LATIMES. com Harley has made efforts to expand past their stoic cruiser and touring models in the past – but they have usually been through partnering or acquiring other companies (Buell and Aermacchi). But not since the introduction of the V-Rod have they really made such a dramatic commitment to expanding their focus in terms of their own core line-up. I think that these announcements serve a clear purpose – in terms of clarifying their recent announcement of overseas production and their effort to become more competitive not only in terms of the new generations of riders, but also in terms of the global market. Harley isn’t necessarily going to be building Softails THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

and Road Glides in India or Europe. They are going to be building an entirely new generation of Harleys – that may have little in common with the chromed cruisers that own the American roads. For some this may be difficult to accept. These may be the same people that refuse to open social media accounts or take part in other “momentary fads” such as smart phones and Amazon. From my perspective, I think that it’s about time that Harley decided to go toe-toe with their global competitors. The big Japanese manufacturers have been challenging Harley for years with cruisers and touring bikes that bear more than a slight resemblance to the bikes that they are meant to compete with. And even BMW has introduced what they call a “bagger”. It seems long overdue that Harley has brought out a high-performance street bike that can go head to head with some of the Japanese sport bikes. (Yes, the Buell’s were outstanding sport bikes – but they were from Eric Buell not Harley Davidson development.) Anyways, here are the new bikes that have been announced by the factory – as presented by Harley-Davidson (HarleyDavidson.com) in their own words. Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

How to “Get There Dry” When I first started riding back in the 1960s, motorcycles were rapidly rising in popularity and there were lots of new riders. Those who didn’t catch “bike fever” all had friends who did. They thought we were kind of crazy so they were constantly asking us questions to sort of challenge our judgment. One of the most common was, “What do you do if it rains?” to which one of my friends always replied, “You get wet!”

to get off the road to avoid aquaplaning and poor visibility. When rain is combined with high humidity, there can be fog in the air that can also condense on your windshield and impair your vision. This is another good time to pull over. Radar apps help you see much further ahead and you can sort of predict the future by seeing what the direction and speed of storms are, but they are limited in what they can offer for route planning.

Not much has changed since then, and no rider I know looks forward to opportunities to ride in the rain. Most try to avoid it like the plague, and that’s not too difficult for those who only ride short distances- they simply take the car or stay home if it rains. Simple. For those who do full day rides, rallies and multi-day trips, it’s more complicated. If you need to be someplace hundreds of miles away in some kind of time frame, avoiding rain and staying dry can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, modern communication and technology have given us access to more and better information. This month, I’d like to share some tools and techniques I use to avoid rain that will enable you to avoid rain while going pretty much where and when you want. The first tool has been around forever, is available to every rider and is especially handy for judging what is just ahead. It’s the Windshield Wipers of oncoming vehicles. All wipers off- You’re good to go All wipers on- You’re going to get wet very soon Some wipers on- You might get by without getting too wet. You may laugh, but this can be very handy when you are riding in and out of light rain. For example, if you hate to put on rain gear in hot humid weather and want to avoid it as long as possible, observing windshield wipers will help you decide when it’s time to stop and put on the gear. Weather Radar If you have your smart phone mounted on your bike where you can see it, a radar app can come in handy for dodging thunderstorms. You can see what conditions are around you and where 46 46

A Better Way If you are doing day rides or multi-day trips, wouldn’t it be nice to have a web page or app that lets you put in a route, then shows you what the weather will be along the way?

you are going. If the app shows moving patterns, you can see what direction rain is moving. I’ve avoided many a thunderstorm by stopping for a lunch break at a strategic time. The latest Garmin zumo 590, 595 and 395 interface with a Garmin app on your phone to provide live radar superimposed on the GPS map. Sine the zumos are waterproof and work with gloves on you can see and manipulate them much better in rain than a smart phone. If you have access to a radar display, the colors on the map can be very helpful.

Get on your Web browser on your computer and go to http://get-there-dry. com/. It’s also available for iPhone at the iTunes Store. There is no App per se for Android, but you can access it through the Get there dry page on Facebook or access the regular web app through your Chrome browser. I suggest you start out on your computer browser with the web page so you can experiment on a bigger screen where you have a regular keyboard. Let’s do a walkthrough.

