FROM THE PUBLISHER “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke, Irish Statesman Regardless of your sense of politics or particular party affiliation, it seems clear that a clear consensus of the country feels as though something is really wrong with our nation. I take no pride in saying this, as I consider myself a patriot and proud American. I’ve stood and bled for my community and the defense of others – and I’d do it again without hesitation. However, it seems clear that at the very least there is a general malaise that has taken hold of our nation. I believe strongly that the cause of this problem is apathy. That’s a general lack of interest, enthusiasm, or even concern amongst a group – in this case, the majority of our country. There are exceptions and sparks of life, but I believe that the vast majority of our country seems to be in a listless, unresponsive sleep. Undoubtedly there are those – on both sides of the political spectrum – that are playing off the lack of response from the general public and inciting those on the extreme fringes of our society. The crazies are getting riled up and appear to be taking over our country – while we sit back and simply watch. Regardless of who you’re backing for our next President, you can’t help but be amazed that these are the two best choices to be presented for our consideration. Out of our entire country, these are the two candidates that we are presented with? I see almost as many “Hillary for Prison” signs as I see campaign signs for her and Trump all too often sounds like a Morning Shock Jock DJ pandering to his audience and saying whatever comes to mind to get a reaction. I really am left wondering if there is really isn’t a backroom someplace where “power brokers” contemplate just how much they can pull on the American people. Like a giant Jenga game – except it’s our country that comes tumbling down after one too many blocks have been pulled out of our base. Just how much can they get away with before the majority of the country wakes up and says enough is enough! Or before we simply lose control. I’m not just talking national politics here. The same could be said for our rights as riders and the organizations charged with protecting those rights. Almost without exception, motorcycle rights organizations are struggling for membership at a time when our freedoms are being challenged on almost every front. How is that possible? Because we’ve grown apathetic and are failing to respond to the call for help. As this riding season winds down and the political winds take hold of our lives and make every effort to blow us one way or another – I’d challenge everyone to stand their ground. Don’t allow your voice or rights to be taken away – and most importantly support those that are fighting for your position to be heard. If you ride a motorcycle – make sure that you belong to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and get involved in your local ABATE Chapter. These organizations protect your rights and allow your voice to be heard louder than you might sound on your own. That’s the key. Make sure that your voice is heard. Don’t be content while others are suffering regardless of the distractions. And for the sake of our country – VOTE and let them know what matters to YOU!

Harley-Davidson Unveils 27 Custom Motorcycles Inspired By Iconic Marvel Characters To celebrate the the 75th anniversary of Captain America, Marvel Comics and HarleyDavidson have teamed up to develop a series of custom motorcycles and inspired by the heroes and Marvel universe villains. Kicking things off, Harley-Davidson has introduced a special 75th anniversary Captain America Street Glide Special (Touring) bike. Harley-Davidson spokesperson, David Turney says, “The spirit of freedom is alive and thriving in the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special. Like Captain America, it leads from the front with strength, power and endurance, enabling you to venture to new worlds and beyond.” We customized the Captain America Street Glide Special to inspire Harley-Davidson dealers across Australia and New Zealand

to create their own Marvel character inspired custom motorcycle using the wider H-D range. The results have been phenomenal. A true combination of super powers, with over 16 Marvel characters represented,” Turney says. With this Captain America bike as inspiration, participating dealers were then challenged to create their own Marvel character inspired custom motorcycles using the entire H-D lineup. “The results have been phenomenal. A true combination of super powers, with over 16 Marvel characters represented,” Turney says. The line features a formidable lineup of heroes, including Groot, Black Widow, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, SpiderGwen, Wasp, Ultron, Drax, Ant-Man, The Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Thanos. You can visit h-dmarvelcustoms. com to see each of the unique bikes. While there, you can enter a contest and vote for favorite models, which will yield the lucky one of the motorcycle as a prize. The only problem is that competitors must live in Australia or New Zealand. Yes, this is a Harley-Davidson Australia promotion. In fact, all 27 custom bikes will be first put on display at the Oz Comic-Con in Sydney, which takes place on September 10th and 11th. Yes, that would be Sydney, Australia. And the Grand Prize of the promotion is a prize package that includes a trip to the United States of America!

REPORT Discovery Channel to air three-part mini-series ’Harley and the Davidsons’ on Sept. 5-7 Discovery Channel is sending us back in time to the beginning of what evolved into one of America’s most well-known motorcycle brands: the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. A mini-series, “Harley and the Davidsons,” includes three two-hour installments. Part 1 will air at 9 p.m. ET on Sept. 5. Parts two and three air on Sept. 6, and Sept. 7. The story provides insight into the successes and struggles of company founders, Walter and Arthur Davidson and Bill Harley. The cast includes Michiel Huisman (“Game of Thrones”) as AMA Hall of Famer Walter Davidson, Robert Aramayo (“Game of Thrones”) as AMA Hall of Famer William (Bill) Harley, and Bug Hall (“The Little Rascals”) playing the role of AMA Hall of Famer Arthur Davidson. Hall took a few minutes to speak with the AMA about his passion for motorcycling and his role in the series. American Motorcyclist: I was told you ride. What do you ride? Bug Hall: I was a BMW guy my whole life. I had R1200Cs and R1200Rs and owned a few other bikes over the years. Had a [Suzuki] GSXR as a teenager, had a couple Hondas. In total, I probably have wrecked about 12 bikes over the years.
AM: What drew you to this role? Does this role hold any significance to you because you’re a rider? BH: First and foremost, I heard that they were doing this story. That’s what got me out of what I call my “mini-retirement.” I had been focusing on writing, and, every now and then, my guys would call and try to entice me out of retirement. When they called about this, I went: “Yeah I absolutely have to take a look at this.” What really appealed to me was Arthur. He was like me. I’m a Texas boy who loves to fish, the peaceful quiet of nature and being by myself. Arthur really was that quiet guy. When he was in sales mode, he was a very different guy. He was fair, honest and just, but could sell you anything. It’s like a superpower he’s using for good. I’ve never been that guy. I’m awkward in conversations. I’d like to think he was, too, but learned to talk to people and sell things. That was really inspiring to me the more I studied him. Bug Hall plays Arthur Davidson in the series. AM: How much did you know much about Arthur or the company before you took the role? BH: When we were studying these guys, one of the details I first noticed is that these guys [Arthur, Walter and Bill], in every

