We’ve made a lot of effort in our magazine to focus on Ohio and all that makes this one of the best riding states in America. This year we have teamed up with the Ohio Festivals and Events Association to help promote the many unique community events that happen throughout the riding season. These are not necessarily “biker events” but they are motorcycle friendly festivals that make great stops for those looking for something fun to do for the weekend. From the Wellston Coal Festival to the Geneva Grape Jamboree, we’d encourage you to join us for these community events that celebrate Ohio and all we have to offer. You’ll find these festivals and links to their websites in our expanded Events Section, starting on page 94. This grassroots networking approach is what has separated us from the crowd and allowed us to develop solid partnerships with many events and organizations across Ohio. Rather than simply trying to sell ads or exploit the riding community, we look to actively promote and help develop the events and organizations we work with. When we take part in a fundraiser, ride, or seminar - we don’t simply show up for the buffet or cocktail hour. We attend the seminars, cover the event, and often times set up our own displays and actively work to help support the organization we are working with. It’s through this approach that we have developed partnerships that we value greatly. This past winter we teamed up with Rich Robinson and the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club to help out with the Summit County Motorcycle Events Calendar. This is an annual project that they produce which covers a wide range of events occurring within the Akron / Canton area. They were in need of a new printer, and we offered to help. Obviously we print a “few things here and there” so we offered to assist in the layout and production as well. This month the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club, one of the oldest AMA Sanctioned Clubs in the nation, will begin distributing the calendars which we are proud to be a part of. The proceeds of the calendar benefit local youth charities and events within the area. We hope that they are well received and we thank Rich and the GAMC for the opportunity. (You can find a link to the calendar on our website ThunderRoadsOhio.com) This is the type of business we are in – developing partnerships and promoting the motorcycle community. The magazine is the vehicle that makes things possible and conveys the message – but it’s just the beginning. The support of you as a reader of Thunder Roads Ohio and our advertisers / sponsors allow us to do so much more, and we are grateful for the opportunity.

Pennsylvania and possibly being included in their Innagural Edition – email us for more information. ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com There are plenty of great roads to explore in PA – looking forward to featuring more that way with the help of our new partners. Quaker Steak & Lube Turns 40! In March of 1974, Gary “Moe” Meszaros and George “Jig” Warren bought a vacant automobile service station in Sharon, PA and converted it into a restaurant and bar appropriately named “Quaker Steak & Lube”. As they say, the rest is history. It’s forty years later, and Quaker Steak & Lube is the nation’s premier motorsports themed dining concept. “The Lube” serves over 80 million wings annually and is a favorite riding destination for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts every week throughout the riding season. Thunder Roads Ohio would like to recognize Quaker Steak & Lube and its founders for all that they have done to help promote the motorcycle community. There’s a lot of motorsports passion that goes into every Lube – from the vehicles and memorabilia in the restaurants to their weekly bike nights; and it all started in Sharon, PA forty years ago. Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to be partnering with Quaker Steak & Lube for their celebration of the 40th Anniversary of their Sharon location. Look for updates right here in TRO on festivities planned throughout the summer – culminating in some exciting stuff later this season. Two more launches from Harley MILWAUKEE (March 6, 2014) – Harley-Davidson (NYSE:HOG) is at it again. Fresh off the unveiling of the new Harley-Davidson Street 750 and the launch of Project RUSHMORE, the company unleashed today two new motorcycles that expand its diverse line-up of street bikes, and put more models for more riders on the showroom floor of each Harley-Davidson dealer. The mid-year release of the retro-cool Low Rider and rangy SuperLow 1200T completes the largest new-model launch in Harley-Davidson’s 110-year history and keeps the throttle pinned on the company’s accelerated, customer-led

product-development process. “It’s been a fantastic six months for us,” said Matt Levatich, Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer. “First Project RUSHMORE, then HarleyDavidson Street, now the new SuperLow 1200T and Low Rider models -- all are the result of being customer led and delivering riders the technical prowess and rebellious spirit that they want infused in each and every new Harley.” For more on the NEW Low Rider, see our feature on page 38.

Blessing of the Bikes May 18, 2014 Welcome Stadium, Dayton www.BlessingoftheBikesSWOhio.com While weather may allow earlier opportunities, riding season in Southern Ohio kicks off with the 14th Annual Blessing of the Bikes in Dayton. This incredible event involves thousands of bikes and grows every year, as more and more come out to have their bikes blessed for the upcoming season and partake in biker festivities – including live entertainment, a custom bike show, motorcycle stunt show, and over 40 vendors offering everything from food to chaps. The “Blessing of the Bikes” blesses the riders and passengers for a safe riding season, while at the same time, is raising funds for two of our local charities: A Special Wish Foundation and the GREENEBUCS local chapter of AMBUCS.

In a nondenominational ceremony, Clergy from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, coordinated by Deacon Greg Cecere, individually walk through the parked bikes to bless each and every bike and their riders, often stopping to pray with riders for their special request. This is a national event hosted by the Dayton Moose Lodge 73 Moose Riders in conjunction with A.B.A.T.E. of Ohio. Thunder Roads Ohio has joined in as a promotional partner and will be hosting a Thunder Run Stop at the Blessing. We be covering the Bike Show and featuring the finalists in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Cart Party.” Every paid admission is also an entry in a drawing for a brand new 2014 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King presented in cooperation with Jim’s Harley-Davidson in Mendon. No glass, no firearms, no pets, no ATV’s, and certainly NO ATTITUDES. This is Wetzel and if you haven’t been there – you don’t know what you’re missing out on.

Wetzelland returns for its 28th installment with a solid lineup of entertainment including headliners – Firehouse, Warrant, and Scott Staap from Creed on Saturday night. And for the 27th consecutive year – The 69 Band, The Dogz, and our good friends the Burnt River Band will be playing both Friday and Saturday night! Wetzel is a classic, old school biker event which isn’t for everyone – but if you want to just kick back and have a great time with a few thousand close friends, it’s the place for you! Admission is $50 per person and includes camping and free motorcycle parking for the entire weekend. Vehicle parking is $10, RV’s and Campers are $200, and new this year – Golf Carts are $100. This is a new wrinkle and is explained right on the 2014 flyers – “Reason for increase in golf carts, This is a Biker Party, Not a Golf

Thunder Roads Ohio will once again be attending and setting up. This year we will be helping out with and covering the Bike Show and Tattoo Contest as well. Both are great shows, and the old school rodeo games round out the days spent relaxing along the unique 4 acre “bar and shield” pond that sits in the middle. Wetzel is a strictly 21 and over party. If you don’t mind a little dust on your chrome and camping in a field with thousands of bikers – we STRONGLY recommend Wetzel. It’s what an old school biker bash is supposed to be.

Thunder On The Strip September 4-7th, 2014 Geneva-On-The-Lake, Ohio www.thunderonthestrip.com Geneva-on-the-Lake is one of the coolest little vacation towns in America, and it’s the perfect setting for a “you don’t want to miss” motorcycle rally to wrap up the season in Northeast Ohio. Four full days of fun on the Strip with friends from all across the Midwest. Every year we go and make new friends – and we all then meet up the next year. It’s really that kinda of event. Thunder Roads Ohio helps host the Thunder Zone at Sportsterz every year – and every year the party just gets bigger and bigger. Hope to see you there.

Devil’s Staircase Sunday, October 12, 2014 Oregonia, Ohio www.daytonmc.com This is the 65th Anniversary of one of the most exciting motorcycle events in the nation – the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb. It’s hosted by the Dayton Motorcycle Club and Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to have become a partner in this historic event which promises to be one of the biggest in years. It’s a one day event, with the gates opening at 9am and the first bike heading up the hill at 1pm. Last year we helped host their first ever Bike Show with Pat Patterson and Led Sled Customs. We had a great turn-out and are certain that this year’s show will be even better. Plans are underway to make this year’s hillclimb even more memorable as we celebrate it’s 65th running. Look for announcements in upcoming issues of Thunder Roads Ohio. This is truly a unique event, unlike anything else on this list. It blends the excitement of Pro Hillclimb racing – pitting riders and machines against the hill – with the atmosphere of an old school biker event with an incredible sense of camaraderie and fun that you just can’t find anywhere else. If you’ve never attended, you absolutely need to add this to the calendar.

