The riding community is always willing to step up and support a worthy cause - but sometimes it’s a challenge to separate the legitimate charities from the scams, or the organizations that are really working to help others as opposed to simply making themselves relevant. When it comes to veterans organizations it gets even more difficult to identify the worthy causes. As citizens we have an obligation to step up and show our appreciation and respect to those that have served and sacrificed for our nation. However, I want to make certain that my contribution makes a difference and helps those that are in need of assistance - and so should you! It has been especially frustrating lately as we see more and more folks getting behind promoters that have wrapped themselves up in the American flag or other charitable concepts in order to get your dollars. In a perfect world you might be able to assume that your purchase of the t-shirt promoting a veterans cause or the pin memorializing those that have sacrificed would generate at least something for those that are in need. In reality, there are no such guarantees even if the promoter claims it in their literature. When it comes to charitable causes - I’m especially sensitive to those relating to veterans. All around us - every day, we come into contact with veterans that are in need of assistance. Some having recently served may be in need of help transitioning back to a civilian life. Older veterans may need assistance more due to age then anything else, but we still have an obligation to help them. I recently lost my grandfather - a proud World War II veteran that served our nation in the Pacific. He spent most of his life refusing assistance and rarely took advantage of his veteran’s benefits because he considered it charity or a handout. In reality, though, such efforts are simply our nation and community attempting to repay a debt. We owe it to them for the sacrifices they made. I would call upon the riding community to become more vigilant in determining what causes we support. Just because it has a pink, blue, or red ribbon on it - we should not simply buy it thinking we are supporting whatever cause we associate with it. Never hesitate to ask questions. Legitimate charities will not take offense at this. In all reality, they lose the most when it comes to the scammers. From my viewpoint, the guy soliciting “donations to support” veterans but really subsidizing his bar tab or whatever else he spends the money on - is essentially stealing from those that are in need. And we need to stop allowing this to happen. Thank you, Derek Smith Publisher Thunder Roads Ohio

Here’s a shot from our ride to Lancaster and Hocking Hills area on Sunday, May 5th.
Editor’s Note At this year’s Easyriders Show in Columbus, we had the opportunity to meet Kim D who owns a fairly unique bike that has won a few trophies at the shows. We are planning a shoot for his bike, but in the mean time - Kim has done some traveling with his Thunder Roads Ohio shirt. And he’s been kind enough to send us some pictures. Look for Kim’s bike in an upcoming issue.
- Dave, Brandon, Tammy, and Dan (Oh, and a picture of my bike as well!)
Here’s a shot of us from the Blessing of the Bikes in Lima! - Andy Hubbard Greetings! Just finished my first issue of your magazine - Well Done! Bing an Old School Biker, everyday ride being a 1973 shovel, I really enjoyed the article “From the Back of the Bike” by Lady Nancy Beach! Although I enjoy riding with a gal who rides her own (if she knows what she’s doing) I find it very refreshing to know that there is a lady out there that understands and enjoys the thunder and rumble of a vintage HarleyDavidson. I’ll bet Nancy does not need to be told what hand signals need to be used or when.
Hey Man! Just returned from Thailand last week, so touching base in regard to the shoot with my bike....rented a little scooter. Have about 1000 pics but attached a few I thought you’d get a kick out of. Might take it to Poland next week also. lol - Kim
Look forward to meeting Nancy and her ol-man on the highways. From what I can see from the picture, should we cross paths at a tavern, he and I will walk around each others ride a couple times. While we’re doing the same, a Harley owner dressed in shorts, sandals, and a $75 Harley shirt will ask “what year are your Sportsters and what’s this thing down here by the pipes?” Must admit I do have a wonder button on my handee bar. But I still like kicking her to life.
Just made it back to the states from Poland . And yes, my Thunder Roads shirt made the trip as well!
Tore out Nancy’s article and hung it on the wall here in the bike room for others to read.

As told by
The Iron Cowboy arrested and facing charges relating to his struggles. Tim went and spoke with the Judge directly, intervening on the veteran’s behalf. Ultimately, Tim was able to arrange for the veterans release and get him placed in a VA Center where he was able to receive counseling in a safe environment. The first thing that stands out about the Ghost Rider Foundation is that it’s a “hands-on” organization working directly with those they are attempting to assist. It’s not a giant organization sending money off to distant programs. Ghost Rider Foundation is local volunteers helping veterans right here in our own communities. Ghost Rider Foundation also works to support other groups such as Wags for Warriors serving vets.
The Ghost Rider Foundation
Over $17,000 was raised last year for the Ghost Rider Foundation through the raffle of a 2012 Switchback from South East H-D and donations at the 2012 (Harley) Ferrari Night. Wags 4 Warriors is an Ohio based organization that unites veterans suffering from PTSD or TBI with an appropriate dog, and to provide all of the training, equipment and support for the dog to become the veterans service dog at NO COST to the veteran. The ultimate goal is for the service dog to take away the struggle the veterans face with everyday.
This year’s Ferrari Night at South East Harley-Davidson (June 28 ) will be raising funds to help support the Ghost Rider Foundation - a legitimate 501(c)3 nonprofit charity that actively works to help veterans in our own communities dealing with PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The despair of living with PTSD or traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the saddest legacies of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And it’s shockingly common; more than 200,000 U.S. service members have been diagnosed with a brain injury in the last 10 years, according to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans (IAVA). Tens of thousands more suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder that’s considered chronic, meaning it may take years of therapy before they’re free of anxiety, depression, insomnia, flashbacks and nightmares. The result: a suicide rate so high–and still rising–that it has the government and military scrambling for preventive measures. More than 6,500 veterans commit suicide every year—more than the total number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined since the wars began. According to the Veterans Administration, 18 veterans commit suicide every day—or one every 80 minutes. Think of it this way: for every veteran killed by enemy combatants, 25 veterans take their own lives. On January 6, 2008 a 3-tour Operation Iraqi Freedom Marine Veteran committed suicide. His death was ruled the direct result of PTSD, for which he was being treated. He could play only one song on his guitar - Ghost Rider. This incident and the realization that other loved ones close by were suffering from PTSD - lead to the formation of the Ghost Rider Foundation.

TOP FUEL HARLEY
I made the trek on Saturday May 18th to Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk for the second of three days of the Cavalcade of Stars. Partially due to the incredible weather, the crowd set a single event attendance record at over 48,000. I visited Chris’ pit area several times while he signed autographed copies of the April issue of Thunder Roads Ohio that featured his bike on the cover. The best part was the number of young fans that stopped by, this is an incredible family event. Chris managed to qualify third running a 6.296 sec @ 205. 4 MPH despite “putting out a hole.” As Chris explains, this is when you have too much fuel in one cylinder and it flames out. On Sunday, during the main event, Chris won a very close race over Steve Dorn by running at over 227 MPH, but lost the next due to a clutch problem to eventual champion Tommy Grimes. If you get a chance, make the trip, it really is a great venue. Summit is doing a nice job integrating the bike classes into these events. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

trike is essentially any three wheeled vehicle. There are motorcycle trikes, motor car trikes, and a growing number of vehicles that seem to blur the lines between the two. There are even “trikes” that in all reality have four wheels. For the sake of this discussion, we are going to discuss trikes that “look like” motorcycles. Obviously that’s a purely subjective approach, but there are simply too many variations out there and we need to restrict things a little. For years, a “three wheeled motorcycle” meant a motorcycle with a side car on it. Then in 1984, a backyard entrepreneur named John Lehman in Alberta, Canada adapted a Honda for his wife to ride. Replacing the standard one wheel rear on his classic Honda with a wider backside sporting and axle and pair of wheels allowed John’s wife to more easily handle the bike. The following year John built another motorcycle conversion and decided to go into business building custom three-wheelers. At first he worked only on Hondas, but in 1991 he converted his first Harley. Lehman Trikes went public in 2001, and a year later it opened an assembly plant in Spearfish, South Dakota. Twelve years later, trikes are a major part of the riding community and their sales have outperformed more traditional motorcycles. According to Ken Hines, President and CEO of Lehman Trikes, trike sales have increased 15-30% each year since the recession hit. This contrasts strongly with overall motorcycle sales numbers which have remained mostly flat or dropped during the same period. (1)
For many, Trikes offer the opportunity to ride when they might not otherwise be able to do it physically. Thunder Roads spoke with D.A. Schiets from Schiets Motorsports in Fremont, Ohio. “Trikes offer a tremendous opportunity to extend the riding experience for those getting older and facing physical limitations that might otherwise keep them from riding.”
Clark Boatman, Kansas OH
While at Schiets, we ran into Clark Boatman from Kansas, Ohio. He was putting his newly converted Yamaha Majesty through the paces in the Schiets practice area. Clark is 74 years young and clearly enjoyed riding his Yamaha with the bolt on Voyager™ kit.
“It’s been about 20 years since I last had a motorcycle,” Clark told Thunder Roads. 16
Caleb Balogh, Sales Supervisor at Mad River HarleyDavidson™ in Sandusky, told Thunder Roads that Trikes aren’t just for the older riders or those with physical limitations. “More and more traditional riders are looking at Trikes for a variety of reasons.” Some consider Trikes simply a safer way to ride. Still others are looking for something with more of a presence on the road - possibly with more comfort and storage for long distances. Whatever the reason, there are essentially three different approaches you can take to getting a trike. The first and easiest method is the OEM route, or buying a trike that was manufactured in the factory. In the auto world, OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer.” This is the easiest method because it’s just like buying any other motorcycle from a dealer who purchases his units directly from the manufacturer. Plus, these units come usually come with a factory warranty. The first of the technically “OEM” trikes was launched in 2007, when Canada’s Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) introduced the Can-Am Spyder. The first “spy photos” of this unique vehicle - with two wheels up front and a single in the rear - was captured in 2006 near Deal’s Gap, North Carolina on the “Tail of the Dragon” route. The radical “two plus one” design caused such a stir, that Jay Leno took delivery of the first one for his own personal collection.
“The 2013 Can-Am RS”
“The 2013 Can-Am RT”
The Can-Am Spyder Roadsters has long come in two basic styles - the RS (Sport) and the RT (Touring). For 2013, BRP has added a more nimble “Sport Touring” adaptation of their 3 wheeled vehicles. All versions are described as easier to steer then a

