I thought that I’d take a moment and let you know a little about Thunder Roads Ohio - and who exactly we are. Thunder Roads Ohio is part of the Thunder Roads Magazine Network - the world’s largest network of motorcycle magazines. Currently there are 23 separate editions of Thunder Roads Magazine published each month - each covering a specific region of the country. The edition you’re holding is Thunder Roads Ohio - and obviously focuses on the State of Ohio. Each edition is independently owned and operated by local owners living and riding in the area which they cover. While there are certainly guidelines regarding the brand - each Publisher is able to craft their magazine as they see fit. Here in Ohio, we have sought to include a broad range of interests relating to riders. In terms of motorcycles themselves we seek to cover just about everything! From modern cruisers to vintage racers, if it’s on two (three and sometimes even four) wheels we cover it. Beyond the motorcycles - we also cover a broad range of areas that we consider to be of interest to riders in our state. We cover custom paint, tattoos, recipes, and even animal shelters! As Publisher, I believe in the support of our 2nd Amendment and thus we cover topics relating to the proper and safe handling of firearms as well. This has proven to be a very popular area amongst our readers - so we have expanded to include a regular feature from one of the leading organizations in our state regarding this topic. Likewise, we have recently begun working with Competition Riders of America (racecra.org) to expand our Motocross Ohio segment. This is one of the premier racing organization in the nation and we are proud have them as partners as we cover motocross, flat track racing, and other areas of interest to competitive riders. Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is just one segment of the Thunder Roads Network - and works hand in hand with other publishers across the nation. This issue features several articles from other states - including Michigan, Maryland, Tennessee, and Delaware. TRO is able to draw from the experience and resources of the network to produce what we consider to be one of the finest regional motorcycle magazine to be found anywhere. Even though the Thunder Roads network publishes hundreds of thousands of magazines every month - over 300,000 monthly on average, Thunder Roads Ohio remains a local effort driven by a grass roots organization with representative throughout the state. We are a family business - not a big corporate enterprise. As a matter of fact, most of this issue was put together with my son sitting on my lap. I believe that we offer the best of both worlds. The strength and resources of a national network - spearheaded by local riders from throughout Ohio. The end result is Ohio’s #1 motorcycle magazine - requested by more people then any other. And both my son and I appreciate that support. Thank you, Derek Smith Publisher - Thunder Roads Ohio

As told by

The Iron Cowboy Shows, Rallies, and Bike Nights - Oh my! I’m writing this just after getting home from the I-X Center and the Piston Powered Auto-Rama Show there. It was a great show with so much to see, but admittedly I’m glad it’s over. Now we can focus on the RIDING EVENTS. This year the Piston Power Show pretty much marks the end of the winter show season, as we transition to the rallies and summer events. I was able to cheat a little, though, and sneak down to Daytona for Bike Week a week earlier. That got the juices flowing and I’m itching for riding season. This promises to be a great summer with a seemingly endless list of rallies, rides, and bike nights to attend. It’s a tough job - but someone has to do it! And yes - that someone could be you as well! As we head into summer, we are still looking to add extra members to the team. If you have a passion for riding - we most likely have a spot for you! Whether its covering rides, contributing stories, shooting pictures, or simply dropping off magazines - we have a spot for you! We also have spots for Road Reps in certain parts of the state.

I had a chance to catch up with Arlen Ness while in Daytona.

give you the promotions stuff and such - and you really just have to drop them off. And then you send us a list of the places that you go and the contact people there. (Usually you can just get the manager’s card.) Then we follow up, etc.. If you’re servicing the account you get a percentage on the sales there. (servicing = dropping off mag’s, etc.)

Thunder Roads welcomes “Ride Reviews” (profiling events, rides, and rallies) and stories regarding suggested riding destinations in If any of this sounds of interest to you - shoot us an email at particular. Many of our feature articles are written by freelance ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com writers, and we’re always looking for solid writers. In most cases, we do not assign articles and contributors must be self-starters. S&S Celebrates it’s 55th If you have an idea for an article or feature for Thunder Roads Anniversary and Offers Ohio, send us a summary of your story along with several photos. Succinctly outline your subject and proposed article - and explain Exciting New Training Options! why our readers would be interested. We are ALWAYS looking for quality, original photographs, and for photographers interested in shooting photos as assigned. Even if you’re just an enthusiast or consider photography just a hobby - it’s always exciting to see your work published. The Road Rep position handles distribution and assists in representing the magazine within a designated area. The Rep works with the Marketing / Sales Manager to coordinate coverage within their area. The way it usually works - you drop off the magazines and leave the advertising information. We

S&S Cycle of La Crosse, Wisconsin was founded by George Smith Sr and Stanley Stankos in 1958. Based upon their experience on drag strips around Chicago, S&S started off with just some quality pushrods and developed into the King of V-Twin Performance. Today, S&S supplies everything from air cleaners, carburetors, exhaust systems, lifters, pistons, to complete engines and major driveline parts. One of the things that set S&S apart from many of their competitors is their racing heritage. You name the motorcycle-racing genre, and S&S has done it. It makes no difference whether you’re talking the drag strip or Bonneville, these folks have been there: testing, racing, setting records, but more importantly constantly improving their products. S&S® Cycle utilizes PowerSport Institute, a division of Ohio Technical College, to conduct its dealer certification program. Skilled PSI instructors train technicians in the installation and tuning of S&S high performance engine kits, and the repair of S&S high performance motorcycle engines and fuel delivery systems.

Always great running into an Ohio crew when you’re miles away. Andy and the guys from Porky’s! Look for more on this bike in an upcoming issue. 6

2013 marks S&S’s 55th Anniversary and they have decided to focus on training as part of their celebration efforts and is offering two core certification programs at a special discounted rate. PSI’s S&S Certification program

centers around two basic programs - the Sidewinder Center and the S&S VFI Center. The Sidewinder Center is an in-depth four day course that covers servicing and rebuilding all S&S engine families and engine kits. The S&S Variable Fuel Injection (VFI) Center is a four day course designed teach technicians how to better understand and identify fuel injection components and become proficient

using the S&S ProTune II to calibrate engines. Working with PSI, S&S is offering these programs at a specially discounted rate of $800 each. Class size is limited to a maximum of six students. With this favorable student/teacher ratio, there is more shop time for more “hands-on” opportunity, including troubleshooting techniques and key diagnostic procedures. These courses will serve S&S dealer technicians from around the world who want to expand their knowledge of servicing S&S high performance products. NICK LENATSCH ON GRAVEL by Brenda Fox, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys

R

iding in gravel has to be at the top of the list when I go thru the requests I receive of riding techniques riders would like to improve on. I don’t care if you’re riding a big Harley Bagger or a lighter weight performance street bike, gravel and motorcycles will never be an ideal combination. Hence preparing yourself in advance for when the pebbles hit the road is something that can keep you upright and serve all motorcyclists well. Nick Ienatsh is the ride coach that has never let me down (pardon the pun). He’s the best at what he does, teaching people to become the best motorcyclist they can be. Here’s the advice, Nick shared with me.

