We are proud to present a magazine that we proudly declare to be “Ohio’s #1 Motorcycle Magazine”. We say this not to simply ‘thump our chests’ but as a mission statement and commitment to our readers. Thunder Roads Ohio is committed to always delivering a quality magazine serving the Ohio riding community. Even though we distribute our magazines freely through advertisers and distribution points across Ohio, we aim to deliver a quality product every month. We seek to entertain and inform, creating a magazine that people enjoy reading. We strive to be a resource for riders of all types - from the most hardcore American V-Twin riders to vintage restorers. From metric racers to long distance touring couples - we want to include them all. It’s a wide range of interests, but they all are bound by a common passion - the love of the road and sense of freedom that only a motorcycle can deliver. I enjoy a sense of achievement as we grow each month. Our magazine continues to swell through the support of more and more sponsors companies that believe in us and what we represent. Thunder Roads Ohio is one of the largest magazines of its type in the entire country - possibly the largest full color, free motorcycle magazine anywhere. Our sponsors and advertisers have allowed us to deliver a magazine of this size and quality, printed on heavy glossy stock - and we are grateful. Even more so, we appreciate the support and commitment of the Ohio motorcycle community. Our subscription base swells every month as more and more readers opt to simply have our magazines sent to their homes, shops, and offices. We offer this as a convenience, basically charging only enough to cover our costs (for more information, visit us online ThunderRoadsOhio.com). Thousands more dedicated readers stop by their local shops, restaurants, and dealerships to pick up their Thunder Roads Ohio every month. It’s this devotion and support that prompts the support of our advertisers - and thus the growth of the magazine. And so the cycle goes. When does it stop? Who knows. This spring we break ground on several new initiatives including Thunder Roads TV, the Thunder Roads App (now available on iPhones, Droid, and Blackberry), and a bigger and better Thunder Run! We are recruiting more and more Road Reps and Contributors to the team in order to help maintain and develop this grassroots driven organization. And of course we continue to grow by seeking more opportunities to work with those in the community - both in and out of the motorcycle community. Initiatives such as our Thunder Paws series (highlighting animal shelters and rescues) allows us to help support other positive organizations within our communities. Despite all of this - we remain a small company driven by a passion for the open road and the sense of camaraderie we find on it. We don’t have a huge staff or even a single person on salary. We are a grass-roots driven, family business - but we have lofty goals. We are “Ohio’s #1 Motorcycle Magazine” and we thank you all for that. However, we feel that the journey has just begun. There are so many new and exciting opportunities for all of us - it’s really pretty exciting. So, while I hope you enjoy this issue - I feel comfortable saying... You haven’t seen anything yet!

Planning an Event for 2013? Some of our most popular and most requested articles have been those relating to “How to Host A Motorcycle Event”. For those of you wondering when to expect the next article wonder no more! In March we will present the next installment as we consider “Planning Ahead”. Even more exciting, though, is the fact that we will soon be offering EVENT PLANNING SEMINARS for free to those involved in a riding organization or motorcycle oriented business.
One of my biggest annoyances - second only to being charged for water at drive-thru’s or cover charges for local bands - is the extinction of free air hoses at gas stations. While that once was a basic given at virtually every station, it’s certainly a rarity these days. While station owners bemoan the cost of replacing hoses and maintain the compressors, I’m really not that sympathetic while we are paying ever increasing rates and the gas companies post higher and higher profits. So, imagine my surprise when I came across the first of Giant Eagle’s NEW Free Air Stations. I know that they have been around for a bit, but they seem to finally be spreading across Ohio. I think that it’s worth recognizing that Giant Eagle (grocery / supermarkets) has bucked the trend and has gone in the other direction. Instead of removing the compressors or charging as many gas companies have gone to - Giant Eagle offers sophisticated systems that automatically will set your tire pressure to a specific level. All you have to do is enter the amount of pressure you want in your tire, and the machine will do it automatically. It will even release air from your tire if it’s over inflated. Of course this begs the question - what should my tires be set at? Exact tire pressure recommendations vary depending upon the manufacturer of the bike or tires. For most Harley-Davidson motorcycles, it seems that 38psi is recommended for the front and 44psi is recommended for the rear. That’s the same for many

We are one of the largest motorcycle markets (if not the largest) in the country, yet we have to travel out of state to visit an Indian dealership. I’m not trying to be critical, just wondering out loud. I guess I could just call and ask, but I write this column each month.. and well, I thought I’d share the question with everyone.