two-wheeler - with riders “turning” the handlebars rather then leaning. It’s important to understand that the Can-Am Spyders are an off-shoot of Bombardier Inc. a company with a long history of producing recreational vehicles other then motorcycles. The Spyders lineage includes Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Sea-Doo personal watercraft - and BRP doesn’t appear to be restrained by the traditional expectations of motorcycles. In fact, BRP has reported that over 25% of Spyder owners have never previously owned a motorcycle. (2) In 2009, Harley-Davidson ® introduced its first factory-built trike in the Tri Glide. These first Tri Glides were produced in partnership with Lehman. Then in 2011, Harley moved production in house and began producing an entirely Harley trike. Many believe that Harley’s decision to produce the Tri Glide legitimized trikes in the eyes of many traditional riders. Clearly their customers embraced the move, with Tri Glide sales growing by 11% in 2011 (vs. 5% for two wheelers) and more then double that in 2012. In fact, the Tri Glide is the sixth most popular model in the entire Harley lineup. (2)
The original Ural motorcycle design was based on WWII era BMW sidecar rigs used by the German army. Approximately 10,000 Urals (then known as M-72s) served in World War II. Those Urals were built in a Siberian factory east of the Ural Mountains, where modern Urals are produce to this day. The company appears to have stayed out of the technology race, with their traditional basic design. They have introduced on-demand sidecar drive on some models such as the go-anywhere Gear-Up model. Dale Kramer, with BMW Motorcycles of Cleveland - which sells the Urals as well, described his experience with them, “These are just fun motorcycles that get attention wherever they go. The sidecar is incredibly comfortable for the passenger, giving them a forward more active position to share the riding experience.” “The two wheel drive models are truly go-anywhere bikes handling dirt or snow. With the extra storage capacity - they are very practical motorcycles.” Harley-Davidson also produced side cars until 2011, but then ceased – possibly in favor of their newly introduced trikes.
The 2013 H-D Tri Glide in 110th Anniversary colors.
The second method of obtaining a trike is buying a factoryconverted trike from a company like Lehman Trikes. Since it’s launch in the mid ’80s, Lehman has concentrated on converting units from Honda and Harley-Davidson into trikes with a differential rear-end with internal solid axles, giving the swingarm a one-piece, reinforced design. In recent years, Lehman has expanded their standard conversions to include models from Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Victory.
Caleb Balogh, from Mad River, explains that “customers appreciate that the Tri Glide is all Harley.” Balogh also explained that OEM trikes have a clear advantage in terms of holding their value. “A Tri Glide is titled as a HarleyDavidson trike. Its value is based upon that. If you buy an Ultra Classic and add a conversion kit to it - you still have a titled Ultra. You’ve invested a lot in it - but it’s real value is determined primarily by how it’s actually titled.” Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
One type of motorcycle that is often left out of today’s trike discussions is the classic sidecar motorcycle, which have been around for ages. One company that has focused heavily on the traditional sidecar motorcycle is Russia’s Ural, named for that nation’s central mountain range. Ural motorcycles feature a flattwin engine that displaces 749 cc, and all of its sidecars are equipped with a trunk.
Schiets Motorsports is an active Lehman dealer, and D.A. Schiets believes they offer great value with their bikes. “We work with Lehman and like to keep a selection of new and used trikes in stock for people to consider. Generally we have new Kawasaki Storms and Honda VTX Trikes in stock - along with a selection of used bikes already converted.” “I’m always looking for nice, clean used motorcycles that we can then convert to trikes. We send them out to Lehman’s facility in Spearfish and they send them back to us

as complete conversions. I think that this is the most cost effective option for everyone and Lehman just does a great job... I’m kind of a stickler, especially when it comes to paint - and their paint jobs are flawless.” The last option for getting a trike is through an after-market conversion done at a local dealer, shop, or possibly in your own garage or shop. There are a number of quality manufacturers that produce kits designed specifically for certain motorcycles. For instance, Sporty’s Trikes and Bikes in Dayton specializes in Motor Trike conversions. Motor Trike offers complete conversion kits designed for specific makes and models.
Jon Floyd, owner of Iron Hogz, told Thunder Roads that “Trikes are the future.. the next big thing in custom builds.” The cover and calendar of this issue, in fact, feature a 2005 Road Glide Custom that Jon converted into a trike for a friend with very specific and specialized needs.
A 2012 Honda Goldwing Adventure Trike built by Sporty’s Trikes and Bikes, Dayton.
Jon Floyd and Herman Gonzalez with the Road Glide Custom Trike at Easyriders Columbus, 2011
Local independent shops also offer the opportunity to create unique conversions specific to your particular needs and vision. Iron Hogz Power Sports, in Lebanon, is an independent shop that is specializing more and more in custom trike conversions.
“Herman Gonzalez is an Air Force Veteran that lost one leg from the knee down while serving. Then he went in for surgery and contracted a staph infection that ended up costing him his other leg.” Jon explained. Herman was an avid rider that had made annual trips out to Sturgis, but he assumed that his riding days were over when he lost both legs. “I told him that when he was ready, I was going to build him a trike.”

If you are considering getting a trike or converting your current bike, these are just a few of the options that are available. Our recommendation is for you to follow up with any of the partners mentioned in this article or your local recommended shop for more information. Explore all your options, though, and make certain that you decide what you really are looking for. Some dealerships, such as Schiets Motorsports offer test rides of their Trikes and certain Harley-Davidson dealerships even have the Tri Glides available for rent. As D.A. Schiets told Thunder Roads, “We offer test rides on our trikes, so you can see what it’s really like.” As trikes become more and more popular, more and more options become available. It’s even more important that you work with a reputable, professional shop or dealership in order to ensure the best possible experience. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
june 2013
At this point in the legislative session our legislators are busy working on the Operating Budget for the year. Rep. Al Landis has submitted one of our issues to be included in the budget. He has included clarification on how motorcycles may be parked in parallel parking spaces. Last session the Transportation Budget allowed motorcycles to back into angled parking spaces. The current law makes no exceptions for motorcycles to park any differently than any other vehicle in a parallel space. Technically motorcycles are permitted to park parallel to the curb in a parallel spot, just like a car would. Rep. Landis has submitted verbiage that permits motorcycles to park perpendicular in a parallel space with either tire towards curb. It also permits more than one motorcycle to park in a non-metered parking space if space is available. We are also working on permitting non-audio hearing protection to be legal while operating a motor vehicle. Section 4511.84 of the Ohio Revised Code prohibits earphones or earplugs to be used by the operator of a motor vehicle. The law appears to be aimed at outlawing headphones for listening devices. There is no exception in the law for hearing protection. There was a case in Fulton County Ohio last September of a motorcycle rider being ticketed for wearing foam ear plugs while operating a motorcycle. This offense carries a 2 point penalty on the driver’s license. The “offender” is a CDL holder so the 2 points is a very big deal to him or anyone else found guilty of protecting their hearing with ear plugs. Rep. Landis brought this issue up as a possible Operations Budget issue. There was some debate about including this issue for a couple of reasons. The first reason was that it was not specifically a “budget” issue. The second reason was that motorcyclists could protect their hearing by wearing a full face helmet with a face shield. The decision was to not include the ear plug in the budget because of the debates. In the Fulton County ear plug case no judgment has been decided. An expert from the EAR Hearing Protection Company offered testimony that even with a full faced helmet; the noise level of wind was high enough to require hearing protection to protect the ears. The final ruling in Fulton County case could be critical in clarifying this issue. Rep. Green has submitted to Ohio’s law writing service (LSC) a bill to set up training for certified road guards in Ohio. We will work on this legislation, ear plugs, and increasing penalties for people who seriously injure or kill other motorists after the budget is complete. If you would like to discuss this person with me one on one my email address is legislativedirector@abate.com. My phone is 937987-2396. You could also attend an ABATE of Ohio, Inc. BOD meeting the second Saturday of the month. I will also be at June Jam this year. I usually end up around the fire discussing the issues with members. Come join in. I want to represent what the members of ABATE of Ohio want. I can only do that if I hear from you. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. 24

Does she like to ride? W
hen a job transfer landed her at FAA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Chelle Brisco (Free Spirit) looked for a way to make new friends and discovered Meetup, (www.meetup.com) an online website that puts people with similar interests together. The Aviation Safety Inspector joined the Meetup group known as The Hogs and Heroes Foundation (www.hogsheroesfoundation.com). The 501 (C) 3 charitable organization is a community of motorcycle riders that participates in fundraising events to support Public Safety, the U.S. Military and Wounded Warriors. There she made new friends and rekindled her interest in riding motorcycles.

line of duty, stands flag lines at funeral homes receiving remains of recently recovered Vietnam veterans, and occasionally participates in welcoming home troops from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. “I try to participate in at least one PGR mission each month”, she said. “Sometimes I can schedule a day off, but other times I have to take vacation to participate because ANC burials are always during the weekday. Riding to or from, and standing, sometimes for hours, in the heat, the cold, the rain & snow are small inconveniences compared to the sacrifices these troops and their families made. It is one small act I can do to show my appreciation.”, she says. While serving brunch to veterans at Annapolis Harley Davidson as a Hogs and Heroes volunteer, Free Spirit negotiated her new trike purchase. There she met Tracy Hoover from Truckin 4 Troops (http:// www.truckin4troops.com/) who introduced her to Brian Brashears. She discussed her design with Brian - something special - a patriotic theme. The second of three generations of female veterans, she wanted a trike that sent a message—one that captured her passion. Thanks to the work of Brian’s Premier Collision Center in Edgewater, the 56-year-old Air Force veteran and her ride are getting attention everywhere they go. Free Spirit’s new motorcycle features an all-encompassing American flag design that flows throughout the machine. To reflect her history as an avionics technician and aircraft mechanic in the Air Force, the tank is painted with two of the many aircraft she once performed maintenance on, a C-141 dropping paratroopers and an A-10 Warthog. The front fairing sports an eagle holding the POW-MIA flag in one claw, and a KIA-WIA flag in the other. Chelle says the Prisoners of War – Missing in Action flag is common, but the Killed in Action – Wounded in Action flag is rarely seen. Her funeral escorts and wounded warrior projects prompted the KIA-WIA tribute.