Gravel Road!! Relax… Relax…easy to say. And in fact, saying “relax” out loud is a terrific habit to adopt in this sport, especially when traversing a gravel road on a streetbased motorcycle. Here’s why: As the front tire gets pushed around by the gravel, tight arms on the handlebars will often be a “cycle” of movement behind what the steering system is trying to do. Those tight arms often make the movement of the handlebars worse, and the tighter we hold, the more the bike wallows and wobbles and complains and misbehaves. The front tire needs to be able to move freely as it encounters the loose surface and the rider must let it move. Whisper out loud, “relax”, and start with soft hands on the handlebars and loosen those arm muscles. Let the front tire track and find its way through the loose stuff, and hold on enough to support the bike…and keep the throttle open. Yep, try to keep the bike on-throttle, gently driving through the gravel, the weight transferred back to the rear tire. If you must close the throttle and apply the brakes, do so early and easily. Sneak open the throttle, sneak closed the throttle. It’s the initial openings and closings that get people in trouble so do your best to eliminate the grabs and jabs. That’s good advice for riding on any surface, so practice it on every ride. Right about now you’re saying, “I hate dirt roads, thank God I never ride on them.” Oh yeah? How about next Sunday’s ride that is interrupted by road construction and detoured onto two miles of dirt frontage road? How about going to visit your in-laws and finding a half-mile gravel driveway? How about the dirt parking lot at the campground?

Relax… Let’s add a couple minor techniques that will make dirt-road-riding easy. Use your upper body to help the bike steer with less lean angle, hanging off the bike like a Roadracer. Keep your eyes way out front and scanning so you will be smoother with your inputs. Learn to look beside the huge boulder, not at the huge boulder. Master both brakes so you can slow your bike with balanced, light braking. Ride in the right or left car wheeltrack to avoid the thickest gravel. If you’re approaching an apparently deep section of gravel, accelerate through it. Don’t be shy about putting your feet down during u-turns or slow going. How about a final technique that might sound a little goofy? Try this: Next Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

time you encounter a gravel road, gently push and pull your bars, moving each hand no more than an inch or two, intentionally steering the front tire right and left in a fairly-quick cadence for a few yards. If you try this right away, it gives you a feel for the grip and gets you in the habit of allowing the front tire and handlebars to move slightly. Oh yeah…and relax.” — Nick Ienatsch Yamaha Champions Riding School, Fastersafer.com, Author of Sport Riding Techniques You never know when the evils of gravel are going to cross you path. Nick shared some great tips that I hope you will spend some time practicing what he mentions. Good skills do a motorcyclist good. Ride ON! Brenda Fox Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys

A Talk with David Uhl And A Look at His Amazing Work 10

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

hen I first got to the Timonium Bike Show, I did what every self-respecting biker does I went looking for bikes and babes. I don’t really remember seeing David Uhl’s large booth right there in the middle of it all. I passed by a couple of times and never really paid much attention to it. I’ve always stayed away from most art things, because to be honest I am the worst artist of all time. I’m sure you all know someone like me, the guy that can’t even draw stick people. I guess I’ve always been jealous of people that could draw or paint so effortlessly. I didn’t realize just how jealous I was about to be. On one of my trips around the show I looked into his booth and the next thing I knew I was standing in front of one of the pictures. I couldn’t believe how great these paintings were. The more I looked around I really liked what I was seeing, and it didn’t take long to see that I wasn’t the only one. The booth was full of bikers young and old, male and female. The paintings were just amazing. I knew I had to talk to David Uhl if I could get the chance. As I watched him finishing a new painting, I decided to asked if he would mind talking with me and sharing his story with Thunder Roads Magazine MDDE-DC. He accepted the offer, and after talking with him I gained a great respect for him and had to share his works with our readers. David started painting motorcycles in 1998. Before that he was an international illustrator. He did ball point pen drawings as a style that became really popular. He did everything from Apple computers,

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

IBM, Newsweek, and Time. He also did all the Brookstone ads and worked with Fed Ex for six years. In 1998 he decided he didn’t want to illustrate any longer and wanted to try his hand at painting. When we talked about the paintings, I asked about the reception he’s gotten from the biker community. He summed it up in one word “Incredible”. He always figured he would get a good response because of the subject of his paintings. He paints mainly antique motorcycles like pan heads, knuckles, and flat heads. It’s all the things bikers love and a recipe for success. I also usually have a cute girl or woman painted with respect and class. He finds women like the paintings as much as the men do because of that. If you happen to go to a show and find out David is there displaying and selling his art, find something you like and buy it early. He tells me he sells out at most of the shows. So if you were thinking about getting a Uhl painting, don’t be hesitant to pull the trigger or you may just miss the chance to own one of these amazing works of art.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

His studios are located in Golden Colorado. David usually does attend Daytona Bike week, Sturgis, and he also goes to the Arizona Bike shows. He came to the East Coast because he was invited to the New York bike show. So he decided to do Timonium and then onto Indiana before going to Daytona. Which worked out good for us and we got a chance to see his work up close. For the next year and a half he’s going to do some painting of the history of wine making. He said it was going to be “some pretty serious art”. He also said he would keep doing the motorcycle paintings during this time. Which I was glad to hear. Thunder Roads is going to feature David’s work in upcoming monthly editions as it becomes available. Tell us what you think and we will pass it on to David. In the meantime if you’re interested in obtaining some great motorcycle art for your collection you can go to www. uhlstudios.com or contact Greg Rhodes at 303-913-4840. Be sure to tell them that Thunder Roads MD-DE-DC sent you. 11

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

APRIL 2013

The last week of February we learned that H.B 35 had been introduced and proposed that fund 8460 be transferred to 7036 and 8460 would be abolished. Fund 8460 is the money from $6 in extra registration fees all Ohio motorcyclists pay to go towards Motorcycle Ohio. Fund 7036 is a multi-use fund. There were two attempts in the past 6 years to divert these funds for other uses. In 2006 an attempt was made to move $750,000. In 2009 an attempt was made to move $800,000. We opposed H. B. 35 transferring the money from a single use fund to a multi-use fund to protect from further attempts being made to divert the funds to something other than for what they were intended. Written testimony was provided by ABATE of Ohio Inc. Safety & Education Director Mike Stock, ABATE of Ohio Inc. NCOM Representative Haskel Combs, ABATE of Ohio Inc. Executive Director Ed Schetter, and ABATE of Ohio Inc. member Gary Sellars. Oral testimony was provided by me, ABATE of Ohio Inc. Government Relations Director Scott Wood, ABATE of Ohio Inc. Chairman of the Board Jim Elgin, and AMA Government Relations Director Imre Szauter. A Call to Action was put out by both AMA and ABATE of Ohio Inc. The calls to action were published in e-mails, web pages, and Facebook. On February 28, 2013 a substitute bill was accepted for H. B. 35 by the House Finance and Appropriations Committee. The language concerning 8460 was eliminated. A job WELL DONE by all! Thank you to all who provided testimony, distributed e-mails and liked or shared a Facebook post. Thank you to everyone who made the calls or sent e-mails to our legislators concerning this matter. This is an example of what the motorcycling community can do when we work together. The effort of the members made me proud to be an officer of such a fine organization. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.

The Diner

walked into the small diner and was seated in a booth toward the back. I peeled off my riding jacket and loosened my boots; it felt so good to be unbundled. I laid my gear in a nearby chair then settled in for a light meal and a much needed brake.