SEARCHING FOR INDIANS! A few months ago I had the chance to visit an Indian dealership in another state with that state’s Thunder Roads Publisher. I’ve been avidly following the Polaris takeover of this historic brand and really like their apparent commitment to maintaining the unique style that has defined the “Indian Motorcycles” over the years. They have some pretty amazing bikes and from the look

The Thunderbird 1951 Triumph Thunderbird Drag Bike Geoff Baldwin, Thunder Roads Contributor: ReturnoftheCafeRacers.com
T
he year is 1954 and 15 year old drag racer Bobby Sirkegian positions his ‘51 Triumph Thunderbird alongside a soupedup, barebones hot rod. Art Barker host of the hit TV show “You Asked For It” drops the flag and the two high powered machines launch off down the Pomona, California drag strip. The race appears to be neck and neck but as the two cross the finish line Bobby is a full bike length in front. It’s a defining moment in automotive television history and a huge boost for Triumph motorcycle popularity in the United States. Now almost 60 years later the “Baby Mine” Triumph Thunderbird is as stunning as ever and has just changed hands after being in Bobbies possession since he retired from drag racing in 1956. Bobby and his father were approached by “You Asked For It” after a young female viewer asked to see the race take place. Bobby was popular in the drag scene due to his age and the fact that he had plenty of wins under his belt so his drag strip exploits were frequently in the media. Sirkegian Senior owned a Los Angeles dealership which funded Bobbies drag racing career and was also responsible for the impressive tuning of the Thunderbird. “Baby Mine” ran a 650cc engine with high compression pistons and a ported and polished head; a balanced crankshaft, custom ground camshafts and lifters, S&W racing valve springs, lightened cam gears and a custom dual carb set up with remote floatbowls. It was with this set up that Boddy won the 650cc class of the NHRA Nationals two years running and put that hot rod in it’s place (if you’re not in first place, you’re last!). Along with the awesome performance upgrades “Baby Mine” also had its fair share of aesthetic mods. All the non-essential gear such as lights was stripped away leaving the bike clean and bare. A smaller p-nut Wassel style tank replaced Triumphs original heavy steel unit and the front brake was dropped. The tank and fork sleeves were then was finished in the same vibrant red you see on the bike here along with the hand rendered Triumph logo and “Baby Mine” script. At 17 years old Bobby retired from drag racing to pursue a career in AMA flat-track and road racing. Since 1957 “Baby Mine” stayed in Bobbies possession undergoing a full frame up restoration in recent years. The bike went up for auction last year with a sale price of around $48,000USD and it came complete with a script from the episode of “You Asked For It” singed by Bobby Sirkegian himself. The argument to arm teachers, school administrators, janitors or even the lunch lady is being made, and acted upon, here in Ohio. The school system is the legal de-facto guardian/parent of your child when they are at school and are legally responsible for their safety. They are responsible for providing adequate fire drills, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers and hoses in each school. Riddle me this: How many children have been killed by fire in the United States in last 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? 50 years? Can’t think of any can you? We put thousands if not millions of dollars into training, equipment, construction of building to meet fire code, etc. Now how many children have been killed by an active-killer or other school violence in the last year? Last 5 years? Last ten years? Where should schools money go toward preventing the greatest likelihood of death or injury to your child? Schools need to pull their head out of the sand and allow a teacher WHO CHOOSES to carry on campus the ability to do so. They ARE the ultimate first responders. Buckeye Firearms Foundation is a 501.3.c, non-profit who’s primary purpose is to provide training to shooting enthusiasts throughout Ohio. We are all grassroots volunteers and 100% of donations go toward this cause. The Foundation has announced the first program of its kind: The Armed Teacher Training Program(ATTP). In this program BFF will pay 100% of the tuition, ammunition, and room/board for any teacher in Ohio getting their concealed handgun license training in addition to intensive ‘active-killer’ training. Each school board must first approve these teachers to carry on campus and once that happens we want to provide a NON-governmental solution, free to teachers, to protect our children. Our prototype class will provide 24 teachers with a three-day ‘Active-Killer’ class from Tactical Defense Institute in West Union, Ohio. The Foundation has received close to 1000 applicants for the initial 24 spots. Once we have established a reproducible core curriculum we will work with shooting venues and instructors throughout Ohio to get good firearm training to the school people who want it.
18
This training does not come cheap: The cost of each teachers training is well over $1000. BFF is going to fully fund the first class of 24 but going forward we are in dire need of corporate and/or private donations to provide totally free training to teachers, administrators, or other school support personnel. This is about pro-gun, pro-freedom folks putting their money where their values are. If you have a teacher/school worker in your life who has a CCW or is active in shooting sports please have them get their application into BFF for this training. Go to www.buckeyefirearms.org or www.buckeyefirearmsfoundation. org to fill out the ATTP application and/or to donate. In future articles I will be waxing on about firearms, training and gun politics. Any good instructor learns from each class or group they talk to and I’m sure I will learn a lot from you and hopefully I will plant a few seeds of thought myself. The tactical world and the riding world share a critical life-saving skill. Observation. Riders must be constantly aware of their 360-bubble, what is in it, around it and have the ability to predict 2 minutes up the road. Carriers must also be aware of the same bubble, the possible threats, and to anticipate and escape, or if need be provide a velocity based solution to a life threatening problem. I’m Clint Lake. Chief Instructor of my own business, Right Defense. Training Coordinator for Buckeye Firearms but more importantly a husband, father, son, and brother to people who love me. Then late last year, Polaris announced the RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition. This top of the line, limited edition is scheduled to reach dealerships in late January 2013. “We’re very excited to offer the Jagged X Edition which provides a whole new customer solution featuring the most popular options straight from the factory,” says Craig Scanlon, general manager, Recreational Off-Road Vehicles for Polaris. “This vehicle is the most complete RZR ever built, combining the ultimate in performance, comfort and incredible styling.” In name the newest RZR sounds similar to any other LE model in the XP family except for two very import letters – H and O. Changes include new profiles on the intake and exhaust camshafts, and the addition of stiffer valve springs. These changes were paired with a new engine calibration and a stainless steel SLP exhaust with dual outlets for increased exhaust flow and what Polaris calls an aggressive race-inspired sound. For comfort in the cabin, Polaris added deep-bolstered, five-point, harness-ready PRP seats, an easily adjustable driver seat and more than an inch of additional legroom. The successful season, which included five podiums in six races, showed the capability of the unit, provided a whole new customer solution and is the inspiration for the RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition.” Other new features on the 900cc RZRs include easier shifting out of park, and a wet sump engine, allowing for easier oil changes, and a new rear cargo box that is flat for more storage capability. The RZR 800 was the vehicle that started it all and for 2013, the unit will feature dual-rate suspension springs for increased ground clearance across all payloads giving the original trail-capable side-by-side even more capability on the trail. All RZRs also will feature new, flow-through seat belts for easier adjustment and are available in Indy Red as a standard 24
color. Limited Edition models include the RZR 570 Trail Edition with EPS, EBS and Turf Mode; Nuclear Sunset, Sunset Red, Polaris Pursuit Camo and Blue Fire with EPS for the RZR 800; Blue Fire/Orange and Orange/White with new matching Orange cab frame for the RZR S 800; Blue Fire/Orange with EPS for the RZR 4 800; Stealth Black/Evasive Green, Orange Madness/Blue with EPS and the Black/White Walker Evans Limited Edition with EPS for the RZR XP 900; and a Black/ White/Red Limited Edition with EPS for the RZR XP 4 900. For 2013, Polaris is offering two different “custom” versions of the RZR XP 900 - the Orange Madness/Blue LE and the Stealth Black/Evasive Green LE. Both models come standard with all of the fine tuning and great features of the base model, but they each have a few extras as well. The Orange Madness model has a customized look with bold colors emblazoned on the seats as well as the dash, hood, control arms, trailing arms and rear radius rods. There is no chance that this will be mistaken for any other UTV out there! Polaris also gave this edition a bolder look with a set of BajaCross tires and 12-inch Black Crusher rims.

