Once again we’ve teamed up with our friends at Ohio Bike Week to produce a comprehensive guide to the biggest motorcycle event in the Midwest. We are proud of this partnership for a lot of reasons and pleased to serve as The Official Rally Guide. If you’ve never been to Ohio Bike Week, I’d encourage you to come on out and discover what it’s all about. Regardless of what you ride and how you like to ride it - chances are that there’s something for you! Our passion is for riding and the sense of freedom that we get while flying down the road, trail, or through the air. We hope that Thunder Roads Ohio serves as a resource for those that love to ride - whatever their make or model. In this edition of Thunder Roads Ohio we’ve also tried a few new things and introduce a few new friends. You may notice that the magazine is organized a little differently this month. We’ve made an effort to sort the notices and some of the content by region. This isn’t an exact science, but we are looking to localize some portions of the magazine. We’ve also introduced a new sponsor listing in the back. This is essentially an index to the sponsors within the magazine. It should help everyone find their way around and quickly get to that notice they are looking for. For some time now, it’s been my goal to develop a regular focus on off-road riding and competitive racing within the magazine. I believe that this creates an exciting aspect to the magazine that is new to many street readers. As a parent, it also excites me to the possibilities for our younger generations. What better to combat the complacency that seems to be taking over our society - then motocross? Can an x-box even compete with the chance to ride through the woods on a 50? I can’t imagine. Last month we announced a new partnership with Competition Riders of America to develop racing content and promote their series. This month we build upon this with the introduction of new track partnerships including Dayton Motorcycle Club, Lightning Raceway, and the Amherst Meadowlarks. These aren’t just advertisers - they are partners. And we look forward to seeing more and more of you at the tracks as the summer progresses. Even if you’ve never been to a motocross or racing event before - we’d encourage you come out and discover the competitive side of our sport!

As told by

The Iron Cowboy Thunder Roads Ohio heads to Sturgis

August 7. Rob Zombie, on tour following the April 2013 release of his new album, will take the stage after Mastodon and Machine Head rile up the crowd during the 2013 Sturgis motorcycle rally. The Buffalo Chip already has an amazing lineup of artists this year - including Toby Keith, ZZ Top, The Cult, and Kid Rock. Visit www.BuffaloChip.Com for summer music festival information and campground admission passes.

The Group Ride This issue of Thunder Roads Ohio has literally hundreds of announcements and notices regarding rides and runs. Riding with a group, especially in a larger formation, can be an exciting experience. However, it can be a bit more challenging then simply riding by yourself. The following suggestions are from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (r) - and are great considerations to remember.

This year, the Thunder Roads Ohio crew will head back once again to Sturgis to cover the largest motorcycle event in the world. Sturgis is an incredible experience like no other rally or event - a blending of incredible riding experiences, brotherhood with riders from around the world, and a little bit of partying... And as luck would have it, we have a new partner to announce - the legendary Buffalo Chip. Thunder Roads Ohio is pleased to welcome the Sturgis Buffalo Chip as a new sponsor and partner with magazine. Since 1981, the Sturgis Buffalo Chip has developed into an incredible destination for riders from all corners of the globe. Set on 580 acres, three miles east of Sturgis, the Buffalo Chip is a festival experience like no other. It really is a rally unto itself, but of course it’s in the midst of the Black Hills Rally drawing over a half million bikers into some of the most beautiful riding destinations in our nation. We will be posting more and more information about Sturgis over the upcoming months - including updates such as the following from our friends in the area.

Motorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group -- whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally -- is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride: Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (See chart page 8). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style.

Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider. Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

Rob Zombie Headlines Night of Hard Rock at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® Summer Music Festival Sturgis, South Dakota (April 9, 2013) – The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® announces seven time Grammy nominated artist and pop culture icon Rob Zombie will headline an already aggressive lineup during the night of Hard Rock at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on Wednesday, 6

Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

The Iron Cowboy team sheltered under the stage during a touch of rain during Ohio Bike Week 2010. Rumor has it that a tornado actually touched down.

If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. Most importantly, in my book - be aware of who you’re riding with! It’s an unfortunate fact that not everyone that owns a motorcycle is a brother and some are folks that you probably don’t want to ride that close to. Be very aware of those around you at all times. They may not be as aware of their surroundings, might be inexperienced, or possibly even impaired (ie., a few too many). An unsafe rider is yet another hazard that you need to be watch out for on the road. We’ve included the MSF chart of hand signals on the next page for your convenience.

DIME CITY CYCLES

Mabel

CB750 Cafe Racer Geoff Baldwin, Thunder Roads Contributor: ReturnoftheCafeRacers.com

Last year the Cafe Racer scene was buzzing with the news that Dime City Cycles were building a custom motorcycle to giveaway, the bike they built was this Honda CB750 they named Mabel. Mabel was built by Herm and Jason at Dime City Cycle HQ in Florida and was handed over to a lucky New Yorker by the Iron & Air Magazine team at the 2012 Barber festival. I got in touch with Jason and he gave me the low down on how Mabel the Honda CB750 Cafe Racer came together... 12

I could say that the bike selection was due to the fact that the CB750 is the most iconic bike...blah blah blah but who am I kidding! We had about 10 bikes worth of 750 parts here and it just made sense. Plus, Herm and I really wanted to build a 750 as we hadn’t done one yet.” As it turns out Mabel is the perfect “how to” template if you’re wanting to build your own CB750 Cafe Racer. As Jason went on to tell me, most of the bike was made using bolt on parts from the DCC catalogue so I’ve taken the liberty of including links through to the DCC store where relevant. Mabel started out as a rusty old ‘78 Honda CB750 K that Herm picked up for a bargain. Before anyone could even think about raising an argument for restoration the CB was stripped down to a few buckets of parts and a sorry looking frame. The rear end of the frame was sliced off and replaced with a DCC weld on rear loop to allow for the fitment of a Legendary Motorcycle Thruxton Seat w/ DCC Originals Cushion . The Honda fuel tank was replaced by a Legendary Motorcycles Manx Tank with Monza Cap and was painted along with the seat in a Dime City Cycles red and black paint scheme by Moe Colors. Mabels rims are stock CB units wrapped in fresh Avon rubber but DCC re-laced them with fresh stainless steel spokesbefore powder coating them gloss black along with the detagged and cleaned frame.

Electrics were upgraded with the addition of a Dyna Electronic Ignition, programmed to deliver optimum performance from Mabel’s Keihin CR Racing Carbs and Performance Tuned 4-into-1 Exhaust System. Positioning Mabel’s rider correctly for Ton Up riding was done by swapping out the CB’s stock pegs for DCC Original Rearsets and by replacing the stock bars with DCC “Speed” Bars fitted with Nissin Controls and 2.5” Mini Gauges. Handling improvements come from front and rear Progressive Suspension with 2” shorter fork tubes and a 7-way Adjustable Steering Damper to avoid nasty surprises when exiting the twistys. Mabel also features a long list of Dime City Cycle upgrades such as fresh cables and fuel lines, new lighting, velocity stacks, plenty of polishing and some sweet details like a Dime set into the top clamp retaining bolt. “The aim of the Mabel build was to create a bike that had the had the fit and finish of all our high end custom builds using as many off the DCC shelf parts as possible vs. making custom ones. This way we could show our customers what they could build in there own garage. There’s nothing majorly complex or difficult on Mabel, the most difficult thing was the rear brake (it’s cable drive, not linkage) in the end, we wanted to convey that gorgeous custom builds can be done with off the shelf parts too for those who might not have all the high end fab skills.”

“When you encounter that one obnoxious squid on a GSX-R 600, you can merely slide back a tad in the saddle, down-shift a gear or two and leave him in the dust – shocked by the fact that an old classic just ate his modern power ranger cycle for breakfast.”