Beginning

Beginning is something we all experience: beginning of life (our birth), attending school, first overnighter, first kiss, first time behind the wheel, first time straddling the seat of a motorcycling, attending motorcycling events, even writing an article for a publication such as this. Some ‘firsts’ are scary, others challenging, and others both scary & challenging.

I remember the first time I straddled a motorcycle in 1963. It was a Bridgestone 90 Trail, and at the time it felt like a big bike. Now my ride of choice is an Ultra classic, but from time to time I’ve taken a Boss Hoss for a test ride only to find that when I get back on my Ultra Classic – it seems a bit small. In the early winter months of 2014 I have had the opportunity to attend the IMS Show in Cleveland where manufactures put on display what they feel is the best in the market for different styles and types of rider. At the Easyrider Bike Show in Columbus where builders put their talents to the task of making that unique one-of-a-kind ride and paint jobs to match; some in memory of events and/or people. These are beginnings for both manufacturers and builders. There’s another “Beginning” we each face, and that’s a beginning with Jesus Christ. Revelations 3:20, NAS, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” See, Jesus is seeking each of us. He’s not like that overbearing boss who is constantly looking over your shoulder and hounding you to answer, but He is like the friend who stands with you showing they care. Like no other, Jesus is there. Will you answer the door today and start your “Beginning” with Him? He’s knocking! GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE MARCH 2014

As of March 4, 2014, HB 406, the Road Guarding Bill has been introduced and sponsor testimony was given by Rep. Landis and Rep. Green. This bill creates a training program and certification process for non-law enforcement personnel to block and/or direct traffic. There is law in Minnesota and legislation in Washington and Iowa that in general do the same thing. Motorcyclists participate in group rides a lot of the time to raise money for charity or a benefit to help someone in need of financial assistance due to medical issues. When we have group rides it is common to have participants that are from out of the area and do not know the roads. We ride together to make sure no one gets lost or if there is mechanical breakdown there is someone there to help get assistance. We ride in groups to ensure our safety. Motorcyclists often hear that we are difficult to see because of the size of our vehicle. Riding in groups makes us more visible. It is common practice on a group ride at an intersection for one or two bikes to stop in the path of other oncoming traffic to make sure the group stays together. This is not a new or rare activity. It goes on every weekend during riding season in every community. HB 406 gives training and certification to ensure this type of activity is done safely and legally.

At this point the only group that we know of that are opposed to this legislation is the Fraternal Order of Police. We have talked to other law enforcement that supports this legislation. ABATE of Ohio is currently looking for people willing to provide testimony in support of this bill. We are looking for charities that benefit from our rides. We are also looking for law enforcement at any level that supports this legislation to provide testimony. Testimony can be given in person at the State House during a hearing for the bill and it can also be submitted in writing prior to the hearing to Rep. Green or Rep. Landis. Anyone wishing to testify and has additional questions call me at 937-997-2396. Other than that I hope everyone makes it out to the Awareness Rally on May 3, 2014. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relation Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. woody702001@yahoo.com

SAFETY UPDATE

Everywhere I go and everyone I talk to, the subject is Spring. When is it finally going to get here? When can we finally go for a ride? When will this winter ever end? I’m sure you are hearing and talking about the same. Since my job is Safety and Education, I want to educate you that when Spring finally does break, you will need to activate all your safety maneuvers to have a trouble free riding season. First off, the roads are a mess. Remember your evasive moves when you come up on a pothole suddenly. Slow down where the road heaved & settled to go over the bumps. Snowplows put lots of stones and crap in people’s yards and they are going to be throwing all that back on the roads. Also, where there was standing water on the roads during the melting can be slippery. Watch out for debris. Second, people are not used to seeing motorcycles on the road yet so you have to watch out for them. Be extra aware at intersections, of cars passing as they are coming at you, in heavier traffic and driveways on country roads. Use the 15, 30 second scan to identify hazards. Third, we will be so excited to finally be back on our bikes that we will be a little spirited. Make sure spirited does not go out of control. Do not over-throttle when taking off from a full stop. Do not over party and then ride home. Even if you are an experienced biker, you can benefit from MO training and/or practice in the parking lot down the street. Practice panic stops, handlebar maneuvering, tight figure 8 turns, scanning, etc. If you don’t know what some of these mean, you definitely need to take the MO course. There is nothing worse than wrecking your bike and having to sit out while everyone else is riding, The most important ABATE event in the Spring is the Motorcycle Awareness Ride on Saturday, May 3. Even non-ABATE members can participate to remind the general public that motorcycles are back on the road. Obviously, more bikes means more Awareness, more publicity and more membership. Ask your friends to come with you. For more information see the flier in this magazine or online at ABATE.com. See you there. Be Safe! Ride Within Your Limits, Mike Stock mikestock419@gmail.com 20

From the Back of the Bike

A

BY NANCY BEACH

pril showers bring….the sounds that we love to hear! Spring is in the air. Between the cold temps and blizzard conditions, those few days of sunshine really got everyone in a great mood and we somehow knew that it would all be over soon. So, because I love those days when it’s sunny, as we all do, I felt I had to include a few pictures of some dedicated souls hitting the road while the snow was piled up around them. If anything says spring, it bikers out riding like it was July! You all have been there or witnessed this many times. But it still is neat to see. Especially when we are coming off of one of the worst winters in many, many years. The picture of the two bikes was taken in North Olmsted, right outside of Cleveland. It’s a father and son that ride together. So thank you to the guys at the Blue Turtle for allowing me to shoot your bikes. The lone bike was taken in Sandusky on Jackson Street Pier. A day later that spot had 8 inches of snow so I’m glad our friends got those rides in when they had a chance. Here is to many more rides to come because it is April and spring is finally here! And you know what that means. Get your bike ready and your motor running…It is time to plan on doing some fun things this summer! So…Let’s start planning!!! Have you ever been to Ohio Bike Week? If you have, I don’t need to say anything to you so you can skip right down to the last paragraph. If you haven’t, get comfortable and read this carefully. First and foremost…you must go to OBW! There are 10 days of activities and fun stuff with great bands, poker runs and trips to the islands. Sandusky becomes a biker’s paradise and you can’t beat the location…overlooking Sandusky Bay! The huge and famous Block Party is the last 3 days and the entire downtown area is filled with people and bikes of all kinds including some custom bikes that are definitely worth seeing! Vendors are everywhere so you will find everything that you could possibly want to buy or enough choices of food that you will not go hungry. Add to that scenario some well-established local places where you can eat and drink and enjoy the sunshine from many of the outdoor patios and decks. Many of the local businesses will have specials and go out of their way for the crowd. You will feel welcome and you can’t find 22

friendlier people than the locals and of course, your fellow bikers! Whether you come for the day, the weekend or the entire event, you will find it amazing and you will always want to return. Thunder Roads will be there with their Thunder Zone in the middle of the action in the downtown area at the Sandusky State Theatre. Many activities will be held at the theatre and we will have a comprehensive list for you next month. So here are my plans for this summer. Attend Ohio Bike Week every single day, talk to as many of you as I can, take some great pictures to add to my summer articles and start the whole summer off with one of the best bike experiences…experiencing Ohio Bike Week on foot and from the back of the bike! See you downtown Sandusky in June!

F X D L

Geoff Baldwin, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor www.returnofthecaferacers.com As more and more workshops produce their own version of a Cafe Racer it’s only natural that we are going to start seeing Harley Davidson based versions, but I wasn’t expecting to see many of them coming from Japan! Selected Custom Motorcycle have built this fine example of a Harley based Cafe Racer out of their workshop in Yokohama, Japan. For a workshop that usually produces choppers and bobbers one would expect a much more outlandish looking result but this Cafe Racer is all class. As originally produced.