The Stealth Black/Evasive Green LE RZR has a more subtle, low-profile look. It has splashes of green across its body and the RZR logo is embroidered on both seats to match the green and black theme. This bike has the same tires and wheels as its brighter brother, but what it doesn’t share is the electronic power steering (EPS). This feature is reserved for the Orange Madness LE, but you can talk to your dealer about having the option added on to this ride if you prefer the color scheme. LAMB OF GOD’s John Campbell, 20 questions with a Rock Star that rides!
O
f the metal bands out there today that have evolved from the U.S. market in the last 15 years, LAMB OF GOD in my opinion stands out as one of the heaviest and true to their sound. Their raw, un-processed, aggressive, in your face style has aspired them to international success with 7 studio albums under their belt since 1999.
Heavy metal report
I had heard rumor that bass player John Campbell was an avid bike rider, after some investigation I was indeed correct! So I asked if he’d like to sit and chat for a while on their last pass through Columbus, Ohio. He was happy to do it, and here is what he had to say: TR: John, Thanks for taking time out to BS for a while today. JC: Aww, no worrys man there’s not a lot going on now until sound check! TR: I’ll keep this simple and we’ll try and conform it to “lets play 20 questions” but knowing when bikers get together it takes off in different directions! JC: (laughing) Yea that is the truth, OK I’m ready to play..I’ll take question one for $100 please TR: What bikes do you prefer? More over what bikes do you own? JC: Well, currently I have 2 bikes both Harleys. I have a 01 Sportster, and a 82 Shovel head. TR: Are you more into the older stuff or the new flashy choppers and baggers trend? JC: Nooooooo, nothing flashy. I mean it’s cool and all, just not me. I grew up and still kinda associate with the old school 70’s-80’s bikers. I ride to ride, I don’t ride to draw un-necessary attention to myself or what I have. I’m a family man ya know, so when I’m not here playing out n stuff I like to be true to me. 28
TR: Ok well then on that note. Besides being an international rock star who is John Campbell? JC: Well, I’m like anyone ya know? I’m a husband and a dad, I have 2 kids, I still live in my home town, the Richmond Virginia area. I spend my time at home with my family, my bikes, and my music. I’m a simple guy ya know? Nothing outta the norm, you know. TR: Excellent, so what’s your normal day like at home? JC: Well uhh I’ll usually get up with my wife and get the kids ready for school n stuff. My wife works 3 to 4 days a week so then I’ll spend time with my family, I love work’n on bikes so I’ll go hang out in my buddies shop “Atom Bomb Custom Motorcycles” and help him or in some cases slow him down by looking at all the cool custom shit he’s doing there for people. (Laughing) I guess I’m not the celebrity type at all you know, I kinda shy away from that crap man. I like having a normal life…what is normal right!? (Laughing) but no seriously I am a very laid back and normal guy that really enjoys my life. TR: When you out on the road…what the fuck do you do with your time beside talk bikes with me? JC: (Laughing hard) Well honestly I dig this shit, it’s a nice break from the normal interview! Uhh let’s see well I do interviews ThunderRoadsOhio.com
and meet with label people, interact with other bands and crew on the tour, meet with friends in different cities. Actually on occasion I’ve managed to pull off riding while touring! TR: How’d you do that? You didn’t pack up the sporty on the merch trailer did you!? JC: HAHA No, I have friends in different cities that ride too you know, and like this one time in particular I met up with my friends and they rented me a bike. We went rolling around the Rocky Mountains for the day. It was incredible, so many beautiful places I’d like to go hit one day. TR: Just once? JC: Ohh no way many times, but there was another memorable time we were in Australia touring with Metallica. This one friend of mine hooked me up so his friends and I all went out scooting around on the southern hemisphere. All was good except for this one god damn round about. You know they drive on the other side of the road there..so that proved to be a challenge! Almost bit it on some diesel fuel in the road too. Ya, that could really sucked but I’m still here! TR: Does the management have issues with you taking off like that? JC: HA! Man I’m the bass player, not the singer (laughing). No I think my wife has more issue with it but I love the road and being on 2 wheels, they really don’t care. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
much different from the rest of the crowd (laughing). Yes it has happened a couple times but people have been cool about it. TR: Where do you enjoy riding most? JC: Well, Richmond is not all that big really. Just outside the city and traffic lights is all country, so I enjoy that a lot. Just getting away from the majority of the traffic and people, taking in the countryside and fresh air. TR: Bass player or not everyone has their own dynamic that they bring to the music, so any loss of that could change things! Anyhow, about your bikes. Tell me more about them, like what you’ve done or anything special about them. JC: Well as I said I have 2. The Sporty I chopped and bobbed, with a shitty DNA springer front end that broke! Ended up going to my buddy Clay at Atom Bomb and asked if he could help me out with a better front end. Actually this has taken off and its now hard tailed, slammed and has some frame mods , a real set of forks, and a kick start! TR: I thought you’d keep the springer with that look but I suppose the kick start to an 01 evo wasn’t cheep either? JC: No, you know that was about a grand by itself. I make ok money but I do have a family and I don’t need a 30 thousand dollar bike to get me around town. Besides the forks ride better than the springer anyway and