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

MAY 2013

At this point in the legislative session our legislators are busy working on the Operating Budget for the year. Rep. Al Landis has submitted one of our issues to be included in the budget. He has included clarification on how motorcycles may be parked in parallel parking spaces. Last session the Transportation Budget allowed motorcycles to back into angled parking spaces. The current law makes no exceptions for motorcycles to park any differently than any other vehicle in a parallel space. Technically motorcycles are permitted to park parallel to the curb in a parallel spot, just like a car would. Rep. Landis has submitted verbiage that permits motorcycles to park perpendicular in a parallel space with either tire towards curb. It also permits more than one motorcycle to park in a nonmetered parking space if space is available. We are also working on permitting non-audio hearing protection to be legal while operating a motor vehicle. Section 4511.84 of the Ohio Revised Code prohibits earphones or earplugs to be used by the operator of a motor vehicle. The law appears to be aimed at outlawing headphones for listening devices. There is no exception in the law for hearing protection. There was a case in Fulton County Ohio last September of a motorcycle rider being ticketed for wearing foam ear plugs while operating a motorcycle. This offense carries a 2 point penalty on the driver’s license. The “offender” is a CDL holder so the 2 points is a very big deal to him or anyone else found guilty of protecting their hearing with ear plugs. Rep. Landis brought this issue up as a possible Operations Budget issue. There was some debate about including this issue for a couple of reasons. The first reason was that it was not specifically a “budget” issue. The second reason was that motorcyclists could protect their hearing by wearing a full face helmet with a face shield. The decision was to not include the ear plug in the budget because of the debates. In the Fulton County ear plug case no judgment has been decided. An expert from the EAR Hearing Protection Company offered testimony that even with a full faced helmet; the noise level of wind was high enough to require hearing protection to protect the ears. The final ruling in Fulton County case could be critical in clarifying this issue. Rep. Green has submitted to Ohio’s law writing service (LSC) a bill to set up training for certified road guards in Ohio. We will work on this legislation, ear plugs, and increasing penalties for people who seriously injure or kill other motorists after the budget is complete. If you would like to discuss this in person with me one-on-one, my email address is legislativedirector@abate.com. My phone is 937-987-2396. You could also attend an ABATE of Ohio, Inc. BOD meeting the second Saturday of the month. I will also be at June Jam this year. I usually end up around the fire discussing the issues with members. Come join in. I want to represent what the members of ABATE of Ohio want. I can only do that if I hear from you. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. 18

The Harley-Davidson Garage Parties ®

Answers for women that are considering riding.

A

By Jinx Thunder Roads Ohio

s much as I love and adore my husband and the closeness that being on the back of the bike with him brings, I myself have often thought about giving up the comfort and security of the passenger seat and taking up the reigns on the front of the bike and taking charge of my own destiny, riding beside my husband, looking over at him and seeing the mirror of my smile reflected in his, instead of sitting behind him, looking at the back of his head. I’m sure many of you ladies have had this same thought, and along with that thought comes a slew of others thoughts, worries and questions, I’m sure. Well girls, I have news for you! There is help out there, yes, there is! And it’s FREE!!! I recently had the opportunity to attend the Women’s Garage Party at Century Harley-Davidson in Medina. Since Harley first introduced this event in 2005, Century has hosted Garage Parties for hundreds of women riders and this event just keeps growing. It seems as though the amount of women taking over the saddle is on an increasing uprise. Currently, women represent one of the fastest growing markets for Harley-Davidson, and 1 in 10 licensed riders are Women! This free after hours event is held every six months, and is a women’s only event hosted to help guide those who are interested in learning to ride their own motorcycle and have a bunch of questions that they may be wary of asking their significant others or their male friends for fear of being laughed at (because we all know the male species were just born with their vast knowledge of all things motorcycle related and never had to ask any questions... yeah right!) My girlfriend Kristie and I have been “joking” with our husbands for some time now about learning to ride, and getting our own bikes, so when I was asked to attend this event, I called her up and said, this is perfect for us, let’s go! We didn’t quite know what to expect, so let me tell you a little about the Women’s Garage Party. If you’ve been thinking about riding, but have lots of quests and no one to answer them - this may be just the thing for you. You may finally get answers to all of your questions! When you walk into the dealership, you are cheerfully greeted by some of the lovely staff, there you sign in and receive a goody bag with a number on it. There is time before the event starts to mingle with the other ladies in attendance, with a table full of food and an assortment of drinks like soda, water, beer & wine mingling should not be difficult. Remember, you are all there for the same reason, don’t be afraid to chat with everyone. They start by dividing you into small groups, hence the number 28

on your bag. First, my group was directed to the service department where they explained the “easy” way to get the bike off the kickstand and the proper way to pick up a bike if you were ever to go down. They demonstrated on a Heritage Softail Classic, which is considered a mid-weight bike, they laid it on it’s side and anyone who was willing to try was able to pick it up. It’s actually looks scarier than it is. Even the tiniest woman in our group was able to pick the bike up with ease. They answered any and every question thrown at them, never once making any of us feel that we were “stupid” for asking. Ding, the bell chimes and we wrap up in service and are directed to the sales floor where the salesmen answered all the questions about every type of bike Harley makes and which bikes are more popular than others and which are better for women. They explained how to tell the difference between some of the bikes. In the Dyna family, the shocks are on the outside, and in the Softail family, the suspension is under it. Turns out, anything in the Softail family are not only the most popular with Women riders, it’s what seems to suit them best, especially those with a shorter inseam. But if you are making that choice to become a rider, the choice of bike is ultimately yours and no one else’s. Isn’t this part of your decision to ride anyway, to be able to make your own choices! Go on now, go pick out your bike! Next up, my favorite section in the Century dealership, as most of you will agree, Motorclothes! Here not only will you find that cute tank top that you just have to have or that full rhinestone Harley belt that is sure to sparkle in the summer sun, but you will also find some very knowledgeable staff to help you with all of your essential riding gear. For those of you that are freeze babies, like myself, there is the 3 in 1 leather, with it’s zip out hoodie and full venting to the armor pockets to keep you protected should you ever go down, lighter weight fall leathers and an even lighter spring leather, all with all of the same protection options. The Harley Motorclothes staff will help you find the perfect riding boots that not only look fabulous but are just right for you and your bike. And of course helmets, not everyone agrees on the helmet issue, but fortunately we live in a right to wear State, so whether or not you want to wear a helmet, that choice is once again yours. But, for those of you who may not know, in the State of Ohio, a newly endorsed motorcycle rider must wear a helmet for the first year of riding, so you will have to purchase one and these gals in Motorclothes will help you pick the right style, shape and size for you. You can choose between the three styles, 1/2, 3/4 or a full face helmet. Some are plain, some have great

BIKE NIGHTS

“girly” graphics on them as well. Now finally, on to the Parts Department, this is where my husband spends most of his time while I am shopping for that new must have tank top. But now that you have made the choice to own and ride your own Harley, this may very well be where you will be spend quite a bit of your time. Because, every single bike is fully customizable. That’s right girls, you do not have to ride out of there full stock if you don’t want to. They can help you with anything from front tire to the rear tire, even with the height of your bike, if it’s just slightly too tall for you, you can have it reduced between 2 sizes, 1/2” or 1” reduction. Handlebars feel “weird” to you? No problem, they even have some on display for you to try out. The guys there can help you with it all, from helping you choose, to ordering it for you! So even though Kristie and I are “married” to the Motorcycle world in which both of our husband’s are Motorcycle Technicians and have filled our brain’s with the in’s & out’s of a Motorcycle, we still came out that evening with a whole new perspective and a lot more knowledge about riding our own motorcycle. I feel privileged to have attended this highly insightful event at Century Harley-Davidson. We enjoyed it so much, we have since signed up to take our Motorcycle Safety Course to become newly endorsed WOMEN RIDERS! So what makes you want to ride? From my evening at Century Harley-Davidson’s Ladie’s Garage party, I heard a lot of different answers from the women there. I found that no answer was the same and each answer came from the heart. Just as no question that was Jinx n Josh asked that night was the same. But does it really matter why you want to ride? I don’t believe so. What matters is how it makes you feel. Get in the wind and ride!! If you’ve considered riding on your own - be sure to keep an eye out and sign up for the next Lady’s Garage party at Century Harley-Davidson or a dealer near you. You don’t want to miss it! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

THE IMBBA BADGE The IMBBA badge tells the story of pride in workmanship and displays the tools of the trade. The Triangle: represents the geometry, mathematics and symmetry of the motorcycle frame. The Light bulb: atop the triangle, is symbolic on ingenuity and creative thinking. The Torch: represents necessary fabrication and engineering skills. The Wrench in the center repr sents all of the tools of the trade. The Motorcycle: The sum of all the attributes of education and training that go into the finished product.

Global Points Judging System

The two stars: on each side, represent the two competency levels of certification development.

The IMBBA points system is unique and simplistic, and does not require the use of classifications. IMBBA judges score motorcycles individually based on “Fit, Form, Function and Safety.” It has long been felt that classifications are used more as a monetary awards process in most bike shows. It doesn’t matter who built the bike or how much money was spent building it. What matters is the sum of all the points earned in recognition of how it was built. The points are awarded according to IMBBA published guidelines based on industry and safety standards that are strictly adhered to by IMBBA certified judges. Each bike is judged by three judges, the scores are added up, and then divide by three for an average score. No one judge can influence the system, and one or more Master Judges oversees every bike show.