The 2003 Harley Davidson FXDL which has been named “Elanor” was completed in 2010 and is a far cry from it’s original appearance. A custom tank and seat give the Harley it’s distinctive Cafe Racer style along with the classic and always cool, black paint job. The front and rear guards have been thrown away and a custom exhaust which molds around the big V-twin helps to lighten the look of the bike and give it a much sportier appearance (although it’s height still remains at what Harley referred to as “Low Rider” with this particular model). Elanor’s power-plant remains almost completely stock aside from a new set of Mikuni Carbs to improve low end performance. Other noteable changes to the Harley are the carbon fibre clip on bars and the red, white and blue racing stripes which are an unexpected design touch.

Bike: 1951 FL Harley Davidson Owner: Butch Hubbard of Warren, OH Inspiration: I wanted my own! Not bought - old school bike built the hard way. Built by: Me and my long-time friend Rick Lawrence built this. I had Rob Carson from 3 C’s in Cortland paint it. (Rootbeer Rob and Badass Brass) Custom touches, brass and custom pieces everywhere. Having a machinist for a friend is a big plus. Problems we encountered: There is always a list when building a bike. It’s NOT like those TV shows where in 1 hour you have a sweet custom bike... Doesn’t happen that way. But with the help of good people and alot of beer, I have something to be proud of. “YEAH ITS MINE; BUILT AT HOME” Awards: First show: 1st place in my class, also 1st Place People’s Choice Best of Show Harley on the Square Warren, OH - Warren H.O.G.

Buckeye Ingenuity The Buckeye Current Electric Motorcycle Project at Ohio State Aimee Ritz, Thunder Roads Ohio Working nonstop hours over their spring break; that’s the level of dedication of the 25 students in the Buckeye Current program at The Ohio State University. They’re building RW2.X, an extraordinary all-electric motorcycle set to compete in the Isle of Man TT Zero on June 4, 2014. After an impressive 3rd Place finish under rider Rob Barber in the 2013 TT Zero, the pressure is on to produce a podium-placing bike once again. After all, the bike has to keep its well-earned title as the World’s Fastest Collegiate Electric Motorcycle. CONTINUED...

Founded in 2010 as the Buckeye Electric Motorcycle Race Team though the OSU’s Center for Automotive Research, the team has piled up some impressive stats. The first prototype built, RW-1, set a land speed record for electric motorcycles in Maxton, North Carolina, at 112 mph. Later that year in Wilmington, Ohio, RW-1 shattered its own record by reaching 144 mph. 2013 brought success with model RW-2 at the TT. Averaging 90 mph throughout the winding TT course, RW-2 carried pro rider Rob Barber over the finish line in 3rd place! Not bad for a bunch of college kids, right?

around the course. When comparing it to automobiles, it will have as much energy as a Chevy Volt. The tricky part of the build is always stuffing as much energy into the frame as possible to make sure the bike can go the distance for the race. This year’s bike will carry 110 battery cells and student-built and designed electronics systems.

The original goal of the project was to increase student exposure to electric-powered vehicles. The lab they work in houses many OSU teams building projects including the Buckeye Bullet, a record-breaking electric land streamliner, and the EcoCAR 2, which will compete against 14 other universities to lower emissions on a popular sedan. The efforts from this one building alone may shape the way our vehicles use and produce power. This year the RW-2.X will have approximately 70 horsepower, 453 volts, and carry an average of 95-100 mph

32

Excited about the team’s entry to the Isle of Man TT Zero, Julia Cline, Buckeye Current team leader, called it “the most difficult, most prestigious, most challenging course in all of motorcycle racing”. Statistically the most dangerous motorcycle race in the world, the Isle of Man TT follows the 37 mile Snaefell Mountain Course in which riders negotiate over 200 turns. The course itself is known as the oldest motorcycle racing circuit still in use. Stay tuned with us for updates on Buckeye Current’s performance at the Isle of Man and other events throughout the year. http://current.osu.edu/ for the race pics credits and info Shop photos by Aimee Ritz, TRO

PRESENTED BY RIDER INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Rider Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

State and Stop Prizes

Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop.

Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! 34

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a BiketoberfestÒ Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

BONUS Check-in’s! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

NEW FOR 2014 – You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.

We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all

36

across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com The 2014 Buckeye Thunder Run will begin in May, with all necessary information and additional details in the May issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. We will also have a complete listing on our website – ThunderRoadsOhio.com and our facebook pages. We will include a listing of registration stops – including a wide variety of events in May; including Bike Nights, Bike Blessings, and rides.

The RIDE kicks off in May! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

2014 Harley-Davidson®

Dyna Low Rider

F

or a mid-season 2014 release, Harley-Davidson returned to the same place it unveiled the original icon in 1977 – Daytona Beach. More than forty years ago, Harley-Davidson introduced the world to the Dyna Low Rider – one of its first “factory customs” that offered up a pallet for customization and unique expression. It’s low seat height also offered new options for those not previously comfortable on many of the big v-twins.

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

It’s been five years since Harley-Davidson offered the Low Rider, and it’s clear that during that time some thought has gone into its recreation. While the bike lives up to it’s name – with a seat height of only 25.4 inches; there’s a lot more to it. At its launch, the H-D Project leader talked about how the Harley Engineers went beyond simple feet on the ground comfort – progressing to full-body ergonomics and factors that effect confidence and control while riding. With a wide range of adjustable factors, Harley claims that the bike can easily accommodate riders from 5 foot 1 to 6 foot 1 without any outside modifications. From removable bolsters on the seat to easily adjustable handlebars and risers; the bike is designed to uniquely fit a wide range of riders while still appearing stock. Beyond the creative fitment options; this is just a cool, old school Dyna that begs to be taken out and let loose. It has a nostalgic feel to it that makes this new incarnation an instant classic.

Highlights: Premium Custom Style From wheel to wheel, the all-new Low Rider® model is a low riding feast for the eyes, loaded with high-end finishes as it holds true to the heritage of all the Low Rider® motorcycles that have rolled down the streets of the world before it. From the 70’s inspired seat to the chunky mag wheels to the true, sculpted beauty and finish on its 103 cubic inch V-Twin engine, this is premium Harley-Davidson custom style to the bone. So even though you’re riding low, you’re doing it in high style.

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Perfect Fit Ergonomics Whether you’re 5’1” or 6’1”, thanks to perfect fit ergonomics, you can dial the new Low Rider® motorcycle in to fit you like a motorcycle glove. H-D® developed perfect fit through an innovative look at how riders fit on a motorcycle using both simulation and actual rider studies. The result is a unique handlebar riser that provides 6cm of movement fore and aft and an innovative, yet simple, seat design, which allows you to select from two riding positions that offer an additional 3.8cm of adjustment fore and aft. This is pure Harley-Davidson steel tailored to your body. Relocated Mid-Mount Controls The Low Rider® model gives you the confidence-inspiring riding position that comes from mid-mount foot controls. Your feet are right where you want them to be, with an easy reach to the ground when it’s time to stop. Your knees ride naturally next to the tank for a good center of gravity and balance in the corners. And the controls have been positioned to give you easy access to the jiffy stand so there’s no fishing around with your foot when it’s time to dismount. Wrinkle Black and Chrome Twin Cam 103™ Engine At the center of the Low Rider® model you’ll notice a Twin Cam 103™ engine that gets the full-on wrinkle black and chrome treatment. And at the center of that, you’ll notice a pork chop style air cleaner. True to form, the engine is the jewel of the motorcycle. Instantly recognizable as a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle on any street in the world. But if there were any confusion, the sound that it puts out would clear things up in a hurry. continued...