A glance at the faded Budweiser clock read 2:17 P.M. I had pulled away from my hotel that morning at 6:35 A.M. which meant I had been on the road a little over seven and half hours with approximately four more hours of saddle time ahead of me. Just then a leather skinned waitress approached my booth and removed a pencil from the knot of her graying hair; “What will it be sweetie?” she asked. “I’ll bet you say that to all the guys!” I said playfully, choosing the chicken noodle soup and some water. I checked my phone for messages then leaned back against the wall and closed my eyes. As my mind began to relax among the rhythm of the clanging dishes and local conversations, images of this morning’s ride passed before my eyes as if I was in my neighborhood cinema. The lushness of the mountain scenery, the trees dressed in autumn’s finest colors, the rich red and brown tones of the soil. I remembered the herd of ten to twelve deer feeding nervously in the freshly gleaned cornfield, and the coolness of the morning air as I passed through the shadows of the whispering pines. I was startled out of my deep trance by the raspy voice of the waitress; “Enjoy your meal sweetie! Want some crackers? She asked, as she sat the bowl on the coffee stained placemat and refilled my water glass. I love to eat in small diners like this when I’m riding; it’s like being transported back in time as most of them haven’t experienced any kind of changes since Kennedy was President, but you can bet that the food will be cheap, taste great, and you will get the true flavor of the people who call this community home. I would have loved to have tried the apple pie, but daylight was burning and I had two hundred more miles to go. I grabbed my gear, settled the bill, and then headed out of town. It’s the small pleasures like eating in this diner that make motorcycle traveling so rewarding and just one of the many reasons I am always looking forward to the next adventure. Keep the rubber side down, Rick

Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month!

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder RoadsÂŽ Magazine OHIO

The Way it Works Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

• ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

BONUS Check-in’s!

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop Prizes

Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a BiketoberfestÒ Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO

• Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long.

• Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting stops, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and even the opportunity to win a motorcycle!

®

• Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s.

The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside

winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.

the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

Just Get Out and RIDE!

One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool 20

We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these

community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. Changes From 2012 We’ve had changes in ownership and management since last summer’s run, so we feel obligated to make some big changes in the contest as well! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is built upon the same fundamental idea as last year’s - TO GET OUT AND RIDE! - but, we’ve made some key changes in the program. o We are no longer tracking points - which seemed to confuse many people. It’s all based upon check-ins. o All prizes are awarded based upon check-in’s. The more check-in’s the greater chance to win cool prizes! o Bonus “Check-In’s” are still awarded for spending over $10 at a stop, but we are no longer giving a $100 bonus. Some people felt that this allowed riders to “buy” their way to victory. o Prize Winners are listed every month in the magazine, online, and in our eNewsletters. Winners will have 45 days to contact Thunder Roads Ohio to collect their prize. o There is no longer a distance bonus, but the more you ride - the more chances you have of winning. Some prizes are restricted only to those riders checking in at a particular location. For instance, we may be awarding a $500 Gift Certificate to riders checking in at a particular dealership. Only riders making the trip to that particular dealership have a chance of winning. For the chance at winning $500 - it might be worth taking the ride to that dealership, especially if it’s a great ride!

DAYTONA BIKE WEEK Thunder Roads Ohio hits The World’s Largest Motorcycle Event Flagler counties that host the majority of the events.

By The Iron Cowboy, Thunder Roads Ohio While there may be many “bike weeks” coast to coast, including our own Ohio Bike Week - there is truly only one that comes to mind without any clarification. BIKE WEEK - heralds the end of winter and draws sunshine starved bikers from throughout the midwest and northern states to the Daytona Beach Florida for the “World’s Largest Motorcycle Event.” In fact, Bike Week has grown to such legendary status that it draws riders and awestruck fans from around world to join in the revelry. Daytona Bike Week has trademarked itself as the “World’s Largest Motorcycle Event” - based upon their estimate of at least 500,000 bikers attending the 10 day event. The rally consumes Daytona Beach, the neighboring communities, and hundreds of miles of highway surrounding the region. For more then a week - Bike Week doubles the population of Volusia and

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

The Daytona rally can trace its roots back to the Daytona 200 Race - which was held on January 24, 1937. This first race was ran on a 3.2 mile beach and pavement course. It was won by Ed Kretz from California riding an Indian Motorcycle. Kretz won with an average speed of 73.34 mph over the course of the race. The annual race continued on, taking a brief break for World War II from 42’ to 47’. Then in 1947 the official race resumed under the direction of “Big Bill” France, the cofounder of NASCAR. France’s family business, now known as International Speedway Corporation, still promotes the 200 and Bike Week races at the Daytona International Speedway. These include the extremely popular Daytona Supercross that draws competitors from across the country.

The Daytona Bike Week has grown over the years - often enjoying a boost from Spring Breakers which has often overlapped the “biker holiday”. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Bike Week swelled from 100,000 annual attendees to well over 400,000 in a matter of years. Then in 1994 the official estimate hit 500,000 and that figure has stuck. The only other event in the motorcycle world that comes close is the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally - which claims anywhere from 500,000 to 600,000 annually. The Sturgis Rally is centered around its namesake town in South Dakota which has an estimated average population of about 6,600 people year round. The “slight” jump to a half million people for the rally is far more dramatic of a change then what Daytona experiences - but attendees are really spread all over a multi-state region for the Sturgis. While Daytona may seem like a large area - it seems downright packed compared to the SturgisDeadwood-Devil’s Tower region that hosts the Sturgis Rally. While Daytona boasts of its “Largest Motorcycle Event” title - I believe that another accolade deserves more attention. While Sturgis may compete in terms of numbers, no other rally can possibly compare to Daytona in terms of the wide range of riders it caters to. Both in terms of riding interests and background, no other rally offers as much to such a broad spectrum of enthusiasts. From metric riders to vintage racers, from motocross to v-twin enthusiasts, from cross country touring seniors to hard core chop style builders - Daytona offers something for everyone. Just looking over the “Official Rally Schedule” reinforces this. Several distinct areas have developed for Bike Week attendees over the years. There is the Speedway, Main Street, North US 1, Destination Daytona, Beach Street, and then a few larger destination venues such as The Cabbage Patch. A rider could spend several days at virtually any of these spots and have a great time without ever getting bored. And each area offers a distinct range of offerings. For a rider not interested in drinking or partying - there are an endless array of options. If you’re looking for a wild week - there certainly are plenty of choices there as well! The Speedway, referring to the lots surrounding the Daytona International Speedway, not only caters to the racing enthusiasts - it also hosts most of the major manufacturers and their displays. Riders can test ride the newest bikes from virtually every major manufacturer right there at the track. Harley-Davidson, Victory, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Can-Am, and Kawasaki all had major displays and fleets of demo bikes. All you had to do is sign the necessary waivers, show proof of an endorsement, and don a helmet - and off you went. Riders of all backgrounds and interests will feel right at home at the Speedway. Major vendors such as J&P, Kuryakyn, Mustang Seats, and countless others offer circus tent sized displays of vast offerings. The emphasis here is on the bikes and gear - not necessarily the party. Main Street is the major party spot with thousands descending on the relatively tight strip of shops and bars. From mid-morning til 1am, the party roared all ten days. Bikini clad bartenders and exotic bikes competed for attention from thousands of partiers working the corridor all day and all night. Landmarks such as the Boot Hill Saloon anchor the strip while the big dogs - Full Moon, Main Street Station, and Froggy’s compete in the center. Each trying to outdo the others in terms of entertainment and hot bartenders. North US 1 could be considered a Rally unto itself as many of the anchors there offer a festival like atmosphere spanning acres of space. The roughly mile long stretch of US 1 hosts more then a half dozen bars along the Volusia - Flagler County line and is one of the busiest spots throughout Bike Week. 26