BY GARY WESTPHALEN You’re hard on the throttle for about one second. Then you let off, allowing the momentum of the bike to carry you forward for another second. Again, you blip the throttle hard. Then off, and back on. The 82-year-old bike you’re on is shaking as it rumbles over the rough, wooden surface. Human heads are whizzing by to your right, down there at tire level. They are holding out dollar bills, waiting for you to reach down and snatch them away. Every two seconds you find yourself right back where you were two seconds ago. If you slow down, you will crash. To stop, you actually have to fall and re-orient your bike 90 degrees as you do so. This is either a very weird dream, or you are riding The Wall of Death. Actually, if you are riding The Wall, odds are still good that it really is a dream, because there are only a couple of motordromes remaining in operation in the United States. There is virtually no chance that you’ll ever ride one – even if you dared. For Don Daniels II, the chance that came 14 years ago can trace its roots all the way back to the motorcycle races of the early 1900’s. The Los Angeles Coliseum Motordrome, opened in 1910, was a round, wood-surfaced racetrack, not unlike the bicycle velodromes still in use today. This one was a mile long and designed for motorcycles. A new sport was born. Two dozen wooden tracks would spring up across the country over the next two decades, some stretching into ovals as much as two miles long. The curves were banked ever more steeply, allowing for faster and faster speeds. Fatalities were frequent and usually

64

included spectators because when the bikes crashed, they would launch over the top edge of the track, and into the crowd. Even for adrenaline junkies the carnage was too great and board track racing faded away as the races moved to dirt and asphalt. Just a year after that first motordrome opened, the concept had been shrunk to a transportable size, and the track had become nearly perpendicular to the ground. Nicknamed The Wall of Death almost as soon as it was invented, these minimotordromes were popular at events across the country. By the 1930’s, there were more than a hundred of them working the traveling shows nationwide. Today, there are only two functioning motordrome shows in the U.S., and Don is one of a mere handful of riders who know how to survive The Wall of Death. “Our particular motordrome was built in 1963 by the Boudreau family. They are actually from my hometown, which is Swansea, Massachusetts,” Don Daniels II tells Thunder Roads West Virginia. Joe Boudreau actually built three motordromes back then, and he successfully toured two of them around the East Coast. The third was targeted at a West Coast market, and its troupe was named the “California Hell Riders.” Eventually, Mr. Boudreau brought it back to Massachusetts, and the motordrome was moth-balled for years. Then, one of the last Hell Riders resurrected the motordrome in 1981 and Don Daniels, Sr. signed on as a wall rider the next year. Two years later, he would buy the motordrome, and it has been in the family ever since. “It’s really a lot of fun. You get to ride motorcycles for a living,”

Don and Sandra met at the accelerating bikes to climb Daytona Bike Week in 1996. “She from their normal, gravity-induced traveled with me for two years and orientation at the bottom of the barrel was asking me the whole time, ‘I to their insane 90° attitude as they want to try it. I would like to try it. I circle the wall at up to 50 miles per want to try it.’ I always told her that hour. her family would kill me if I let her “At first, riding the wall is very try it. Aside from being the most popular bike around in no substitute for practice, and after making the transition from the early 30’s, the 101 Scout was also perfectly engineered to gravity to centrifugal force thousands of times, it’s now old-hat hang on the wall. “They assumed it was a big deal to balance for Don. “I can go up there and I can look around, looking at the motorcycle evenly on both sides. Money Grab: As Don spins around in the barrel, spectators hold out dollar bills for him to snatch from their fingers. Even Don doesn’t know how he manages to make these delicate connections.

is that they are well balanced, which makes them perfect when you’re riding on the wall. You can just feel that when you ride it and take your hands off. When you have everything else lined up and everything is good, it will just pull straight.” That’s important when the rider lets go of the handlebars, which Don does in his act. With his arms held high overhead, Don circles the wall about every 2 seconds, trusting the old 101 Scout to hold its line, as Scouts have done for eight decades. “The big act back then on the 101 Scout was the free hand trick riding. It’s tough to trust your motorcycle to stay straight on the wall with no hands, because you are on a wood surface, so it’s not as smooth as riding on pavement. The bike bounces around a little bit. You’ve just got to trust your motorcycle and go for it. Even now that I’m experienced doing it, and I’ve done it so much, I can still hit one of those bumps where it will throw the bike off a little bit and tie my stomach in a knot for a quick second. It’s always on the edge. It’s definitely part of the show and will always be a part of it. It’s in the history of it.” Crashing is also in the history of motordromes. They didn’t get the nickname “Wall of Death” to be cute. Mechanical issues, Don says, are the greatest danger a wall rider faces. “If a guy rides on the road and something goes wrong, he can just pull over. If something goes wrong on the wall, and the bike comes to a stop, you come crashing down.” Don says he had only

66

been riding the 101 Scout for about a month when he was introduced to the collision of gravitational and centrifugal forces. It happened at the West Virginia State Fair. “The frame broke right underneath the neck, where the neck connects to the two downtubes. It snapped, so what happened was the front end came up and the bottom rail of the frame just went down and hit the wall and I was lucky enough that I was able to ride it right down to the floor and just fell when I got to the floor. I didn’t break any bones, but I got a bit of wall-rash. That was one of the scary ones.” The first time Don Daniels II brought the Hell Riders motordrome to Mountainfest in Morgantown, West Virginia, gave him another scare. They were in the middle of doing 24 shows in a single, very hot day. “When you keep running the bike in that hot weather, the tire gets real slippery. It just gets so hot. You’re thinking it’s sticky, but really it just got so hot the rubber was melting. I was in the middle of doing the act and the back tire just slipped right out. The next thing I knew, I was laying on my back and the bike was starting to come down and it kind of landed on top of me. My brother ran over and tossed it off. I twisted up my arm a little bit and my back was sore, but we took a short break. I was doing shows an hour later.” Once a staple of carnivals and county fairs across the country, motordromes and the bikers who climb these Walls of Death

are getting scarce. Just as no biker can stay up on that wall forever, the motordrome itself is, sadly, a piece of motorcycling that is feeling the gravitational pull of history. More than anyone, Don Daniels II doesn’t want to see that happen. But the demands of keeping their bike shop open, along with family responsibilities means that Don, Sandra, Ian and the rest of the crew just can’t spend eight months a year on the road like

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

they used to. As the winds of winter swirl around their home in Massachusetts, Don ponders the balancing act of life. “We love it so much we just don’t want to let it die,” he laments. “It’s just such a piece of history that we would like to keep it going. Even if we can only do a few spots a year, just to keep it alive, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN IS BACK! This is a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio! It’s a ride like no-other and features great prizes every month!

The Way it Works Each month Thunder Roads Ohio we will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops here in the magazine and online. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting stops, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and even the opportunity to win a motorcycle or two! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a BiketoberfestÒ Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

State and Stop Prizes

BONUS Check-in’s!

Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would

The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio. com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Some stops will also extra prizes for those with 2012 Ride Cards - for those “veteran riders”! Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners that make cool ride stops!

The RIDE begins May 10th! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

CHANGES FROM 2012 We’ve had changes in ownership and management since last summer’s run, so we feel obligated to make some big changes in the contest as well! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is built upon the same fundamental idea as last year’s - TO GET OUT AND RIDE! - but, we’ve made some key changes in the program. o We are no longer tracking points - which seemed to confuse many people. It’s all based upon check-ins. o All prizes are awarded based upon check-in’s. The more check-in’s the greater chance to win cool prizes! o Bonus “Check-In’s” are still awarded for spending over $10 at a stop, but we are no longer giving a $100 bonus. Some people felt that this allowed riders to “buy” their way to victory. o Prize Winners are listed every month in the magazine, online, and in our eNewsletters. Winners will have 45 days to contact Thunder Roads Ohio to collect their prize. o There is no longer a distance bonus, but the more you ride - the more chances you have of winning. Some prizes are restricted only to those riders checking in at a particular location. For instance, we may be awarding a $500 Gift Certificate to riders checking in at a particular dealership. Only riders making the trip to that particular dealership have a chance of winning. For the chance at winning $500 - it might be worth taking the ride to that dealership, especially if it’s a great ride!

Back in 2010, I started out with a bone stock 2010 Harley Davidson Road Glide, black in color, and I did not care for it much but I knew I wanted a Road Glide.