By Roger williams What it is: A “deconstructivist” takes on a motorcycle hillclimb, by Ohio painter Roger Williams, with layers of images that express the complexity of the subject in overlapping symbolism. What the artist says: “Chad Disbennet, the 2004 AMA National Hillclimb Champion, is a relative of mine and I wanted to do a painting of Chad with his 800cc Triumph, No. 17. The painting is deconstructed images, layers and overlaps in bright pop colors. Deconstructivist art is on-edge art that came after Postmodern art. Conceptually, you see gears, a stick of dynamite, tattoos, and just profiles of things and movement while airborne.” Currently on display at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame as part of the “2 wheels + Motor: An International Fine Art Exhibition.” Plan your visit at www.motorcyclemuseum.org Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

Tech Tips old gas

After one of the coldest winters on record, even some of the most hard core Midwest riders have left their bikes sitting for an extended period of time. “Sitting” is pretty much the worst thing possible for a motorcycle – especially if left unprepared for the lack of activity. In most cases, the biggest challenge will be your old fuel – if not properly treated with a stabilizer. While this has always been an issue – the standard use of Ethanol in our fuel makes things even worse. Condensation can also build up in the tank and possibly get water in the gas and carburetor. This can especially be a problem if the tank was left less than full or if the temperature went up and down a lot over the winter. You should ALWAYS fill up your tank with treated fuel before storing or leaving your bike to sit. Of course, we don’t always plan on leaving our rides parked for extended periods – so old fuel is often an issue we must consider. As gas gets old, it breaks down and turns into a varnish form, the last thing you want to do is try to start the motorcycle, otherwise it will try to draw all that solid varnish material into the idle and main jets, and clog them up so bad that the motorcycle will hardly idle or won’t even run until you clean them out. It is almost impossible to empty all of the fuel from any engine system so there is always old fuel somewhere in any fuel system. Straight gasoline starts to deteriorate around 3060 days and ethanol fuels break down even faster than straight gasoline. When gasoline breaks down leaving gum and varnish in fuel tanks, fuel lines, carburetors, etc. Ethanol is also a great cleaner of gums, varnishes, dirt and the rust that water in the fuel creates. That is why ethanol is used in almost every bottle of carb / injector cleaner on the market. So when you fill up your tank you introduce fresh ethanol to run through your fuel system and it will dissolve the deposits running all that crud through the engine’s fuel system clogging fuel filters, injectors, and carburetors. Clogged fuel filters will drop fuel pressures telling the regulator to work the electric fuel pump harder to keep the fuel pressure up. This will burn out fuel pumps. Gummed up carburetors and fuel injectors all lead to poor performance and all of this leads to hefty repair bills. Considering you never really know how long the E10 sits at the refinery in a holding tank before it gets transported to the pump station to sit in the underground storage tank just to be purchased by you to sit in your tank before being burned in the engine, break down of the E10 gasohol fuel can be a real issue. Pure gasoline does not absorb water but ethanol will. Ethanol is hydrophollic this means it pulls moisture from the air and bonds with it. In ideal conditions E10 gasohol will keep roughly .5% water by volume is suspended in gasoline. Our fuel tanks and fuel storage cans are hardly ideal conditions as they need to be vented allowing the ethanol to absorb more moisture from the atmosphere or in the form of condensation. Ethanol never truly bonds with gasoline molecules; it is a loose mixture at best so when the threshold of .5% water is exceeded or the E10 gasohol mixture cools off every night the water / ethanol solution falls out of suspension in the gasoline. Oil and gasoline float on water as they are lighter than water so the water /ethanol mixture will stay at the bottom of your fuel tank. The process of the water and ethanol separating from the gasoline and sinking to the bottom is 44

called “Phase Separation”. Phase Separation is a real problem because the water from the bottom of the tank is sucked up and sent to the engine it causes a lean condition raising the engine temperature causing valve damage, carburetor, fuel lines and electronic fuel injection pumps pull fuel from the bottom of the tanks where the ethanol / water mix stays and water doesn’t burn well in the engine leading to premature engine / fuel system corrosion and poor engine performance. It gets worse, ethanol and water mix in E10 gasoline is a breeding ground for microbes like bacteria and fungi which just adds to the corrosion and debris in your fuel system. All of this means that you need to do something about your old gas. If you stored your bike without adding any fuel stabilizer to your gas, the first thing you want to do is drain the fuel into a safe container without any holes in the bottom so no fuel leaks out. Pull the hose off the petcock (fuel valve) and make sure fuel comes out. Drain each float bowl on each carburetor by opening the drain valve screw on the lower outer side of each carburetor float bowl. Make sure to inspect this fuel very carefully. If it smells like bad fuel, but doesn’t have any rust or any solid varnish particles floating around. You’re good to go. Check the condition of the fuel tank. If there isn’t any debris in the tank. You can flush it out with fresh fuel and put some fresh fuel in it. Your old fuel can go into your cage (four wheeled vehicle) – if it doesn’t have any debris in it. They are far less sensitive and it will mix in with the newer fuel in the larger tank. No need to waste it. If the fuel looks OK, then put the fuel hose back on, turn the fuel valve on, and let some fuel run through the carburetors, and flush out the float bowls. Then turn the fuel valve off. Close all the drain valve screws on the floats and turn the fuel back on. Hopefully, no fuel will run out any of the hoses anymore. If it does, then you have dirt in the needle and seat portion of the float and you will have to pull the carburetors and clean them. If you drain the tank and brown sediment flows out with the fuel you will have to pull the carburetors and have them cleaned and synchronized by your local mechanic. To avoid these problems in the future, at the end of the riding season, make sure to top off the tank with fuel and add fuel stabilizer to it. With the proliferation of ethanol blended fuels – we strongly recommend regularly adding a fuel stabilizer or treatment to your tank. No matter how comfortable you keep your bike over the winter – the fuel in the tank will break down.

2014 Honda A

fter a ten year absence, Honda presents the all-new 2014 Valkyrie – a modern “muscle” cruiser propelled by an 1832cc, liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed six-cylinder, SOHC engine with PGM-FI. This is the same monster engine that powers the Gold Wing and Gold Wing F6B – stripped down to the bare essentials to give it a curb weight of 750 pounds. That’s more than 150 pounds less than the Gold Wing. To enhance the performance characteristics, Honda mounted the engine low into the Valkyrie’s twin-spar aluminum frame. This gives the bike a low center of gravity – the effect of which is amplified by a low seat height of only 28.8 inches. The result is a surprisingly comfortable and well balanced ride for a bike of this size. Honda also ramped up the stopping power of the Valkyrie with 310mm cross-drilled rotors (14mm larger in diameter) and Nissin four-piston calipers. The rear gets an even larger 316mm disc/caliper combo. Another difference from the Gold Wing is that the Valkyrie gets an independent front and rear braking system as opposed to the linked-brake system found on the Wing. Although not standard, ABS is available as an option. The modern, sporty fenders, the unique fuel tank design, the fat exhaust pipes and the stylish fairing are all working together to form a very special visual effect. Other modern touches include a LED headlight, taillight, turn signals and its multi-function digital LCD dash. The Valkyrie also features aluminum passenger grabrails and a passenger seat that can be removed to give the bike a more streamlined look. At the winter shows, the Valkyrie drew a lot of attention and has many reconsidering Honda’s position in the power cruiser market.

M

The Legend of the Bell

any years ago, on a cold December night, a crusty old biker was returning from a trip to Mexico with his saddlebags filled with toys and other assorted trinkets for the kids at a group home near where he worked. As he rode along that night, he thought about how lucky he had been in life, having a loving riding partner that understood his need to roam the highways and to his trusty old pan that hadn’t let him down once in the many years they had shared the road together.

Well, about 40 miles north of the border, in the high desert, lurked a small group of notorious little critters known as road gremlins. You know, the ones who always leave little obstacles like, one shoe, boards, and pieces of old tires on the road, and also dig those dreaded potholes for bikers to run over and crash, thus giving the road gremlins a chance to rejoice over their acts of evil. Well, as the lone wolf of a biker rounded a curve that moonlit night, the gremlins ambushed him, causing him to crash to the asphalt and skid before coming to a stop next to one of his saddlebags that had broken free. As he lay there, unable to move, the road gremlins made their way towards him. Well, this biker, not being one to give up, started throwing things at the gremlins as they approached him. Finally, with nothing else to throw but a bell, he started ringing it in hopes to scare off the dirty little gremlins. About a half a mile away, camped in the desert, were two bikers sitting around the campfire talking about their day’s ride, and the freedom of the wind blowing in their faces as they rode across this vast country. In the stillness of the night air they heard what sounded to them like church bells ringing, and upon investigating, found the old biker lying along the roadside with the gremlins about to get him. Needless to say, being part of the biker brotherhood, they proceeded to ward off the gremlins until the last ran off into the night. Being grateful to the two bikers, the old road dog offered to pay them for their help, but as all true bikers do, they refused to accept any type of payment from him. Not being one to let a good deed go unnoticed, the old biker cut two pieces of leather 52

from his saddlebags tassels and tied a bell to each one. He then placed them on each of the biker’s motorcycles, as near to the ground as possible. The tired, old road warrior then told the two travelers that with those bells placed on their bikes, they would be protected from the road gremlins and that if ever in trouble, just ring the bell and a fellow biker will come to their aid. So, whenever you see a biker with a bell, you know that he has been blessed with the most important thing in life—friendship from a fellow biker.