AM: How long have you been riding? BH: I started in my early teens. My dad put me on Honda Shadow when I was 13 or 14. I couldn’t figure out the friction zone on the clutch. It was stall, stall, stall. Then one night, I had a dream that I was fluidly riding, then next day got on it, and it was like it just clicked. I didn’t own or drive a car until about four or five years ago. Everywhere I went, I went on a bike–back and forth across America. I’ve roughly estimated that I’ve hit the million-mile mark. AM: Where is your favorite place to ride? BH: Oh man, come on. That’s an impossible question! The Pacific coast is beautiful. The reality, though, is the 10 [Interstate 10]. Jump on it in California and take it to Florida. You’ll see every type of scenery. At least half of my million miles were gathered on the 10.

photo we saw of them, buttoned their bottom button of their suits. We looked up pictures of other guys in Milwaukee at the time, and it wasn’t common. In some way, they were rebelling against the business world. These were country boys. There was a rebellion in all of them, and I think that’s what made their machines so great. They made it their way. Bill Harley was a genius of an engineer. He didn’t make things that were already out there. He redefined them. These guys were on a different level, but yet they were country boys. I didn’t know very much of any of that until I took the project on.
are sections that had to be condensed. For the most part, it is so spot on. We were working with people that cared so much. AM: Are the Harley and Davidson families involved in the series at all? Did they help contribute history or even provide bikes or props? BH: No, the family is not involved. But, as actors, we were lucky enough to get to meet Willie G. Davidson [AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend] during our trip to the factory.
AM: Where was the series shot? BH: In Romania. The reality is we wanted to be as authentic as possible, and Milwaukee [where Harley-Davidson is based] has built up since that time. It doesn’t look like it did at the turn of the [20th] century. It was really a matter of authenticity. America has moved on into the future, but we did go up to Milwaukee and spend time with guys at HarleyDavidson and tour the factory. It was a lot of fun going to the museum and hearing from the curator. AM: How closely does the series stick to the true storyline and how much is embellished? BH: In 25 years, I’ve never worked with a group of people that were so careful with regard to authenticity. Every nut and bolt was checked and triple checked. The men themselves and the story. Of course, there

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, We are in trouble with fatalities. At this rate we will surpass last year and we will be the center of attention to all who think they can fix it. We as Bikers can and need to fix it ourselves. In 2015 we had 2111 crashes and 84 fatalities and now in 2016 we have (as of 8/1/2016) 1948 crashes and 93 fatalities. At this time we can study 80 of these: 16 were trained and 11 of these were at fault, 10 were passengers and 1 was a 3-wheeler. Then we need to look at helmet use because the people that think they know what will fix things think helmets will, but 45% were wearing helmets. The last figure that we need to look at is in 54% of fatalities, the motorcyclist was in error. Now we have the facts but what will fix it? One thing that would help is if everyone would take a Motorcycle Training Course. In Ohio we have Motorcycle Ohio. For $50.00 you can take their training course. Some say that the beginner’s course is a waste of time because they already know how to ride. Yes you do, but there are things over the years that we don’t practice anymore and the training brings them back to being a habit. There are also advanced courses and even a one day course. For those that have been riding on a temporary permit for years, you will have your endorsement at the end of the course. Being trained can and will fix a big percent of our crashes. Fix crashes and fatalities will come down. Just so you know, I personally have taken the beginner’s course 3 times, and each time have learned something new.
Most of us have two more months of riding. At the end of October we stop riding and go into winter mode. Some of us keep going until they put salt down on the road. I don’t ride until the rain washes it off. Start thinking about getting your bike ready for this time of the year. It’s probably time for a fresh oil change. If you have an oil cooler, find your covers and put them on for the cold weather. If you have an open air cleaner, find the socks that cover it. And check those tires because you need good traction this time of year. I just had to put on a new front tire and I can tell you from experience, tire installation is much cheaper at home than on the road. Don’t forget to get out your cold weather gear that you haven’t had to wear lately. Make sure it is ready to go. Most of the time it takes about two weeks to get a zipper put in. It is great to ride for as long as we can and with the right gear and a well maintained bike, it can be Fun. I have been getting around Ohio visiting different party and runs. It seems that many of the events are getting smaller and many of these small riding groups rely on these events to support them for the year. One of these small clubs in the Toledo area was my first organized ride. I still go back and do their events. Not as many as I would like but it helps. At the same time I went on my first organized ride, I had to join AMA because back then all rides were sanctioned and insured by AMA. Today we all go on runs and some are not insured. This is not good. If you are involved with the organization of a run, or know who is, please make sure they get insurance. Some of the
fatalities I talked about earlier happen on these runs, and insurance protects the organizers. ABATE of Ohio Inc. is an organization, not a club. We do not require you to come to meetings, but we do require that you stay informed about motorcycling, as we are “Dedicated to the Preservation of Motorcycling”. It’s the same idea as in guns where you have the NRA, an origination to inform gun owners of their rights. ABATE works through legislation to keep motorcycling FREE and inform you on any laws that may hinder your way of riding. In our Magazine you can find articles on what is going on with our lawmakers, information on motorcycle safety and education, information on insurance issues and fliers for events going on around the state. To become a member you can go online, ABATE.com, or call 1-800-25BIKER. We do take credit cards. I want everyone to stay responsible and ride with care; remember that DISTRACTED DRIVERS ARE EVERYWHERE!! Always look ahead and know where you can go to avoid a hazard and ride SMART. LOOK OUT FOR CARS!!! You have all seen the bumper stickers LOOK OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES. However in light of the recent fatal motorcycle crashes I have come to realize riders must look out for themselves. Recently a friend of mine posted on Facebook how he narrowly avoided becoming another statistic while riding his motorcycle on the way home from work. Comments to his post were very interesting. There were the usual comments about loud pipes, but one in particular stood out. “Motorcycle riders are not any more entitled than any other vehicle on the road.” While that statement may be true the roadways have become more dangerous for riders and drivers alike. Distracted drivers are becoming the norm. On a trip to Daytona last October to pass time on the fourteen plus hour ride we played an adult version of I Spy. We counted how many people were on their cellphones. Although not a scientific study, we were amazed that seven in ten were talking or texting while driving. When my son was actively racing I was often asked “How can you watch him when he is out there on the track racing?”
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
As a mom it was difficult at times but my response was always the same. “He is much safer on the track than the street. It is a controlled environment with safety gear and emergency personnel.” Statistics are all over the place but one source I read said that in 2010 motorcycle accident fatalities accounted for 14% of all accident fatalities. With increased ridership comes an increased risk of a rider becoming a statistic. My husband and I try to ride frequently, but our best chances out there are if we become acutely aware of our surroundings and the drivers around us. Some are distracted and some genuinely do not see or hear us. In driver’s ed we were told to “drive defensively.” That mantra holds true even more so for motorcycle riders. CMA
The Haircut
As scheduled on Sunday, July 24, 2016, I arrived at Crossroads Church without a hair cut for the past 8 weeks. Today was the day I was to fulfill my commitment to CATS Class and allow them to cut my hair and shave my head because they met the Run For the Son Challenge I gave them. The CATS have been looking forward to this day for several weeks now as my wife has been dreading it. Here I am after arriving at Church that morning.
I was lucky, the CATS decided after they “buzzed” my head with clippers not to shave my head. I thank the Lord for the members of the CATS Class who had the vision to meet the challenge for Run For the Son and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many parts of the world which we could not have done by ourselves. Mark 16: 15,16, “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” NASB GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator
I purposefully wore a Tee shirt that said, “Finish Well”. It’s been my goal since accepting Christ as my savior to serve Him well until the very end of life for me on what Phil Robertson calls “Planet Earth”. Christ gave His very best for each of us so we can join Him in Heaven for eternity. Why should I give Him any less? The money raised by CATS will be used by 4 different ministries: Open Doors, who takes Bibles to the less fortunate where sometimes one Bible will be taken apart and shared by as many as 50 people and they work with the underground Church; Missionary Ventures, who provides transportation for foreign Pastors so they can reach their people easier and that might be a pedal bike, motorcycle, boat, horse, or even a camel; The Jesus Film Project by Campus Crusade For Christ, who translates the “Jesus Film” into different language dialects and then puts together an entire team with all necessary equipment to show the film; and CMA which uses the funds to reach motorcyclist within the USA. According to my daughter, Angela, here I am after the haircut along with my “new best friend Wooly Guy”.