I got in touch with a good friend of mine, Matt Shay from Audiowerks Custom Cycles. He had done some work before for me on other bikes that I had and did a great job but this one was going to be a little more detailed. I told Matt my ideas, he loved them and added a few of his own. I wanted it to be white because at the time I would never see a white Road Glide, but plain white would not work for me so I wanted to add something besides skulls and flames so he added the crosses and chains which I think came out great. 90

Since Matt is an audio expert, I said to him “Let’s go nuts on the stereo!” and he knew just what to do! He put 4 6 x 9s in the bags and another set in the lowers then put in a set of 6 1/2 in the dash, all Hertz high energy with a Kenwood Double deck in the dash with 2 Ark audio Amps. When he first turned it on we could not believe this was coming out of a bike! I was blown away, it’s louder than most cars. It’s by far the loudest bike to come out of his shop. Matt cut and raked the frame for the front 26 inch wheel that I have to say looks amazing. He then stretched the tank, the bags and the rear fender, covered the seat to match then had Todd Cycles make a set a bars that look great on the bike. After it was all said and done I was very happy with the outcome! As I was telling Matt so, he told me he had a little surprise for me - I was blown away again to see he had installed a remote start with flame thrower he thought it would be a nice touch.... I thought so too!!

vets corner Across the United States, “retreats” have opened up to help wounded warriors and their families adjust to life back in the U.S. and “wind down” from the war. There are probably more in Michigan, but I am going to tell you about two that I know of.

A very generous individual donated Wilwin Lodge to the American Legion, department of Michigan. Wilwin Lodge is located in the Upper Peninsula northwest of Trout Lake. From their web site: http://www.wilwin.org, Wilwin is on property that once hosted a large lumbering operation, complete with a mill, railroad spurs and it’s own village. It is now a peaceful retreat deep in the north woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The lodge sleeps up to 15 people in a total of 6 bedrooms. With a 2 story atrium and dual stone fireplaces, it’s a stunning building. The property consists of nearly 600 wooded acres, a total of 5 buildings, including the lodge and Soldier’s retreat, and nearly 10 miles of well-maintained trails. Wilwin has three missions: Mission #1: Provide free rest and recuperation vacations for returning service members and their families. Mission #2: Add other uses and be self-sustaining in 5 years. Mission #3: Improve and increase facilities and capacity for more uses and be established as a permanent function of The American Legion in 10 years. Individuals who are interested in staying at Wilwin can fill out the application located at http://www.michiganlegion. org/pdfs/wilwin_application.pdf A recent retreat in progress is Camp Santo. Jim is a combat Vietnam vet, and the camp’s focus is for combat vets to be able to relax and talk with someone who has “been there, done that”, communicate with someone who has shared similar experiences. Another use Jim has for the camp is for a veteran who needs a place to stay for a couple of days. EDITOR’S NOTE: A few years back we ran a series of articles focusing on how to effectively plan, organize, promote, and execute various motorcycle events – starting with the Poker Run. After countless requests for reprints and updates we decided to revisit the topic this Spring and update the series. For immediate assistance with your next event, please send an inquiry to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

“A poker run is an organized event where participants, usually using motorcycles,.., must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. The event has a time limit, however the participants are not timed—winning is purely a matter of chance.”

- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“A poker run is basically a chance for folks to get together and ride, hang out and have a good time for the day – and then end up at a party! And a lot of times, it’s for a good cause which makes it that much cooler!” =- Hairy George, promoter and motorcycle activist

B

ikers celebrate a lifestyle that is built around riding and enjoying the camaraderie of other bikers. With our increasingly hectic lifestyle, few of us have the opportunity to take off on an Easy Rider style ride. More often we look for local organized rides as a chance to meet other riders and simply get out on the bike. Some of the most popular events are the local poker runs that fill our event listings all summer long. Over the last few years, more and more organizations have taken to hosting motorcycle poker runs as a means to raise funds and spread awareness. In many cases, the poker runs are hosted by local biker bars; but often times the host organizations have nothing to do with riding at all! Despite any stereotypes or 94

media attention otherwise, our society has certainly recognized the generosity of bikers and our willingness to help others. Thunder Roads spoke with Hairy George, an old school biker and veteran event organizer, about Poker Runs and their increasing popularity. “Years ago, there were four or five bike poker runs that every one attended. Now there are a dozen every weekend. Some of us joke that one of these days we’re going to find ourselves riding on the Wounded Butterfly Run,” Hairy laughs. “It’s not a bad thing, but certainly some runs are better then others. And I’m not just talking about the cause, but the ride itself.” Without a doubt there are many important considerations when

it comes to planning any charity event – and there are many unique ones when it comes to planning a motorcycle ride. Even if you’re an experienced rider, that doesn’t necessarily make you competent to host an event. Planning a ride for 1,000, 200, or even 100 riders is a lot different then planning a run for you and a few friends. “One of the most common mistakes I’ve seen made is planning a route with cross-traffic stops. For instance, if you’re routing everyone west bound your stops should be on the north side of the road – allowing your riders to make an easy right turn into the stop. If your stop is on the other side of the road, the riders are forced to stop and wait for on-coming traffic. This can hold up traffic and cause problems, especially if you have a lot of riders,” comments George. “And these problems can lead to someone getting hurt or worse.” If this is your first motorcycle event or ride, we would certainly recommend that you find someone with experience in organizing such events. Our first recommendation would be to partner with an entire organization that has experience in such things. There are countless riding organizations out there. From Harley Owners Groups ™ and traditional AMA motorcycle clubs to civil service and military riding groups, there are plenty of experienced groups that can help with your event. ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) is a grass roots, non-profit organization focused on motorcyclist’s rights and promoting safe riding practices. They have chapters throughout the state and have great resources when it comes to organizing a riding event.

the volunteers or resources to pay staff to work your event. If you don’t, there’s no point in going any further. The first group that you need to identify is your key organizers and leadership. If you have a large enough pool – you can set up committees to tackle specific tasks. For large rides with enough key personnel to pull it off, the following are standard committees or areas of responsibility. • Ride Logistics • One-Site Logistics • Registration • Volunteer • Marketing • Sponsorship • Awards • Social If you have enough people, you can set up committees to address each of these areas. If you don’t, a few hard working and dedicated individuals can cover these responsibilities. Either way, they need to be covered.

The key – as in most things, is planning and working with knowledgeable people. Thunder Roads recently spent some time brainstorming and working with Rich “The Lube Guy” Marinucci on some upcoming events. Rich is the host of countless events and resident Master of Ceremonies at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Columbus. In that capacity he has been involved in the planning and execution of hundreds of motorcycle themed rides and events over the years. We took some notes and asked a few questions about organizing a ride or poker run.

There are also professional organizations and promoters that handle such events as well. As “The mistake that many people The key to a successful poker run is a always it’s a question of cost and make is that they over-complicate well thought out and executed plan. return on investment. Being in Ohio, there are some fundamental restrictions in terms “There’s a lot of work to be done before hand, which a few hard working people can knock out; but you’re going to need people of our riding season. Traditionally, our season starts in May and ends in October. May and October are both dicey though, as to work the actual event.” inclement weather can hit us on either end of the season. It’s “From the folks handing out the cards to people flagging the bikes not uncommon for parts of Ohio to get hit with snow in October in the lot, it takes a lot of people to host a well organized run.” and the last few May’s have been amongst the wettest on record. your run. For instance, if you are hosting a poker run or charity run in Northeast Ohio – I’d recommend you getting a booth at the Louie Run. It’s a great chance to promote your ride to thousands of dedicated riders. If your ride is within an hour of Painesville (The Louie Run ends at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Painesville) and in May or June, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

When determining your route you first need to identify your starting and ending point, and then you fill in the points in between. You ideally need at least five stops, but you can adjust that by giving multiple cards or skipping cards at the start of the run. (There are a lot of considerations to the handling of the cards - which we will discuss in another segment. Suffice it to say, though, that we are not necessarily always fans of simply having riders draw cards at each stop along the way.) Your route should be between 50-100 miles and most riders prefer to avoid highways. The route should not involve areas of heavy traffic, if possible; but there should be sufficient gas stations and other stops along the way for riders if need be.