The Purpose of the Bell Many of us have heard the story about Evil Road Spirits. They are little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride, and they’re also responsible for most of your bike’s problems. Sometimes your turn signals refuse to work; your battery goes dead, the clutch needs adjustment, or any of several hundred things that can go wrong. These problems are caused by Evil Road Spirits. Evil Road Spirits can’t live in the presence of the bell, because they get trapped in the hollow of the bell. Among other things, their hearing is supersensitive, so the constant ringing of the bell and the confined space drives them insane. They lose their grip and eventually fall to the roadway. Have you ever wondered how potholes are formed? The bell has served its purpose. If you pick up a Bell of your own, the magic will work, but if your bell is given to you, the power is doubled, and you know that somewhere you have a special friend helping to look after you. So, if you have a friend who doesn’t have a bell, why not give them one? It’s a nice feeling for the recipient to know you care. The bell, plus a good preventive maintenance program by the bike’s owner, will help eliminate Evil Road Spirits.

Polishing the Bell It has been a tradition among some of us for a long time to attach a brass bell to our left swing arm, to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone down riding. It’s a small thing, but the reason a brass bell is chosen is that, as we ride, it gets dirty and tarnished. Every time we get down washing and polishing it, we are reminded of friends lost, and our thoughts turn to the meaning of being in the wind. As we ride and hear the bell ring, we know that our brothers and sisters are riding with us, and how easy it would be to join them with a single mistake. And maybe, just maybe, the next time a situation comes up; they will be there to help us...as long as we remember them by polishing the bell.

2014 HONDA CBR1000RR

T

he iconic Honda CBR1000RR has received a series of modifications for 2014. The new model year comes with a fresh windscreen, a revised riding position and more power. “One of the best liter bikes available - the 2014 Honda CBR100RR over delivers when it comes to making big impressions. This revamped ‘Power House’ has several new additions that keep Honda ahead of the game when it comes to making the best, even better,” Conor Maguire, General Manager at Honda Marysville.

The motorcycle continues to be propelled by the same 999cc, liquid-cooled, inline four-cylinder, DOHC engine. However, the unit is now able to deliver more power and torque due to the revised cylinderhead, exhaust and air intake. Its power is kept in leash by a close ratio six speed transmission. “Honda’s redesigned air intakes (ram air) that allows for smoother and faster airflow. Sucking down as much of that cold, sweet oxygen as it can handle. With the increase of its O2 consumption, Honda also changed the cylinder head and valve seats to increase its output efficiency,” added Maguire. 56

For enhanced safety, the Honda CBR1000RR is available with a Combined Anti-Lock Braking System (C-ABS) which is the first of its kind offered for a Superbike. Honda of Marysville’s Conor Maguire also gave us a little more insight into the new CBR’s safety features. “Don’t forget that with power and performance, Honda always keeps safety in mind. They do this with two big attractions. First is the Unit Pro-Link suspension that’s fully adjustable to fit most any rider. This way you can adjust the suspension to your individual body weight and make sure you get the best handling possible. Second off is Honda’s patented HESD or Honda Electronic Steering Dampener. This unique system not only monitors handlebar movement, but also monitors speed to adjust the dampener accordingly. This gives the rider low speed maneuverability while maintaining high speed handling that’s safe in most riding conditions.”

Some other highlights: Available Combined Anti-Lock Braking System (Electronic C-ABS) Electronically controlled C-ABS distributes brake force over both wheels, helping to maintain braking confidence in less-than-ideal conditions. The system electronically measures rider input on the brake lever and pedal, and applies only the front or rear brake in some cases or combines both brakes in other situations. LCD Instrumentation The CBR1000RR’s full-screen LCD instrumentation includes a lap timer, trip and fuel-consumption computer, five-level customizable shift indicator, gear-position indicator and peak-rpm memory function. Front and Rear Suspension The CBR1000RR features suspension in both front and rear. Up front, the 43mm Big Piston Showa fork is smoother and more responsive; in the back, the Unit Pro-Link design uses a balance-free rear shock with a double-tube design for a smoother response and better road-holding feel (traction performance). Revised Cylinder Head And Exhaust The 2014 CBR1000RR features changes to the cylinder head, including revised valve seats, machining and intake exhaust port shape. Along with modifications to the intake and exhaust systems, this creates more horsepower and torque. Gull-Wing Swingarm The CBR1000RR’s braced aluminum “gull-wing” swingarm is deliberately long. That helps deliver improved traction and gives the rider excellent chassis feedback.

TRACKSIDE w/mike weber Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

G

reetings all. I am Mike Weber, an attorney from Cincinnati Ohio. I have written in other publications about my experiences in motorcycling and motorsports over the last ten years and appreciate the invite to contribute to Thunder Roads Ohio, an excellent publication. My favorite topics are helmets, rider safety and motorcycle skills. First a little background before I proceed to irritate the American v twin crowd. I got my first dirt bike in second grade. We had trails all thru our neighborhood in Delhi so I rode constantly until I went off to college. Despite a few years away from any sort of motorsport I finally got back into it when I bought a BMW R1100s. in short order I filled the garage up with some more bikes. These included a Yamaha R1 track bike, a Triumph Bonneville and a Honda CRF450f motocrosser. I try to get them all out on a regular basis but my all time favorite thing to do on a motorcycle is track days and I have over 70 in the book. There is nothing more fun than getting a knee down in a corner scraping the puck along the asphalt. Also the riding skills that you take away from a track day are invaluable but that will be a different article. As I was not wasting money fast enough I also started racing non wing sprint cars in 2004. 2014 celebrates Weber Motorsports 10th year of car racing. We run 30 to 35 nights a year in the Midwest with Lawrenceburg Speedway being our home track. We also travel regularly to Bloomington, Gas City and Kokomo. I just bought out a modified program that was shutting its doors so we will have a modified and out winged mini sprint available this year when the schedule allows. You have probably guessed that my focus is on racing as opposed to touring, group rides or whatnot. You would be correct. You would also be correct in assuming that I have crashed all of the above. Although I probably started too late to be the next Tony Stewart I have learned I am gifted with the innate ability to crash rather spectacularly on occasion. I am kind of proud that I have crashed my way to the front page of Lawrenceburg’s Sport section 3 times. So how does this segue into irritating V Twin riders? First Harley riders traditionally don’t wear helmets. Second through the school Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

of hard knocks I have qualified myself to talk about helmets and safety. Third, whether that qualifies me or not I am still going to tell you to wear a helmet because people are nice (gullible) enough to put my ramblings in this magazine, so there. To all of the riders cruising around Ohio without a helmet on, what are you guys thinking? What follows is an article I wrote a long time ago. This is my opportunity to introduce myself to everyone and I want to talk about helmets. The article sums up my philosophy about helmets and I have never been able to come up with a better argument. I expect to alienate a number of riders with this but that’s ok. WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR A HELMET? There is a saying in motor sports that you can’t really go fast until you get a big one out of the way. A big one refers to a big, stick it on its head and tear the crap out of stuff, crash. This saying does not question whether you might crash; it assumes that you will be spectacularly crashing rather early on in your career. Simply by riding a motorcycle on the street you are involved in motor sports. If this logic holds correct you will eventually have an incident. There is a second saying; there are two types of motorcycle riders, those that have crashed and those that will crash. Again, this is not a small drop it in the garage and scratch some paint crash. Nor is it the hit some gravel in a parking lot and do a Tommy tip over. No, we are referring to a real, ought to be on You Tube, crash. If this saying is correct yes, you will have a crash. Odds are you will suffer no major injury, but those odds improve with appropriate safety equipment and preparation. This article may alienate the American V Twin riders who read this magazine. Why? Because you guys (and girls) are notorious for not wearing helmets and I am going to suggest you wear one, at least for a while. On a recent Saturday I was out riding my bicycle through New Richmond trying to burn off some excess calories. It was a beautiful day and I saw approximately 50 motorcycles during my ride.

qualified to make the decision. None of the above excuses are valid. In fact if you have truly taken a tumble and still don’t wear a helmet, (and are not suicidal) please send me an email. I am curious why you do not wear one. In a recent survey the NHTSA concluded that helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing fatalities and 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries. For every 100 people killed without a helmet almost 40 could survive. For every 100 traumatic brain injuries that happened to non helmet wearing motorcyclists you could prevent 67 by wearing a helmet. I am not playing those odds.