TREE HOUSE STUNT SHOW
Stunt Riders take to the streets of Zanesville!
What does High revving, Hot Columbian coffee beans, 1 DJ, 2 turn tables, Bunch of yellow tape and a 50 Dollar street permit get you? A whole lot of Hell Yeahs!!!!!! Lindsay Anderson owner/operator, Head chef and art director of The “Treehouse Coffee / Sandwich Shop” in Downtown Zanesville had a problem and was kind of far away from the “Y-Bridge” Festival the weekend of Aug 5th. She wanted to show the community what her business promoted but everything fun was happening down the street. She had a plan she set it in motion and as you all know anyone who involves motorcycles it’s the gift that keeps on giving… On August 5th I headed out to Zanesville late in the day with a good friend wondering how this was all going to go down. All I knew was there was a Motorcycles, Approved Street permit, DJ, a coffee Shop and the road out in front of it was blockaded off for a stunt show. I can recall this day vividly cause the air was so thick, saturated and muggy the birds were even taking refuge on the side of the highway in lawn 20 (Continued p.22) THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

(From p.20) chairs. We took the exit for Zanesville and we could already hear motorcycles hitting the rev limiters and smoke creeping from around the corner of the old brick buildings on Market St. I was like a bull in a china store trying to park so I did not miss anything. It felt like eternity looking for a place to park. As I walked up to the Venue In front of the TreeHouse I saw a mob of kids shorter than the yellow tape barrier with their jaws on the ground oozing with slobber like they were about to open X-mas gifts. Every last one of those kids just standing in complete awe, hands raised like the Jonas brothers were throwing a free concert and they were front row! One kid was yelling so loud I could of swore I watched him cough up lung, pick it back up, re insert it like it was nothing and continued yelling every time he saw a front wheel come up off the ground. DJ Josh Kennison “DJ Style” was in the house to keep the party going nonstop. The atmosphere was intense. No one cared it was muggy, hot or the sun was shooting death rays onto everyone. Everyone was enjoying all the motorcycles, stunts, music and good company. What everyone failed to realize is Lindsay Anderson’s plan was in full effect. Her business and life is about getting people together and showing them unity. Her coffee shop employees only people from the local community, offers local goods and a place to show off local art and artists. She made one phone call to a guy named Steve Zorg “Local Ohio Stunter” and he made a phone call to a few friends that ride and so on. Before you know it 20 plus stunters came out to display some pretty rad stunts all day long just cause they love to ride. That in turn caught everyone’s attention from down the block and brought both sides of town together, well who are we kidding the motorcycles attracted a very large group of people from the other side of town to the point where people were on shoulders. Ill let the pictures speak for themselves as you can see it was a hell of a time! Later in the day we Even got a hog on one wheel and a large touring bike. No one style or brand of two wheels was safe from the antics that day. Even Lindsay the Tree House owner was on a little 50 stunt bike trying to do wheelies before the sun set behind the buildings. If you are ever in the area of Zanesville, stop by The Tree House at 255 Market grab a table and relax knowing you’re in a place where anyone and everyone is welcome. POW-MIA’S “WE WILL NEVER FORGET Saturday July 23, 2016 was a special day for the veterans at the Louis Stokes V A Hospital in Cleveland. Ohio. Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 Ohio hosted its annual V A Hospital picnic for all of the patients housed currently in the hospital as well as its Domiciliary facility adjacent to the hospital. The actual event occupied the first floor area of the main parking garage which provided protection from any type of adverse weather conditions. Although a hot and humid day, the garage provides its own unique cooling and ventilation effect due to its construction. Two 48’’ fans from the Maintenance Department at the hospital also kept a steady breeze flowing for the patient’s personal comfort while eating and enjoying the entertainment provided during the day. Rolling Thunder chapter members provided the organizational and cooking staff. Serving duties on the lunch line were provided by numerous support volunteers who handed out ample portions of hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and baked beans. Plenty of ice cold soft drinks and bottled water were dispensed by Rolling Thunder staff as well as handing out the popular

desert table offerings. Other volunteers assisted in distributing “goodie bags” filled with popular toiletries, socks as well as assorted books. The hospital staff team of nurses and aides assisted in the process of escorting patients from the hospital floors to the garage; helped patients work through the serving line and over to a table area to enjoy their lunch. The Rolling Thunder popcorn machine was popular as well as the ice cream truck that made a surprise visit. All patients received an ice cream ticket for a selection of their choice. No picnic is complete without entertainment. The Red Hackle Pipe and Drum Corp provided many rousing selections of bag pipe tunes. And a rhythm and blues band kept everyone’s attention. There is nothing quite like lively music and hot harmonica player in a parking garage to enhance the acoustic experience! Many veterans made a special effort to stop by the Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 Chair of Honor that was set up in the dining area. Also present was a special motorcycle display by Massillon, Ohio native and Viet Nam