probably won’t break! TR: What about your other ride? JC: My other bike is a 1982 FXS Shovel, Electric start that I never use because it has kick start. Right now the folks here in Ohio at “Gas Box” are rebuilding the motor for me, I have the thing stripped down to a roller and I’m powder coating some of the parts to freshen em up. It already has a sweet paint job, but it just needed rewired and shit so I tore it all down. It should look sick though I’m doing black powder coated stuff and the paint is a pearl root beer color with scallops. I have a set of hard bags I’m going to get painted and try to get em on there too. But you know, the FX didn’t have bags so I had to grab a FL fender and struts to try and make this work! TR: Ya, all those older bags were fiberglass so hopefully they aren’t all cracked! JC: Ohhh yea they’re fiberglass and yea they need some fixing up but then I’d have some room to take some crap like a jacket and stuff. TR: How did you get interested in the bike scene? JC: Well, I guess it goes back when I was Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
a kid. My dad owned a bike but wasn’t a “biker” like people think of it ya know? I had seen old issues of Easy Rider and just thought that was the coolest shit in the world. Seeing all these guys having fun and different bikes, and of course the ladies ha-ha! I just love the burleyness of the 70’s scene. The bikes are classy and simple, sometimes unlike the dirt bag looking guy that’s riding it haha. It’s a sharp contrast that has a lot of mystique you know? TR: What about now? JC: (laughing) well you know, there’s noting like flying down the road sitting on top of hunks of searing hot metal and the damn things exploding between your legs! It’s loud and proud, just be’n a grown up kid! Also allows me to get away from life, like my phone ringing or the day to day BS. It just helps me clear my head you know?
TR: Word has it that you are a vegetarian? JC: HAHAHA YA, yes I am. I know weird for a rocking biker but it’s a choice I have made some time ago to keep myself healthier. TR: Any issues with that on the road? JC: Well no these days not so much since we’ve progressed, the venues makes sure we have our list of requirements taken care of. Like I said it’s a personal choice and mainly just about the mass produced food and they way it is done. Its unhealthy breeding animals, pumping them full of chemicals to fatten them up for human consumption. For instance eating deer meat from a wild deer is much, much better for you than a hamburger you’ll get at one of the fast food places. That crap is so unhealthy in many ways and I just choose to limit my consumption of crap.
As a show of appreciation I presented John with some of Thunder Roads BIKER BREW! John was very excited about the concept JC: Well not that I haven’t & he chose the Diet Root given it serious thought, but beer. John mentioned for now I’ll keep playing that they are planning on and maybe one day I’ll be touring through the end of able to learn more about 2013, and getting some the fabrication side of studio time in afterwards. things and start building However the situation with some bikes. You know Randy may change things beating metal around and for the band. For those that John Campbell wants his welding it together ahh don’t know lead man Randy love that stuff! Old School Biker Brew!” Blythe is being accused of manslaughter by the Czech TR: So do you attend bike rallies or bike Republic Government due to a moshing shows at all? accident during a concert in 2010 with a spectator. Unfortunately the following day JC: (Groaning) Well, to be truthful man… after this show and interview Randy was when I get home I don’t like to be in the formally indicted by the Czech government. public any more than I have to be. TR: On that note when you’re out how often do you get the “oh wait aren’t you that guy!?” JC: (Laughing) Well, not nearly as much as you would think… c’mon I’m tatted, have long hair and a beard. Not like that’s ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Place sliced mushrooms in a 1/4 inch of olive oil for total browning over medium-low heat. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl, stirring until smooth. Add next 5 ingredients, pour over chicken. slow roast on top of stove for 1 hour or until chicken is done. Serve with buttered noodles. * My mom used to make this same recipe in a cast iron skillet, but she’d jazz it up by adding strips of green, red and yellow peppers and letting it all cook down on top of stove with a cover over 3/4 of the skillet to allow air to flow. Green chilies is a nice addition also. Any way you do it, this dish is fabulous and the key to it is slow and steady. Don’t rush the good stuff.
In a blender or food processor, combine yogurt and cranberry juice. Add strawberries, raspberries and sugar; cover and process until blended. Pour into chilled, fancy dessert glasses. Serve immediately. These are so rich, you can serve as dessert.
Beat whipping cream at medium speed with an electric mixer until foamy; gradually add powdered sugar; beating at high speed until soft peaks form. Gently stir in liqueur and lemon rind. Serve with chilled, fresh strawberries and dip away.
Prepare and bake cake according to package directions, using two greased and floured 9-inch round baking pans. Cool for 10 minutes, remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt; gradually stir in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from the heat. Stir a small amount of hot filling into egg yolks; return all to pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Place half of the whipped topping in a bowl; add strawberries. Split each cake into two horizontal layers; place one layer on a serving plate. Spread with half of the strawberry mixture. Top with a second cake layer; spread with custard. Add third layer; spread with remaining strawberry mixture. Top with remaining cake and whipped topping. Refrigerate overnight. Garnish and serve.