Above that, the windshield is coated with a decorative sunscreen featuring the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The crowning glory is the design at the back of the trike. Taking up almost the entire cargo panel stands an air-brushed portrait of Chelle with her mother and daughter, all military veterans. The composite portrait is made from 4 different pictures she provided the airbrush artist, Tim Lewis. He sketched these by free hand so realistically it looks like a snapshot. Behind them is the restored gate of ArlingtonNationalCemetery, which houses the memorial to Women in Military Service to America (WIMSA) (http://www.womensmemorial. org/). Chelle, her mother, and daughter are charter members of WIMSA. The trike is topped off with a Virginia special Armed Forces Veteran tag numbered “WIMSA”. She started riding when she was only 12 years old, on a cousin’s Honda 250. Later, while on active duty in the Air Force, she rode a 350 Honda daily to & from work on the cold swing shift in England. She learned motorcycle mechanics when her timing chain went out & she tore down the engine & rebuilt it herself. Because more than 20 years had passed since she last rode, Chelle took a motorcycle riding course & got her endorsement. She immediately bought a 1994 Harley Davidson Electra Glide with a Voyager trike kit installed. Two weeks later, she trailered it to Sturgis, S.D. for the Black Hills rally. She put 1500 miles on the trike during that trip. Four months and 4,000 miles later, she decided she liked riding enough to justify a new motorcycle. Through her commitment to the Hogs and Heroes Foundation, she performs community service at Walter Reed hospital, where she’s met many wounded warriors. She joined the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) (http://www.patriotguard.org/), whose mission is to “1) Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2) Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors”. As a PGR member, she performs duty as escort to burials at Arlington National Cemetery of active duty military personnel killed in the Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
“This trike is a tribute to women in the military,” Chelle said. “Often, women are not recognized when people think of veterans. I am one of few women who have three generations of women in the military, something I’m extremely proud of!”

The day she picked up the trike from the paint shop, she rode directly from Edgewater, MD to Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) to join a PGR escort. In an eerie coincidence, the service was for the first female veteran Chelle had participated in. “It was just meant to be!” she said. No other activity would have been a fitting first ride for her tribute trike. She went directly from ANC to the WIMSA business office, where she met Brigadier General (retired) Wilma Vaught, WIMSA president. General Vaught gladly stood with Free Spirit for pictures next to the trike. The General invited her to participate in the 15th anniversary of the WIMSA Memorial, scheduled for October 19-20, 2012. Chelle’s road name “Free Spirit” is painted on the tour pack. “I pretty much do what I want to do when I want to do it, and I travel far and wide”, she says as an explanation to the road name. As evidence, just 3 days after getting it back from the paint shop, her christening ride (solo) was a 2,600 mile trip to Key West, FL by way of Clearwater, and return to her home in Alexandria, VA. She doesn’t trailer the trike anywhere now. Chelle frequently enters the trike in motorcycle shows. Her first, at Daytona Bike Week in Daytona Beach, FL brought second place in the trike/sidecar class at the Harley Davidson ride in custom motorcycle show. Her trophy was presented by the infamous Willie G. Davidson, grandson of the founder, just before he announced his retirement. She usually places, occasionally taking first place in her category. She’s running out of room on the corner shelf reserved for the awards.
TRIPS Sturgis, SD (trailering old trike) August 2011 Clearwater, FL business trip combined with Key West, FL (riding new trike) February 2012 Daytona Bike Week March 2012 Atlanta, GA Business Trip combined with Outer Banks Bike Week April 2012 Montreal, Canada Business Trip May 2012 Westin, WV Hogs & Heroes event May 2012 Family Reunion Texas & Oklahoma June 2012 Sturgis, SD combined with Louisville, KY business trip August 2012
But, this trike is not just for show. Chelle rides it every opportunity she gets, often for business trips. She rode it to Clearwater, FL, Montreal, Canada, Atlanta, GA, and Louisville, KY for meetings with an international aviation committee. Free Spirit recently returned from her second Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD – this time she rode there and back - 14 days, 13 states, and 4500 miles! She has accumulated 23,000 miles on the trike in the seven months since it came out of the custom paint shop.Along with the mileage on her first trike, she earned her 25,000 mile patch about a year after she started riding again.

ho doesn’t love 10 days of the sound of motors reving up? Ten days of sunshine with the wind in your hair! Concert after concert and a downtown filled with every kind of bike you can imagine...from some awesome custom models to showroom quality to those old classics! Ten days of having your favorite beverage overlooking hundreds of bikes and the beautiful Sandusky Bay! And tons of people that have the same love that you have! Oh yeah! I’m talking about Ohio Bike Week in downtown Sandusky! Let’s make this clear….if you haven’t been then you need to get there! With many year round biker friendly establishments, Sandusky welcomes you with open arms and the fun is electric! There are vendors with every kind of food you can imagine so you won’t starve! And you will find lots of very cool merchandise just in case you need to add to your wardrobe. And dice runs, poker runs and a few trips to the islands thrown in for good measure. This is really a great way to combine your vacation with your first love…riding your scoot!
no seat and onto the fender I rode! I obviously didn’t mind it because that was 14 years ago and I am still on the back except there is one requirement…a pee pad! I would say there is always one adventure for me personally during OBW. Last year, we had the Shovel there and she was sounding good. So we entered the downtown area where all the bikes are parked and all the people are milling around. Great ride so far. But the one thing you can always count on with a Shovel…she has a mind of her own! And just as we are riding in the heart of the downtown area, right in front of one of the better known beverage establishments, she sputtered and stalled. Now the attention is not on the cool old bike but it’s the cool old bike that stalled! Couple quick kicks and she was going again and we ended up finding the best parking spot we have ever found! I love when things come together! So I am hoping to see all of you enjoy this year’s festivities. And I am really looking forward to seeing what new adventure this year’s Ohio Bike Week has in store for me…riding on the back!
I’ve been going to Ohio Bike Week forever! One of my very favorite moments is the bike parade. Whether you are in it or watching it from a comfy bar stool, it is a sight to see and to hear! The streets are closed and hundreds of bikes descend on the downtown where they park in the streets. All you can see are bikes for miles!
So I have some off the wall picks for you to visit while you are here. You already know where the bars are and there will be plenty with Ohio Bike Week in full swing. But..how about something a little out of the ordinary. Enjoy the sunrise from Jackson Street Pier and possibly catch a freighter going by. Or, take a ride on a sunny afternoon and check out these biker friendly places.
Now, I’m not the Ohio Bike Week Tourism Director…I am just saying get there and you will always want to come back. I do have one observation from previous years. I have noticed a lot of bikes that have empty backs. Yes! No riders! Come on guys! Find that pretty lady to be on the back! Remember, she can point out all the bars along the way!
The New Sandusky Fish Company is just two blocks east of the downtown and they are located right on the water! You can enjoy the very best perch while seated outside overlooking the water. They do have a full menu and you can eat there at one of the picnic tables or get your food to go! You do have saddle bags right!
My first Bike Week was my first ride on a Harley. Many of you already know this story so I will keep it short! Nice bike…
Another stop that you may not want to miss is the famous Toft’s Dairy for the very best ice cream cone ever! Just west of

Shovel parked at OBW Sandusky on Venice Road, Toft’s is the oldest dairy in Ohio. This is their main location and you can’t miss it! Their ice cream parlor is open seven days a week. This is a great little ride that ends with a wonderful treat…a Toft’s ice cream cone. They also have ice cream parlors in Port Clinton and Fremont! Riding always works up a taste for something yummy and chocolate… or is that just me? If it’s not a cold one then it should be a cone! I am going to have more great little places to venture to throughout the summer and fall. Some good rides that can be are memorable. How do I know all of this, you ask? Hey..I’m taking notes from the back of the bike!

Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN IS BACK! This is a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio! It’s a ride like no-other and features great prizes every month!
The Way it Works
The Winners
Each month Thunder Roads Ohio we will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops here in the magazine and online. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.
If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a Biketoberfest Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead.
Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting stops, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and even the opportunity to win a motorcycle or two! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea to encourage everyone to get out and ride!
• Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only checkin’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
State and Stop Prizes
BONUS Check-in’s!
Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com
Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. PLEASE NOTE: You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Some stops will also extra prizes for those with 2012 Ride Cards - for those “veteran riders”!
One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners that make cool ride stops!
Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com
Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.
We’ve had changes in ownership and management since last summer’s run, so we feel obligated to make some big changes in the contest as well! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is built upon the same fundamental idea as last year’s - TO GET OUT AND RIDE! - but, we’ve made some key changes in the program.
The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.
• All prizes are awarded based upon check-in’s. The more check-in’s the greater chance to win cool prizes!
PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
CHANGES FROM 2012
• We are no longer tracking points - which seemed to confuse many people. It’s all based upon check-ins.
• Bonus “Check-In’s” are still awarded for spending over $10 at a stop, but we are no longer giving a $100 bonus. Some people felt that this allowed riders to “buy” their way to victory. • Prize Winners are listed every month in the magazine, online, and in our eNewsletters. Winners will have 45 days to contact Thunder Roads Ohio to collect their prize. • There is no longer a distance bonus, but the more you ride - the more chances you have of winning. Some prizes are restricted only to those riders checking in at a particular location. For instance, we may be awarding a $500 Gift Certificate to riders checking in at a particular dealership. Only riders making the trip to that particular dealership have a chance of winning. For the chance at winning $500 - it might be worth taking the ride to that dealership, especially if it’s a great ride!

ere’s an American Hero who wants to share his real life story with you all. Rich “Sarge” Osiolek went into service June 26, 1974 during the end of the Vietnam War. In the early 80’s he had a break in service during Desert Storm. He was also part of Delaware National Guard; Delaware Air Guard & Army Reserves. Rich always had his clothes in his Rucksack ready to go if he was called to duty supporting his country. The Rucksack would hold three days’ worth of clothing and gear. During his many years with the National Guard, Sarge was called to assist with Natural Disasters such as hurricanes, snow storms, floods and anything else Mother Nature could throw at them.
H
During the 9/11/2001 Terrorist Attacks on the U.S., Sarge was in the MD National Guard Air Traffic Control Unit. After this he was activated to a Guard Post in MD for the United States Property and Fiscal Office, USPFO. Rich retired in 2005 with over 27 years of service, 8 years was Active Duty. Sarge retired from the 129th Air Traffic Services Company, Edgewood, MD, which falls under the 29th Division of which Rich is very proud to be associated. Sarge is an E6 SSG (Staff Sergeant). He was Supply Sergeant for his unit. During this entire time, he did not go to any “Conflicts” for our country – though he wanted to go and was ready and willing. He was with his friends “in spirit” that did go overseas. Sarge has sent care packages and moral support through emails to those who were deployed. Sarge now goes to active-duty friend’s retirement and birthday parties and recently attended a “welcome 68

experience which leaves you speechless and choked up. The next big event, Rich and Linda enjoyed was a four day event in June 2012 to Maryland/Delaware HOG Rally, a 300 mile trip, to Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. This was their first HOG Rally which was very enjoyable and exciting just getting there. Riding up and down the mountains in route to Western Maryland was beautiful and breathtaking. There were daily planned rides with the group but the most memorable was a trip to the Flight 93 crash site in Stoystown, PA. If you have not gotten to this National Park yet, put it on your list. If it doesn’t get to you emotionally, you’re dead. This really hits you and is very touching. Riding the road together again in July 2012, to Detroit, Michigan to visit family, Rich and Linda enjoyed a 2500 Mile round trip on the motorcycle. In September 2012, Rich rode to the Ocean City Maryland “Bike Fest” and volunteered with his Hogs and Heroes Foundation Brothers & Sisters for a very worthwhile event and enjoyed the beach at the same time. home party” for an officer, who was a former company commander, with whom he always stayed friendly. Rich regularly stays in contact with his fellow army vets. Rich has made many acquaintances and friends in his Army service, some of which will be life-long friends and they know who they are. Even today, Rich’s uniform is always ready to go if called for a funeral for a fallen soldier, retired soldier, ALL SOLDIERS! Sarge proudly wore his dress Blues when getting married to Linda in 2005 and also for a huge family reception in 2006. Rich «Sarge» Osiolek was always patriotic throughout his whole life and still feels strongly about patriotism to the U.S. Rich and his wife Linda love spending time together and riding their prize possession, a 2004 Ultra Glide Harley Davidson® Motorcycle. Rich felt one unique way to Support our Troops would be to customize his Harley®. In February 2012 his motorcycle was customized in vinyl wrap with a graphic design near and dear to his heart. The first of its kind was done by Formula One Tinting and Graphics in Delaware, 302-832-TINT. The Designer Aaron and Formula One owner, Ron, worked their magic and spent many diligent hours to make his motorcycle perfect, as it’s now proudly called “Army 1.” The whole motorcycle is dedicated to the Army. All the conflicts that occurred during the time that Sarge was in service are displayed on the front fender from Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
Vietnam to Afghanistan. The Army has a proud history of elite specialty groups, such as Special Forces, Rangers, Airborne Units as the 101st and the 82nd. Their symbols and phrases are prominently displayed. One has to look at every angle of the bike to see all of the respective symbols and military references. Soldiers can appreciate these thoughts wholeheartedly. A quote that is very meaningful is shown on the back that was said by General Norman Schwarzkopf, “I believe that forgiving them is God’s Function - Our Job is simply to arrange the meeting.” Rich had the bike for about 2 years and has already put 14,000 miles on it and still counting. Rich is a member of the Delaware Patriot Guards, 1st State HOG chapter, New Castle, Delaware; American Legion, Newark, Delaware; Hogs and Heroes Foundation-Delaware Chapter 2, Inc., and is a 4th Degree Knight in Knights of Columbus in Delaware. Sarge has experienced the joys of many “rides” with the various groups and has made many new riding friends. An important ride this year and a “first” for Rich and Linda, was to participate in Rolling Thunder 2012, riding with the Patriot Guard members. The ride around the Washington roads was truly an emotional and patriotic experience – to see all those people waving flags, signs, and yelling “thanks” was inspiring. At the end of the ride was a walk by the Vietnam Wall which was again a very emotional ThunderRoadsOhio.com
Riding always provides rewarding feelings of stress relief and riding with his fellow motorcycle enthusiasts and volunteering for many different causes keeps Rich wanting to ride as much as possible. He has the need to keep “feeling the wind in his face”. This year he put his motorcycle in bike shows and has received three trophies. He will continue to show his motorcycle while forever supporting our American Heroes, therefore many more trophies to come. Rich says, “if you see me out and about please stop me to share and swap stories – I’d love to hear them. We can share our SOS (only our military brothers and sisters will understand)”. Sarge stated “the United States is the worst anyone will have to deal with, we are the biggest and baddest”. He feels we need to continue support for our troops! At his home the flag pole proudly fly’s the U.S. Flag on top and Army flag right under it every day. Our Army’s history is a proud one. At heart, it is a story of ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things for their country. It’s a story of personal courage, selfless service and sacrifice. Rich lives and breaths the Army: STILL PROUD, STILL SERVING, STILL SALUTING. Who-ah! Written by Suzy “CareBear” Leighton Pictures by Michelle Wallace M.Lee.Photo8@gmail.com 69

The Honor Release Return “Freedom March” By Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
On April 9th, 2013, a group of advocates for American prisoners of war descended on Washington DC to march and bring attention to American service members who have been left behind as prisoners of war at the end of conflicts. The event was organized by Honor Release Return, Inc. a new organization formed to bring prisoner of war/missing in action (POW/MIA) activist groups together and gain action on bringing home the missing. The day began with everyone gathering in front of the Lincoln Memorial on a picture perfect day with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool glistening in bright sunlight. The groups split into smaller groups to carry wreaths to the Vietnam Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. The wreaths were placed with great respect and honor to commemorate dedication to bringing home those left behind. Then we walked to the World War II memorial and laid a wreath there. Each group paid honors to those who have not returned and said a prayer for their safety and peace for their families. The crowd of Washington visitors joined in with silent respect for the sacrifice of those who went to war and vanished. There are still approximately 73,600 missing from World War II, 7,900 missing from the Korean War, 1,600 missing from 74
the Vietnam War and 6 missing from Iraq and other conflicts. While many who attended are motorcyclists and wore their vests, the uniform of the day was blue “Bring Bowe Home” t-shirts and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flags. The T-shirts are just one of the many ways veterans and concerned citizens around the country are showing public support for bringing Bowe Bergdahl home. Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl was captured June 30, 2009 and remains in captivity with the Haqqani Network near the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s important we bring him home before the troops are pulled out. As we walked the two miles to Congress we passed thousands of people who had come to Washington DC on vacation or to see the cherry Blossoms in bloom. A majority waved, took pictures and asked about the march. When they learned the number still missing most were shocked. Many Americans just assume that we bring everyone home when a war or conflict ends but that is not the case. As time goes by and the world gets smaller we learn more about those who have not returned. It’s hard for many to understand how we could leave them behind in the first place let alone ignore the information about those who still survive.