Vet, Ken McGill. Ken, a 1966 graduate of Perry High School in Massillon went into the service after graduation along with numerous other classmates of that era. Eleven of these friends, including his best friend, unfortunately, did not return having made the ultimate sacrifice. Ken took it upon himself, over several years, to build a tribute bike from a 1968 Harley Davidson basket case he discovered in their honor. Beautifully hand crafted, the bike also boasts electrified paint on the tank and rear fender that illuminates from a remote pocket fob he carries. A combat soldier on the tank and the names of the 11 lost veteran classmates glow on command……a very moving tribute. Ken was constantly interacting with the patients telling his story and listening to theirs. It was a memorable day for all attendees. PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works
E
ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checksin’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!
28
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
State and Stop Prizes
E
very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The Winners
I
f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s all season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2015, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes! 2016 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!
T
he 2016 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It’s really that simple!
hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website!
Y
ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booths for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.
The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.
The RIDE kicks off in MAY!
Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com 32

Piqua BikeFest Presented by Piqua Harley-Davidson and Thunder Roads Ohio September 16th and 17th Piqua, Ohio Piqua BikeFest returns to the streets of this historic southwestern Ohio city with live music and even more for you to do at Piqua Harley-Davidson. The inspiration for Piqua BikeFest came from an old photo – a vintage panoramic that showed a line of riders and their iron beasts in front of the local HarleyDavidson dealership. With the 100th Anniversary of that photo coming up, a group of local volunteers came together and formed a committee charged with hosting a rally in downtown Piqua. They brought Thunder Roads Ohio onboard and the rest you might say is history. Despite the many challenges of hosting a motorcycle rally in the midst of a historic, dare we say conservative, city – the event was launched as one of the largest first year motorcycle rallies in the state or even regionally. Piqua BikeFest enjoyed another successful year in 2015. Thousands came from across the region and enjoyed the fun, family friendly rally in the streets of Piqua.
Some of the biggest changes to the event will be found out at the Harley-Davidson dealership located just off I75. Under new ownership, Piqua Harley-Davidson (formerly Gover H-D) has fully embraced the event and made a clear commitment beyond simply its own campus. As part of this commitment, they have sponsored the main stage downtown – as well as the programming at the dealership. Piqua H-D has made arrangements with the factory to host a H-D Demo Truck throughout the weekend at the dealership – as well as the H-D Rebel Truck downtown. Sinister Stunts, a huge hit with everyone last year, will once again entertain the crowds at the dealership and the classic pin-up contest will also return this year, though now later on Friday evening. www.facebook.com/IronandInkpages. Since its launch two years ago, one of the absolute highlights of the rally has been the Bike Show. Presented by Thunder Roads Ohio, the show has drawn bikes from throughout the Midwest in just
its first two years. Trophies and Wall Plaques will be awarded to First through Third in each class, and finalists will have the chance to compete for sponsored spots at the upcoming International Master Bike Builder Association show in March. There will also be a BEST of SHOW trophy given, based upon popular vote from those attending the rally. For more information on the Bike Show or to register your bike in advance, you can visit ThunderRoadsOhio.US For a complete schedule of entertainment and more details on the event, visit www. PiquaBikeFest.com. You can also stay up to date with any changes and news regarding the rally by becoming a fan at www.facebook.com/PiquaBikeFest. You can also find hundreds of photos from last year’s event there in the albums. If you missed last year, check them out – you’ll see you missed out on quite the party! We look forward to seeing everyone there this year!
For 2016, past headliners Jasmine Cain and Tony Rio again return to Piqua along with popular local bands such as Ithica, Hidden Assets, and Hollow – an Alice in Chains tribute band. Saturday night, PBF welcomes a pair of celebrity rock shows kicking off with Kneivel’s Daredevil Band – featuring Krysten Knievel on lead vocals – followed up by Count’s 77 – featuring Danny “Count” Koker from the History Channel show “counting Cars”.

Our thanks go out to all the sponsors, including Piqua HarleyDavidson, The Comfort Inn Piqua, Mulligan’s Pub, Z’s, The Miami Valley Centre Mall, and of course Thunder Roads Ohio and the many other local sponsors that have stepped up to support this even. Thunder Roads Ohio has once again teamed up with Jake and Stacey Hummel, owners of Sportstez, to present the Thunder Zone at Sportsterz Bar and Grill. GUNS features Phil Lewis on vocals, Kenny Kweens on bass guitar, Michael Grant on lead guitar, and Steve Riley on drums – they are the legends of the Sunset Strip Rock Scene! They take the Sportsterz Thunder Zone Stage on Saturday night. Once again, Sportsterz will be offering VIP Tickets which allow you to enjoy the show up close and personal right in front of the stage. This show has consistently been one of the most popular ones of the year for TRO, and has featured numerous nationally recognized bikes amongst its winners. Registration starts at noon and the winners will be announced around 5pm. It’s a ride-in bike show, so no trailer queens – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring your bike in looking its best. To help ensure this, regardless of what the roads are like nationally recognized fitness feature model Amy Bella will be hosting a Bikini Bike Wash at Sportsterz this year. Sponsored by American Heritage Motorcycles, Amy will also be autographing posters and posing with bikes for those interested.
Other feature entertainment includes special guests Black Bear Prodigy from Erie PA (Thursday Night), Dave’s Planet
On Friday, Sept 9th, the “Founder’s Parade” is led by Thunder on the Strip founders Dwayne Bennet and Jake Hummel from Sportsterz. Everyone is invited to meet up at Sportsterz for a ride out to DW3’s at 4:30pm where there is a social and chance to meet the folks that put it all together. Then the “Official Parade” takes off for Geneva-On-TheLake! It’s a fun time and is free of charge. On Saturday Night, The Iron Cowboy himself hosts the World Famous SPORTSTERZ BURN OUT CONTEST! Roll em’ into the concrete pit and burn rubber! Top burnouts earn FREE TIRES, courtesy Sportsterz and Goblin Cycles. Cash prizes for style and crowd response as well – so don’t be shy! 54

HOLLISTER RALLY 20
July 1 – 3 (Hollister) It was without a doubt that Hollister was the place to be for motorcycle enthusiasts during this patriotic holiday. Riders came from far and wide to be a part of this historic biker celebration. The sheer number of bikes and bikers was quite impressive and it was for good reason too. Riders from California are hungry for an event of this magnitude – a BIG rally…like other states have across the country. There is a lot of reasons why it is difficult to do so in California, but with the collaboration from the City of Hollister and their wise decision to bring in an event promoter with a respectable resume and organizational expertise that Roadshows, Inc brought to the table - the stage was set for an outstanding 3 days in the heart of California’s central valley! Hats off to the Roadshows crew for pulling this all together and giving us a great rally in California! Not to mention, it doesn’t hurt to have the support of the host community along with its local businesses like Corbin Seats to openly welcome