DIY: Ethanol Free Gas
Mark The GoldWing Doc Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Goldwingdocs.com
Ethanol is the scourge of owners of motorcycles, boats, and many other gasoline-operated vehicles and implements. E10 (10% ethanol) is pretty much the only available gasoline in most of the country now, with a few stations offering ethanol-free gas. And E15 (15% ethanol) is coming Ethanol IS NOT intended for soon, recently approved by motorcycles. the EPA for 2001 and newer cars - even though the car manufacturers don’t want it, and it is not approved for use by any motorcycle manufacturer either. You can thank the ethanol lobby for that. “E15 won’t be a problem - I’ll just select my regular E10 on the pump,” you may say. Well, there is a problem - the pipes and hose of the fuel pump contain about 3/4 gallon of whatever was last dispensed - and that could be E15. 3/4 gallon isn’t much when you’re pumping 15 gallons into your car, but when you’re only pumping a few gallons into your bike, which doesn’t like ethanol to begin with, 3/4 gallon makes a big difference! What’s the problem with ethanol? The biggest problem is phase separation. Like brake fluid, ethanol is hygroscopic, which means it bonds very easily to water. If there is moisture in the air (which there always is), the moisture bonds with the ethanol. The combination of water and ethanol is heavier than gasoline, so it falls to the bottom of the gas tank, where the pickup is. Let your bike sit for any length of time, particularly with a partiallyfull gas tank (because the air space left will contain moisture, and will expand and contract with heat, sucking in more moisture-laden air), and your tank will have a layer of water/ ethanol mixture on the bottom. This is called phase separation. Guess what gets sucked into your engine the next time you start it? The water/ethanol mixture will burn in your engine, but it will burn much leaner and hotter, with the potential for serious engine damage as a result. Ethanol is particularly corrosive to plastics, rubber, aluminum and fiberglass when compared to straight gasoline. If you have a vintage bike with a fiberglass tank, and are running E10 gasoline in it, the tank is likely swollen and on its way to failure as the ethanol breaks down the fiberglass. Many bikes have developed leaks and problems from swollen gaskets and failed rubber hoses and seals, all as a result of E10. When E10 is allowed to sit for a long time, particularly somewhere where air can get in, like a normal vented gas tank, the volatile portion of the fuel will eventually evaporate. What’s left is a milky goo. This goo eventually hardens into an amber solid, which then cracks into tiny pieces - heading directly into your carburetor to clog jets and cause failures.
So what is the solution? Well, you can check out the web site http://pure-gas.org to try to find a gas station near you that sells ethanol-free gas. Hint: many boat marinas sell ethanol-free gas, because with the added moisture in a boating environment, E10 plays havoc with boat engines.
Or...you can make your own ethanol-free gas. Yes, you heard me right! Make it yourself! I never even thought about doing this, until I read the excellent article “Removing Ethanol from E10 Fuel” by Dave Searle in the December 2012 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News - my absolute favorite magazine. If you haven’t got a subscription to this magazine yet, stop reading this right now and go subscribe! I promise you won’t be sorry. I’ve using a few pictures from Dave’s article in this article. So as you can guess, you don’t actually make your own gasoline, you take regular E10 gasoline and remove the ethanol. Because ethanol boosts the octane in gasoline, I recommend you start with premium gas. Removing the ethanol from the premium will in the process lower the octane to the equivalent of regular gas. If you start with regular E10, you will need to add an octane booster, available at any auto store, or Wal-Mart. So how do you remove the ethanol from E10? It’s quite simple, actually - just add The water and Ethanol water! Remember, ethanol automatically separates binds strongly to water. All you itself out from the gas.. need to do is add some water to the gasoline, agitate to make sure it mixes well, then let it sit for a few minutes. The water will bond with the ethanol, and it will phase-separate out, falling to the bottom of the container. How much water do you add? Well you can’t add too much. If you don’t add enough, then it won’t remove all of the E10, and what E10 does bond with the water, will separate to the bottom of your container. If you add too much, the available ethanol will bond to the water, and the remaining water will separate to the bottom. You’ll then have three layers: gasoline on top, ethanol/water in the middle, and water on the bottom (see the picture).
Two stroke engines definitely have problems with E10: ethanol breaks down the lubrication provided by the fuel/oil mixture, leading to engine seizures! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
ThunderRoadsOhio.com
In Dave’s article, he used a cheap plastic separatory funnel with a small valve at the bottom, along with a 500cc cylinder for measuring the fuel and a 25cc burette for measuring water: Once filling his funnel with E10, adding water and letting it sit, the water/ethanol
continued... 33

separated out, and could be drained using the valve: So how much water do you add? It depends on a few things, including the actual concentration of ethanol (which will vary - it’s seldom exactly 10%), and ambient temperature. Dave’s testing shows that the optimal amount of water is 2% by volume of the E10. That’s 2.56 oz per gallon, or 12.8 ounces for a five-gallon gas can. Remember that extra water will simply separate out, so two cups (16 ounces) of water in a five-gallon gas can is safe. You should use distilled water only, to avoid leaving behind any minerals or other additives that your engine may not like (does fluoride keep your carburetors clean?). The biggest problem - in what sort of container do you perform this procedure? Dave suggested a five-gallon glass or PET plastic jugs, like those that are found at http://www.midwestsupplies.com fitted with stopcocks and vent tubes. My suggestion is a bit simpler: Buy a regular five-gallon gas can:
To the end of the spout, glue several inches of large, transparent PVC pipe:
At the end of the PVC pipe, fasten a valve with a compression fitting:
Fill the can with E10, add two cups of distilled water, fasten the spout/pipe/valve, shake well, then turn the gas can upside down - fit it in a sawhorse or some other fixture so that the PVC pipe is pointing straight down. You want the absolute lowest point of the gas can to be the outlet for the spout, so that all of the heavier water and ethanol/water moves out the spout and then into the PVC tubing. Wait for the ethanol/water to separate out and drop down into the PVC (you’ll see it), then open the valve slightly to drain out the ethanol/ water. Once it’s drained out, turn the gas can back upright - and you’re done! So do you want to do this every time you fill up your bike? Probably not. But it’s certainly doable for small batches of gasoline for use in small engines (lawn mowers, weed trimmers, any two-stroke engine), to put in your bike just before putting it away for the winter (or for storage of any length of time), or for putting into devices that sit for long periods of time without being run - like backup generators.