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

In the 1970’s, Smiley’s Tavern was a lone stop for bikers along the stretch - but they catered to the riders with an annual pig roast and laid back atmosphere. Word spread and the bikers flocked to the area. Many other popular watering holes soon joined Smiley’s - including The World Famous Iron Horse Saloon which would seem the top draw today. with top notch entertainment and its unique atmosphere. Across the street the Broken Spoke and Boot Hill complete the powerhouse trifecta, while the newly launched Beaver Bar jumped into the fray this year. Each of these locations offered a full schedule of events and entertainment, complimented by vendors and craziness! Johnny Lange had his Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse camped at the Boot Hill compound while ‘JackSh@#” and Ron Harris from the Chopping Block held court at the Broken Spoke. Of course with all the craziness, there are bound to be some unfortunate stories and this year was no exception. One crazed partier actually tried to bite the finger off the Daytona Beach Chief of Police and the very hotel that the Thunder Roads Ohio crew stayed at had a fire that looked far worse then it actually was. (Despite reports of people jumping off balconies - it was really only a minor fire that started in a storage room.) Admittedly, my own personal highlight of Bike Week was catching a guy trying to steal my phone! Don’t get the wrong impression, though. Just like any of the major rallies - Daytona Bike Week is a fun event with hundreds of thousands of BIKERS partying! And despite what those outside might think - that’s not a recipe for trouble. Even with all the entertainment and fun things to do - the major draw at Daytona Bike Week is the other people attending. Hundreds of thousands of riders from all across the globe come to Daytona to hang out with other riders with similar interests. There is a sense of instant camaraderie with riders from all across the globe. Almost every morning I met new brothers over breakfast and ran into old friends all over the place. I rode, hung, and partied with riders from Sweden, Russia, Germany, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Michigan while in Daytona this year. Oh, and of course I met a lot of folks from Ohio. I spent most of the week wearing one of our Thunder Roads Ohio - Ohio Biker Shirts, and it drew shouts everywhere I went. People would call out “OHIO” everywhere as they spotted the back of my shirt. (And for clarification - I did not wear the same shirt all week. I packed quite a few for the trip.) I met countless new Ohio Riders as we toured the rally stops and even picked up a few new shops for the TRO Network while 16 hours from home! With all these Brothers and Sisters around, how could you not feel comfortable? In fact, when I caught the aforementioned fellow trying to steal my phone - I instantly had a half dozen random folks jump up to assist. When you consider the fact that more then a half million bikers came to town to party and have fun - it’s amazing that there aren’t more problems. Well, not when you understand the nature of our culture. But based purely on the numbers alone - you would expect more issues. Consistently, though, the real Biker Code comes through as we look to have fun and enjoy life - treating others as we wish to be treated, with the same respect we expect in return. As I said, that is the true appeal of these rallies for me. It’s a great feeling to meet a fellow rider from the other side of the world - say Russia for instance, and instantly make the connection. Despite all the craziness we see on the news everyday, it is comforting continued... Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

to know that there are still some fundamental truths to the world. Riders from Russia, South Africa, and Norway - all have the same kindred spirit that allows us to connect instantly with bikers at the corner bar minutes from home. Whether it’s the Crazy Fox in Bucyrus chatting with a guy from Upper Sandusky or trading shots with a BMW rider from Stuttgard at the Full Moon Saloon in Daytona - we as bikers have a connection. And that’s pretty cool if you ask me.

560-LB TOTAL LOAD CAPACITY

The Victory® Freedom® 106/6 V-Twin is a 106-cu. in. powerplant that pumps out 106 ft-lb of arm-straightening, street-churning torque. It’s a counter-balanced, fuel-injected engine that delivers impressive performance for riders who like to lead, not follow.

The Cross Country is ready and rated for 2-up riding with any cargo needed for a crosstown run or overnight trip. It has the power, cargo space, comfortable seating and adjustable air shock rear suspension so one or two riders enjoy the best in cruising.

6-SPEED TRANSMISSION WITH OVERDRIVE

21-GALLON STORAGE

A Cross Country rider enjoys smooth shifting and the best cruising on the open road in 6th gear, which is a true overdrive. Helical-cut gears ensure that each shift is smooth and easy, and neutral assist makes it easy to slip into neutral at stops.

Roomy, convenient, weatherproof and lockable. The Cross Country saddlebags set high new standards for carrying riders’ essential gear. Cross Country saddlebag lids can be opened easily with one hand, they latch securely, have weatherproof seals and are lockable.

ABS BRAKES In all conditions, the Victory Anti-Lock Brake System on the Cross Country provides riders with peace of mind. When traction is compromised, it immediately and automatically provides reliable braking to help a rider stop quickly and under control.

CRUISE CONTROL Out on the open road, go ahead and activate the cruise control for an easy, relaxed ride. This automotive-qualify cruise control is easy to activate and set, and it reliably maintains the desired speed. To de-activate it, simply press “Off” or engage the clutch lever or either brake.

1.1 TRAVEL 4.7 INCHES OF REAR SUSPENSION Sometimes the open road gets a little rough, so it’s great to have the 4.7” of smooth travel provided by the Cross Country rear suspension. The air shock is easily adjusted using a hand pump so the suspension delivers a consistently smooth ride for one or two riders, with or without cargo on board

OPTIONAL LOCK & RIDE® TRUNK Put the color-matched Lock & Ride® Trunk at the top of your accessories list. CROSS COUNTRY ZACH NESS CROSS COUNTRY The motorcycle that breakthrough custom builder Zach Ness built and rode to Sturgis last year is now available as a limited-edition bagger. The Zach Ness Victory Cross Country bagger motorcycle features the smooth style and daring attitude Zach brings to the streets, with custom paint and graphics, Ness accessories and the pumpin’ audio system Zach demands. EACH BIKE NUMBERED & SIGNED This exclusive, limited-edition model has a numbered metal badge on the case that includes graphics of the Zach Ness logo and signature.

BLACKED-OUT ENGINE/EXHAUST/TRIM Zach gave the bike’s trim an understated, blacked-out finish to put the focus on the custom paint and graphics. Blacked-out features such as the engine, exhaust and saddlebag trim look great on this bike.

CUSTOM NESS FORGED HIGHWAY BARS When Zach Ness styles a bike, nothing stays stock, including the forged highway bars, which he has given a special styling treatment that coordinates with the bike’s complete customization.

KICKER® PREMIUM SPEAKERS Take the party on the road. Premium KICKER® speakers in the fairing pump out wickedly good audio. Plus, the audio system volume control increases the volume as bike speed increases, and vice versa.

FREEDOM® 106/6 DRIVETRAIN The ideal complement to this bike’s incredible Zach Ness style is genuine Victory performance. The smooth and powerful 106-cubic inch Freedom® V-Twin serves up 106 ft-lb of torque, and the 6-speed transmission has true overdrive for the smoothest highway cruising.

ZACH NESS CUSTOM SUEDE PAINT The stylish Titanium Metallic paint is what Zach had on his personal Cross Country last summer. Add the unique graphics Zach designed and the striking paint scheme coordinates perfectly with the bike’s custom treatment.