016: Where It All Began the throng of bikers making the trek to visit their region. During the rally, the Corbin Seats facility is surrounded by vendor booths outside and this year, Jason Pullen Stunts was wowing the crowd with his insane riding skills. Inside there was live music and the facility is open to the public for self guided tours to witness firsthand the workmanship behind the famous Corbin Seat. What an operation! Not too far down the street is Hollister Powersports where the Victory and Indian motorcycle demo fleet was on site again this year for riders to come by to swing a leg over to find out firsthand what the buzz is about with these great American-made bikes. There was also a booth downtown at the Vets Hall to see TRM NorCal’s July RIDE PRIDE - Indian Chieftain Darkhorse “The Redeemer”. The Vets Hall was kind of the center or focal point of the Rally this year. At the Vets Hall on Friday, Mondo Porras of Denver Choppers hosted an outstanding Vintage Bike Show. This show brought in some of the coolest choppers and bobbers that you could see anywhere and was a huge success. On Saturday afternoon the Vets Hall was once again the center of the rally attention with baggers and extreme customs as the Corbin Bike Show was relocated downtown headed up by Mondo, Les Covington and the sanctioned judges from IMBBA (International Master Bike Builders Association). Just around the corner from the Vets Hall, Harley-Davidson Motor Company brought in various models from their demo fleet. And for those experiencing mechanical issues over the weekend, Benito and his crew from Thunder Road Motorcycle Shop were open to help out-of-towners with their rides. Over on Seventh Street, Big Bear Choppers were on hand supporting the guys from Straight Up SJ as the stunt teams title sponsor. And although the area for the team to perform their stunts was quite small, the guys pulled it off with great skill and the crowd was very impressed with their ability to wheelie and make sliding 180 degree turns in that confined space and their performances were off the hook! The Globe of Death was also on Seventh Street and you could watch motorcycles defying gravity as they spun their bikes around inside a small metal globe. I always wanted to try out the BMW K1600GT and to my surprise they had one for me to rent. I spent a week on this bike and it did not disappoint. They also had GSA’s, RT’s, and others by BMW. Also had a wide selection of Harleys and Indian. Bottom line, if you want a convenient location (short hop from the airport), clean bikes, and top-shelf concierge service, look no further. They are cool, quick, efficient, and go out of their way to make sure you maximize ride time. Thanks Paul and Mike for setting us up. Craig from California takes his rented BMW down the Dragon’s Tail
I uploaded a photo from the Tail of the Dragon. That bike inspired a lot of confidence :) - Craig K, Carlsbad CA (10/4/2016)