Blue to Light Green- If you have a tall windshield and are moving at 60+ MPH you might be able to stay fairly dry without putting on rain gear. If the humidity is low, the rain under these conditions may be evaporating as it falls and you might not feel it. We should always be so lucky!

Connect with local Ohio MSTA riders at these monthly breakfasts:

Dark Green to Bright Yellow- You’ll need rain gear, but it will probably do its job and you won’t be too uncomfortable.

Red, Brown, Purple- Most likely this will be a frog-strangler and it would be wise

First step is to PLAN YOUR ROUTE. Select the motorcycle button on the left to get routes that are optimized for us. Type in a city, street address etc. for A START POINT of the route and B DESTINATION. I used PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA for the start and CONCORD, NH, USA for the destination in this demo. The + icon can be used to insert intermediate points to fine tune your route. When you are done, click anywhere in the blue CALCULATE ROUTE bar.

The table at the bottom of the page is very powerful, as it shows conditions you will encounter along the route if you leave at the departure time shown at the top.

Once you click the GO button, the route map updates with 4 or 5 symbols along the route. Symbols are very rough indicators of weather along the way.

Here is another shot of the table for a different departure time. The background color of the Precipitation chance bar varies from white for 0% to dark blue for 100%. Background color for Temperature is yellow but lightens as temperatures drop. Background for Wind Speed is white for low speed but progressively pink for higher speed. The departure time slider allows you to adjust it from the present to any time in the next forty hours by simply clicking and dragging it. The table updates instantly, so you can easily move the slider around to get the Precipitation chance bar to look as light as possible.

In a few moments, you will see the black info blocks with distance, time and a couple of options shown, then a map of the route appears with a GO button at the bottom. If you want the route to go a different way, you can go back up and add additional points between the START and DESTINATION points and recalculate.

Here is a close look at the table. It shows the distance at the points shown on the route, expected time of arrival at the point based on the departure time set on the slider, chance of precipitation temperature, wind speed and direction. Wind direction is measured in degrees clockwise from due north, so a wind coming from the north has a wind direction of 0 degrees; wind from the east OHIO’S OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

POAG’S HOLE King of the Hill For 22 years now, the normally quiet town of Dansville, NY becomes the center of attention to those who think they can conquer the Hill at Poags Hole. The Motoclimb Super Series is comprised of riders from around the country with the goal of tackling some of the most insane terrain one could attempt on two wheels, and Poags Hole is the perfect stop on the tour. You could look at Poags Hole as two challenges in one. The bottom comprises five smaller hills or “steps” before the riders hit the nearly vertical face of the “wall”. As if that isn’t enough, the weather leading up to the event can, and does, drastically change the setup needed to have any hope of conquering this monster. Heavy rains leading up to the event made for a bit muddy but sticky start vs the very dry and dusty track last year. The hill quickly turns in to sand as the riders hit the wall. Heavy ruts and deep loose sand push the large paddled tires and the riders to the ultimate of tests in the attempt to scale the almost 700ft to the top. While that seems a daunting enough challenge in the open class, which can be just about any size motor running on alcohol, nitro methane, nitros bottles or combinations thereof, how about challenging the hill alongside another rider in the X-Climb! The crowd of easily hundreds, if not thousands, roared with approval as many side by side battles up the hill proved the excitement could be amped even higher. Congrats to Logan Mead on the Overall win on the day. Austin Cardwellon his Open class and King of the Hill wins and Tyler Cardwell for taking top honors in X-Climb! Many thanks to the organizers and staff for putting on a truly world class event!

Be the Majority

There have been so many times I’ve heard from unhappy members of Motorcycle Clubs complaining about how this “One Guy” who is in a leadership role is a Dictator, or a Bully, or just an A-Hole. It seems many clubs have them. Narcissist’s who literally think everyone else in the club exists to serve them. My question is how in the Hell did anyone vote them into a Leadership Role in the first place? It is generally because they have been outspoken at times before being elected or come across as Fearless. Sometimes they have great charisma. They generally seem to be all about it, and they are someone many might think should Lead them. Only to figure out after that they are about themselves. They were willing to tell you and everyone else exactly what you wanted to hear, to get elected. Why do they do this? Self-importance, self-validation, Power, etc. It is generally someone who would have little to nothing in a general society outside the club life, if they didn’t have people to hustle for personal gain. I’ve been asked by MC Club Members, “How do we deal with this kind of person? Now that they have the Power”. To that I say, they have no power without the body of the Club. The Club belongs to its members, not any one man. Even if you are an Original Member, once the second Guy puts on that patch, it is no longer an individuals Club, it now belongs to the members. I don’t know exactly how your club works, but if it works like most others I know, the Power is in the People, not in the individual. If you collectively don’t like something, its up to you to change it. Other 60