VEGAS BIKE
W
hen Power Sports Institute decided that they were going to participate in the Vegas Bike Show they decided that they wanted to show up with something that would get everyone’s attention. So a pair of students , Mike Escott and J.T. Cramblett, took the lead on a new build to showcase the skills that they learned at the Ohio training facility.
Ron Radeke, Director of the V-Twin Program at PSI, contacted some of their partners and a number jumped on board the project. The result is simply known as “The Vegas Bike” and Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to present it for consideration. The engine is a 124” beauty courtesy of S&S (www. sscycle.com). The frame is a Thompson Choppers’ “Gunslinger” model (www.thompsonchoppers.com) and the wheels were courtesy Ride aWright Wheels (www. ridewrightwheels.com). Other contributors included Primo Rivera, Accell Wires, Bikers Choice, Avon Tires, J-Brake Controls, and Spectro Fluids. The custom seat was created by Josiah Berens - who has opened his own custom leather business since graduating from PSI. PSI Instructors Pat Downey and Pete Gonzales 40
handled the custom paint job. Both are nationally recognized artists and judges with The Ultimate Brushoff (www.ultimatebrushoff. com) and they certainly didn’t disappoint with this project. Hometown supporter Sherwin Williams donated the paint. The result is a custom ride that certainly caught everyone’s eye at the Vegas Show. Looks for it to be on display at this month’s Easyriders Show in Columbus (Feb. 8-10).

THUNDER Thunder Paws is an effort by Thunder Roads Ohio to showcase and raise awareness for rescues and shelters across Ohio. Many of these programs are in dire need of assistance and we know that many of our readers would welcome the opportunity to help. Each month we will showcase an organization and some of the animals that they are working to place. If you are working with a shelter / rescue or would like to recommend one for us to feature please email us at: ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com
Justice: Justice and his brother Stutter were dumped off at a shelter and their time was UP! He loves to lay in his bed or crate, or maybe your lap! He does have cloudy eyes, but a vet has cleared him and he can see just fine. Justice loves to receive your attention and would be great lap dog. Stutter: Stutter and his brother Justice were dumped at a shelter that euthanizes when they run out of spaces for new dogs. He is very playful and loves to run around the back yard. He would LOVE a family of his own to play with him.
MULPTIPLE BREED RESCUE Multiple Breed Rescue is a 501c3 rescue group dedicated to helping those who cannot help themselves. Amy Hunt (Founder and President) began her journey in 2006, pulling dogs that were on death row at high kill shelters. Today, MBR has saved 969 dogs and counting. While MBR does not have a physical shelter, they are made up of a network for foster homes. Each dog that comes in experiences love and care, that many have never seen, before they are placed in their forever adoptive homes. MBR is run 100% on volunteers and donations. All of our dogs are fixed, up to date on shots, and micro-chipped prior to being adopted out. For more information on our group, any of these dogs, or how you can help please email us at amy2002buckeye@ yahoo.com. And of course, you can visit us on our website - www.mbrohio.com Randy: Randy is a sweet loving boy who was pulled from death row at a pound in Lawrence County. He is great with other dogs, kids and cats. He has the perfect temperament, just wants to lay around and have his belly rubbed.

PAWS
Tessa: Tessa’s story starts out as a mom with puppies she was barely able to feed. Malnourished and fearful of humans, Tessa lost two of her puppies to starvation before MBR could get in to help her. Once in the rescue, all of her remaining pups grew to be healthy and happy and were all adopted to loving families. Tessa has come a long way and is slowly but surely learning to trust humans. She is fine with cats, dogs and adults. She does not mind children, but doesn’t like to be chased. Tessa is looking for a home that will understand she needs time to warm up. She knows she can be a great dog, she just needs time to show you. Ginger: Ginger was pulled from a pound as heartworm positive. After months of love, care and medicine in her foster home, she is ready to find her furever home. Ginger is great with other dogs, cats and children. She is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly and loves to play.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
february 2013
We have a legislative victory! Verbiage from our handlebar bill was amended into S.B. 114 and was signed into law on December 19, 2013. This new law allows the maximum handlebar height to be no more than shoulder high. The previous law was no more than 15” from the lowest point of the saddle to the handgrip. The biggest reason for the new law was the old law was out of date based on current motorcycles styles being manufactured. I realize that many people would prefer to have no restrictions as long as the motorcycle can be operated safely. I’m right there with you and agree 100%. That was where this legislation initiated. A limit of no restrictions was too big of a jump from 15” from the saddle for our legislators to accept, so we negotiated and took a step in the right direction. I am hoping that in the next few years we can go to our legislators and say we made these changes back in 2012 and it has gone well. Can we take the next step and legalize all motorcycle handlebars that can be operated safely? On to other things…. I had a meeting on January 15, 2013 with Rep. Rosenberger to discuss items that ABATE of Ohio, Inc. would like to see included in this year’s Transportation Budget. We discussed legalizing non-audio ear plugs designed for hearing protection. We discussed being able to park more than one motorcycle in a parallel parking space. We discussed S.B. 92; our Right of Way Bill. We discussed tax incentives for businesses to have motorcycle parking for customers. We discussed licensing and registration for the three wheelers with a cab. I left optimistic that the ear plugs and parallel parking issues would make it in to the Transportation Budget. Rep. Rosenberger is supportive of the Right of Way bill. This is very big, in size and importance, to be included in the Transportation Budget. We discussed the history of the bill and how the ROW group and the sponsors and worked to try to overcome objections to the bill in previous years. The last amendment, which was made to the bill during the last session, changed the bill considerably. This amendment was made due to a suggestion made by John Murphy of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Association. The Ohio Judicial Commission and the State Highway Patrol were both neutral on the bill. Rep. Rosenberger is going to check with the sponsor (Sen. Schaffer) for his input before recommending the bill for the Transportation Budget. Tax incentives for businesses to provide motorcycle parking for customers aren’t going to happen during this session. This is the same response I was given two years ago. We’ll keep that one in the holster and try again next time. Rep. Rosenberger is going to research licensing and registration of cabbed over motorcycles. The recommendation was made to license them as utility vehicles, similar to golf carts. If you are reading this prior to Feb. 2, 2013 and would like to be involved in ABATE of Ohio, Inc.’s Legislation agenda for 2013 please attend our Seminar. We will be having a session deciding our legislative strategy for the year. If you are unable to attend please check next month’s article for our plans for the following year. Ride Safe. Brotherhood