The list of speakers included Mike Benge, Prisoner of War, Vietnam, 28 Jan.’68 – 5 Mar. ’73. Mike was a civilian contractor who was captured while making sure his fellow workers escaped advancing forces. Larry Stark, Prisoner of War, Vietnam, 1 Feb. ’68 – 5 Mar. ’73. Larry makes annual trips to Southeast Asia gathering information on the missing and trying to pinpoint those still held in camps. He is certain that several live prisoners could be purchased from corrupt guards for a reasonable amount of money and political asylum. Carmel Whetzel, WWII, Prisoner of War, Germany, 7 Nov. ’44 – 1 May ’45, told us about his capture by the Germans and how he escaped once for three weeks before being recaptured. All of the speakers made a plea to do whatever is necessary to bring home the missing, especially those who still survive. Bob Bergdahl, father of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, told about his son’s capture in a remote area of Afghanistan gave a very personal and passionate speech for his return. He had received information within the past couple of weeks that Bowe is alive and being treated reasonably well, all things considered. He said that one of the pictures released by his captures did seem to show a bruise on Bowe’s face that looked like it was made by a rifle butt but reassured us his son was an airborne soldier and tough enough to take it. Bowe was an outgoing kid who was home schooled, helped his neighbors and prayed before eating. He earned money before joining the military as a river rafting guide and a shooting instructor. He excelled in the military and was

scheduled for Special Forces training when he finished his tour in Afghanistan. Many will be going to Hailey, Idaho for a major Bring Bowe Home event June 29th. You can find out more on this important event and how to help Bowe at www.bringhomebowe.com. Other speakers included Roger Hall, POW/MIA activist who told us about his quest to obtain classified reports and information being held on live Prisoners of War. Bob ‘Bulldog’ Ousley, Major, US Army (Retired) and former Special Operations aviator, read the Honor Release Return list of demands to bring the missing home and made a fiery speech that had the crowd really pumped for action. Longtime advocate Ted Schpak talked about efforts to pass legislation to insure no soldier is ever left behind again. The sound system in front of the Congress was loud and every word echoed off the windows of the capitol. The first amendment right of free speech was tested and affirmed. We even got some high fives from the Capitol Police. As we get closer to Memorial Day please plan a moment of silence for those who’ve sacrificed so much to make it safe for you to stand in the sun, BBQ a burger and sip on something cold with family and friends. Think about those who’ve not come home and try to imagine what it would be like if it were your son or daughter who was missing in action or possibly held prisoner in a foreign land. Who will speak for them and who will stand for them if not you. If not now, when? “Until They All Come Home” — Bulldog

The ZERO S
Photos and Review by The Iron Cowboy, Thunder Roads Ohio
This was my first time riding an electric motorcycle, and frankly - I had no idea what to expect. With virtually no sound whatsoever from the engine (even at 90+ I discovered) I subconsciously equated the bike with one of my kids power wagons. That being said - I was amazed by what I discovered. First and foremost, this is certainly no toy; but it is easily one of the most fun bikes I’ve ever ridden. Zero Motorcycles Inc. is an American manufacturer of electric motorcycles. Formerly called Electricross, it was started in 2006 near Santa Cruz, California in Scotts Valley by Neal Saiki, a former NASA engineer. The Zero lineup includes 5 distinct models ranging from the MX motocross model to the Zero DS which they describe as a dual sport motorcycle. The XU and FX models appear to be “urban motocross” bikes with a very utilitarian look to them. The bike I had the opportunity to demo was the 2013 Zero S - which they describe as their “Streetfighter”. It has a very modern, sportbike look to it - which several admirers compared to various expensive Italian race bikes. Unlike the more basic appearing motocross looking models - the battery on the Zero S is enclosed more within the fairing. Both the S and DS models lack the prominent battery packs - and attract attention as stylish looking bikes even when they aren’t moving. I rode the bike up to Jackass Flats during lunch hour and a number of folks came out to check the bike out while it was parked. If was only after a few noticed the lack of exhaust and other standard features that anyone realized it was an electric bike. Of course, once I fired it up the response was
84
consistently - “what is that?!” The Zero S has an electric motor - no clutch - and no transmission. You twist the throttle and the bike silently launches forward. The sensation is truly unique especially as you silently move through traffic and effortlessly travel at whatever speed you want. It’s clear that the torque and acceleration is a major consideration in the bike’s design. Standing still the rider is positioned forward seemingly above the controls. Then as you launch, you are thrown back against the angled seat. The combination of your position on the bike - leaning forward over the controls and it’s silent high performance operation give the sensation of flying effortlessly over the pavement. As you cut through the traffic, passing cagers shackled by the constraints of more traditional means of conveyance you can’t help but feel as though this is the future of transportation. And that’s just in terms of the riding experience. Let’s consider the mechanics of the bike now. The 2013 ZERO S features both a new battery and a new motor. The Z-FORCE tm motor is a proprietary design that is designed to provide exhilarating acceleration without the need for any regular maintenance. No oil changes, spark plugs, or other limitations. There are no emissions - so no carb, exhaust, or other obstructions to deal with. The Z-FORCEtm Power Pack is also a completely new design in the ZERO S and is rated at over 130 mile range and over 300,000 miles lifetime. Each cell in the battery is individually controlled and monitored to ensure maximum health and performance. The ZERO motorcycles also offer the ability to actively sync (through Bluetooth) with your iPhone or Android mobile device and offer unprecedented control. While riding, your phone transforms into a customizable dash that provides detailed real time information on the motorcycle. While parked you can set specific parameters for top speed, maximum torque, and control regenerative braking. All through your phone. Once again, we are not talking about a toy - but a high performance motorcycle. The Zero S weighs in at 355 pounds with the basic battery package - about the same

weight as a 250cc sport bike and about 80 pounds lighter than its competitor the Brammo Empulse R. Once again, it wasn’t at all what I expected. I expected an underpowered bike weighed down by a monstrous battery - and I found the exact opposite. There’s so much more I could tell you about the bike - such as it’s selective power modes (Power or Economy - which was more then peppy on its own), recharging (just plug it in overnight or at one of a growing number of charging stations now found all across the nation), or the options for storage (one deep well - remember no gas tank and option for saddlebags). Your best bet though is to simply head to the nearest Zero dealership and take one out on your own. You’ll be amazed. For those of you in Southern Ohio, you’re in luck - you have Joe’s Cycle in Dayton. For those of you up North, check them out online at http://www.zeromotorcycles.com, and then make the trip down to Joe’s! You won’t regret it. Zero makes a line of dirt bikes including the X and higher performance MX. They also produce street motorcycles, beginning with S in 2009. The S began shipping in volume in 2010, the first model year to include the Agni Motor[clarification needed], at which time the DS, a dualsport model based on the S chassis became available. The XU, a smaller street bike with a removable battery, based on the same chassis as the Zero dirtbikes was introduced in 2011. In 2012, Zero introduced the ZF9 Power Pack with the Zero S & DS models making them the first production electric motorcycles that can exceed an EPAestimated 100 miles on a single charge. In January 2012, Pike’s Research ranked Zero Motorcycles the highest among electric motorcycle manufacturers

The Miami Valley Pit Crew (MVPC) rescue is a network of volunteer foster homes dedicated to rescue and rehabilitation of abused, neglected, and misunderstood dogs and puppies. We specialize in Bully Breeds: Bulldog Breeds, Pit Bull Breeds, Mastiff Breeds, and any mixes of the aforementioned. We pull dogs from Ohio’s worst kill shelters. We also educate owners and the public, on bully breeds and Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). We specialize in dogs but we respect all living creatures and encourage others to do the same by education. The MVPC evaluates each rescue request to determine the dogs re-homing probability. We want to ensure each dog we take in can be rehabilitated into a family member. We work hard locally to educate bully breed owners and speak out against Breed Specific Legislation. This is sweet Emily. She came to us from a kill shelter in Mansfield, OH. The caring staff there knew she was a sweetheart and contacted MVPC, so Emily would have the time and safety needed to find her forever home. Emily knows she has been rescued and loves to be with a family in a safe, loving home. She is about 4 years old, has been spayed and she appears to have been bred too much. She prefers to be the baby of the house, so she is happy those days are long gone. Emily gets along well with other dogs, loves kids and enjoys daily walks! She also knows her basic commands and is potty trained. This girl just really wants to snuggle up on the couch with someone she loves and who will love her in return. Reagan is a sweet little bundle of wiggles! She is about a year and a half old, but is just a petite little thing. She has a beautiful red brindle coat with white markings, and gorgeous gold eyes. Reagan loves to run and play, and would make an amazing agility dog or running partner. She is very coordinated and super fast! She is learning how to focus at an amazing rate, and is picking up good habits and manners from her foster brothers and sisters. She even plays appropriately with her feline foster sib! Sox is a handsome fella that has suffered terribly in his past life. He had bite marks all over his body, specifically on his back, but he has received plenty of TLC and veterinarian care. This is one chilled out, relaxed boy. He is living with five other foster siblings both male and female. He gets along with all of them extremely well. He can acclimate himself into any situation. Sox is ready for a break. Are you ready to give this boy the loving home he deserves? United She StandS Designwraps Brand CEO Embarks On 36-Month U.S. Tour To Promote American-Made Products
by
Wendy Pitlick ~ Black Hills Pioneer
USA - Freedom is that feeling you get when you are out in the wind.” That’s Joan Krenning’s personal definition of freedom, and it strongly relates to the message the small business owner is taking on the road as she embarks on a 36-month motorcycle tour of the United States. Riding a 2013 Harley Davidson Street Glide that has been dubbed “Freedom Glide,” and is wrapped with Constitution graphics designed by Red Phoenix Marketing, including the words of the Bill of Rights, Krenning’s ride mission is to pro-
mote American-made products, and to remind people of what the phrase “United We Stand” really means. Krenning, the founder and CEO of American-made DesignWraps Brands, the premier manufacturer of Made in the USA headwear, knows what she’s talking about. She is eager to relay her message and hear the stories of others, as she stops at every licensed Harley-Davidson dealership in the lower 48 states. Freedom in America is definitely something Krenning does not take for granted. For most of the 1980s she was the proud owner of Loveland, Colorado’s popular biker bar, The Buckhorn Tavern. Krenning lost the bar when she was arrested for drug possession in 1988. After serving some time in prison, Krenning emerged stronger, drug-free, and full of ambition. Deeming herself as “unemployable,” and battling a negative self image of herself because of past mistakes, Krenning turned to what she loved — sewing, and creating head gear for bikers. It wasn’t long before Krenning started her business that allowed her to enjoy life on the road, meeting people, and thanking God for her freedom to do so. “One of my fears is what we are doing to ourselves in America,” Krenning said. “Everybody likes to use the phrase, ‘United We Stand, Divided We Fall,’ but I really don’t think that one out of 1,000 Americans ever think about what that really means. ‘United We Stand’ means that as Americans we have to agree to disagree on issues, because that is the way it has always been. We have always supported our country. Regardless of how we believe, we still need to support each other financially by supporting American jobs, pray for each other, and respect each others’ personal beliefs for what they are.”