leadership will take notice if multiple members of an entire club, or even at the Chapter level come together and speak their mind and expose or discuss an issue about one leader. They have all been where you are on their way up the chain too, and no one wants to suffer some fool. I don’t know of any MC that isn’t a 100% voluntary club. Which means you do not have to suffer any one mans foolishness. You simply need to come together and address it. In most clubs there is such a thing as a vote of no confidence if someone is fleecing your club or abusing authority. You all broke it by electing a Bully or a Narcissist, only you all can fix it. I’ve been asked in my MC life to go up the chain for help and although sometimes it is a good idea to get validation from other leadership that you all are on the same page, it isn’t necessary. Because any good leader is going to tell you that You All have

the Power, Fix it. Get your Brothers together and Be the Majority that you are! Always Keep it Real.. and be sure to Keep others Real too! My Road Name is Tabasco, and I approve this message! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Clearing Up the Confusion About Ohio’s Knife Laws by Greg Ellifritz

Recently I received three different emails from readers and former students regarding Ohio’s often confusing knife laws. If I’m getting this many inquiries on the same topic, an explanatory article is in order. Keep in mind, I am not a lawyer. As such, this is not legal advice. After 22 years as a cop in Ohio, I do have some experience arresting people for carrying weapons. Don’t consider this legal advice, consider it my best recommendations for not ending up in handcuffs in the back seat of my police car. I am eminently qualified to provide that kind of information. Also, like any other information on this site, this is my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion or interests of my cop bosses or the city which employs me. The primary confusion about the knife law in Ohio is that there is minimal clear-cut statutory guidance about the difference between a common pocketknife carried for utilitarian purposes and a “deadly weapon” that is illegal under the law. Let’s start with the basics. In the Ohio Revised Code, section 2923.12 deals with the laws regarding the carrying of concealed weapons. The law states: 2923.12 Carrying concealed weapons. A) No person shall knowingly carry or have, concealed on the person’s person or concealed ready at hand, any of the following: 1) A deadly weapon other than a handgun; 2) A handgun other than a dangerous ordnance; 3) A dangerous ordnance. Since knives aren’t “handguns” or “a dangerous ordnance“, the legality of carrying a concealed blade falls on whether or not that knife is considered a “deadly weapon.” In the Weapons Control definitions section of the Ohio Revised Code a “deadly weapon” is defined as follows: ” “Deadly weapon” means any instrument, device, or thing capable of inflicting death, and designed or specially adapted for use as a weapon, or possessed, carried, or used as a weapon.” This is what is the biggest issue for most people. Under this definition, almost anything could be considered a “deadly weapon” under Ohio law. If I ram a sharpened #2 pencil into your eye socket, it may be “capable of inflicting death.” In using a pencil in this manner, I have most certainly “adapted it for use as a weapon.” Thus, under Ohio law, it may be illegal to carry a concealed pencil. With such broad definitions it makes it difficult for citizens to know what is legal and what is not.

62 62

Here is my best advice... First, the easiest option is to avoid concealing the knife. Look at the law again. In order for a deadly weapon to be illegal, it must be concealed. Open carry of deadly weapons is legal under Ohio law. Just like open carrying a pistol is legal, open carry of any type of knife is legal as well. The entire knife doesn’t have to be visible in order for it to be considered “unconcealed.” Various pieces of case law generated throughout the state have noted that if any part of the knife is visible, it is not concealed. For most people, carrying a folding knife clipped to a pocket while walking in public is essentially “open carry” and considered legal. It is only when the knife is “concealed” does the issue come down to whether or not the knife is a “deadly weapon.” If your knife is considered a “deadly weapon” it is illegal to carry concealed under Ohio law. Unfortunately, we don’t have clear cut guidelines differentiating a utility tool from a “deadly weapon.” The cop who is arresting you will make that judgement and ultimately, it will depend on the opinion of the judge or jury at your trial. In talking to thousands of cops about this issue in more than 15 years of teaching knife classes, here is a list of features that many cops might use to classify your knife as a “deadly weapon.”