I
often wonder what the true meaning of Brotherhood is. Webster defines it as an “Alliance” or “Fellowship”. I guess that qualifies. But you know I’ve been wrong before. Especially in the club life. I mean I thought I knew where to find it. Sometimes our outside perspectives are so very wrong. I was one of those that grew up around a community of Bikers, Friends, and Brothers. But what I’ve grown to discover is the term is used way too widely and way too loosely. I mean I hear it all of the time. It could be another Biker at a bar, or even a gas station. “Hey, how’s it going Brother?’ Does the fact that I ride make me a Brother to everyone else who rides? You know what I’m talking about if you ride. That guy you pass coming down the road who gives you the quick wave. Sometimes even Jap Bike riders’ wave. Am I their Brother because we both share a passion for wind in our wheels? I’m pretty sure I don’t think so. What about members of other clubs? Do I automatically hate a person for the color or style of their patch? No, I usually don’t. But do I feel that they are my Brother because they wear a patch as I do? No, I don’t. So you know I’ve had the opportunity to ride with many different style clubs, even as a member and President in a couple. So are those current or former members automatically my Brother? No, they aren’t. I bought on earlier in life that members in my same organization were all my Brothers. But in the end, things don’t always work out like we think they will. I think some people find me approachable, others not so much so. In fact, one of my favorite sayings is that I want to be seen as “approachably unapproachable”. I find humor in that. The truth is I think I’m still defining Brotherhood. I mean I ride with several Club Brothers that wear the same patch as I do. I assume that they are all my Brothers. The truth is it doesn’t always end up that way. The only constant in life is change. People change. Attitudes change. Things change. So I wonder if I have Brothers in my club, who decide for one reason or another not to do what is expected of them to keep their membership, and they leave good or bad, are they now not my Brother? I find it all very confusing. I think sometimes I give people more credit, or hold higher expectations for them than they do themselves. I’m often disappointed in people who I was too quick to call my Brother. I’ve seen top tier players in clubs betrayed by their own so called Brothers. Much of this has really tainted my view on what real Brotherhood is. 50
At this point in my life here’s how I see it. If I know you, ride with you, hang out with you and you are dependable and solid, I don’t mind if you think we’re Brothers. The truth is when I leave all of this, one way or another; I think that’s when I’ll know who my real Brothers are. The ones I will still hear from, who will visit me in Florida when I move away. The ones who will raise their glass to my memory after I’m gone, you will be my Brother. Until then, don’t get your britches in a bunch if I don’t wave back on the highways. If you don’t know me, don’t Bro me.

Ryan Townsend at Work
The Ultimate BrushOff Winner: Ryan Townsend By: “T” Thunder Roads Oklahoma The Ultimate Brushoff isn’t just terminology used for a bad date. It’s the newest artistic competition in which the best aspiring airbrush and street artists battle it out. Not only do they get recognition by some of the industry’s top artists but they also win some wonderful prizes from IWATA Medea. The Fall 2012 Online competition winners were announced at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV on Halloween. Oklahoman, Ryan Townsend of Arcadia, was awarded 1st Place in the Ultimate Brush Off.
the winner of the 2012 Ultimate Brushoff Competition. Not only does this give Ryan notoriety among many airbrush enthusiasts and top airbrush artists in the world, but he won several prizes which ASET (Automotive Spraying Equipment Technologies) generously supplied including an Iwata Kustom Micron C airbrush, Iwata SmartJet Compressor, Skullduggery Stencil set and a Quick Disconnet Set. Ryan said of his win, “I’m really stoked about it”. Alan Pastrana said in a YouTube interview of Ryan’s talent, “Your use of Lighting, Shadow and Color is pretty amazing. How’d you come up with that?” Ryan’s answer seemed to surprise Pastrana, when Ryan answered, “I study your work and others’.”
Rightly so, the theme for the art submissions set by the competition was ‘Halloween’. Since Ryan was already in the process of creating the first of a series, portraying a beautiful female zombie killing machine, he decided to work on a piece from that collection for the competition. Ryan told Thunder Roads Magazine, “I got to the SEMA show and while walking around the exhibits, I passed by the IWATA Booth, where the Ultimate Brushoff was featured. One of my inspirational airbrush artists, Alan Pastrana, was there so I introduced myself.” Ryan was very shocked by what came next. He said when Pastrana heard his name, he looked at his name tag and said excitedly, “you’re Ryan Townsend from Arcadia, OK.” Laughing, Ryan confirmed he was who was on his name tag. That’s when Pastrana let him know he had just been announced 54
Other items noted in the judges’ decision, was the use of 100% airbrush with no mix media. The originality was noted as this piece was created using his girlfriend as a model, together with a self portrait of his own head using a mirror to create the zombie head. Ryan used everything from masking to freehand to shield work. His use of composition, contrast, lighting and the use of color; warm against cool were among the many factors that got him a first place. Additional recognition at the SEMA show was given to Noel Degroff for finishing 2nd and Tim Miklos for 3rd in the competition. Courtesy: Faith Estes, Ultimate Brush Off, and Ryan Townsend

How to Keep Your Tattoo From Fading
here’s nothing like a fresh piece of body art--the colors are so crisp and bright. Unfortunately, many people will notice their tattoo has faded over time and the colors aren’t nearly as vivid as they used to be. It’s normal for tattoos to fade some over the years, especially on areas exposed to a lot of sun. But some people’s tattoos will fade in just a matter of weeks or months. If the tattoo artist applied the ink correctly, your color should not fade too drastically. There are steps you can take to keep tattoos from fading so quickly.