BLACKED-OUT NESS HANDLEBARS The Ness custom handlebars enhance the driver experience by creating a comfortable, in-control riding position. Handlebars are a focal point of a bike, and these blacked-out bars look great in Zach’s custom scheme. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

2012 Was a RECORD YEAR for the Annual

Blessing of the Bikes in Daytona (Hoping for EVEN MORE in 2013)

L

ast year’s “BLESSING OF THE BIKES” was held on May 20, 2012. The Dayton 73 Moose Riders, in conjunction with the Crystal Lakes 2464 Moose Riders, hosted the 12th annual “Blessing of the Bikes”. The weather was perfect and the day was started about 6:00 AM with workers coming in to help set up for the event. The stage needed to be set, the vendors put into place and the band starting up getting ready for the arrival of bikes.

A bike show was conducted by “Z Performance” had 34 entries with winners in six different categories. Also this year, a special show was performed by the Columbus “Stunters”. And the local Shriners’ Bobbies displayed their mini bikes and patty wagon. We offered, as usual, commemorative tee shirts, pins, patches, and other Blessing items for purchase. The “Blessing of the Bikes” blesses the Riders and passengers for a safe riding season, while at the same time, is raising funds for two of our local charities: A Special Wish Foundation and the GREENEBUCS local chapter of AMBUCS. We raised over $5000.00 for these worthy causes, bringing us to a very substantial donation throughout the past twelve years.

This event is held on the 3rd Sunday of May each year at the Dayton School Systems (Welcome Stadium) largest parking lot. There are between 40 and 50 Moose Riders, and 22 separate subcommittees that help plan, organize and carry out this successful event. This year we set many new records. The unofficial count of the bikes is 7528. A record of 44 vendors helped feed and sell motorcycle parts and associated items to all our guests. We had a flyover by a smoke generating bi-plane. And in the past, we have had fly over and static displays by the local hospital’s care flight unit. Another first this year was a wedding performed before the actual Blessing by Pastor Brian Smith. In a nondenominational ceremony, Father Dale, our honored priest, and 13 deacons individually walk through the parked bikes to bless each and every bike and their riders, often stopping to pray with riders for their special request. 36

Over the years, we have helped at least 6 other organizations and churches throughout the country establish their own Blessing, including the one at Mooseheart. Bikers come from all over the tri state area, and this is considered the largest motorcycle event in Southwestern Ohio. Long considered the largest single Moose event in the State of Ohio. We now believe it is the single largest event in the Moose Fraternity. —Richard Stewart, Chairman, Blessing of the Bikes Committee (Ohio)

TOASTED BACON & EGGS OVER EASY “SAMICH” 7 Strips of Hickory Smoked Bacon 2 Slices of Potato Bread; lightly toasted 2 Eggs; Cooked Over-Easy in bacon drippings 1 Slice of White American Cheese (*optional) Good slather of real mayo; not cheap stuff. Substitute Miracle Whip if that’s your preference. Lightly toast your potato bread, spread a thin amount of mayo on bottom piece of toast, then lay your bacon strips down vertically and if too long, just break off extra and place in middle of “samich”, next, add your over-easy eggs on top of bacon and poke them so the yolks break and all that creamy yolk is released. Add your cheese on top of eggs. Sprinkle a bit of parsley over entire “samich”, spread a good amount of mayo on top piece of toast and yum-yum it up. This is one of my top 4 “samiches” and I’ve been making it for myself since I was 6 years old (but back then used Wonder bread); Potato bread is so much thicker and really toasts up crunchy for texture. GOOD OLE’ HOME-MADE REUBEN “SAMICH” 2 Slices of Marbled Rye Bread 1 1/4 lb. of Deli Pastrami; sliced thin 1 1/4 lb. of Deli Corn Beef; sliced thin 1 Tbls. of Spicy Deli Mustard 2 Slices of Quality Swiss Cheese 1 Good Slather of Quality Thousand Island Dressing Get a cast iron skillet good and hot on medium heat. Use “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” margarine and spread both pieces of your Marble Rye bread generously and get up into the corners too. Take one piece in your hand and with fingers spread wide, hold bread with butter side down but on the top part spread Thousand Island dressing generously. While holding the bread, pile a good amount of pastrami on bread, then cover with a piece of Swiss Cheese then pile a good amount of Corn Beef on top of cheese, the 2nd piece of Swiss Cheese on top of that and then a really hefty slather of Thousand Island dressing all over top. Place top on sandwich and butter the top of generously and also throw a good size pat of margarine in the pan to melt down. When bottom of pan is well coated; gently glide your sandwich off your fingers and into skillet. Do not touch it or move it! It will only take apprx. 2 minutes to brown up crunchy, take a spatula and lift to make sure good and brown. Flip it and brown the other side. Serve up with a big long pickle spear and some chips. This also is one of my top 4 “samiches”.

HOME-MADE PHILLY-STYLE STEAK & CHEESE I rarely make these at home as they’re quite costly my way as my home-made version is made with Filet Mignon. So, we standardly go to Jersey Mike’s. 2 Hoagie Style Rolls; fresh from Deli 2 Filet Mignon Steaks 1 & 1/2 Cups of Shredded Parmesan Cheese (or any cheese of your preference. It’s your “samich”. 1 Ripe, Homegrown Tomato 2 Handfuls of Shredded Lettuce 1 Vidalia Onion; chopped and saute’ 1 Red, Green or Yellow Pepper, chopped & saute’ Or......all 3….go for it! Throw in some sliced mushrooms also Grill your steaks. Those stovetop grill skillets are great for this. Or use your indoor grill machine, whichever you prefer. Let cool 10 minutes when done cooking for juices to draw back into meat. Meanwhile, slather margarine on both sides of both Hoagie rolls. Cover them up well. Place under broiler and really keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. Next, in your pre-heated medium high skillet, add your peppers, onions and mushrooms to saute’ up well. Salt & pepper to taste. Cut your Filet Mignon up into thin strips, but then chop the meat to a rough chop. After your saute’ mixture is smelling phenomenal, put in your steak chunks and add a few splashes of Worcestershire Sauce and mix well. Now, add your cheese and let it melt all down into skillet mixture. Cut down the center and take a spatula and take mixture over to crunchy, broiled buns. Arrange it where entire bottom of bun is covered up with the veggies and meat and melted cheese. Spread your shredded lettuce over top, then lay down 3 slices of rich, red, homegrown tomatoes on top of lettuce and salt & pepper them (add garlic powder also if want), slather top generously with mayo or your fave topping and bite baby bite. This is Heaven on a Hoagie roll. PEANUT BUTTER & MARSHMALLOW “SAMICH” 2 Slices of soft Wonder Bread or Blue Bunny Bread Bottom slice, generously spread with JIFF peanut butter. On top of the Jiff, spread really generously with Marshmallow Creme. Place the top over the bottom and seriously, you have to eat this with an ice-cold glass of whole milk. It is my comfort food “samich” of all times and I started making these for myself when I was 3 years old. And the best part..... totally simple. So there ya’ go; my 4 favorite “samiches” thruout my whole life. What’s yours? E-mail me your recipe. Keep Your Face In The Sweet Pie Of Life!