Keep in mind that this list (like the law itself) is very subjective and depends on the individual cop on the scene. • The name. If your knife is called the “Throat Cutter 6000“, the cop might consider it a weapon. Contrast a name like that with the model name for the knife I carry (the Delica). “Delica” sounds much more innocuous than “Throat Cutter 6000.” • Blade length. The longer the blade, the more likely it will be considered a weapon. Although there are no blade length limits in the state law, I would advise keeping the blade length of any knife you carry under four inches or so. • Features such as a double edge or automatic opening. • How it is carried. If you have an elaborate shoulder rig for your knife or are carrying a fixed blade in a custom inside the waistband sheath, it’s going to look more like a weapon than a pocket knife used for utility purposes. Even more important than your knife’s features is how you intend to use it. If your knife is “possessed, carried, or used as a weapon,” it is a deadly weapon under Ohio law. If that weapon is concealed, you can be arrested. When the cop asks you why you are carrying the blade, you MUST have an innocuous reason. If you admit that you are carrying the knife as a defensive weapon, by default, your knife qualifies as a “deadly weapon” under Ohio law! Your knife can be used to open mail, cut string, or peel fruit. A fixed blade knife might be a hunting or skinning knife, a “wire stripper,” or an “emergency seatbelt cutter.” I don’t care what your reason for carrying the knife is, when the cop asks you, you should have an innocuous explanation, even if you are carrying the blade as a defensive tool.

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. www.buckeyefirearms.org

When the cop asks you “Do you have any weapons?” you should not disclose your knife. Remember, if you are carrying a knife as a weapon in Ohio, it meets the definition of a “deadly weapon.” A better answer to the question might be “I don’t have any weapons, but I have this pocketknife I use to open boxes I get in the mail.” Do not state that you are carrying your blade as a weapon, even if that is its intended use. In practice, 99% of street cops are not trying to arrest you for carrying a knife clipped to your pocket. If you don’t threaten the cop or anyone else with your blade, most cops won’t make an issue out of carrying a knife, even if you are carrying it as a weapon. In all my years of being a cop, I’ve never seen a normal, law abiding citizen arrested solely for carrying a knife at my department. Knife charges almost always are “leverage charges” added on after an arrest for some other criminal act. Here’s an example. Let’s say you get drunk and punch someone in a bar fight. The cop arrives and arrests you for assault. The cop

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

knows that a misdemeanor assault charge is likely to be plead down to something more minor like “disorderly conduct.” He doesn’t want that to happen. While searching you, incident to the arrest, he finds a concealed knife. He then tacks on a “carrying concealed weapons” charge on to the assault. Now the prosecutor has leverage. The prosecutor can offer a deal like “plead guilty to the assault and we’ll drop the weapons charge.” All the cop wanted was the original assault charge anyway. He doesn’t care that you have a knife. He just adds it to the list so the prosecutor has some leverage to ensure the assault charge sticks when it’s deal making time. That’s how I see knife laws being enforced most often in Ohio. If you don’t do something stupid to get yourself arrested in the first place, the concealed knife seldom becomes an

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

issue. This is especially true concerning folks with a concealed handgun license. Most cops understand the irony of arresting you for having a concealed Swiss Army knife when you are legally allowed to have as many loaded pistols as you desire hidden on your person. It just doesn’t make much sense to arrest someone for having a pocket knife when they are legally allowed to carry a concealed handgun that is a far more dangerous weapon. Please note, however, that this advice applies to the state law. Individual cities may have more restrictive local ordinances that limit blade length or other knife characteristics. It’s always smart to check on your local laws in addition to the state laws I mention here. Ohio knife law is very subjective. It is confusing and difficult both to obey and to enforce. The bottom line is that if you carry a reasonably sized knife, have an innocuous reason as to why you are carrying it, and avoid committing any other crimes that can get you arrested, you are unlikely to have any issues carrying a defensive knife in the state of Ohio. RECIPES