About 45 of these were American Twins and out of these bikes only one rider had a helmet on. The other riders and passengers did not. The remaining 5 bikes were BMW’s and Sport bikes. Each of these riders and any passengers were wearing helmets. That started me thinking about this topic. I do not believe the government should force people to wear a helmet. However, I do not believe there is any valid reason not to wear a helmet. You have the right to make a choice not to wear a helmet. But, herein is my theory. You are not qualified to make that choice until you have crashed the crap out of a motorcycle. Only after you have tumbled down the road, got up seeing stars, and asked the ambulance crew to answer the damn phone are you qualified to say, “I am not going to wear a helmet today”. Until then you are just not experienced enough to make that call. What is your current reason for not wearing a helmet?

I can assure you that I am not an ivory tower academic spouting statistics. If I am qualified to discuss anything it is crashing. My resume is impressive (not sure that is the best adjective). I have crashed the sprint car hard enough to make the front page of Lawrenceburg’s newspaper three times. I have been upside down in a sprint car nearly 10 other times. I have low sided at Mid Ohio at over 80 miles per hour. I have driven off the track at Mid Ohio at over 70 miles per hour into freshly rained upon grass in the run off area. This one tested the motorcycle sudden stop, rider ejection theory. I have broken three helmets crashing bicycles in competitive group rides or races. I have had a helmet on for each one of the above. I can’t thank the Bell, Arai and Giro Helmet companies enough. If your resume is more impressive and you still don’t wear a helmet give me a call. I would be happy to stop by your nursing home and we can talk. Mike Weber, Attorney, handles motorcycle accident and workers compensation cases in Ohio and Kentucky. He can be reached at 513 621 2260 or at MLWeber@fuse.net.

“It’s too hot.” Please. “It’s too heavy.” Is that the best you can do, so is a wheelchair. “It takes away my peripheral vision.” Wives tale. “It may catch and hurt my neck”. Statistically wrong. “I don’t want the government telling me what to do.” It is really your decision.

Mike Weber Weber, Dickey and Bellman 1726 Young Street Cincinnati Ohio 45202

I am not telling anyone they have to wear a helmet but I am suggesting a new way of looking at this. Be sure you are truly

If He was your son… A

t times over the last few years I catch myself thinking about two parents that I have never met but that have become very much a part of my prayers. I wonder what each day in their lives must be like. I think the not knowing would drive me half crazy. Of course I’m talking about Jani and Robert Bergdahl. They are the parents of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl the only American being held captive in the Afghanistan conflict. I have three sons of my own and it was hard to sleep when they would come home a little late as they were growing up. It’s hard to think about what these two parents have been going through for the last 4 ½ years. First we need to remember that Bowe is not the only missing American. He is the only missing soldier from the current conflict. I think most of you know where I stand on this subject. If there is ever one American missing it is one too many. WE MUST NEVER LEAVE ONE BEHIND! When someone joins out military they do so to defend our freedom. It seems that the least we can do as a people is to make sure they come home. There is no flag I have ever seen that moves me the way the POW/MIA flag does. As most of you know I wear a doo rag almost everyday. It is not an accident that most of them have to do with our POW/MIA. We must not let this issue be swept under some political rug. We as a people must demand that our politicians bring our soldiers home. Every Tuesday for the last three years I have shared on my Facebook page Bring Bowe home. I never thought it would still have to be shared almost 5 years after he was captured. I ride with some friends and we decided to get some of the Vietnam POW/MIA bracelets only this time with Bowe Bergdahl on them and wear them until he comes home. I had no clue it would be on still. I wear it with honor and hope his parents know they are not alone.

Sgt. Bergdahl was born March 26, 1986 in Sun Valley Idaho. Bowe was assigned to the 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He went missing on June30, 2009 in South East Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. He is believed to be held by the Haqqani network an insurgent group affiliated with the Taliban somewhere in Pakistan. There have been a few videos where he has been seen alive. The latest was dated Dec.14, 2013 and in the video he talks about the death of Nelson Mandela proving that the video was filmed recently. There are also reports out there that ay that he was drunk when captured or that he joined the Taliban. Most of the reports have been denied by the Dept. of Defense. I don’t care about the circumstances. BRING HIM HOME and we can sort all the rest out.

USA PFC Bowe Bergdahl

Image of Sgt. Bergdahl seen in video next to a senior official in the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network in Paktika province in Afghanistan.

Robert and Jani Bergdahl, parents of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

In closing I just think that we need to treat our soldiers better. They have no problem signing a blank check to the American people. When we stop taking care of the ones that defend our freedom we lose the part of us that makes us Americans. Bowes parents watched him leave for military service with the belief that one way or another he would come home someday. We need to keep that promise to them. Because like I said at the beginning WHAT IF IT WERE YOUR SON…?

Bergdahl, of Hailey, Idaho, as last seen in a video released in December 2013, footage seen as “proof of life” demanded by the U.S.

America’s Gun Culture The media and gun control advocates often talk about the US “gun culture,” as if those of us who own and appreciate guns are some sort of deviant cult. The reality is, America’s gun culture is part of the dominant American culture; it’s the hoplophobes, with their irrational fear of firearms, who are out of sync with religious people, but they don’t see them as abnormal or with the social norms of most of the country. harmful. Typically the atheist’s or agnostic’s only conflict comes when America’s gun culture is as normal and mainstream as its belief others’ religious beliefs encroach on their own liberties. in God. Naturally, there may not be quite as many people going to Attitudes toward guns follow a similar path. Many members of the church or the range as in days “gun culture” are enthusiasts, hunters, target shooters, competitors, past, but God and guns are still Hoplophobia – a “mental etc., whose lifestyle revolves around their passion for firearms part of everyday America, aberration consisting of an unreasoning terror and the shooting sports. Others own and enjoy firearms, but are and are deeply ingrained of gadgetry, specifically, not passionate about the subject, and still others don’t own guns in our heritage. Those who firearms.” Coined and have no interest in them – or might not even be personally retch in fear and disgust at the by writer Jeff Cooper comfortable with them – but they respect and support our right thought of a gun – who preach in 1962. “The most to have them. But both the “God culture” and the “gun culture” are disarmament as a religion – are common manifestation of part of mainstream American culture. hoplophobia is the idea like the activist atheists who demand that every trace of God be removed from schools and all other aspects of public life.

that instruments possess a will of their own, apart from that of their user.”

In contrast, there is a small, but vocal cult of non-believers who aggressively preach atheism as a religion. They claim to be intellectually enlightened and superior to religious people whom they regard as superstitious and backwards. They take deep offense at any mention or recognition of God – particularly in any sort of public setting. They point to historical examples of abuse of religion and use those examples as proof that religion is bad – ignoring all of the good that also springs from that same well.