2013 Harley-Davidson® Heritage Softail Classic

he Heritage Softail is clearly a favorite here for the Thunder Roads Team with our own Iron Cowboy riding one for more years then he will ever admit. So it was with some pleasure that we turned our focus on this classic mainstay in the Harley-Davidson lineup. While most think of the Electra Glide and Road Glide as Harley’s touring bikes - it is the Heritage that really embodies the essence of a classic touring motorcycle. With its smooth performance, comfortable riding position, low seat height, ample luggage space, wind protection and passenger accommodations, the Heritage Softail® Classic is a true customtouring bike. Few bikes capture the spirit of the original dressers more authentically than this beautiful motorcycle. 1940s-style leather saddlebags with quick-detach buckles, full FL front fender, chrome laced wheels and hub cover all pay homage to the past, while the counter-balanced Twin Cam 96™ engine, hidden rear suspension and new optional Anti-lock Braking System all reside at the forefront of modern technology. The 2013 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic features an attractive custom style. We especially like the old school saddlebags, the fluid fenders with chrome highlights or the imposing chromed headlamp. Not to mention about the wheels, the optional 110th Anniversary gas tank medallion, or the hidden rear shocks which further enhance the vintage look of the motorcycle. As far as comfort goes you get a detachable windshield, tall handlebar, full-length rider footboards, convertible two-piece seat and engine idle temperature management strategy. The 2013 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic is powered by a 1,585 cc, air-cooled, twin cam 96B engine which cranks out 117 Nm of torque at 2750 rpm. The engine is married with a six-speed cruise drive transmission which provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway. The 2013 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic motorcycle FLSTC is fully equipped with modern touring capabilities and even has a removable motorcycle windshield. For 2013, the FLSTC Heritage Softal Classic comes in an extremely limited, serialized 110th Anniversary Special Edition, featuring exclusive commemorative anniversary styling elements and premium features that make it a top-of-the-line model and a true work of living art, with finely forged finishes that age and transform in a manner unique to each vehicle. The Harley Heritage Softail Classic features a powerful air-cooled Big V-Twin Cam Harley engine, providing performance power. Enjoy mile after mile with a large capacity 5 gallon Softail fuel tank. The H-D Softail tank is also dripping with authentic Harley-Davidson style. The Harley FLSTC has full length rider footboards with rubber vibration isolation for added comfort. Another of the many great features of this classic motorcycle is the detachable motorcycle windshield. You can remove the Harley Heritage Softail windshield for a new look. 50

Styling and Design Notes from Harley Nostalgic Custom Style Do laced wheels, whitewalls and studded leather add to the way a bike feels on the road? Of course they do. It’s these extras that make the Heritage Softail® Classic model the quintessential boulevard cruiser. As rallies were gaining grassroots traction in the ’40s, you’d roll into Daytona Bike Week expecting new stories and new styles. There was really something going on, and it’s still alive and well in this bike. Take the saddlebags, studded with style straight from that golden era, with hidden quick-detach buckles. Or the fenders—full and fluid, with chrome highlights and matching paint. Or that big, commanding 7-inch ball headlamp, chromed and classy. And let’s talk wheels. You can go with the standard steel-laced wheels on blackwalls with a chrome hub. Or turn the clock all the way back with the optional chrome laces and wide whitewalls. For the ultimate touch of style, the 110th Anniversary Edition teams the whitewalls with Smooth wheels, cast of premium aluminum and polished to a shimmering, glass-smooth finish. Hidden Rear Shocks If you want a comfortable bike but love that rigid-suspension look, youve come to the right bike. Weve kept all the modern comforts where they belongbelow the surface of a rad, vintage-looking bike. You get the classic lines of a vintage hardtail frame with the horizontal rear shocks hidden in the guts. Its a signature rigid look, and youll only find it on a Softail model. Rigid-mounted and air-cooled, the 1584cc Twin Cam 96B engine provides increased power, smooth performance and a maintenancefree built-in primary auto chain tensioner. Its a jewel machined out of metal. Pure. Dripping with power. From the classic edge of the cooling fins to the clean lines of cases and coversthe Twin Cam 96B engine makes an ironclad statement to holding on to whats right and staying true to what satisfies the rider. Fire up the air-cooled, rigid-mounted Twin Cam 96B counterbalanced engine and feel the low-end torque unleashed for a smooth ride. Thanks to the lightweight piston design, delivery of the added power is more refined than ever. Then put your foot on the shifter and feel how the engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive transmission were designed to work together. Six speeds. A strong driveline and strong internal parts. Low routine maintenance. And a low cruising rpm couldnt feel better. Six-Speed Cruise Drive You want a ride that rumblesnot begs for mercywhen you lean on it a little. The Six-Speed Cruise Drive transmission provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway, so you get a better match between engine turnover and road speed. Its a rare ride when a bike responds like this, and a low growl goes a long way when youre opening up the road ahead.

vets corner Do you have a service-connected disability and need a vehicle modified to operate it?

Read the following to see if the VA can help you. For more info from the VA see http://www.prosthetics.va.gov/ AAE.asp

Can a Veteran Receive Financial Assistance From VA to Purchase an Automobile?

David McCallister

Yes. Financial assistance, in the form of a grant, is available to purchase a new or used automobile (or other conveyance) to accommodate a veteran or service member with certain disabilities that resulted from an injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service. The grant may also be paid, if disabilities are a result of medical treatment, examination, vocational rehabilitation, or compensated work therapy provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The grant is paid directly to the seller of the automobile for the total price (up to $18,900) of the automobile. The veteran or service member may only receive the automobile grant once in his/her lifetime.

How Can I Apply for an Automobile and/or Special Adaptive Equipment Grant? You can apply for the automobile and/or the special adaptive equipment grant by completing VA Form 21-4502, Application for Automobile or Other Conveyance and Adaptive Equipment and submitting it to your local VA regional office. The instructions on the VA Form 21-4502 contain a list of adaptive equipment that has been pre-approved for particular disabilities.

What Disabilities Must You Have to Qualify for the Automobile Grant? A veteran or service member must have one of the following disabilities to qualify for the automobile grant: • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands, or • permanent impairment of vision in both eyes to a certain degree

Does VA Pay to Adapt a Vehicle? Yes. Those qualified for the automobile grant, and veterans or service members with ankylosis (immobility of the joint) of one or both knees or hips resulting from an injury or disease incurred or aggravated by active military service may also qualify for the adaptive equipment grant. Adaptive equipment includes, but is not limited to, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, and special equipment necessary to assist the eligible person into and out of the vehicle. Contact should be made with your local VA medical center’s Prosthetic Department prior to purchasing any equipment. The adaptive equipment grant may be paid more than once, and it may be paid to either the seller or the veteran.