When bikers have a great time at an event, they often get primed for “the next ride” so I enjoy striking while the “iron’s hot”. These established events often present a great opportunity for you to present your ride to a group of riders together, when it’s easy to get everyone to commit. When launching a new ride, it’s worth considering opportunities such as this. Every little thing helps and it’s worth considering not only things that might conflict with your date, but also things that might contribute to your numbers as well. The earlier your ride falls in the season, the less time you have to promote it to riders through other riding events or bike nights. This is especially important to consider for new rides. Lastly, you need to feel comfortable that you’ve allowed yourself enough time to effectively plan and market your ride. If you are an experienced organizer with a solid pool of riders to draw from, (ie. from a riding club, customer base, or larger organization) you may be able to throw together a ride in just a few weeks. If you or your organization are new to the motorcycle community or inexperienced in planning a ride – you need to allow yourself more time to effectively plan the run. If this is a first 96

Your starting and ending points are the most high profile stops. Both points should have enough space for parking the bikes - as well as any cages driven by others frequenting the location, your own staff, and other various vehicles. You can have smaller stops along the way as not everyone will be hitting them at the same time, but you need to assume that everyone (and then some) will be at the start and finish of the ride. Generally your starting point has less requirements then the ending point. You will need to make certain that there are accessible restrooms for those preparing to ride off. You will also need space, tables, etc. for registration and breakfast if you are serving it. The ending point is a little more critical, as most events plan

around some sort of social activity at the conclusion of the run. Bands, DJ’s, Pig Roasts, Dinners, etc.. are all great ways to conclude a ride event - but you will need to make certain that your final destination can accommodate all of your riders, volunteers, and folks that may just wish to show up for the party. If you are hosting the Poker Run as a bar, restaurant, or other location that seeks to benefit from the business or traffic - don’t dismiss the possibility of using a different starting point. The ending point is where most of the revenue is at and has the most potential for keeping riders the longest, so if you’re the event planner - you want to keep that one. The starting point, though, is really a great opportunity to tie in a local dealership, a popular or highly visible destination (such as a state park or local landmark), or a key sponsor. I would make certain, though, that the alternative starting point brings something to the table. If they don’t - just have everyone leave your place and then come back. If you are organizing this event for a charity or other group that doesn’t necessarily have an interest in a particular location - you should assign the starting and ending locations to those sponsors / supporters that have contributed the most and have the means of properly meeting the needs of your event. The starting and ending points have the most promotional value, although its worth noting that if you’re doing a bar run that’s starting at 10 or 11am - the starting point may not serve up as much beer as those later stops.

For example, I’ve worked on a number of poker runs where they had local service shops as sponsors. A bike shop may or may not be a suitable poker run stop, it all depends on the specifics of the location and what they have to offer your riders. I’m a big believer that any poker run stop should have something of interest to those participating. Stops certainly don’t have to all be bars or restaurants, parks and cool riding destinations are ideal poker run stops. It also works nicely for both riders and the other stops, if they are not expected to spend a lot of time at every locations. However, I don’t think you should simply route all of your riders through a stop where they simply get off their bike, get their card stamped, and then ride on. The ride should be fun and interesting, not simply a race around town. One of our favorite riding destinations (and certainly a strong supporter of Thunder Roads, as well) is Bear’s Vintage Metal Works in Ravenna. They not only have a cool retail shop, but they have a vintage Harley themed museum as well. Lots of stuff Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO

You can always add some excitement to just about any stop - the key is to make it interesting but practical. For instance, a really great shot special or giving away free alcohol at a stop - doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense. For a variety of legal, liability, and logistical reasons - that doesn’t make sense for a stop on the run. Nor does inviting riders to oil wrestle at a stop - don’t laugh, I’ve seen it. Needless to say, but the folks that lubed up and wrestled at stop #2 - didn’t make it through to the rest of the ride. However, a bikini bike wash is a fun thing that can be held just about anywhere and doesn’t necessarily involve getting riders wet. A service shop might also free dyno runs as folks come through. Obviously they can’t run everyone through - but the shop could offer certificates for others to come back. This is a GREAT way to showcase the shop and get riders back in. When you identify potential locations, it’s important to meet with the venue as soon as possible. You need to let them know what you are doing and what your expectations are of them. You will need to confirm that the date is available and that they are interested in having you come by.

We will talk about sponsors in more depth later, but obviously the are a consideration in determining a route. Without a doubt, all of your stops should be sponsors and your primary sponsors should be stops - if at all possible. As you begin planning your route, you should start by identifying the sponsors and their locations. You should also consider the practicality bringing the ride through the locations and their appeal to your riders as stops.

to see and a cool poker run stop.

Assumptions are rarely a good idea and never when it comes to planning an event. NEVER assume anything when it comes to your stops. Starting from the simple question of whether they want you there and will they support your event. If it’s a good location and potential partner - but not necessarily already involved, you should go into sales mode. Sell them on your event. Sell them on your cause and sell them on you as an event organizer. Go over every detail with them and make sure that they realize that you are running a well executed event. As a motorcycle promoter and through my involvement with Thunder Roads, I’ve worked with hundreds of different venues in regards to hosting events and rides. I’ve heard countless horror stories about poorly planned events - but I am still amazed at how often people tell me of groups simply showing up unannounced at a location on an “organized” ride. “We get groups coming through all the time, and I just wish they would call ahead and let us know!” commented Bear, from Bear’s in Ravenna. “The most frustrating thing is when a run comes through on a day we aren’t even open! Our hours vary throughout the year, including our Sunday hours. And every year, we get rides coming out on Sundays when we are closed. Just call us!” Starting with the initial notification and a well thought-out plan, a venue will appreciate and respect your event much more if you take the proper steps to work with them. A popular biker

bar or riding destination may get approached by dozens of new groups every year asking them to host a stop. If you start off on the right foot, you will find that these venues can become more then simply stops - they can become partners. Tony Allison, owner of The Villa in Huber Heights, welcomes all riders - but he can really roll out the red carpet for rides that help promote his popular biker stop. “We can do a lot of things, especially with our outdoor bar. If they make us the ending stop and have the riders - I’ll roast a pig or put something out there for them.” As an event organizer, you need to recognize that this is a business for most of the locations. Regardless of your cause or how passionate you are - it has to make good business sense for the owner of the bar or restaurant. Despite all the “scary biker” stereotypes you hear, the word is out - and people have realized that bikers have big hearts. We will actively support many causes and help out when we can, so virtually every charity under the sun has some sort of riding event. Local charities, needy families, and even major international organizations such as the Red Cross all come knocking on the door of popular biker hang outs asking for support or to host a ride. In a past life, I ran several popular restaurant / bars; and I couldn’t even keep track of the number of people that came by asking for support. If you recognize this going in and take a proactive sales approach to your event, you will be much more successful. Here are some tips to pitching your event to a stop: Call ahead and schedule a convenient time to stop by and present your event. Don’t simply show up and expect them to stop what they are doing. Don’t ever stop by a restaurant or bar during their peak hours and ask to speak with a manager or owner. (It’s disrespectful and even if they say it’s ok - it’s not.) Have an organized, thought out presentation prepared. This could include a list of other sponsors, pictures from last year’s event, and a simple sheet outlining the event (a mock-up / preview of the event flyer works great!) Have a detailed plan on how you will market / promote your ride. Clearly present your expectations and what you would like their contribution to be. Spell it out with several options in terms of participation. If you take a realistic, practical approach with these suggestions - you should set yourself apart from everyone else that is asking for assistance or wanting to bring their ride through. So, what is fair to expect in return?

just .50 or $1 - it’s a slap in the face to your event and the riders coming through. But you would be amazed at how often it happens..” according to Youngstown area promoter, Hairy George. An involved bar or restaurant should also consider some sort of food special for riders - or simply putting out something complimentary. In many cases, having hot dogs and chili is a great option. It’s quick, easy, and very popular. If a bar or restaurant has a hundred riders coming through - they don’t want to get bogged down with a bunch of menu orders. And riders don’t want to get stuck waiting for their food while everyone else takes off for the next stop. Venues may choose to offer free food in order to get riders to spend more time at their stop. In many cases they can turn to their own suppliers to donate product which they can then offer to you. In return you help promote their stop and possibly the company that donated the product.

Things to Note regarding Stop Logistics:

• Avoid cross traffic stops whenever possible.

• Advise local municipalities / law enforcement of each stop and your overall route. (More to follow on this.) • Each checkpoint should have some means of communicating with the event chair and other stops in case of questions or emergency. • Confirm that adequate restroom facilities are available at each location (port-a-potties if needed). • Have one designated contact at each location and make certain that they are on-site for the event. • Confirm that supplies and all necessary materials are prepared for each stop and on site, the day before or morning of. • The route and all stops should be pre-rode at least 3 times, including at least one ride through the day before or morning of the event. • Have someone in the lot to direct bikes to where they should park, especially on larger rides.

At the absolute minimum, a location should commit to being open and properly staffed for your event. They should also commit to assisting with the promotion of the event - hanging posters and handing out flyers. They should also commit to not gauging your riders. “You need to make sure that your stops don’t jack up their prices as your riders come through. Even if they raise the prices by 98

Dayton Run Sept 2011

I strongly believe that every stop should contribute something to support a charity ride coming through, but that contribution needs to be practical in terms of the return they receive business wise. You cannot expect businesses to simply donate of themselves because of the worthiness of your cause. Some will, but it is not always practical to run a business that way - especially when you consider how many people ask this of them. Don’t dismay, though, the key to getting venues and other sponsors to support your event is to build a clear marketing plan. Capitalize on the promotional value of your event and offer sponsors the opportunity to share in the exposure you will generate. This is a winwin for everyone. You are creating real business value for sponsors and promoting your event at the same time.