You Get What You Give The article title is fairly self-evident, isn’t it? You would think so. But how often is your club disrespected, for no other reason that an opposing thought process feels it their duty to make certain that you know their opinion? (I’m Guilty) But then again, how receptive is your club of others opinions? I see on social media all the time, “Support So and So”, or if you support “So and So, but not So and So, you’re wrong”. Mostly I see this type of mindset from “Supporters”, or citizens who aren’t in, or have never been in an MC. This is what I refer to as “Drinking the Kool-aide”. They have no actual investment in hating anyone, but to fit in they will hate whoever their friend hates. Pretty small minded Sheeple if you ask me. I don’t specifically dislike any club on merit, except one. I don’t even mind Law Enforcement Clubs, so long as they follow Law Enforcement rules and laws. When they break the law, they are simply hypocrites not worthy of anyone’s respect. At least a Real LE Club who put together a Riding Club to raise money for their “Brothers”, or Charities doesn’t pretend to be something they are not. There are few of them that actually fit that mold, but I don’t mind them. I don’t associate with them, but I really don’t mind them. I get it, if they are a person regardless of their job, and they like to ride together and form their own “Club”, like I said, I get it.
down 20 years ago. I am no longer in that situation. Where I am in my club life I hate no one specifically. I don’t specifically like anyone either. I only care about being true to our own. I enjoy the company of other local and national clubs. I know many of the other Diamond Clubs and have them about over to party from time to time, and I go party with them as well. I am treated with respect because I treat them with respect. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t tolerate any more BS than they do, but that’s why we get along. I know our segment of society isn’t filled with Rocket Scientists, but that’s why we hang out together, on the island of Misfit Toys. We have passion for the open road, booze, babes, beer, parties, etc. Most of us have full time jobs, but we like to kick life in the A$$ every chance we get. We don’t play softball, join bowling leagues, we ride motorcycles. We hang out together and we laugh, and leave our problems around the last bend at every chance we get. How do you treat other Clubbers? Or if you aren’t in a club, how do you treat other “People” who are of the same mind set as you? Do you Bully them? Does your patch make you better than them? I’m sure you’ve
I also know the fellowship of joining an organization who other MC’s hate due to their history. I’ve been there. It’s a shame really, knowing that we are really cut from the same cloth, have the same ambitions and interests, but hate each other for some $h%! that went
heard the saying that the Man makes the patch, not the other way around. Perhaps you’re just an A-Hole in general. I know plenty of guys like that on the scene. They don’t impress me. It only puts all of their insecurities right out on front street for everyone to see. If I show you respect, its only because I see you as an equal, not as someone better than me, or to be revered by me. It’s because you are the same as me, on the inside. I may not call you Brother, but unless I see a reason to hate you, then I don’t. Do I have haters? Of course I do. I don’t think I specifically have done anything to them to make them hate me, some don’t need a reason to hate, others are just miserable fools anyways, who hate seeing anyone else happy. That’s their problem, not mine. Do you know where most of them are? I don’t either.. I don’t mind, and they don’t matter. I hope you are the Real History of a Biker. Most of them, Men and Women come from a segmented society who would never leave someone behind, who would share what they have with you, and expect the same in return, who would not want to see someone suffer, but would want to see them laugh and party with them. Pass the joint and the bottle of homemade wine or shine. Those are the people worthy of my society, the people who know that you only get what you give. I appreciate your time, from the Sunny South! BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Personal Safety: 7 Ways to Diminish Your Chance of Being a Victim by Michelle Cerino
Over the years I’ve attended several courses and read many books and articles about personal safety. Offered here are 7 key aspects to increase your safety, no matter where you are. 1. Awareness Every personal safety list seems to begin here, so mine will too. An aware person knows something exists, whether it’s a situation, a condition or a problem. Someone who is aware understands what’s going on in the environment around her. She feels, experiences and notices sounds, sensations and emotions. As an aware person, you will be alert to whoever and whatever is around you. This will shorten your reaction time should something happen. Don’t be surprised— instead, be aware. 2. Attitude Looking like you know exactly where you are going and what you are doing can keep you from being a target. Walk with an authoritative posture; keep your head high. Acknowledge strangers as you walk past them. Look them in the eyes and give a nod of the head or a smile. If a possible attacker knows you can identify him, perhaps he will pass you by. If someone asks for the time or directions, be courteous, but keep your distance and keep moving. 3. Visualization The body won’t go where the mind hasn’t been. That’s why it’s important to visualize what will you do when you are attacked. Focus on “if, then” thinking instead of “when, then” thinking. Visualize the attack and play it out in your mind with an ending where you win. Having a plan will help you avoid freezing when something happens. Expect the unexpected and you won’t get caught off guard. 4. Boundaries Draw a line in the sand. Distance is your friend, so have a predetermined distance you will allow someone to come toward you. This may be different depending on your location, who you’re with, and the time of day. If someone reaches that 72
distance and you do not feel comfortable, cross the street or change directions. Use your voice and tell them, “Stay back.” Always maintain a safe distance. 5. Instinct Whether it’s gut instinct, women’s intuition, or a sixth sense, many of us have had that “feeling” we call instinct. When the hair on the back of your neck stands up, it’s your mind picking up on something unnatural. Unfortunately, with society demanding “political correctness,” some women won’t act on their instinct to avoid a situation. When you feel something just isn’t right, make a change. If an elevator door opens and your gut tells you not to get in, don’t. If you’re already on an elevator, and someone gets on who raises a flag, press the button for the next floor and get off. Worrying about overreacting may cause you to hesitate or maybe even ignore your intuition. It’s better to be safe than sorry. 6. Escape Be aware of the way out. If you are in a store, doctor’s office or any public building, make note of emergency exits when you enter. When outdoors, if your instinct tells you something is wrong, run straight to a group of people, or head into a building where you can see people. Yell along the way to draw other people’s attention. 7. Determination Should you become a target, never give up. Even if you’re injured, keep fighting. When law enforcement practices training scenarios, the good guy never dies. This helps build the mindset to continue fighting, no matter what it takes. You will win and get home to your family. I believe having the proper mindset is what will help me win the day. As mentioned above, I have read many books that helped me get to where I am today. Here is a list of those books. The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker Left of Bang by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes—and Why by Amanda Ripley There is always the possibility you could become a victim. If you expect it to happen, you will be better prepared to avoid it and respond without hesitation. Do your research, put personal safety in your hands, have the right state of mind and stay safe. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Tested: Inland Manufacturing M37 Trench Shotgun by B. Gil Horman, AmericanRifleman.com Editor’s Note - I recently had the opportunity to handle the new M37 Trench Shotgun from Inland Manufacturing, an Ohio company that is dedicated to producing replicas of World War II-era firearms right here in the Buckeye State! Right away I was struck by the quality of the firearm and thought that it would be a great subject for a product review. I quickly discovered, though, that our friends at the NRA had recently done a first rate review in the American Rifleman. We are pleased to share that here. For more from Gil and the NRA, you can visit www.AmericanRifleman. org. And of course, you can join the NRA by visiting www. buckeyefirearms.org. Founded in 2013, Inland Manufacturing is a company dedicated to producing faithful replicas of World War II-era firearms here in the United States. The company›s first offerings included G.I.- type 1911 pistols and several versions of the M1 Carbine. New for 2016, Inland is offering a replica of the 12-ga. Ithaca Model 37 «trench gun» (or riot gun) shotgun. I had an opportunity to meet with Ron Norton, president of Inland Manufacturing, to learn more about what precipitated the release of this shotgun. He said several factors played a role. The company had plans to provide World War II re-enactors and those who wish to participate in period 3-gun competitions with a complete set of firearms, so a shotgun was needed to round out the pistol and rifle offerings. Their research confirmed that the Ithaca Model 37 was one of the most highly sought after models of the era because of its reliability and smooth operation. Since it has been out of production for over 40 years, an historically accurate replica would be of real interest to collectors as well as re-enactors. To ensure the authenticity, quality and reliability of its new M37, Inland teamed up with theIthaca Gun Company, whose headquarters are just 80 miles away from the Inland plant. As a result, the M37 looks right, runs nicely and is 100 percent American made. 74
The new M37 is a manually operated pump-action 12-ga. shotgun with a 3” chamber. Despite its vintage appearance, this shotgun is manufactured using modern materials and up-to-date manufacturing techniques. This means the M37 can safely fire shotgun shells loaded to standard, high velocity and magnum pressure levels with payloads including birdshot, buckshot and slugs. The shotgun is made entirely from carbon steel treated with a matte-black Parkerized finish. The only piece of

polymer to be found is the black butt plate attached to the shoulder stock. The 20” barrel features a fixedcylinder bore choke and a bead-type front sight. Clamped to the muzzle is the distictive M1917 Bayonet lug, with an integral shoulder sling loop, which also supports a 12” long ventilated heat shield, or handguard if you prefer. The tubular magazine located below the barrel accepts up to four 12-ga. shells for a total of five shots with one in the chamber.

commonly found on sporting shotguns these days. The slide release rests along the right side of the trigger guard with the cross-bolt safety located behind the trigger. It’s interesting to note that the safety has an exposed detent on the left side which is something you don’t see in newer models. The sliding fore-end is fitted with a rounded and grooved walnut grip with a plain non-reflective oil finish. Most current production shotguns have slides fitted with a left- and rightside extension to engage the bolt assembly. But true to form, the M37 has only the left-side extension. The steel receiver follows the Browning Model 17 design, which means it does not have the right-side ejection port found on Remington, Winchester and Mossberg shotguns. Instead, spent shell casings are

ejected downward out of the loading port. This feature gives the shotgun a tactical advantage in that it does not advertise the operator’s location by flinging spent shells sideways into the air. It also means shooting companions standing to the right won’t need to dodge flying hulls. The top of the receiver is grooved to reduce glare. The rounded trigger guard is a combat-ready steel model that can certainly handle more abuse than the less durable polymer guards
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
The trigger is a smooth-faced steel bow with a refined feel that can easily compete with the best tuned
1911 triggers on the market. It was exceptionally smooth with no take-up and a very short arch of travel (0.02” according to my digital calipers). The trigger broke cleanly with 4 lbs. 7 oz. of trigger pull. It should be noted here that the trigger mechanism of the M37 will not allow the gun to “slam fire.” The original Ithaca 37 allowed the operator to hold the trigger down causing the shotgun to fire as each round was “slammed” into the chamber. This means the gun would OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