“Patriotism is a devotion to one’s country. I believe we are all Americans first. Before we are Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans. The definition of indivisible: Not divisible; unable to be divided or separated.” As a “Made in the USA” manufacturer of quality head wraps for the last 23 years, Krenning said she has been frustrated over the last 10 years by the lack of American-made raw materials available to small manufacturers.
BIKE NIGHTS
Her mission is simple: to promote the purchase of American Made products, to promote the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and to inspire hope in Americans.
“When I first started, I could find U.S. made fabrics, and little by little, all of the fabric companies that I had been dealing with went out of business and all of my alternatives came from China,” Krenning said. “I was bummed about that. I was still manufacturing products in the USA by employing Americans to cut and sew. Every hang tag or package was Made in the USA, but now I had to purchase fabrics that were not manufactured in this country.” Krenning launched her ride across America, called the “Glory US-A Freedom Ride,” on Feb. 2, 2013, and she said it has been a dream-come-true for this biker who has been riding since 1986. She loves the freedom of the open road, and she loves stopping and hearing the many stories from the people she meets, not just at the Harley dealerships, but in the truck stops, the banks, the Starbucks and every other place she stops.” “I meet the most interesting people,” she said. “Then all of a sudden I am spending three hours at one place.” That’s a problem Krenning said she needs to work out, since in order to make it to every licensed Harley Davidson dealer in 48 states over 36 months, she needs to stay on a tight time schedule. At the end of her trip, Krenning will have visited more than 700 dealerships and traveled more than 200,000 miles. The best part of her trip, Krenning said, is the people. “I didn’t plan on the conversation I had with the Korean Prisoner of War, or the woman I spent time with in the truck stop who needed prayer. I could name a thousand people I have met,” she said. Not all of the stories people have shared with her have been happy ones, though. Krenning said when she crossed the Gulf, she heard many stories of lives that were ravaged by hurricanes. “We got upset around the country when the hurricane hit and our gas prices went up,” she said. “Did we once ever think about what they were going through? They didn’t just have gas prices that went up. They lost whole industries. They lost their homes. They had kids that had to change schools and no roofs on their house for a year. I listened to all of these stories and was like ‘oh my gosh, how did you make it?’ At the same time, the people who seemed the happiest were the people who had the least.” In addition to creating awareness about American-made products and what freedom means, Krenning is also riding to raise money for Laura Klock’s “Helping With Horsepower” program, and the “Wounded Warrior Project.” She also plans to raise money and awareness for her newly formed Wraps of Hope Foundation. In fact, Krenning said a small portion of all the proceeds from the sales of her DesignWraps Brand products would go toward the Wraps of Hope Foundation. In addition to her custom wrap, which Krenning personally designed, “The Freedom Glide” motorcycle is also decked out with custom aftermarket parts that are 100% Made in America, provided by her sponsors: Klock Werks, RideWright Wheels, J&P Cycles, Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, Yaffe’s Bagger Nation, MGS Custom Bikes, Danny Gray Seats, Roaring Toyz, Wire Plus and Saddleman. American-made apparel sponsors are Churchill Gloves, Latus Motors HarleyDavidson, Inferno Googles and her newest sponsor, Fox Creek Leathers. Interested persons may follow her rides and experiences, as well as view her complete schedule at her blog at www.ladyroaddog.com, or www.designwraps.com. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Riding a Motocross Track FOR THE FIRST TI ME Contributed by Zack, motocrossracing101.com Photos courtesy Amherst Meadowlarks Motorcycle Club There is nothing more exciting than riding a real motocross track for the first time. Depending on the track it can be both exciting and scary. If this your first time ever on a motocross track make sure you learn the track as fast as possible. Here is what I like to do when arriving at a new track that I have never rode before. When I first get to a new track I like to walk around it and see how everything looks. I check out the corners, jumps and lines. If the track is really long I will take a couple sight laps and try to memorize what each jump is. After I feel comfortable and know what a few of the jumps are I will try to string a couple sections together jumping what I remember. If I am not sure what the jump is I will roll it until I remember exactly what it is. When practicing, if you are the only one on the track make sure you try different lines and use the whole track. The majority of people will follow others lines even though there are smoother, faster lines available. Choosing the right line can help increase your speed along with providing a smoother ride making you less tired.
Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
If you are practicing at a public track with other riders it may be a bit harder to get in your groove and learn the track. Try not to get caught up racing other people as they go by, just do your thing and try to stay as smooth as possible. If there is a jump that you are not doing be courteous and try to hug the sides of the track leaving the middle open for the riders who are jumping the jumps. After you have cleared the jump resume your normal riding. Do not worry about getting in the way of other riders on straightaways and turns, if another ride is truly faster than you he or she can find another line to get around you. If possible while you are riding have a friend or parent watch you along with the other riders. They may be able to pick up on a line or something that the faster riders are doing that could help you improve. If there is a rhythm section that has multiple jump options I like to have someone watch what others are doing to see if I can change up how I am jumping the section. Sometimes I will find another way that is faster or maybe the way that I am going is the best. The more you know about a track the better you will be able to ride it. The key to getting better at anything is practice and the same is true for motocross racing. Every time you go to a new track do your best to learn it as fast as possible. Don’t be scared to ask others what they are doing in certain sections many will be more than happy to help you out.

Salem Motorcycle Club By Renee Coleman-Eichler Photos by Erin Lambright EAST PALESTINE ---- Motorcycle racing is a passion shared by young and old alike. It is this passion that drives the members of the Salem Motorcycle Club (SMC) to promote the best races they can. Operating tracks in both East Palestine and Lisbon, the club, which has been around since the 1940’s, offers harescramble racing for rides ages 4 and up from March through October. Club members strive to make these races a competitive event in a family friendly atmosphere. Many riders are familiar faces, returning month after month and year after year. Some riders began their racing careers at SMC, which formerly operated tracks on Teegarden Road outside of Salem, and on Trinity Church Road outside of Lisbon, and are now bring their children. This re-enforces the club’s family vibe, which is evident during registration where the laughter and jokes flow with ease. There are times when three generations can be found on the track, with classes ranging from Super Senior to Junior Peewee. The track length and difficulty varies each race, sometimes pushing a rider to the limit. Younger riders compete on an abbreviated track that still challenges the up and coming with hills, sharp turns, and other obstacles. Another aspect of SMC that draws in riders is the different terrains offered at the clubs two tracks, Big Valley in East Palestine, and Skyview in Lisbon. Big Valley sits along state Route 170 between Negley and East Palestine. The former hill climb track offers SMC members a chance to challenge riders with steep hills and a creek. Skyview, a large track sat high a-top a hill on Mattix Road, off state Route 164 south of Lisbon, offers rolling hills and a scenic view. The spacious track also allows club members to try different layouts and dream of new things to offer riders. Along with different tracks, the club also offers different races, including a team race, Buckeye Bum Buster and Pumpkin Run. The team race which sees two riders join forces for an extended race, normal brings a large turnout to the track. Also, an extended race, the Buckeye Bum Buster, was new to the SMC schedule and proved successful in its inaugural run. To get riders into the Halloween spirit, SMC hosts an annual Pumpkin Run, where rid100
ers must race with a pumpkin, trying not to lose or smash the pumpkin along the way. Riders, sometimes in costumes, carry the pumpkin in backpacks, bags, and other creative ways. Those who complete one lap with a complete pumpkin go home with a prize. Honoring those who made not only a lasting impression on the club, but were also a crucial part of its success and staying power, is also important to currently members. To honor those who have came before, the club holds the annual Corky Wurster Memorial and Willy Miller Classic. Wurster, who served as club president for over 25 years, died in small plane crash in 1984 and since then the club has raced in his memory. Miller, who passed away in 2008, was also a long-time president of the club and a familiar sight on the track, riding around in his trusty golf cart. He developed the club’s annual mini-bike giveaway, where youth riders can earn a chance to win the bike each time they race a SMC event. A winner is drawn at the club’s final race of the season.

where you want it to go, then draw around each foot on the masking tape.
5. Remove the rack, and you should have perfect circles where each foot was located.
8. The fastening hardware that the rack came with is good, but I was a little worried about the size of the washers. I didn’t want the rack feet punching a hole through the lid. Also, with the ABS reinforcement in place, the supplied screws were not long enough.
9. I went to the hardware store and bought longer (1.5 inch) screws (this rack uses standard M6 thread screws), along with one-inch fender washers and matching rubber washers. This spreads the load over a much wider area than the original hardware and makes me feel better.
7. Drill using a small diameter bit first, to ensure you drill the exact position you want, then use the correct size bit for the machine screws you will be using. Keep in mind that the holes need to be perpendicular to the GROUND, not to the curve of the lid. Put the trunk rack on the lid and have a look at the angle of the feet - that’s the angle you’ll need to drill the holes to, or else the machine screws will not line up correctly. When finished drilling, remove the tape.