As you build this marketing plan and consider the contributions you might ask of your stops, you certainly need to be realistic in terms of your event expectations. I just heard a story from one of our dealerships about an event they helped host last year. “The women seemed very organized, but clearly wasn’t a rider. She kept on telling us that she had 250 riders going on the run - which was coming to our dealership. So, we planned accordingly. We scheduled extra staff, roped off a section of the parking lot, and brought in a catering company to offer com-

plimentary food to the riders. It was for a good cause and we wanted to put on a good show for the dealerships - to these 250 riders, “ the Marketing Director related. “Looking back, though, we should have questioned why she was so specific as to the number of riders. It was always 250 when she spoke. Never less, never more.”

these outside businesses. You need to create an event and plan that is beneficial to all involved.

“Well, the event came and we had everything ready. Unfortunately, though, there was not a single rider. It turns out that she had printed 250 cards for the event, which she then handed out at some bike nights earlier in the year. She simply assumed that everyone would come. Her own organization was not a motorcycle based group - so it had no riders of its own and they had no real understanding of how these events work.” “We spent a lot of money on that morning, and we really fed our customers well that day - but it was a total loss in terms of the event. We chalked it all up as a hard learned lesson in terms of event planning.” She lamented, “Going forward I am much more skeptical of those that approach us and we assume that they know nothing about in terms of event planning. We need to do it all ourselves.” That’s obviously an extreme example, but it highlights the challenges that events such as poker runs present to a host stop. It’s an investment for these businesses and in most cases, especially with the larger stops, someone is going to be held accountable for the financial results of their contribution - in terms of dollars, time, and other resources. Never forget that as you deal with

The real challenge of orchestrating a successful Poker Run is creating a positive relationship between the multitude of parties that you may find yourself working with as you plan and execute your event. Even on the most basic poker run, planning may involve: starting and ending destination venues, a charity organization and all of their volunteers / supporters, sponsors, riders, stops along the way (more businesses and organizations - and all of their people), law enforcement, multiple municipalities, media, local riding clubs that wish to participate, and the list can go on. A large part of your success depends upon your ability to balance the needs of everyone involved and making them all happy! Good Luck! Sly hill showdown

In David’s words, “Approaching this years commemorative piece was highly influenced by my March

Daytona release. As I did earlier in the year, I wanted to portray some unusual moment that may happen during the course of the Rally. In this case, I chose the depiction of a classic hot rod interacting with one of the largest growing segments of the riding community, a woman. Last year, I followed 3 of the coolest Rat Rods out to the Buffalo Chip, and intrigued with what these guys had done with their cars, I realized that they were amazingly similar to the custom bike builders I know. As an artist, I am always looking for a unique angle, so I decided to put them together, way outside the fray of the huge crowds on Main Street. They are on Sly Hill Road, just underneath the Sly H ill Sturgis sign that we all have come to know and love. I hope you enjoy this years commemorative.”

The Rescue Inn is a non-profit, foster-based rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in need. We are run by a dedicated group of individuals who are passionate about our four-legged friends. It takes a village to save a dog and to support that dog on its journey to a forever home. We promote responsible animal ownership and provide medical treatment, foster care and training to unwanted, abandoned, lost or surrendered animals. We place those animals into loving and permanent homes. Our animals are spayed/neutered, receive appropriate veterinary care and are placed into a safe, secure foster home while waiting for their permanent home. We also strive to work with other area shelters and rescues to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to enhance our rescue mission.

ATV Motocross 101:

First Trip to the Track By Seth Fargher ATV.com

said, really any Sport ATV that you feel comfortable on will be sufficient for giving motocross a try.

So you’ve seen pictures of the top racers in magazines and read all about ATV motocross over the Internet, but to this point, you’ve restricted your ATV riding to the pasture, the trails, or maybe the occasional trip to the dunes. Yes, racing, jumping, and roosting around a motocross track looks like a good time, but it takes a whole different kind of person to actually get out there and do it, right? While your apprehension has merit, it might not be as difficult as you’d think to translate your riding from the trails to the track. I’m not talking about racing, but merely getting out on a motocross track to burn some laps and try out this alternative, and incredibly fun, format of ATV riding. Equipment One of the biggest reasons people give for avoiding the motocross track is that they don’t have the right equipment. Either their ATV isn’t sporty enough or the stock components are unsuitable for the rigors of motocross. Depending on the particular ATV you ride, I might agree with you if you were racing. However, since we’re talking about just getting out and having some fun on a motocross track, virtually any Sport ATV will be sufficient, even in stock form. Just about any of the current production Sport ATVs will be sufficient with the 450cc class machines being the obvious choice. Power-toweight ratio is what ultimately makes a great motocross ATV, so the lighter Sport ATVs are going to be the best choice. That being 112

Some more good news is that you really don’t need any special equipment just to practice on a motocross track. While nearly all tracks require ATVs to make use of a tether cord kill switch and nerf bars on race day, most don’t require any special equipment for practice. Lower profile 18-inch tires will come in handy as you improve your skills and get more serious about motocross, but for our purposes the stock setup on just about any machine will be fine. To play it safe, you can check with the track to make sure they don’t require any special equipment for practice only, but if the track is open to quads, you more than likely you can run what ya brung! Most manufacturers provide a standard pre-ride checklist that includes things like checking the oil, air filter and tire pressure. I would pay extra attention to making sure the air filter is clean and properly oiled. Also make sure all of the wheel lug nuts are tight. Losing a wheel or having your engine cut out over a jump because it sucked in sand is a bad deal for anyone, especially someone trying motocross for the first time. These few precautions will help lessen the chance of equipment failure and enhance your first motocross experience. Location Depending on where you live in the country, finding a motocross track might be your biggest challenge. Some states are more ATV friendly than others and unfortunately, our two-wheeled friends have gone to great lengths to keep ATVs off many exciting and popular tracks around the country. However, many OHV areas and off-road complexes still cater to the ATV crowd and if you look hard enough, you should be able to find a motocross track that allows ATVs within a few hours drive of your home. Again, the search will largely depend on your immediate geographical area. I would begin by stopping by your local powersports dealership. Undoubtedly these guys will know of any tracks in the immediate area and if that fails, Google is where we find seemingly everything these days. I would begin by searching for motocross tracks in your state and then contact them directly or

visit their websites to see if they allow quads and when. While some motocross tracks are not so quad friendly, many of Thunder Roads Ohio is them (our favorite ones) pleased to offer a listing of still believe in supporting tracks in our Biker Friendly Directory, as well as listings the sport and will often from our friends at CRA times have ATV-specific and other sponsoring practice days. These be surprised at some of the are usually the best placprograms they have. es to start because most ATV-specific tracks are fairly tame with no large jumps. While experienced motocross riders tend to find these tracks a little mellow, they are great for beginners because you don’t have to worry about sharp edges, steep jump faces and large doubles. OHV parks are another place to find excellent, entry-level motocross tracks. Different from motocross complexes, many off-road parks offer trail riding, rock crawling and a host of other off-road experiences. Because these parks tend to cater to a wide range of users, if they feature a motocross track, my experiences has been that they are usually pretty tame. For one, the facility has a lot more to do than focus on maintaining the motocross track. Secondly, facilities like this want to appeal to a wider ranger of users and skill levels. For that reason, most motocross tracks in big off-road parks and complexes tend to lean toward the tamer side.

Safety Less is not always more and when it comes to safety, I’m going to say better safe than sorry. At minimum, the standard helmet, gloves, goggles, over the ankle boots, protective pants, and long sleeve shirt should be worn. Not all motocross racers wear chest protectors or roost deflectors because they can feel somewhat restrictive; however, for your first time on a motocross track I highly recommend one. While the goal is not to crash, when you start working towards jumping the risk factor increases and a chest protector can save you from broken ribs in the event you gut check the handlebars or happen to fall off the ATV. I would also recommend a mouthpiece. Some people probably think that’s overkill, but if you’re going to be attempting jumps for the first time, it only takes hitting your jaw or mouth on the handlebars once to leave a lasting impression. A 99-cent mouth guard is a lot cheaper (and less painful) than hundreds or thousands of dollars in dental work. Believe me…I know. Lastly, I strongly recommend outfitting your goggles with several tear-off lenses to ensure you’re vision is always clear. While you’re not going to be racing anyone, there will likely be other people on the track and most motocross tracks I’ve ridden have been heavily watered. Poor visibility from a splash of mud or roost from another rider is the last thing you need while navigating a motocross track for the first time. On Track Rather than just pinning it down the start straight, it’s important to get acquainted with a track before you start going wide open. If you’re not familiar with jumping, a motocross track is going to be a very new experience. Use your first few laps to go out and familiarize yourself with the track layout and the feel of the obstacles. Because things like jumps and whoop sections on motocross tracks are man made, they can be very different than the ones that develop naturally in the dunes or on the trails. Jumping is without a doubt one of the most thrilling yet intimidating aspects of riding on a motocross track. It’s important to ride within your abilities and not attempt things like large tabletops, step ups or doubles until you feel comfortable in the air over smaller jumps. Tabletops are a great way to get familiarized with being in the air and gradually work up to jumping higher and farther. When it comes to doubles, different people have different schools of thought. One method is to find someone who is comfortable jumping a particular double and pace that person to match speed. That will allow you to know how fast you’ll need to be going to clear the jump safely. Another method is to gradually work towards clearing a double by jumping the first one and rolling the second. Gradually increase your speed until you are landing almost at the base of the second jump. That will give you an idea of how much you’ll need to increase your speed to 114