5. Wear loose clothing while your tattoo is healing. Tight clothes that rub on a new tattoo can irritate and scrape the area to the point of pulling off flakes and scabs that aren’t ready to come off.
Don’t let this happen to your ink!
1. Follow the aftercare directions your tattoo artist provided you. Don’t switch to a different product because it’s cheaper or ignore the advice he’s given you because a friend told you it was ok. Tattoo artists who suggest specific products usually do so because they already know what kind of results you will get. They have probably tried several different aftercare products before choosing one to offer to their clients. If you completely disagree with a product he’s given you, then talk with him about an alternative that you’ve used in the past and see what he thinks. 2. Remove the bandage the tattoo artist should have covered your fresh tattoo with in the allotted time he specified to you. Wash your hands with an antibacterial soap and then gently wash the tattoo with antibacterial soap and apply a light coating of the aftercare product suggested by the tattoo artist. 3. Re-apply the aftercare product throughout the day, as needed. Keep the tattoo moist without saturating it. During the healing process, the tattoo still needs to breathe. If you overdo the ointment, it can pull color out of your tattoo. You will also want to wash it at least two to three times each day with antibacterial soap to rid it of old ointment and flaking skin and ink. After the tattoo is healed, a moisturizing lotion will help keep the color vivid when applied regularly, or when it feels dry or looks flaky. 4. Picking at or scratching any scabs that may appear on your tattoo during the healing process is a quick route to completely losing color in the spots that are picked off. Refrain from pulling off any scab, no matter how small, while the tattoo is healing; instead let the scabs fall off naturally. Some tattoos scab a lot and others may not scab at all, but the better you take care of your tattoo, the less scabbing you should have and the brighter the colors will stay. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
6. Stay out the water for 10 to 14 days while your tattoo is healing. Only take showers for the first two weeks following your tattoo procedure. Submersing your tattoo in water can pull the ink out and thus fade your tattoo. It’s especially important to avoid swimming, whether it’s in a lake, ocean, swimming pool or hot tub. Lakes and other bodies of water are full of microorganisms and germs that will attack an open wound; this is a quick way to get an infection in a fresh tattoo. Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs and salt in seawater can bleach out your color. The hot water in heated pool and hot tubs is a breeding ground for germs if the water is not treated with the proper chemicals. Again, this will lead to fading in your tattoo and possibly an infection.
7. Avoid or limit exposure of your tattoo to bright sunlight. The UV rays can cause it to fade, especially if the tattoo has colored ink rather than just black. Make sure to apply sunscreen before going outdoors. 8. Tanning should be avoided for 10 to 14 days, as well. The sun’s rays are very damaging to tattoos whether fresh or old and tanning beds are even more intense and cause more damage. Even if you cover your tattoo for the first two weeks, UV rays can still soak through many kinds of material and still affect your tattoo. After two weeks, you can go back to tanning as long as you use a strong sunscreen with at least a 35 SPF. 9. Take good care of your skin. Even after the tattoo is healed, the more you pamper your skin and the healthier your skin is then the brighter your tattoo will stay over time. This includes immediately washing off any harsh chemicals or other products you may get on the area around your tattoo. The longer the product sits on your skin the more damage will be done. This includes cleaning products, diesel and gasoline and anything with harsh ingredients. You should moisturizing your tattoo daily after it has healed. 10. Lastly - if all else fails and your tattoo fades, go back and see your artist. Many artists will provide color touch ups free of charge if your tattoo shows signs of fading, if they did the original work. At the very least they will most likely charge a reduced rate.

A man in a bar sees a friend at a table, drinking by himself. Approaching the friend he comments, “You look terrible. What’s the problem?” “My mother died in August,” he said, “and left me $25,000.” “Gee, that’s tough,” he replied.
“Why you worthless, insufferable, wretched, no good drunk!” she screamed. “Funny,” he muttered, “you even sound exactly like her.”
“Then in September,” the friend continued, “My father died, leaving me $90,000.” “Wow. Two parents gone in two months. No wonder you’re depressed.” “And last month my aunt died, and left me $15,000.” “Three close family members lost in three months? How sad.” “Then this month,” continued, the friend, “absolutely nothing!”

A serious drunk walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly. He immediately apologized and explained, “I’m sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her.”

Two guys were in a bar, and they were both watching the television hTwo guys were in a bar, and they were both watching the television when the news came on. It showed a guy on a bridge who was about to jump, obviously suicidal. “I’ll bet you $10 he’ll jump,” said the first guy. “Bet you $10 he won’t,” said the second guy. Then, the guy on the television closed his eyes and threw himself off the bridge. The second guy hands the first guy the money.
“I can’t take your money,” said the first guy. “I cheated you. The same story was on the five o’clock news.” “No, no. Take it,” said the second guy. “I saw the five o’clock news too. I just didn’t think the guy was dumb enough to jump again!”second guy.