Polls and personal experience tell us that the vast majority of Americans believe in God. Some are more active in their faith and some are less faithful in their acts, but most at least believe in something, even if they just call it spirituality. The majority of those who doubt the existence of God – or even those who are sure that He doesn’t exist – still respect, appreciate, and accept others’ belief These “enlightened” few have been effective at perpetuating a in God as normal and good. They might not understand or agree belief among many that the Constitution demands that God not

be invoked, recognized, or in any way acknowledged bypublic officials or with public funds. This is a demonstrably false notion. The founders were, by and large, Godly men, many of whom had deep religious convictions. They routinely called upon God’s grace and guidance to protect and direct our nation, and they clearly saw value in the moral teachings of the Bible. Nonetheless, they also had seen the danger of a state-sponsored religion – the English Civil Wars were comparatively recent history and religion was a central issue. To protect the United States against religious tyranny, they set out a simple rule in the Constitution: that Congress could pass no law regarding the establishment of an official religion. The objective was to protect individual liberty, not to require that the federal government make a religion of atheism. This restriction was so limited that it only bound Congress, not the legislatures of the several states. Similarly, there is a relatively small group of individuals who concentrate on the costs of the right to arms, but ignore – and even actively deny – the benefits side of the equation. They preach government monopoly on force and citizen disarmament. Like the atheists who admit their eventual objective is the destruction of religion, but who push and tear and pick at anything they can find in their efforts to kill God with the death of a thousand cuts, the anti-rights zealots chip and whittle away at firearms rights trying to make gun ownership more difficult, more expensive, and less socially acceptable. The atheists and the hoplophobes are the minority culture. They’re the extremists. They’re the ones tearing down the American culture and trying to replace it with their myopic, utopian vision of a Godless paradise where all are peaceful because they have no Gods to fight over, no guns to fight with, and with an all-powerful government to take care of the people. The term “gun culture” is used as a pejorative along with terms like “gun nuts” and “rightwing Christians” in an effort to marginalize and discredit anyone who can be categorized as part of these groups. Unfortunately, the tactic is effective, especially as it is consistently employed by major media, repeating lies, omitting facts, and generally misleading the public. For now, at least in most of the country, the “gun culture” and Christianity remain part of the core fabric of our nation’s dominant culture. But that will change if we don’t fight back against this culture of fear and government power that only tears down and never builds up. We are mainstream America. We are the culture upon which this nation was built and through which it has thrived. We are still the dominant culture in most places in the US, but that will only remain true if we continue to cling to our bibles and our guns and fight back against the growing culture of destruction that has infested our nation like a cancer. We are America. Our ancestors left Europe to get away from such tyranny. We must not let it subvert our liberty. ©2014 The Firearms Coalition, all rights reserved. it’s a matter of pride Recently I had the honor of welcoming home one of our MC Club Brothers from Afghanistan. I’m ashamed to say this is the first time in my life that I participated in a Military Homecoming fresh off the busses. It was truly awe inspiring. Many of us have seen it on social media or in videos on the internet. I can now tell you first hand the computer does it no justice. To see the raw emotions in the actions and faces of the soldiers returning home, and the families was incredible. The children, I can’t even write it justice, you just need to go see it. Probably most of you feel as I felt, if I didn’t know anyone personally returning from service, I really don’t belong at their homecoming. Nothing could be further from the truth. When our club rolled in to the crowd at this particular High school, of course we got the usual stares, wandering eyes and whispers in the body of citizens that were gathered to receive their loved ones. But you know there were other MC Patches there with Military Affiliations. I approached one of those patch holders and introduced myself. We chatted a bit and as it turned out he knows one of

our Chapter Bosses from riding. I asked him who he was there to receive, and he said. “The Soldiers”. He had in fact ridden out in the bitter cold and rains that day not to greet one, but to greet them all. That’s Awesome. Well we greeted our Brother, and many hugs and handshakes were exchanged within our group, as well as several pictures taken. But do you know what else happened? Other soldiers who had greeted their families began to ask if they could have their pictures taken with our club as well. Total strangers bonded in the celebrations of Freedom. Wow. It was incredible, and I have never been so honored. So it got me thinking about the connections of the MC Community and the Military. I made a phone call to a Great Brother I know who rides in The Leathernecks MC Ohio, JCP Chapter and asked him if I could come and pick their brain about their club. If you are not familiar, The Leathernecks MC exists out of a desire to honor the Brotherhood and Memory of the United Stated Marine Corp and Fleet Marine Force Navy Corpsman. These brothers fly a Three Piece Patch with an MC Cube. They are the

real deal, as you would expect out of the tradition of the United States Marine Corp. The “JCP” Chapter is named after United States Marine Lance Corporal Joe C. Paul, U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient who valiantly gave his life in Vietnam defending wounded soldiers in battle so they could be evacuated. (www.cmohs.org). We gathered at an American Legion Post on a Saturday afternoon, shared a few brews and we chatted. What a great group of Veterans and Bikers these guys are. Oh I’ve met many of them before, and they have attended our club parties, but this is the first time I had the honor of just sitting, laughing, and sharing stories, and a message. The message that these are many of the Soldiers under which their sacrifices have paved the way for the Freedoms we enjoy. They do so many charitable activities to honor of their Brotherhood of Veterans. Some of the recipients of their charity have been The Wounded Warrior Project (www.WoundedWarriorProject. Org), The Marine Corps Family Support Community, the Chillicothe Veterans Home and the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Facility (www.Columbus.VA.Gov). But their charitable contributions are not limited to large organizations as it was explained to me. There was Veteran who suffered serious burns and a loss of his home in a fire, and the Leathernecks MC were right there to help. Plus they escort the remains of soldiers who have passed that maybe had no living relatives, escort living Veterans to DC as well as participate in guarding the Vietnam Traveling Wall. They also meet returning WWII veterans that have participated in Honor Flight and support the Honor Flight annual reunion and fundraiser. These guys keep busy. But what is the connection to the MC life you might ask?

Donation Passengers.

It’s pretty obvious to those of us who understand the bond of Brotherhood, even if you’ve never had the honor of serving your country in the military. It’s about feelings like “the normal rules of friendship don’t apply”, because clubs are Brotherhoods, not just friendships. It’s the same feeling of love and connection that it has been explained to me as in being with your units, in combat or otherwise. It’s Family. So if you should find yourself wanting to take a road trip, may I make a couple of suggestions? On Saturday April 5th 2014 and Saturday October 4th 2014 the Leathernecks Ohio JCP chapter will be holding their annual Charity Spaghetti Dinners 3-8pm at the American Legion Post 430, 3227 East Livingston Ave. Columbus Ohio 43227. Adults $10 Donation Children $5 Donation. Or their 5th Annual Poker Run Saturday June 21st starting at the Outback Steakhouse 6000 East Main St. Reynoldsburg Oh. Last Bike out at 1pm. $15 Donation Rider, $10

If you can get out and support these Brothers, please do. If you are unable to make the trip depending on where you’re reading this, please take some time this year to support our Veterans. The personal sacrifices that our soldiers have taken on voluntarily or otherwise throughout American History should be honored and respected. It is how this country was formed, and it is how it has stayed the “Land of the Free, and the Home of The Brave”, and for most of them, aging or otherwise, it’s the least we can do to support them, it’s a matter of pride! Thanks For Reading.. God Bless our Soldiers! Tabasco Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Tabasco.TRO@gmail.com