Note: After you complete and submit Section I of the application, the VA will complete Section II and return the original to you. You are responsible for obtaining the invoice from the seller, updating Section III, and submitting the form to your local VA regional office for payment. If you are entitled to adaptive equipment only (i.e., service connected for ankylosis of knees or hips) you should complete VA Form 10-1394, Application for Adaptive Equipment – Motor Vehicle and submit it to your local VA medical center. Additionally, VA Form 10-1394 should be completed for approval of equipment not specified on the VA Form 214502. David McCallister “Possum” Retired AF MSgt computer tech. I

Force Me? Force You!

start off this months segment with some good news! First, Di Feinstein’s ‘Assault Weapon Ban’ is roadkill and most of the anti-gun legislative proposals in the US Senate have a very difficult road to success. It is imperative that you call/write/ petition Senators Brown and Portman to express your displeasure if they actively deny you your CIVIL RIGHT of the 2nd Amendment. The argument against gun-control needs to be framed in the language of the civil rights movement, because it is our civil right! For example: ‘You don’t need an AR-15 holding a 30-round magazine’ can be met with ‘Rosa Parks didn’t need to sit in the front seat’. Rosa Parks civil rights were being denied because the government was telling her the back seat was good enough. Our current elected officials are denying us our civil rights by telling us what firearms are good enough instead of ‘We the people’ making that choice. Gun-control in America has its birthplace in the racist, KKK supported, Jim Crowe laws of the post-war South. The klan didn’t want freemen shooting back! Its as simple as that. In today’s America the grandmother in Chicago who is raising her grandchildren is unable to keep and bear arms for her protection/defense, and therefore, is actively being denied her civil rights. Gun-control is a civil rights issue. We are turning the argument and upsetting the apple cart.

ammo in which to practice with. The reasons for this are legion but the end result is the same; Good people don’t have sufficient boom-booms in which to punch holes on paper and to keep the skills frosty. One of the best ways to hone your tactical edge, at an economical price, is to spend time doing Force-onForce training (FOF).

By the time you read this Buckeye Firearms will have put our first class of armed teachers through the 3-day Active-killer class at Tactical Defense Institute. Couple that with the 450 teachers and administrators who came to hear Lt. Col Dave Grossman speak at a BFA sponsored seminar on defensive mindset, numerous Ohio schools sanctioning CCW by their teachers and you begin to see how the world is turning! It is critical that you show up at school board meetings to support the armed teacher initiative. Please sign up for the BFA newsletter from our website. With your entered information we can email you when teachers in your area will be in front of their school boards requesting to carry on campus and you can show up and support teachers defending kids. When the community gets involved, the boards, being elected officials, take notice!

FOF training puts you into a defensive scenario against reallife role playing bad guys using gas-operated, airsoft guns. Yes the bad guys have them too and if your hit, it hurts. On so many levels this training is invaluable. First, you must employ and operate your firearm with the same marksmanship skills you normally take to the range. The difference is that your adrenaline levels spike up exponentially due to the fact that you are in shoot, or no shoot, situation against another ‘living breathing’. Its amazing how marksmanship skills take a dump when you add a little anxiety of people shooting back! Second, you must employee problem solving skills to enhance your survivability: Utilizing cover, concealment, diversion, surprise. Third, if you fail to negotiate the first and second points I stated you will get an ouchie reminding you of your incorrect choices, but this is good! Better to be shot and learn from your mistakes than being shot in real life. Keep in mind that FOF is similar to paintball in that you are required to wear a protective facemask, but keep this in mind. The thinner the clothes, the more pain you will feel.

Now for something completely different! Many of you, like myself, are having an extremely difficult time finding any kind of

Many advance level firearm schools integrate FOF segments into their gun classes because it is such a critical form

of learning. In recent years business have sprung up that specifically cater to FOF scenarios training and many of them are within driving distance of central Ohio. The closest is Shoot Extreme in West Chester, Ohio near Cincinnatti. These guys use ‘simunitions’ which are Airsoft guns allow safe similar to airsoft but actually and effective training through Force on Force have a projectile that is filled (FOF) programs. with paint. Training options range from home defense to active-killer. Another highly rated FOF school is Mindset Labs in Indianapolis, IN. These guys have an industrial warehouse in which to set up a myriad of scenarios! Classes range from Close Quarter to low-light/flashlight engagements to car based operations. I’m sure they could be talked into doing a motorcycle based situation if the price is right! In summary, just because most of us can’t afford to put a lot of rounds downrange does not mean we can’t get some good training repetitions. interesting summer

I

t’s interesting how things change. I guess somewhere someone said once that the only thing constant in life is change. I’ve seen many changes in the past decade in my life. Many were positive changes, some not so much so. With regards to my club life, my changes have been good for me. I continue to learn new things every day, and share what I have learned with my brothers. Honor, Respect, and Brotherhood. Too bad all don’t get it. Nothing more disappointing than someone you called a Brother turning out otherwise. Well, it happens. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, there are many politics with regards to the Motorcycle Club lifestyle. What patches are welcome where. Who ranks where in the hierarchy of patch wearers as perceived by the MC community, etc. Typically there are areas claimed by specific patch holders, especially when it comes to the One Percenter lifestyle. But that’s not to say that there aren’t many others who claim their “territory” as well. Actually, I find the science behind it all pretty interesting. It is odd a bit how things have changed over past several decades. When I was born in the sixties, my Old Mans club ran with all of the big clubs, and a few of the smaller ones. I guess it was a different time. There wasn’t much animosity based on club colors. In fact many of the same clubs who today despise each other’s patch based on the history of the clubs, all rode and partied together back in the day. It seems that life was simpler back then. Dad always said that back then the common enemy was law enforcement and citizens. But much has happened over the past four or five decades.

If you’ve followed the history, and can believe a portion of what’s been reported, then you know why things have changed. It would appear that in the MC political struggle for power, some have paid for their allegiance with their lives. And depending on whose side you’re on, there is always someone else to carry that blame. Makes me think about how it parallels other long withstanding feuds. Like the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s. It’s a shame really. I’ve met so many clubbers from all sides of the fence, and they really are individually very similar. It seems that every club has a “Wild Bill”, a “Cowboy” and a “Scoot”. Ours does too. I haven’t run across any other “Tabasco’s” yet. Of course I don’t travel the southwest

64

very often, so you never know. Our club exists in an area with some very long standing predominant clubs. Like forty plus years of occupancy. We see them as our friends and kindred souls. Recently some other long standing clubs have begun moving into the area. Clubs that have never existed in this area before and also new ones are popping up all the time. I prefer to selfishly exist for our own benefit, and not anyone else’s agenda. I think to coexist is important. I mean if clubs run the same areas, you are bound to cross paths. I know some believe that anyone not wearing their patch is an immediate enemy. I enjoy stopping out to other clubs parties and meeting new people. But even when we do so, I more enjoy heading back to our clubhouse and partying with my own Brothers. To me that’s what it’s all about. I know the politics thought. I’ve known them my entire life. I don’t usually roll in with our club into a major city without a call ahead to give a heads up. Hell, in fact we typically like to roll in and throw back a few with the local club if I have a contact. It’s fun. I have friends in clubs from all over, and it good to get out and visit sometimes. Most are cool. If someone’s an ass, they’re an ass. It really doesn’t matter what patch they wear, or if they wear any patch at all. Like every Biker I look forward to Spring, and hitting the open road with my crew. I can’t wait for the summer parties, festivals, and swap meets. A ride to the lake, or through the hills. But with all the new clubs popping up and old ones moving in, one thing is certain, it’s going to be an interesting summer.