Love this classic ‘Biker” recipe! It tastes so good and is so easy to do~

Drunk Butt Chicken 1 tbsp dried bay leaf, crushed 1 tbsp garlic, minced 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed tight 2 tsps fine sea salt 2 tbsps black pepper 4 tbsps paprika 2 tsps cayenne pepper 4 tbsps ketchup 3 tsps Frank’s red hot sauce 4 tbsps beer (or soda) 4 tbsps white vinegar 1 (12 ounce) can beer (or soda) 1 (3 1/2-4 lb) whole chickens

Bacon Wrapped Grilled Corn - Great Oven Roasted Too 6 pc Corn on the cob, shucked and cleaned 1 package hickory smoked bacon 2tsp salt 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp paprika 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp onion powder 2 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp cayenne pepper 6 tbsp butter 6 sheets foil

Wash chicken well inside an out and pat dry with paper towels. Mix the rub: paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar in a small bowl and set it aside. In another bowl, mix glaze: brown sugar, ketchup, frank’s red hot sauce, white vinegar, 4 tbsp beer (save remainder in can and set it aside) Pour beer can out (or drink it) until it is just a bit over half way full and then add crushed bay leaves and 1 tsp of rub to the half full can

Mix all seasonings into a small bowl Rub the cleaned corn with 1 tbsp butter per ear and rub on seasoning mix

Loosen the skin on the breasts, legs and thighs of your chicken. Massage the rub into the meat under the skin and then all over the outside of the bird’s skin as well as inside the cavity.

Wrap each piece with 2-3 pieces of bacon each Wrap in foil tightly and twist ends to tighten

Place beer can in the “butt” of the bird making the bird stand upright.

To grill: cook for 30-40 minutes turning every 5

Preheat grill with all burners on high until grill is heated and ready to cook.

To Oven Roast:Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy

Cook over indirect heat, kind of off to the side so it wont burn Place the standing bird the grill, close lid After 30 minutes glaze the chicken and rotate it. Cook another hour rotating and glazing the chicken every 30 minutes Transfer chicken carefully off of beer can and onto cutting board. Let rest 5-10 minutes and then carve and enjoy!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

“Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old. “You always feel like you have to pee. And most of the time, you stand at the toilet and nothing comes out!” “Ah, that’s nothin’,” said the 70-year-old. “When you’re seventy, you can’t even crap anymore. You take laxatives, then you sit on the toilet all day and nothin’ comes out!” “Actually,” said the 80-year-old, “80 is the worst age of all!” “Do you have trouble peeing too?” asked the 60-year-old. “No, not really. I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse

A teacher gave her class of 11 year olds an assignment: To get their parent to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day the kids came back and one by one began to tell their stories.

then she killed the last ten with her bare hands.”

Ashley said, “My father’s a farmer and we have a lot of egg-laying hens. One time we were taking our eggs to market in a basket on the front seat of the car when we hit a big bump in the road and all the eggs got broken.

“Stay the heck away from Aunty Sharon when she’s been drinking.”

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!”

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

“Very good,” said the teacher.

My wife asked, ‘Do you know her?’

Next little Sarah raised her hand and said, “Our family are farmers too. But we raise chickens for the meat market. One day we had a dozen eggs, but when they hatched we only got ten live chicks, and the moral to this story is, ‘Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched’.”

‘Yes,’ I sighed, ‘She’s my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.’

“What’s the morale of that story?” asked the teacher.

Michael, do you have a story to share?”

“Do you have trouble crapping?” asked the 70-year-old.

“Yes. My daddy told me this story about my Aunty Sharon. Aunty Sharon was a flight engineer on a plane in the Gulf War and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory and all she had was a bottle of whisky, a machine gun and a machete. She drank the whiskey on the way down so it wouldn’t break and then she landed right in the middle of 100 enemy troops. She killed seventy of them with the machine gun until she ran out of bullets. Then she killed twenty more with the machete until the blade broke. And

“No, I crap every morning at 6:30.” With great exasperation, the 60-year-old said, “Let me get this straight. You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. “I don’t wake up un til 7:00!”

‘My God!’ says my wife, ‘Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?’

“That was a fine story Sarah.”

on a flat rock; no problem at all.”

So what’s so tough about being 80?”

“Good heavens,” said the horrified teacher, “what kind of moral did your daddy tell you from that horrible story?”