But there are limits. Your company can’t use tats or piercings as an excuse Many employers have a cookie cutter mentality of how their workers should to fire you. clean look and want to let their coffee — rather than the worker’s appearance—do the talking. If you don’t like the Starbucks policy, you might try serving coffee at a smaller, local coffeehouse. The times they are a’ changing While some employers cringe at bodywork and piercings, others are embracing it. If you choose a position where you don’t interact with clients, or are pursuing an artistic career, you’re more likely not to have a problem at work. Here is the official policy of some employers at the time of this writing: • The nation’s largest retailer, Walmart, doesn’t allow facial piercings (i.e. eyebrow, nose or lip). They do allow tattoos that aren’t offensive; ‘offensive’ tattoos must be covered up. • Borders, one of the nation’s largest book sellers, views body art and piercings as something that makes a worker more interesting and a definite plus. • Ford Motor Company allows everyone from Senior Executives on down to have tattoos and piercings. The only exception is that factory workers are asked to refrain from piercings that could endanger factory settings and/or worker safety. • Wahoo’s, a California-based chain of fish taco restaurants, allows their employees to strut their tattoos in the restaurants and in the corporate office (specifically graphic designers, and even the owner). If you have tattoos and piercings how should you handle it at work? Walking into work (or an interview) with a giant dragon on your arm probably isn’t a good idea. Modest tats (ones that can be covered up with your pants or a shirt sleeve and/or are small in size) are probably okay. You can take out some of your earrings if you have multiple piercings and/or a nose or eyebrow ring. Or, go for studs instead of large hoops. The piercing through the septum (the one that looks like a bull ring) and large earplugs aren’t usually well received. Large tats (especially ones on your neck or arms) and tongue piercings seem to concern employers the most. Many tattoo establishments and artists now have consultations with the customers before tattooing them. They ask them to really think about the ramifications of having a tattoo on the neck and other areas that are exposed. Many younger people don’t think about the consequences or the permanence of tattoos. Better to go with a tattoo on the upper arm that could be covered up by a short-sleeved shirt if necessary. Another good idea is camouflage. Cover your tats with concealer or band-aids. Women can wear bangles or other large bracelets to cover tats on their wrists and still be quite stylish. You can choose to wear long sleeved shirts or long pants and women can wear thick tights and/or strappy heels to conceal tats on their legs and ankles. Some piercings can’t be left without jewelry all day long. You can use retainer jewelry, which are just clear pieces of plastic to keep your piercings open, or wear clear or flesh-colored plastic balls on your tongue ring. Another option is to go small; choose a very small silver ball for a nose ring, so it will be a little less conspicuous. The Vault.com survey revealed that 70 percent of the people with tattoos whom they surveyed concealed them at work, while 30 percent didn’t. A good gauge might be to look around your office (or come into the office to look around before your interview) and see if others are wearing their piercings and not concealing their tats. If there is nothing in your employee manual, you can remove and cover up until you’re sure. Many states are at-will employment and have initial 90-day trial periods, so if you really like your job you must weight the importance of your body art and piercings against continued employment. A Word from the Writer You may wonder what makes me know so much about this subject. Sure, I did research, but I have also indulged in body art. For the first time in over 10 years, I have been asked to cover up my tats and remove my nose ring. I received a phone call from Human Resources before I even started my current position to let me know that I had already broken the dress code with my nose ring (I covered up the tats on my multiple interviews there). Although I have a creative position in an agency and have worked at much more conservative places than this (and have been allowed to ‘be myself’), I have to abide by the rules. Why? Because this is one full-time job that I definitely want to keep. Reprinted with Permission from Working World.

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

SO SIMPLE SPAGHETTI CARBONARA

OLD SKOOL VINEGAR PIE

1 Pound of Quality Spaghetti (don’t ever cheap out on primary ingredients)

2 Cups of Cool Water

1 Stick of Real Butter OR Quality Margarine such as

2 Cups Sugar

“I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” 1 Pound of Applewood/Thick Sliced Bacon, Cooked Crisp & Rough Chopped in Medium Size Pieces. If you’re not an authentic bacon lover, you can get away with just half a pound. Not me though. lol 2 Tbs. of Minced Garlic (you can buy a jarful already minced in Deli/Produce area) 4 Large Eggs put out till reaches room temperature 1 Cup of Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese, plus more for garnish topping (I’d tell you that you could use the shaker kind but you really can’t. Just buy a block of it and use your cheese grater or, ask them to grate an entire pound for you at the Deli counter. They’ll gladly do it for you. Salt & Pepper to taste, however..... Salt the water for the Spaghetti heavily as it’s the only time you get to flavor the spaghetti internally. Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a full boil After you’ve cooked up your bacon nice and crisp, (pour off most of the bacon grease into a container if you’re cooking a pound of bacon) saute’ up the minced garlic after cooking up 2nd round of bacon. Use a very large and high skillet as you’re going to be adding the cooked pasta to it. Some people just use their spaghetti pot and add all the ingredients to it as it’s already so high. I do this, but others prefer the all-in-1 skillet method. You’ll find your own groove. In a separate bowl, whisk up the 4 eggs and 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Add a good amount of fresh cracked black pepper. If mix is too tight, loosen it with some of the pasta water. When the minced garlic is just golden (never overcook) add the bacon back in and stir with a wooden spoon to incorporate well together. Remove from heat and stir in the egg & cheese mixture until creamy. Quickly add the drained spaghetti. Add 2 Tbls. of butter or margarine. If need be, add more pasta water to loosen if seems dry. It must be wet, loose & creamy. Fold out onto a large serving pasta platter and garnish with parsley and more Parmesan cheese. Serve with hot, crusty, lemon-butter bread. Delicioso!

1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour 2 Eggs; beaten & frothy 6 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar 2 tsps. Limoncello (lemon flavored liqueur ORlemon extract (It’s better w/ Limoncello, although in “the day”, lemon extract was always used. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a store bought pie shell. Bake as per directions & cool completely. In heavy 2-qt. saucepan, bring water to a full boil. In small bowl, combine flour and sugar, tossing with a fork to blend. Add the flour mix to boiling water and cook, whisking often, until thickened, about 7 minutes. Remove from heat and slowly add the eggs, whisking vigorously. Return to medium-low heat and cook, whisking until velvety smooth; about 3 minutes. Add the vinegar and Limoncello and whisk just to blend. Pour into the cooled pastry shell and refrigerate until set; 3 hours and never sooner. I think alot of people don’t try this pie because of the name but damn....it is so good with lemon ice-cream. Great...now I’m toally jonsing for it. EASTER LOVIN’ PISTACHIO WHOOPI PIES 1 Box of Cocoa Chocolate Cake Mix (If can’t find, just get regular Milk Chocolate mix and add 1 Cup of Real Cocoa Mix mixed with 1/2 cup sugar) Blend all ingredients as per pkg. directions. Lay out 2 large cookie sheets with baking parchment paper or non-stick mats. Take a small ice-cream or sherbet ball scoop that is approximate to the size of 2 Tablespoons and scoop into balls. Place balls all over both cookie pans. Leave 2-1/2 inches for balls to spread out Take a rubber spatula and just press slightly so that all balls will bake down 1/2 inch thick. Bake 12 mins. so they’re cracked on the surface. Cool 1 min. then transfer to a rack to cool thoroughly. Put Pistachio ice-cream in refrigerator to soften up for about 20 minutes. Scoop 1/2 cup of ice-cream on each Whoopi and cover with another & squish slightly to form a sandwich. Freeze for no less than 2 hours before serving. These Rock!

JOKER’S WILD Biker Trade A biker arrived at his friends house to get ready for the big run that weekend. His thoughts were on the run as he walked up to the porch, he couldn’t help but notice the huge dog sitting next to the door. When asked, “is that your dog?” the biker responded, “Yea, I got him for the ol lady”. “No joke. I always kept my mouth shut bout your ol lady but, I gotta say, nice trade” _________________________________________________________ Respectful Biker Two bikers are pulled up at a stop sign. One looks up and sees a funeral procession starting by. He pulls the bike to the side of the road, gets off, stands by its side, takes off his helmet, and bows his head. The procession passes by the intersection and the biker puts on his helmet, gets back on the bike, and starts it up. The other biker comes over and says, “That was touching. I didn’t know you had it in you.” The first biker responds, “Well, I guess it was the right thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 40 years.” _________________________________________________________ Biker in the Theater The biker lay sprawled across three entire seats in the posh Amarillo theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this he whispered to the biker, “Sorry, sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.”

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

The biker groaned but didn’t budge. The usher became more impatient. “Sir, if you don’t get up from there, I’m going to have to call the manager. The biker just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle. In a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the biker, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police. The cop surveyed the situation briefly then asked, “All right buddy, what’s you’re name?” “Sam,” the biker moaned. “Where ya from, Sam?” With pain in his voice Sam replied.... “The balcony up there.” _________________________________________________________ Cowboy and a Biker on Death Row A cowboy and a biker are on death row, and are to be executed on the same day. The day comes, and they are brought to the gas chamber. The warden asks the cowboy if he has a last request, to which the cowboy replies, “Ah shore do, wardn. Ah’d be mighty grateful if’n yoo’d play ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ fur me bahfore ah hafta go.” “Sure enough, cowboy, we can do that,” says the warden. He turns to the biker, “And you, biker, what’s your last request?” He responded with, “Please kill me first.”