fire as fast as the solider could work the slide. The Inland M37 requires the trigger to be cycled for each shot and will not fire if the trigger is held down as a round is chambered. The smooth, unembellished solidwalnut shoulder stock has a traditional pistol grip and is tightly fitted to the receiver. The polymer butt plate is partially serrated and held in place by two screws. A second steel sling mount is located near the butt plate. I put the M37 through its paces at the shooting range with a mix of low and high brass in 2¾” and 3” 12-ga. shotgun shells. I soon learned that under this shotgun’s gruff combat exterior was a precision-machined mechanism that would be at home in a top-notch competition gun. Everything about its operation was smooth and comfortable to work with. The movement of the slide, the interior of the loading port, the trigger, and the loading and ejection of ammunition: it was all buttery smooth. The M37 was also reliable. I had no ammunition related or mechanical problems in the course of testing. The shotgun was patterned with four different loads. It was fired from a standing position into OPSGEAR RED Silhouette paper targets set at 7 yards from the muzzle.
Federal Premium offers a devastating 3» high brass Magnum load stuffed with 41 pellets of #4 Buckshot that fly along at 1100 fps. I always bear down and get ready for the recoil produced by this shell but it still rocks me back each time. The #4 buckshot spread out to form an 8.50» pattern.
Hornady’s Critical Defense 2¾» high brass round is loaded with 8 pellets of 00 Buckshot to a velocity of 1600 fps. It had a more manageable level of felt recoil and formed the tightest group of the test with a pattern of just 2.50».
Aguila’s 2¾” Standard Velocity Sporting Clays low brass shell, loaded with 11/8 oz. of 7½ Birdshot launched at 1225 fps. produced a moderate level of felt recoil and formed the largest pattern of the test with a spread of 10.00”.
The last round was Winchester’s hybrid PDX1 Defender 2¾» high brass round. This shell launches a single 1-oz. rifled lead slug followed by three pieces of copper-plated 00 buckshot at 1150 fps. This target is a little harder to read because of multiple impacts from the fracturing wad. The slug formed the center of a 3.75» pattern with the three 00 buckshot pellets striking at the 12-, 6- and 9-O›clock positions.
Inland Manufacturing’s new M37 Trench Shotgun, built in conjunction with Ithaca Gun Manufacturing, is a faithful replica of an iconic shotgun that collectors and shooting enthusiasts can both enjoy. Like other Inland offerings, this shotgun exhibits meticulous attention to detail while providing a high level of quality and reliability. Take the M37 out for a spin on the WWII re-enactment shooting circuit or stage it as a home-defense gun, it can easily serve in either capacity. Reprinted with Permission. www.BuckeyeFirearms.org

Gravitate Jeans as told by, The Iron Cowboy I’ve long thought that while black leather gets all the attention – it’s actually denim that is the true biker’s fabric. Even if you’re not much for denim vests or denim shirts with cut off sleeves – go on, admit that you have one or two in the back of your closet; I’d bet the ranch that you have at least one or two pairs of jeans that you cycle through as your standard “uniform”. I certainly do, but I’m the first to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with my denim. Whether it’s wearing the same pair for days on end or just a regular schedule of 12-18 hour days of working hot, humid motorcycle events throughout the summer – I abuse my jeans, and frankly they seem to give it right back. After long days they accumulate sweat and get heavier throughout the day, getting less and less comfortable. They often bunch up, wear out quickly, or simply tear at the worst time possible. I also have the additional challenge of being a big guy. I’m a solid 6’ and after years of lifting and sports back in the day I have solid legs that each seem to be the average total waist size of folks these days, going by the jeans I find in stores. I’ve tried buying fancy jeans that seem to be more about the stitching on the back pocket than anything else and certainly weren’t designed for anyone working. I’d spend 3-4x what I would on average pair of jeans to see if they were really worth it, and they would last half as long. So, I pretty much settled into a routine of buying basic jeans that never really felt very comfortable and rarely lasted. They also usually looked like something – well, let’s just say I’ve never really felt that style was a big consideration for companies making big guy jeans.
The most noticeable thing about Gravitate Jeans is that they have a “Comfort Panel” that runs the entire inseam of both legs. At first I thought that this seemed rather gimmicky, and I could appreciate the fact that the panels were rather subtle on the jeans I picked out. From the moment you try the jeans on, though, you can tell the difference. There’s immediately just a sense that they fit. As a bigger guy, that’s not really something I’m used to in jeans. And it’s not that they are just flexing around the waist, they fit comfortably around my legs – which is usually a challenge with the way mine are built. For those of you in the Midwest or possibly otherwise just familiar with the Wetzel Biker Bash, I’d like to start off by saying that I tested these jeans out during this year’s bash and the nonstop week leading up to it. During this time I hosted several motorcycle events, essentially did two complete laps around the state delivering magazines, and had far more 18 hour days than 8 (what’s that?). The week culminated with the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Wetzelland Biker Bash. This non-stop celebration of bikerdom and freedom always seems to be on the hottest days of summer – and this year was no exception. Despite the slightly overcast days and light breezes,
it was still hotter than anything and STILL my Gravitate Jeans made it through. I’m not really sure how the “Comfort Panel” works or if it’s the fabric that’s used elsewhere that makes the difference, but these are the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever owned. Not only do they seem to constantly adjust and flex to fit the movement of my legs, without riding up or down – the fabric is extremely breathable. Despite the long days, long hours in the truck and on the bike, and the extreme heat of Wetzel – my jeans always felt comfortable and never seemed to get the sweaty, bunched up spots that seem to plague my other jeans and serve as a constant irritation late in the day. Your best source for Gravitate Jeans is their website - gravitatejeans. com In addition to a nice selection of styles for both men and women – including plus sizes; the website also has an interesting Blog that discusses their jeans amongst other things. I’m going to turn to their blog to better explain how the jeans work and why they are so comfortable.
Last year, I came across Gravitate Jeans as part of our Sturgis Edition – but I admittedly dismissed them as just another biker “theme” clothing line that was heavier on price and style than substance. A year later, as we prepared for this year’s Sturgis Edition I happened to be getting ready to run out for jeans when I came across the ad for Gravitate Jeans and decided that I’d give them a try. What did I have to lose? Nothing as it turns out. I can pretty much sum up the entire article with the simple statement that, “I wish I had just ordered a few pairs a year ago.” 88 88