10. Put a fender washer on the screw (I used two, to adjust for the screw length), and push it through from the bottom of the lid. Then put the rubber washer down onto the screw, followed by another metal fender washer. This compresses the rubber washer against the trunk lid, to keep it water-tight.
11. Start the threads by hand on each foot, then start tightening them a bit at a time (a bit on one foot, then a bit on the next, and so on). Tighten enough to compress the rubber washers, but not to damage the plastic (remember, this is relatively soft ABS you’re working with). 12. The result: An extremely strong trunk rack that does not depend on the strength of the lid top to support it; instead it transfers the weight down to the much stronger sides of the trunk lid. Now go out for a long ride on some twisty roads to test your work - I consider this to be a mandatory procedure after doing any work on the motorcycle, no matter how minor!

Powder Coating

Chad and Trent after finishing the last cover.
Fundamentals and a MX Tribute Ride
This month the TRO Paint Shop takes a look at Powder Coating as an alternative to traditional paint and considers a KTM given a powder coating facelift. Trent Peters, a 20 year old graduate of the PowerSports Institute in Cleveland, fondly remembers riding dirt bikes with his big brother, Colt Shoup. Trent, 8 years younger than Colt, rode a Yamaha PW 80, and Colt rode his new graduation gift, a brand new 2003 KTM SX125. Not really introduced to the racing scene, Colt and Trent would tear up the dirt on their family’s property in Perrysville. However, less than half a year after the KTM was brought home; it was relegated to the garage. the sounds of summer Ahh Yes, the sounds of Summer are upon us. The annoying chirping of the 17 Year Cicada will be here before we know it, bikes rumbling off in the distance, and better yet, the harmony of our favorite bands jamming all summer long at various events. I’ve said it before, if it weren’t for these Bands rocking our events, we would be at a definite loss. They say life is better with a soundtrack, and I couldn’t agree more. As I’ve mentioned in the past I grew up in the seventies, and I appreciate the music of that era. I hit high school in the eighties, and obviously was affected by the Hair Band Mania. I saw many, many bands in the eighties and had some great times listening to those guys, but the older I get, the more I’m drawn back to the late seventies and early eighties, and NO I’m not talking about Duran Duran for Gods sake... In fact, growing up listening to Led Zepplin, Ozzy, Kiss and the like, I often am let down by what’s getting passed off as Rock and Roll these Days. I skipped the whole “grunge” thing thank God, but I really miss that Stadium “Anthem” pure Rock and Roll. That is until now. If you were around during the mid to late seventies into the eighties, you may remember a little band from Columbus Ohio by the name of The GODZ. Formed in 1976 they rocked it alongside many big name tours like Kiss, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Kansas, Iggy Pop, Judas Priest and later Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. The GODZ mainstay driving force over the past several decades has been Mr. Eric Moore. He, along with several other members like the legendary Mark Chatfield, and Scott A. Martin have filled the ranks through the years have stayed true to the classic rock and roll of yesterday. What you may not have known is that The GODZ “Rock and Roll Machine” produced an offspring in the mid nineties by the name of Mari Jayn. Under the guidance of Eric Moore, and the ripping guitar of GODZ Scott A. Martin, Mari Jayn is screaming up the ranks in Metal Rock and Roll once again. Bassist & Back up Vocalist Mikel Anthony and former GODZ Drummer David “Screamin D” Ansley bring a modern Rock and Roll maturity you rarely see into the mix these days. And then there are those vocals. Wow. The newest addition to Mari Jayn is Jordan Cundiff on lead vocals. I’ll say it again, Wow. This kid, and I say kid relative to the twenty something years behind him is astounding for any age and format. In fact when we all met up for a chat, it was joked that he may just be a reincarnated early eighties rocker. He’s that good. 108
I and others have been fortunate to catch some of their shows recently, and it got me curious so I sat down with the band, and their Promoter, Mentor and Producer Extraordinaire Mr. Eric Moore. I knew that the latest revision of Mari Jayn is roughly six months out of the box, but their sound & performance is so polished and “ivy league Rocker” I wanted to know more. When I asked Eric his thoughts about Mari Jayn he told me; “I’m proud of the history of this band. They’ve played with a lot of national acts. The Biggest Deal about this band is that they are the Full package. Their material is F’n Awesome. Many bands can play other peoples music, but this band can write and perform. Everything a band desires to be, in this band already exists. Many people just hearing their originals for the first time fall in love with it before the end of the song, and you can see them singing along the chorus before it’s even over”. I asked Eric where their focus is currently and he Said “We’ve cut a top notch demo, and from there it’s get on the road and promote and perform.” Eric also told me that Mari Jayn has been invited to perform on the GODZ Tribute Album due out later this year along with several national acts that have expressed interest in participating on the project. When I asked the others what they thought set them apart Jordan added “We put on a show. We are black leather Rock and Roll Band through and through and we rock until we’re drenched with sweat.” Mikel pointed out “Back in the day, people would flock the GODZ shows. We’re experiencing the same reaction.” To which Eric added “The fans and followers of the GODZ Tribe will Love Mari Jayn. The GODZ and Mari Jayn are Rock and Roll Nomads, we can play everywhere and people completely get it.” From what I have witnessed, I think they are correct. With Eric Moore’s Wisdom, and their sound engineer and Studio Producer of many years, local legend John Kramer turning the dials, as long as these boys keep rocking it old skool the way that they do, I imagine you readers will soon see firsthand what I’m talking about at a venue near you. For booking info call (614) 496-6076 or email EZrock@ Live.com. So as we progress into these awesome summer months, remember to keep the music alive and enjoy and support as many local, regional and national acts as you can. These Brothers and Sisters bust their butts so that you and I can enjoy our parties and festivals. I hope to see some great bands at Wetzel again this year. If you’ve never gone I’d suggest you pencil it in for late July. It’s a great weekend, and a great party up there near Van Wert Ohio. Check them out at www. WetzelMC.com. Their lineup this year includes The Gunz, Will Freed Band, Scarlet Haze, Black Stone Cherry & Saving Able! As always, thanks for Reading! Tabasco Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

According to Gallup’s annual crime poll, Americans’ support for stricter gun-control laws has gradually declined over the last two decades. Sales of firearms have skyrocketed in the past four years. And the birth of freedomminded grassroots political groups serves as even further evidence of support for the U.S. Constitution, which includes the individual right to bear arms. But while a growing majority of people feel strongly about the need to protect our Second Amendment rights, many aren’t at all familiar with firearms, or with the details of the ongoing threat our rights. It is our continuing goal to help educate readers on some of the topics that freedomloving Americans in the 21st century need to know.
Buckeye Firearms Association
Defending Your Firearm Rights MISSION - Buckeye Firearms Association is a grassroots political action committee (PAC) dedicated to defending and advancing the right of Ohio citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. We work to elect pro-gun candidates and lobby for pro-gun legislation. For more information - Visit us online

Firearms – Safety & Education “I’m unfamiliar with guns. I want to change that. Where should I go?” National Rifle Association (NRA) -certified instructors offer a variety of classes focused on the safe handling, operation and storage of firearms and ammunition. A great beginning class is NRA FIRST Steps. Offered for pistol, rifle or shotgun, these
three hour courses provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific firearm type for four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular firearm model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the firearm; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students also receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/ NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate. To find a course near you, go to www.NRAInstructors.org and click on “Find a Course.”
For a more comprehensive course, the Ohio Concealed Handgun course mandated by state law is designed to offer a beginner all of the basics of safe handling of a handgun, and also provides a solid primer on the laws for transporting a firearm, self-defense laws, etc. Not everyone who takes a concealed handgun course starts out planning to carry a handgun with them daily, or even at all. They simply recognize the class is a great way to gain a good deal of knowledge in a relatively short amount of time. To find an Ohio concealed handgun license course, go to www. BuckeyeFirearms.org, select “CCW” in the menu bar at the top, and click on “Find a CCW Instructor.” “I’m considering purchasing a firearm. What should I buy?” The reason so many different firearms are manufactured is because there are so many different applications for them to be used. A firearm that is purchased to use for hunting can vary greatly from one intended for use as a home-defense weapon. Likewise, the type of firearm you choose for your home-defense needs should very necessarily vary depend on two main concerns. First, any firearm you purchase must be one that you can safely operate effectively. A firearm is not going to be useful to you if you are unable to operate it correctly and effectively. To find out what you are comfortable with, classes such as NRA FIRST Steps CONTINUED...