Though your track shouldn’t be this crowded, you may have to make room for other riders. It’s a good idea to move aside for faster riders. Photo - Mansfield Turkey Run, CRA by Erin Lambright

successfully downside the second jump. When it comes to jumping or really any aspect of motocross, the name of the game is ride within your ability. Spend lots of time on the track and gradually work up to doing the bigger tabletops and doubles. Keep in mind there are other people on the track of varying skill levels. If practice sessions are broken up by skill level, make sure you go out with the beginner group. Your buddies at school might be impressed if you tell them you practiced with the pros, but if you’re out their rolling the jumps and not moving at the same pace as the other people on the track, you’re risking danger to others as well as yourself. If it’s open practice, meaning anyone on any machine or skill level is allowed on the track, keep a watchful eye out for others. If you can hear someone behind you and you’re moving slower, veer to the side or pull off the track and let faster riders pass. It’s good etiquette and it gives everyone the opportunity to have the same great experience of riding motocross. With that, hopefully we’ve silenced your fears about giving motocross a try and given you the tools to find a track near you as well as a few tips to help you get out and burn some laps. Ride safe, ride smart, and have fun!

How to Prevent (and if that doesn’t work.. Repair)

Cross Threaded Fasteners!

From Goldwingdocs.com Cross-threading is more than just an annoyance - cross-threading a fastener can cause serious, expensive damage to your motorcycle! Cross thread something like a spark plug into the soft aluminum head (very easy to do!) and you will be in for a world of hurt trying to fix it. Even cross-threading everyday fasteners like ordinary nuts and bolts can do damage. What is cross-threading? It means the threads on the male part of a rotating fastener aren’t correctly lined up with the female part of the fastener. It’s usually caused when one of the parts of the fastener is slightly tilted when it is tightened. Instead of the lands and grooves of the threads lining up and sliding along one another, the threads cut across one another, causing damage. The more it’s forced, the more damage occurs, to the point where the fastener becomes “stripped” - the threads are so damaged, that the fastener will no longer tighten correctly. (Stripping a fastener can also occur when it is tightened beyond design limits, causing the threads to break - this is why you should use a torque wrench!) Spark plugs are infamous for cross-threading. The fork tube covers (wide, thin threads) are also easily cross-threaded. The larger in diameter the fastener, and the finer the threads, the more susceptible the fastener is to cross-threading. Not to say that coarse (wide, more distant) threaded fasteners can’t be crossthreaded! You can even cross-thread the lid on a peanut butter jar if you try hard enough! You can detect a cross-threaded fastener usually because it “binds” as you turn it. Normally fasteners should rotate freely until they are fully tight. If the fastener starts to bind, or give resistance when it is only partway in, gently back it out, adjust the angle, and try again. If the bolt is torqued in even though you feel resistance, meaning it is crossthreaded, it will shave away metal on both the male and female parts of the fastener, weakening the threads:

How to prevent cross-threading So...how do you prevent this? Diligence and attention is always a good way. However, there is a very simple technique which I have used for many, many years. I don’t know that anyone taught it to me, I suspect I just figured it out on my own. However, it works on every threaded fastener, and I use it every single time I screw any fastener into place, even bottle caps and jar lids! It works every timeThe secret: Screw the fastener in place BACKWARD. That’s right, turn the fastener backwards instead of forward. If you normally twist the bolt clockwise to tighten it, instead twist it counter-clockwise. Do this until you hear/feel it click. This is the end of the male thread going past the end of the female thread. Once you feel this, you know the threads are perfectly aligned, and you can tighten the fastener normally.

If the fastener is torqued very tight while crossthreaded, the threads can fail completely, destroying the bolt, the nut, or both: Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

Taps (the long thin pieces) are used to cut threads in holes, and dies (the roundish pieces) are used to cut threads on rods. They are made of very hard, high-strength carbon steel. Normally taps and dies are used to cut threads in things that aren’t already threaded - i.e. you can drill a hole in some metal, then use a tap to create threads in the hole. Or you can take a metal rod, and use a die to make it into a threaded rod. However, they are also good for repairing damaged threads. You will need: - Tap and die of the correct size and thread pitch (this is important! Using the wrong size or pitch will destroy your fastener even more!) - Tapping lubrican Use the lubricant to lubricate the tap, die, bolt, hole, everything. Not using lubricant is a good way to destroy your tap/die and quickly destroy the threads in the piece you are trying to repair. Gently insert the tap into the hole or the nut, and make sure the threads are lined up correctly. This is not the time to cross-thread again, because the tap will very easily cut across the existing threads! Gently twist the tap in and let the threads guide it. As it encounters damaged threads, you will feel a very gentle resistance. It’s ok to keep pushing through.

When you’ve moved past the damage, gently turn it backwards until it comes free. A quick warning: It’s entirely possible that you will cut damaged metal threads away from the fastener with the tap or die as you twist it. Particularly on spark plug holes, you don’t want this metal falling into the engine! Use plenty of tapping lubricant, and every time you push through any resistance, back the tap out and clean any metal off before reapplying lubricant and starting again.

Note from the Editor This article was contributed by our friends at Goldwingdocs. com. This is a great website with an incredible forum for riders. While it’s certainly aimed at Honda - Goldwing riders, it has a wealth of information. We are huge fans of the website.

For the other end, you want to thread the die onto the end of the bolt, again being very careful not to cross-thread it as you twist it on. The same procedure goes as for the tap - let the threads guide it into place, and push it through gentle resistance to repair the threads.

f you’re wondering how to find tattoo ideas, chances are you already want something a bit more unique and interesting than a traditional and mass produced design. If you’ve ever stepped foot into a tattoo shop, you’ll find most have walls with framed tattoo flash to help inspire and provide choices for your body art. 122

However, some people want a tattoo that offers more sentiment to them, especially since they’ll be wearing it for a lifetime. If you find yourself in need of finding the perfect tattoo idea, it helps to first understand the most popular tattoo styles so that you can begin to either work with your artist and brainstorm ideas. Types of Tattoo Art Styles Tattooing is an art form. Rather than using paper or any other medium for a canvas, a tattoo artist uses your skin. Some of best tattoo artists are those that have actually studied art and familiarized themselves on all different types prior to becoming a tattoo artist. While many artists have a niche, or rather a special or distinct style they have mastered, others excel in all tattoo art styles, simply from their mere talent to the diligent practice and exposure to various forms. Some of the most popular forms of tattoo art styles include: Asian, Biomechanical, Old School/Traditional, black and grey, and tribal designs.

Fellows, Jimmy ctric le Akron E kron A Tattoo,

Asian Loved throughout the world for their colorful and graceful beauty and designs, Asian tattoos include language symbols to full body art depictions of koi fish, cherry blossom tattoos and dragon and tiger tattoos. Geisha women are yet another popular tattoo design if you want to honor the pin-ups of the Eastern world.

Biomechanical For the hardcore sci-fi or industrial types, biomechanical tattoos are a tough choice. Paired with ripped apart flesh or robotic parts, these types of tattoos look best when placed on muscled parts of the body. Think of your legs, arms, or even a neck tattoo and then get inspired by fantastical machinery for a tattoo design. You may choose to draw the design yourself or shop around for a skilled biomechanical tattoo artist.

Traditional Old School Traditional and old school tattoos are often used interchangeably and their designs include eagle tattoos, pinup girls, ships and anchors. From memorial pieces to love and glory tattoos, one of the most popular artists that specialized in creating this type of tattoo style is Norman Keith Collins, also known as Sailor Jerry. You can read more about Sailor Jerry and explore the history of old school tattoos here.

Black and Grey Fine line black and grey tattoos originated in the Chicano communities of East LA during the 1970s. The use of a single-needle created fine lines with smooth and subtle shading in varied shades of black and grey. Once infamous amongst prison mates, today these artsy sketches include roses, memorial and portrait pieces.