That’s why regular jeans just won’t do.
What makes our denim motorcycle jeans so different from competition? It all comes down to one thing: Our Patented Comfort Panel. This panel runs the length of the entire inseam of both legs, and solves the two problems that regular jeans cause, providing extra stretch where you need it most. Our motorcycle jeans don’t bunch up. That’s the whole point of the comfort panel. They stay put whether you’re riding your bike, sitting in a restaurant, or walking. Our biker jeans are breathable. That means you don’t have to sweat and swelter no matter where you are. Because our comfort panel is made of stretch denim, air can circulate, giving you a more temperate—and therefore comfortable—experience. As an added bonus, Gravitate’s Comfort Panel runs through the inner-seam area, eliminating the need for the center seam. With the center seams removed, our jeans contour to your shape, reducing annoying gathering and riding up at the inner legs and seat areas that other jeans are prone to. That makes them more comfortable than the competition for riding, or any other activity.

It’s also certainly worth noting that in my humble opinion, the Gravitate Jeans also look good as well. In the men’s jeans, the comfort panels blend in nicely with the rest of the denim and aren’t really noticeable to others. For the women’s, they offer all sorts of different styles ranging from skulls and flames to bold contrasting colors for the Comfort Panels. For me, I liked the subtle panels and the slightly faded look of the Blue Mountain style. I also picked up a pair of the Black Canyon – black denim jeans. It’s worth noting that they seemed to hold their color far better than any other pair of black jeans I’ve owned. It may be slight blend (1% spandex) that prevents it from fading like others – as well as making the jeans so comfortable. I intentionally held off saying the “S” word – because I don’t want you to think that these look like yoga pants (Not that there’s anything wrong with yoga pants on a dude..) There is only 1% spandex blended into the denim covering most of the jeans (99% cotton / 1% spandex – according to the website). The “Patented Comfort Panel” is 97% cotton denim and 3% spandex – and even that looks like regular denim.
THUNDER ROADS OHIO
Just because you want to ride doesn’t mean you want your jeans to—and that’s exactly what regular denim jeans do. They ride. Up your legs. Heavy denim, bunched up around your legs through the inside of the thighs, can make for an uncomfortable day anywhere, let alone on the road, especially during the summer which is when most bikers are out on their motorcycles.
In terms of look, I’ll leave that to you and your personal opinion. I’m sharing a few photos that other customers have provided, courtesy Gravitate Jeans. You can get a better look at the jeans themselves at gravitatejeans.com. While you’re there, I’d recommend trying a pair. I’m confident that you won’t be disappointed in the comfort of build of the jeans. They are my new favorite pairs – and my uniform on the road. I’ll check back later and let you know how they hold up under my frequent and extended use. Until then – I’m out!

Serve 6-8 (or 4 hungry bikers) 2 tbsp oil 1 onion, diced 2 tbs garlic, minced 1/2 diced celery 1/2 cups diced green bell pepper ½ cup red pepper, diced (I used jarred roasted peppers) 2 cups uncooked rice (I use half brown half wild) 8 cups chicken broth/stock 2 cups fresh spinach ½ lb cooked chicken breast - cubed or shred ½ lb smoked sausage - sliced ½ lb shrimp, diced or sliced (optional) ¼ tsp celery seed 1 tsp Italian seasoning 1 tsp lemon juice ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional) ¼ tsp cayenne pepper Salt and black pepper to taste • • • •
In a stock pot heat the oil and sauté the onions, garlic, celery, green pepper and red pepper until tender. Add in the rice and cook another few minutes. Stir in the broth/stock, spinach, chicken, sausage and any other meats you want to add. Add in the celery seed, Italian seasoning, lemon juice, red pepper, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil then cover and reduce heat to low and allow to simmer 45 minute – check to be sure rice is cooked then serve with garlic toast

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... “I will, if you can tell me the difference between slowing down, and coming to a complete stop.” the yuppie said, folding his arms across his chest. Slow Down or Stop?
The police officer had just pulled over a yuppie on a new Harley for running a stop sign. “May I see your driver’s license and registration please...” the officer asked. “What’s the problem, officer?” the yuppie replied. “You just ran a stop sign.” the officer said. “Oh come on, pal, there wasn’t a single car anywhere in sight.” “Nevertheless sir, you are required to come to a complete stop, look both ways, and only then proceed with caution.” “You’ve got to be kidding me!” the yuppie said. “It’s no joke sir.” the officer said flatly, pulling out his citation book and preparing to write a ticket. “Look I slowed down almost to a complete stop, saw no one, and proceeded with caution.” The officer sighed and slowly shook his head. “That’s beside the point sir, you are supposed to come to a complete stop and you didn’t. Now if I may see your license and...” the officer began. “You sure do have a lot of time on your hands pal. What’s the matter, all the doughnut shops closed this early?” the yuppie asked sneering.
A smile appeared on the officer’s face. “Sir, I can do better than that.” The police officer quickly jerked the rude yuppie off his Harley, and proceeded to methodically beat him over the head with his nightstick. “Now sir, would you like for me to slow down or come to a complete stop?” Pearly Gates... A guy is at the Pearly Gates, hoping to be admitted, and St. Peter says to the guy, “I can’t see that you did anything really good in your life, but you never did anything bad either. I tell you what, if you can tell me one really good deed that you did, you’re in.” So the guy says, “Once I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang’s leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head but with hair all over his body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear. Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, ‘You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You’re all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!’” Impressed, St. Peter says, “Really? I can’t seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?” “Oh, about two minutes ago.”
“SIR!” The officer sighed. “I’ll over look that last comment now let me see your license and registration immediately!”

This little old lady decides one day that she wants to join a biker club, so she goes down to her local club and knocks on the door. The door is opened by a big hairy biker with a beard, who’s covered in tattoos. “I’d liked to join your club,” says the little old lady. The biker is amused by this and decides to play along, telling her, “Ok, but you’ve got to meet the requirements first. Do you have a bike?” The little old lady points to a Harley and says, “Yeah, that’s my bike there.” The biker is surprised but says, “And do you smoke?” The little old lady says, “Yeah, I smoke 20 cigarettes a day, and when I’m shooting pool I’ll smoke a few cigars too.” The biker is impressed and says, “And have you ever been picked up by the Fuzz?” The little old lady says, “No, but I’ve been swung around by the nipples a few times.