as we take steps to protect little fingers from electrical outlets, or little mouths from household chemicals, it is important to take steps to ensure that firearms are stored in a manner that prevents access to anyone but those with permission. There are a variety of reasonably-priced (less than $100) locking containers with electronic keypads that allow rapid access to those who know the combination, but which prevent access to anyone else.
(mentioned above) can be a big help. Many firearm retailers also offer guns for rent, which can give you an opportunity to try something on, so to speak, before you buy it. (A side note regarding firearm retailers: if a salesperson makes you feel uncomfortable, pressured, silly, or the like, LEAVE! There are great salespeople out there who do what they do because they believe in it, and because they legitimately enjoy teaching people and helping them get the right firearm to fit their needs, as opposed to which one they can make the most on. Keep shopping until you find such a person.) In the case of home-defense, another concern to bear in mind should be the physical characteristics of your home. A person who lives alone in a house in the country has different set of circumstances (and potential threats) to consider than a person who lives with five other people in a multi-level urban apartment complex. While a rifle or shotgun may work well in a rural environment where threats may as easily have four legs as two, a person living in closer quarters with other family members might find a handgun to be more practical. Even after you’ve chosen the right firearm, the choice of ammunition for your firearm can also vary depending on its intended use. An NRA-certified firearms instructor or competent firearms retailer (again, someone who cares about helping you more than s/he cares about making a sale) can help you make an informed choice. “Why should I consider including a firearm as part of my home/ family protection plans?” The choice to include a firearm as a part of your home protection strategy is, at its core, no different than the choice to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, wearing your seat belt when driving, or buying life insurance. We aren’t planning on having a grease fire, we aren’t planning on being involved in a collision, and we hope not to contract a terminal illness. But because we know they can happen, we prepare. The same can be said for carjackings, sexual assaults, home invasions, etc. We don’t want ourselves or a loved one to become the victim of an act of violence, but because we know it can happen, we prepare. We either prepare to do nothing, or we prepare to defend ourselves and our loved ones. “I have children in my home. What can I do to prevent an accident?” An important responsibility that comes with firearms owners is to take steps to prevent unauthorized access to your firearm. Just 110
In addition to practicing safe storage, it is equally important to educate children on what to do if they find a gun. Whether or not you are a gun owner, and while you as a parent may take the appropriate steps to guarantee your children can’t gain access to firearms in your home, you have no such ability to control the actions of others, such as the adults at the homes of your kids’ friends. As such, it is extremely important to teach your children what they should do if they find a gun. The NRA’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is a highly effective program designed for children Pre-K – 3rd grade. The award-winning program teaches young people who find a gun to “Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area, Tell an Adult.” Program materials are available from the NRA’s website - http://www.nrahq.org/safety/eddie/. It is also wise to introduce youngsters to the shooting sports when you decide that they are of an appropriate age. What age is appropriate can vary by the maturity of the child, but, for example, both of my boys were shooting BB guns at age 5 and small caliber firearms by age 7. A child who knows that an adult is happy to help them serve their curiosity by allowing them to handle an unloaded firearm in a safe setting, and to teach them to shoot, is much less likely to be tempted to attempt to handle a firearm when they are unsupervised. Second Amendment Issues Beyond the practical, there is also the political. George Washington once said that “Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty’s teeth.” Becoming a gun owner, and becoming familiar with the ongoing fight to preserve and restore our Second Amendment rights, is an important way to ensure that our descendants have the same protections afforded by the right to bear arms that we enjoy. Patrick Henry once advised that we should “Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.... The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.” To help guard the public liberty, you need to be informed. Buckeye Firearms Association sends a free e-news letter to tens of thousands of readers each week. As a subscriber, you can stay informed about what your elected representatives are doing and saying about your gun rights, receive urgent alerts about pending firearm legislation, read what anti-gun activists and the media are saying in order to strip you of your Constitutionally protected rights, and be among the first to hear about fundraisers and special events around Ohio that support the pro-gun cause. To subscribe, go to www.buckeyefirearms.org and click on “Subscribe.” Chad D. Baus is the Vice Chairman of Buckeye Firearms Association (www.buckeyefirearms.org), and an NRAcertified firearms instructor. He and his wife are the parents of two boys, aged 12 and 10.

his article will give you enough basic information so you can start smoking cigars right away and not make any “newbie” mistakes. I’ll cover the essentials on how to choose the right cigar, prepare it and smoke it for maximum enjoyment.
If this is the first time you are smoking a cigar, I recommend going to a specialty cigar retailer like Medina Cigar and Tobacco so you can see, touch and feel the cigar before you buy it. There are hundreds of different cigar brands, and different cigar lines within those brands. There are different cigars within the product lines. How do you make the right selection from the thousands of cigars that are available? Let’s consider the aspects of name brand, body or flavor, and construction. Name Brand Cigars are an organic, handmade product, just like wine. Tobacco, just like grapes is susceptible to and influenced by soil, climate and weather. Premium cigars are hand-made, which adds another variable into the mix. All of these variables make it challenging to maintain consistency. The successful name brand cigars that have been around for years owe part of their success to maintaining consistency in the quality and flavor of their cigars. This is why it is important for you to choose one of the major name brand cigars to make sure you have a good first experience. You can take risks later. Body or Flavor “Body” refers to the taste, and how strong it is. For example, a light-bodied cigar could be compared to drinking tea with cream and sugar. A medium-bodied cigar could be compared to coffee with cream and sugar. A full-bodied cigar would be like black espresso. Keep in mind that these comparisons are to give you a rough idea. Even if you like to drink black espresso, I still recommend that beginners start with a light-bodied cigar. Construction Since we are looking at well-known name brands, the construction should be good. However, this is a hand-made product and people are not perfect. A cigar roller might have a bad day. When choosing your cigar, hold it in your hand and lightly, carefully squeeze it in different areas to make sure there are no soft spots. A soft spot means it’s not rolled correctly and it will not burn properly.
tobacconist to clip the cigar for you and watch how he does it. When you clip the cap, instead of thinking like you are cutting it off, think that you are “opening” the cigar. You should not cut the entire cap off or the cigar will unravel. You just need to open a little air hole. The “Head” is the part you put in your mouth to draw the smoke. The “Foot” is the part you light. Use wooden matches or a butane lighter. Do not use paper matches or a lighter that uses liquid fuel. Both of these have chemicals that will contaminate the flavor of the cigar. For a better burn and flavor, you first “toast” the foot. I hold the cigar vertical, and hold the flame just far enough away so it does not touch the foot of the cigar. I rotate the cigar and swirl the flame. The heat will start to make the foot have glowing embers. When you have glowing embers and smoke coming off the cigar, remove the flame and gently blow out through the cigar. Then puff the cigar and put the flame back to it to finish lighting. Important: You do not inhale the smoke into your lungs like a cigarette. You pull it into your mouth to taste it and then blow the smoke out of your mouth. Now that you have the basics about types of cigars and how to properly light them get out there and try a few different brands and styles and enjoy the world of cigars. – by polska
Now, lets cover the basic anatomy of a cigar. As you can see from the graphic below, a cigar has four different parts, plus the band. I talked about the band and when to remove it in my article on Cigar Etiquette. Let’s start at the top The “Cap” is the small piece of tobacco that closes off one end of the cigar. It makes the cigar look better, prevents the wrapper from unraveling, and gives the cigar a better feel in your mouth. The first step in preparing your cigar to smoke is to “open” the cap. You will need a cigar cutter or a punch. I recommend buying a cutter as a punch won’t work with pointed caps found on some cigars. Heavy metal music report
Hello once again! This month I have for you one of the best modern day heavy melodic metal bands out there. Sweden’s InFlames! As I have mentioned in the past you are VERY unlikely to hear these guys listening to your local “Rock” station since no one plays real rock/ metal music variety anymore on most stations. I’ll save you my tirade this month on the squewd, force fed, money hungry media giants here in America manipulating people’s listening pallets. (I know, I know.. but I could go on and on about this) Best bet is support your local college radio station, and some of the DJ’s that can cater to our interest!
In-flames started itself around the beginning of the 90’s with all members emanating from the area near Gothenburg, Sweden. Their musical direction hasn’t deviated much from their early “Gothenburg sound” they all were apart of culminating. Their first produced album “Lunar Strain” (self produced 1993) was the start of the bands streamlining itself and has become more melodically, and heavy guitar riff driven. The band now has 10 studio albums to its portfolio, and even with this latest release “Sounds of a Playground Fading” still offers up every element that one has come to expect from the band and style of melodic death metal. I have to tell you right away that this is the now THIRD TIME I have seen InFlames in the last 12 months! My first show was in February of last year at the House of Blues Cleveland, Ohio. From their incredible
While you may not know much about the metal scene across the pond, Metal in the foreign market is booming! It has a multitude of great musicians and bands offering a wide range of flavors in the hard rock and metal category. InFlames is one of the greats in my opinion, they encompass many features about their music. While offering the dark happiness we all look for in the music they truly merge different elements together: growling death metal vocals, heavy low tuned guitar chops, with some seamless blending of melody & harmony, always with respectable ferocious tempos.

crowd interaction, to the dead on tightness of the band, sound quality and light show, it is one of my favorite concerts to go to. Every other show I have seen since 2012 has been compared to that first live show, and this time they didn’t disappoint me again. Playing a 17 song set didn’t seem near long enough for me, covering an excellent mix of material from many albums. They ended the show with what I heard everyone chanting all night long between songs, “Take This Life” from album “Come Clarity”. Once again an electrifying, brutal show that I will be back for again! Towards the end of the third song Anders the bands singer, reached down to me and nabbed my camera, taking a few pictures of the audience. Not too often I let my camera go to anyone you understand, but he got this great shot of myself enjoying the show with everyone else in this tiny venue located in Reno, Nevada. Thanks Anders!

A German man walks up to the immigration desk at Warsaw airport. The immigration officer asks: ‘Occupation?’ The German replies: ‘No, just a holiday.’ A hip young man goes out and buys the best car available: a brand-new Ferrari 550. It is also the most expensive car in the world, and it costs him $500,000. He takes it out for a spin and stops for a red light. An old man (about 75 years old) on a moped pulls up next to him. The old man looks over at the sleek, shiny new car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?” The young man replies, “A Ferrari 550. It cost half a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!” states the young dude proudly. The old man asks, “Mind if I take a look inside?” “No problem,” replies the owner. So the old guy pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his moped, he says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right... but I’ll stick with my moped!” Just then the light changes, so the young guy decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 160 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rearview mirror.

It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be, and suddenly, WHHHOOOOSSSHHH! something whips by him, going much faster. What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?! the young man asks himself. He floors the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it’s the old man on the moped. Amazed that the moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it some more gas and passes the moped at 275 mph. WHHOOOOSSSHH! He’s feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him again. Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 320 mph. Not 10 seconds later he sees the moped bearing down on him again. The Ferrari is flat out and there’s nothing he can do. Suddenly the moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear. The young man jumps out; unbelievably, the old man is still alive!!! He runs up to the mangled old man and says, “Oh, my God! Is there anything I can do for you?” The old man whispers softly, “Unhook... my... suspenders... from... your... side-view... mirror.”