Tribal Depicting rich culture and meaning from Native American history, tribal tattoos became a very popular armband piece in the 1990s and lost much of their significance in the process. True tribal tattoos tattooing practices are often considered rites of passage and may involve monks, blessings, and more painful hand-poked tattooing methods. Rich in spiritual meaning, tribal tattoos mark one part of life to the next. continued... Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

If you already know the tattoo style you like, you can narrow your choices and begin to focus on that genre, eliminating all the other ideas that may otherwise overwhelm you during this important decision-making process.

Books, Art and Nature

Get Inspired with Styles

Do you want a portrait tattoo of your mother? How about framing it with her favorite flowers? Tattoo magazines and books provide plenty of visual inspiration for design ideas.

Narrowing your favorite art style down to just a few can be helpful in many ways. Once you’ve determined your general likes and dislikes you can begin to add sentiment to your general tattoo idea. Would you like a verse or a special phrase tattoo? Look to your favorite books for quotes and ideas. Biblical tattoos often include a few verses paired with either crosses or angel wings. Do you love the look of Old School designs? Traditional tattoo choices from this category include anchors, pin-ups and ships. How about a tribal tattoo? While tribal tattoos reached their height of popularity during the over-crazed armband fad, those commonplace designs aren’t actually considered authentic tribal pieces. For a true tribal tattoo, you’ll need to do some homework and find an artist that specializes in authentic tribal tattooing. Remember, some tribes frown upon anyone wearing their symbols as tattoos unless they’re part of the tribes, as it can also be considered very disrespectful . To prevent regret, think long and hard about any form of cultural tattoos to make sure they represent your own identity, rather than just a fashion statement.

124

Books, art and nature walks can all help you find tattoo ideas. Keep your eyes and mind open and explore different channels of various art forms. Television, movie stars and pop culture also provide endless exposure to tattoo styles and themes.

Remember, tattoo artists are usually always willing to add their creative counsel to your design ideas. Spend some time working with an artist and have them draw up a few pieces once you’re narrowed your style and selection down. While some artists charge a design fee for this process (which is later deducted from your tattoo cost) others will gladly create something custom without adding any extra expense.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead can be the most difficult part of choosing your tattoo idea. If you’re the type who tattoos on a whim, you may be better off just learning your favorite style and then just going with it. You can also intertwine all different tattoo art styles rather than stick to one basic theme. Lastly, write it down. Get a journal and keep it handy whenever a tattoo design strikes your fancy. Record the details, style and shape and refer to your journal as needed to find tattoo ideas. Whether you detail the most magnificiant tattoo you spied on the subway, or simply write down your favorite verse, when the tattoo itch strikes, a journal will ensure you’re prepared with a meaningful tattoo idea, which can then be translated into custom body art.

A Great (Lake) Week

s

It’

If you live in the Midwest, you like me wait and wait for riding season to begin. I try to ride all year when possible, but no matter how tough you think you are, you aren’t riding in feet of snow and 10 below. As I write this for the May Edition of TRO, it’s still mid April. Last weekend it was above 60 degrees and we had a great ride, and earlier this week it peaked above 80 for one day. What screwy weather patterns we have now a days. I remember as a kid growing up in the 70’s we had a pretty standard weather pattern and seasons. Any more who knows from one month to the next? We have a club ride planned this weekend, and of course the high is supposed to be 50, and it will dip into the high 30’s when the sun goes down. Wonderful. I figured this month I’d get on Thunder Zone. This year we will board with promoting Ohio Bike be starting off at the Comfort Inn Week in Sandusky Ohio May on Milan (Route 250). I know Moonshine (left) with Jesse 31st through June 9th 2013. If the TRO gang will put together a James Dupree (center) you’re reading this in Ohio or bunch of fun for you all. Last year being unemployed at everything any biker could want. Freedom from choice G

reetings and warm weather salutations my rider friends! I hope this upcoming season brings all of you the greatest happiness and freedom of the open road that you have ever experienced. It is almost a necessity of modern life to be able to unplug and have the freedom to ‘de-stress’ your life: It can be taking a road trip to a place you never been before or as simple as splitting some logs on a sunny day. Enjoy every single moment of freedom you can get your hands on! Soak it in, relish it, cherish it, remember it and teach it. As I write this there are groups of individuals at the local, state and federal level who are spending every waking moment creating new ways to control your freedoms and deny you your civil rights promised to you under the Bill of Rights. Before I get to my foundation statements by our founding fathers I want to introduce you to a group of men who were true visionaries of their time. They were considered outsiders, too obtuse to understand the dynamics of modern culture and politics. This group of men were from my old stomping grounds of Akron and the leader graduated from Kent State; I guarantee that you have heard some of his creations. Of course I am

talking about, DEVO. The song that was easily 30 years ahead of its time is ‘Freedom of Choice’ and the lyrics that defines our time is this: ‘Freedom of choice, is what you got. Freedom from choice, is what you want’. Our elected officials believe that the majority of people who vote them into office wish to waive their freedoms under the Bill of Rights and allow them to make the choices for them. The politician now makes laws to give you freedom from choice, because you are not smart enough, wealthy enough, pretty enough to intelligently make your own choices for your own life. The Founding Fathers knew of the evils of an overreaching government and how it grows and wishes to control the nongovernmental people. Knowing that government IS the problem they created the Bill of Rights: A listing of individual rights that the government WILL NOT and CANNOT take away from you. Every law that is passed is weighed against whether it violates these individual rights. If it is in violation then the law is struck down. With this in mind let’s take the two most ‘hot button’ issue of our time: Abortion and Gun Control. There is no mention of the process of abortion in the Bill of Rights. Abortion was legally deemed to be found in the definition of the right of personal privacy under the Fourteenth Amendment. The supporters of this legal definition fight toothand-nail for a woman’s right to choose up through the final moments before birth. Please note that I am only commenting on the machinery of the law and how it is currently manifested in order to draw a distinction. What I am trying to get at is a procedure was assumed to fall under the right to privacy and the politicians will spare no expense supporting this law and fighting any type of ‘abortion control’. The Second Amendment is the most simply stated amendment in the entire Bill of Rights: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep

and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. For many elitist politicians who have a problem with reading simple English I will translate: The government needs an Army, Navy, Air Force for national defense, but even so,

same 17 round magazine, MY RIGHTS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. If only our politicians put the same effort and time into defending our firearms rights as they do to defending other rights? Because the 2nd Amendment is not about hunting and the politicians know it. They want to control your freedom of self-defense and promise you safety. Remember what Benjamin Franklin said about that; ‘Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety’. Instead of enacting new gun laws how about we start arresting criminals who attempt to buy guns? We have a background check system, if someone fails because of a record, arrest them. If someone fails because of a mental health record, arrest them. Don’t solve a criminal problem on the backs of the law abiding.

THE FREE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES CAN OWN AND CARRY AS MANY FIREARMS AS THEY SEE FIT AND THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT MODIFY THIS AGREEMENT, EVER!! (One of my favorite explanations of this is a Youtube video by Penn & Teller, check it out) Since 1973 I have lost count of how many times that a local, state, federal government has infringed on your 2A rights. It seems that any slack-jaw politician loves to trample the victims in order to enact new guncontrol laws. Every time they say the same things; ‘We have to act’, ‘we have to save lives’, ‘too many guns on our streets’. But yet the bad guys, by their very nature, don’t follow the laws. Only good people are disarmed by gun control. If I am a law abiding citizen and I want to have the latest AR or AK style rifle with a standard capacity magazine (which holds 30 rounds) MY RIGHTS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. If I am a law abiding citizen and I want to have the latest pistol that my local cops carry, with the

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

So to bring this full circle; Freedom of choice means being able to buy a 40oz sugary soda or a modern sporting rifle that looks all big and scary, or a bike that has the speed of an SR-71. If we act and live like we don’t give a damn then the MAN will surely step in and tell you when and how to live your life. Time is running out on the freedom we all grew up with. If football is a game of inches then freedom is an ideology of individuals. Renew your freedom of choice! Demand that the government not infringe on your Civil Right of firearms ownership and never give up! Call, Write, Email, Fax. Let your voices be heard!

An engineer dies and goes to hell. He’s hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly. The moving walkway motor jammed, so he unjams it. People can get from place to place more easily. The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the Satellite dish and now they get hundreds of high def channels, although they still cannot watch Breaking Bad on AMC. One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what’s up? The Devil says, “Things are great down here since you sent us an engineer.” “What?” says God. “An engineer? I didn’t send you one of those. That must have been a mistake. Send him upstairs immediately.” The Devil responds, “No way. We want to keep our engineer. We like him.” God demands, “If you don’t send him to me immediately, I’ll sue!” The Devil laughs. “Where are You going to get a lawyer?”

So the guy says, “Once I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang’s leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head but with hair all over his body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear. Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, ‘You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You’re all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!’” Impressed, St. Peter says, “Really? I can’t seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?” “Oh, about two minutes ago.”