T

he Queen City Mods & Rockers Rally is returning to Cincinnati May 31st - June 2nd. It will be the second year for this event, after a very successful launch in 2012. The Cincinnati Cafe Racer club hosted the inaugural scooter and motorcycle rally, which featured a large group ride and festivities at several locations around the Cincinnati area. The ride highlights included a mass ferry crossing of the Ohio River and winding country roads that ended Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, a favorite destination for motorcycle, scooter and car enthusiasts. While this event is modeled after similar events that have taken off in other midwestern cities - the QCMAR is unique with its focus on a long group ride. The terms “Mods & Rockers” refers to British youth from the 1960’s who clashed many times. Gangs of mods and rockers fighting in 1964 sparked a moral panic about British youths, and the two groups were seen as folk devils. The rockers adopted a macho biker gang image, wearing clothes such as black leather jackets. The mods adopted a pose of scooter-driving sophistication, wearing suits and other cleancut outfits. By late 1966, the two subcultures had faded until a revival in the mid 80’s, however the angst of their parents rivals have faded to amicable fun rivalries. This year’s event is also co-hosted by the Mighty Ohio scooter club and includes a Friday night meetup & registration at MainStay Rock Bar downtown with an urban ride showing off the city landmarks and hill top views, 4 live bands, vendors, food, raffles and of course lots of gawking at each others rides. Saturday morning is a breakfast and coffee at Fuel Coffee shop which caters to car and motorcycle enthusiasts. The group ride is open to all riding levels and incorporates multiple ride captains and guides. The ride launches from Fuel Coffee with a route going up river to Augusta Kentucky and then returning along the opposite side of the river to the new Triumph motorcycle dealership where the mid day rally and bike show are held. This includes vendors, raffles, DJs spinning 70

Saturday evening the fun continues with a Saturday Mods & Rockers “Throwdown” at Mixx Ultra Lounge in the hip and trendy “Over The Rhine” neighborhood of downtown with four live bands and hundreds of motorcycles and scooters lining the streets and nearby lots. There will be raffles, a pin-up girl contest held by Retrocentric studio, three floors of music, a patio, a sushi bar and some big fun. An auctioneer will also auction off artwork, moto related items, and some custom designed helmets by local artists. This year the Cincinnati Cafe Racer club has come together as a loose knit group of volunteers to build a custom cafe racer motorcycle from a Honda CB750 that will have some very unique features. That bike will be raffled off Saturday night at Mixx with tickets available at $5 each. Code named “Project Barbarossa” in reference to Cincinnati’s rich brewery heritage, this bike can be seen on their web site at http://cincinnaticaferacer.com/bike-build/ . If you are still able to drag yourself out of bed on the third day, Sunday morning, there is a survivors breakfast at Joes Diner in the “Over The Rhine” neighborhood which is an old 50’s style diner in the center of downtown. The survivors will have a final informal ride afterwards to complete the weekend of rally fun. The rally benefits the Change Of Heart support group which caters to the needs of heart transplant recipients in the region. The charity provides education, resources, and financial assistance

to those waiting for transplants and those who are living with a transplanted heart. Take a moment and ensure you have filled out your organ donor card on your license. This year’s rally is twice as big in many respects to last year’s event. The organizers learned a lot with the 2012 event and have a lot more volunteers and committees to help make the event successful. Many more sponsors and vendors have signed on this year to help make it fun and the rally continues to seek out new sponsors. There are twice as many bands are playing this three day event over last year. A pin up and boudoir photography studio, Retrocentric, has partnered with the rally to run the pin up girl contest. This female owned business will help elevate the contest and bring a higher level of fun and flirtyness to the Saturday events. “We had more people show up last year than we expected and everyone seemed to have a great time.” says Tim Burke of the Cincinnati Cafe Racer club. “The group ride was a big hit and we decided to continue to focus on providing a long and scenic ride with a fun mid point rest break in Augusta KY. We want to ensure people come away with a good experience and are talking about it for years to come. Our mission is to build community amount the two wheel enthusiasts in the region and this rally is one way we help bring people together. You’ll make new friends and find new riding buddies.” For more information and to register for the rally, visit: http:// queencitymodsandrockers.com/

elcome back to the Paint Shop. With it being the end of the winter show season, we decided to put together a gallery of some of the best custom painted bikes that Thunder Roads has come across over the past few months.

One of the advantages of attending shows all over the country is the opportunity to see great artwork as well as meet some of the artists that create these masterpieces. One question that I get more than any other is “what do you think makes a great paintjob?” The easiest answer is whatever I think is cool. But that’s just my opinion and lets face it, everyone has their own opinion and to them they are right. No argument here.

Now if we get into it a bit, leaving personnel opinions on the sideline, there are quite a few criteria that you can apply to determine the quality of a paintjob. Of course, that does not completely eliminate the “opinion factor” but it does give a consistent number of factors to consider. For example, when judging the last Ultimatebrushoff competition, there were 3 judges involved. We all have our own likes and dislikes pertaining to artwork be it concerning subject matter, color choices or the object that was painted. But using the criteria that the UBO has developed, after going through 52 applicants, we all had the three winners in our individual top 6. 76

One of the criteria that we consider is composition or layout. Does the piece flow from one part to another? Does the imagery look as though it is a part of the piece or does it look like stickers with no blending into the background? Is it balanced throughout the painting? Another thing to look at is consistency. While there is one part that is killer, the rest of the image looks almost unfinished. Is the quality of the painting consistent throughout the entire piece? How about originality? While people say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, the difficulty of painting something that doesn’t exist except in your own mind is very high. There is no blueprint to follow or reference to check except for what you have created on your own. Possibly the most important thing to consider is craftsmanship or skill in a painting. Look closely at a painting. Are the lines and shadows smooth, blending into one another with no noticeable breaks? Does the image look foggy or out of focus as your concentrate closely on small portions of the piece?

Pat Downey (aka TABG, The Air Brush Guy) is the Custom Paint Instructor at the PowerSport Institute in North Randall, Ohio; and has been painting for over 25 years. His work is nationally recognized and he serves as a Judge for the Ultimate Brush Off. Some of his work can be seen at www. theairbrushguys.com

These are a few things that you can look for when viewing all the amazing custom paintings that are out there. Then again, you can just like what you think is cool. Keep the paint flying! TABG theairbrushguy

John was sitting outside his local pub one day, enjoying a quiet pint and generally feeling good about himself, when a nun suddenly appears at his table and starts decrying the evils of drink. “You should be ashamed of yourself young man! Drinking is a Sin! Alcohol is the blood of the devil!”

A serious drunk walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly. He immediately apologized and explained, “I’m sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her.”

Now John gets pretty annoyed about this, and goes on the offensive.

“Why you worthless, insufferable, wretched, no good drunk!” she screamed.

“How do you know this, Sister?”

“Funny,” he muttered, “you even sound exactly like her.”

“My Mother Superior told me so.” “But have you ever had a drink yourself? How can you be sure that what you are saying is right?” “Don’t be ridiculous--of course I have never taken alcohol myself” “Then let me buy you a drink - if you still believe afterwards that it is evil I will give up drink for life” “How could I, a Nun, sit outside this public house drinking?!” “I’ll get the barman to put it in a teacup for you, then no one will ever know.” The Nun reluctantly agrees, so John goes inside to the bar. “Another pint for me, and a triple vodka on the rocks”, then he lowers his voice and says to the barman “and could you put the vodka in a teacup?”

Two guys were in a bar, and they were both watching the television when the news came on. It showed a guy on a bridge who was about to jump, obviously suicidal. “I’ll bet you $10 he’ll jump,” said the first guy. “Bet you $10 he won’t,” said the second guy. Then, the guy on the television closed his eyes and threw himself off the bridge. The second guy hands the first guy the money. “I can’t take your money,” said the first guy. “I cheated you. The same story was on the five o’clock news.” “No, no. Take it,” said the second guy. “I saw the five o’clock news too. I just didn’t think the guy was dumb enough to jump again!”

“Oh no! It’s not that Nun again is it?”
